To make Firefox 3 use Hotmail for mailto links, do the following.

1. Type about:config in the location bar and hit enter.  A warning will come up.  Click “I’ll be careful, I promise!”  The about:config window will appear.
2. At the top of the window, you’ll see a filter field.  Type “gecko” in this field.  The first entry you should see is “gecko.handlerService.allowRegisterFromDifferentHost”; double-click this entry to change the value to true (a true value is bold).
3. Now, copy/paste the following text (between the quotation marks) into the location bar and press Enter: “javascript:navigator.registerProtocolHandler(‘mailto’,'http://hotmail.msn.com/secure/start?action=compose&to=%s’,'Hotmail’);”.  You should see and information bar at the top of the window.  Click “Add Application””  The Hotmail protocol has been added.
4. Click Tools–>Options–>Applications.  Find “mailto”.  In the drop-down, select “Use Hotmail”.  Exit the Options window.
5. Type about.config in the location bar – once again click “I’ll be careful, I promise!” – In the filter, type gecko.  Now, double-click on the “gecko.handlerService.allowRegisterFromDifferentHost” entry to return the value to false.

-Firefox 3.6b 1 only-

Type about:config in the address bar. Next type: startup.homepage_welcome_url. Delete the value (or change it if you’d like) and you’re done.

Depois de ter aprendido como criar um disco na ram, eu resolvi colocar o cache do firefox nesse disco virtual.

1. Digite about:config na barra de endereços do firefox, clique em serei cuidadoso;
2. Clique com o botão direito em qualquer da lista que apareceu e selecione Nova opção – string;
3. escreva: browser.cache.disk.parent_directory;
4. depois coloque o caminho da pasta, no meu caso foi o disco que está na ram;

Reinicie o firefox e pode ser conferido digitando about:cache na barra de endereços.

Şimdi herkes diyordur e madem hızlanacak bunu niye Firefox hazırlanırken yapmıyorlar. Bunun tek açıklaması bana göre işlemciler de belli bir saat hızında gelmesine rağmen kullanıcının isteğine bağlı olarak hız aşırtma(overclock) yapılabilmesine benzer bir sebeptir.  İşlemcinize overclock yaparsanız risk alırsınız. Buna karşılık daha yüksek saat hızları elde edersiniz. Şimdi biz de Firefox’umuzu biraz daha hırçınlaştıracağız. Firefox geekleri sağolsun çalışmışlar derlemişler.

1. Enable pipelining

Tarayıcıların normal çalışması sunucuya istek gönderip ondan cevap beklemek ve ondan sonra devam etmek şeklindedir. Pipelining(tam Türkçe karşılığı yok ama paralel olarak işleme gibi bir anlamdadır bilgisayar dünyasında) daha agresif bir yöntemdir. Sunucudan cevap almayı beklemeden  çoklu istekler yollayabilir. Bu tekniği aktifleştirmek için:

- Firefox’un adres çubuğuna about:config yazıp girilir. Ekrana bir uyaru çıkacak “Söz veriyorum dikkatli olacağım!” butonuna basılır ve karşımıza baya uzun bir ayar listesi çıkar.

- Üstteki süzgeç çubuğundan network.http.pipelining ve

network.http.proxy.pipelining değerlerini bulup sağ tıklayıp değerini değiştir diyerek false’dan true’ya döndürülür ve özellik açılmış olur.

2. Render quickly

Geniş ve karmaşık web sitelerinin indirilmesi uzun sürer. Firefox kullanıcıya bekletmek istemediğinden varsayılan olarak her 0.12 saniyede bir alınan veriyi gösterir. Buna "content notify interval" denir. Her ne kadar bu özellik tarayıcıyı şık ve hareketli gösterse de sürekli olarak yapılan tekrar çizimler toplam sayfa yükleme süresini uzatır. Daha uzun "content notify interval" performansı artıracaktır. Bunun için

- Yine about:config yazılır ve uyarı geçilir.

- Bu kez karşımıza çıkan listeye yeni bir değer eklenmesi gerekir. Bunun için tarayıcı sayfasındaki boş bir yere sağ tıklayıp “Yeni” ye basılır. 3 seçenek çıkar karşımıza. Burada bize gereken “Integer” yani “Sayı” tipidir. Yeni değer için bir isim ister. Buna content.notify.interval yazılır. Ardından yeni değerin büyüklüğünü ister. Buna da 500000 yazılır. OK butonuna basılır

- Yine ekranın boş bir yerinde sağ tıklayıp Yeni->Boolean oluşturulur. Adına content.notify.ontimer verilip değeri True yapılıp OK butonuna basılır.

3. Faster loading

Eğer 0.75 saniye süreyle klavyeye ya da fareye dokunulmazsa (Buna “the content switch threshold” denir) Firefox düşük sıklıklı kesilme moduna girer. Böyle Türkçe yazınca pek anlaşılır olmuyor gerçi ama bu arayüz daha az tepki veriyor ama sayfa daha hızlı yükleniyor anlamına gelir. Bu içerik eşik anahtar değerini azaltmak performansı artırır. Bunun için:

- about:config’den listeye girilir. Boş bir yerde sağ tıklanıp Yeni->Sayı değeri oluşturulur. Adına content.switch.threshold verilir ve değeri de 250000 yapılır.(Çeyrek saniye). OK butonuna basılır.

4. No interruptions

Interrupt, kesilme demektir. Bir iş yapılırken başka bir iş yapılmak istenirse yeni iş öncekinden öncelik bakımından gerideyse önce yapılan kesilerek yenisi yapılır. Bu yapacağımız değişiklikle sayfa yüklenene kadar Firefox arayüzü kullanıcıya tepki vermez. Bu kısa bir süre Firefox’ta tepkisizliğe sebep olabilir. Ayar denenip uygunluğuna bakılabilir.

- about:config’den listeye girilir. Yeni->Boolean oluşturulur. Adına content.interrupt.parsing verilir. Değeri de False olarak ayarlanır.

5. Block Flash

Flash bannerlar ve reklamlar sayfa yüklenmesi oldukça yavaşlatır. Bunları engellemek için Flashblock eklentisi kurulabilir. Linki:

6. Increase the cache size

İnternet dolaşımı esnasında girilen sitelerin içerikleri Firefox tarafından bilgisayarda depolanır. Eğer bellek(RAM) miktarı çoksa Firefox sürekli açık bırakılır ve aynı sayfalar tekrar tekrar açıldığında performans sağlanabilir. Bunun için:

- about:config’den yeni bir sayı değeri oluşturulur. Adına browser.cache.memory.capacity verilir. Değerine de 65536 verilir OK denip tarayıcı baştan başlatılır.

Do you ever get an annoying ‘lag’ while watching videos? This should help:

Type about:config in your Firefox address bar.

Type browser.sessionstore.interval in the filter box (the value default is 10000 milliseconds – meaning your session is saved every 10 seconds).

Click on it and change the value to somewhere between 120000 and 300000 (120000 = 2 minutes; 300000 = 5 minutes). You may need to ‘play with it’ a bit to get it right for your set up.

se quiser colocar apenas 16 megas entao escreva no prompt q ira aparecer: 16384 (nao use 16000 pois nao ira funcionar) quer mais memoria? Escreva entao 32768 (32MB) ou ainda 65536 (65MB) quer mais entao multiplica ai por 2 ou por 3 vc escolhe!

Ou seja, P.N (porra nenhuma)! tem o tal do RamBack, um plugin que faz com que o firefox libere memória quando as abas são fechadas, o minimo que devia acontecer e não acontece, ou seja, se voce abriu 10 abas, consumindo 160 megas quando fecha-las o firefox vai liberar certa quantidade, mas não tudo! voltando apenas pra uns 100MB. foda isso! o plugin acima conseguiu devolver boa parte da memoria voltando nessa conta ai pra uns 50MB, nada mal mas ainda ta péssimo!

No hago un uso regular de la función de retroceso dentro de la misma instancia, ya que voy añadiendo pestañas sin repetir sobre la ventana abierta. He de reconocer que a algunos que usan más los accesos de teclado, esta función ha desaparecido, pero no hay porque preocuparse, Mozilla solo la ha deshabilitado, dejándonos únicamente los botones “Ir a la página anterior” e “Ir a la página siguiente”.

Para habilitar la función de la tecla de retroceso, escribimos about:config en la barra de direcciones –> botón “Tendré cuidado. Lo prometo”–> en el filtro ponemos browser.backspace , hacemos doble clic sobre esa línea y el valor 2 lo pasamos a 0 –> Aceptar.

Ya deberíamos tener dispuesta la función del botón de retroceso.

Desde al menos Firefox 3.5. después de instalar un nuevo complemento y de reiniciar el navegador, Firefox nos muestra la ventana de complementos indicándonos que se ha instalado uno o varios complementos nuevos. A mi me parece correcto y una opción de seguridad que se nos pregunte si queremos instalar un nuevo complemento, si aprobamos el sitio de donde proviene el complemento, incluso que se nos muestre una secuencia de tiempo por seguridad antes de instalarse.

Lo que me parece excesivo es que después de abrir el navegador se nos vuelva a abrir la ventana de complementos confirmando que se ha instalado nuevo/s complemento/s. Para eliminar esta opción,  escribimos en la barra de direcciones about:config, pulsamos el botón “Tendré cuidado. Lo prometo”, en el campo de filtro ponemos app.update.showInstalledUI , hacemos doble clic sobre esa línea y pasamos el valor de “false” a “true“. Listo ya no se nos abrirá la ventana de confirmación.

Pada kesempatan ini gw mau memberikan sedikit tips untuk melakukan setting firefox kita, termasuk di dalamnya menentukan warna background, dan lain-lain…Langkahnya singkat kok, ikutin aja step di bawah ini..

1. Buka Firefox Anda!!

Sebagai bahan experimen, gw make Firefox 3.5. Setau gw sih Firefox tipe-tipe sebelumnya, termasuk Firefox 3.0 juga bisa..

2.  Ketikkan about:config di tempat biasa kita mengetikkan URL atau alamat website tujuan

3.  Biasanya akan ada sebuah notifikasi dari Firefox, yang menjelaskan bahwa upaya kita untuk mengubah settingan yang sudah ada mungkin berdampak pada instabilitas dan ketidakamanan dalam browsing. Oleh karena itu pastikan kita hanya melakukan perubahan pada bagian-bagian yang tidak terlalu kritis, misalnya mengubah background color. Saya tidak merekomendasikan perubahan settingan pada bagian-bagian tertentu, misalnya yang berhubungan dengan kecepatan browsing. Untuk melakukan settinga sangat mudah. Misalnya jika kita ingin mengubah background color, maka pada bagian browser.display.background_color kita modify nilai color code yang ada disitu (default #FFFFFF). Untuk mengubahnya cukup klik kanan pada nilai tersebut, kemudian pilih modify dan masukkan nilai hexadecimalnya. Begitupula pada settingan yang lain, bedanya adalah tidak semuanya bertipe string, ada pula yang boolean, dan juga integer.

4. Apabila settingan sudah selesai dilakukan, coba tutub tab nya atau Firefox nya, dan kemudian jalankan lagi. Selesai deh…:)

Simple changes to ‘about:config’ to speed up Firefox

Type about:config in your address bar (you may get a message asking if you really want to do this – just answer yes).

Now type browser.history in the filter. We’re looking for three entries:

Right click on browser.history_expire_days and choose Modify. Change the value to either 7,14,28 or 56 (I choose 56 just to test it).

Now, right click on browser.history_expire_days_min and again choose Modify. Change the value to 7, 14, 28 or 56 as before (I choose 7 to test it).

And lastly click on browser.history_expire_sites. The default value is set to 40,000. Right click and change the value to 1000.

Restart Firefox for the changes to take effect.

• Shift + Enter for ‘.net’
• Ctrl + Shift + Enter for ‘.org’

Awesome huh!

These are just basic tips. Now lets go little deeper. Hacking ‘about:confin’ is the coolest part. This ‘about:config’ contains all the configuration settings of Firefox. So you should be more careful when handling it.

Accessing ‘about:config’ page  –  type ‘about:config‘ in the address bar. Yes make that promise! and here we go….

These are the configuration entries of about:config. You can filter them by entering the key words in the ‘Filter’ field. All fields can be updated with double clicking on them. Ok lets do some work…

[1]  Control RAM usage

If you’re having low amount of memory in your PC, this option will be useful. Filter ‘browser.cache‘. Double click on ‘browser.cache.disk.capacity‘. The default value will be 50000. If you’re having between 512MB and 1GB of ram, 15000 would be fine.

[2]  Reduce RAM usage further when the browser is minimized.

In ‘about:config‘ right-click anywhere. Then select new boolean. Name it as ‘config.trim_on_minimize‘ and set it to true. Finally restart the browser.

[3]   Disable Antivirus Scanning

This is for windows users. By default Firefox 3 scans all the downloads with the default antivirus software for your protection. But how ever this will reduce your speed (when the file is big). If u want to stop that (but better f you can keep it) edit the following,

‘browser.download.manager.scanWhenDone’ and modify its value into False.

[4]   Handling spell checking in all text fields

Filter ‘layout.spellcheckDefault’. By default the value is 1.

• 1 – spell checker for multi-lines text boxes only.
• 2 – enable the spell checker for all text boxes.
• 0 – disable the spell checker.

[5] Open Search Box Results In New Tab

Filter into  ‘browser.search.openintab‘. By default its value is false, tells to display the search results in the same window. Make it into ‘true’. Then the search results will show in a new tab.

[6] Configure Backspace Button

I like my browser takes me to the previous page when  press  ‘backspace’. Make it your own. Fined ‘browser.backspace_action’. You can have 3 options,

• 0– go back previous page
• 1-page up
• 2-does nothing (default case)

[7] Autohide Toolbar in Fullscreen mode

‘browser.fullscreen.autohide ‘ this config decides whether to show the tool bar or not in fullscrean. True – always auto hide and False – always show.

[8] Configuring the Scrolling Tabs

When you open many tabs a scrolling bar will show up.

And you can use it to find your tabs. Instead of that, you can change the tab width or else make it ‘0′ so that scroll bar will never show up. It’s very easy for me to find what I wanted because every thing is in a single frame. Filter into ‘browser.tabs.tabMinWidth‘ and change the default 100px for your choice.

Maybe you would like to have close buttons for your choice. It’s possible with ‘browser.tabs.closeButtons‘ config. The following options are available,

• 0 – display the close button on the active tab (what I m using)
• 1 – display on all tabs(default)
• 2 -  don’t display any close buttons
• 3 – display a single close button at the end of the tab strip

Cara ni agak tricky skit.. Yang nak cuba boleh cuba. Cara ni saya belajar dari “Ebook->Hacking Firefox” Credit goes to the author.

1. Buka Firefox
2. Type “about:config “ di address bar dan tekan ‘Enter’.
3. Di ‘filter search bar’ taip “network.http.pipelining”. Pastikan ‘value field’ di set  kan kepada ‘true’ kalau tak double klik untuk ubah.

Kata Pengarang buku tu “HTTP is the application-layer protocol that most  web pages are transferred with. In HTTP 1.1, multiple requests can be sent  before any responses are received. This is known as pipelining. Pipelining reduces page loading times, but not all servers support it.”

1. Pergi ke ‘filter search bar’ semula dan taip “network.http.pipelining.maxrequests” Double-click dan setkan value kepada 8
2. Pergi lagi ke ‘filter search bar’ semula dan taip “network.http.proxy.pipelining” Setelah dibuka setkan kepada ‘true’.
3. Taip “network.dns.disableIPv6″ di  ‘filter search bar’ dan set kan kepada ‘true’ kalau tak double klik untuk ubah.

Mit der “Smart Bar” hat in Firefox 3 ein Feature Einzug gehalten, das dem Benutzer das Surferlebnis eigentlich erleichtern soll, das aber auch Nachteile mit sich bringt.

Während des Tippens macht der beliebte Feuerfuchs ständig  Vorschläge, wohin die Reise gehen soll – auf Basis bereits angesurfter Seiten:

Für die meisten Benutzer dürfte dies eine Erleichterung beim Surfen sein. Doch das hübsche Fenster nimmt auch die Sicht auf den darunterliegenden Inhalt und verlangsamt die Performance auf älteren Rechnern. Außerdem surfen viele Menschen in sozialen Umgebungen, wo andere ihnen ständig auf den Bildschirm glotzen. Muss der Abteilungsleiter  denn wirklich sehen können, wieviele Forenbeiträge auf ubuntuusers.de man schon angesurft hat, nur weil man eine Seite ansurft, die eben auch mit “for” beginnt? Als ich neulich bei einem Freund war, wolte er mir eine bestimmte Seite zeigen. Während er diese Seite anwählte, poppte die Smart Bar mit einer ganzen Reihe von Vorschlägen auf, deren Inhalt ich hier lieber nicht wiedergeben möchte… Über einen Menüeintrag lässt sich die Smart Bar offenbar nicht abschalten.

Um die Smart Bar trotzdem zu deaktivieren, geht man so vor:

1. In der Adresszeile “about:config” aufrufen

2. Mit der Filterfunktion die Suche auf “browser.urlbar” eingrenzen

3. Den Wert “browser.urlbar.matchOnlyTyped” auf “true” setzen (Doppelklick)

4. Den Wert  “browser.urlbar.maxRichResults” auf “0” setzen (Doppelklick und Eingabe)

5. Firefox 3 neu starten

Fertig! Der in vorauseilendem Gehorsam geschwätzige Firefox 3 ist zum Schweigen gebracht. Und schließlich gibt es ja immer noch die Browserhistorie bzw. Chronik, über die man angesurfte Seiten erneut aufrufen kann…

Is your Firefox looking bulky? [right click on menubar] > ‘Customize…’. Move all necessary buttons from Navigation toolbar to main menu bar. Remove unnecessary buttons. Remove the dedicated Google search box also. Move the address bar from Navigation bar to main menu bar. Now, un-check View > Toolbars > Navigation Toolbar. Thus, all the buttons and address bar is on main menu bar. And there is no navigation bar. Now you have more client area in Firefox.

The Firefox address bar accepts search queries like in Google Chrome, but the results you get is the result of ‘im feeling lucky’ from Google. I never use that button from Google. You can change ‘im feeling lucky’ to normal Google search results page.

Here is how to do it.

• In address bar type in about:config.
• Type in keyword in the filter box.
• Double click on the item Keyword.URL.
• In the dialog box, change the string to ‘http://www.google.com.my/search?q=‘

This is a major problem that people encounter when using wvdial in Ubuntu . It seems some applications in ubuntu including Firefox web browser starts in offline mode (automatically set) when you connect  to the internet using wvdial . This problem is because those particular applications (including firefox) are tied up with the network manager . Whenever Firefox detects network manager to be disabled it sets itself to offline mode (when using wvdial network manager will be disabled). This basically means that Firefox will refuse to connect to the internet even when the connection is open .

Solution :

Temporary solution:

Make sure to uncheck  File>Work Offline mode every time you open up firefox when using wvdial

Permanent solution :

Alternatively you can set Firefox to start in online mode by default regardless of  Network manager’s status

1) Open up a Firefox window

2) type about:config in the address bar of your FF web browser

It should display a warning . click on the I promise to be safe Button .

3) It displays a number of options in alphabetically order . Go to the browser.offline option and set it as follows

Ever wish you could press in Firefox and get focus on the first form field of the page, ignoring all the links? Or maybe you want to tab between all form elements with the exception of text fields? Or perhaps you want tabbing behaviour that is some combination of the above?

The developers behind Firefox realized that people would want tab behaviour conforming to their personal keyboard accessibility requirements, and to this end they’ve included a very handy means of getting the behaviour you want.

Enter the accessibility.tabfocus configuration.  This property allows you to specify an integer corresponding to a particular tab focusing behaviour.

From the Mozillazine Knowledgebase, the possible values for this property are:

1 – Give focus to text fields only. (The default in OS X.)
2 – Give focus to all form elements except text fields.
4 – Give focus to links (and linked images) only.

The value for accessibility.tabfocus can also be an integer like 7 (which is the default value). 7 (1+2+4) implies that Firefox will focus all field elements and links as well; its effect is the behaviour of 1, 2, and 4, combined.

You can read up a bit more to understand the different values.

For those who have forgotten how to manipulate the advanced configuration preferences in Firefox, you can do so as follows:

Open a new tab and enter “about:config” into the address bar:

Accept the disclaimer that you may break Firefox if you don’t know what you’re doing.  I’d advise the reader to be careful about what they do beyond this point!

Enter “tabfocus” into the Filter field to find the accessibility.tabfocus property:

Now just double click the property to be prompted for a new value.

Personally, I would like to tab through all form fields while ignoring links on the page.  To achieve this outcome, I used a value of 3 (1 + 2), a combination of tabbing through text fields and tabbing through other form fields.

I hope this Helpful Hint is of use to those of you who are big on keyboard accessibility.

Seid einiger Zeit benutze ich “Newsalloy” als RSS-Reader. Allerdings störte mich die fehlende Möglichkeit, die Feeds direkt beim Browsen hinzufügen zu können, wie es Firefox Standard-mäßig z.B. für den Google-Reader beherrscht. Nach kurzem googlen bin ich denn auch auf eine Lösung gestoßen, bei der im de.jar-Archiv des Browser eine .properties-Datei bearbeitet werden sollte, was allerdings nicht geklappt hat, da keine Änderung akzeptiert wurde.

Die Lösung für das Problem:

Im Browser die Seite about:config öffnen, die Warnung wegklicken und bei “Filter” nach browser.contentHandlers suchen. Die ersten 3×3 Zeilen sollten die für die Newsreader sein.

Hier muss nur noch .title und .uri eines nicht verwendeten Newsreader verändert werden, oder alternativ per Rechtsklick / Neuer String 3 neue Zeilen eingefügt und nach dem obigen Schema konfiguriert werden.

In meinem Fall für die Verwendung von NewsAlloy müssen die Strings wie im Bild (rot) verändert werden:

browser.contentHandlers.types.0.title = NewsAlloy
browser.contentHandlers.types.0.type = application/vnd.mozilla.maybe.feed
browser.contentHandlers.types.0.uri = http://www.newsalloy.com/?act=default&rss=%s

Die benötigte URL habe ich bei NewsAlloy in den Einstellungen gefunden, für andere Reader am besten Google bemühen.
