I just got done watching National Treasure 2 and i was just wondering if some stuff in that movie is true? Like is there really a president’s secret book, or is there really a City of Gold?
By the way i know the movie is fiction. And also in real life is there "secrets" like in the movie?

I am starting to feel uneasy about all the similar stories I hear from you. People are coming from all sides telling me they have had similar or repeating problems at local dealers, that seem out of the ordinary. Is there something larger here than just a series of lemons breaking down at random? Is there a pattern in this? I’ve decided (after suggestions from an Auditor friend of mine) to go all Erin Brockovich on y’all and start compiling facts and figures in a spreadsheet, to see if I can find patterns in breakdowns, repairs, and warranty covers. I need facts starting with all you Volvo owners. Facts you can back up with service records (easily obtained from the dealer) or receipts.
Send me:
1. Year
2. Make
3. Model
4. Where you bought your Volvo
5. What major mechanical issues you have had
6. What mechanic found it (dealer or independent)
7. At what date & milage
8. What action was taken
9. If you were covered under warranty
10. Where you had the car repaired

If you had repeated problems, I definitely want to hear about it.

“Jesus Christ is a name, not a swear word.”

This fat-stacked headline was red-lettered boldly on the back of the semi that I cannot help but assume was trying to introduce me to the aforementioned Christ Himself in person, by way of steamrolling my puny convertible to smithereens as I was being forced onto the California Freeway last week.

Perhaps the publicly reproachful driver felt, as he muttered words of encouragement to himself, foiled in his efforts to separate my soul from my body, that perhaps I was a pro-choice supporter, and he could feel sure that another in The Crusade might tag me later – and I’d plummet downward, instead.

“Jesus! That was close!” I said to my beautiful assistant, Lacey, my passenger.

Although the driver could not hear – he was, by then, far ahead of me, blowing the doors off California’s law against truckers driving faster than 55 mph – it DID give me some satisfaction to say it.

The trucker DOES make a point, however, that I’ll wager he himself is too ignorant to know he’s making.

Words – particularly names – have enormous power.

Take my own. You might as well. There are an awful lot of Elizabeths out there.

So many, in fact, Elizabeth Stone wrote a Lives column in the New York Times Magazine about an online gathering of Elizabeths in May, 1999 – an article which obviously caught my eye – and I, obviously not being shy, wrote the New York Times to tell them, and they, obviously tickled by my response, even published it.*

[READ THE LETTER AT THE END OF THIS POST.]

(So: on my tombstone, or in my obituary, someone PLEASE mention that I was at least ONE time published in The Grey Lady?** Thank you. Much obliged.)

To carry on:

Unlike the many Liz, Lizzie, Bess, Libby, Bitsy, Bette, Betsy (the Elizabeth who birthed me is one), Belle, Beth, Bettina, Eliza, Lisa, Liza, Tibby, and the list goes on ad infinitum, I myself prefer: “Elizabeth,” the anglicized form of the original Hebrew name “Elisheva,” meaning “my G-d is an oath.”

What “my G-d is an oath” means, though, I’m not sure.

People, when I introduce myself, nearly always try to be kind of smooth, and say: “So… do you go by ‘Elizabeth,’ or…” Then they trail off, sort of expecting me to fill in one of the above nicknames.

(Sometimes, though, they just insert the horrid “Liz.” Which is not horrid, of course, on some people. Just horrid on ME.)

Which means I have to jump in quickly with: “Yes, ‘Elizabeth.’ It’s a few more syllables, but I’m worth it.”

(Actually? My good friends, and even my oldest daughter, call me “Tish,” a nickname I got dubbed with by someone whom I love with all my heart – but that’s another story.)

I’d often heard rumors that medics, in efforts to revive someone, will call their name, but I’d dismissed it until I’d reluctantly found myself headed to the Emergency Room with yet ANOTHER concussion (I’ve been told that if I were a pro athlete, I’d be forced into retirement.)

Promptly, and to the extreme embarrassment of everyone – except, of course, me – I dropped like a stone, right at the nurses’ check-in station, galvanizing everyone into action.

Although I recall little of the actual dive downward, I DO remember two things:

A sharp pain in my chest where a cruel nurse helpfully twisted my skin sharply to revive me – which, although it certainly focused my attention, even THAT didn’t pull me out of the fog I was in – until I heard the nurse ask one of my kids: “What’s her name?”

Naturally, in standard kid-fashion, I heard the kids go: “What?”

As if the nurse has asked instead:

“What is the cosine derivative of x minus the square root of pi?”

“Her NAME,” the nurse asked again. “What is her NAME?”

“Oh,” they said. “Elizabeth.”

In their defense, I think they had to stop for a moment and remember my name isn’t actually MOM.

When the nurse started barking “Elizabeth! Elizabeth!” in that demanding sort of way, it really DID pull me back. Sort of the same way your own grownups do when you’re a kid and you get the call from your bed: “Get up! The bus will be here any minute.”

Calling my name brought me back from Neverland in the oddest sort of way that confirmed the rumor: it turned out to be a sort of Dr. Jekyll experiment on my own self that left me with a “Dang! It’s TRUE!” feeling, wondering what ELSE I’d heard that might ALSO be true.

Jesus Christ! There’s a whole world of weirdness out there to discover!

Hopefully, though, I won’t have to get concussed or run over to find them all out.

# # #

* Where Everybody Knew My Name

Published: Sunday, May 30, 1999

Elizabeth Stone’s Lives column (May 9) on the on-line gathering of Elizabeths reflected perfectly the trend for small groups to coalesce on the Internet based on hobbies, interests or random commonalities like names. The Internet, vast as it is, seems to spark a small-town quilting-bee longing in many users.

Of course, there was another reason Stone’s column caught my attention. I’m also an Elizabeth. Maybe I’ll send her an E-mail.

Does anyone know anything about or have any information on an eptopic anus on a newborn?
My daughter is 6 days old and she has an eptopic anus. Its where the bum hole is right up pretty much in the vagina, the 2 holes are almost joined. She can toilet fine and everything. All the rest of her is fine. Her bum hole is just in the wrong place.

When she was born she was rushed away from me and taken to the NICU for 2 days, it was so hard for me because they didnt let me nurse her for the first 6 hours because they initially thought she didnt have a bum at all, until she did a big poo!

Anyway, they have told me she will need a 3 stage operation at some stage, 1st op is to give her a colostomy bag, 2nd is to re route the anus and make a new hole where its supposed to be and then the 3rd is to connect everything back together so she poos like normal again.

In 3 weeks when she is 1 month old she is back to hospital to be put under general annestetic and they are going to have a proper probe around and see exactly what is going on. Im so worried, honestly, my little baby girl at 4 weeks old having surgery!!

Of course i have googled it and have a pamphlet on it but its all in doctor mumbo jumbo. So im hoping someone has some personal experience or something to help me out a bit

HI, I don’t know anything about your question but just wanted to say I know how you feel about this all being really scary. Have faith in your daughters doctors who have most probably preformed this surgery quite a few times! Its never any fun when your little one is in pain and there isn’t a lot you can do about it. Make sure you have lots of support and try not to stress (I know its hard). Take time for yourself as well – this is really important.

I do know of one person who was born without an sphincter and had to have an op when he was really little to correct it. He’s 32 years old now and fine! I can’t really comment on what him & his mum went through because I didn’t know them then.
jingledelz | Nov 16, 2009

not personally but my hair stylist (also good friend) had a baby girl a few year sago who was born without a anus at all! She had to have surgery immediately to build her one and now she’s over 2 years old and pooping like a normal toddler. So I wouldn’t worry!

Body armour doesn't kill people. People with body armour kill people. Or do they?
What is the logic behind banning body armour?

well, law-enforcement uses it and they are already out gunned by criminals, so they do not want to be in a fire fight wiht criminals who not only have better weapons, but are as or better protected than our own police.

I’m not sure if you are aware of what has been happening in BC over the past year or two.. It has been overrun by drug gangs, and these drug gangs all are heavily decked out in body armour. Then, they take their drug wars to the streets where innocent people are killed ib bloody shootouts…

The logic is this……if you are just an average person on the street wearing body armour…you’re up to no damn good…and represent a threat to safe and stable society.

However, these guys wearing body armour also have like machine guns and other weapons…..they don’t really give a damn about LAWs and other things like that to begin with…..
they are violent criminals. Getting charged or fined for wearing body armour would be like a walk in the park for them….seeing as how they run massive drug empires and kill people……

"So, what did YOU get charged with….."

At night on 19 Nov, approximately 75 (non)students from the New School, NYU, CUNY, and other university-factories in NYC marched from Washington to Union Squares and back in a gesture of solidarity with the wave of occupations that has swept the University of California system in response to the 32% tuition hike, budget cuts, and the reproduction of students as consumer-commodities ready to work for spectacle-subjects. The march saw crazy hooligans hanging banners off of buildings; masked rogues scattering trashcans, newspaper boxes and plastic barricades across Fifth Avenue; sexy dancing throughout the streets an attempted occupation of a Parsons art party as well as the good ol’ 65 5th ave. Unfortunately, the fun ended when cops managed to pierce the motley mob, arresting two after beating them on the sidewalk.

The two arrested were taken to the 6th Precint in the West Village, where much of the crowd ended up at the end of the night, dancing and singing out front, distributing pamphlets and glow sticks, and remaining until the two walked free.

— Statement from one of the organiziers —-

On November 19th we marched in solidarity with the occupiers in California reclaiming their universities in Santa Cruz, UCLA, Fresno, and Davis. While students are generally considered privileged members of society many of us will graduate deeply in debt and forced to integrate into a culture more alienating and atomized then ever before. At the New School and NYU we occupied both to protest these conditions and to unleash the tactic of occupation in hopes that it will become generalized, spreading from the universities to the factories, homes facing eviction, forests to be clearcut, and anywhere space is being stolen from the commons.
Occupation is a particularly effective tactic because it is both historically venerated by liberals after its historical use in student and labor movements, and affirms the very un-liberal principles of hatred of authority and private property.
As we reclaim space authority reveals its usually hidden violent face. For taking whats ours: the streets, the schools, the factories, the land, we will be beaten, gassed, and incarcerated. In the face of cop beating a student we see the violence that underlies the normality of capitalist existence. When we expose this violence and resist it head on we learn to resist more effectively, to create an affinity amongst the dispossesed, to open spaces for action and meaningful politics, to shift the weapon of crisis from their hands to ours.

DEMAND NOTHING
OCCUPY EVERYTHING

umm help. please. dont know what to do?
Okay there is this guy in my 4th block.
His name is Dustin.
Me and him were the best of friends like a month ago and I could talk to him about anything.
And he told me everything and anything.
Just the other day he broke up with his girlfriend and told me he really liked me!
I was starting to like him some what but not really because I only really considered him as a friend.
For the past two days he has been telling me he loves me and that he wants to be with me and that I’m so hot and blah blah blah.
Anyways getting to the point.
He’s been BITING me!! wtf?
He bit me the other day for the first time and it really hurt.
He bit me on the neck!
Then he bit me twice on the arm and I have a huge bruise on my arm now,
it looks horrible.
I have told him to stop several of times and no matter what I do he wont stop.
I have acually even hit him and he still wont stop.
I told my sister about it and showed her the bruise and she showed my parents and they threatned to call the school and get him into trouble for it.
I told them that I could handle it on my own and they said okay.
Problem is that I really don’t know what to do.
I already beg him to stop and he won’t.
I really don’t want to tell on him because we were such close friends and I dont want to get him into trouble.
I will feel bad.
But that seems like my only option at this point.
Any advise?
Along with the whole biting situation with Dustin.
i told him that i was transfering schools soon (because i am supposed too) and he told me if i did that then he would sneak into my room every night and rape me..but started laughing right after he said it.
I told him yah sure you will and you will meet my dad and his shot gun too.
But he just kept repeating it over and over again followed by a laugh.
should i take it seriously or just consider it as a joke?
(he does know where i live though)
what should i do about that?

umm.. yeah! you need to tell on him! he sounds psycho! why would he bite you?!? thats super weird… and a "close friend" wouldnt say something like he said.. you could be in danger, accept your parents’ help before it’s too late.

We spend a lot of time discussing mindset and focusing on what you do want instead of don’t want. We definitely feel that the most important step in achieving something is first to believe that it is possible. I am constantly running into information that substantiates this understanding, and I wanted to share this one with you.

“Focus more on your desire than on your doubt, and the dream will take care of itself. You may be surprised at how easily this happens. Your doubts are not as powerful as your desires, unless you make them so.”

Allow yourself to day dream and pretend and I think that you will be pretty astounded with what it does for you. Read this quote again, and imagine the Wright brother, or Walt Disney.

Walking downtown this evening evoked a deep sense of longing within my heart. An initially unidentified feeling of sadness. It crept over me quite suddenly, and I found myself wondering why. The sadness provoked thought in me that I haven’t felt in some time. I couldn’t help but wondering why life is the way it is. I was confronted with a birds eye view moment in which I began to question the often unquestioned view of existentialism. I walked by massive building in which men in suits buy and sell the world and, it seems, occasionally their souls. They congregate amongst other likeminded men and make decisions I won’t pretend to understand. The quandary of the situation comes, though, from those who sleep on the streets below. They are the ones in whose eyes I see desperation. Why? Why is there such a juxtaposition between these two peoples? Why don’t we care?

As I think about it, those that confound me even more are those everyday average joes who walk around unnoticed. The average man and women who walk through life, without so much as a kind word from anyone. They plow through the mess of life with no kind words, embraces or meaningful personal interactions to make the pain a little easier to handle. This struck me as I was sitting in my seat on the subway, completely cut off from all the other passengers, though I was sitting right beside them. No one looked each other in they eyes unless they knew them. We did not look at each other, say so much as a “good evening”, and certainly did not touch one another. Touching would be awkward wouldn’t it? Heaven forbid I touch someone for a minute and talk to them for an instant. If I did, I would realize that they are a person too. It’s better to remain cold and detached.

What I don’t understand about all of the aforementioned situations is why we remain so detached from one another. We are all hurting. We are all broken. All of our lives are messy. Why, then, must we pretend we are the only person in the world who matters? We are all people, living our lives together, breathing the same air yet we act as if our goals, wishes and dreams are all there is. The man in the large building wielding his overpriced business suit is no more valuable than the man sleeping on a grate outside.

We are all so inconceivably conceited, deceived to think we have the right to turn a blind eye to the brokenness outside the box of our own ambitions. We all lack the ability to fend for ourselves, regardless of how well we appear to be doing so. We all lack something vital to our very existence. A gaping hole lies in our soul and the longer we pretend it isn’t so, the more life’s woes tear the hole and make it bigger. I cannot fill this absence of love with anything but him. He is the what will make me whole. All he asks is that I love him.

As I sit and think about the utter pain and sadness in our world, my heart sinks and hurts. It aches for people, because I catch a taste of their agony. I know what will dull the pain and replace the agony of the desolate with hope, happiness and peace; I know the love. I experienced it on a daily basis, yet I am still capable of remaining silent and moreover closing my eyes to the chaos pain causes and plugging my ears to the cries of woe. Going through the motions of life becomes tiring and stale so quickly.

The knowledge of the saving love of Jesus Christ must produce results; it must feed the hungry, listen to the broken and embrace the bitter. This is the message of the gospel; this is why Jesus died-to seek and save the lost. We are ever so lost in the fogginess of a hurting city, but we must look to Jesus and remember he’s right there in the mess of life with us. All he asks is submission-giving in to his love and letting it change us as it will.

Amongst all the messy confusion of my thoughts, I find myself lost in translation. I know my faith must translate to tangible actions of love to others, but how? I lost my way somewhere between knowledge and works, and became comfortable with standing between the two, knowing but not doing as much as I’ve been called to. Where do you stand?

Please understand that my intentions are not to attack the rich or apathetic. This is merely a cross section of my thoughts at this moment in time. My intention is to provoke the same thought in you that God has stirred up in me.

Dead Cert stars Craig Fairbrass (EastEnders, Modern Warfare 2, Cliffhanger), Billy Murray (The Bill, EastEnders and also the producer on the project) plus Jason Flemyng (Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) and Steven Berkoff. Directed by former actor Steven Lawson.
In the film a gang of tough London gangsters get more than they bargained for when a group of businessmen make an offer to buy their club, the Inferno. They turn out to be nothing less than Vampires wanting their land back and turn viciously on the gangsters when their demands are not met.

(2009, USA, 88m)

★★★

In a future where humans live vicariously through robotic surrogates, an FBI agent must venture into the real world to solve a murder. An interesting premise is waylaid by indifferent direction and a sloppy, needlessly action-filled final act. Seek out the graphic novel source material instead.

Starring Bruce Willis, Radha Mitchell, Rosamund Pike, Boris Kodjoe, James Francis Ginty, James Cromwell, Ving Rhames, Jack Noseworthy, Devin Ratray. Directed by Jonathan Mostow; written by Michael Ferris, John D. Brancato; based on a graphic novel by Robert Venditti, Brett Weldele; produced by Max Handelman, David Hoberman, Todd Lieberman; original music by Richard Marvin; cinematography by Oliver Wood; film editing by Kevin Stitt.

(2009, USA, 95m)

★★★½

A wrongly convicted death-row inmate who becomes a player in a real-life first person shooter video game to win his freedom. Frenetic action-thriller with style to burn that is worth watching for the ultra-violent action scenes and an amusing supporting performance by Dexter’s Michael C. Hall.

Starring Gerard Butler, Amber Valletta, Michael C. Hall, Kyra Sedgwick, Logan Lerman, Terry Crews, Ludacris, Ramsey Moore, Aaron Yoo, John de Lancie, Milo Ventimiglia, Zoe Bell, John Leguizamo. Directed by Mark Neveldine, Brian Taylor; written by Mark Neveldine, Brian Taylor; produced by Gary Lucchesi, Tom Rosenberg, Skip Williamson, Richard S. Wright; original music by Robb Williamson, Geoff Zanelli; cinematography by Ekkehart Pollack; film editing by Peter Amundson, Fernando Villena, Doobie White.
