Geneva, 20 November 2009. Particle beams are once again circulating in the worlds most powerful particle accelerator, CERN’s Large Hadron Collider (LHC). This news comes after the machine was handed over for operation on Wednesday morning. A clockwise circulating beam was established at ten o’clock this evening. This is an important milestone on the road towards first physics at the LHC, expected in 2010.

As I reported earlier here on Road Reality, Toyota is in hot water over stuck gas pedals.  A statement this morning from Toyota gives us their solution for the recall, as well as a timeline for its resolution.  While it’s too late to save the lives of the California State Trooper and his family, who died as a result of this flaw, it’s a wake-up call to Toyota and the rest of the manufacturers.  Any manufacturer that doesn’t incorporate a “smart throttle” which cuts engine power when the brake pedal is pressed needs to think long and hard about how to get that feature into all of their future vehicles.  The crash which brought this issue to the forefront of the news also brings with it the question of how to stop a car equipped with an engine start/stop button, versus a traditional key and ignition cylinder.  Read the original post for how to stop said vehicles.  Continue reading to find out what Toyota is doing to keep drivers safe.

Before the end of 2009, owners of the Toyota Camry, Toyota Avalon and Lexus ES 350 should expect to receive a letter informing them that their car is on the recall list.  In 2010, owners of the other affected vehicles (listed at the end of this post) will also receive recall notices from Toyota.

The recall will start in early 2010, and the first step is reshaping the gas pedal of the recalled vehicles.  Next, the floor mats will be replaced with a new one, designed to help prevent the stuck gas pedal.  Toyota will also offer a new design of the gas pedal, starting in April.  The Camry, Avalon, as well as Lexus IS 250/350 and ES 350 models will be modified to add a “brake override” system which cuts engine power if both the gas and brake pedals are pressed simultaneously, and Toyota is confident that these solutions will work to prevent any more problems with the affected vehicles.

 Large Hadron Collider produces first proton collisions in Big Bang mission

Organizatia Europeana pentru Cercetarea Nucleara a anuntat repornirea celui mai mare accelerator de particole dupa 1 an de pauza in urma unei defectiuni! Acceleratorul Hadron Collider reprezinta cea mai scumpa investitie intr-un proiect de cercetare! Costurile acestui proiect se ridica la peste 10 miliarde euro! Accelaratorul a functionat 4 zile de la prima punere in funciune! Se pare ca au aparut probleme la sistemul de racire care trebuie sa mentina o temperatura constanta de -271 grade celsius. Aceste mare tunel se afla la granita dintre Elvetia si Franta!
Se pare ca marele tunel intampina tot mai multe probleme si foarte multi bani necesita reparatiile acestuia. Un accident bizar si ciudat a fost atunci cand o pasare a patruns in tunel fiind nevoie de oprire a acceleratorului.

Acceleratorul de particule Large Hadron Collider (LHC) va fi restartat sambata dimineata, in cadrul unui nou experiment.

Inginerii se pregatesc masinaria pentru a emite o raza de particule sub-atomice care v-a strabate intregul tunel circular de 27 de km care formeaza LHC-ul. Constructia uriasului device aflat sub pamant, la granita dintre Franta si Elvetia, si experimentele care s-au realizat pana in prezent, a costat pana acum suma colosala de 6 miliarde de lire sterline. Scopul acceleratorului este acela de a oferi oamenilor de stiinta informatii pretioase despre primele momente de dupa Big Bang, de ce si in cum s-a produs formarea si expansiunea Universului. Cu toate acestea, pana in prezent, acceleratorul nu s-a achitat de aceasta sarcina, in timpul primelor teste, LHC defectandu-se de cateva ori, accidente care au costat milioane de euro.

Acceleratorul LHC a fost inchis pentru reparatii in septembrie 2008. Operat de Organizatia Europeana pentru Cercetari Nucleare (Cern), LHC are menirea de a crea conditii similare cu acelea existente in primele momente dupa Big Bang – un mister neelucidat nici pana astazi de oamenii de stiinta.

For the last couple of months, Toyota has been in hot water.  At least one accident has already been blamed on a dislodged floor mat, which can cause the gas pedal to become stuck under in a wide-open position, leading to unintended acceleration.  In all, there are 3.8 million affected vehicles, and Toyota says it has over 5 million dollars earmarked for recalls.

The problem was reported to be in the design of the floor mat catch, which can allow the floor mat to slide forward, blocking the gas pedal from returning to an “idle” state.  Now, it’s being reported that Toyota may announce that it will shorten the gas pedal on affected vehicles.

An interesting design issue surfaced a month or so ago, wherein it was found that when the gas pedal is pushed down on some Toyota vehicles, the amount of power able to go to the braking system is minimized, which can lead to one of the affected vehicles not being able to stop as quickly, if at all.  Some cars have “smart throttles” now, which prevent the car from accelerating when the brake pedal is pushed down.

Consumer Reports has an excellent article on how to stop your car if you experience the issue at hand, and they include other makes as well.  They say to shift your car into neutral.  Don’t turn the key off or hold down your Engine Start/Stop button (where equipped) to stop the car, as will shut down your power steering and brake systems as well, making the car more difficult to maneuver, and possibly harder to stop as well.  By shifting into neutral, you leave the power steering and brake systems active, and most modern cars have a limiter in them to prevent engine damage from keeping the gas pedal floored.  Once you’ve come to a complete stop, you can turn off the engine.

I just arrived in Geneva after the red eye flight from New York. The passenger next to me, bespectacled, with a laptop and a serious attitude, started talking to me. Where are you from? Where do you live? How long were you in New York? Then he told me what he did, and my curiosity peaked. Ah, so you are one of the people who will suck us out in a black hole? I asked jokingly. He replied somberly that it was not a joke and people were suing them because of the black hole rumor. Allow me to explain, despite being so jet-lagged. The man in question works as a nuclear physicist in CERN (the European Center for Nuclear Research) where the infamous CERN accelerator, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) lies in a 27 km tunnel underground. The LHC sort of got off to a bad start for when it was attempting to re-create the big bang, it sort of blew up. My neighbor on the plane explained that outside companies had connected the magnets without soldering them properly, which is why the experiment failed. The papers carried stories at the time of the risk that the accelerator might cause a black hole to suck in, well, Geneva. I asked our physicist friend about that, and he said, yes, while there was a theory that this experiment they are working on would create a black hole, it will be short-lived. Hmmm, I am thinking we should not be anywhere near Geneva at the time of the experiment that may create a black hole, the sound of it is not too reassuring. Well, then, the best is to get inside information on when the test will happen. Friday, he said. Which Friday? I asked, with a worried look. This coming one. Oh, great. That is the Friday that we are organizing a huge event at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, so we are definitely going to be there. Now, what is left to do is pray and hope that the physicists know what they’re doing, sort of like you hope the pilot and Co-pilot of a plane during a harrowing flight know what they’re doing, and are not on a suicide mission of some sort.
Life is complicated, especially when billions are spent to experiment with something a few excited physicists think is terribly important- to simplify theories of energy, as my fellow passenger said. Not my first priority, had I been in charge of spending many billions.
Let’s hope our black hole is short-lived then, so we can enjoy the upcoming skiing season. No, wait, there might not be one as we are in the middle of an unnatural heat wave in the middle of November. Ahh, this is what I would have spent money on, correcting the global warming and climate change problem, rather than proving a theory. But what do I know. I’m not a nuclear physicist.

By now I think most people know how the Prius and other hybrid cards operate. Most cars’ breaks are just like a bycycle break: a clamp that generates a large amount of friction and slows the car down. This is a terrible waste of energy: the car’s motion is converted into heat and damage (to the brake pads) and can never be reclaimed. Think of it as wasted gas, excess pollution, etc.

Hybrids are much more clever. They attach an electric motor/generator directly to the wheel and when you want to break then use the wheel’s motion to run the generator. This requires work – which slows down the car. Instead of the energy being lost, however, it is poured into a battery. The energy can then be reused to get the car started again. Huge savings in gas! This is also why hybrids tend to amazing at city driving, but not long distance driving (where this doesn’t help much because you aren’t stop/start).

Before we got sophisticated with generators and batteries we did something much more mechanical. At least for public transportation: the gyrobus:

Instead of a battery, however, a giant flywheel was used to store the energy. These things were built back in the 1950’s.

Guess what… the same technology has been used for particle accelerators – specifically the Bevatron!

These are 65 ton flywheels, and there are two of them. Here is an abstract from a paper that describes the control system that ran these puppies:

The Bevatron/Bevalac main guide field power supply stores 680 MJ in the flywheel-shaft systems of two independent motor-generator sets. During the normal acceleration cycle of various heavy-ion beams, the energies of the rotating shafts are converted to energy stored in the main magnet guide field. At the end of the acceleration cycle, the magnet energy is inverted back to the shafts. Generally, this takes place from 10 to 15 times per minute. The rapid switching of ions, energy, and beam lines at the Bevalac has required various control techniques for fast switching between all operational Bevalac fields within 1 min. The power supply control systems and operating parameters are described.

The principle is same as with the hybrid car, or the gyrobus, but all the sizes and power are extreme (as usual for the field of particle physics). Imagine spinning up and down those flywheels at a rate of once every 10 seconds or so! Of course, that system would never have fit in a car!

While I don’t know the answer to this, I suspect that flywheels are still one of the best ways to store energy that has to be quickly extracted over the timescale of seconds. Batteries probably can’t do it without costing a huge amount, and capacitors probably have a much lower energy density – though they are ideal for other stored energy applications that require much faster discharge times!

NVIDIA and Visualization Sciences Group (VSG), developer of 3D solutions for the oil and gas industry, announced the newest release of the Open Inventor 3D Graphics Toolkit will employ the NVIDIA^® CompleX™ scene-scaling acceleration engine, enabling the visualization and manipulation of huge data sets required for energy exploration.

            Open Inventor 8.1 by VSG integrates the CompleX engine, enabling advanced 3D applications to fully scale across the multiple graphics processing units (GPUs) powering NVIDIA Quadro^® Plex visual computing systems. This technology turns a single workstation into a visual supercomputer, providing engineers and scientists an immersive, ultra-high resolution experience capable of handling extremely large visual scenes, such as those used in seismic interpretation and reservoir modeling.
