I Was Surfing the forums today, and I found a post with an interesting line.

What is RSS? Personally, I don’t care anymore. I just want it OFF my site. It looks bad for me to have things on my site that don’t work, that I don’t understand and probably wouldn’t use anyway.

After I read it, I was like, woah – slow down buddy! So let’s have a talk about RSS. It stands for “Really Simple Syndication”, if you didn’t know.

First of all, if you really want to know if it should be on your site or not, try doing some sort of a poll in your posts – see what your readers think! Some people will always know what RSS is, but never use it. Some people live off it, it’s your choice. Myself, I’m not a big fan of RSS – yet it somehow works it’s self into all of my sites. (like this one, just check the sidebar). That’s because I know other people use it – and it makes reading my blog easier for them. If you want someone’s feed, most blogs have a link to it, sometimes with the famous orange icon.

When you have RSS, you have a Feed. For example, mine would be: wpadvanced.wordpress.com/feed/rss/. That page gives you a summary of all my latest posts. You can do the same thing with comments. It gives you info like my blog name, and the title of each post is linked. Now, you can subscribe to my feed. Up near the top of the page, on any feed, will be a yellow bar.

That bar gives you the option of subscribing to a blog using a reader, some popular ones are Google, and My Yahoo (I’ll explain more on these another day). It’ll make reading your blog a lot easier for your visitors – and if you include a link to it then it’s your choice. But at least you know what it is now!

શરૂઆત કરીએ એકડે એક થી. RSS એટલે શું? આ એક ટૂંકાક્ષરી શબ્દ છે જેનું પૂર્ણ રૂપ છે  Really Simple Syndication. ઘણા લોકો એને Rich Site Summary કે Really Simple Subscribing પણ કહે છે… 

સામન્ય ભાષા માં કહેવુ હોય તો “કોઈ પણ વેબસાઈટ કે બ્લોગ પર વિઝિટ કર્યા વગર તેના પર ક્યારે નવી પોસ્ટ કે માહીતી આવી તે જાણવા માટે આ એક અત્યંત ઊપયોગી સાધન છે“

તમે કહેશો કે વિઝિટ કર્યા વગર ? હા…..એજ તો આ સુવિધાની મૂળ ખાસીયત છે…એક ઉદાહરણ જોઈએ

ફેવરીટસ ફોલ્ડર માં ( Internet Explorer ) કે બુકમાર્ક કરવામાં ( firefox ) તમે યાદ રાખ્યા વગર વેબસાઈટ એડ્રેસ જરુરત પ્રમાણે વાપરી શકો છો. તમે અનેક વેબસાઈટ ના નામ ત્યાં મૂકી શકો.

પણ કોઈ વેબસાઈટ અપડેટ થઈ કે કેમ તે તો તમે ત્યારે જ જાણી શકો જો એ વેબસાઈટ તમને ઈ મેઈલ નોટીફીકેશન થી જણાવે કે તમે ત્યાં વિઝિટ કરીને જાતે શોધો…

અધ્યારૂ નું જગત રોજ અપડેટ થાય છે અને રોજ મૂકાતી પોસ્ટ એડ્રેસ પર પહોંચતા જ દેખાય છે. ઘણી વેબસાઈટસ કે બ્લોગ જો રોજ કે ચોક્કસ સમયાંતરે અપડેટ ના થતા હોય તો તમે તે વેબસાઈટ પર અપડેશન થયેલી પોસ્ટસ શોધવામાં સમય વેડફશો…
હવે જો તમને ફોટોગ્રાફી નો અદમ્ય શોખ હોય અને તમે ચોક્કસ સમયે તે વેબસાઈટ ખંખોળી શકો તો અલગ વાત છે પણ ધારો કે ફોટોગ્રાફી સાથે તમને ગુજરાતી સાહિત્ય, હોલીવુડ ની નવી મૂવીઝ, સમાચારો, કે ક્રિકેટ ની દુનિયા ની હલચલ, આ બધા માં રસ હોય તો તમે રોજ કેટલી વેબસાઈટ વિઝિટ કરશો?

ઘણી વેબસાઈટ તમે ઈ-મેઈલ એડ્રેસ આપો તો નવી પોસ્ટસ વિષે તમને માહિતિ પહોંચાડે છે…પણ અહીં તમારે તમારૂ ઈ મેઈલ એડ્રેસ ખુલ્લુ કરી રહ્યા છો…જેનો ઊપયોગ થવાને બદલે દુરૂપયોગ પણ થઈ શકે છે….સ્પામ આમ પણ એક માથાનો દુખાવો છે….તો પછી આ રીતે તમે સ્પામને વધારો આપવા પણ નહીં માંગો…

ઈન્ટરનેટ નો વપરાશ કરતા રોજીંદા લોકોને તેમના રસ ના વિષયો અને નવી પ્રગતિ વિષે કોઈ પણ વધારે માથાકુટ વગર સૂચના આપતી પધ્ધતિ એટલે RSS

જ્યારે કોઈ વેબસાઈટ કે બ્લોગ તેની કન્ટેન્ટ / આર્ટીકલ કે ન્યૂઝ આઈટમ ઉમેરે છે ત્યારે તે તેની સાથે એક એવુ ડોક્યુમેન્ટ પણ પબ્લીશ કરે છે જે તે વેબસાઈટ પર અપડેટ થયેલ પોસ્ટ કે આર્ટીકલ ને સંક્ષેપમાં વર્ણવે છે. આ ડોક્યુમેન્ટ XML ફોર્મેટ માં હોય છે ( XML એ HTML ની જેમ જ વેબની એક ભાષા છે) જે કેટલાક ખાસ સોફ્ટવેર ની મદદથી વાંચી શકાય છે. આવા ખાસ સોફ્ટવેર ને કહે છે  રીડર (RSS Reader) જે Feed ને અંતિમ વપરાશકાર માટે વાંચી શકાય તેવા ફોર્મેટ માં આપે છે. આ ડોક્યુમેન્ટ માં લખેલ સંક્ષેપ ને (feed) ફીડ કહે છે. આ ડોક્યુમેન્ટ ને .xml એક્સ્ટેન્શન હોય છે.

તો હવે જ્યારે તમારે કોઈ પણ વેબસાઈટ કે બ્લોગ ના અપડેશન વિષે માહિતિ જોઈતી હોય તો તેની RSS Feed સબસ્ક્રાઈબ કરો…આ Feed સબસ્ક્રાઈબ કરવુ એ કોપી અને પેસ્ટ કરવા જેટલું જ સરંળ છે બસ તમારી મનપસંદ વેબસાઈટ નું RSS Feed એડ્રેસ તમારા RSS Reader માં પેસ્ટ કરો…હવે તમારી જોઈતી વેબસાઈટ અપડેટ થઈ છે કે નહીં તે જોવા ફક્ત તમારા રીડર માં જાઓ, જો કાંઈ અપડેટ હશે તો તે ત્યાં તરત જ સૂચિત કરશે….સરળ અને સીધું !!

તો આ રીતે તમે વેબસાઈટ કે બ્લોગ વિઝિટ કર્યા વગર જાણી શકો કે તે ખરેખર અપડેટ થયા કે નહીં, અને પછી પણ જો ઊપયોગી માહિતિ લાગે તો રીડર માં થી જ તે એડ્રેસ પર જઈ શકો.

ઉપર જણાવેલી બીજી બે રીત (ફેવરીટ ફોલ્ડર માં એડ કરીને કે ન્યૂઝલેટર સબસ્ર્કાઈબ કરીને) કરતા આર એસ એસ ફીડ સીધું અને સરળ છે. અહીં તમારે કાંઈ પણ યાદ રાખવાની જરૂર નથી કે કોઈ ફાઈલ સેવ કરવાની જરૂર નથી, સબસ્ર્કાઈબ કરો અને રેગ્યુલર અપડેટ મેળવો. અહીં તમે કોઈને તમારૂ ઈ મેઈલ એડ્રેસ આપી રહ્યા નથી એટલે સ્પામ ની સમસ્યા પણ નથી.

હવે થોડુક આર એસ એસ રીડર વિષે….મેં જણાવ્યુ એમ આર એસ એસ રીડર એક પ્રકાર નું ખાસ બનાવેલ સોફ્ટવેર છે જે આર એસ એસ ફીડ ને પ્રોસેસ કરીને તેને વાંચી શકાય તેવા સ્વરૂપમાં પ્રસ્તુત કરે છે.
ઘણા ઓનલાઈન / ઓફલાઈન આર એસ એસ રીડર ઉપલબ્ધ છે, પણ મારી પસંદ છે ગૂગલ રીડર, જે ફાસ્ટ, સરળ, તદન ફ્રી અને ભરોસાપાત્ર છે. અહીં કોઈ સોફ્ટવેર ડાઊનલોડ કે ઈન્સટોલ કરવાની જરુર નથી કારણ કે આ ઓનલાઈન છે. બસ ગૂગલ રીડરના હોમપેજ પર જાઓ અને લોગીન થયા બાદ તમારી ફેવરીટ ફીડ એડ કરો….એડ કર્યા પછી તરતજ તેને તમે સરળ રીતે તરતજ વાચી શક્શો…તમારા ઈનબોક્સ માં લીસ્ટ થતા ઈમેઈલ ની જેમજ આ પોસ્ટસ ની યાદી તમને દેખાશે….

જો તમે અધ્યારૂ નું જગત સબસ્ક્રાઈબ કરેલું હોય તો તમને આવી યાદી જોવા મળશે…

શરુઆતમાં તમને આ આર એસ એસ રીડર વાપરવામાં તકલીફ પડે પણ ધીરે ધીરે જો તમે તેનો વપરાશ કરી શકો તો તે તમને ખૂબ ઊપયોગી સાધન છે અને અમારા જેવા સાઈટ પર કામ કરતા એન્જીનીયર્સને ઉપયોગી માહીતી, બ્લોગ અપડેટ કે ન્યૂઝ માટે આ અત્યંત ઊપયોગી છે. તમારી ફેવરીટ વેબસાઈટ કે બ્લોગ સાથે સંકળાયેલા રહેવા માટે આ ખૂબ ઝડપી અને સરળ ઊપાય છે.

Before RSS, several similar formats already existed for syndication, but none achieved widespread popularity or are still in common use today, as most were envisioned to work only with a single service. The basic idea of re-structuring metadata information about web sites has been traced back at least as far as 1995, and the work of Ramanathan V. Guha and others at Apple Computer’s (now – Apple) Advanced Technology Group developing the Meta Content Framework (MCF).[2] Other early work on XML syndication formats, including RDF, took place at Netscape, Userland Software, and Microsoft. RDF Site Summary, the first version of RSS, was created by Ramanathan V. Guha of Netscape in March 1999 for use on the My Netscape portal. This version became known as RSS 0.9.[3][verification needed] In July 1999, responding to comments and suggestions, Dan Libby produced a prototype tentatively named RSS 0.91[4] (RSS standing for Rich Site Summary), that simplified the format and incorporated parts of Dave Winer’s Scripting News format. [5] This they considered an interim measure, with Libby suggesting an RSS 1.0-like format through the so-called Futures Document.[6]

In April 2001, in the midst of AOL’s acquisition and subsequent restructuring of Netscape properties, a re-design of the My Netscape portal removed RSS/XML support. The RSS 0.91 DTD was removed during this re-design, but in response to feedback, Dan Libby was able to restore the DTD, but not the RSS validator previously in place. In response to comments within the RSS community at the time, Lars Marius Garshol, to whom (co?)authorship of the original 0.9 DTD is sometimes attributed, commented, “What I don’t understand is all this fuss over Netscape removing the DTD. A well-designed RSS tool, whether it validates or not, would not use the DTD at Netscape’s site in any case. There are several mechanisms which can be used to control the dereferencing of references from XML documents to their DTDs. These should be used. If not the result will be as described in the article.” [7]

Effectively, this left the format without an owner, just as it was becoming widely used.

A working group and mailing list, RSS-DEV, was set up by various users and XML notables to continue its development. At the same time, Winer unilaterally posted a modified version of the RSS 0.91 specification to the Userland website, since it was already in use in their products. He claimed the RSS 0.91 specification was the property of his company, UserLand Software.[8] Since neither side had any official claim on the name or the format, arguments raged whenever either side claimed RSS as its own, creating what became known as the RSS fork.

The RSS-DEV group went on to produce RSS 1.0 in December 2000.[9] Like RSS 0.9 (but not 0.91) this was based on the RDF specifications, but was more modular, with many of the terms coming from standard metadata vocabularies such as Dublin Core.

Nineteen days later, Winer released by himself RSS 0.92,[10] a minor and supposedly compatible set of changes to RSS 0.91 based on the same proposal. In April 2001, he published a draft of RSS 0.93 which was almost identical to 0.92.[11] A draft RSS 0.94 surfaced in August, reverting the changes made in 0.93, and adding a type attribute to the description element.

In September 2002, Winer released a final successor to RSS 0.92, known as RSS 2.0 and emphasizing “Really Simple Syndication” as the meaning of the three-letter abbreviation. The RSS 2.0 spec removed the type attribute added in RSS 0.94 and allowed people to add extension elements using XML namespaces. Several versions of RSS 2.0 were released, but the version number of the document model was not changed.

In November 2002, The New York Times began offering its readers the ability to subscribe to RSS news feeds related to various topics. In January, 2003, Winer called the New York Times’ adoption of RSS the “tipping point” in driving the RSS format’s becoming a de facto standard.

In July 2003, Winer and Userland Software assigned ownership of the RSS 2.0 specification to his then workplace, Harvard’s Berkman Center for the Internet & Society.[12]

In January 2005, Sean B. Palmer, Christopher Schmidt, and Cody Woodard produced a preliminary draft of RSS 1.1.[13] It was intended as a bugfix for 1.0, removing little-used features, simplifying the syntax and improving the specification based on the more recent RDF specifications. As of July 2005, RSS 1.1 had amounted to little more than an academic exercise.

In April 2005, Apple Computer released Safari 2.0 with RSS Feed capabilities built in. Safari delivered the ability to read RSS feeds, and bookmark them, with built-in search features. Safari’s RSS button is a blue rounded rectangle with RSS written inside in white, Safari’s RSS icon/button. The favicon displayed defaults to a newspaper icon Safari’s feed favicon..

In November 2005, Microsoft proposed its Simple Sharing Extensions to RSS.[14]

In December 2005, the Microsoft IE team and Outlook team announced in their blogs that they will be adopting the feed icon first used in the Mozilla Firefox browser , effectively making the orange square with white radio waves the industry standard for both RSS and related formats such as Atom. Also in February 2006, Opera Software announced they too would add the orange square in their Opera 9 release.

In January 2006, Rogers Cadenhead relaunched the RSS Advisory Board with a view to continuing the development of the RSS format and resolving ambiguities. In June 2007, the board revised their version of the specification to confirm that namespaces may extend core elements with namespace attributes, as Microsoft has done in Internet Explorer 7. In their view, a difference of interpretation left publishers unsure of whether this was permitted or forbidden. No press account of the differences between the Winer spec and the Cadenhead spec for RSS 2.0 is included in this article’s references, though blog searches in May, 2007 find private opinions that the two specs are very similar.

In January 2007, as part of a revitalization of Netscape by AOL, the FQDN for my.netscape.com was redirected to a holding page in preparation for an impending relaunch, and as a result some news feeders using RSS 0.91 stopped working. The DTD has again been restored.
