Video editing can test patience and take long. Especially if you work with 5 tapes covering a trip, 7 floats, hundreds of fans, and a galaxy of stars.

Still, our piece on the parade of stars in the 2009 Metro Manila Film Festival captures the glamour, intrigue, avid, and personal that is Pinoy showbiz.

And it’s on my first Christmas as a Kapamilya.

Lunes, ika-7 ng Disyembre sa taong 2009 sa alas singko ng hapon, nag-uusap-usap kami ng aking mga kagrupo kung kailan gagawin ang pag-i-interbyu sa isang aklatan kung saan may maraming koleksyon na mga aklat. Napagkasunduan namin na sa susunod na Lunes namin gagawin ang interbyu. Napagkasunduan namin na ang lugar na i-interbyuhin ay sa Pick A Book matatagpuan sa ABS foundation, Quezon City. Nung una naming pinuntahan ay di kami pinapasok, wala raw formal na letter. Kung tutuusin naman ay meron. Pero ayaw pa rin kaming papasukin. Sabi ko sa sarili ko na hindi ko na yun uulitin. Ngunit hindi kami nawalan ng pag-asa bagkus ay nagpursige pa kami. Naghanap kami ng ibang library. Sa awa naman ng Diyos ay may nahanap kami. Kahit medyo pagod hindi pa rin kami sumuko.

Napadpad kami sa isang aklatan sa loob ng ABS compound. Hirap paniwalaan, hindi ba? Pero nagawa namin.  Kaya sabi ng grupo dun na lang kami total at pwedi naman. Siyempre, tuwang-tuwa kami dahil pinyagan kaming makapanayam ang officer-in-charge sa aklatan na yun.

Ayon sa aming nakapanayam na si Maria Cristina Hilares, isang officer-in-charge, itinayo ang aklatan na iyon for knowledge. Siya ay nagtatrabaho mahigit tatlong buwan na. Naging sale representative siya hangang naging OIC o Officer-in-charge. Ginawa ito upang lumawak ang industriya ng mga libro. May mga second hand na mga libro pero maaari pang gamitin.  Ito’y itinatag mahigit dalawang taon na. Ang nagmamay-ari nito ay dating basketball player na si June Adrian Limpot.

May walong branches na sila pero ang iba ay hindi pa nagbubukas. Nagdideliver sila ng anim na mga kahon na may lamang isangdaan at limampung libro bawat kahon. Hindi naman masyadong marami, hindi ba? Nagkakaroon din sila ng delivery twice a week. Kadalasan nilang mga kostumer ay mga artista. Labinlima ang average ng mga tao na bumibili o nagbabasa. Ang kanilang mga libro ay galing pa sa ibang bansa o imported. Ayon pa kay Ms. Hilares ang mga libro nila ay affordable ng mga mamimili. Klasi-klasi ang kanilang mga libro; may fiction at non-fiction, pocket books, mga diktionaryo, at marami pang iba.

Ang purpose sa pagtatayo ng Pick a book ay dahil para naman mapakinabangan ang mga librong dapat pang mapakinabangan. Instead na itatapon ang mga librong hindi na ginagamit, hinihingi o kaya’y binibili nila ito para magamit ulit ng mga tao.  Ang kanilang mga libro ay swak sa bulsa ng mga sambayanang Pilipino na kapus sa karangyaan sa buhay. Klasi-klasing libro ang kanilang binibinta at higit sa lahat ang mga presyo ay mura kaya naman naging swak ito para sa ating lahat. Kahit karamihan sa kanilang mga libro ay second hand, nagagamit pa rin ito. Maaayos ang mga hitsura ng mga aklat kaya’t di mo aakalaing mga second hand na ito.

I can’t believe my eyes as I read the news. ABS-CBN reports on child soldiers allegedly used by powerful political families like the Ampatuans to carry out killings of political rivals and other enemies in Maguindanao.

In a report posted at the News website, a 25 year old man was allegedly hired by the family when he was still 12 years old to be one of their personal assassins.

At 12 years old and dressed in his school boy clothes, he has already killed a man belonging to a rival political family. Now in his late 20s and serving 10 years out of a 15-year sentence in the Sultan Kudarat Provincial Jail, he estimated that he already killed hundreds for the Ampatuan clan.

He did this without question. Each hit done systematically and precisely. He has killed the elderly and even the young. There was no exception.

And in exchange: the chance to study from 4th grade to 3rd year in high school.

I used to think that stories such as these exist only in B-movies, where outrageous plots vie for attention along with the talentless actors and actress hamming it up in celluloid.

Where was I when I was 12? Oh–I was bespectacled, pimply and currently obsessed with Sweet Valley Twins and Nancy Drew. I was a major geek, trying to wow teachers in my little state-run school. In short–at 12, I was a kid

At 12, this man was a mean-killing machine. Stripped of innocence and soul and emotion by the same people elected by his parents to run the government. I just want to check the story if this was just a plot for a new Hollywood movie, but each time I click the play button…I am reminded that it is indeed, a sad and heart-breaking reality.

I don’t know about you, but the Kanto Boyz can always put a smile on my face……..

This year, the networks had it again! The never-ending network war is more alive this Christmas. ABS-CBN and GMA networks respectively aired their Christmas Station IDs last month. Thus, debates all over the internet community were spurred. Whose Station ID is better? This time, I’ll examine the station ID of both networks. I’m not a very good critic but for fun, I’ll do it. After you read this, violent reactions are allowed. So Kapamilya and/or Kapuso Fanatics, brace yourselves.

With the Station ID’s opening lines “Dumaan man sa malakas na alon, lahat tayo ay makakaahon”, the station made clear that the previous typhoons that hit the country can never struck the Filipinos down. The network did not only cast their big stars but also ordinary people who portrayed the message that when we all help each other especially those in need, nothing can destruct us.

Towards the middle of the video, one can see the networks roster of stars holding miniature parols. This is quite the usual formula of ABS-CBN station IDs in the past, and this one is not an exemption. Although it is quite annoying to see their bankable stars shown throughout the duration of the 5-minute video which completely ruined the message that it is suppose to convey, the background song made a catch-up. Upon hearing the song when I first saw the video, I instantly had a last song syndrome. Because of its catchy melody, the song is the most unforgettable element of the whole station ID. It won the hearts of many since I’m hearing different people sing this song on public places.

But as my Communication teacher would tell our class, another downfall of this station ID of the Kapamilya network is the use of the term ‘Bro’ on its tagline, “Bro, ikaw ang bida ng Pasko”. The term ‘Bro’ was derived from its top-rating primetime drama entitled ‘May Bukas Pa’. Its character, Santino uses the term ‘Bro’ not as a short term of brother but to identify God or Jesus. So the tagline literally means God is the star of Christmas. But the usage of ‘Bro’ tends to be misleading.

My rating? A passing 6 over 10. No thumb up this time.

I’m not a fan of any GMA productions. But upon seeing their station ID, I was impressed to know that the station decided not to bank on their stars. Instead, they use ordinary people who conveyed the message “Sama-sama tayong magpasalove ngayong Pasko”. This is a unique formula for a station ID but it worked for the advantage of the station. Newspaper columnists and internet critics praised the network for its good move.

Although GMA won on its unique concept, unlike ABS-CBN the downfall of the station ID is its song. Unlike ABS-CBN its song wasn’t catchy enough to capture viewers’ attention. I actually got jaded watching the duration of the video because of the song. Good videos should be paired with good songs, but this one failed because the music did not leveled-up with the video.

This time I’ll grade the two elements, video and music, separately.

Music: 4 out of 10

So the big question of the Christmas season is this: What Christmas station ID appealed to you?

The Anak TV Seal Award is being awarded by the Southeast Asian Foundation for Children and Television for all the kid-friendly TV personalities and programs which are best examples for the viewing children.

i was watching snn last night and kristeta did it again, her signature taklesa, live TV moment and she can be very harsh ha! the not-so-lady kris was holding her award when boy asked if he can have a hand on the trophy. i think boy was saying about wanting to have his own anak tv award someday, and the not-so-lady kristeta just blurted that he cant have an anak tv trophy unless he marries and have kids.

what? and she was the most casual to say that to boy?

and the poor boy was composed and kept his discomfort on live TV. well for boy, you are more accomplished than any straight males who are married and with kids in this third world country. you are more inspiring than those straight females who got pregnant out of wedlock… way more inspiring than those straight females who acquired STD and cried on TV.

on the last gap, boy recognized that it was a “joke” but of course, he was just being proper. hello!

I don’t always watch Lovers in Paris since I’m not exactly a big fan of Kristina Cassandra’s acting.  But I like Zanjoe Marudo (kahit ano pang sabihin ninyo) and because I’m addicted to Dahil May Isang Ikaw, I watch LIP on a semi-regular basis while waiting for DMII.

Last December 7, I tuned in and caught the scene where Maricar Reyes (Karen) wakes up to find herself in a hospital and paralyzed from the waist down.   Oh my gad, she’s a very good actress ha, promise!  Watch this clip and see for yourself.

In other news, I think everyone saw Pinoy Big Brother’s Melason loveteam yesterday.  My teenage niece was jumping and screaming while watching.  I kept getting calls and text messages from friends who were so kilig/natatawa at the very cute love story of Melissa and Jason.

San bang galing probinsiya si Jason? Batangas ba? I think plus pogi points ‘yung malambing niyang punto.

I also admire Jason for his honesty, especially when he said that though he likes Melai/Isay/Melissa (ano ba talaga ang nickname niya?), he wants to make sure that he’d still feel the same way once they’re outside the PBB house.  I say that’s very wise and very honest, di ba?

Ang kaso lang, once they’re out of the house and he finds out that his feelings for Melissa aren’t very true, mukhang mawawalan ng career itong si Jason.

In other news ulit, MARTIAL LAW PA RIN NGA PALA SA MAGUINDANAO.  Ano’ng masasabi ninyo?

This serves as a statement that no matter how bad the light pollution in my area, I will still continue observing the night sky.

In another first on Philippine television, eight presidential candidates will be facing off in a forum and before a live audience on Wednesday, Dec. 2, at the UST Medicine auditorium in Manila.

Harapan: The ANC Presidential Forum will bring together former President Joseph Estrada, Senators Noynoy Aquino, Richard Gordon, and Manuel Villar, ex-Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro,  evangelist Bro. Eddie Villanueva, former Angeles City councilor JC De Los Reyes, and environmentalist Nicanor Perlas.

1:12 am and I’m still up! I’m chatting with Kpop-addict friend (let’s now call her Kimmy) on YM. We’ve been chatting for like 2 hours! She “PM”-ed me on Facebook about 2 hours ago. She asked for my cellphone number so she could text me about Kpop updates (this girl is an addict, you know). Then she told me a story on how she met Kim Bum!

She said that when she heard that Kim Bum was coming to the Philippines, she got so hyped up that she immediately called her uncle who was friends with the president of RC Cola, the product that would be endorsed by Kim Bum. She asked for the president’s number and dialled it as soon as her uncle hung up. She was able to talk with the president; however, the president said he didn’t handle Kim Bum’s schedule, and that it would be better if she would just contact ABS-CBN since they were going to interview Kim Bum in one of their programs.

So Kimmy called up her friend, Sara, who had some friends working in ABS-CBN. Kimmy contacted one of them and found out that Kim Bum would be guesting at “Entertainment Live.” Bad news was that Sara’s friend was working in the news department and not in the entertainment department. Good news was that despite all that, Kimmy never lost hope. Moments later, while desperately thinking of how she could meet Kim Bum, Kimmy heard her phone ringing. Her uncle, who was a friend of RC Cola’s president, was calling her! He told her to meet him at Gerry’s Grill just in-front of the ABS-CBN complex! Kimmy was so excited, she called up her friend Carly, and together they went to Gerry’s Grill just as her uncle had said.

There outside Gerry’s Grill was the van of Valerie Concepcion (host of “Wowowee”), and Kimmy’s uncle was waving at them to get inside! He even introduced them to Director Bubut Mortiz! By riding Valerie Concepcion’s van, Kimmy and Carly were able to enter the ABS-CBN compound and watch “Wowowee.” (Kimmy even showed me the album while telling this. She’s got a lot of pictures of Willie Revillame and Pokwang!)

After “Wowowee,” Kimmy and Carly got out of the studio along with the myriads of people who had just watched the show. The two of them tried to get into the studio of “Entertainment Live” next but the crew wouldn’t let them. So Kimmy and Carly stayed outside at the parking lot, waiting, hoping. Minutes later, a huge van stopped just a few meters away. Coming out of the van were a lot of what looked like personal bodyguards. They opened one of the van doors and let someone out. Then they walked toward the gate, toward the studio, toward them! In the middle of this troop of bodyguards was a small familiar figure which was no other than Kim Bum!!! Kimmy was like “OMG!!! This is just unbelievable!!!”

Kim Bum passed by them and entered the gates, still accompanied by his battalion of bodyguards, while Kimmy and Carly were left outside. Nonetheless, it seemed that Kimmy was lucky after all because at that moment Director Bubut saw them from the gates and immediately let them in. So in the end they were still able to watch “Entertainment Live” and catch the whole interview of Kim Bum! Moreover, Kimmy was able to take a lot of pictures of her ultimate crush, even though it was prohibited.

After narrating her obviously long story, Kimmy asked for my YM ID. I logged in on YM and now we’re still talking about Kpop, Korean dramas, SuJu, Kyuhyun, Donghae, and all her celebrity addictions, even Michael Jackson! We even talked about her ex-boyfriend and how her wide collection of Korean dramas helped her get through her depression.

It feels good. I genuinely feel happy right now that someone who I was not so close with at school is opening up herself to a complete stranger like me, telling stories about herself, her passions, and her struggles with her friends. During this conversation, I learned a lot of things about Kimmy. Gosh, she really did have a lot of crushes at school! I feel happy that somehow we managed to connect to each other through what seems like a very petty thing like our love for Kpop. I’m glad that I found someone who shares the same “likes” as I do. I’m so happy to have this Kpop-addict friend. So glad to have Kimmy.

Back when I was young, whenever I hear news like this, I feel that our policemen are doing a great job and I felt safe. The opposite is now true in my late twenties. Ever since the infamous Kuratong-Baleleng rubout case back in the early 90s, I have had doubts whenever an entire criminal group is killed in a supposed shootout.

Well now we have a report from ABS-CBN News that I find disturbing. It may be that the reporter got the message wrong. Click here for the actual article.

The part that got me disturbed is this:

“Maaring marami nang alam ito kaya pinatay na nila. Sindikato ito ng carnapping,” Mendoza told ABS-CBN News.

Superintendent Chris Mendoza is the Quezon City Police District Station 6 commander. A rough translation of what he said is “It could be that they know a lot that is why they killed them. This is a carnapping syndicate”.

Hmm, the police killed the suspected car-nappers because THEY KNOW TOO MUCH? Please explain why they decided to kill them because they know too much? If it was really a true shootout, then why did Superintendent Mendoza have to mention that they know too much that’s why the cops killed them?

She’s a Filipina comedian and host of noon time show Wowowee, known for her outrageous costumes

I purchased a few of her gowns at The World Bazaar Festival at World Trade Center. I can’t believe her costumes actually look really pretty and not to forget, are all designed by famous Filipino Fahion Designers Bing Cristobal and Puey Quinones. Theyre so cute and really well-made I bought 3 gowns and have no idea when and where I will be using them. I regret not bringing enough cash. I wanted to hoard her booth.

BTW, she is freakin thin! most of her gowns are super form tight, the no-more-space-for-dinner type.

Her gowns are all less than 1k, all with designer labels and are all one of a kind.

One thing about bazaars is that you could always find something rare that you’d never see in malls. But this i think was just too much.

It’s been days since she returned from New York, but Angel Locsin still can’t believe that she took part in the 37th International Emmy Awards as one of the nominees for Best Foreign Actress. But aside from her much-talked-about red carpet experience, the 23-year-old also fielded offers to do projects from several foreign production outfits. “May mga nagbigay ng calling cards e. Meron pang gustong makipag-co-produce sa ABS-CBN. Pero ayoko munang magsalita tungkol dun, ayokong pangunahan. Darating kung darating. Para sa akin yung experience lang talaga na ma-nominate is already something I can really be proud of. Okay na ako dun. Ayokong mag-expect ng higit pa dun,” she said in an interview with ABS-CBN reporters last Monday, November 30.
While Angel was grateful that her dramatic portrayal in Lobo got her to the Emmys, she admitted she would have enjoyed the trip more if her former leading man Piolo Pascual could have been there. She invited him to be her escort for the said event but unfortunately, the ultimate heartthrob was busy with his other work commitments. “Tinext ko siya kasi siya naman yung kasama ko sa Lobo, yung kasama sa hirap, sa puyat… And hindi ko naman maa-achieve yun kung wala din yung support niya. So tinanong ko kung gusto niyang sumama. Sabi naman niya gusto kaya lang medyo nagra-rush sila sa Lovers in Paris. Okay lang naman sa akin.Kinongratulate naman niya ako tapos nagpadala siya ng flowers,” she related.
With her latest achievement, Angel she has been getting even more accolades from her colleagues in the industry, particularly from John Lloyd Cruz who said that with or without an Emmy Award, he’s still proud of Angel’s talent as an actress. “Natense naman ako dun. Eto binabawian lang ako ni Lloydy dahil lagi kong sinasabi na fan ako ni Lloydy lalo na pagdating sa dedication niya sa craft niya. Wala ako masabi. Natawa na lang talaga ako. Salamat Lloydy,” she shyly remarked.
Angel further shared that her upcoming soap with John Lloyd is still in the planning stage because they want to make sure that they will be able to meet viewers’ expectations about their team-up. “Kasi yung kay Lloydy dahil masyado nga siyang pinaghahandaan and all. Inaayos yung story so right after Kokey namin siguro uumpisahan. Super natuwa ako lalo na nung narinig ko yung konsepto. Sana matuloy talaga siya. Kasi nung nalaman ko yung story tumayo yung balahibo ko e. Kaya lang hindi pa ko pwedeng mag-elaborate tungkol dun.”
When told that the multitalented actor is already looking forward to their first show together, she was quick to say that she also feels the same way. “Naku may time pa nga yung mang-asar nung first time naming nagkasama sa shoot ng ABS-CBN Christmas Station ID. As for her other projects, there has been talk that Eric Quizon wants Angel to play Alma Moreno in a planned biopic of his father Dolphy. Though she was clearly surprised by that piece of news, the young actress said that she’s willing to do the part if given the chance. “Wow. Talaga? Ngayon ko lang narinig ito ha. Sana matuloy kasi unang-una si Tito Dolphy ‘yan tapos si Direk Eric ilang taon ko nakatrabaho ‘yan. Yung thought lang na magampanan ko yung pinili niyang role para sa akin, exciting talaga. Sana matuloy at sana magampanan ko ng maayos.”

I am always amused with the constant battle between the Philippines’ two biggest TV networks – ABS-CBN and GMA-7. The competition even stretches to the production of their respective Christmas station IDs.

While ABS-CBN focused on all its contract stars appearing in the same while singing their theme of “Bro, Ikaw Ang Star ng Pasko” (Bro, You are the Star of Christmas) with each one holding a star, GMA-7 signed up unknowns to present a more dramatic unfolding of events that lead to the celebration of Christmas with the concept “Sama-Sama Tayong Mag-PasaLOVE Ngayong Pasko” (Together, Let’s Pass the Love This Christmas). Honestly, the ABS-CBN ID is more joyous and literally star-filled, but the GMA-7 production is clearly more heart-tugging and realistic in keeping up with the recent calamities that the country experienced.

I actually enjoy watching both so instead of taking sides, let’s just take each day of December with the optimism that comes with the season’s festive and love-filled spirit as shown by both station IDs.
