(To anyone checking in who hasn’t checked in for a bit – this is a follow-up to an earlier post composed on Saturday. You can view Idles of Joy if you’re keen to latest entries – it’s more conventional than how this follow-up will likely unfold…)

Just when you think you’ve got some fair portion of things “figured out” - however you may define it – the unexpected happens and demands a reconsideration. No, really! (“A moose once bit my sister! No, really!” That’s why I say that all the time…)

As you might guess, I am experiencing an example of this, and it’s happening right now. Right as I type this…

The time of this typing is very late Sun night, actually the wee hours Monday. This is where the magic happens, you see…for my mind’s voice has been working overtime today, and things must be uttered aloud…as it were…

…and I posted Idles of Joy on Saturday, my first post in over four months…
…and I checked back here much later to see whether my traffic happened to go beyond the 7-9 hits a day I’d been getting over these past four months of not-posting…
…and my hit rate skyrocketed (comparatively) to 34 hits…
…and TODAY it leapt over that number, currently sitting at 64 hits…
…and that NEVER has happened to me after a post. Quite anomalous, in fact…
…and the hits have nothing to do with my latest post. They’re almost all viewing my page God of Fear/God of Love…
…(the page contains a brief excerpt from Richard Moss’ book The Mandala of Being)
…and it’s all coming from e-mail links (I can tell they’re mail links, tho I cannot tell whom).

I find that extraordinary, and I can offer no explanation. The instance of this, though, compels me to speak more…
So, in no particular order:

Tonight – Sunday – I’ve spent a lot of time staring at the waxing gibbous moon, wondering whether anyone else was joining me in that moment, and whether that joining had any meaning. I decided YES, there were others joining me, though it likely I did not know them…and I decided that YES, it was meaningful that so many of us (a not-unreasonable extrapolation) were staring at this orb whose only light is borrowed (a concept I myself borrowed from yet another Tool song) – just as we borrow all that we do from the same source. And I wondered whether any of the other starers got the sense of thankfulness that I did not only for that, but for the clouds that covered parts of the night sky parts of the time, and for the wind that kept the clouds moving across my intersection with the moon and created such a dramatic effect; and I wondered how that light would appear in a location of less human density. And all these thoughts of moon and connection and time and the collective leaning upon the sun…alll moving into vaporware with nowhere to share and nowhere to go until I chose to make this paragraph.

Last night I educated my brother-in-law on a movie he’d never seen which was playing on television: Casablanca. and I smiled gently as we talked about the famous quotes both said and unsaid:
- “Play it, Sam! Play it! If she can take it, so can I.” (Bogart never says, “Play it again, Sam.)
- “We’ll always have Paris.”
- “Here’s looking at you, kid.”
And I smiled at having sat through it yet again, letting it wash through me.

I spoke to my niece & godchild Michele Saturday, explaining that I’d planned on finishing a long-overdue post and how it was not an act of purposeful silence that kept me quiet but a lack of anything inspiring or new to say. “I’ve pretty much said it all, and I don’t want to be repetitive,” I would tell her, knowing full well of how the various pages of this site already contain much of my philosophy in one form or another, and many of the same ideas weave their way in different forms on these pages……AND YET, I am reminded through the extreme traffic on the God of Fear/God of Love page, and my own re-reading of the content on that page, how far removed I am in these days of my life FROM Dr. Moss’ considerations of fear and love that hummed so sweetly through my brain and through so many of my other writings, and how I would do well to read through my own content again and again, and remind myself again and again of how things could well be best served…

…for the milestone of this year – 2009 – is not lost on me. Thirty years ago I had a life-altering autumn and winter – I’d forgotten about the specific anniversary date of late September (which was a happy occurrence in itself), but as I feel the light change and the days shorten, I know I require a girding of sorts. So, sure, staring at the moon can’t necessarily by light therapy, but I know from whence its light comes, and I’ll take sunlight any way I can get it. As relaxing as these past three days have been with my sister, I will return soon to Harrisburg and pick it all up again.

And I will continue the effort of living with honor and integrity.
And I will continue the effort to lead with love and patience.
And as I find myself sinking further and further into “what Philip wants” I will remind myself of fear and love, and I will continue the effort to live without fear and without assertion – to exist and live without insisting on my own behalf.
And I will forgive my inability to achieve perfection in this endeavor, knowing that I am human and fallible, and that I can create no expectations in me, for me, except to continue making my best effort, to accept the consequences of my actions, and to learn from my mistakes.
And when I falter (not ‘if’) I will return here to this site and remind myself of my best words and the inspirational words of others I have included here…

…for it’s not to be said once and then done…and then ignored…

It’s to be endorsed, reminded, nudged again to the fore, over and over…

…for we ARE mere mortals, and that which eludes our understanding will either suggest an opportunity or drive us away. If we drive ourselves away, we will forget…and the reminders of love must again be brought and revered to help pull us towards itself.

Good night now.
(Hit count for that page jumped to 78 just in the time it took me to type this post.)
Thanks for listening.

As always, I’ve been perusing our dear Internet for ideas on how to improve this place’s

As always, I’ve been perusing our dear Internet for ideas on how to improve this place’s visibility and appeal. My findings were quite useful, probably because I’m such a noob that nearly anyone’s advice is more than I already know. Check out this neat quote I found:

“Blogs are often too internally focused and ignore key usability issues, making it hard for new readers to understand the site and trust the author.” -Jakob Nielsen

This is the summary of an article on the top ten weblog design mistakes. I’ll interact with several of those points here, but you can click the link if you want it from the horse’s mouth. As they say. Sounds kind of offensive to me. Some of the points, while valid, were ones I chose to ignore because I’m not running a professional blog. I have strong preferences too, and where better to exercise them than on my own website? But I do care about you too. How can I serve you?

The first mistake was a lack of author biography on many blogs. Which I’m guilty of. I’ve been meaning to update that, so I’ll do that now. I’m supposed to write something that will get you to trust me – my expertise and my sincerity. My natural instinct is to let the writing speak for itself, but I guess it makes sense that you would want to know more about where I’m coming from.

I’m going to take a rain check on the author photo, however (I don’t understand that idiom either, could someone who runs a blog explaining such things enlighten me? I’m too lazy to Google it. My, my). I prefer to let your imaginations roam freely, but I will start you off by disclosing that I have brown hair. Do I have a peg leg? Is my hair naturally brown or just dyed currently? Am I Asian? Indian? Hmm…stick around.

Apparently my titles are inadequate. They’re too cute and humorous (aw, thanks for saying I’m funny! See, what you don’t understand is that I’m practically a prostitute for humor permeation. An out-of-business prostitute, ugh). Titles should be far more informational, for they’re the most valuable words I type. People on average only read the first three or four words of a title, according to the article. And they don’t want to be messed with. I think I may politely decline on this point too, however. I like my titles. I’ll count on the tags to pull you guys in.

I haven’t done too much with links yet (although you’ll notice an increase already in this article), but because I plan to this next warning is also useful. I need to be clear about where my links lead. I like this line: “Life is too short to click on an unknown.” How true. And yet not…one could argue that life is too short to only click on what you know. Those “life is too short” arguments are typically fallen. But point taken. I think I’ve been doing a decent job; you’ll find on my title page that I explain the difference between clicking on the Writing tab at the top and clicking on the categories list to the right. I also detail how to subscribe to the RSS feed, because up until recently I myself did not know about this feature and its capabilities. Even now that I know about it and use it to keep up with the news (in theory), I’m terrible about checking it. I’m sure you’re more diligent, so to be added to your subscription list would truly be an honor.

Good reminder to keep my most popular posts accessible, so new readers can get the best first, and also to link to other posts from entries that reference them, so readers can get the whole picture. Obvious stuff, but like I said, I’m a noob. I’m also completely guilty as charged of “mixing topics”. But I did tell you in my disclaimer that I wouldn’t keep these linear. I will completely knowingly wander around a bit, or a lot. I want to, so like always, the desire will trump the logic. I hope you’re okay with that. If you ask nicely, I could write a really focused post on a topic of your choice.

Here’s a helpful hint for Mac users: When clicking on links, hold down the command key to open that link in a new tab so you don’t lose the original article. There’s no telling how long a simple ‘Back’ function will take. If you have a PC, I’m sure there’s some equivalent. I’m not a hater, I used Windows for eighteen years of my life. Yes, I was using a computer from the day I was born, yes.

Mixed topics are, at present, a characteristic of this blog. You get a little of everything. I have been told it makes the entries seem more ‘real’. You may think differently. Never fear, I plan to diversify. At least I’m not putting posts in numerous categories. I would not have thought that anyone would be guilty of that, but there wouldn’t be a warning if there weren’t the mistake, right?

Funny story: I was at the contract-signing for my new job (English teacher, detailed here) and as we were going through the contract, the staff member mentioned that every clause in the document is there because some past employee has attempted said activity. That’s hilarious, considering how comprehensive the contract was. For example, I’m required to wear a dark suit to work. “It doesn’t have to be black – it could be navy, or dark ash…we just ask that you don’t show up looking like a pimp.” Haha. I would’ve liked to see that. Maybe not a funny story? Okay. Mediocre recollection of an amusing occurrence.

I’m supposed to write like my future boss will read this. Or my future wife (that wasn’t in the article but I think it goes right along with boss and might be even more worthy of consideration). I understand that. But I take it with a grain of salt. The chances that either of them will ever view this is quite low at present. The chances that they’ll be offended is significantly lower. I tend to think I’m a naturally inoffensive guy, except to easily-offended people. But on the other hand, I can never know what someone will take issue with. I do have strong opinions. You can call me out if you want. We can talk.

And finally, having a domain name owned by someone else. Yes, WordPress. I’m alright with that. Sure, it screams newbie. I’m not doing this for a living; I don’t consider it worth paying any money for just yet. At least WordPress is better than Geocities. What the heck is a Geocity.

Those are the top ten weblog mistakes I found, as told by Mr. Nielsen. I’m sure there are many more I’m committing as we speak (merely an expression used here for endearment). Ah well. Live and learn. Live and earn.

Before when I was in the bathroom I had a great idea for a new wing I could add to this building. I’m really excited about it, so maybe it’ll already be started by the time you read this. I’m thinking about calling it ‘Introductions’.

Nice to meet you.

Similar to what I said in my last post, I’ve been thinking about how to make this site more ap

Similar to what I said in my last post, I’ve been thinking about how to make this site more appealing to draw more visitors. I was thinking of what leads me to a blog. Not much, to be honest. I don’t read many blogs, which is probably a result of my poor opinion of them. In general I find blogs to be painful due to the poor grammar, boring due to the blogger writing about things I and the rest of the world have very little interest in, and distasteful because of the often cheap backgrounds and website structure. And now I see that my blog, as much as I try to avoid calling it that, basically falls under the above description. I most fervently hope I can at least avoid the first faux pas, however. I’ll take a properly written boring blog over a grammatically heinous moderately intriguing piece any day. Is that true? I suppose it depends on how far ‘moderately intriguing’ can stretch. My point is, get the grammar right, folks. I can bear terrible structure and irrelevant content. Just please be a little more careful with the easy stuff. There’s no excuse. You’re doing a bad job of representing yourself to the public, no matter how much you swear that no one cares. I judge you when you use poor grammar, that’s why I joined a Facebook group saying just that. See, I’m an activist for positive change. Ha. As if joining groups changes anything. Remember that.

So now all of you will be jumping on my every typo, right? That’s the idea. I figure if I ask you guys to let me know of any mistakes in my writing you’ll feel like I’m using you and won’t do it, but if I give you the opportunity to prove me a hypocritical bastard, well, that’s just too juicy to pass up, isn’t it? That’s what I should’ve done in high school to get decent peer editing – claim my grammar was perfect, my flow was excellent, and my conclusions impeccable. Ever get the feeling your fellow students didn’t really care about your essay or what grade you got? News flash: they didn’t.

That reminds me of Zoolander, which I watched last night, like I said before. There’s a funny bit involving the phrase “Earth to…” which I would say is probably the funniest part of the movie. Yeah, it’s not too funny. I was disappointed. It wasn’t worth my time. So few movies are, don’t you think? One of these days I’ll probably put out some really harsh movie reviews just to let out steam and increase this load of content not getting read.

I think the main thing is that I’m just sick of Ben Stiller. I think I was sick of him the first movie I saw him in. I just don’t find him funny.

But that’s enough on that. I accomplished my grammar goal. My primary objective is to discover what makes a blog appealing, even return-worthy, and how I can utilize that to gain followers and make money. Muahahaha.

Kidding. I would like to make money, and I will shamelessly flaunt ads to do so (barring those Evony travesties), but this isn’t about gaining followers. I would like to someday be able to call it a community of creators and appreciators, so I need to spend time thinking about how to get to that point.

I just read a blog article entitled “The Top 10 Snipers in History” or something along those lines. I saw it in some list on WordPress and clicked on it because I’m very interested in snipers. So what my articles need are captivating titles. They also need relevant and popular tags so that they’ll show up in searches. I would say that so far I’m succeeding in these two things. What’s left is to enlarge my content stash.

And how to keep readers here once they arrive? Well, interesting articles, for one. That’s so subjective. In the future I may write to please readers – when I actually have readers – but for now I’m sticking with what interests and pleases and satisfies me (as far as content and style). I had another thought earlier. The blog has to do something for the reader. If I’m putting out wonderful works of literature and especially poetry, that’s good enough on its own because readers will be inspired by the works and attempt to liberate their own creativity, or simply bask in the beauty. But I’m not. I hope to, but I’m not currently. So I need to help you out somehow to motivate you to return here the next time you’re in need. Good but not great prose needs practicality – the interest keeps you reading, the help brings you back.

Something like a guide to further information. That would be the simplest, probably. That list of snipers would’ve been greatly enhanced by links to websites with more information, which I’m sure exist because the author definitely wasn’t writing off the top of his head. I haven’t really written any information articles yet – but then again all my posts are information to a certain degree. So I should consider offering links for further enlightenment. It’ll at least draw the frantically procrastinating middle schoolers.

DIY (not DUI) blogs seem to be fairly popular. So I might want to consider putting that sort of slant on some of my articles. Surely I have plenty I could teach how to do. Mm…like fruit revolutions, for example. I’ve been meaning to make a video about that and post it on Youtube.

Speaking of videos, I also thought of making a video on how to get a job in Japan, a detailed version of Andy’s which I linked in another post, put it on Youtube as a reply to said video, and include a link to this blog in that description. That would surely draw a few bored surfers. Andy has a pretty sizeable fan base which I can take advantage of (I mean that in the most parasitic way possible).

Until then, I guess I won’t be seeing you, because you haven’t yet arrived, but you will.

-Grant

Greetings. Welcome to Acoustic Eagle’s Views, my place of sharing my findings on matters psych

Greetings. Welcome to Acoustic Eagle’s Views, my place of sharing my findings on matters psychological. I have such a fascination with human nature that, over the past couple of years, I have spent many hours and many blog modules at 360, which is now gone, and at Multiply, which I left, sharing my musings on the subject.

Both old blog sites contained my entire blog history. But I found, in that peculiar spirit of social networking, that not everybody was so keen on reading my short essays and miniseries on psychology. Why was this? Well, if you’re going to talk about human nature – be prepared to face what many would prefer not to. If not ‘face’ then consider what you may not particularly want to – human nature being the not always pleasant thing it is (to put it mildly).

So! I’ve commenced this new wordpress site to contain only those particular scribblings on psychology. And if you are here, then you too are interested in finding out about your fellow human beings. Good for you! It’s an adventure of exploration.

And you never know, that’s if you stick around, what you might glean here. I would add that in some of my old blogs I say that some things I’ve discovered just might save your life! Human relationships can be tricky, so sometimes foreknowledge can lead to avenues of preparedness, peace – or escape!

For a fuller explanation of what this site’s about, click on the hyperlinked ’site intro’ (under site header).

What I’m first planning to do is copy some old blog, edit that and republish. This may take some time. Now to seek out those files and get them here….

Just before 5:30 pm this afternoon, PARWICH.ORG received its 250,000th page view – which isn’t bad going, considering that we only launched the site 19 months ago.

Stats buffs might like to know that in that time, we’ve published 2,203 blog posts and we’ve received almost the same number of comments: 2,158 in total. (There have also been over 14,000 spam comments, which are automatically removed by our blogging software – why do these people bother?) We’ve also uploaded a frankly astonishing 4,245 images onto the site – and if you only knew what a tedious process it was to upload each image, you’d be even more astonished!

We’re currently averaging about 470 page views a day, and our busiest day was July 1st 2009, when we received a whopping 1,772 page views as a result of Wakes Week. Our most viewed page on the site, by some considerable distance, is the first Photos page, while our most viewed blog post – bizarrrely enough, but that’s Google for you! – is “Easter Cards & Scrapbooking with the WI“. And finally, our most clicked outbound link is the Paypal donation page, followed by the Ashbourne News Telegraph.

We hope you’ve enjoyed the ride so far. It can be a bumpy ride from time to time – and it has certainly been a learning process for all of us – but those of us who work on the blog team remain committed to reflecting as many aspects of village life as we are able to squeeze onto one website. Thanks for reading, and thanks to all who have contributed so far. We’ll do another trumpet-blowing, self-congratulatory post when we reach the half million!

It’s about intensity – and providing a link between the intensity required to make the music – and the intensity required for the business. People have to help each other out – in the interest of keeping the art new, creative, intense and alive.

All independent jazz musicians are welcome to submit their biographies and promote upcoming gigs with us. Obviously, we’re just getting started here – but as we get into our groove – we’ll have community calenders available, advising of everyone’s upcoming performances, and any track releases. We hope to provide this site as a resource to other musicians – post your tips, questions, suggestions, album recommendations, reviews, sarcastic comments, post ads for things you’re looking for – or things that you’re looking to get rid of (but please no stinky shower flops circa 1994 – no one wants them, and I doubt they relate in any way to music).

There has been debate as to whether we should use the PDF format for information accessible through posts on the site. PDFs have the advantage that we do not need to copy and reformat the information into posts and for some contributors such as Parish Councils it ensures official information remains in the format they agreed. Also use of PDFs means the information can be printed out by the reader in the form intended regardless of the web browser they use.

Most computers now are supplied with PDF reader software already loaded, alternatively relevant software can be downloaded for free from Adobe (click here to download Adobe Reader). However some people find the need to switch into a different format irritating or even confusing.
