I’m going to be giving a talk at the Bay Area ACM data mining SIG in December, and I need to finalize my topic soon – like today

I was going to expand on my Elastic Web Mining talk (“Web mining for SEO keywords”) from the ACM data mining unconference a few weeks back.

But the fact that I’ll have 10s to 100s of millions of web page data to work with, from the public terabyte dataset crawl, makes me want to apply Mahout to the data.

I tossed out one idea on the Mahout list, looking for input:

I’d like to automatically generate a timeline of events.

I can extract potential dates from web pages, using simple patterns.

I can extract 2-to-4 word terms (skipping those which start/end with stop words) from pages that have extracted dates.

And then by the miracle of LDA (latent dirichlet allocation), I get clusters of date+terms.

But in this example, I don’t actually need LDA – I have my “topic”, which is the date. So it might not be a very good example. And will LDA scale to 100M web pages (which implies many billions of terms)? And how will I handle the same term (e.g. “barack inauguration”) being associated with a cluster of dates, since stories from a range of dates before/after the event will contain that same term?

So it could be a non-starter – I’m hoping for input on feasibility, level of effort, or if somebody else has a suggestion for something simple that could provide interesting/obvious results, I’m all ears.

Thanks!

– Ken

PS – my current fall-back is to just do brute-force map-reduce to come up with lists of terms per unique date, pick the top N, and maybe do some filtering for top-level terms that have too many associated unique dates. Which unfortunately wouldn’t use Mahout, but would be an example of crunching lots of data.

About a month ago, Dan Rockwell and I finished writing an article for interactions magazine about Ca

About a month ago, Dan Rockwell and I finished writing an article for interactions magazine about Casual Data, the term we’ve used to describe rich data propagated or mined via some form of social media. The piece defines Casual Data, talks briefly about why it’s becoming so prevalent, and then proceeds to identify current ways it’s being used and what that means to the fields of design and research. It will be out in a spring 2010 issue of interactions, however, here’s a sneak peek at some of the data nugget goodness:

The problem with too much data
While there are a number of firms analyzing the surface value of casual data, there is a need dig deeper to understand context and higher-level implications. The more connected we become, the more connected our data becomes, and the more we need a structured approach for making sense of it.

Companies having loads of customer data available is not news, however this casual data is not quantitative in nature (demographics, pattern-focused). The emotional meaning behind casual data should not be analyzed statistically, and the methods used to gain this data are as important to understand as the data itself. If customer voice is only harvested through an existing medium (e.g. submitting a query for iPhone-related tweets) the results you get will be brief and will tend to either be of intense glee: “new iPhone copy/paste function, thank GOD” or intense distaste: “Apple sucks!” – leaving little room for understanding context of use, while still providing good touch-points for product improvement. There is the potential of casual data being more dangerous than helpful if not properly understood.

Ok, so what’s our role?
The need to find long-term meaning via any quick casual data-farming medium creates a niche opportunity for research firms to use their proven techniques to analyze and understand this abundance of user input. Professional researchers will be able to understand how casual data is useful, where it is applicable and where there are still unanswered (and often unasked) questions. This will allow research companies to reinforce doing more in-depth research as a result of learnings from this data, rather than allowing clients to use this data (which is often incomplete) as conclusive.Even tools that have built-in analysis capabilities cannot play down the importance of involving a comprehensive research process. Design researchers look at data to understand not only design opportunities but also to come up with high-level emotional themes. If 10 people say that they want a certain feature from pampers.com, what does that mean in terms of their needs, and how will they benefit from that feature? Extrapolating concepts, ideas and feedback into themes can help the design team understand trends and potential meta-themes, and consequently how to design new products and services that weren’t necessarily articulated by their customers. Researchers also have the opportunity to help companies understand how to manage all of this data – does it need to lend itself to searching by future company stakeholders, or will it be regenerated? Having a plan for where the data goes can increase the value attained from it, and help to track trends over time.

Well yesterday was an action packed day. I arrived at the British Grove Studios in the morning with Maxine, full of ideas for the day ahead. The backing girls arrived shortly after and we were all set to go. I had auditioned for the backing vocalists a few weeks ago and discovered some great girls from the Academy of Contemporary Music. We ran through plenty of ideas for some new tracks and I was really impressed with how enthusiastic and professional the girls were, they’ve really added a new dimension to the tracks.

Taylor Swift. What can you say about her?

She is only 19 years old and is arguably the most popular singer out there right now.. and In my opinion, BEST singer out there right now. Not only has she put out a new album in 2009, but gone through many other crazy things this past year. Lets go through all the accomplishments 09 brought taylor!

SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE.- Swift performed on the hit show in January, and even appeared in a skit! Being on SNL is huge, let a lone veryyyyy nervewracking i am sure!

GRAMMY AWARDS- Performing at the Grammy Awards would be rewarding enough, but doing it along side your best friend would be awesome! Taylor performed “fifteen” with her close friend, Miley Cyrus.

CSI- Swift takes on the small screen! Taylor guest appearances on the hit t.v. show!

ACM SPECTACULAR- T Swift Wins big at the ACM awards winning Album Of The Year!!

FEARLESS ON THE ROAD!- Taylor kicks off her first Headling Tour with a bang, all shows sold out!

CMT AWARDS- Taylor wins HUUUUGE by being nominated for the top award, entertainer of the year! S

I love Taylor Swift, and her music! I think she deserves all of the stardom. She has worked hard ever since she was a young teen.

What do you think of Taylor????

It’s the fleamarket weekend!

I went for the fleamarkets at Home Club and 8Q SAM today. It’s pretty interesting to know that 8Q SAM is so named because it is on 8 Queen Street.

The first Flea Market that I went to was the one at Home Club. Though it is a relatively small area, there is still enough walking space. Glenn bought two really awesome shirts for only $25 and I got 2 pre-loved necklacese at $5 each. One is of a super huge owl and the other is a key with bird. Maybe I’ll take picture of it someday. I also got this really falling apart belt that is really vintagey and cool. I’ll see what I can do to salvage it. The owner that I bought the stuff from happened to be someone who went Prodigy with Glenn. What a coincidence!

Between Home Club and 8Q SAM, there was quite a bit of buffer time coz the fleamarket at 8Q SAM only starts at 6pm. Went to Novena church with Glenn. What a joke it was! I really try hard to pray and be all, erm, Catholic, but seriously, I think I was having like a huge argument with whoever’s up there who’s listening to me about the poverty and illnesses etc etc and in the end I gave up trying to speak to whoever’s up there. Sorry. No can do.

Head over to one of the shopping malls around there. There’s this black dress at FOND that looked really sweet on me. Nothing skimpy. It has puffed up cap sleeve, the front is pleated and it ends just above the knee. I swear, this would be the perfect outfit for me to attend openings with, especially the next huge exhibition at ACM featuring treasures from Dubai’s royalty! Can’t wait!

Head over to 8Q SAM next. We were still early so we decided to head out to the galleries since it was free admission and neither of us have been there. Here’s some pictures so bear with me.

No photos of the facade shot but this was one of the galleries that we spent forever inside. There is a cupboard that u have to walk through. I swear, it’s like NARNIA ! I confess, I’ve never watched Narnia but hey, I’ve read enough MLIAs to know what is NARNIA about. Haha. Yea, so you walk through this cupboard into this starking white corridor filled with sheets of papers and essays. Gosh, it’s like a lazy student’s worst nightmare.

Yup, so through that door you see at the back, we enter another study room where everything was in black and white, including milo tins etc etc. It was SO AWESOME. Me and Glenn went crazy looking around.

Sorry about the quality of the photos. The lighting’s almost non-existent and my phone doesn’t have flash.

There was a skeleton hidden in the closet! Sad to say, we couldn’t find the skull. Hey MCC person who does blog monitoring. Care to leave a comment as to where is the skull? I’d like to know. We love this gallery by the way.

Huge ass book that was padded and locked up. Like the rest of the books in the gallery.

Here’s another gallery where we stayed quite a while in.

This section is really interesting because all the works that are put up are done by the public.

The galleries were okay. I prefer the Singapore Art Museum better though. Compared to our last museum visit together to SAM at the start of our relationship, Glenn is far more engaged at 8Q SAM than he was at SAM and I was totally not really interested in the exhibits at all. I still love my workplace the most, right ACM? Haha.

The fleamarket at 8Q SAM was average at most. Nothing exciting other than some vintage that we saw but are definitely way out of out budget. There were plenty of blogshop stuff that only people half my size could wear.

Today was a lovely day well spent. Tomorrow, it’s fleamarket (YES AGAIN) at Zouk and maybe if we are free, we’ll go down to Changi Airport.

P.S. Whether we are free or not depends if I want to spend the time and work on my assignment. YES. Haha.

I found out a great article in the proceeding of ACM CHI 2009 conference about how usability evaluation can be considered harmful in the development of HCI.

This article defend that usability evaluation is now a standard in research and in academia but many times this evaluation can limit new ideas since they often cannot be tested with the available metrics.

Although in most f the cases this evaluations can accomplish their objectives is not clear that they can do it in all the cases especially in the cases where we have a clear lack of quantitative metrics.

“Within HCI research and academia, researchers employ usability evaluation to validate novel design ideas and systems, usually by showing that human performance or work practices are somehow improved when compared to some baseline set of metrics (e.g., other competing ideas), or that people can achieve a stated goal when using this system (e.g., performance measures, task completions), or that their processes and outcomes improve.

Clearly, usability evaluation is valuable for many situations, as it often helps validate both research ideas and products at varying stages in its lifecycle. Indeed, we (the authors) have advocated and practiced usability evaluation in both research and academia for many decades. We believe that the community should continue to evaluate usability for many – but not all – interface development situations. What we will argue is that there are some situations where usability evaluation can be considered harmful: we have to recognize these situations, and we should consider alternative methods instead of blindly following the
usability evaluation doctrine. Usability evaluation, if wrongfully applied, can quash potentially valuable ideas early in the design process, incorrectly promote poor ideas, misdirect developers into solving minor vs. major problems, or ignore (or incorrectly suggest) how a design would be adopted and used in everyday practice.

ACM CHI 2008 Guide to Successful Submissions states:
“does your contribution take the form of a design for a new interface, interaction technique or design tool? If so, you will
probably want to demonstrate ‘evaluation’ validity, by subjecting your design to tests that demonstrate its effectiveness.

ACM CHI publications: evaluations are dominated by quantitative empirical usability evaluations (about 70%) followed by qualitative usability evaluations (about 25%).”
