We’re excited to start rolling in the holiday season with new developments at ACG. We’re still hard at work internally, but here’s a few developing points going on with us:

1) New website to be released for the Mountain Shadow Pub. ACG is preparing to launch a new website for the favorite North Burnaby pub. The website will be a mix of flash and AJAX navigation, and will also feature a simple mobile site for cell phone users.

2) Announcing our social media flagship project dubbed “Justin”. Justin (shortened from “Just-In”) will be a social media management tool, allowing users to monitor social media and have a central social communication platform. Justin has been quietly discussed with a few candidate Alpha testers in the last two months, and we are hoping to soon have a test version ready for our testers. We currently do not have a set schedule, but we are 80% to Alpha. Justin will be replacing our test app, Dustin.

3) Working with Crush Marketing! ACG is happy to be working with Frank Leffelaar from Crush. Frank has ten years of internet marketing experience with large European corporations, and we are happy to be working with his expertise.

Allow me the indulgence of breaking habit, and posting something athletic-footwear based on this blog. I’m aware there’s another sit for this kind of thing, but alas, at time-of-writing, all things army are tinged with controversy and matters of Ministry Of Defence military issue quality are deeply topical. I’ve been known to complain about build on a product, but when it’s a matter of life or death rather than cracked paint on the sole, it’s something else altogether.

As a result, the release of Nike’s Special Forces Boot earlier in the year was a subdued one rather than a bells and whistles affair.  So I thought I’d spotlight it here instead in a rare moment of product focus. I also think a lot of the writeups I’ve seen elsewhere have been pretty dry.

Seeing as I’m surrounded by the things, I don’t get very excited by shoes any more. The same happened when I work experienced in a comic book store – never bought another funny book after October 1993. The experience of retail and cost pricing taught me just how disposable they are. When it comes to shoes, it takes an awful lot to pique my interest to purchasing point rather than mere freeloading. The SFB is one of those times (and no, this isn’t payola-led). I’ve sung the praises of the glorious ACG Air Tarn here before, but I love the Baltoro, Air Rhyolite and the Air Superdome (not the terrible Max Superdome though, which deserves the purgatory of outlet store hell). Until Timberland staged a comeback lately, it seemed that the Goadome love could spread from Washington D.C. to anywhere the big boot look could thrive. But I wanted to see some progression beyond the vintage revisits that are substantially responsible for my frequent bouts of sneaker narcolepsy. I think the SFB brings it.

“Those are ugly!” is music to my ears when it comes to this kind of thing. Some of these shoes have the upper only an oddball could love, but they slap me out of snooze-mode. I’d been waiting for Nike to drop something like this after adidas’s age-old black-on-black GSG9 army model, often criticised for traction issues, but clean in appearance continued to shift units. I love tactical/army and desert boot design. The GSG9 even been followed with a sequel, the GSG9.2 that employs Climacool and adiPRENE into the model. It’s okay, but Oakley’s Elite Special Forces S.I. Assault Boot was a more exciting big-brand design – as I understand, Oakley’s army-standard verson was US-made, with a China-made civilian version. Britain’s Hi-Tec, who made the abominable Silver Shadow and Squash, enjoying brief success with hi-tops for those too poor to afford adidas Ewing Rivalrys before succumbing to cut-price shame had huge success with their Vibram soled Magnum line for police and military, but the Hi-Tec name is still a repellent for me, regardless of whether Kinetic Effect wore ‘em for press shots circa. 1994.

We’re all preoocupied with all things rugged and old at present (I’m writing this in a pair of Mountain Lights), but progression can be necessary in military products. Boot design has taken vast leaps this decade taking chunks of tradition and performance breakthroughs too. I can only imagine the contempt anyone who’s signed up for combat would feel for the likes of me eulogising the aesthetics of army attire. I don’t care either. Specialist forums are riddled with reviews based on marches and tours of duty as well as a healthy contempt for posers. I speak only as a footwear fanboy. How many hoarders of Vans have touched a board in the last twenty years? The recent ALIFE 40 Below proves there’s plenty of life in the big boot movement, and those look pretty reserved compared to Nike’s offering.

Old styles like the German Para boot are a no-no, appropriated by too many trustafarians, but I firmly believe that the DNA of contemporary army footwear styles lie in two design classics – 1977s waterproof M77 boot from Alfa Skofabrik for the Norwegian army, still an army-issue there, and Israeli elite forces Commandos boots from Paladium with their hardwearing union of canvas and polyurethane.

Twinning an army desert boot upper with a sole that looks like the underrated Free Trail model, the faux-leather and polyester on the  SFB’s upper, approach to surface grip and flex, thermoplastic on the forefoot and real-leather/Kevlar protection lower down is an interesting adaptation of existing technologies.  They’re lightweight too as well as breathable, meaning trench foot chances are minimised. But a benefit to a serviceman but hinderance to a hipster doofus like me is that height. Those recoiling at the towering cut need to focus on what’s visible under denim – my aim wasn’t to rock them like a ‘Funk Your Head Up’ era Ultramagnetics affiliate, or to look like I’m making a field trip to Endor. Still, quick lacing or not, it’s a daily chore that’s a potential dealbreaker.

The chukka version might not fall in line with the full milspec intent, but after Hiroshi Fujiwara (who showcased a good black/purple high pair) and Hirofumi Kiyonaga got their hands on it, this tactical design was brought in line with their Uniform Experiment collection. I assumed that the UE ethos would omit anything quite this roughneck, but seemingly not. Trimmed down, it’s an easier wear, and black-on-black minimses any aesthetic concerns regarding the duality of a more rounded upper and futuristic jagged sole unit. It’s a less challenging wear, and one of the best things Nike have executed in years. I can forgive them for the ‘Year Of The Pig’ Air Max Footscape 360 and years of nondescript Max reworkings if standards remain this high.

Recently I’ve been taking a look at the army offerings from more conventional suppliers like Lowa, Belleville, Meindl, Garmont, Danner, 511, Zamberlan, Redback and Altberg. North Yorkshire’s Altberg rarely get the spotlight they deserve for their handcrafted output.

Quest’anno il tema dell’Azione Cattolica sarà “Lo accolse con gioia”. Un tema ricco e impegnativo, ma che ci è piaciuto anche per la sua capacità di toccare proprio tutte le fasce d’età.

Mica facile, l’accoglienza gioiosa! Pensiamo a quanto spesso di fronte a qualcosa che non conosciamo bene freniamo, inchiodiamo o accettiamo  un po’ con diffidenza.

È per questo che vogliamo ripartire da Zaccheo (Lc, 19, 1-10), che era piccolo di statura e impedito dalla folla, ma che voleva così tanto vedere Gesù da arrampicarsi su un albero per poi scendere in tutta fretta per accoglierlo. Vogliamo provare anche noi, a rispondere con quella forza alla Sua chiamata, a capire che siamo chiamati ma dobbiamo anche attivarci per rispondere!

Con ottobre quindi tutti i settori dell’AC si sono messi in moto, sui passi di Zaccheo.

Ad inizio ottobre sono ricominciati gli incontri del gruppo adulti sul tema dell’anno, che si tengono due volte al mese, di lunedì, in patronato. Il gruppo adulti, di cui forse non si sa molto, è un punto di collegamento fondamentale tra l’associazione, le famiglie, la società, che non è presente in tutte le parrocchie.

Poi è stata la volta del gruppo giovani, che quest’anno ha invece scelto di guardare alle radici della nostra fede, ripartendo dal confronto tra la religione cattolica e le altre religioni. Un tema che come giovani  abbiamo voluto fortemente, perchè pensiamo che sia attraverso il confronto che possiamo capire e vivere con più consapevolezza la nostra fede. E per vivere in un mondo che ci mette così tanto in discussione delle spalle un po’ più larghe fanno solo bene! Un percorso tosto, anche questo, in cui per fortuna siamo sostenuti e guidati da Don Roberto e Don Riccardo.

E poi sabato 24 ottobre l’ACR e i giovanissimi hanno fatto una partenza sprint, iniziando subito con una delle feste più importanti dell’anno, la festa del ciao!

Un “ciao” che ha visto riabbracci dopo l’estate, giochi, canti, bans e anche nuovi incontri e nuove amicizie… Per il gruppo di 1a superiore questo è stato poi un momento particolarmente importante: il passaggio da ACR ad ACG, sulla cui sponda sono arrivate a bordo di un’originale nave della vita…

I giovanissimi quest’anno penseranno ad “In-con-tra”re, vivendo nella società, con gli altri, in mezzo alla gente,  rimanendo con le orecchie alte per essere pronti all’incontro.

E l’ACR? Non è da meno!

L’Azione Cattolica dei Ragazzi quest’anno si è scoperta musicale e radiofonica con il motto “Siamo in onda”, che ci ricorda che trasmettiamo parole, gesti, esempi e fede. “Siamo in onda per comunicare la bellezza dell’amore che vive in noi”!

Ogni fascia d’età, insomma, ha il suo modo unico di accogliere con gioia…

The Mayo Clinic has a Facebook page. The Cleveland Clinic posts to YouTube. But the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG) has outdone them both.

Borrowing a page from Facebook and other social media, the ACG has launched its own social-professional networking site, and apparently is the first medical association to do so. It could have revolutionary implications in the long run for medical meetings.

Called ACG GI Circle — and currently accessible only to ACG members, not to nonmembers or the media — the site drew more than 800 subscribers on the first day of the annual meeting out of 4,000-some conference attendees, Dr. David A. Greenwald, a member of the ACG’s Board of Governors, said at a press briefing.

“It’s something that I think is very akin to Facebook,” he said. If you’re a gastroenterologist and don’t know what that means, find a teenager fast.

Participants can “request to connect” with another participant (the equivalent of “friending” on Facebook). Or you can connect with a group of participants (for instance if the Board of Governors created a group for its members). You can search by research topic or find abstracts from ACG meetings and leave comments for others to see and respond to.

A main role for the GI Circle is to supplement an individual’s experience at ACG conferences. “At a meeting like this, you can’t get to everything,” but you can see what you missed and interact with colleagues about those sessions through the GI Circle, Dr. Greenwald said. The site also could host a live presentation as a Webcast, with online discussions about it afterward.

I’m thinking this could be the beginning of the (very gradual) end of large medical meetings as we know them. As worldwide pressures increase for everyone to reduce their carbon footprints, meetings may attract regional attendees, with others “attending” online rather than traveling long distances. Dr. Greenwald said there’s been at least one trial of a regional meeting along those lines, but that model (fewer live attendees) could leave the conference organizers footing a larger share of expenses. So I don’t expect to see a rush to replace some meeting attendance with online participation, even if I think it may be inevitable.

Besides, Dr. Greenwald said, “Nothing replaces face-to-face contact.”

E nel frattempo ha cominciato il suo percorso anche il gruppo giovani.

Finalmente, non vedevamo l’ora!!!

Il gruppo giovani è una realtà che purtroppo non esiste in tutte le parrocchie, ed è un po’ un peccato perchè può essere uno spazio di confronto molto utile.

Se pensiamo che ci troviamo proiettati in un mondo in cui c’è sempre del vivo dibattito nella e sulla Chiesa e spesso siamo noi i primi a sentirci impreparati… beh, è ora di rimediare un pochino!

Nell’ultimo anno abbiamo sentito parlare di dibattito di scienza ed etica, di stato e chiesa, di tolleranza, accoglienza…

ABBIAMO BISOGNO DI CAPIRE… DI DIALOGARE…

Abbiamo deciso quindi di dedicare spazio al confronto tra la religione cattolica e le altre religioni, perché è dal confronto che secondo noi parte la consapevolezza e la conoscenza di se stessi.

Questo è quello di cui ci occuperemo nei primi tre incontri… Come vi sembra?

如果櫻花掉落的速度是秒速五厘米，那，兩顆心之間，卻又以怎樣的速度遠離著彼此？
是時間把距離拉遠，抑或是距離把時間變長？

新海誠2007年的動畫「秒速5センチメートル」。
新海誠延續了他一貫細膩的畫風、夢幻般的光影運用、真實的場景、富電影感的畫面，訴說出一個動人的故事。

動畫的副題是「a chain of short stories about their distance」，由「櫻花抄」、「コスモナウト」、「秒速5センチメートル」三個短篇構成的故事。
故事以男主角遠野貴樹作為敘事中心，以他初中、高中及出來社會工作後的三段故事，表達男主角對女主角篠原明里的感情。

第一段故事「櫻花抄」，是三個短篇中最感人的。
故事一開始，男女主角在一條櫻花紛飛的街道上，女主角跟男主角說：「你知道嗎？櫻花掉落的速度是每秒五厘米呢。不知道，我們下一年可以一起再看櫻花嗎？」
男女主角遠野貴樹與篠原明里，從小便因為父母工作的關係而常常轉校，二人在東京相遇，因為性情相近而成為青梅竹馬的好朋友。貴樹與明里許下了一起再看櫻花的承諾，誰知道爾後又因為父母之故而要分別搬往鹿兒島及枥木。明里先搬去了枥木，大家各自上了不同的中學，當貴樹知道自己也將要搬去鹿兒島時，在搬家前一星期，貴樹決定要與明里見面。
貴樹獨自乘坐火車往枥木，誰知遇上了大風雪，火車不斷誤點。在火車不斷誤點的等待中，貴樹第一次感覺到，原來距離是可以如此遠的。看著不斷流逝的時間和窗外漫天飛雪的曠野，過了約定的時間貴樹仍未到達枥木，他情願明里已經回家了，也不希望明里仍然在車站不安地等下去。
誰知道當貴樹來到枥木時，明里依然在等他。二人在車站候車室內，作簡單的交談和吃了明里做的便當。車站關門後，二人在漆黑的小路上走著，在雪地上留下了一個又一個的腳印。他們走到了明里在信中提及過的櫻花樹，雪花彷若化成了櫻花，二人的嘴唇互相印在一起。這個吻讓貴樹感覺彷彿十三年來的一切都與對方分享，但伴隨著這個吻而來的，是因為大家又要分別，遙遠的距離讓貴樹感覺無法盛載對方的愛而無限悲哀……

第二段故事「コスモナウト」(太空人)，是貴樹來到鹿兒島後，高中時的故事。
「遠野同學總是遠遠地望著前方，向著更遠的地方，不知道想抓著甚麼似的……」
貴樹來到鹿兒島後，同班同學澄田花苗從第一次見到貴樹便一直暗戀他至高中。花苗對貴樹有好感已久，但一直沒有勇氣表白。花苗喜歡滑浪，每次滑浪後總借故等候弓道部的貴樹，希望可以更接近他，與他一起回家。花苗看到貴樹不時打手機短訊，而班上的女同學亦斷言貴樹一定在東京有女朋友，花苗既感到好奇亦感到失望，但貴樹的溫柔，讓她無法自拔。
在快要畢業的時候，花苗為自己的前途和尚未表白的感情而感到迷惘。某天鹿兒島快要發射火箭時，花苗在回家路上的荒野遇上了貴樹。二人在荒野的談話讓花苗解開了心結，可是貴樹的心結卻沒有解開，貴樹雖然不時打手機短訊，卻一直不敢寄出。之後，當花苗鼓起勇氣向貴樹告白時，二人一起看到了火箭升空的情景。這時，花苗突然明白到，貴樹一直只是望著未知的遠方，根本從來沒有注視過她。花苗最後放棄了表白，但她知道，她在明天、後天甚至將來，仍會無可救藥地喜歡貴樹，只是貴樹也許就像太空人那樣，在火箭上以時速5分里，在漆黑的太空裡孤獨的前進，地球上的一切，包括花苗自己在內，都不在貴樹的視野之內……

第三段故事「秒速5センチメートル」，是點題作，內容是貴樹長大了出來社會工作後的故事。
「如果現在回頭過去的話，我深信對方也一定會回頭……」
明里與貴樹都已經長大成人，各有各的生活。貴樹高中畢業後，考上了東京的大學，之後在東京工作，在東京生活，曾有一位固定的伴侶，但最後還是與她分開了。貴樹某天終於發現，他一直努力著，但只是過著行屍走肉的生活，他根本忘記了自己為了甚麼而努力。
一個夢牽起了貴樹的記憶，十三歲那年與青梅竹馬的明里的約定：「甚麼時候我們再一起看櫻花？」於是，貴樹記起了那份他珍而重之的感情，他與明里在雪夜後分別，他一個人在回東京的火車上，他在心裡發誓，希望自己有守護明里的力量。十三歲的那個約定，是貴樹一直以來努力的動力，但隨著距離和時間的拉遠，他也漸漸忘記了。
當貴樹再次記起時，明里卻早已從過去重新出發，找到了合適的對象，將要結婚了。某天，貴樹再次在春天路過小時候與明里同行的坡道與火車的交匯點，那裡正是許下再一起看櫻花的承諾的地方。雖然在火車駛過後，馬路的另一邊再沒有明里在等他，但貴樹的微笑與開步向前方走，表現了他終於也能夠從過去裡走出來，重新出發。

動畫的最後，是山崎將義的「One More Time, One More Chance」。
1997年的作品，卻出奇地2007年的動畫配合。短短5分鐘的音樂與畫面，跳鏡的運用，男女主角的交錯，深刻地表現了雙方因為距離和時間而與對方遠離的無奈。

It’s been almost a year since we’ve started playing with social technology. Last winter, we created a prototype website that integrated Facebook functionality into news items and games, and today we’ve been proudly integrating the tech for our clients.

Our clients will be excited to learn that integration of social media into their web sites is now becoming standard practice for ACG. We have found that social media is a necessity for modern websites – SM is recognized as a vehicle to promote word-of-mouth, and must be considered in any marketing plan.

With the exception of industrial companies (and a few other niche markets), ACG encourages companies and organizations to use social media daily. Most importantly, social media is a cost-effective tool for analyzing public trends and opinion and forming closer relationships with customers. We encourage our clients to not underestimate its potential, and become intimate with its practices.
