Anybody reading this has already gathered that I am a PR student. But let’s go beyond that, shall we?

My name is Alisha and I am a senior at CSU-Fresno. I originally wanted to major in business but had such a positive experience with the public relations department when I transferred that I felt it more strongly suited me.

Just last week, I made it official and added an English minor to my degree. So on top of an insane amount of writing for my major, I’ve willingly added a stack of additional reading materials to my study pile. The good news is I enjoy writing and am such an avid reader that I have been called everything from a bookworm to an addict. I wouldn’t argue if somebody were to suggest that I had added the minor in order to have an excuse to read more novels. Yes, I am supporting a habit.

My dream job, and what I answer whenever anybody asks, “And what do you want to do with a PR degree?” (and the usually do) is to work as a personal manager in the music business. I would love to help bands work to fulfill their dreams.

In addition to school, I volunteer with the Muscular Dystrophy Association. I’ve been involved with them for about six or seven years now and am now an intern as well. It’s been one of the best experiences I’ve ever had, from working the phones and doing clerical work,  to being a camp counselor in the summer.

I also work as the Fresno TV Examiner at Examiner.com where I get the chance to write about and publish the latest Television news. And of course, I started this blog in case two in-class writing assignments a week and those articles weren’t enough. What can I say? I do enjoy writing.

Currently each programmer writing a bot for Google Wave is able to write whatever they want, sometimes providing support, but using their own, custom syntax. Having a set of commands which all (or many) bots implement would make the user experience far better, as users would then be able to easily find out how to use the bot, or where to find additional help.

Sure it’s turkey season.  Everyone is gearing up towards Thursday.  They are picking up their pre-ordered fresh birds, defrosting frozen ones, getting a brine bath ready, or attempting a dry-brine possibly for the first time.

I prefer to be a guest and bring wine for the holiday.  But this year because of family illness I may be sitting this one out.

So I am contemplating what to make for a small informal thanksgiving at home.  And really the answer could not be clearer to me.  Roast chicken.  Chicken, especially a smaller 3-3 ½ pound chicken, is really the perfect balance between meat and skin.  You might be able to make a case for slightly smaller game birds, but it would be difficult.

Turkeys clearly don’t have enough skin.  It’s just a sad and regrettable fact.  Even a smaller turkey will yield piles of meat, but only a few precious strips of crisp delicious skin.  I’m no slave to convention.  Besides, anyone who tells you that Thanksgiving is all about the turkey is full of poppycock.  The turkey is beautiful eye candy.  It is a great symbol of abundance, and at one point was a strong contender for our national bird.

But turkey itself is merely the canvas for the rest of the meal: the stuffing, the cranberry sauce, the gravy, the potatoes, etcetera.  Tomorrow I will tell you what single item I believe to be the centerpiece of the meal.

For now I would rather focus on my chicken.

I do not have just any roast chicken in mind.  A special meal calls for the Christopher Kimball Slow Roast Chicken (as featured on pages 220 and 221 of The Cook’s Bible).

When done correctly, the fat underneath the skin melts away, enriching the flesh, and the skin itself crisps up with a cracker-like snap.  It’s truly remarkable.  And the white meat stays juicy, even as the dark meat is thoroughly cooked through.  The downside to all this alchemy is that the process probably isn’t approved by any government organization responsible for food safety.

So, you have been warned.  And even Mr. Kimball says, “A slow roasted chicken should never be stuffed or trussed.”  Again, I would highly recommend that you buy this book.  It is a great read and a great resource.

This is not a chicken obscured by other competing flavors.  There are no herbs under the skin.  There isn’t a special marinade.  Besides the 3 – 3½ pound chicken the only other ingredients are melted butter, salt and freshly ground black pepper.

This is a technique for making the chicken taste its best.

And it starts with making sure the chicken is perfectly dry, inside and out.  Did I say perfectly?  That means perfectly.  Paper towels are your friend here.  You will a lot of them.  And they will be covered with lovely raw chicken juices.  So have a big empty trash can nearby.

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.

Brush the perfectly dry chicken with melted butter, and then the book says to “sprinkle it liberally with salt and freshly ground black pepper.”  If you have a high tolerance for salt, I would suggest you sprinkle it generously.

Put the chicken breast side up in the rack of a shallow baking pan.
Cook the chicken like this for half an hour.
Turn down the temperature to 200 degrees and cook for one more hour.
Then crank the oven up to 400 degrees and cook for a quarter hour.

Now it is time to take the bird’s temperature.  It’s done when the thigh is between 170 and 175 degrees and the breast is 175 to 180 degrees.

Take the chicken out of the oven, and let it rest for 20 minutes before carving it.  If you tent this beautiful bird and steam that marvelous crispy skin into a soft mushy mess, I may have to get violent.

I don’t know why I’m giving you this recipe now.  Most of you will have turkey this week.  The lucky few will have goose.  But when your leftovers are finished, remember this post, and make this chicken, and tell me I am wrong.

A quick hour and a half had our guild clearing out the quick instance encounter raids of 10 VoA, Onyxia and ToC. Not much to be said about Vault, as nothing dropped that was relevant to our group.

Onyxia was a bit more generous; our MT, Ahlen, was finally able to grab his Quel’Serrar to replace the Heroic ToC-5 sword, which should be good — though I don’t know enough about tanking to really comment.

And I haven’t checked any blogs, forums or websites today, and I’m sure this has already been mentioned to death, but…
Yeah. Onyxia pets from the WoW anniversary trigger DBM. I’m just glad that the pets didn’t decide to fire those off during the fight. That would’ve been interesting. But unless this gets fixed, or until this gets fixed, I foresee a lot of 50 DKP minus… well, if Onyxia is even on a progression fight in a non-PUG. Which it never is.ToC was also nice to our tanks, though the fights were pretty sloppy. We ended up with a total of 3 crash bungles on Icehowl in a single fight, wiping us at 250K. That was not fun. Nor was one of our DKs killing half the raid with Path of Frost right before Anub’arak.

Most importantly, though, is that I managed to save a trinket from being sharded and add it to my collection of tanky-trinkets. I still don’t have my Black Heart yet, but I’ll get it eventually.
I did, however, manage to grab a Banner of Victory this morning. I don’t need it as SV per-se, but I’ve been considering MM for a few select fights and having the gear options availableis always a welcome idea in my mind.

I’ll close with some ego-stroking; an awesome tank complimented my hunter-ing skills in a chain heroic group today. Apparently I really eased the burden on pulls and babysitting the healer. Hopefully I can keep it up and not get lazy or sloppy.

My work so far …

I currently work almost entirely in sculpture and installation and use photography largely as means of documentation. At present I am working mostly with plastic based materials and oil. I find working with oil and a direct product of it, plastic, creates an intriguing dialogue between raw and processed materials.

The use of plastic and the origin of many of the concepts I am working with at the moment stem from a work I made whilst studying in Munich last year. I made a silicon mold of a cube of wood and cast it in a slightly flexible orange plastic so that one material adopted the texture of another. Casting a replica of one material into another material brought about ideas of simulation. Last semester I carried forward the notion of simulation and made replicas of distinct material objects in different materials than their original make up. For example a log cast in plaster. The original bubble wrap cast made in resin was made at the beginning of this semester as an extension from last semesters concepts. However the casts have taken on new connotations and roles within my work as the semester has progressed.

When looking at simulation I was very interested in surface and how a surface is not necessarily true to its make up. I looked at water surfaces such as rivers and how they reflected the world around them yet the surface which depicted the world surrounding it in two dimensions also concealed another world  in three dimensions beneath it. I read a piece of writing by Jorge Luis Borges  called the Of Exactitude in Science which goes as follows …

In the course of Time, these Extensive maps were found somehow wanting, and so the College of Cartographers evolved a Map of the Empire that was of the same Scale as the Empire and that coincided with it point for point. On the Exactitude of Science made me consider 1:1 maps and I found that someone had stated that a 1:1 map of the world would simply be a mirror above the world. This lead me to putting objects that I had made into trays of black oil solutions which gave a reflection, creating a ‘map’ of them. The originally, unintentionally mountainous forms of the bubble wrap casts when placed in the oil immediately resonated with imagery of icebergs bringing about an association of climate change especially alongside the materials used. I was given some fluorescent plastic discs that glow around the edge. I started using these in the oil trays and they adopted a likeness to science fiction or futuristic urban landscapes. This juxtaposition of the two disparate pieces is reminiscent of the film Koyaanisqatsi which starts out filming epic landscapes and than moves to filming cityscapes and the human and man made.The city of plastic I have created appears to drink in the the oil to power the glow it transmits, missing out the key processes involved in the refinery and the power station. Putting plaster casts in the oil, the objects literally drink in the fluid, the land drinking in the sea in the flooded landscapes. I have recently read J.G. Ballard’s The Drowned World a novel set in the future where solar storms have caused temperatures to soar which in turn have caused the ice caps to melt and flooded vast areas of the world. Ballard’s descriptions of a partially submerged London brings about imagery which I find resonates with aspects of my work.

Casting the resin pieces has shaped very much a love hate relationship between the material and I. Using waste moulds of plaster to cast resin, even with a release agent applied between the two, forms a laborious process of releasing the cast from its mould. I crave a direct interaction with the materials I use. Making them from scratch, and in the case of the the bubble wrap casts, almost going in full circle in terms of creating something very similar from what I had to hand in the first place, and going through a very time consuming act to achieve something nearly pointless can get frustrating. However making them has started to become a compulsion. I both love and loathe chipping away at the plaster for hours on end. The plastic discs are immediately fantastic. Without my touch or intervention they are visually exciting. I merely arrange them to achieve the result I desire. The main struggle I am facing at the moment is over coming the restriction of the studio space and the confining trays I use to contain my works as well as the messy oil solution being limiting yet being a vital material at the same time.

Post หรือ เรื่อง แต่ละเรื่อง มันถูกจำกัดแค่ 315px เท่านั้น (ติดมากับธีม)  ทำให้ดูแคบๆ ไม่กว้าง ระรื่นตาเท่าไหร่  และสี Background ที่คาดเดาไม่ได้ มันจะเปลี่ยนไปตามโทนของรูปภาพเรา ทำให้อาจไม่เข้ากับสีตัวอักษร (ต้องแก้หลายครั้ง) การแทรกรูปภาพอื่นได้ยาก  การแทรกแฟลช หรือ embled วีดีโอ ไม่ได้ (อันนี้ wordpress ไม่อนุญาตอยู่แล้ว)  ฯลฯ

แต่สรุปว่าใช้ Theme นี้แหละ (เพราะเสียเวลาเล่นกับมันมาหลายคืน)

The team behind this blog would like to congratulate the Pub adn on their website, now they are no longer part of the 12.000.000.000 (yes, 12 million) Spanish businesses who have no website.

A week ago, when we were talking about the pub adn and the article we wanted to write about it, their website was only a white square on black background, so they did some work in the meantime, and managed to get a reasonable website, even without the help of Valencia’s best gay-managed web-design business, lovelymedia.

Anyway, next week, on the 27th of November, the pub adn celebrates its 15th birthday, with a great party, of course. They have also got some nice parties on Christmas Eve and St. Stephen’s Day as well as New Year’s Eve, so if you don’t know yet where to spend Christmas or New Year, start thinking about Valencia…
