De zes King's Singers anno 2009

Sinds 1968 onbetwist ‘the world’s leading acappella group’.

Paul Phoenix, tenor

Philip Lawson, baritone

Christopher Gabbitas, baritone

Stephen Connolly, bas

Well, I’ve just been sitting here, waiting on my night class to get started so I figured I met as well get my other review for the week put up.

Acappella will always have a special place in my heart. There were a couple of years where, literally, all I would listen to was Acappella. I would take out one awesome CD of theirs, just to pop another one right in. You may hear me mention few other musical artists as “favorites” here on my blog, but no one can ever replace Acappella as my all time favorite. They have just made too much good music for too long. And with that being said, this post is about their newest CD, Find Your Way.

Find Your Way is one of those CDs that is solid, but isn’t going to blow you away. There are a couple of what will be Acappella classics, but for the most part, you don’t really feel bad about skipping to the next song.

The opening song, “Calling Forth”, is one of those classics I was talking about. It is a real high energy song that I can see Acappella opening concerts with for a long time. To me, the other two classics are “Something to Hold On To” and “Find Your Way.” Too be perfectly honest, other than those three, I don’t see any other songs on the CD worth singing in concert once the newness of the CD wears off. “Something to Hold On To” is my favorite song on the album. Zac George is one of the most soulful white guys I’ve ever heard. And if you’ve ever heard him sing his version of the Acappella classic “Rescue” live, you know exactly what I’m talking about. The lyrics are generic, the melody is a little better, but the vocals are awesome. “Find Your Way” features Zach Wilson, the high tenor, as the lead, and he does an awesome job. He is definitely the best high tenor Acappella has had since Kevin Schaffer, and maybe the best they’ve ever had.

Other than that though, nothing about the CD really stands out. I think the biggest problem with the current lineup in Acappella is they don’t have that powerful lead voice. Sure, Wilson and George are both incredibly talented vocalists, but neither has the type of voice that takes charge of a room. Still, I enjoyed my week listening to the CD. If you are a hardcore Acappella fan, then you must buy it, but if you are just a casual listener, you’re best served just downloading the three songs I was talking about.

Okay, class starts in fifteen minutes so I must be off. Until next time, be good.

On 23rd October, MBC’s “Star The Secret” did a coverage on TVXQ’s popularity

On 23rd October, MBC’s “Star The Secret” did a coverage on TVXQ’s popularity level in Japan, saying that TVXQ is a group that ensured that “Any product that they endorse is sure to sell; as long as they release an album, it’ll immediately be safe in the number one ranking in 5 minutes; to get a ticket for their constantly sold-out concerts, fans have to go into mouse-wars; they are the group that has the biggest fanbase in the company.”

Something that caught everyone’s eye recently: TVXQ is a hot group in Japan, and their vocal abilities are recognised in Japan. Production crew and staff who have worked with TVXQ, as well as Japanese fans all say that “We’ve always known that TVXQ is an acapella group. In Korea, they are recognised as an idol group for their dancing and singing, and their vocal abilities are now being shown off in Japan.”

It was only when the production crew for the show was checking on TVXQ’s popularity in Japan, did they realise that TVXQ’s popularity in Japan has long exceeded their expectations by far, in fact, they’ve climbed to unimaginable heights.

Pinky candy, endorsed by TVXQ, is now selling nationwide in Japan. In the biggest Japanese music sales arena, the whole place is filled with large posters of TVXQ and The Beatles. The person in charge told the programme crew “TVXQ’s albums are popular in the first place, so we will put up a special selling booth in the middle of the arena, and of TVXQ’s albums will be sold there. As long as TVXQ put out a record, it’s almost confirmed that they will reign in the charts, they are really popular.”

A staff from Japanese station KNTV said this about TVXQ’s popularity to the production crew, “TVXQ, whose popularity is shooting skyhigh in Japan, is different from the Hallyu starts that enjoy popularity here. TVXQ didn’t use the Hally wave and didn’t come to Japan as Korean stars; debuting instead, as a JPOP group in Japan, formed by 5 Koreans. During their debut period, like all new artists, they went around and did small-scale activities, and the members of TVXQ even went to the broadcast stations personally to promote their albums.”

When they first debuted, they stood on a platform and performed in front of 30 people. Ironically, when they were experiencing this in Japan, it was at a time when they were at the height of their popularity in Korea, sweeping all the awards in the ceremonies, and becoming Korea’s top stars in 2006.

They relinquished their positions as top stars, as well as their pride, and started doing activities in Japan from the bottom. After almost 4 long years of working in Japan, TVXQ finally performed on their dream stage, the Tokyo Dome, with their own concert, and are unanimously acknowledged by the Japanese audience: TVXQ is the most successful Korean artist in Japan.

Many of the regular readers of westcoastwitness.com know Sean Algaier.

In addition to being the youth minister for the Jenks Church of Christ in the Tulsa area, Sean is also one of the lead singers of Watershed - a high energy Christian acappella group that’s frequently made appearances at Church of Christ retreats and workshops within the past five or six years.

Someone posted a link to this video on Facebook, and I clicked on it when I recognized Sean’s face in the still shot.

Apparently, Sean is a contestant on the upcoming season of NBC’s The Biggest Loser – a reality show where overweight people compete to see who can lose the most (here’s Sean’s profile on NBC’s site).

Good for him!

I know how tough it is to lose weight and admire Sean for putting himself out there, admitting he has a problem, and taking steps to fix it.

I’ve never watched more than a few minutes of The Biggest Loser, but will be tuning in this season rooting for Sean to win. The season premiere is September 15 at 8/7c.

Am I sharing yesterday’s news over here … did you already know about this?

Here’s a related video of Sean poking fun at himself and sharing his passion for nachos, fried chicken, rolls, and gravy (seriously … lol):

What in the world???

Anyway, watch Sean on The Biggest Loser!

(Click here to visit Sean’s fanpage on Facebook)

UPDATE: The show is now over – check out Sean’s transformation here. He lost over 150 pounds!

So I didn’t get the part on the show. Oh well. I can still be an extra and write for it, and fill in whatever parts they need. I like the idea of the show enough to keep working on it so hopefully I’ll move up.

I had my second voice lesson today, I don’t know if I like them yet. This teacher is much different than Gail.

I got my theater book today, and the rest of my books came in yesterday, so now I have everything that I need.

My games class is pretty cool, we started second life today by creating accounts and avatars. I have no idea how to do anything yet, but you can literally customize everything on your character. You could manipulate every feature in multiple ways, and there was even an option for love handles with a scroll bar ranging from more to less love.
I have to read a book based on a video game, so I ordered a Halo book today. I’ve always thought those were strange, I guess I’ll find out if they’re any good.

In my hall there’s a bulletin board about feminism and it’s really boring. I got tired of looking at it, so I put up a sign labeled “Dumbledore’s Army”. Not only are there several signatures, but there is a note that says “whoever thought of this is awesome”.

So far there hasn’t been a lot of first year activities in my building, which I’m kind of surprised about. I was expecting that there would be so many things to do I’d have to choose. However, there is a scavenger hunt this weekend and Grace, Katie, Brittany, Julie and I are signed up as a team. Hopefully that will be fun.

I also signed up for an audition for the all girls acappella group, so thats on Sunday.

There’s really not a lot of interesting things to report.

But oh by the way, everyone likes my bonsai and the little halo guys that are guarding it. So there.

It may be an “online classic” (read: from 2006) but as a child of the 80s and a confirmed acappella geek, this live performance of classic Nintendo game themes by the University of Washington’s Redefined was too good not to share.

The Tetris choreography was particularly inspired. And when the bass did the little theme from the dungeon level in Mario Brothers, I instantly thought of Stockwell singing “you are in the dungeon. you are in the dungeon.”

Fun diversion on a busy morning.

The Church of Christ believe that musical instruments are not to be used in church service, they practice baptismal regeneration, and they use the Church of Christ title so that others will know who they are. They are a denomination!!!

As to musical instruments in Church, cult leader Johnny Robertson argues from their absence of mention in the New Testament. I have no doubt that the early churches probably did not use musical instruments. Also, I have no problem with someone who chooses not to use musical instruments in church. I think the acappella voices of the saints of God are beautiful and often in our Church service we sing without musical instruments. However, I do not think something is evil and wrong to use in Church just because it is not mentioned in the apostolic records of the New Testament. No Church in the New Testament owned its own building, but met in homes or in other public places. No Church in the New Testament had pews. No Church in the New Testament had electricity or sound systems. The Bible never mentions whether any Church service included a time of announcements or a Sunday School. We have all of these and I am convinced that they are acceptable. I assume you have none of these in your Church, Mr. Robertson.

For instance, the New Testament does not mention the Sunday School since it is a much later invention. However, if the Sunday School is properly used to teach the Bible (a scriptural command) and to reach the lost (another scriptural command), then the Sunday School becomes a scriptural practice. However, nothing is to be justified by using unscriptural means to fulfill a scriptural end. For instance, using a church bazaar to raise money for the work of God may sound scriptural, but the Bible teaches us that we are not to finance the work of God with the funds of the lost. Therefore, it becomes unscriptural.

Musical instruments, if used with care, can enhance the singing of praise to the Lord. That was seen by the Christian Church that split from the Church of Christ (I wonder if you consider them a denomination). They were obviously considered a help to praise in the Old Testament and in heaven. It seems strange to say that something God thought was a blessing in the Old Testament and is considered a blessing in heaven is an evil in the New Testament church. I think the burden of proof would lie on you and not on me. When and why did God change His mind?
