Tahun 1942, Amerika tengah menghadapi Perang Dunia II. Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) adalah seorang relawan yang berniat masuk ke dinas militer namun tidak diterima. Dr Erksine (Stanley Tucci) dari program penelitian militer tertarik padanya dan Rogers ternyata lulus ujian kali ini. Pemilihan crew cukup sedikit memusingkan karena beberapa orang juga harus memilih untuk mengerjakan Captain Amerika atau Iron Man. Readers Annotation: Rachel has lived near The Line ever since she can remember, a force field erected to protect the United States from attackers – and to keep The Others out. When she receives a message from the other side, ‘Away’, Rachel begins to uncover the terrible truths that her mother has been hiding from her.

Plot Summary: The US builds a defense wall (The Line) around the country. A war with another country interferes before the wall is complete and an area of the country is left undefended. The inhabitants are exposed to bio-weapons and are now considered contaminated. The new repressive government forbids contact with them. Rumors swirl about what has happened to them…are they now mutated monsters? Rachel lives with her mother near The Line and one day meets one of the “other” from the Away side. Even though it means risking her and her mother’s safety, she wants to help the Others…

Critical Examination: The line is written in an omniscient narrative third person tone (though I think it would have been better in 1st person). The characters are pretty well developed, but there are many and Rachel herself could have been developed more.  I was left wanting much more and I never did actually find out how old Rachel was…10? 17?  Short sentences keep the action going and the pages turning. Overall, the story was slow to start, but builds and the ending is a doozy with a cliffhanger. The next book, Away has just been published.

Information about the Author: There is not much out there about Terri, even on her website. The Line was her first book. Terri lamely reveals that she lives in Washington State, has two cats; Nadine and Walter and a tiny, strange dog named Simon. She also says about herself, “I like to write books.” OK…

Upon arrival, Tessa is disappointed to discover that Nate has sent two women to meet her in his place. Although Tessa is hesitant to go with the strange woman, she is persuaded and accompanies them to meet her brother. But her suspicions were correct: Tessa finds herself held hostage by the Dark Sisters, two warlocks who force Tessa to utilize a secret power that she never even knew she had: Shape shifting. She soon realizes that there is an amazing supernatural world beyond the mundane life that she is used to, a world made of vampires, shadowhunters, warlocks, and demons (not to mention the two supernaturally handsome men protecting her at all times).

Critical Examination: The action-heavy plot takes off from the first page, propelling readers toward a dramatic conclusion that fails to answer all the questions raised during the course of the tale, leaving the door wide open for the next book… rich characters with distinct personalities, endearing, witty, passionate and mysterious. One thing I’ve realized that I absolutely LOVE about Cassandra Clare’s work is that her stories never center solely on just one female lead and one male lead.  No, rather, there is always a rich cast of characters that supplement each other; they give each other depth and personality; there is a warm sense of camaraderie and rivalry that permeates the atmosphere and makes me care for them. The plot is alternately thrilling and chilling, hilarious and somber, lighthearted and tragic. Clockwork Angel is amazing in its ability to present a story that is BOTH character-driven and plot-driven, with both done superbly well.

Information about the Author: Cassandra Clare was born overseas and spent her early years traveling around the world with her family and several trunks of fantasy books. Cassandra worked for several years as an entertainment journalist for the Hollywood Reporter before turning her attention to fiction. She is the author of City of Bones, the first book in the Mortal Instruments trilogy and a New York Times bestseller. Cassandra lives with her fiance and their two cats in Massachusetts.

Plot Summary: Ender is a genius. When he is recruited for training in the military to learn how to fight the “buggers,” aliens who have attacked the Earth, it is considered an honor. Ender is taken to the training site, and finds himself in a fiercely competitive environment. Allies are few in this place, as each boy and girl wants to excel. But, Ender finds that he easily beats his opponents again and again. He is an excellent strategist and a smart fighter. Ender and a few other elite fighters are eventually promoted to Command School, where they fight in computer simulations against the buggers. The training is relentless, as Ender leads his team into these computer-based battles every day for hours on end. In the simulations, when Ender destroys the buggers’ fleet and planet, he is finally told that this was no simulation at all. The military had duped him into leading the offensive against the next attack and he had unwittingly eliminated the enemy. And, they aren’t done with him yet.

Critical Examination: Besides being so full of action and suspense, you can barely put it down, like most good science fiction books, Ender’s Game raises profound ethical and moral questions. Readers will question whether it was right of the military to use Ender as their pawn. They will question whether it is right to eliminate an entire population in self-defense. These questions about fundamental human (or alien) rights are important questions for anyone to think about, and for teens to read this book and begin pondering such thoughts at an early age can only be a benefit to our society. Any book such as this that stimulates teens to think outside their typical sphere of experience, and delve into deeper questions of right and wrong is a book that should be championed.

Information about the Author: Orson Scott Card is from a Mormon family. He was born in Washington, but lived all over the Western United States during his youth. As a requirement of his church, he served a mission in Brazil when he was 19. Though he dated other girls, he married his first love, Kristine Allen. The two finally settled in Greensboro, North Carolina. Together they had five children, though two of them have died. Card has written many popular and successful books in any different genres. Aside from his science fiction writing, which has won him a Hugo Award and a Nebula Award, Card has published fantasy novels, biblical novels, American frontier stories, poetry, and plays. In addition to his prolific and thriving publication career, he teaches writing and directs plays.

Book Talking Ideas: In this book, kids are trained from age 6 in an off-world facility where their training consists mostly of games. How do these games train them? Do you see any implications here for our current world?

Challenge Issues: Sex, language (nothing too major) and violence

Why I included this book: Considered by some to be the best sci-fi novel ever written…so I had to read it. Glad I did, if you like Sci-fi, this should be on your list!

The movies were action packed – never a dull moment in any of them.  I’d have to say I like Wolverine and Storm…lol…

Plot Summary: A steampunk take on an alternate reality of World War I with the Central Powers (the Clankers) reliant on legged war machines and zeppelins, and the Allies (the Darwinists) specializing in genetic manipulation making war animals. The Clankers live and die by technology. Machines are their future. In fact, their machines seem to serve one purpose only: advancement of military might. Darwinists are a bit different. Yes, they use technology, but this technology is fused with the life forms of earth. These are called Beasties. A great example of these Beasties is the Leviathan itself. This monstrosity has the body of a whale, but is actually an amalgam of ecosystems working together. It looks and acts like a zeppelin, the difference being, it is alive. Prince Aleksander’s world has been turned upside down in a single night. His parents were killed and now he’s on the run from his own people and his enemies. As the sole heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, Alek is to stay deep in the cold hell that is the Swiss Alps until the threat of war is over. But fifteen years of planning his safety retreat could never account for a Darwinist ship to fall from the sky right in front of them. Alek is too good for his own good, and decides to help the crew of the Leviathan. Deryn Sharp is enlisted in the British Air Service disguised as a boy. Deryn is not afraid to fly; she’s witty, smart, and very creative in her ways of getting around the ship. It’s her quick thinking that saves two of her crew mates, and herself when the Leviathan goes down after being severely damaged. She’s woken up by a strange boy who seems to have appeared out of nowhere, bringing medicine and supplies for the stranded crew. As he refuses to say where he came from, she has no choice but to take him hostage! And the story moves fast from here…

Critical Examination: The world building blew me away, with the Clankers on one side and the Darwinists on the other I never knew what to expect next! What new beastie or machine would make it’s appearance at the turn of a page? It was especially helpful to have Keith Thompson’s illustrations along the way, it helped me (a novice at steampunk fan) to fully visualize the contraptions and lifeforms that were described. Characters were well-developed and liked-starting with our heroes Deryn and Alek. They’re both young adults, brave, and a bit reckless. The story is told in alternating chapters between these two, and I liked that I could always distinguish whose chapter it was by the language used. Deryn curses a lot, Alek–being a prince and all–is more formal. Dr. Barlow and Tazza were also favorite characters, and I hope to see more of them in the other books, what ARE they hiding? Other characters that stayed with me were the messenger lizards, the fléchette bats (very cool), Huxleys, and the Leviathan itself. The only criticism I have for this novel is that sometimes the language seemed needlessly juvenile-too simple and the descriptions of the lifeforms and machines could have been more detailed (but then the drawings made up for the lack).

Information about the author: Scott Westerfeld (born May 5, 1963), is a New York Times bestselling American-born author of YA sci-fi literature. He was born in the Texas and now lives in Sydney and New York City. In 2001, Westerfeld married Australian author, Justine Larbalestier. Scott Westerfeld’s other teen novels include the Uglies series, the Midnighters trilogy, The Last Days, and the sequel to Peeps. Many finding places on ALA’s Best Books for Young Adults Lists.

Readers Annotation: In a dirty,cruel,  near future where children risk their lives scavenging scrap metal in order eat one more day – Nailer is a ship breaker. Ship breakers pray for that one big lucky break, and one day, Nailer gets his.

Plot Summary: A hard core dystopian world of the future after global warming has raised the level of the oceans. New Orleans is now underwater and oil and gas have been depleted. High-tech sailing ships now roam the oceans and the rusting hulks of diesel ships have become the gritty world of the “ship breakers” – aggressive gangs that tear down the old ships for parts. Children work in these gangs because small bodies are needed to scramble through the ducts. The world has been forced to go completely “green”: biodiesel, solar and wind power. But at the same time, society has splintered into haves and have-nots and instead of countries and states, you now have territorial clans and gangs. There are genetically engineered endentured “half-men” and the world seems to be governed by uncaring, dishonest corporations. Nailer, the main character who doesn’t know his own age (but we suspect he’s probably about 12 or 13, before his growth spurt), gets his lucky break after a terrifying hurricane,  a “city killer” levels the beach where he lives and works, bringing with it a marooned clipper ship full of valuable salvage.  This boy has real heart, in a culture where survival often trumps heart.  His father is a drug-addict psycho who is absolutely merciless. The ending really pulled together with a breathless chase and high-tech pirate fight scene that will have you practically tearing pages to get to the next page.

Critical Examination:  Nailer’s father is a particularly powerful representation of one of the many dark sides of this dystopia, and ranks as one of the best antagonists I’ve encountered in a long time.  Ship Breaker is a perfectly paced, hard-core  adventure story, with unforgettable, heartless characters set in a grim and gritty future that ties in the real problems surfacing today-China’s new economic power, genetic engineering, global warming, peak oil and America’s disappearing middle class, to name a few.  Bacigalupi deftly handles themes about family, loyalty, power, class, and the environment in a way that blends seamlessly and never feels forced.

Information about the Author: Paolo Tadini Bacigalupi (born August 6, 1972) is an American science fiction and fantasy writer.  He currently lives in Western Colorado with his wife and son, where he is working on a new novel. Ship Breaker  was awarded the Michael L. Printz Award for best young adult novel and was nominated for the National Book Award for Young People’s Literature.

Book Talking Ideas: How far would you go to survive? Would you be willing to put yourself in life threatening situations to earn just enough to eat? Could you kill another human if you had to?

Challenge Issues: Swearing is pretty mild through out the book and other than being harsh, graphic and violent in parts, there is not much to argue with. The story questions blood family loyalty, and proves that blood does not always make ‘family’ worth defending. 

Why I included this book: This book was highly recommended by my 8th grade son. Two years after it’s publication, I still had to wait months before I was able to check it out of the library. A hard-core, action-packed page turner-very popular among teen boys!
