An article I read recently discusses the results of testing several of the top browsers on PC and Mac platforms and particularly, how they rendered fonts. Safari rated poorly in this department but fared strongly in some other areas. The 2 browsers that scored the highest in these tests were Opera’s latest version for Windows (9.63) as well as the latest version of Firefox (3.0) for Windows. IE was still the favorite among many mainly due to it’s clear-type font presentation.

In addition, Vista out performed Mac with most browsers when it came to font rendering. I personally believe that the font style has a great deal to do with it, some appear better than others on various platforms. The Acid2 project testing continues and involves many facets, i.e. rendering speed, so the results are not definitive at this point in time.

I’m looking at you, Johan. Read this carefuly.

So, if the first question that came to your head when you saw the title is “What plight?” you are likely using Internet Exploder. What exactly do web designers have for problems, there are new versions of CSS, SVG graphics are becoming more common, and flash is getting more advanced all the time along with browser capabilities. So we can do more, right? We can make more exciting and interesting designs, can’t we? And the average screen size is getting bigger all the time, allowing us to use the excess of space…
Right?

No. Why not? Internet Explorer. Especially version 6. It does not support the latest CSS standards, it does not pass an acid2 test, let alone acid3. It doesn’t even support .GIF or .PNG transparancy. Yeah. For n00bs, that means that it basically is not capable of displaying a modern web page. This leaves us with 3 options:

1. Use Javascript libraries to fix it.

This can be used, for example, to make even Internet Exploder 6 display full, 8 bit PNG transparancy. Unfortunately, these libraries are not in widespread use, (Which makes getting support for them very difficult) and they slow the webpage down. A lot.

2. Dumb our pages down to an Internet Exporer 6 level.

This way, it’ll work with everything, seeing as IE6 is the lowest still in widespread use, but there are several disadvantages. Like that our designs can’t be as dynamic or complicated as we want. And it takes hours to make a design IE6 compatible because of IE’s quirks.

3. Leave out older browsers completely.

I wouldn’t put this past myself. Why work for IE when you can use PHP to leave out IE entirely? Just make it display a message like “Go get a real browser, you loser.”
So the next time you start up IE, I want you to go to http://www.firefox.com/ . Download Firefox. Use it. You can’t say you don’t have a reason.

And, I guess, lots of people, all over the world,, are punching keys franticaly as we ’speak’ , to test it.

Here is my contribution to the buzz. How does the new browser behave in terms of standards compatibility? Let’s take the tests.

ACID2 gives

Which means 100% compatibility.

ACID3 gives :

which means 78% compliance. Were it 100% it should look like this:

How do these results compare to the browsers on the market? I have run the same test on all the known browsers that pass the ACID2 test and here are the results. All the test were run on a Windows XP with SP2.

Browser (version)

ACID2

ACID3

IE (8.0.6001)

100%

12%

Firefox (3.0.1)

100%

71%

Safari (3.0.4)

100%

41%

Opera (9.52)

100%

83%

Chrome

100%

78%

So Chrome does a fairly good job in ACID3, but still trails Opera.

Update: I just spotted an article on CNET about Chrome’s standards compliance.Instead of comparing IE8 it compares IE7 on the Acid3 test and gives a result of 14% which I could not confirm. The acid servers were very slow to respond but when they did I just got a 12% as in IE8.

As of quite recently, word of Google’s new browser, Google Chrome, has made its rounds of the

As of quite recently, word of Google’s new browser, Google Chrome, has made its rounds of the internet, inspiring both hype and hatred. What’s so special about Chrome? Well, see for yourself. Don’t bother wondering if Chrome is a good browser; it is. Don’t even bother asking if it’s better than Firefox, because, well, it’s really hard to say, and it’s not even an important question. The real question is whether Google Chrome is going to be successful. How much of the browser market will Google control by the end of this year? 1%? 10%? 50%? Right now it’s hard to say.

On the surface, Chrome doesn’t feel much different from our beloved Firefox 3. Sure, it looks a little funny (and very blue), but it handles much the way any normal browser does. It has a phishing/malware blacklist, just like Firefox, a download manager, tabbed browsing, and a “smart” address bar that does everything under the sun.

Chrome does sport a couple features that set it ahead of Firefox: multiprocessing for tabs, a super-quick Javascript virtual machine, and a task manager. So are people going to be leaping out of their chairs to download Google Chrome? Or will it sputter and die because Firefox is “good enough” for most people? I managed to convert my mother from IE7 to Firefox 3 not by telling her how much better Firefox is, but by telling her that you don’t have to put up with any crap in Firefox. That is, she was converted not because Firefox is so good, but because it doesn’t suck.

So I feel like much of Google’s potential market for Chrome is already taken and unwilling to make a change. Why should someone want to change from one perfectly good browser to another that they’ve never used before? Multiprocessing might seem neat to us techies, but to average Joe it’s not that important.

In light of this, we have to wonder how much effort Google will spend advertising their browser. Harry McCracken asks a good question:

Just how hard will Google push Chrome on the Google homepage? Like no other company on earth, Google has an opportunity to get hundreds of millions of people using its browser in a relatively short amount of time. You gotta think that it’ll use the Google homepage to drum up interest. But will it check to see if you’re using IE, Firefox, or another browser and attempt to convince you to switch?

Currently, the Google homepage displays nothing at all related to Chrome (Edit: Nevermind, it’s up there now – 9/03). Of course, hype has done a significant amount of advertising for them (sounds hypocritical, but I’m a Google fanboy, so I don’t mind).

I’d love to report on Chrome’s performance in the Acid2 and Acid3 tests, but they’re either down or operating very slowly right now, perhaps because everyone thinks like I do. Edit: Chrome seems to pass Acid2 and scores a 79/100 on Acid3.

I should be in bed: I’m pretty tired and am fighting another kidney-related bug (but the good news is that the antibiotics do appear to be kicking in), but I just wanted to check in and say this:

Mozilla Firefox 3.0 is pretty fantastic.

I have to be honest, I was a little hesitant about upgrading. It’s not that I wasn’t looking forward to checking it out — I’d tried out v.3.0 beta 5, and v.3.0 RC1 after all. It’s just that I really do rely on a number of key add-ons for my everyday browsing and Web development.

I needn’t have worried. At work 1/20 didn’t work with Firefox 3, and at home it was 2/17. The offending add-ons were “Tails” (a microformats add-on) and “X-Ray” (which shows HTML tags in the page). Nothing show-stopping, nothing that couldn’t be replaced with something else or dropped.

Firefox 3 is so much faster, both loading and rendering pages. The new features on the address bar are fantastic. My only niggle is that I really don’t like the default theme. I loved the chunky look of versions 1.0.x, 1.5.x and 2.x. So I’m using CrystalFox Modern until someone ports the old theme to version 3!

Oh, and it passes the Acid2 test and scores 71/100 on Acid3.

But hey! if that’s my only criticism of Fx3 then they must be doing something pretty darned well!

Right, now I’m off to bed!

This about face marks a change from their previous stance which would have been to render pages exactly as IE7 did, and only render pages in their super-duper-standards-compliant mode if a special META tag were present (or HTML 5 doctype were supplied).

This is, for many reasons, amazing news. For the first time in, well, ever, Microsoft is taking an extremely strong stance on pushing the envelope on the web in a way that doesn’t alienate it’s biggest proponents. From their press release1 released today:

“This is obviously a complex issue, with important considerations on both sides,” Ozzie said. “On one hand, there are literally billions of Web pages designed to render on previous browser versions, including many sites that are no longer actively managed. On the other hand, there is a concrete benefit to Web designers if all vendors give priority to interoperability around commonly accepted standards as they evolve. After weighing these very legitimate concerns, we have decided to give top priority to support for these new Web standards. In keeping with the commitment we made in our Interoperability Principles of being even more transparent in how we support standards in our products, we will work with content publishers to ensure they fully understand the steps we are taking and will encourage them to use this beta period to update their sites to transition to the more current Web standards supported by IE8.”

The other day I was reading about the Acid2, which is a browser test to see how close your browser comes to meeting the web standards.

From what I know the web standards is a huge list of guidelines, rules and recommendations on how a browser should render various elements and tags. With that in mind I was assuming after taking the Acid 2 test I was hoping to see a long list of the various guidelines with a result saying whether my browser succeeded or failed in that particular test, however after visiting the url I was surprised to see a smiley smiling back at me. It took me about a minute to realize that the fully formed smiley meant that my browser cleared the Acid 2 test. (Kudus to Safari and Opera).
