Classical Accordion: Great Article by Guardian UK

The article Accordion Reborn published Wednesday November 19, 2009, got my attention. From the Guardian, a thorough and highly accessible article on the state of contemporary ‘Classical’ Accordion music. Specifically Denmark, which since at least the 1970’s has been a bastion of creativity and genius in this genre.

For most people, the sound of the accordion conjures up images of bearded morris dancers, or jolly sea shanties sung with raised tankards of real ale. But in Denmark, the accordion has a classical life, with a whole generation of serious musicians developing new means of expression on an instrument Mark Twain once called “a Steinway on your lap”.

Supporting and fleshing out the work and world of composer Jexper Holmen, we learn about his newest project being performed in England.

Alongside Holmen will be two Norwegian accordionists, Frode Andersen and Frode Haltli, accomplished classical players who graduated from the prestigious accordion programme at the Royal Danish Academy of Music. So are there lots of high-flying jobs for accordionists in Scandinavia? “I would never aspire to become a full-time classical accordion soloist,” admits Haltli, “because I wouldn’t be able to eat.” In addition to solo work, Haltli plays with a jazz ensemble and a folk group, and has released a CD of new arrangements of traditional Norwegian melodies.

Daran Kravanh, a Cambodian accordionist, has been playing concerts and speaking engagements with his wife, Bree Lafreniere. Lafreniere has written a book telling Kravanh’s many stories of avoiding death and the meeting horror of Pol-Pot’s regime and the Khmer Rouge.

I found Kravanh’s stories fascinating and horrifying. Edifying and an important reminder of the evil in the world.

Kravanh has a disc of music and Lafreniere has her book. Both are titled Music Through the Dark, you can find more information here.

After taking power in 1975, Pol Pot, leader of the Khmer Rouge, renamed the country Democratic Kampuchea. Their goal was to create a purely agrarian-based Communist society. People who lived in cities were deported to the countryside where they had to work in collective farms or forced labor projects. Even after losing power following a Vietnamese military intervention in December 1978, the Khmer Rouge still maintained control in some regions of Cambodia. Between 1.5 and 3 million Cambodians are estimated to have died by murder and starvation, especially the intellectual elite, during these years. The United Nations later declared what happened in Cambodia the largest per capita loss of life in the twentieth century.

Bree learned quickly Daran used music, specifically accordion music, to survive his ordeal. It was like a sign to Kravanh when he found his accordion on a stump in the forest considering the rarity of such an instrument in the Asian country.“There are not many accordions in Cambodia,” Kravanh said.

Finally there is something written about this concert! I had been seeing people twitter about it, and I saw some things on Coba’s blog. But I was unable to get the drift of exactly what went on. And now Elke Ahrenholz has posted a write up on accordions.com. On Octover 23rd, 2009:

To mark the 90th Anniversary of Victoria Accordions, a truly superlative concert was organised. A mega-event of three very famous accordionists together on stage in the Megura Permission Hall, a 1200 seat Theater with excellent acoustics in Tokyo.

The three were Richard Galliano (France), Frank Marocco (USA) and Coba (Japan) who enchanted the audience with a concert program lasting approximately 2 hours.

I wish I was there to see that.

Some small thoughts from Coba on his blog:

Successfully completed the world premiere of the concert accordion contest the world’s three largest Keru Meguro Persimmon.

Richard and Frank is really amazing.
Were giants.
Was consistently full of great love from the stage to rehearse.

But feel the responsibility as the fate of those who bear the same instrument, we are very innocently, “accordion-like” the atmosphere. Became deeply ingrained in the minds of each one through one ear of each phrase ….

It is nice to finally get the scoop on this concert. I really hope they release it as a recording or DVD.

Luc Steeno is u wel bekend?
Wel, vandaag kwamen we zo via omweggetjes (hoe beland je anders bij zo’n dingen?) bij zijn ene hit over die accordeon.

Nu vroeg ik mij af: is het “hij speelde accordeon” of “hij speelt de accordeon”?

Je zou kunnen denken dat het “hij speelt de accordeon” is, omdat hij op de moment dat hij het zingt accordeon aan het spelen is. Dat zou logisch zijn.
Ware het niet dat de zin die volgt “heel alleen voor ons twee” is. En die Luc Steeno hit wordt door duizenden – wat zeg ik? Miljoenen – mensen aanhoort. Dus misschien is het toch “hij speelde accordeon” en speelde hij in het verleden accordeon voor hun twee…

Interessant om over na te denken op een woensdagavond, nee?

Throughout the teens and well into the 1920s, Guido Deiro was a dominant voice of accordion. As Guido Deiro showcased the piano accordion through his vaudeville performances across the United States, more and more people were introduced to the instrument, the popularity of the accordion increased. In 1928, Guido was featured in an early sound film, Vitaphone #2968, titled GUIDO DEIRO: The World’s Foremost Piano-Accordionist. He appeared as an accordionist in several other motion pictures, such as the musical Shine on Harvest Moon and the Carole Lombard comedy The Other Man.

French Jazz Accordion - Translated from Taiwanese Writer

There is a big jazz festival in Taiwan next week. And because of twitter and press releases and such, I have learned that Taiwan loves French jazz accordion. (And so do I.)

I came across this really great article written by Taiwanese radio DJ Dannyboy of Philharmonic Radio Taipei. The article is mostly a portrait of Galliano’s musical spirit, while also touching on the connection between the French and Jazz. So with Dannyboy’s permission, I have translated and re-posted the article below (you’ll love it):

Music has paintings, music has poetry – Richard Galliano

University when I read that the French departments, to the romantic vision of France’s style has always been unlimited. Frustratingly, there is until now, I’ve never been to France. The Philly Fringe Fest Show Cirque Ular came and went. For me it was all consuming, and kept me from updating on here.

Then my computer died, and I got a cold. But I’m over the cold, have a new computer and am recording the music to Cirque Ular here at the house. I should have them all done in about a month or so.

Plus que 5 jours avant les premières rencontres amicales de chanteurs de rue à Villedieu et toutes les associations sont sur le pied de guerre !

Artistes et exposants ont répondu “présent” à l’invitation. La soirée-cabaret de samedi 3 au soir va bientôt se jouer à guichet fermé !

Au menu : apéro des Goualantes, pâté berrichon, coq au vin et pomme vapeur, fromages, tarte et café. Pendant la soirée, tous les artistes chanteront dans une ambiance de cabaret du début du XXe siècle.

Alfredo Costa Monteiro est le premier invité des Rendez-Vous de la médiathèque de Bruxelles, saison 2009-2010. La rencontre aura lieu le vendredi 25 septembre, à 19h30. Accès gratuit, réservation souhaitée sur passage44@lamediatheque.be ou au 02 218 44 27.

Musicien d’origine portugaise, né en 1964, installé à Barcelone, Costa Monteiro développe lors de ses concerts, dans ses installations sonores et sur enregistrement un langage musical à la fois non conventionnel et viscéral.

Lorsqu’il joue d’un instrument traditionnel comme l’accordéon, il en capte les sonorités cachées tel un explorateur de contrées inconnues. D’autres fois, ce sont les sons de son espace de vie ou de feuilles de papier qui prennent de nouvelles formes dans ses mises en scène musicales.

Mais quel que soit le matériau, Alfredo Costa Monteiro se révèle toujours dans une démarche double, qui unit une réflexion approfondie sur les modes opératoires et une exécution décidée. Chez lui, l’improvisation ne laisse pas de place à l’hésitation, on reçoit à écouter le résultat d’un projet solidement conçu.

Alfredo Costa Monteiro conversera avec Yves Poliart et exécutera une courte intervention musicale.

Alfredo Costa Monteiro se produira en concert le samedi 26 septembre à Courtrai dans le cadre du festival Happy New Ears.

In bib Park te Merksem brengen Renée Van Hekken en Bart Wils op 11 oktober 2009 een voorprogramma van tien gedichten en accordeonmuziek in een aperitiefconcert. Reserveren bij ccMerksem.

Er is zwierigheid, een speelsheid in deze cyclus, schrijft Renée Van Hekken in de inleiding van De Roos van Allendale, waarin ze zich gebaseerd heeft op een 19e-eeuwse ballade over het mooiste meisje van Allendale in Northumberland, een oud verhaal van schoonheid en vergankelijkheid. Die vertelstof wordt ook wereldwijd verspreid in Schotse en Ierse folk songs.

Het is het verhaal van de roos en de zeeman, die altijd onderweg op de baren, steeds terugdenkt aan zijn geliefde, de roos van Allendale.

Dit verhaal klinkt erg nostalgisch, maar is in deze turbulente tijd zeker niet achterhaald, integendeel. Romantiek met een grote R is van alle tijden, verzachtend en vertederend en ook enigszins verstillend voor een overbelast gemoed, dat enorm veel rotzooi moet verwerken (…).

Richard Galliano Interview

Sitting on a couch right across from you with his accordion on, talking and playing his influences: the maestro known for creating the ‘New Musette’, Richard Galliano.

“The accordion is a traveling instrument, and that is why it is found all over the world.” opens the interview. An organ, Galliano calls it, and then plays an excerpt of a Bach toccatta.

With his accordion in hand, Galliano describes and performs the influence of music of North Brazil, the Carpathian, and Piazzolla’s Tango (which he says possess a link to our collective emotional memory.)

But most of the interview is spent by Galliano explaining the musical origins/history of musette (Italian, French, Gyspy) and then his own way history of adding and creating the ‘New Musette’. How he created the sound and has kept it evolving into something today much more than ‘New Musette’.

The interview cannot be longer than 30 minutes, but it is enormously fascinating. The live concert is brilliant and wonderful as well. But this interview is very intimate and rare.

Guy Klucevsek and Alex Meixner perform New-Polka in Brooklyn

Guy Klucevsek and Alex Meixner played a great concert at Barbes, Brooklyn on Friday night, August 21st. Half of the show they played together on many of Guy’s fast and furious compositional exponents of polkas and other such odd-meter dances. The other half of the show they played solo, Alex performing some of his favorite polkas and folk tunes from Eastern Europe. Guy played original compositions spanning his past 20 years as a performer. It seems like this might become a bigger thing for these two giants of accordion. Both originally from Pennsylvania, both with early traditions in polka and the like. If there’s Nuevo-Tango and New-Musette, is this New-Polka?
