I hear and see a lot of debate on how you should keep your fruit consumption to a minimum. However, its mainly objection on the amount of sugars fruit contains and how the acidity strips away tooth enamel. This is partly true to a certain degree but first you have to know that fruits have varying levels of acidity and they can be no worse then if you were to have a bottle of Coke.

Citric acid does not have a strong enough effect in the body, so once the alkalising minerals have become metabolised this has an alkaline affect. Fruits like Oranges, Pineapples, Apples, Lemons and Strawberries all have a PH of 5 and below but it doesn’t matter about the level of acidity, the amount of nutrients they contain, as your only worry should be the effect it gives you once eaten.

Fruits have a reasonably significant volume of fructose (natural sugar) that some people think can be bad for the teeth; however, sugar is an essential carbohydrate in order to sustain human life and the alkaline forming result of fruits will likely prevent type Two diabetes.

One other thing I need to warn you about are heavily processed fruits. Pineapples in cans and fruits salads in plastic holders, undergo almost the same manufacturing process as processed foods. They’re extremely high in unnatural sugars and lose some of there alkaline effect becoming acid forming, so if you need to stock up on fruit make sure it’s wholesome and fresh.

Also, don’t just rely on consuming fruits as the main part of your diet. This is all well and good but if your not eating the leafy greens then I’m afraid it’s going to be so much harder to reach that alkalized state.

Today I bought Almond Milk for the first time. It’s delicious and I’m glad I bought it! I am trying to slowly decrease my intake of dairy products because I heard that eating dairy can make allergies worse. I had a friend who went to a voice pathologist for her allergies, and the doctor gave her a list of things that she should and should not eat to decrease some of the phlegm. Dairy products were on the shouldn’t eat list, and acidic fruits were on the should eat list. Interesting, no?

Personally, I am going to have to keep eating yogurt because I am on antibiotics so much. I need to keep getting some good bacteria into my body! My favorite is greek yogurt. So good, and full of protein!

It’s not like I drink a ton of milk, or even eat a lot of cheese, but I’m going to try to start noticing the effect cutting down on dairy will have on my allergies. As of right now, I am still swimming in phlegm from the sinus infection, but it’s getting better!

Has anyone else had good results with their allergies through cutting back on dairy or completely removing it from their diet?

There’s still plenty of summertime left. In many parts of the country, September is simply gorgeous

There’s still plenty of summertime left. In many parts of the country, September is simply gorgeous – still warm, but a better chance for cool breezes. A perfect time of year for outdoor barbecues. Neighbors are sure to be attracted to the smell of hot dogs, steaks and hamburgers grilling in your backyard.

As you enjoy your late summer barbecue, remember to baby your stomach. A frequent complaint is heartburn, a painful condition caused by acid that moves from the stomach to the esophagus. Stress, smoking, aging, and obesity are among factors that can contribute to “acid reflux.” If you suffer from heartburn two or more days per week, you have “frequent heartburn.”

In an e-mail interview with Men and Health, It’s a Guy Thing, Dr. Michael G. Rahmin, board certified internist and gastroenterologist at The Valley Hospital in Ridgewood, New Jersey, says, “Heartburn is often described as a painful, burning sensation in the lower chest, behind the breastbone, that often happens after eating. The feeling can last from a few minutes to several hours.”

Rahmin says you should examine the types of food that you eat. Acidic fruits, fried and oily foods, onions, peppers, highly-spiced foods, fatty meats, chocolate, coffee and mints can contribute to heartburn. There’s also a chance you’ll get heartburn if you eat within three hours of going to sleep.

Heartburn should not be ignored. Don’t think you can spend a lifetime popping antacids without having any thought of your digestive system. Rahmin, who also has a private practice in the New Jersey area, says, “In some cases, the acid reflux that causes heartburn can lead to changes in the lining of the esophagus, which is a serious condition and requires the care of a physician.”

Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs), H2 blockers and antacids are among the possible medications to discuss with your doctor. They each work in a different way, says Rahmin. “PPIs are specifically indicated for treating frequent heartburn. The most recent PPI to receive FDA approval for over-the-counter use is Zegerid OTC, which offers 24-hour relief for frequent heartburn with one dose a day as part of a 14-day course of treatment.” Rahmin cautions that, “as with any over-the-counter heartburn medicine, you should thoroughly read the label before deciding whether the product is right for you, and stop use and ask a doctor if you need to take one of these products for more than 14 days.”

Rahmin has advice for baby boomers, in particular. “While young at heart, boomers need to recognize that their digestive tracts aren’t as forgiving as they once were. More than any generation, boomers want to enjoy life and, for most, there is no reason to write off any food category, particularly in moderation. But even with a watchful diet, some may need medication to help keep stomach acid under control.”

Some great food for thought as you plan your late summer picnics and barbecues.

Information about coffee and cocoa: Coffee is acidic… and cocoa neutralizes the acidity of cof

Information about coffee and cocoa:
Coffee is acidic… and cocoa neutralizes the acidity of coffee.

COFFEE is good for health. It can stop headaches and prevent disease.
Coffee contains caffeic acid and chlorogenic acid. And it neutralizes
chemicals in the blood: chemicals that cause disease.
Relieves headaches caused by alkaline chemicals (detergents ammonia etc).
Coffee neutralizes airborne chemicals that can inflame the heart lungs and other organs.
Also, black coffee after a cigarette could protect the heart from the alkaline
chemical additives in tobacco.

For medicinal use, it is best to use black coffee. Because milk and sugar reduce the acidity of coffee. After 10-15 minutes, you can use cocoa or chocolate to reduce the acidity of blood.

COCOA and chocolate can be used after meals and snacks. To neutralize acidic foods, like an anti-acid. After acidic foods: such as Apples Cranberries Citrus fruits
citric acid Tomatoes Black pepper Spices Coffee and alcohol. Except vinegar.
Cocoa neutralizes the acidity of alcohol. And may prevent liver damage. It also protects the heart and other organs.

The coffee bean (acidic) and the cocoa bean (alkaline) are like opposite twins.
Cocoa cancels the acidity of coffee. Chocolate can be used after coffee,
to stop the bad effects of coffee. When you have the jitters, it means
that your blood is too acidic. And chocolate is the best cure.

“The jitters could be a sign of internal inflammation… inflammation of tissue and organs caused by airborne chemicals. Therefore, the body is less able to tolerate the acidity of coffee and other foods.”

Cocoa is the only food that neutralizes the acidity of coffee.
And other acidic foods and spices. And, oat milk can be used after chocolate,
to further reduce the acidity of the blood.

TIP FOR COFFEE LOVERS: After coffee, have a piece of dark chocolate. And have chocolate
or hot chocolate before bed. Cocoa is alkaline, and it neutralizes the acidity of coffee. It stops and prevents the jitters. You remain alert and feel calm. The jitters is caused by the acids in coffee, not the caffeine.

You can have coffee anytime, at any hour of the day or night. Have dark chocolate before bed, and you sleep like a baby.
