Zombieland, which will almost certainly fill the last slot of my alphabetically organized DVD shelf, delivers laughs with more pinpoint accuracy than nearly any comedy this year. It’s not particularly deep, and it’s not particularly outlandish, but it is satisfying as can be, with a funny premise, terrific banter, convincing gore, and a swinging attitude that keeps things breezy even as the outlook for the main characters appears grim. It also boasts the funniest cameo appearance of the year by a country mile.

Unlike most zombie film protagonists, Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg) is a massive neurotic who has managed to survive the post-apocalyptic zombie-infested America by strictly following his list of rules. Rule #1: Cardio– if you’re going to be able to outrun zombies, you have to be in shape. Ruke #2: Double Tap– don’t just shoot a zombie once and believe it’s dead… your saved ammo won’t help when that sucker pops back up and gnaws at your leg. Rule #4: Beware of Bathrooms– see, zombies are smart in this future, and they know that humans will have to vulnerably stand at a urinal or sit in a stall at some point, so they wait for food there. As our narrator, Columbus continually shares bon mots from his survival list as the film progresses.

Eventually, he meets Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson), a badass in an SUV with the number 3 painted on the side who has a craving for Twinkies. They also meet Wichita (Emma Stone) and Little Rock (Abigail Breslin)– they all agree to not use real names, instead choosing their destinations as their nicknames so that no true attachments are formed (Columbus’ Rule #5). Wichita and Little Rock are headed to Pacific Playland, a theme park where they had some great moments together when they were younger, and they hold out hope that it’s zombie-free, a place where innocence survives. I’m sure I won’t surprise you when I say the trip is more difficult than they imagine, and the park itself is the location of a giant showdown with an army of zombies.

This film was originally conceived by its director, Ruben Fleischer, as the pilot episode for a TV series. If there is a God in heaven, and he considers (as I do) zombie films one of his greatest creations, he will let HBO pick this up for at bare minimum a six-episode miniseries. The visuals are gorgeous, as Fleischer has turned highways and cities into believable wastelands. The action is fast-paced and witty– Harrelson making noise to alert the zombies of his presence, effectively beckoning them into battle, is a particularly welcome touch to the genre. The film might lack some of the dramatic oomph that several other zomcoms have, but its breezy delivery is part of its charm. Eisenberg doesn’t push the neuroses– he’s also an athletic enough hero that despite his Michael Cera-esque mannerisms, I buy him as someone who can outrun zombies and beat some down if push came to shove. Woody Harrelson is simply priceless in roles like these; when he can let his ham flag fly, he’s one of their best there is that does it (between this and 2012, Thanksgiving came early for Woody fans). Finally, Emma Stone shows that she has effectively captured all roles for the foreseeable future for the smart teenager with girl-next-door good looks. She has this way about her that makes her seem like she’s hiding something, so when she starts emoting, it always seems like a special private moment… that’s not really something an acting coach can teach you, you either have it or you don’t. She has it. And as for the cameo… skip the final paragraph if you don’t want it spoiled.

Are you ready?

Want to see the spoiler?

Here goes…

Bill Murray absolutely delivers the funniest scene so far this year, rivaling the end credits in The Hangover for hardest sustained laughter over the course of several minutes. The gang finds a Hollywood map, and decides to sleep in style, finding Bill Murray’s mansion. His walls are covered with portraits of himself, from Renaissance-style to Andy Warhol homages. Of course, Murray appears as a zombie… but when Wichita whacks him with a golf club, he screams. He reveals that he had a makeup artist turn him into a zombie, and he’s been living his regular life, unbothered by other zombies, since they don’t eat their own kind. “I just shot 18 at Riverdale,” he utters, in that style that is so distinctive that it borders on national treasure. Funny without trying too hard, gory without being excessively so, Zombieland strikes the happiest of mediums, never delving into drama or politics or satire, instead content being exactly what it is. I was equally content.

Bref, j’aime, j’aime, j’aime !!!!!

Une devinette, quand there’s something wrong in the neigbourhood, who you gonna call ?

Well these aren’t it. These are just ten of the thirty two “Rules to Surviving Zombieland”.

“Zombieland” is set in present day America during the aftermath of a huge zombie outbreak. The remaining survivors the movie follows is Woody Harrelson as “Tallahassee”, Jesse Eisenberg “aka fake Michael Cera” as “Columbus”, Emma Stone as “Wichita”, and Abigail Breslin as “Little Rock”. In a semi post apocalyptic world, everyone seems most afraid of getting attached to one another. They use the names of the places they’re headed instead of their real ones. At first I was skeptical of this movie but the minute the opening credits started rolling to “For Whom the Bell Tolls” by Metallica I was hopeful.

Amidst the semi paranoid “rules” Columbus lives by, Tallahassee’s bi polar antics, and Wichita and Little Rock’s distrustful behavior, they all come together with a shared goal: Surviving, making it to California, and getting Tallahassee a “God Damn Twinkie”. Between destroying zombies, listening to Tallahassee complain about Twinkies or say “time to nut up or shut up”, and a cameo by Bill Murray, “Zombieland” proved me wrong and has been one of the better movies I’ve seen this year.

Random note: I realized half way through that I was wearing the same acid washed v neck shirt as Tallahassee. I’m not sure how I feel about that. Too bad I didn’t have some sweet cowboy boots or a cobra skin jacket to match.

Movie Review – Zombieland
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Bill_Bonfanti]Bill Bonfanti

ZOMBIELAND – REVIEW

10 out of 10

What can I say? Zombieland is the perfect zombie movie. A potent mix of horror, gore, action, comedy and buddy movies, the film works on all levels and is seriously the most fun you can possibly have at the movies. It made me jump, made me laugh and also made me genuinely care about the characters. The film is a visually arresting, highly stylized treat that entertains all the way through and will leave you wanting more. The premise of the film is relatively simple. The world has been overrun by zombies and the few survivors of the human race are constantly on the move trying to find someplace safe to lay their heads at night. The movie starts out brilliantly with Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg) telling us about his rules for survival in post-apocalyptic zombie filled America.

The opening credits ensue and we are shown various scenes of people running from zombies in the slow motion technique popularized by Watchmen. From there we are introduced to Columbus who explains what has happened to the world and why he has managed to survive so long. Being an introvert by nature, Columbus has managed to stay alive by sticking to his self created rules such as cardio good, avoid bathrooms and the double tap (always shoot twice). More rules are introduced as the film plays and the gag never grows old. Columbus decides to head towards Ohio in hopes that he will find his parents alive and well. On the way he hooks up with Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson), the most bad ass zombie killer you can imagine. Just to clarify, the characters call each other by their destinations, not by their actual names. Tallahassee explains that it’s easier not to grow attached to each other that way.

The pair are complete opposites which allows for some great buddy movie comedy and from here on in Zombieland plays like a road trip comedy on acid. Attacked by zombies at every turn, the two soon meet up with two sisters (Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin) who have managed to survive and after a few false starts; the foursome begins to trust and like one another.

Woody Harrelson as tough guy zombie slayer Tallahassee is ideally cast and it is the best role of his career. Harrelson is hilarious in the film, displaying his impeccable comic timing while also showcasing his tough guy swagger. Watching him kill zombies is as pleasurable for the audience as it is for the character. Harrelson shares great chemistry with Jesse Eisenberg as Columbus, in effect portraying the Odd Couple as zombie killers. Eisenberg is solid, perfecting the nerdy, wimpy guy and he reminds me more than a little bit of king of the dweebs, Michael Cera. In fact Cera must be kicking himself for turning down this role (I’m assuming he was offered it). Emma Stone as tough older sister, Wichita, is quite good and I believe she has a bright future on the silver screen. Abigail Breslin as her little sister, Little Rock, is one tough little cookie and proves that she is much more than Little Miss Sunshine. There is also a side-splitting cameo from… I don’t want to ruin it… let’s just say it is a brilliant cameo from a comedy god.

First time director, Ruben Fleischer, does a great job of moving the film along at a breakneck pace while also mining the comedy gold out of every situation the characters find themselves in. He has a wonderful visual style that borrows heavily from Zack Snyder (Dawn of the Dead remake, Watchmen) and he is certainly a director to watch in the future. It’s not an easy thing to make something fresh out of a zombie flick, but Fleischer takes the genre (sub-genre?) to a whole new level.

To sum it up, Zombieland is a splatteristic, gory, jump out of your seat horror film that also happens to be one of the funniest films of the year. Anchored by terrific performances, Zombieland is a must see horror/comedy delight. Better than Shaun of the Dead or Zack Snyder’s Dawn of the Dead remake, Zombieland is the definitive zombie movie.

“Zombieland” é a prova cabal disso.

For Whom The Bell Tolls” do Metallica.

While we’re on the subject of sexy, funny boys, how could I not take just a moment to talk about the lovely Ryan Reynolds. I have thought he was great ever since “Two Girls & a Girl (and a Pizza Place)” and he has always been hilarious in every role.

For a lesser known, underrated, but fabulous Ryan Reynolds movie, be sure to check out “Definitely, Maybe”. Also starring Rachel Weisz, Isla Fisher, Elizabeth Banks and Abigail Breslin. What more could you want??

Killing zombies has never looked so much fun! Zombieland stars Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emm

Killing zombies has never looked so much fun!

Zombieland stars Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, and Abigail Breslin as survivors of a zombie apocalypse. Together they take an extended road trip in an attempt to find a sanctuary free from zombies, following a set of “rules” designed to keep them alive where others have failed, all the while trying to “enjoy the little things”, killing zombies in a variety of creative ways.

When I first started following this film back in February I was interested a little bit because I love zombie films and I love comedies so you know when those two mash together I’m just gonna go crazy. Then I saw the trailer and thought,”well I guess we’re looking at the American Shaun Of The Dead”. However, now that I look at it, if people are choosing whether to see this or Shaun Of The Dead, I say this one.

Zombieland has some amazingly nice touches on its comedy in this film. It has a lot of comedy that you won’t get when its said, but afterward you understand it and find it hilarious. The jokes were either sarcastic, ironic, or plain and simply just obvious jokes but were still very funny, much ado to Eisenberg’s hilarious narration.

The film also isn’t all about the comedy it actually does have some “heartfelt” moments. I found this to be very odd since it is a zombie comedy, but overall very effective with it’s highly witty screenplay.

Shall I not forget to mention that there is plenty of gore and violence to keep any “gore-lover” happy. The way they kill the zombies are very creative and that’s what really makes this film stand out. Not just with your car, or with a piano, or with a shotgun, but at the end there is this whole amusement park sequence where they use some to kill zombies.

The whole cast does a great job at being really funny, witty, and most of all likable. The characters are mostly 2 dimensional stereotypes, but they actually turn out to be funnier than some would expect. Eisenberg does once again at playing the same character he does in every film so not much changes here. Harrelson plays a stereotypical B-movie hard ass really well, and it seems like he’s the funniest and shows us that this was the role he was born to play (other than Natural Born Killers). But the best in the film that is definitely worth full price of admission is the secret cameo star, that once you see it you will not stop laughing.

I think my only problem with the film is that it seems very scary at the start, and then slows way down for alot of character and jokes, with barely any zombies at all, to the spectacular finale. I loved all aspects of the film, but it would of much needed to mix all these together better, to make it truly outstanding film, a shock indeed, plus the gore was alittle on the short side for me. Also, so much more could have been added to make this film even better.

Consensus: The makers of Zombieland aren’t really doing anything different for the zombie comedy genre, but make a great collection of gore, comedy, and violence with a little touch of heart to make this whole film a great and fun experience.

9/10=Full Priceee!!!

A- Who knew that mad cow disease could morph into something much worse than a few sick cows? Clearly

A-

Who knew that mad cow disease could morph into something much worse than a few sick cows?

Clearly not the American public. By the time they become cognizant to the fact that mad cow disease is a bit more serious than they imagined, three quarters of the populace has been reduced to mindless zombies, oozing black bile from their mouths and attacking anyone not a zombie in an insane desire to feast on their flesh. The only way someone can survive in this post-apocalyptic mess is to establish a few rules.

For a lone geeky college student dubbed “Columbus” (Jesse Eisenberg) after his home town, it’s more than a few rules. It’s a list of at least thirty-one different rules that he religiously adheres to in order to keep all of his body parts intact. They include things like “Cardio,” because as he points out, when the zombie disease began to spread, if you had an extra pound of flesh it was that much easier for the zombies to catch you and take it. Or another rule, like “Beware of bathrooms.” Because zombies may be mindless flesh-eaters, but they aren’t completely stupid. Where better to catch unsuspecting prey then when they are at their most vulnerable?

For other survivors, there aren’t quite as many rules, but they have rules nevertheless. For lone wolf Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson), it’s pretty much one rule. Kill every zombie you see. And he’s pretty good at it too. He finds inventive ways of killing zombies, including hedge trimmers, baseball bats, and a banjo. He makes zombie killing look easy. He’s a free spirit, pretty much the exact opposite of Columbus, but the two meet on the road and decide to team up. Tallahassee has just one weakness: Twinkies. And its this craving that leads them to a supermarket where they meet two MORE loners, sisters Wichita (Emma Stone) and Little Rock (Abigail Breslin). The sisters at first appear to be helpless and scared, but it doesn’t take long to figure out that they are scam artists using their talents to survive in a zombie infested world. Nevertheless, this rag-tag team of survivors decides to stick together all the way to the Pacific coast in the hopes that teamwork might keep them all alive.

Zombie Killer of the Week?

This is, in my opinion, one of the most entertaining movies of the year. Eisenberg’s dry wit, Harrelson’s sarcasm, and Stone’s cynicism make for the perfect combination, and when you combine that with goofy zombies of every shape, size, and color, it makes for a hilarious film. I thought the chemistry between the stars was great, and the performances were excellent, particularly Harrelson as Tallahassee. He always has a quick quip for everything that happens, and his character actually has some depth.

I also enjoyed the constant slow motion shots of zombies chasing people, usually accompanied by captions that explained Columbus’ “rules.” They were usually good for a laugh, along with providing anecdotal points that added a great deal of humor. I also enjoyed the way that backstories were provided for the characters, which really made them a lot more sympathetic and likeable. And of course, there were the myriad inventive ways in which zombies were killed: cars, sledgehammers, theme park rides, pianos, and the usual shotguns and uzi’s.

The dialogue, though, was the best part. Line after line of engaging, witty verbage that made you laugh…the best comparison I can make is that if you crossed Juno with any zombie movie Zombieland would be the result. That’s high praise, considering Juno had one of the wittiest scripts in the last five years. Harrelson, in particular, has some of the best lines, but Eisenberg’s constant narration throughout the movie has a lot of moments of dry humor contained in it, and the ripostes between he and Harrelson are fantastic.

Nut Up or Shut Up

There really wasn’t much here not to enjoy. If you are a bit on the squeamish side there are a couple of bloody, gory moments, but most of it is over the top and not realistic violence, and it’s played for laughs. I found it to be well crafted, well acted, and generally one of the better movies I’ve seen this year. If I had any major complaint, it is that I could’ve watched a bit longer.
