Injuries are a common thing in sports; it’s something that is a concern to every athlete. You have athletes missing games due to torn ACLs, lower body injuries, upper body injuries, cases of the flu and mild body strains to name a few. Then there are some more interesting injuries. Take for example Ottawa Senators’ goalie Pascal Leclaire; he was sitting on the bench during Monday night’s game when the puck was cleared into the Sens’ bench and hit Leclaire in the face. He will be out of action for 4 weeks with a fractured cheekbone, what a shame. With that being said, let’s look back at some of the most bizarre sports injuries that we as fans have been privy to make fun of:

10. Derrick Rose- The Apple Knife

“It was a silly incident,” Rose said. “I was cutting up some food and I laid on a knife getting lazy in bed. I went to go get a bottle of water, came back, forgot the knife was there, then sat down and sliced my arm.”

9. Rickey Henderson -Frost Bite

When an athlete hurts a foot or hand they’ll occasionally use an ice pack. The one problem Rickey had is that he slept with it on his foot and woke up hours later to realize he had frost bite. Oh Rickey!

Rickey Henderson..with a warm foot

8. Plaxico Burris- Shooting One’s Self

We all know the story. Football star. Gun. Bad ending. Plaxico was in a nightclub with a handgun in his pocket. Something happens (we’ll never know the truth) but it’s revealed he shot himself in the leg and due to having an illegal weapon he’s suspended by the league and could face time in jail. Did nobody inform Plaxico of what a holster was?

7. Joel Zumaya- Guitar Hero

The Tigers were entrenched in the 2006 ALCS when relief pitcher Joel Zumaya had to sit a few games due to the inflammation in his wrist and forearm…due to Guitar Hero. Is that what they’re calling it now?

6. Sammy Sosa- Sneezing

We’ve all sneezed. Some have been light sneezes and some have been so hard that they hurt. Well Sammy Sosa had a case of the bad sneezes and was forced to be out of the lineup due to back spasms.

Bless you Sammy

5. John Smoltz- Ironing

Atlanta Braves Pitcher John Smoltz missed a few games due to a burn he caused while ironing his shirt. John denies the report but it’s rumoured he was wearing the shirt in question while ironing it. Seriously what is wrong with athletes?

4. Joe Sakic- Snow Blower

Colorado Avalanche center and captain Joe Sakic was doing what every other Colorado resident does on their property. He was snow blowing. Hopefully the residents are a bit more cautious than Joe who ended up breaking three fingers and causing tendon damage due to his inability to control the snow blower.

3. Jimmie Johnson- Golf Cart

Jimmie Johnson had just won an unprecedented 4th straight NASCAR championship. At a golf tournament, Jimmie thought it would be fun to ride on top of the golf cart. Naturally, he fell off and broke his wrist. Stick to racing the automobiles Jimmie!

Jimmie Johnson inside the Golf Cart...where he should be!

2. Bill Gramatica- Field Goal

One thing the Gramatica brothers (Bill and Martin) and fellow NFL kickers do is over exagerate the celebrations. Bill Gramatica kicked a 46 yard field goal in the first half for the Arizona Cardinals in 2001 to give his team a 3-0 lead. Gramatica jumped up in celebration (like he just won a Super Bowl) and tore his ACL upon landing . He missed the rest of the season

1. Gus Frerotte- Headbutt

In 1997, Gus Frerotte decided to bang his head into the padded wall behind the end zone after his TD rush, and missed the rest of a key game with neck pains and a concussion

Really digging these dirty bucks. Perfect color combined with that brick sole. And of course, there’s the Billykirk canvas briefcases. Those guys do no wrong.

Aaron Kampman (OLB) and Al Harris (CB) are both out for the rest of the season with serious knee injuries. Each man was injured during the Packers win over the 49ers.The loss of two veteran defensive players is going to really hurt the Packers. Kampman and Harris were both pro-bowl defenders.

Still, it will now be up to some of the younger backups to step in and try to fill those roles. Players to watch for: Tramon Williams playing in place of the injured Al Harris, and Brad Jones – a rookie OLB. I’m not exactly sure who the Packers will be using in place of Kampman yet – most likely it will be a rotation between Brandon Chillar, Brady Poppinga and Brad Jones.

Also, the Eagles squeaked out a victory over the Bears last night 24-20, so they are also now tied for a wild card spot with both Green Bay and New York (Giants). So as Packers fans, we should also be rooting for teams that play against the Eagles and the Giants. Can’t wait for Thursday’s game, and I’ll be wearing my fatty pants for the Turducken.

According to a report by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinal’s Greg Bedard, Eagles fans’ former whipping boy Al Harris is out for the year with a torn ACL.

Bedard reports that a website owned by Harris’ agent posted the information.

While Harris was known as “a walking 15-yard penalty” during his days in Philly, the man is a legit No. 1 corner in the league. His loss is huge for the packers, and will definitely impact their ability to make a run at a wild card slot.

My girlfriend first raised this topic with me ages ago and I thought it was so true–and humoro

My girlfriend first raised this topic with me ages ago and I thought it was so true–and humorous–that I’m recycling it for today’s topic. Thank you, LEJS.

What I don’t understand today are ambiguous deodorant names. I went to my local Meijer store several weeks ago and perused the aisles just to get a handle on what companies like Old Spice and Adidas are trying to communicate with these names. I’ve decided that they:

1. …are largely trying to capture a sentiment. I get that. I understand that a high-school senior might think the best underarm protection for him–especially during football season–would be something called, “Game Day.” But how, exactly, does that describe the scent?? It doesn’t. Game Day means grass, sweat, dirt, and potentially a bloody nose or torn ACL.

Old Spice and Adidas scents that fit this category: Swagger [?!], Showtime, Pure Sport, After Hours [again...what?!], Control, Pure, Intensive, Sport Fever [should not remind you of the SNL "Da Bears" skit, I hope. Because that would mean it smells like obese men smoking cigars and sweating on a basement couch with a bucket of chicken wings.]

2. They are trying to sell something you long for, usually relating to freedom in nature. Case in point: Aqua Reef. Seriously, a reef smells like shark poo and salt. Is that what they’re selling me?? Others I’m putting in this category are: Pacific Surge, Arctic Force, Fresh Blast, Mountain Fresh, etc.

Lastly, in this vein, I’ll discuss a candle name I came across on our beloved trip to the casino this past October. Sure, maybe it is a challenge to come up with appropriate and inspiring fragrance titles for candles, but tell me. Does “Denim Breeze” [in a casino, mind you] make you want to hand over $18 to have your house smell like DENIM?

“Denim Breeze” says to me:

1. …stinky, smoky Toughskins in which a truck driver regularly farts

2. …jeans drying on the clothesline–maybe?? Although “denim” doesn’t evoke anything cozy and romantic like “Linen Breeze” would. It’s a kindergarten teacher’s jumper. An unfortunate basement sectional. 1980’s decor. Bad.

3. …again, it’s too close to wind, as in passing it. Through your demin.

I’d love to hear your favorite ambiguous scent names! Make shopping more fun by scouting out the ridiculous and reporting back Share them here or post them on my Facebook page.

Yep, a one night trip! Every year since I have lived in Austin, I have attended ACL music festival.

Yep, a one night trip!

Every year since I have lived in Austin, I have attended ACL music festival. I have braved dust storms incited by Hurricane Rita, temperatures that essentially turned everyone’s clothes into towels and even beer that costs way more than it should. All of this I braved gladly, in order to hear awesome music and be with my wonderful friends for three days. But for some reason this year Chris and I calculated the cost and it turns out we spend somewhere in the $500 range on that weekend. And we just could not part with this sum. Plus the line-up was not as good as it had been in the past.

Getting out of Dodge

Knowing we would be tempted to spend money on after shows or even at the last minute buy an over-priced ticket from scalpers, I decided we should just leave town. And so that’s what we did. My aunt bought us an awesome tent for our wedding, so we decided to go camping. After some research we settled on Garner State Park, about two and a half hours away from Austin, on the Frio River.

Despite a dire weather report, indicating rain showers ahead, we got into my stuffed Santa Fe and headed south on I-35 toward our destination. We decided to make it an adventure and eat at a recommended German restaurant in New Braunfels called Friesenhaus. For people who do not know much about the Hill Country of Texas, it’s full of German and Czech restaurants and bakeries. And it’s usually very authentic and tasty. Friesenhaus was no different. The family, who owns the restaurant, actually moved to Texas from Germany in 2005. Near the hostess stand is a shop full of German food goods as well as traditional German clothes. It was very interesting to see this in the middle of Texas.

But How is the Food?

So we established the surrounding were interesting, but you are probably asking, how was the grub? Well, the meal started off on a bad foot. We arrived five minutes past 11 a.m. and they would not serve us breakfast. I was completely bummed. I had scoped out the menu online and wanted the German apple pancakes. So it was kind of a weird taste bud switch I had to do when I ordered split pea soup and cheese and vegetables plate. Chris ordered the gulasch soup and the potato pancakes.

Cheese and Veggie Plate

While Chris and I were sad we did not get to order breakfast, we came away from our meal satisfied. The food was very authentic and there were even a few people drinking beers in the a.m. So it really did feel like we were in Europe.

Next Stop: Mexico

Ok, well not really. But Garner State Park is only a few hours from the Mexican border, so we were kind of close. What a day – Austin in the morning, Germany in the afternoon and Mexico at night.

Anyway, we arrived at Garner in the late afternoon, and it was indeed a little drizzly. But no downpour. We put together our tent and campsite. We grabbed our doggie Olive and set out to do some hiking. Garner has a number of great trails offering wonderful scenic views. The first trail we tried was the Foshee trail going by the Painted Rock. This trail was marked as pretty easy and I have to tell you, I was sweating and it felt like I was walking straight up. So a word of warning, it was pretty hard.

Chris and Olive Posing on the Trail

Cloud Forest

I might have also been sweating profusely because of the dense humidity up on the trails. It was markedly wetter and heavier up on the trails. There was dew on all the plants, it reminded me a bit of a cloud forest type of environment.

The Frio River

One of the biggest bonuses to Garner is that it’s right on the Frio River. Most of the people we chatted with before going raved about the tubing and kayaking on the crystal clear body of water. Well, unfortunately for us, we had been in a drought and the water was not deep enough for much of anything – except for Olive to play fetch in.

Olive Ahearn Nugent Enjoying the Frio

Hiking Day 2

I know many of you are used to this blog being about food and this is not a food-heavy entry. I hope that’s ok. Because we basically did not cook anything exciting while camping and I did not feel the need to photograph beanie weanies and smore’s. Both were awesome though!

But we did do a lot of hiking. The second day we hiked on the Old Horse Trail. Which was definitely not as hard as the Foshee. It was a pretty easy trail that ran near the highway.

In Case You Don't Believe Me

View from the Trail

After hiking a couple more hours Chris, Olive and I got back into our stuffed car and headed back to Austin. Just to find out that rain had flowed in Austin while we were gone. The pictures from ACL looked like a muddy, horrible mess. I think this was a good year to sit it out.

Here is an excerpt from a great article that I found from the NCSA:

Several injury prevention programs exist that are aimed at placing female athletes into safer biomechanical postures (4).

Altering specific aspects of jumping, landing, and changing direction have been the primary targets of these injury interven-
tion programs. The most common techniques are to: 1) change ‘stiff’ landings into ‘soft’ landings by having athletes bend
their hips and knees upon landing from a jump; 2) make athletes consciously aware of maintaining proper knee alignment
upon landing from double leg and single leg landings; and 3) replace the one-step stop or change in direction with multiple,
small steps. These simple modifications will improve biomechanical aspects of many common movements found in soccer,
volleyball, and basketball. In addition, by modifying biomechanical aspects of landing from jumps, beneficial alterations in
neuromuscular firing patterns occur that allow the hamstrings to assist in stabilizing the knee joint, thus reducing …. Go HERE for the rest of the article.

This is my knee story. It was my junior year of high school. Midway through the soccer season and 20

This is my knee story. It was my junior year of high school. Midway through the soccer season and 20 minutes into the first half, I had a breakaway on goal. However, just before shooting on goal, a defender was able to get a touch on the ball knocking it away. Instead of making contact with the ball, I made contact with his leg. In doing so, I hyper-extended my right knee. As I was carried off the field, I knew something was not right. However, after 10 minutes of ice and a shot of endorphins, the knee felt great. I felt great. I was ready to go back in.

As I recall, I proceeded to have a great game … amazing what some endorphins will do. But it all came to an explosive end five minutes before the end of the game. I went up for a header, landed awkwardly on my right leg and BOOM! My knee, and more specifically, my ACL exploded. For those of you unfortunate enough to have had a similar experience, you know the sound I’m talking about. I still can’t believe no one else heard the explosion.

Since the knees were never designed to take the twisting, torquing, cutting, and physical demands associated with soccer, many soccer players have their own knee story or stories. There is a very good chance that if a soccer player plays soccer long enough, the knees will sustain some type of trauma or injury. Because of this likelihood and based on my own experience, I believe knee injuries need to be addressed in a special way.

When I coached, I had the following rule: when a player sustained any type of knee injury, whether it was a ‘knock’, a small tweak, or slight hyper-extension, he or she was done for two weeks. It did not matter how good the player was, what important games were coming up, or how well the player was moving around or feeling; he or she was not allowed to practice or play for two weeks. No ifs, ands, or buts!

Besides not playing, I also asked the parents of the injured player to do the following:

Start icing the knee immediately–20 minutes on, 20 minutes off.

Take their child to see a doctor, preferably an orthopedic surgeon, within a few days of the injury. If the injury looked bad, I would recommend the emergency room.

Stress to their child the importance of resting the knee during school–no recess or lunchtime high-jinks.

As a coach, if you chose to follow this rule or already have a similar rule, you will undoubtedly deal with players pleading with you that they are fine and parents who are positive you are overreacting. No matter. You are doing what is in the best long-term interest of the player. Make sure to share this rule with players and parents at the beginning of the season so there are no surprises.

Author’s Note: Though this post is about knees, I believe any leg injury should be treated with precaution. Ankle, heel, toe, calf, hamstring, quadriceps, or groin injuries should all require some type of rest as well as a professional exam. Having a player play with any type of leg injury that has not had time to heal could have negative long-term consequences. At the youth level, compromising any one of these leg parts is simply not worth it.

Remember when the Raptors took some heat for bringing in an injury-plagued Jermaine O’Neal prior to last season? I found it pretty funny, because nobody seemed to blink an eye when the Sixers gave a five-year, $80 million contract to Elton Brand, who missed 74 games the prior season due to a torn ACL. Sure, O’Neal didn’t pan out in Toronto, but the Raps were able to ship him to the Heat for Shawn Marion, who Bryan Colangelo rather nicely turned into Hedo Turkoglu this past summer. The Sixers? Well, they’re still stuck with Brand.

Brand, who failed to mesh with Andre Iguodala early last season in Philly before bowing to shoulder surgery in January, has been an absolute trainwreck: In last night’s 119-115 loss to the Suns, the big man spent the entire fourth quarter on the bench, finishing with 10 points and two boards. In seven games, he’s averaged 10.1 and 5.6 and 0.9 blocks, down from career averages of 19.9, 10.1 and 2.1.

I forget where I read it, but when Toronto picked up O’Neal last year, someone mentioned that historically, once the numbers of a big start declining, they’re finished. J.O. is a fine example, though Brand looks to be poster boy for that theory. And Philly is on the hook for that contract.

Of course, this just adds Brand to the growing list of NBA players with bad contracts. Every team has a couple, I suppose. Still, next time you sit and complain about Marcus Banks contract at the end of the Raptors bench, just remember, it could be worse.

The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is a major stabilizing knee ligament. It is a tough, non-stretc

The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is a major stabilizing knee ligament. It is a tough, non-stretchable rope-like structure that connects the thighbone (femur) to the leg bone (tibia). There are two cruciate ligaments that crisscross in the knee joint. The ACL attaches “anterior” (in front) to the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL). The ACL is more commonly injured than the PCL, and ACL tears more commonly require surgery. Although the surgery is often referred to as an ACL repair it is more appropriately called and ACL reconstruction (see below).

Patients often tear the ACL by changing direction rapidly (e.g. cutting or pivoting), slowing down from running and twisting with one foot planted or hyper-extending the knee when landing from a jump. It is less common to have a direct injury to the knee where another person or object lands on the knee causing the ACL to tear.

Most patients will report hearing a knee pop when their ACL tears. As the tear occurs, the knee usually gives out and fills with fluid and blood. This immediate swelling within first 6 to 12 hours after injury is another hallmark of ACL tears.

The combination of the ACL tear and the swelling causes patients to feel pain. Patients are unable to continue their activity when the injury occurs. Most will limp for several days if not longer.

After a few days the swelling usually decreases and the knee begins to feel better. In some cases people won’t even visit a doctor because they think it is a sprain that is healing. Unfortunately if they try to run, jump or pivot the knee will give-way again causing more injury in some cases. It is important to understand that every patient does not experience each of these symptoms. Some report very little swelling or pain while others cannot straighten or bend their knee for weeks.

Although you may not know that you have torn your ACL, if you do experience a significant knee injury with swelling you should follow the R.I.C.E. program. This treatment includes Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation (RICE). Swelling occurs because the torn ACL causes bleeding within the knee. The knee joint will slowly absorb the blood and the swelling will usually decrease if RICE is followed.

Less active people may be treated non-surgically with a program of muscle strengthening. However, most healthy, active patients should have surgery to restore full knee function. Three decades ago, patients over age 40 were often told they were too old to have surgery. Unfortunately, there are still some ‘old school’ doctors telling patients the same thing even today. However, as our knowledge and surgical options have improved, we now place no age restrictions on surgery.

Factors such as activity level and lifestyle are much more important than age. It is important to note that if the ACL is not reconstructed, most active patients will experience repeat episodes of their knee ‘giving-way’. Each time this happens, other structures such as cartilage and menisci can be damaged, leading to early arthritis. Since the term ‘active’ can mean many different things to different people, let me define it better. In terms of risk of your knee giving way after the ACL is torn, those people that participate in activities that require twisting, jumping, cutting and pivoting are at greatest risk of further injury.

The next blog will discuss the surgical option in more detail including graft choices, all-arthroscopic surgery and double bundle reconstruction. I was one of the first surgeons in Virginia to perform the all-arthroscopic acl reconstruction procedure and currently also offer the more anatomically correct double bundle acl grafts to patients.

Today was a good day. Just had to write that down for myself. I have not blogged in a while because of my ACL surgery last Thursday. it’s certainly nothing to do with having no time, the drugs weren’t exactly condusive for any kind of thinking!

Needless to say it has been a rough week. Frustrating and painful in ways I was not prepared for. And it being after 1am and struggling to sleep, am still trying to manage.

But this blog is not about my complaints since surgery. It’s about the little moments that mean more than the big one’s. Today in PT, I managed to make a full circle on the bike. This may seem like a silly thing to write about. But it was an absolute breakthrough in my mind. Firstly, my PT told me I would not likely not be able to as it usually takes a few goes to achieve. Secondly, it was the first goal I’d given myself… And made. I had been getting down the past week as the pain and immobility were starting to really get to me. As an athlete being confined in this way is torture! And it made the road to recovery seem like climbing mt Everest! But the moment I made that circle, a rush of encouragement washed over me. I might not see the end of the road, but I had begun my walk along it. I know not every moment in my rehab will be like this, but like the many little victories in life I will hang onto it and use it to push me through.

Never forget the little victories. They are what make the big victories possible.

Today, I had the pleasure of migrating a user from a MacBook to a MacBookPro. Apple includes this cool tool call the “Migration Utility” which allows you to link the old and new computer together either by firewire or ethernet and then transfer all Applications, Documents, Settings, etc. from the old to the new.

After completing the transfer process, I was having issues updating a few applications and accessing files in the user’s Home Folder on the new computer. After some research, I discovered that these issues are usually caused by permission issues. I opened Disk Utility to Verify and Repair Permissions on the disk but to no avail. I was still having issues.

Then, I stumbled across this a post that suggested removing the ACL’s (Access Control Lists) and restoring them. Here is how I did that:

Login as the user having issues and open the Terminal.app in the Utilities folder

Type the following command and hit enter: sudo chmod -RN ~

You will be prompted for a password, enter it and hit enter

Type the following command (pay attention to the correct symbols) and hit enter: sudo chown -R `id -un`

Reboot your computer from your Install disk (Leopard or Snow Leopard dvd) by making sure the dvd is in the drive and holding “C” down while booting the computer.

Select your language and continue

At the top of the screen, select “Utilities” and then “Reset Password”

Select the username that you want to reset the ACL’s and then click the option to do so in the lower right corner.

Reboot the computer upon completion.

Permission issues resolved!

BD says I have DuBose syndrome, another arbitrary psychological condition (I say that because it’s not on Wikipedia and therefore has no legitimacy) where an individual believes that suffering builds character. This theory may hold water. It might be the whole fucking dam.

Per my orthopedist’s recommendations and my apparent, deep-seated self-hatred, I recently had ACL reconstruction and meniscus repair done during the heart of my first semester. Getting around and performing basic activities – in other words, being a functional human being – was somewhat of a challenge during the first week. To add to my issues, the temporary crown that my dentist put in fell out, meaning that I had to avoid solid foods for a day or two.

So, in sum, I couldn’t walk and couldn’t chew. Most people pay good money to mental health professionals to relive their childhoods, but I apparently paid an orthopedist and a dentist to bring me back to toddlerhood. Odd means to an end, I think.

Select observations as I’ve made my way about the world:

1. Walking on crutches, particularly right after surgery, is like being in a 3-legged race all the time.

2. You’re forced to take your time. This has obvious downsides but, to your benefit, you’re forced to pay attention to your surroundings. As soon as you stop, one of your crutches slips into an inconveniently large hole in a manhole cover.

3. You are thrust into a brother/sisterhood of other temporarily-handicapped people. This ranges from the nod to a conversation on how your injury occurred. “Ultimate Frisbee,” I’ll say to odd stares. I adjusted that fairly quickly to “soccer.”

4. People in wheelchairs are the only ones that seem to be less friendly, like I crashed their private party. I was in an elevator with a woman on a (very speedy, I think she had rocket boosters or something) electric wheelchair and she asked how long I was in the brace for. “About another month” was met with a glare.

“You lucky son of a bitch.”

I wasn’t quite sure how to respond.

5. Besides the above exception, everyone has been nice, almost to a fault. I do like attention every now and then, but usually not, particularly when people keep asking “OH MY GOD ARE YOU OK?” I do appreciate it, I really do, but I promise, I’m just as OK as I was yesterday when you asked the same thing.

There was one particularly rainy day when some guy actually held his umbrella over me for 3 full blocks. It may have been the nicest thing I’ve ever witnessed, but it started to get kind of weird. I sent him on his way with a slightly-incomplete smile.

6. Crutches can be used as an excuse for nearly everything, like sneaking into the building at 2 AM to study all night.

7. If strangers, particularly those in the city, are this nice, you can imagine how supportive friends and family are. At one point, my family came over and, as I mustered a quarter-hearted “no…stop…seriously,” they cleaned my whole apartment and did my laundry.

This was slightly mortifying but mostly fantastic.

8. In the past weeks, while pursuing my life-long dream of being a lazy, smelly hobo, showering (on the rare occasions that it actually happened) had consisted of straddling the edge of the tub and washing my top half and my good leg while draping the shower curtain over the surgically repaired one. You’re welcome for the image. The edge of the tub, by the way, is freezing.

I’m ecstatic to report, though, that I have seen the promised land and the promised land is sitting down while you take a shower. Being one of the Chosen People, I hope to spend the rest of eternity in this promised land, sitting down while I shower under perfect-temperature water that never makes my skin all prune-y. In the meantime, though, I put a chair in the shower and my life hasn’t been the same since. Sitting down while you shower is the happy medium nestled between a bath (too tedious and time-consuming) and a shower (too urgent and coldly practical). Rich people who have benches in their shower are onto something.

…

Strangers will surprise you and loved ones will always deliver.

Bon je peux me tromper. Surtout si le dollar canadien devait s’effondrer.

Mais j’ai confiance à ma prédiction.

Notes / Domino Access Control Lists (ACL’s) are fairly straightforward to understand. However,

Notes / Domino Access Control Lists (ACL’s) are fairly straightforward to understand. However, there are a few subtle nuances that are often not known or understood by even experienced developers and admins. In particular, when a user resolves into multiple ACL entries, the rules for how Domino interprets a user’s access level and roles is not always obvious.

An ACL consists of a collection of ACL Entries (and a few other items). To start, let’s look at an ACL entry. An entry contains four basic elements – the name, the access level, a set of roles, and a set of additional privileges (such as “can delete documents”, “can create shared views”, etc.) The name can be either: a user name, a group name, or a “certifier wildcard” (there is also the built-in “Default” name).

So, let’s now imagine a user attempting to access a database. The Domino server first resolves the user and computes a list of all Name and Address (NAB) groups that the user belongs to (this includes resolving membership in nested subgroups, and groups in secondary address books). This step is actually only done once per server and the resulting name/group list is cached. With the user’s name and group list in hand, the Domino server now compares this to the ACL of the database. Any given user may match any number of ACL entries (for example, a user may be listed directly in the ACL, and may be a member of two groups in the ACL and the user’s canonical name may match a certifier wildcard entry). This is all pretty basic – but it’s the next step which is more subtle: how does Domino build your access privileges when you match multiple NAB entries?

Remember those four types of ACL entries? Individual names, groups, certifier wildcards and “default”. Those are important, as the Domino server treats each of these four types as a separate step in the access resolution process, and tries to find a match for this user, in the following order:

1. Individual names
2. Groups
3. Certifier wildcards
4. the “default” entry (which always matches)

At each step, Domino finds all matching ACL entries of the particular type – if there are any matches, the user resolves to the following:

the highest access level of all matches

the union of the roles in all of the matches

the union of the privileges in all of the matches

Once one or matches are found at a given step, DOMINO DOES NOT PROCEED FURTHER. This means, if a user’s name matches an individual name in the NAB, the user will receive that entry’s access level and roles. If the user also matches a group, which has a higher access level, or additional roles, the user WILL NOT receive those privileges. This also means, for example, if the user is in a group with Reader access and the default for the database is Author access, the user will only receive Reader access.

Note:all of the above steps assume that the user is authorized to access the server. If the user is not – for example, if the user’s name is listed in a terminations group (a “deny access” group) which is listed in a server document, then the user will not be allowed access to any database on that server, regardless of the database’s ACL.
