Many Thai J-Rock fans blamed Thai artists that they copied Japanese songs. In fact, they should believe in ability of Thai people, or say just, coincident or Japanese artists copy Thai things. Although one case is true, that does not mean other million cases have to be just like the first one.

One of my friend that I met when I just had been a J-Rock fan, always told me that a Thai band called, Giwa copies his beloved Luna Sea. I was so young, and I did believe him. I believe many things flood around world wide web. Thai J-Rock fans keep post this kind of thing up. They matched short parts of some Japanese songs and Thai songs, and they said that Thai artist copies Japanese artists. Most of the parts they matched are less than 10 seconds, and it is very easy that musicians can think about the same thing. It is coincident rather that coping.

Thai people are not stupid, because they can own many copyrights they make by themselves. Thai people can work so well if a reward/award is waiting for them, such as world robot competition, or sport tournament. Naturally, Thai people do not like to step up without motivation. Thai musicians have a lot of motivation, especially pop-rock artists after 2000. Pop-Rock in Thailand have been popular again after 20-30 years. Between 2 eras, Thai people consumed much of sweet-pop songs. Many bands was founded in late 10 years, and many old bands did re-union. The boys want to be cool, especially for the sight of girls. They created a unique style of Thai Pop-Rock. Many songs may sound similar, because those kids grew up with pop songs. Some people are different, because they listen to other things, such as Thai country songs and other foreigners’ things.

I am the one who really like Thai country songs. If we do not count the style of voice and Thai instrument, many fast songs can be popular in Alternative-Rock/Pop world. Both sound very similar. Many Thai people also listen to Rock n’ Roll artist from the United States and Europe. They get the influence directly from the original rock bands, and they do not need to past J-Rock artist. Some Thai people also listen to J-Rock and do cover, but there is less percent.

Clash is another band that Thai J-Rock fans blames that they mimic “Forever Love” of X Japan in their song called, “Nangfa Naijai” (Angle in Mind). I do know both songs so well, and I cannot find that Clash really copies that songs. They are same type of music, but not the same song. Although Clash did cover of L’Arc~en~Ciel, it does not mean that they do not have brain to compose their own music. I am a Punk fan, and many Punk songs are similar. Let’s listen to sample of DecayDance things. They are similar and they are good!

Another important conflict is the song call, “Ter Mai Kir Tai” (You Have Never Died) of a Thai band called, Two (they have 2 members.). My parent keeps that albums, too. The famous guy named, Tong. He helped around many projects. Thai people know that he is really nice. Right now he is older, but he just looks the same. I do not know if this nice guy hears what some people are railing him. I pass around the websites, many Thai X Japan fans railed “Two”. Unbelievable, I saw a guy wrote, “Two-Kuy”. “Kuy” (ควย) is the rudest word in Thai Language. He blamed Thai artists who did not know what X Japan was about. The company always manages things for pop artists, and the only thing that the pop artists need to have is the great performance.

I did look through the track list of that album of “Two”, and style of X Japan songs. (It is 2 years, I was their fan, my early high school.) The melody is weird for Japanese songs, but the song composer is weird in “Two” albums. I could not say, but the news already said that. They said, Thai company has to pay for Yoshiki. I do not want to believe. It is just the late visits of Yoshiki in Thailand. So,… My early high school time, a senior guy who was a friend of “Yai” (Yai was known as a big fan of X Japan in our school.) told me about this conflict. “Two did release “Ter Mai Kir Tai” before X Japan release Say Anything”. If I can go back to that moment, I will never show the goat hand to him. I did,.., I did that hand. He ran behind me and tried to kill me. Where was my soul of Thai person? I had had it when I was a boy scout. I did respect King Rama VI. I love his firmly goal to make Thai people to love each other as one big family.

The news was unbelievable for many people. That song sound quite like Thai songs, and the lyrics can fit in so well. No matter what the reality is, but if there is no that song, many Thai people will never be fans of X Japan.

There is another conflict of Neo Universe of L’Arc en Ciel, but that is a little thing. I think it is coincident, because it is just a small part of the song. Most of Thai L’Arc en Ciel fans are still young and rich, and they do not really care to talk about the past, because they look up the new stuff, and they talked a lot. I have many friends who like this band, that is why I can say. Like, once I met Kaun with her L’Arc book in a school bus, and we just began to talk although we had never known each other. We talked a lot. It is familiar in American people, but unusual for Thai people. (I am smiling.)

The main thing I would like to say is, Thai people always look down themselves. Many foreign songs were composed after Thai songs. Whenever they sounds the same, Thai people will say that Thai copied those foreigners.

There are other cases, such as Peace Maker’s songs and Josh Groban’s, and also the hair style and dress style of Thai teenager. Although the idea cannot be Copyrights, people keeps railing that style of dressing is wrong things. This may be only one attitude in a corner of Thailand, because most people do not care (me, too). They dress up and they want to be cool.

Let’s see the side of Thailand. What the songs that Thai artists composed before the foreigner and they sound the same! I am an audience and also an artist, and I will never say that they mimic each other. Many people can think about the same thing. The one part of melody or similar style cannot prove that that artist is the copier.

First time A7X came into the music industrial, they were considered as a metal band, but now, they are considered as a punk band. Every Japanese fan of Zi:Kill know that Zi:Kill is punk. Paradox is so great at their show. Almost all songs of Paradox sound more modern than Hide’s. Paradox tend to be Alternative Rock, which is really popular in Western world such the United States and the United Kingdom. Hide is more into underground alternative rock, which can be found in both LA and NY. Although Hide did a lot of underground style, those songs are not popular. Hide’s songs which are popular are something modern; such as In Motion, Tell Me, Lemoned I Scream, Ever Free, Post and Honey Blade.

Rong Rean Kong Nu is so classic, too. This song is very old, but still catching people’s hearts. If you know Thai language, you will cry since the first time you listen to it. It is strange that The Academy is… has the same stuff. The world is so coincident. I played Rong Rean Kong Nu on Harmonica, too. This song is about children who have a hard time to get to school. They lived on the mountain and their school is really faraway. They have to walk step by step. They love to go to school. This song reflect the city society that many children do not like the go to school, although they are so rich and very easy to go to school.

Your favorite artist does not have to be the first one who create the things. We should be very happy that someone thinks the same as our favorite artists. And now, we start to listen to the new things!! Our world is not just a box that other people cannot touch. We will never look down other people just because we want to praise our heroes.

Saranno Giuliano Rassu, Marco Mengoni e le Yavanna a giocarsi la vittoria ad X Factor 3 ed il posto a Sanremo. Esce Silvio Barbieri da Treviglio detto Silver, 24 anni, dopo aver dimenticato per due settimane di fila il testo delle canzoni e dopo che gli hanno dato da cantare un inedito scialbo anzi che no (si veda sotto). Morgan batte Sony 2-0: ha demolito i pezzi inediti assegnati dallo staff (stavolta i capitani non c’entrano, nella scelta) ai suoi due cantanti ed ha pienamente ragione, sotto ne spieghiamo il perchè.

Si è lamentato che non lo fanno intervenire sugli inediti, gli rispondono che quando l’ha fatto (nella prima edizione) venne fuori l’allucinante “Chi” degli Aram Quartet, comunque vincitori.  Di sicuro, hanno dato il pezzo più debole al cantante più debole. Che infatti è uscito. Hanno dato il pezzo migliore all’unico avversario di Marco, che comunque vincerà perchè basta la sua voce. Probabile podio di consolazione alle Yavanna, con un pezzo medio con assonanze già note. Facciamo una scommessa? Nessuno di questi pezzi sfonderà. “Impossibile” di Becucci dell’anno scorso è una spanna e mezzo sopra tutti, per dire.

Passiamo  alle esecuzioni delle cover della semifinale. Tutti pezzi di alto livello, con Mara Maionchi che ha sparato altissimo assegnando addirittura Enya. Morgan punta su AC/DC e Velvet Underground. Più scontate le scelte di Claudia Mori. Cliccando sui titoli trovate gli originali dei pezzi meno noti (o meglio, di quelli i quali i titoli non vi dicono nulla, ma se ci cliccate su scoprirete che i pezzi li conoscete, eccome!).

YAVANNA (“Orinoco flow” di Enya e “Meravigliosa creatura” di Gianna Nannini poi La Vie en Rose di Edith Piaf/Grance Jones) – Su pezzi “pop” continuano a non convincerci più di tanto – il riferimento è al brano della Nannini – e questo, dovendo qui scegliere un artista pop non va a loro vantaggio (insomma: voi comprereste un loro disco? Io non so). Ma rispetto a Silver sono due spanne migliori vocalmente. Su Enya benissimo, il loro mondo è quello. Parecchio sofisticato ma di atmosfera (ma l’esecuzione solo voce e pianoforte su questo pezzo è come l’acqua minerale aperta dopo tre giorni). Velo pietoso sul completino a scacchi (calze comprese) delle tre figliole. Ottime al ballotaggio sul già sentito pezzo della Piaf in doppia versione. Le salva la Mori, giustamente.

GIULIANO RASSU (“Stand by me” di Ben E.King e “Quando” di Pino Daniele) - Dritto come un fuso a centropalco, come i cantanti degli anni’60. No, no, non va. Non diciamo che si debba agitare, ma almeno non stare li fermo. Il resto è nella norma. “Stand by me” è il suo pane e si sente. Sul pezzo di Pino Daniele fa 20 passi (record!). L’interpretazione di  “Quando” è ottima,  ma non ci emoziona, non lo ha mai fatto da quando è entrato. Con lui la Mori non ha mai rischiato, le piace vincere facile.E infatti va in finale (e rischia pure di insidiare Marco).

MARCO MENGONI (“Back in black” degli AC/DC e “Il cielo in una stanza” di Gino Paoli) - La solita macchina da musica. Divora tutto quello che gli danno, compreso l’heavy metal e lo ripropone con classe e stile (però va meglio su altre cose). L’arrangiamento vagamente jazzato su “Senza fine”, assegnato in corsa al posto del pezzo di Morgan è notevolissimo, sull’esecuzione ormai non c’è più nulla da dire. Presenza scenica superba. Se non vince X Factor è un delitto. Mostro assoluto. Va in finale. E tiferemo per lui.

SILVER (“Sunday morning” dei Velvet Underground e “Un piccolo aiuto” di Zucchero poi “Un’avventura” di Lucio Battisti) – Poco convicente vocalmente sul pezzo dei Velvet Underground, anche se la sua presenza scenica lo aiuta molto. Sul pezzo di Zucchero per una volta diamo ragione alla Mori, ci ha fatto sentire il timbro di voce, l’esecuzione solo col piano lo aiuta. Sicuramente è il più pop per gli standard moderni del termine, ma non è detto che sia del tutto una cosa positiva. Al ballottaggio si dimentica di nuovo le canzoni. Arrivederci, è stato un piacere.

INEDITI

YAVANNA – Una donna migliore (Anita Racca – Gaudi-Maiello)- Il problema è che l’inciso è esattamente una strofa di “Ricominciamo” di Adriano Pappalardo, anno 1979, precisamente il punto che dice “So come passi le notti è un tuo diritto io guardo e sto zitto ma penso di tutto”. No, Mara Maionchi, non sono armonie simili, in quel punto sembra proprio lo stesso pezzo! (questo non vuol dire che sia un plagio, l’abbiamo detto più volte, è solo la constatazione di una somiglianza nella melodia). Grandissimo arrangiamento, bella interpretazione. Nota bene: musica di Tony Maiello, quarto a X Factor prima edizione, prodotto da Mara Maionchi.  Allegria. Anita Racca è la mora delle Yavanna.

GIULIANO RASSU – Ruvido (Rassu-Calvetti-Zanotti) – Il pezzo che probabilmente lo manderà a giocarsi la vittoria finale con Marco, in maniera totalmente immeritata per il cammino percorso ma  guadagnata sul campo con questa esecuzione che spazza via tutto quello che si è detto di lui. Si agita per bene sul palco, come non aveva fatto mai e ci mette grinta. Il pezzo lo sente suo, è un  bel soul pop, parecchio radiofonico, coinvolgente. Entra nelle orecchie al primo ascolto e questo conta molto.

MARCO MENGONI – Dove si vola.- Scopriamo che questo era l’inedito che doveva essere di Chiara. E te credo. E’ senz’altro più adatto a lei che a lui che però come dice Morgan è talmente bravo che dà sapore anche all’elenco del telefono. Come Chiara. Che su questo pezzo avrebbe sfondato di sicuro. Su Marco è un pezzo carino, gradevole, parecchio radiofonico, ma niente che valorizzi le sue immense doti vocali. Si poteva fare immensamente meglio, invece gli stanno preparando la strada per Sanremo. Perchè vincerà lui X Factor e a Sanremo gli daranno una cosa così.  Elio, quarto giudice, travestito da Village People ha detto una cosa giusta: se Marco  lavora bene sulla sua voce può diventare il Mika italiano.

SILVER – Fuori c’è il sole (Barbieri- Cecere) – Quando l’artista stesso ti dice in diretta, dopo averlo cantato, che sto pezzo non gli piace, qualche dubbio dovrebbe venire. O no? Per carità, è una canzoncina leggera, anche carina in fondo. Però se questo deve essere il singolo d’esordio, francamente è imbarazzante. Andava bene come traccia 7 dell’album.  Anche perchè poi sembrava di vedere Gianni Morandi prima maniera. Si fischietta, ma è poco dirompente.  Lui già non ha una gran voce, se lo azzeri con un pezzo così fiacco in partenza, è finita. Il testo è sui livelli dell’inedito di Yuri l’anno scorso, lascia parecchio a desiderare. Cade dal palco come Jovanotti a Sanremo, comunque vada è di buon auspicio per la carriera…

A few months ago, I read the ultimate graphic novel, Alan Moore’s Watchmen. It is indeed an amazingly good book. I don’t normally cross over other media into this music based blog, but Watchmen is a story I read and can see it cinematically as well as imagining a great soundtrack to accompany it. I’ve seen the film yet, read first though as I thought it would be sacrilege to see it before i had read the novel. Although good, I have to admit that I was disappointed by it as a whole. It misses out major parts of the novel, but it is visually an impressive like-for-like copy. I even wrote notation on what i liked and what I didn’t, the dislikes out weigh the likes by a strong margin.

The soundtrack though, was one of the best things about the film, it had some inspired choices, including Hendrix. But, here is an alternative soundtrack formed from ideas when I first read the novel. I’ve compiled a short playlist to go with each of the 12 chapters of Watchmen.

Vin sarbatorile…vin sarbatorile…e ziua satului Ciuca Macaii, e sarbatoarea lor. Marioara nu a lipsit niciodata la un asemenea eveniment. Nici acum domnisoara cu iz de Berceni si dorinte de Dorobanti nu va lipsi. La insistentele mamei, Geta si ale tatalui Banel, studenta la litere va veni in week-end pentru a sarbatori in mod traditional. Bineinteles ca nu se poate intoarce in sat cu hainele pe care le purta atunci cand era eleva la Liceul Agricol “Marian Van Ghel”. Atunci purta puloverul de lana pe care il purtase si bunica la caminul cultural, dar si blugii tatalui, moda AC DC. De atunci au trecut 7 ani si fetita noastra a dat de bani. Pentru ca a lucrat la firma Guma, Marioara a pus un ban deoparte si isi permite sa se afiseze la sarbatoare cu tinuta de la magazinul Tara Fashion.

La sezatoarea din sat va soca pe toata lumea cu tinuta ei. Va alege ceva special, ceva cu care sa il faca gelos pe Gigel. Va putea face poze cu telefonul ei Mototolea pe care sa le uplodeze pe haicinci, feisbuc si pe maispeis. Sa vezi atunci cum se va trezi Gigelozia. Vorba cantecului, “Gigelozia salveaza Romania!”

Drumul de aproape 4 ore a fost un calvar pentru studenta la litere. Pentru ca nu a putut rezista tentatiei de a-si etala in metrou noile tinute, Marioara a fost nevoita sa suporte comentariile de tip gigelian.

“Bai, ce fetita dulce. Oare e cazuta din cer”?

“Draguto ai o busola? Ca m-am pierdut in ochii tai!”

“Nu sunt beat, ci doar m-ai ametit tu.”

“Ai un pansament? M-am lovit la cap cand te-am vazut!”

Comentariile din microbuz nu le mai reproduc aici pentru ca o sa ma cenzureze PC News, dar si pentru ca am respect pentru domnisoarele si doamnele care citesc acest articol. Totusi izul de salam, comentariile jignitoare ce insoteau fiecare groapa intalnita plus manelele din difuzorul casetofonului dau un tablou complet al drumului catre Ciuca Macaii. Tinuta aleasa din catalogul online, Tara, a venit pe fondul unei navigari excesive in internet.

Marioara, deja o internauta, citise pe blog-ul Roxanei de la Tara Fashion despre Eterna Rochie Neagra.

Se apropie weekendul si deja ne simtim mai bine si rasuflam usurati ca a mai trecut o saptamina.Depinde cum a trecut si daca am trait intens fiecare clipa si ne-am bucurat de ea.
Ca de obicei va invit la o cafea sa admiram impreuna o rochie neagra simpla,eleganta si distinsa.Astept si parerile voastre.

Cu lacrimi in ochi, facand parca si monitorul de ultima generatie sa planga, Marioara si-a achizitionat minunata rochie. Blog-ul e ceva cool, probabil ca avea si ea unul intr-o buna zi. Va scrie versurile ei facute doar sa rimeze pentru Gigel, va scrie despre vizita ei la shopping prin Viena (normal ca magazinele sunt singura atractie pentru fata noastra). Cu toate ca rochia e de seara , Marioara alege sa o poarte in microbuz. Oricum va circula dupa ora 18, si atunci este seara.

Alt motiv pentru care alege Tara este perioada asta de reduceri…Orice domnita venita la oras umbla dupa reduceri nopti intregi, zile intregi, luni intregi, sa nu mai zicem ca marioarelor le sta gandul la reduceri toata viata.

Pentru marele concert, Marioara alege din colectia de toamna 2009,  fusta fantezie. In liceu, avea un iubit pe care toti il numeau Bruzli. Baietul acesta avea tot felul de fantezii cu Marioara: sa o vada cum plimba caprele, sa o vada culegand porumbul, sa se plimbe amandoi de manuta prin papusoi, sa vada un film indian la el in bordei. Asa ca fusta cu pricina trezise in Marioara un sentiment de nostalgie. Oare concertul ii va apropia pe cei doi ca acum 7 ani?

Ajunsa in sat, Marioara coboara din microbuz. Nu se uita pe jos, pentru ca aerul de Bucuresti este inalt. De aceea, fetita de Berceni cu origini macaiene atinge performanta de a calca intr-o bucurie lasata de un cal naravas pe ulita principala…cizmele sunt compromise…Marioara plange pentru a nu stiu cata oara in mod sincer. Insa de vina nu mai este Gigel, ci satul ei natal cu cine nu l-a asfaltat…Se spala, dar pana la concert nu mai este decat o ora…Plansul in familia Mutu e ceva transmisibil, mai ceva decat gripa porcina, asa ca Geta Mutu, cat si Banel Mutu insotesc bocetul odraslei.

Pentru ca ziua sa se termine prost, Bruzli merge la concert cu Vasilica sanatoasa satului, noua lui cucerire.Marioara incepe sa regrete venirea in Ciuca Macaii.

Insa asta nu e tot… Dreampoet, organizator al acestui eveniment a profitat de zilele libere sa o viziteze pe Marioara chiar la ea acasa. Imbracat in costumul Tara,  cumparat la pret promotional, poetul din Berceni anunta de pe scena: ” In aceasta seara, pentru dumneavoastra trupa AC DC…Sponsori ai evenimentului Tara si Gigel Spuma SA “.

Deznodamant: Marioara plange si acum, la ora 1:33, cand scriu articolul. Dreampoet fredoneaza piese precum “Thunderstruck” sau “Highway to Hell“. Gigel e iarasi patron, iar familia Mutu e fericita ca si-a vazut  odorul.Banel Mutu, rocker in tinerete simte vibratia muzicii… In incheiere, cu plecaciuni, trupa AC DC.

Ce n-a vazut Bucurestiul, vede Ciuca Macaii…

Wow!!! como explicarlo que pase estubo buenisismo. si el de Metallica en mi escala del 1 al 10 se llevo un 9.5 este se llevo un 9, primero el esenario estaba super al empesar el concierto pusieron una animacion de Angus Young como diablo subido en un tren derepente el tren se estrella y sale en el esenario un tren!!!!! si un tren en medio del escenario, luego cuando hell bells hiva a empesar baja una campanota y Brian Johnson agarra un laso que sale del badajo y tal cuasimodo se balansea en el, y tambien sacaron a una mona enorme inflave que se paresia a sabria, ya saben esa sabrina que tiene mucha chi…busto las pantallas estaban muy bien utilisadas de vez en vez pasanban unas animaciones fotos del pasado, al publico que hasta binos a una chica enseñando sus bibis y asi mas cosas y claro los fuegos artificiales no podian faltar. Las rolas ahi les va mas o menos el orden:  ’Rock & Roll Train’, ‘Hell ain’t a bad place to be’, ‘Back in Black’(si prendio no tanto como yo esperaba), ‘Big Jack’, ‘Dirty deeds done dirt cheap’, ‘Thunderstruck’, ‘Shot down in flames’, ‘Black Ice’, ‘The Jack’(en esta rola Angus se denudo y enseño los calzones que decian ac/dc), ‘Hells Bells’, ‘Shoot to Thrill’, ‘Dog eat dog’, ‘You Shook me all night long’( que por cierto es mi favorita estubo muy buena y la gente claro que se animo), ‘TNT’, ’Whole Lotta Rosie’, ‘let there be rock’, ‘highway to hell’(prendio muy cañon) y cerraron con ‘those about to rock’ y se fueron, despuesito de que salieron lansaron fuegos artificiales. Lo mejor de la noche fue cuando angus se echo un solo como de 15min. y vaya quue nos tenia a todos cayados y mirandolo y con la voca abierta ya se ve un poco viejo pero ya quisieran muchos tocar la lira asi como el toca su inseparable Gibson SG, muy buen concierto aqui les dejo unas fotiyos.

Black Ice é o 15º álbum de estúdio da banda de Hard Rock Australiana AC/DC, produzido por Brendan O’Brien e lançado entre os dias de 17 e 22 de outubro de 2008. O AC/DC começou a trabalhar com o novo álbum em janeiro de 2006, o trabalho com o novo álbum foi adiado devido a uma lesão com baixista Cliff Williams e também devido a troca de gravadoras da Columbia Records para a Sony Music. Até hoje, o álbum já vendeu mais de 6,5 milhões de cópias.

O álbum foi gravado no The Warehouse Studio em Vancouver, Canadá, o mesmo estúdio em que foi gravado seu álbum anterior Stiff Upper Lip. La “falsa notizia” è stata ripresa anche da molti siti web che hanno addirittura iniziato a parlare di possibili date di inizio prevendita: tutto smentito!

Kang Media has very recently uploaded an unreleased mix by none other than Twissler Wino called “The Journey of Clayton Magnet Downtown Brocket Mix” on YouTube. Apparently it shows a North Korean Soldier, who looks an awful like Charles Kang(Kang Chul-Su) ordering the viewer to make a Video for this audio track and upload it to YouTube. This is the first time North Korean elements have been brought into the Brocket 99 universe, so this should prove quite interesting. John Smith: I’m a researcher for T.A.R.R., my name is John W.
Smith. I’ll be interviewing an elderly gentleman here at
Brocket, Alberta. The date is March the seventh. This
interview will relate as to the time before the signing of the
treaties. The purpose of the interview is to try and cover all
possible areas where the leaders might have knowledge. It is
possible that the questions that will be asked of the
interviewee might not be able to give any information in answer
to any of them. In fact in most cases interviewees will not be
able to do so. This is expected and they should not feel that
the interviewer is trying to make them look stupid or ignorant.
The unfortunate fact is that most of this information has
probably been lost from the oral tradition. It would be a
shame, however, to lose any that might still be in someone’s
mind simply because no one ever asked the question. I will
start off by asking my grandfather his name, his age and where
he was born. The date today is March the seventh, 1975. What
is your name?
Tom: Tom Yellowhorn.
John: How old are you?
Tom: Well, I was seventy-two last birthday, November 24, 1974.
John: Where were you born?
Tom: Well, on the reserve.
John: On the Peigan reserve?
Tom: Yeah, Peigan reserve. And I think that’s the old
settlement we had across the river, which I still got myself
today.
John: Have you always lived here?
Tom: Oh yes, I have been here all my life.
John: Could you tell me the story about the time there was
buffalo around?
Tom: Well, I can tell you very little, Johnny, because on my
life line I was brought up, my father was a halfbreed. My
grandmother married a white man in the first place, so my dad
was a halfbreed and my mother was a full-blooded Indian, her
father’s and her name was Fox Herd, and he was from this
Blackfoot tribe in Montana. That’s where originally my
grandfather was from. Then this white man grandfather of mine
was, I think of many trades because he was up in North
Battleford when the treaty was made up there, because he went
there with my grandmother and then they brought three wagon
loads of good, mixed goods. Oh, everything for a household you
know, and he traded with the Indians up there. But on the other
side, my mother’s father, he was on this Yellowstone Park area
in Montana and he was a great hunter too. He was one of the
great parties that go out hunting buffalo for their livelihood
and I guess he was one of those that were raiding the
neighboring Indians in Missouri, further south, I guess Crows
and Cheyennes, and so forth like that. So they lived quite
entirely on buffalo, wild game, wildlife. They lived on that
for their livelihood. And they lived along this eastern slopes
of the Rockies all this time. And there was buffalo everywhere
until…well I think that the buffalo went, disappeared, it
seems to me disappeared before the first treaty was
signed…because, according to what I hear they had a mass
killing of buffalo in the States. And it was staged by the
American government. And I hear about the same time the
buffalo was killed off on the Canadian territory too. So I
think the two governments must have made some kind of agreement
to kill the buffalo off, because that was the Canadians’ main
source of living of life, because they used the buffalo for
everything. So when they made the treaties, well they told the
Indians, chiefs where they’re gonna stay, where they’re going to
live. But the treaty at Blackfoot Crossing, Cluny, well they
asked Chief Crowfoot where he was going to live. So he chose
Blackfoot Crossing and so this Blackfoot Crossing, I don’t know
how far it runs south and west, and the north and east, but
they had a big piece of territory for their own and when
Red Crow chose his, where he’s going to stay, he chose the Belly
Hills. Well the Belly Hills has got a river running on each,
started from way up west, not too close to Waterton Lake, but
from there the rivers they spread out, oh, I’d say about the
place it must be about 25 miles wide. And it runs way to the
east, to the north shores of the Old Man River and west of
Lethbridge. And when all the chiefs, (because Bull Head died
1874) no 1875 he died somewheres around about first part of
February, first few days of February. And he died of
pneumonia. And it was after his death when Colonel Macleod
finally went to see Chief Crowfoot to make treaty. Because Bull
Head has turned him down when he came there in October 1874.
He turned him down, he told him, when Colonel Macleod approached
him and told him that the Queen wants to make treaty with
him. And Bull Head turned him down and told him, “No, I’m not
ready to make treaty with you.” So he told Colonel Macleod,”You
go back the way you came from, but don’t take any fear that
anything is going to happen. I’ll see that nothing happens.”
So Colonel Macleod he gave him a uniform, the Queen’s own guide
uniform. So when he got this uniform from Colonel Macleod, Chief
Bull Head, in turn, gave him his name Bull Head, that he
himself is a great leader, great hunter, great warrior. And he
had the big responsibility of his people to see they got a big
area for their living where there’s plenty of game and lots of
water where you get a lot of fish and fowl. They look after
this from Red Deer River, Red Deer right straight south to
Yellowstone river. And up to the Rockies and east to the
Cypress Hills. This was all under Chief Bull Head’s, his
people to live here. So he lives up to the mountains far west
as the great divide, where the river, where the waters run each
side, where the river runs east and where the river water runs
west to the west coast. All anything that runs on this side
of the divide is Bull Head’s area, territory. So when he died
Bull Head, Colonel Macleod, he camped, he was here for three
years before he think that Crowfoot was the next successor of
Bull Head. So he went to see, they went to see Crowfoot to
sign treaty. And so that’s where the buffalo ended up was
before the treaty was signed. The two governments had agreed to
try and kill off the buffalo and…because they found out it
was the Indians’ great, the most valuable food and get all
their clothing from the buffalo because everything that comes
from buffalo, it’s used to the Indians.
John: Did the disappearance of the buffalo change their lives?
Tom: Oh yes. Well yes, it put the Indians on these
reservations which I call concentration camps. Well the Indian
can’t do nothing, there’s too many laws for him to respect.
You take this Indian Act, well the Indian people they respect
it oh for years and years, until the last, just about 25 years,
when the people got a little more smartened up in education.
So they thought they should fight for their rights. And now
today we found out that the Indian Act, it really means to
protect the white man and to punish the Indian. That’s what the
Indian Act means for the whole people of Canada. So that’s why
they got so many bad deals because they didn’t care what kind
of a deal they made for the Indian as long as they knew they
could get away with something. Because the white man they give
up the sweet talk; in the long run this sweet talk turns sour
and bitter. Then it’s no good for the Indian when it runs sour.
John: How were the Indians able to survive after the buffalo
disappeared?
Tom: Well they had a lot of uh, they still had a little bit of
hunting to do when the buffalo disappeared. They still had the
moose and elk or the antelope on the short grass country or
east on the Cypress and Medicine Hat area. All this eastern
country, it’s all short grass country, that’s where the
antelope run, but they’re not so, they’re not so,…buffalo is
the best hunting animals that the Indians, they live on.
Mainly, and for fish, well, they get all kinds of fish, until
white people clean out the rivers and lakes of the fish. They
kill them off just for sport not to eat, but the Indians, they
fish them to eat and to live on them for a living.
John: After the treaty was signed did it change the way the
people lived much?
Tom: Yes. Well it’s quite a…they had to go and live on
these reserves and oh that’s when they started to give them all
kinds of instructions, before they know they were free, before,
but well, after the treaty, well they tell them all kinds of
instructions to do which was no good for the Indian people.
And it really made them, …well they tell them this is a good
way to live but it’s not true.
John: What did the people around here, the Peigans, the
Bloods, the Blackfoot and the Sarcee, what did they think about
those treaties that were being made down in the States before
they signed their treaty here?
Tom: Well I’ll tell you, for instance the United States
government, they live up to their word on the education,
because that was one of the first promises they gave to the
Indians in the States to give them education, and they gave them
education so the Indians in the States they’re a hundred years
ahead of us in their education. They were well educated a
hundred years ago. While the people in Canada were educated
and it only made them just another class of people. They went
and lost their culture, traditions and their way of life and
they’re not qualified for the white society the way they were
educated. Yeah, it just made them to, the way they were
educated, they were scared to talk, they don’t know what
they’re really talking about. It’s just the poor education
they got from the government.
John: Do you think the signing of the treaty down in the
States influenced the people to sign the treaty here?
Tom: No, it’s got nothing to do with that but I’ll tell you
the treaties that were made in the States were altogether
different. Because the Indians that fought for their rights oh
long ago. They had been fighting because they had been
educated and they learned to use this claim, they knew how to
work on it and they got a lot of land what they lost – they got
it back, because they were educated. But here in Canada the
Indians were not educated right, well for a long time they
didn’t know what. And this, the Indians in the States they got
their voting rights, oh a long time ago too. So that’s why
they made their claims work out more for them than it did in
Canada. But now with this we’ve got our voting rights, we seem
to make another step into the daylight. We know where we stand
because there are a lot of people who are willing to help the
Indian people today instead of just the Indian Act. Oh there
was a big, would say a big war between the white man and the
Indian on the strength of the Indian Act.
John: The interpreter for Treaty 7, Jerry Potts…
Tom: No, Jerry Potts was just a guide.
John: He was just a guide?
Tom: Yeah, he was just a guide. Yeah, he was taking the
Mounties where they wanted to go. But he was not the
interpreter for the whole cause. The interpreter for the first
treaty at the Blackfoot Crossing, Cluny; it was James Bird, and
he was a halfbreed from the States. Well he talks the full
Blackfoot language and well practically he was more Indian than
a halfbreed and he was the one that was interpreter for the
whole thing when the first treaty was signed at Blackfoot
Crossing in Cluny. Because I visited his on, oh years after,
fifty years after the treaty was signed, and that’s what he
told me, he said “My father was interpreter at the Blackfoot
Crossing when they made the first treaty.”
John: What part did Jerry Potts play in the signing of the
treaty?
Tom: Well I couldn’t say what, cause I don’t hear anymore
about his, about Jerry, except on occasional trips with the
Mounties. That’s all I know, that’s all I heard about him, but
he was not the interpreter, because Tom Bird he told me himself
because he talks good English but he never went to school. But
I guess his father must have went to school and he knows
English well and he can talk Indian good, so he was the one
that interpreted for the whole signing of the Treaty 7 at the
Blackfoot Crossing. Because I visited Tom Bird in 1924, on his
own homestead, and just across the border his land adjacent to
the Canadian and U.S. border. He lives on that creek there, I
think they call it St. Mary’s Creek or Swift Current,
something like Swift Current. That’s it because St. Mary’s
River is on the other side. And this creek they call it Swift
Current, fast running water in other words, you call it. And
he lives right there.
John: Were there any treaties made before this treaty seven
with the Blackfoot?
never heard. As far as I hear about the treaties. That was
only treaty signed, was treaty number seven.
