A new era! I am not the programming type, but I am really excited about Max being made available for the Ableton Live community. In my mind this is like having NI Reaktor with all its possibilities directly wired into Live’s devices. Please check out the links and you’ll find a ton of info about this great invention. Hopefully someone will make something spectacular with the Akai APC40 as well.

It’s been quite a while since my last entry, so I decided to write a new one (just after having purchased Ableton Max for Live – really excited about what this application will do for Live users – and I am also waiting for some serious Akai APC40 tweaking to go along with it).

Anyway, the status at the moment in the camp of Pjusk is simply that Andreas “Lupo” Nordenstam is currently mastering and mixing the album which will be named “Sval”. For those not that fluent in Norwegian (probably 99% of you), Google translate suggests “cool” (temperature). Feedback so far from Andreas is really promising and if everything goes as planned, the album should be out on 12k spring 2010. With the next Pjusk album on its way, I have already started working together with Bjarte on the next Circular album. Promise to be back soon. Cheers, Josten!

This past weekend’s Ableton invasion included two days of classes by Dubspot instructors and a FunkAid for Africa Benefit party. Highlights?

Being around ppl who aren’t afraid that Ableton will lead to the end of modern civilization

Hobotech and eating hog eyes

Francis Preve

DJ Obah and Akina Adderley & The Vintage Playboys at the Independent

Read more after the jump.

Austin was one of eight U.S. cities to host NYC DJ School Dubspot’s weekends of “interactive workshops, Q&As and live performances” on their Ableton Live 8 Sessions tour. An increasingly ubiquitous program, Ableton Live 8 is production and performance software used by the biggest, best producers around the world, and some of the worst too. Despite the discourse around Ableton and other DJ software that has some of the most creative and forward thinking edm producers pitching fits and sounding like grandparents wishing for the good ol’ days, the session was decently attended by at least 30 students each day.

Sunday’s Ableton Sessions featured some amazing on-the-fly live performances by Dubspot instructors and guests Pilo, Jon Margulies and Francis Preve. Margulies, a Dubspot instructor and author of Ableton Live 7 & 8, enlightened students regarding Hobo-tech during his session on Advanced Performance Applications. The genre, whose name he coined, goes against NYC’s bottle service sensibility and glorifies low living instead. Margulies even created an example, warping a hobo-esque song to a dance track. Thanks John. I’ll never get those lyrics out of my head. “I got a girl, 6 feet tall, sleeps in the kitchen with her feet in the hall, eatin hog eyes, spittin out chittlins.” Disgusting. Great class though.

Francis Preve also taught a fun class on Creative DJing Options. First of all, he’s really entertaining. His desktop background is a quote about how truly creative types are dirty, unorganized and have strange taste in women. Secondly, perhaps more importantly, he’s a great teacher. Everyone and their mom has taken or wants to take his production classes at ACC, and I can see why.

Saturday night’s CD release event and benefit for NextAid, “Funk Aid” went down at the Independent, a cool venue east of IH-35, between 5th and 6th Street. I arrived just in time for a great performance by Akina Adderley & The Vintage Playboys. DJ Obah spun a set of funk, jazz and soul next. Obah mixed the FunkAid for Africa CD being released at the event. All proceeds benefit NextAid. Check it out here.

FunkAid CD

Dian Giove, president and founder of Dubspot mentioned loving Austin’s vibe and wanting to start a Dubspot school here. Very interesting. Interested?

The Festival of New Trumpet Music (FONT Music) will present Forward Flight, the third and final even

The Festival of New Trumpet Music (FONT Music) will present Forward Flight, the third and final event of its 7th annual performance season, from Wednesday, January 13th through Saturday, January 16th at New York’s Abrons Arts Center.

This four-night celebration of the eclecticism of the trumpet in contemporary music, curated by Dave Douglas and Taylor Ho Bynum, will feature events on two stages, including performances by a diverse range of ensembles, three free FONT Music Workshop Series events and an opening night tribute to unheralded veteran trumpet player, Wilmer Wise.

The program will include world premieres of music from the New York-based composers collective Anti-Social Music (ASM) and composer David Sanford, whose piece, “Seven Kings”, was commissioned by FONT Music with support from Chamber Music America to be performed by the Meridian Arts Ensemble with guest soloist Dave Ballou. And, The New York Trumpet Ensemble, directed by Mark Gould, will present the New York premiere of Charles Wuorinen’s Brass Quintet.

Headlining events will include indie folk band The Low Anthem with a special appearance by Dave Douglas, a celebration of the Chicago Underground Duo’s new CD, Boca Negra (Thrill Jockey), a rare performance of Ornette Coleman’s “The Sacred Mind of Johnny Dolphin” by Wilmer Wise and the American debut of the Open Circuit International Trumpet Ensemble, featuring an all-star cast of trumpet players from America, Austria, Japan and France, presented with support from CMA/FACE French-American Jazz Exchange.

“Forward Flight is a collection of performances designed to highlight the forward-looking trajectory of current brass music,” Douglas explains. “The name is taken from a late fifties album by Booker Little, and like that trumpeter it shows the wide ranging possibilities for this instrument. In the context of alternative folk and rock, in contemporary classical composition, in international hybrids of improvised music and electronics, brass instruments continue to breathe air into the expansion of contemporary trends.”

He adds, “FONT Music is for the first time becoming a membership organization, and this festival feels like a part of that step. In our own community, longtime board member Wilmer Wise will be feted with a ceremony and special performance on January 13th. When combined with a series of workshops free to the public, this seems like a big step in a very special year for FONT Music as an organization and as a music festival.”

About FONT Music:

FONT Music is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that sustains trumpeters and new trumpet music by commissioning composers, producing concerts, presenting workshops and panels, and supporting music programs in New York City’s public schools. Created by trumpeters for trumpeters, the organization and its diverse programs are currently overseen by Artistic Director Dave Douglas and a volunteer board featuring some of contemporary trumpet music’s most celebrated practitioners.

Founded in 2003 by Douglas and Roy Campbell, FONT Music has presented over 200 concerts by emerging artists and creative pioneers alike at venues all over New York. It has also commissioned new works from more than a dozen young trumpet players, paid tribute to such legendary performers as Louis Armstrong, Don Cherry and Woody Shaw, and presented world premiere performances of music by a long list of notable composers that includes Anthony Braxton, Laurence “Butch” Morris and Wadada Leo Smith.

Its acclaimed efforts have been called “a grand highlight of the musical season” (The New Yorker), “one of the most exciting and diverse of NYC’s annual music festivals” (Time Out New York), “a key showcase for some of the most exciting horn players on the planet” (Chicago Reader) and “an expectedly stellar and eclectic schedule of genre-blurring commissions and exploratory collaborations” (JazzTimes). “By definition,” adds the New York Times‘ Nate Chinen, “the Festival of New Trumpet Music prizes a spirit of innovation; that ‘new’ in the title is no accident.”

Able10 celebrates 10 years of Ableton and to celebrate there’s free upgrades, special offers etc. plus some free Live Packs from artists such as Adam Freeland, Apparat, Swayzak and several others.

These Live Packs need the latest version of Ableton, which is 8.0.9.

There doesn’t seem to be that much in 8.0.9 as is shown at http://forum.ableton.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=128509
but I’ve downloaded it and its all worked nicely so far.

So my launchpad is not here yet. It seems it’s in store worldwide from 2 Nov, except Italy. Maybe Italy it’s not part of the world, or Novation is not from this world. By the way, I’m so excited about this device that I can’t stop my compulsive need to look around for it and its applications. So, here we go with my favourites!

Nonome, the Monome emulator

With all the protocol under the sun, it was just a matter of days. And infact Peter at Create Digital Music informs us that Piclae made ( and it’s currently updating quite often ) a cool Monome emulator for the Launchpad. It seems most apps run smootly ( the major problem seems to be 7up ), and you can choose your favourite colour too! And if you’re guessing it, yes, you can keep your Ableton modes while using it!

via Create Digital Music

Download Nonome application and updates’ log, monome.org forum

Below a video of Piclae showing us a Launchpad running Flin, and Sunup, a song performed in mlr by Thomas Piper

OSC Wrapper, programming made easy

This is my favourite one! It’s a simple app by Will Crossland which translates the MIDI communication with the Launchpad into OSC. So, the 12 pages of the protocol are reduced to 2 simple messages, /press and /led! The program lets you use 8 different “layers” to address 8 applications for each Launchpad. And yes, yes… you keep your out-of-the-box Ableton modes too! The application is made in Max/MSP, but only for the communication’s buses. All the code is placed inside a Javascript file, which everyone can modify to his needs. Cool stuff, cool stuff.

via Create Digital Music

Free download Wac.Launchpad handler

The nice part is that Will decided to use the approach of monome’s protocol due to its logical simplicity:

“The Monome OSC protocol is clearly well thought and well suited to addressing a 2D grid so why reinvent the wheel?”

I can’t agree more. And it would be cool to have a unified protocol for every grid controller! It seems like Monome’s users don’t like the Launchpad too much, but I think that both devices ( and think of Livid Instruments’ Block and Ohm64, too ) are simply different forms of the same concept. Monome’s succesful work is about faith in a concept that big names rejected at first. I personally don’t think a grid of back-lit buttons is any kind of invenction you can patent, and that talking about “stolen ideas” is inappropriate in this context. Concepts belong to people who are using that stuff, the wonderful community behind Monome for example. Now the family is extended, and I’ll be happy to see a common language, and people sharing their work, in the name of a common evolution. Will’s choice seems a good start in this direction!

Custom Max controller and Max4Live porting of Monome’s apps is ispiring

Surfin’ around YouTube brought me to this Max/MSP application which makes the Launchpad a custom controller! I can’t understand exactly the features, I don’t understand the language, but it seems he made pages of presets’ grids mixed with slider controllers, which makes sense in many ways, like if your using it with your favourite synthesizer or for some kind of experimental generative application!

And you know, Max4Live public beta is started and people are having fun! So check out these Max4Live ports of Polygome and StepFilter by Stretta! It will not be difficult to adapt these to the Launchpad, expecially now that we have our OSC wrapper!

via max for live blog by nick rothwell

and

So, what can I say… Maybe it’s better I come back to my wavelet’s book, waiting for the time I can press some buttons!

long time no hear no see. Hope you are well . I am still working a lot with the new Ableton 8 diving a bit deeper into its features day by day. Today I started to work on some very old ideas which have rot on my desk several months, some even several years already. It’s not my intention to build ready-to-go tracks but more track-like soundscapes which one (maybe you and I) could work on and perform later. This one is called “From Now On I Am A Rock”. Have fun and take care!

Headed to NYC for the weekend, so I’ll be out of touch. Just know that thinks are CRUISING over here. Shows offers, album progress (The Console War and solo), starting of a new project, finally getting to start on my aforementioned blog project… it’s great! I might take the NYC opportunity to grab some new visuals… it’s so great for people watching.

The Max4Live beta test is out. For those of you that don’t know, Ableton Live is my sequencer of choice (although primary DAW duties still usually fall to Adobe Audition), and Max is basically a programming environment that lets you mess with, expand and improve Ableton in basically any way you see fit. As the beta is short, and the program is $299, I’ll probably be spending my next few day playing with it to see if I want to save up for it. My goal is to get it to work really well with Resolume via OSC. We’ll see! After seeing Max, I’m a little overwhelmed, and have spent more time figuring out ways around it to do what I’d envisioned instead of actually using it! Haha.

More updates on all of these projects soon, I promise. They’re just keeping me so busy! Soon I should have all kinds of things to put out.

One last note—I found an EXCELLENT VST pack the other morning, especially for people interested in electronic and hip-hop production (what could that have to do with my latest project? Hmm.) Check out the tape saturator and time stretcher here.

As you are probably aware, wer are big fans of Soundcloud and use it frequently for our competitions

As you are probably aware, wer are big fans of Soundcloud and use it frequently for our competitions and to host our sample pack demos. Good news is that they are coming to the Iphone. SoundCloud is due to launch its official iPhone app Nov.17th, letting users access tracks sent to their account from their device as well as their desktop. It’s aimed at artists, producers, A&R folk and label managers.

The app also allows people to send tracks via email from their iPhone – its App Store blurb suggests this is likely to be done “while meeting potential clients or partners right on the spot”. Naturally, the app requires an existing SoundCloud account to work. It’s will be available in the app store for $0.99. What better way to keep up with our demos on your way!

On another topic, as you know I’ve recently discussed the new Abletoncourses.com discount available from Loopmasters (just use the code LM20). In that vein, I thought it might be useful to include a useful Ableton Twitter list worth following. The great thing about these lists is that you can just click to follow the list and you are able to get tweets from a wide range of useful Ableton-related sources.

Technology marches on.
For the Able10 anniversary, I made a Live Pack that expands on some of the kits, grooves and Live Racks in my scrapyard of sounds. I built the song ‘Metropolis’ around the sounds and called in Atarah Valentine to lay down the vocals. The Live Pack is filled with very expressive kits that you can download for free here: http://www.ableton.com/able10-artist-packs
