Je l’ai re-travaillé sur Ableton Live 7 et Reason pour en faire une version plus “punchy” et diffusable sur les dancefloors.

Well people, it has been confirmed. I will have changed my mind for the final time regarding my electronic drum set. The set which I had been saving money for many months to purchase is no longer my first choice. If you read my post from Friday you have a slight idea of what I’m rambling about.

Originally, I was saving to Purchase a Roland TD12SV V Stage Electronic Drum Set. Not a cheap unit by any means. In fact, I’ve recently seen some cars that could be purchased for the same amount of cash. The choice changed slightly when I researched the Roland TD9SX V Tour Electronic Drum Set. It is slightly lesser of a set compared to the TD12 with regard to the sound module, stand etc. However it is much less money and it would easily suit my needs. Now, I’ve changed my mind again once and for all. My decision came upon me rather abruptly and at first it didn’t make any sense until I thought about it for a bit. Then it hit me, I almost spent way more money than I needed to. The key word here is almost.

Now, There are benefits and downfalls of my decision as with any decision regarding a sizable gear purchase. One benefit is the lower cost. The drum set I have decided to purchase is the Alesis USB Pro Drum Kit With Surge Cymbals. The price is $699.00 which is still half of the price of the TD9SX kit. That is pretty substantial considering I will soon be a dad and need all the money I can spare. Another benefit is the feel. The Alesis USB kit uses real Mylar drum heads. As far as authenticity of feel goes, they are unmatched. Don’t get me wrong, I did like the mesh heads of the Roland but the Mylar feels more like a real drum set. The downfalls are that there is no sound module. Meaning, I can’t just plug some headphones into this set and rock out, I need to connect the set to my computer, load the included BFD Lite software and connect my headphones to my computer. Essentially making this set a bit less portable until I can get my laptop. Not only that, but the sound library I will be using is Session Drums and Ableton Live 7 which requires me to get another hard drive to even load up the samples. So, there you have it, my plan has changed and evolved but the result is a better feeling and sounding solution.

Currently I have a pretty meager setup. It’s perfect for what I do in my space though so I have no complaints. However, I have recently found a Korg D32XD Multi-Track Recorder. I’ve used this unit in the past and it is awesome for me considering how I would like to expand my space. Ultimately, I may convert my garage or move the studio space to either my basement or attic to allow for more gear within my space. As it stands, I don’t have space enough for a drum set so recording drums, unless absolutely necessary, is out of the question. Why am I rambling on about this problem on my blog site? Because I am torn between purchasing this recorder or my Roland TD9SX drum set.

There are many ways I can look at this and many solutions. One solution is to pick myself up an Alesis USB Pro Drum Kit With Surge Cymbals and upgrade my Ableton Live with Session Drums. I know what you’re thinking…I’m compromising quality for price. You may be right but I can achieve an incredible drum sound with Ableton Session Drums and a USB drum set such as this Alesis at a much lower price. No, the Alesis doesn’t have multi-zone triggers but it’s mainly for practice. I do plan to use it a bit for live podcasting of my bands performances but I can get the good drum sounds from Session Drums for that. Ok, I’m done rambling. Let me know what you think I should do. Any input is appreciated!

If you’ve been able to read my previous post regarding my home studio setup, then you know that I’m using a Mac G4 as my main computer. I have Ableton Live 7, Reason 4 and Garageband on there which I do use but I’ve discovered recently when building some tracks in Ableton, that my CPU is very substandard. I checked it out and discovered it was a 400 mhz processor and that will not do.

What I’ve done now is, re-convert my PC from Linux based operating system (I was running Ubuntu Hardy) back to XP. What was I thinking? I’ll tell you, I can’t run Ableton or Reason in Ubuntu and I need the ability to run them in order to fully meet the needs of potential clients. One project may only require recording an acoustic guitar to a click track then recording vocals and I really don’t need either of those software applications for that scenario. That is incredibly simple. On the other hand, I may have somebody that has produced some basic tracks in one of the previously mentioned software applications such as Reason and if my machine glitches out and the audio distorts when I try to play it back, they may lose confidence and take their project elsewhere. Yes, I am a little disheartened that I will be losing Garageband in the studio because it is a simple, fun and a decent sounding application, but I will still have it in my home office. If I need to use garage band, I still can.

So, over the weekend I finally installed Reason 4.0 and Ableton Live 7 and I must say I was very impressed. However, I was not very impressed with how my Mac G4 handled the software. I noticed when checking out the pre-loaded demo song that ships with Reason that my processor was maxing out and that was causing some digital distortion and glitching. It was a little frustrating. I’ll admit that I did not bother looking at the minimum system requirements of the software because I assumed that my Mac would run them without incident, I was wrong. I looked up the processor speed and found it to be only 400 MHz. That just will not do if I want to run either of these software applications to their fullest potential. I’m going to have to beef up my machine substantially in order for it to do what I want it to do.

I went to Google to find myself a G4 Processor Upgrade and found many. My quest though is not to just find an adequate processor upgrade rather to find an adequate Plug-and-Play processor upgrade. I’ve noticed that numerous manufacturers of processors have some firmware editing requirements with their processors and that sounds like a headache to me. I do have internet at my house and I’m positive I could get the necessary tweaks done in order to make my budget processor upgrade work in time but I want a simple, plug-and-play device that I just have to install then start using. Granted, it will cost a little more money and I can only attribute that to the convenience factor but I feel it is worth the money.

The processor upgrade will not be for some time so I will have to learn to use Ableton and Reason minimally for the time being. My current savings is for my electronic drum set which will likely be the Roland TD9SX V Tour Electronic Drum Set. I can’t wait until I don’t have to worry about upgrading components in my studio and I can just sit back and do everything I want to do.

Next Project; Set up my other desk in the studio so I can position my studio monitors exactly where I would like them and then acoustically treat the room for optimal sound. Currently, the room sounds terrible. There is so much sound reflection it is nearly impossible to tell which monitor a specific sound is coming from, I’ll need to fix that soon. I had previously used packing blankets for this problem but they were not absorbent in the lower frequency bandwidth so I still had issues with phasing. I’ll keep you posted.

A veces, hablando con algunos amigos, hemos comentado algunas mejoras que podrían hacerse al Ableton Live para que fuera todavía mejor programa de lo que es. Como por arte de magia, o porque Ableton es una empresa que escucha a sus usuarios, la nueva versión presenta muchas de esas mejoras “imprescindibles”.

Entre ellas están:

1. Motor de audio mejorado (64 bits, dither powr, conversión de frecuencia mejorada, etc…)
2. Nuevo modelo de compresor tipo “vintage”
3. Sidechain para el nuevo Compresor, Gate y Autofilter
4. Modos de alta calidad (sin aliasing) para Operator, Dynamic Tube y Saturator
5. EQ Eight mejorado (64 bits) y con nueva interfaz de usuario
6. Spectrum, un nuevo analizador de espectro
7. Precisión Midi mejorada con menos jitter
8. Instrumentos Midi externos con mejor integración en el programa
9. Gestión de memoria mejorada
10. Hojas de Información de audio y midi que explican el flujo de las señales audio/midi
11. Cambios de compás en la ventana Arrangement
12. Exportación de video
13. Múltiples carriles de automatización (¡por fin!)
14. Tempo Nudge, para frenar o acelerar el tempo del tema y sincronizarse a una fuente de sonido en plan DJ

17. Nuevos instrumentos virtuales: Además de Sampler y Operator (con pequeñas mejoras), ahora están disponibles Electric, Tension y Analog. Este último tiene especialmente buena pinta.
18. Nuevos instrumentos sampleados: EIC 2, Session Drums, Drum Machines, Orchestral Strings, Orchestral Brass, Orchestral Woodwinds, Orchestral Percussion.

¿Que ha quedado sin mejorar? El envío de señales pre- y post- fader sin tener que usar rodeos innecesarios, soporte nativo surround, la posibilidad de separar la ventana única en varias ventanas, la posibilidad de visualizar el contenido de varios clips de forma simultánea, reverb de convolución… y sobre todo me ha extrañado no encontrar ningún fruto de la anunciada colaboración entre Ableton y Cycling 74.

Ahora, a esperar que nos toque el turno en la beta…
