Hmmm.  Adobe Reader is certainly free, but offers no method of PDF creation.  All versions of Acrobat 9 facilitate PDF creation in a variety of methods – but they are definitely NOT free!  The answer is not on your computer, but rather in the clouds.  That’s right – Adobe is providing online services now via Acrobat.com .  Acrobat.com is a suite of utilities web based.  To use them, you need only to sign up for the free service.  Provide a user name (email address) and a password, and you’re in!  You get 2 gigs of file storage space, file sharing, online conferencing (Adobe ConnectNow), a word processor called Buzzword, and the ability to create PDF files.

When you log on to the service, you will notice that the service is still referred to as ‘beta’, but I believe the fact that there is an ‘Upload to Acrobat.com” button in Acrobat 9 indicates that it’s not going anywhere.

There are a few limits you must obey.  Your ConnectNow conferences are limited to 3 participants, file storage has a 2 gigabyte limit, and you can create only 5 PDF files online.  If you want bigger conferences, you’ll have to buy into the full-blown Acrobat Connect Pro . If you need to make lots of PDF files, you’ll buy Acrobat 9 and create PDF content with it.  You can use Acrobat.com to create PDFs from any of the following types of files: Microsoft Word (DOC), Microsoft PowerPoint (PPT), Microsoft Excel (XLS), text (TXT), Adobe PostScript® (PS), image (bitmap, JPEG, GIF, TIFF, PNG), Corel WordPerfect (WPD), and OpenOffice and StarOffice presentation, spreadsheet, graphic, and document files (ODT, ODP, ODS, ODG, ODF, SXW, SXI, SXC, SXD, STW). You can create up to five free PDFs.

If you decide that Acrobat.com is a service you would likely use often, you may want to download the desktop version of Acrobat.com which  is a smooth Adobe AIR application that has all the functionality you’d expect without having to launch your browser.  This app can be minimized to your Windows tray, or shown as a cool little desktop widget.

If you find yourself with a borrowed laptop, or sitting at someone else’s computer – and you need to make a PDF file, Acrobat.com can come to the rescue!

After a couple of weeks of research, I’ve finally found a decent software to start web conferencing with.  Our company has licenses to InterCall (formerly Raindance) and e/pop which I’ve toyed around with a little bit now but have found one major drawback with the both of them.  Both of them requires that every user on the web conference downloads and installs their software.

Granted that the software download and install only takes 5-10 minutes which is relatively short, but the fact that software must be downloaded and installed may become annoying.  In our industry, we constantly do business with different companies and different people.  Chances are that a project team will be completely different every 1-2 years due to the nature of the industry.  If you’re an owner, architect, or consultant on different project with different teams, all using different software vendors to do almost exactly the same thing (web conferencing that is), I can see it becoming quite annoying having to install several web conferencing software programs to use for each corresponding project team.

Enter the new acrobat.com.  First of all, acrobat.com was made from our friends at Adobe.  You know, Adobe, the company that has set the market standard for photo editing, universal Internet animation/interaction, and that universally portable document format, PDF?  Well, looks like they’re attempting to create an universal space for web conferencing as well.  At adobe.com, anyone may start an online meeting and invite people to join.  After about 5 minutes of poking around at the interface, I was completely familiar with the program.  This high level of intuitive design is key for a universal program.  The other key?  How about that it is completely web-based?  Sweet.

In order to use it, you just click on the icon, sign-in under a temporary name or create a free user account, wait a couple of seconds for the program to launch, and you’re good to go.  The best part is that you can invite other attendants by sending them a web-link to click on, which then re-directs them to load the program (automatically) and join the meeting.  No downloaded software onto the hard drive, no installation.  Just click and go.

Today I had my first live trial run while coordinating the logistics to do a web-based presentation in a couple of days for some clients several hours away.  The other user who I was coordinating the logistics of this presentation with was excited about the idea of a web-based presentation but was a bit intimidated by the thought.  By running through our logistical conversation using the adobe.com meeting software, we both quickly realized how easy this is going to be and how much potential this program may have.

As discussed from Autodesk’s view on the paperless project, there is a large environmental impact travel may have and a large time commitment that comes with it.  With easy to use software to host web-based meetings, we may meet up instantly from several far away locations and all share our desktops while communicating over a conference line, or VoIP if you really want to be fancy.  This is especially useful since the presentation that I’m planning on giving should only last for about 30 min.  When considering that it would take at least 3 hours of round trip travel to this presentation, suddenly 30 minutes does not seem worth while.  When this travel time is reduced to 0 hours and 0 minutes, there is no problem and no excuse. 

How great is that?

今年の6月に公開され、Acrobat 9との連動を前提にした様々な機能をWeb上で利用できてしまうサービスがAcrobat.comです。オンラインストレージ、PDF出力、ワープロ、オンライン会議、デスクトップ共有などが、Adobe IDさえ持っていれば無償で利用できます。β版とは言え、画面表示はすっきりとしたデザインで、未完成といった感じはありません。

用意された機能をひとつずつ見てみることにします。

Buzzword

一言で言ってしまえば、無償のワープロです。文字入力、フォントや色の変更、表組み、など一般的なワープロソフトに求められる機能は一通りそろっています。

利用しているPCにプリンタが接続されていれば出力することもでき、作成した文章の保存も可能です。PDF出力も当然できます。
残念ながら日本語未対応なのが最大の欠点でしょう。ここさえクリアしてくれれば、状況によってかなり便利に使えそうなのですが。

CONNECT NOW

一言で言うのは難しいのですが、オンライン会議で利用することを前提にしたメッセンジャーの類、とでも言うべきでしょうか。

チャット機能やマイク、Webカメラを通じたやり取りはもちろん、ホストのデスクトップの共有（ドキュメントの共有）などもでき、より密に相互が繋がることを目的にしているようです。リアルタイムで緊密にやり取りする必要がある場合などに利用するべきなのでしょうが、なかなか活用する場面を思いつけません……。

マイファイル・共有機能

この機能自体は単独で昨年頃から公開されていましたが、Acrobat.comの公開に合わせて統合されたようです。容量は1GB程度で、mp3などの音楽データやwmvなどの映像データ以外は大抵のデータがアップロードできます。WordやEcelのドキュメントもアップロードでき、日本語でも問題なく閲覧できます。アップロードしたデータは共有機能と連動することにより、公開することもできます。

共有の設定は、制限なしでの完全公開の他に、一定のユーザーのみに公開する制限公開、一切公開せずに自分のファイルに保管する非公開の3種類。
閲覧画面はAcrobatやReaderを思わせるUIになっています。

PDF作成機能

これこそ当然と言えるのかもしれない機能です。マイファイルの各種データはもちろん、PC上からファイルを選択してPDF化し、マイファイルに保管することもできます。β版なためか、日本語を含むテキストデータなどはしばしば文字化けを起こしてしまうのが難点です。

各機能とも全く問題がない、というわけではありませんが、そこはβ版。完成版となれば、非常に高機能なツールとなるのではないかと思います。

Tak jsme to přece jen stihli. Přikládám dva odkazy na české prostředí pro Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2.0.

Nejprve několik informací k lokalizaci samotné. Lokalizace vzniká zcela neoficiálně a není formálně posvěcená od Adobe. Nemusíte mít ale žádné obavy. Způsob, jakým je lokalizace řešena, nijak nenarušuje funkčnost programu a můžete ji kdykoli zase odstranit.

V rámci lokalizace jsme udělali některé zásahy do klávesových zkratek ve snaze co nejlépe využít znaky dostupné na českém rozložení klávesnice. Přesto jsou některé funkce, kterým nebylo možné klávesovou zkratku přiřadit. Přesný seznam zkratek a úprav založený na seznamu Victorie Bampton (www.lightroomqueen.com) dám na web zřejmě zítra nebo pozítří.

Mac má trochu jiný přístup ke klávesnici a převážná většina klávesových zkratek funguje beze změn. Přesto opět očekávejte jejich tabulku ke stažení.

Vzhledem k času se již nepodařilo dát soubory na web Amosu Software (uděláme to zítra), takže jsem využil www.acrobat.com a příslušné zazipované soubory si můžete stáhnout odtamtud. Pravděpodobně po přesunu na web Amosu tyto linky zruším.

Na závěr bych chtěl poděkovat lidem, kteří se podíleli na lokalizaci. Jsou to Zdeněk Mikan z Techsoft Servisu, který přeložil tuto verzi, Martin Musil, který testoval celkovou funkčnost a klávesové zkratky a Tomáš Metlička, který pomáhal s návrhem nových klávesových zkratek a reportoval problémy zpět do Adobe.

Úterý 2.9. 2008 – 21:30 - Dnes jsme jsme umístili finální verzi lokalizace na web Amosu Software. Nově jsme přidali variantu lokalizace pro ty, kteří chtějí raději používat anglickou klávesnici.

WordPress.com zcela splňuje moje požadavky na hosting blogu. Vše funguje dokonale, správa blogu je výborná a pro komplikovanější články mohu vždy použít Adobe Contribute. Jediným problémem, na který narážím, je nemožnost vložení Flash widgetu s výjimkou YouTube. Rád bych měl možnost vkládat prezentace a dokumenty z Acrobat.com, případně v budoucnu i fotky z Photoshop Express.

Existuje trik, kterým se dá tento problém obejít, a tím je služba VodPod.com, která je primárně určená pro Flash video. Celé řešení funguje tak, že se nejprve přihlásíte na Vodpod.com, tam vložíte svůj embed kód a Vodpod vygeneruje kód, který je pro Wordress.com akceptovatelný. Při prvních pokusech jsem narážel na to, že se ztratí odkaz na konkrétní soubor ve widgetu, respektive vše se chová, jako bych k zobrazovanému souboru neměl příslušná práva. Při tomto pokusu již vše funguje správně. Problém, se kterým se teď potýkám je, že nejsem schopen přijít na to, proč to před tím nefungovalo, ale teď již ano

Stále ovšem zůstává jeden nedostatek. Při klepnutí na widget Acrobat.com se Flash přepne do celoobrazovkového režimu a umožní zobrazit dokument v rozumné velikosti. Při použití Vodpod tato funkce přestává fungovat a celoobrazovkový režim se nespustí. Tím je celá věc použitelná tak maximálně pro prezentace, které mají velký text, nebo pro dokumenty, které jsou od počátku připraveny pro zobrazení v menším okně.

Ještě jedna poznámka – Acrobat.com zatím není plně kompatibilní s Flash player 10, který používám. Hlásí to trochu jiné chybové hlášky, ale nemožnost přejít do fullscreen režimu zůstává.

Recently my agency launched for a global IT client their ANZ website. As part of this and numerous other tactical projects including EDM’s, we’ve had to convert for the client a number of files into PDF format.

You’d think that would be straight forward.

Not so.

What we found is a mine field of unreliable conversion tools, either messing up the layout, font, formatting or completely ignoring the fact there are hyperlinks in the original document that are “kinda critical” to the overall strategy and user experience.

So, I thought lets see what Adobe has in relation to conversion tools….and I found a very sophisticated BETA site built in Flash 9 just for this purpose.

Get on, use it, and shortly you’ll pay the tiny subscription fee that I’m about too, as not only does it convert your files, it also saves your documents online for easy reference.

I’ve not check all the functionality yet, but will let you know cool features as I uncover them.

Tai yra visai neblogai, paprasčiausioms kasdienėms užduotims, tačiau, kas mane nuvylė, kad negalima išsaugoti ir atverti .docx, .pptx, .xlsx ir kitų “x” (kas nežinote, tai yra Microsoft Office 2007 failai). Kuomet pagalvoji darosi liūdna – jau tiek laiko praėjo nuo šio Office išleidimo, o kaip neina kitoms tarnyboms prie jo prisiderinti, taip neina.

Failų įkėlimas vyksta gan paprastai įkeliama po vieną failą arba atsiunčiamas failas elektroniniu paštu – jums suteikimas unikalus ir labai ilgas nesąmoningas elektroninio pašto adresas (kad jį žinotumėt tik jūs) ir juo galima išsiųsti sau laiškus į Google docs. Tarnyba gan gerai atvaizduoja failus, juos vietoje galima ir kurti ir redaguoti, galima net išsaugoti kaip .PDF! Tarnyba veikia greit ir patikimai. Dokumentuose ištaiso rašybos klaidas. Viskas lietuvių kalba, o tai išties džiugina akį. Failų prieigą galima dalintis ir su kitais vartotojais. Tai išties patogi interneto tarnyba.

– Microsofto kūrinys, todėl su jūsų turimu Office nekils jokių problemų. Ši tarnyba netgi gali integruotis į jūsų programą, kad failus galėtumėte skelbti vos tik juos sukūrėte. Atidaro visus pagrindinius Office failus, taip pat .pdf (daugiau nežinau, gal dar ką atidaro, tiesiog neradau daugiau informacijos, taip pat neradau kiek išvis galima laikyti failų vnt. ar GB). Tiesa, su pdf šiokia tokia problemėlė – lietuvių kalba vis dar terra incognita. Vietoj lietuviškų raidžių kvadratėliai. Graudu (google atidarė be jokių problemų). Kitus dokumentus atvaizduoja nepriekaištingai. Viena įdomi smulkmena – failų negalima kurti. Tiksliau pasakius galima, tačiau ne tuos kuriuos norėčiau. Sukurti galima tiktai note ir įvairius listus. Redaguoti ir išsaugoti galima, tačiau ne kurti. Pastebėjimas – kuo įkėlei, tuo ir išsaugosi. Tai gan kvaila žinant, kad “.x” failus supranta tik viena programa ir kitus kitiems vartotojams tai visiškai nenaudinga. Kitas minusas redaguojant “vietoje” pavadinimuose negalima naudoti taškų “.”. Elementarus taškas yra tabu. Iš pradžių pats nenorėjau patikėti tokia nesąmonė, bet po trečio bandymo pasidaviau – su sistema nepakovosi. Didelį privalumą Microsoftui užskaitau už tai, kad galima įkelti visą krūvą failų vienu metu (tačiau tik naudojant “Internet Explorer”). Galima kiekvieną failą komentuoti ir sekti jo gyvenimą – o tai išties palengvina failų kūrimą keliems žmonėms.

– labiausiai neįsipaišanti palyginus su prieš tai buvusiomis. Gal vien dėl to, kad tai yra “web based program kompiuteryje” ir dėl to, kad viskas flash. Gavau aš ją, tiesa pasakius, atsitiktinai – siunčiausi Acrobat reader ir gavau Adove Air dovanų. Taip, mano kompiuteryje yra suinstaliuota tinklo tarnyba, nors ji puikiai veikia ir interneto naršyklėje. Iš kart pasakau, kad galit talpint 5 GB duomenų – tai išties neblogai. Atidaro pagrindinius failus. Beje, tarnyba turi gražiausią išvaizdą iš visų – ar funkcionaliausią kitas klausimas. Tarnyba susideda iš penkių “patarnybių”:

Peržvelgus, susidariau įspūdį, kad kiekviena tarnyba yra skirta skirtingiems vartotojams su skirtingais poreikiais: Google docs – asmeniniam vartojimui ir kasdieniams užduotims, Microsoft Office Live Workspace – dirbti prie vieno projekto esant atskirai, jei darbuotojai gali gan dažnai susitikti. Labai nutolusiems darbuotojams, kuomet vienintelė galimybė susitikti yra chatas. Kekvienam savo, tačiau visomis tarnybomis galima ir verta naudotis.

Since its launch two weeks ago, we have been able to discover firsthand that Adobe Reader 9 is an amazingly effective device for generating traffic – twice as good as we expected it to be, in fact. So much so that it is generating more traffic than our servers can handle, and as a result performance has been poor. I want to apologize to anyone who used our service over these last few weeks and had a bad experience. Last night we deployed a new build that has improved things some, but not as much as I’d like. Another release is coming next week which will improve things even more. I’d offer subscription extensions like Apple did with MobileMe but since its 100% free that is kind of moot…

I also have to pass on this scalability post from Ted Dziuba (via Stefan Tikov via Jeff Atwood), which I found very funny (and yet so true) in my punch drunk state: I’m Going to Scale My Foot Up Your Ass.

Unless you know what you need to scale to, you can’t even begin to talk about scalability.  How many users do you want your system to handle? A thousand?  Hundred thousand? Ten million?  Here’s a hint: the system you design to handle a quarter million users is going to be different from the system you design to handle ten million users.

Amen, brother. Subscribed.

Desde hace rato hablamos de la nueva “idea” de Adobe, “Acrobat.com” que redundante no?, bueno pues el dia de hoy me decidi por actualizar AReader, tenia instalada la versión 8.1 y encontre la versión 9, pero en español, pero como me gusta probar lo nuevo pues la descargue. Hasta ahora solo he notado pequeños cambios, insignificantes, un poco de velocidad a la carga y algunas pequeñisimas diferencias de interfaz.

Algo que si me sorprendio fue que cuando se coloco el aceso directo a AReader, tambien se instalo uno para acceder desde mi escritorio a Acrobat.com, al principio pense que era solo un acceso directo a la pagina desde IE, pero al dar click se abrio una pequeña ventana muy al estilo de las aplicaciones en AIR en la que podia acceder a estos nuevos servicios que conforman Acrobat.com. Inicie sesión con mi cuenta y pude acceder a My Files, pero cuando intente acceder a ABuzzword no pude, me abria la pagina del navegador, pero igual, en fin desde My Files trate de abrir un documento de Word que tengo almacenado pero me mostro un error en Flah, en fin solo quiero comentar que me parece exelente “unificar” las nuevas soluciones de Acrobat en una aplicación en AIR pero aún falta pulir todo esto, solo asi aplicaciones como Buzzword pueden ser realmente utiles, incluso como sustitutos de Word (tal vez exagero) a las tareas más simples.

Ipak, to nam ne govori šta konkretno Acrobat.com omogućava svojim članovima…

Ovaj zanimljivi internet servis sastoji se od seta alata koji nude mogućnost da, na jednom mestu, kreirate nova dokumenta, kao što to možete raditi u Word-u, ili da upload-ujete gotove fajlove sa svog računara, te da ih menjate, sačuvate online i, po želji, konvertujete u PDF format. Tu je, naravno, otvorena i mogućnost kreiranja potpuno novih PDF dokumenata.

Ono što je zanimljivo kod pravljenja novih PDF dokumenata je dodatna mogućnost da preko sajta Acrobat.com “skinete” probnu verziju Adobe Acrobat 9, koju je Adobe nedavno predstavio. U devetoj verziji Acrobata korisnicima je omogućeno da u PDF dokumenta integrišu video fajlove i druge aplikacije kompatibilne sa Flash Player standardom, kao i još niz noviteta.

Osim što vam omogućava da pravite dokumenta kao u wordu, menjate ih, čuvate, sherujete, Acrobat.com poseduje još i interaktivno okruženje, što znači da članovi u realnom vremenu omogućeno da zajedno menjaju dokumenta, dele desktop i istovremeno komuniciraju vizelno, zvučno i tekstualno. Funkcije alata se međusobno dopunjuju tako da Acrobat.com omogućava jedan zaokružen uzajamni online proces rada.

Adobe has just launched their version of an online office suite available at Acrobat.com, complete with word processor , web conferencing/whiteboard app, online file sharing , file storage, and PDF converter. To complement this launch, Adobe has also announced a brand-new version of Adobe Acrobat, Acrobat 9, the biggest release since the initial one that introduced Acrobat to the world. The remarkable change in this new version is that Adobe is now incorporating Flash into the PDF experience.

My partner was using Google maps and Google earth the other day to find various places local as seen from above and was amazed to find that the results probably dated from at least five years ago as our old car car clearly (ish) been seen parked outside our old address and various newer buildings do not show up. A snapshot in time. Other locations , usually US locations seem bang up to date. A prioritised snapshot of our shared environment as seen by satellites and possibly the odd passing alien.

Need For Speed?

I also found out that our Internet speed has been upgraded as part of a rolling free  upgrade of speeds across the Virgin media network. Only by looking at a map of Britain with various local markers and comments about speed did I realise that upgrades must have happened yesterday and a speed test revealed an 8.4Mbps download with a 0.5Mbps upstream speed (why is cable so asychronous. I can understand ADSL’s disparity between download and upload).I don’t desire huge speed and these days with data limits and speed shaping in place by many ISPs it seems daft to increase speeds which encourage more data useage, only to then throttle the speeds back when people actually take advantage of those speeds offered.

Online Time

I’ve also got to play around with the oddly named Plurk, another twitter-like service with a more visual interface element with conversations and cliques (groups) placed along a timeline. Following conversations often means spinning back and forth the timeline depending on when you started or joined a conversation but if users are listened to then Plurk could develop into something usable.

I was also pleased to see Adobe expand their Buzzword on-line word processor via Acrobat.com,a web based  pdf creation, collaboration and file sharing utility. The full paid version of Acrobat 9 also includes an expanded version of Buzzword as an Adobe air based option.Buzzword had been one of the most impressive web applications that I’d used over the past year.

Another View

Piclens has been a very intriguing add on that available for a wide range of web browsers including Firefox and even safari. It transforms online picture searches on Google, Flickr, picasa and YouTube by presenting them as a 3D wall that can then be browsed as a full screen 3D wall of pictures that can be zoomed into and , along and out of etc. It certainly transforms the search process on these sites.

We made a few announcements today around our Acrobat 9 product and a new portal called Acrobat.com which is aimed at helping people work better. I think it’s significant because as a company we’ve released web-based applications like Photoshop Express and Buzzword but Acrobat.com represents something of a combination between the old world of Acrobat and PDF and the new world of Flash, Audio/Video, and real time communication. I also think it’s the best example of Adobe leveraging it’s own platform to deliver value to users.

The new version of Acrobat, Acrobat 9, includes the ability to deeply integrate Flash. It’s the fruit of the combination of Macromedia and Adobe finally coming together in each companies core products. With the new embed-ability you can incorporate movies as well as use Flex/Flash as a front end to your PDF content.

The more significant announcement in my mind is the roll out of Acrobat.com. As Scoble notes, we’re trying to change the way people work. Flash has been associated with video, animation, and annoying ads, but underneath all that is a platform that’s perfect for real time communication and a more engaging collaboration toolset. We’re finally bringing all of the pieces of the platform together to provide that.

It starts with Buzzword, which hopefully will become a hub for anyone working with documents on the web. You get a great UI and the ability to quickly add multiple users to a document and then see where changes have been made. But it also spans regular document management. We’ve had a beta of Share up for a while but now Share is integrated with Buzzword and with Acrobat 9 so you can share any document or any piece of information and then embed it on a page ala Scribd or Docstoc. As part of the service we’re also allowing you to convert your documents to PDF. The final piece is ConnectNow. Connect is a online meeting application similar to WebEx. But Connect uses the Flash Player so it works cross-platform on Mac, Windows, and Linux (the add-in which enables screen sharing isn’t available on Linux however).

I think that’s the main appeal of something like Acrobat.com. It’s built on Flash so you get the same experience on Mac, Windows, and Linux. The team has also released an AIR application so you can access some of the services by dragging and dropping your files. The integration with Acrobat 9 further closes the web/desktop gap. We’ve also exposed a set of APIs that developers can use to take advantage of some of these services. We’ll be rolling out more of these soon.

As an employee, I think this is a big step for the company. It’s a good use of the platform, it shows that we have a life beyond shrink-wrapped software, and it plays to our strengths – PDF, rich media, collaboration, and Flash. I think it’ a good example of RIA technologies being more than just fluff and fancy user interfaces.

Adobe has tied together its online office suite with the beta of Acrobat.com and the user interface is the big differentiator. What remains to be seen is whether online office users care about aesthetics.

On Monday, Adobe unveiled Acrobat.com, a suite that allows you to create word processing documents, share files, convert PDFs and hold Web conferences.

Simply put, Acrobat.com is the best looking online office suite on the block (Techmeme). Google Docs, Zoho and other entrants look fine, but don’t exactly stretch the imagination with the interface. Using Flash, Adobe’s suite, which includes Buzzword word processor, PDF converter and Web conferencing applications, is slick. Adobe’s online applications easily pass–and often top–what you’d find on the desktop. In fact, Adobe’s ConnectNow seems to be the killer app in the suite and could be a threat to WebEx.

The big question: How much will the interface matter? Adobe’s online office suite would clearly win a beauty contest, but it’s unclear whether users care. There’s something about Google Docs that just works. Ditto for Zoho. What’s the lock-in factor here? If I’m using one online office suite I may not try another just because swapping platforms can get confusing if you create a bunch of documents.

We’ll see how the answers to those questions turn out, but Adobe has another clear motive here. The online suite is a nice way to show off Flash. In addition, Adobe Acrobat 9, which was announced Monday, includes support for Flash. The goal: Create a defensible software and services strategy that will lead to a virtuous sales cycle among various Adobe products.

Acrobat.com is designed to give Acrobat 9 customers a “personal workspace in the clouds,” according to Adobe’s statement. You can see where this is headed: For Acrobat 9 customers Acrobat.com (statement) is a hybrid software model to keep them in the fold. Meanwhile, Adobe hopes that Acrobat.com will get a few folks to buy its software.

Acrobat 9 offers native support for Flash, touts document sharing and allows users to manage portfolios of PDFs. All of these features work with Acrobat.com in what Adobe hopes will be a nice sales cycle.

Adobe’s Acrobat 9 combined with Acrobat.com seems to hit on multiple goals for the company. All it needs now is the user traction. Adobe’s suite certainly has the looks.

Adobe has taken it’s innovative (but isolated) Flash-based word processor, called Buzzword, and bundled it into their own on-line suite of office apps. And the resulting is… less than stellar (according to Ars Techica’s convincing initial review of the suite, Acrobat.com.)

Adobe Systems Inc. is launching a new version of its document sharing software Acrobat on Monday, and this time it can package videos. Acrobat allows users to package documents so they can be read across different hardware and operating systems. Acrobat 9 comes with Adobe’s video-enabling software Flash. Users can include Flash-based videos when they create and share documents with the portable document format, commonly known as PDF. With a professional version of Acrobat 9, for example, users could package a Power Point presentation not just with images, but also with an audio of the presenter’s voice.

“You can now send someone a presentation that speaks on its own all through a PDF,” said Adobe spokesman Kevin M. Lynch, who is not related to the company’s chief technology officer with the same name. Adobe also launched Acrobat.com, which will host Web-based software services to support document creation and sharing. The San Jose-based software maker hasn’t launched a new version of Acrobat since November 2006, almost a year after it purchased Macromedia Inc., the creator of Flash software. Users have expected to see Flash integrated into Acrobat since that purchase, Lynch said.
