Są na tym świecie wykonawcy, którzy zyskali dużą popularność, ale grają muzykę bez praktycznie żadnych wartości artystycznych. Jest to sprawa normalna, ludzie o tym wiedzą, co najmniej część naszej populacji ma świadomość badziewności takiej twórczości. Czasem jednak trafi się na rynku taki zespół/piosenkarz, który jest tak samo (lub niemalże tak samo) bezwartościowy, ale z różnych powodów zdobywa nie tylko popularność, ale też uznanie pewnych (szerszych) kręgów. To już jest sprawa zdecydowanie niefajna, dlatego też postanowiłem się nią zająć.

Jednym z bardziej popularnych aktualnie zespołów takiego pokroju są Red hot Chili Peppers. Zgadza się – rozpropagowali i nieco dopracowali brzmienie tzw. funk rocka. Na tym jednak ich zasługi się kończą, a Kiedis i reszta bandy męczą nas wtórnością swoich utworów już od zdecydowanie zbyt długiego czasu. Nie chcę tu przeprowadzać długiego i nudnego wywodu – marność RHCP ukażę wam na prostym przykładzie.

Otóż weźmy trzy utwory. Każdy z nich wykonuje inny wykonawca, każdy utrzymany jest w  z u p e ł n i e  innym stylu. Mamy acid rockowego Hendrixa, folk-rockowego Dylana i Williamsa z jego country. Możecie oczywiście owych utworów nie znać, więc nie wypiszę ich tytułów, tylko zarzucę odpowiednimi linkami.

A teraz przechodzimy do rzeczy. RHCP są znani z tego, że lubią wykonywać covery cudzych piosenek. Niestety ich niska ambicja muzyczna sprowadza owe, często bardzo różnorodne, utwory niejako do wspólnego mianownika. Mówiąc prościej: każdy kawałek brzmi w zasadzie tak samo. Przykłady? Proszę bardzo. Przypomnijcie sobie, jak brzmiały (skądinąd genialne) utwory zaprezentowane wyżej i…

Bardziej upodobnić do siebie tak rożnych kawałków już chyba się nie dało. Jedyne co je różni, to te elementy linii melodycznej, których fragmenty przetrwały proces coverowania. Ta sfera, gdzie w buciorach wleźli RHCP jest już w zasadzie zhomogenizowana. Wniosek? Red Hot Chili Peppers uzyskali popularność grając swojego funk rocka, nie potrafią jednak zaoferować niczego innego, zamknęli się w ciasnym, zbudowanym przez siebie pudełku. I ciągną to już od naprawdę długiego czasu. A wy wciąż uważacie ich za objawienie. Litości!

Odpierając zarzuty:
1) Tak, artykuł ten jest wybiórczy. Przecież nie zaprezentuję całych dyskografii czterech wykonawców, co nie?
2) Tak, jest to moja subiektywna opinia. Trudno żeby było inaczej…
3) Nie, RHCP nie są konsekwentni. Oni są ubodzy muzycznie.
4) Gdyby ktoś potrzebował innych przykładów, to może sięgnać chociażby po “They’re Red Hot”, które w oryginale wykonywał bluesman Robert Johnson.

Билли Миллер и Роки двигались в одном направлении и поэтому не удивительно, что в будущем их сотрудничество практически ниукого не вызвало удивления. Cold Sun были слишком “зелеными”, чтобы зачать панк-рок и слишком поздно ударились в психоделию, навсегда так и оставшись в андергаунде.
Альбом, который был записан в 1970 году был переиздан в 2008 на лейбле World In Sound на двенадцатидюймовке, бонусом к который шла десятидюймовка с композициями с EP и живые записи, записанными в 1972 году, которые естественно не вошли в оригинальный альбом. Также ремастированный альбом с бонус-треками (благодаря современному звуковому оборудованию) доступен сейчас и в CD-формате. Благодаря подпольщикам репутация альбома и самой группы устойчиво возрастала в течении прошлых двух десятилетий. Переиздание альбома показало миру музыки еще одних забытых классиков своего времени. Билли Миллер, который сейчас проживает в Калифорнии, записал большой материал с Роки и The Aliens, также недавно записав материал с Blood Drained Cows, с которыми даже ездит в туры. Также Билли в настоящее время в составе воссоединенных The Aliens совершает туры совместно с Powell St. John, оригинальным автором песен Elevators и человеком, которым является отцом рок-н-ролла в Техасе, сформировав Conqueroo. Молодая четверка психанутых ребят из Феникса (штат Аризона) просто обязана порадовать любителей современной психоделии в духе The Black Angels, The Warlocks и Wooden Shjips своей невороятно красивой мелодикой и кислотной атмосферой, уводящей за пределы реальности, меланхоличным вокалом и, по сути, такой же атмосферой. Получается такая вот удивительная слегка депрессивная, но, повторюсь, очень мелодичная смесь психоделического рока с уклоном в эйсид рок и, конечно же всё эту красоту еще больше приукрасит многими любимый ситар, щекочий слух отдаленно, на фоне. В инфлюенсах у музыкантов огромное количество групп, но именно их музыка вызвала у меня ассоциации с коллективами, которые я упомянул выше. У ребят на счету всего одна работа, которая вроде как уплыла в интеренет в свободное скачивание, но я на майспейсе ссылок не обнаружил, но один хороший человек (который посоветовал мне группу) поделился релизом. И, кстати, афишки у них отменные (их можно запалить на спейсе или в архиве с альбомом). Особенно крута триповая композиция Mother of All Living. Не пожалаете. Энжой!

The Rolling Stones – Citadel

Where Sgt. Pepper was a quintessentially British, somewhat satirical slap at conformity, the Stones’ rejoinder, Their Satanic Majesties Request was unabashedly savage. In this frequently covered riff-rock masterpiece, Jagger has been taken prisoner by the enemy. Candy and Cathy, wherever you are, if you ever existed at all, this one’s for you. The link above is an intriguing alternate take in a slightly more folk-rock vein.

I suppose there’s no typical way an album from Hoboken based band Yo La Tengo sounds like at this point, even 25 years into their career. Perhaps the one question a longtime Yo La Tengo listener may ask is, “Well, are there any long songs?” And why, yes, there are, three of them, in fact, that comprise the last three tracks on the record and account for over half of the 70 minute plus total running time. The first of these long songs, “More Stars Than There Are In Heaven,” is a lovely ballad that pairs its male and female vocals with a distorted guitar line that runs through the entirety of its 9 minute plus length. The other two tracks are mostly instrumental, the final track ending the album with a nearly 16 minute acid rock guitar jam. So that’s over half the album, time-wise. What about the first 9 tracks? They’re a blend of indie, psychedelic and garage rock, with some 60’s inspired pop and lounge numbers thrown in as well. In other words, it’s similar in approach to their two recent albums, with similarly excellent results, by and large. I could have done with at least one more rocker along the lines of “Nothing To Hide,” and generally speaking, Popular Songs doesn’t quite rise to the delirious heights of 2006’s I Am Not Afraid Of You And I Will Beat Your Ass, but it’s still good stuff. Standout cuts: “Here To Fall,” “Avalon Or Someone Very Similar,” “Nothing To Hide” and “Periodically Double Or Triple.”

I have read different interpretations of this song. Some say it is about Eric Clapton’s cocaine habit back in the 60s. Others say it relates to the Vietnam War. I think it is just about lost and lonely people, wandering the shadows. Great song whatever Cream intended.

Oh also during the line “Platform ticket, restless diesels, goodbye windows” I keep hearing it as “Platform dickhead”. Perhaps it is just me?

This is another great climax builder my siblings use to play on the record player when I was young. The slow rolling march of the snare drum in the beginning draws me in too. It always felt a little short though. Like there was room for more. I love it, and yet feel a bit unsatisfied at the end.

When I was young I though the song was “In a Garden of Evil”, though I know “In the Garden of Eden” was another popular misinterpretation. I am definitely one of those people who will make up lyrics if I cannot understand what they are singing, which then makes me look like an idiot when I happen to quote them to anyone else. I’m sure many of you have had the same experience.

At over 17 minutes, this song is a monument, or perhaps more accurately a foundation, for hard rock and heavy metal. I am frequently amazed as the creativity and artistry of the early rock artists of the 60’s and how they literally created styles and genres of music single handedly that where unlike anything before. I think Iron Butterfly is a perfect example. So cool.

Hier mal eine Liste von Jefferson Airplane Liedern, die jeder kennen sollte, Sommerzeit rückt heran, die meisten Stücke sind von Grace Slick gesungen, quasi die Höhepunkte schlecht hin von JP. Außerdem kann ich jedem die Scheibe “Grace Slick and the Great Society – Collectors Item” ans Herz legen, dabei handelt es sich um eine wirklich sehr gute Live Aufnahme aus den 60iger Jahren und alle Lieder sind von der guten Frau gesungen, eine KILLER Stimme, die heute noch viele in den Schatten stellt. Auf der Live Aufnahme befinden sich außerdem die Original Version von Somebody to Love und White Rabbit, gerade letzters weiß mit seinem “psychedelic Overkill” Interludium dermaßen zu überzeugen, dass man quasi hört wie die Instrumente schmelzen.

As a music writer, I try to avoid excessive hyperbole, unlike say, the British press, who seem to trumpet the next big thing in music every week. That said, let me say that I think the new album, Touchdown, from UK band Brakesbrakesbrakes (just Brakes outside the US) is absolutely in the running for indie pop album of the year. The 12 tracks included blow by in a whirl of all manner of rock, acid, garage, psychedelic and punk included, with some country, folk and 60’s inspired pop thrown in as well. There’s also some decidedly eccentric and often quite amusing lyrical content going on at times, too. (One example: “Don’t Take Me To Space (Man),” in which the singer pleads not to be abducted by aliens as he’s found true love on Earth). The band, made up of members of British Sea Power, Electric Soft Parade and the Tenderfoot, were pretty much on fire with indie pop inspiration with this one, and while other more weighty, “important” albums may be released this year, few will be as pleasurable to listen to as Touchdown. Standout cuts: “Two Shocks,” “Don’t Take Me To Space (Man),” “Hey Hey” and “Why Tell The Truth (When It’s Easier To Lie).”

The more I’ve listened to Dark Days/Light Years, the new release from Welsh band Super Furry Animals, the more I’ve appreciated the nutty pop brilliance that invigorates so much of the album. Over the course of an hour and twelve tracks, the band fuses acid rock, shoegaze, electronica, sunny 60’s pop and blissed out psychedelic jams into an almost improbably entertaining and addictively listenable batch of music. To paraphrase a Last FM listener, the Super Furry Animals are one of the few bands that could write a song about trams and then have it as their first single: “Let us celebrate this monumental progress / We have reduced emissions by seventy-five per cent…” Dark Days/Light Years is a great funhouse of an album, multilayered and often epic in scale, a record to get lost and found in again and again. Standout cuts: “Mt,” “Inaugural Trams,” “Cardiff In The Sun” and “The Very Best Of Neil Diamond.”
