The death toll from winter storms across Europe rose to at least 80 on Monday as transport chaos spread amid mounting anger over the three-day failure of Eurostar high-speed trains.

With tens of thousands stranded by the cancellation of London-to-Paris trains and hundreds of flights across the continent, new accidents and mass power cuts added to the big freeze tumult.

A car veered off an icy road and knocked concrete onto rails, derailing a Paris commuter train and injuring 36 people, police said. Three hundred people had to be evacuated from the train.

Another train in the Croatian capital Zagreb hit a buffer injuring 52 people.

Croatian investigators blamed the minus 17 degrees Celsius (1.4 Fahrenheit) temperatures for a brake failure, national television reported. European temperatures as low as minus 33.6 degrees Celsius (minus 28.5 Fahrenheit) have been recorded in Bavaria.

In Poland, authorities said 42 people, many of them homeless, had died of cold over three days after temperatures plunged to minus 20 degrees Celsius (minus four Fahrenheit).

Ukraine reported 27 deaths while six people were killed in accidents in Germany and three in Austria.

France has reported at least two deaths of homeless people, and the national power company briefly cut electricity to two million people on Monday saying it was necessary to avoid an even bigger blackout amid surging demand.

More flights were cancelled in France, Germany, the Netherlands, Portugal and Spain and main highways were blocked across Europe where some regions had more than 50 centimetres (20 inches) of snow.

The breakdown of the Eurostar service under the Channel, linking London with Paris and Brussels, has symbolised Europe’s suffering.

After the nightmare of more than 2,000 people stuck in the tunnel when five trains broke down Friday, tens of thousands more people have missed trains cancelled since then, with Eurostar announcing a “restricted” service for Tuesday.

But those trains will only run for passengers originally due to travel Saturday or Sunday, with the remainder of the backlog to be cleared over the next few days. Normal service is not expected to resume before Christmas Day.

The French transport ministry has ordered an investigation into the breakdown, which Eurostar said has been caused by trains unable to handle the change from freezing temperatures outside to warm temperatures in the tunnel.

Eurostar said it had launched its own independent review.

The winter storms caused other disruption across Europe.

Air traffic was again badly hit as temperatures remained glacial: minus 20 degrees Celsius in Sibiu in Romania, where more than 50 centimetres of snow fell, and minus seven Celsius in Venice, Italy.

Seven hundred people spent the night on camp beds at Amsterdam-Schipol airport and more flights were cancelled after dozens were grounded Sunday.

The Dutch rail network was also badly hit with the railway company advising commuters to stay at home.

Heavy snowfall led to more delays and cancellations at Frankfurt and Duesseldorf airports in Germany, where more than 500 flights were cancelled or redirected on Sunday.

Twenty percent of flights out of Paris-Charles de Gaulle were cancelled Monday. The main RER commuter train line running east to west across the Paris region has been out of action for 12 days because of a strike.

Spanish civil aviation authorities said 174 flights from Madrid-Barajas airport were called off. Flights from Lisbon to Madrid were among those hit while main roads in northern Portugal were cut by snow.

Brussels airport also reported cancellations and delays.

After more snow falls on Moscow, authorities sent out 13,000 dump trucks to clear the streets as chronic traffic jams built up.

In Britain, more airport delays hit passengers while snow forced the postponement of Wigan’s English Premier League football match against Bolton Wanderers.

Today’s suggestion is a rather simple one – to simply put up a small ‘light sign’ to get a message across and raise awareness of an issue. The issue could be ‘peace’ of ‘save trees.’

The message is communicated by making the word/s using a string of lights (fairy lights, etc) and hanging them outside of the house.

This idea is not one I’ll be following up – I’ll do my bit for the environment and not do this one. However, spreading a message via a string of lights can be done – or it could be done by a piece of chalk as with the word ‘eternity,’ by Arthur Stace in Sydney.

This last week as been very hard on me, a lot is going on in my life. It seems like the biggest changes of my life are coming all at once.  Today I turn eighteen, and it does not feel any different then seventeen as expected.  But a new year in my life has made me sit back and analyze everything. I remember just three years ago I departed on my early journey into adulthood by moving out on my own and taking on responsibilities that most my age do not. This has had its up and downs. It has been great to be able to learn and experience life full speed ahead by taking on the responsibilities to take care of my girlfriend Jessica who is still in school. To Support her and her horse and dog, and to work to pay for the rent and other expenses. It has been great to be able to get a start at my photography career. But sometimes I feel as if I am going at a breakneck speed down a long road and I cant stop. I guess I just wish I would of spent time actually having a childhood, and sometimes I think it was not such a good idea to jump into all these responsibilities head first and now I feel like I am hitting a brick wall and all these things are crashing and tumbling  down on me.  For reasons that would take fifty pages to explain my relationship with Jessica is coming to an end. Where I live jobs are running dry for a creative entrepreneur such as myself.

I am going to produce a documentary that is all about finding out what you want in life and following your dreams and goals. This is exactly what I will be doing on this walk. During  the nine months of this walk I will have time to really discover who I am, I will become familiar with feelings, thoughts, and emotions that I never knew existed within. I guess this trip is going to be one huge zen-like therapy for me. To live such a simple life is a amazing thing to think about in itself. Just think of the kinda life you would live wile doing a trip like this. You have four responsibilities, wake up, walk, eat, sleep, and wake up and do it again! repeat this for nine months and you end up with a lot of time on your hands to be thinking. For someone like me who lives a fairly complicated life this will be a huge change.

You may just be reading all of this and you are thinking I am just a loser that needs to get over myself and stop the whining. Well maybe you know exactly what you want to do with your life. Maybe you know what you want to be doing when you are pushing eighty, but I doubt it. In my short eighteen years on this earth I have grown up in a small town. In a place where everyone around me just seems to live life just enough to stay alive. So many just seem to want to do just enough to get them by. There are so many young people my age who think just like this. It is so wrong not to give yourself expectations to live to. If you set goals in life and work for these goals you will always be improving on and becoming the image that you create. With this mentality you will not let anyone define who you are, through life you will define yourself.

During this hike I will be filming the full experience in 1080I HD video. I want to capture all the amazing experiences from the walk and put together a two-hour documentary of everything form the preparation to the moment I enter Washington DC on foot. I want to use this documentary as a tool to promote a message  of inspiration for younger generations to get out and make something of their life! I will also be living almost completely off the grid during this walk, I will be living a green life to the extreme. You will be able to experience all this in the film when it comes out in Spring 2011!

I may not be going on this journey alone. As you seen from the title of the post another individual just might me tagging along for the nine months of this walk! I am not going to tell you much about this person until I am absolutely sure that she (yes I said she) wants to come. It would be amazing to have someone to experience this trip with me. It would just be great to have someone who I could talk to on those never-ending strips of highway. The more I think about having company on this walk the more I begin to look forward to the idea.

I am now looking for more sponsorship to fund the walk and the documentary. I have had a few offers from various company’s about funding the documentary. The problem was that they wanted to take the film over and turn it into their own. I am looking for a sponsor that wants to do a trade, they fund the documentary and get a tun of publicity in return.  I plan to send the film into IFC, and many other Independent film networks.

Here is a beautiful old building in Newcastle – Custom’s House. Across the road from the Newcastle Railway Station, this wonderful building is a landmark in it’s own right. Sadly, another old building in Newcastle that could be considered beautiful has been run into the ground so to speak – the Post Office.

Custom’s House is now occupied by a restaurant and what a beautiful location – right on the foreshore of Newcastle’s picturesque parkland area.

Whenever I catch a bus to Newcastle – I spend a bit of time here in the park in front of Custom’s House. The bus stop for the return trip (and the arrival stop) is right next to the train station and opposite this magnificent building and parkland area. It is a great little spot to pass the time while waiting for the bus.
