As I was looking on my Facebook feeds, I saw from one of my contacts an “Activate Your Faceboo

As I was looking on my Facebook feeds, I saw from one of my contacts an “Activate Your Facebook Account” thingy, it says that that contact of mine already activated his. So I clicked on it to see what’s going on (see the screen cap picture below) and stupidly clicked the “Click here to activate your account!!!”.

WARNING: It’s FAKE!

It was just an application, it’s not really something from Facebook. I thought it was something real but I was kinda bothered because if it were really from Facebook, it should’ve appeared in my Notification and I was really bothered by the Allow Access? notification before heading to the application, which usually appears when accessing apps and Facebook quizzes.

So I visited their page and saw nothing from it. I checked the Reviews tab and saw several reviews that says that it is fake. Someone also posted this link from the The Facebook Insider.

So guys, if ever you’ve installed this application, go immediately to their page and remove/block the application. Much better if you would change your password, just to be sure that your account and infos are safe.

We must be wary of what kind of applications that we’re using. I don’t know the purpose why those people created that app, I just hope it’s not something like leeching information from the users or stalking or something like that. Now that Facebook is overly famous nowadays, I hope it can still be a safe place for everyone.

Ideally, I would have written this last week (before Black Friday). Assuming, however, the reader still finds him or herself with a Christmas shopping list to fill, I thought I would come with a few suggestions. If you are like me, you may have initially dismissed the “Buy Local” posters that have popped up around town as a marketing ploy. That much it certainly is, but after a bit of research, I discovered there is more behind the concept.

Moscow and Pullman have experienced first-hand the controversy that can arise when big-box stores like Wal-Mart begin to court the market. One of the chief contentions is that chain-stores threaten the survival of local businesses by offering a wider variety of products at lower prices. If that were the extent of the argument, as a capitalist, I would have no reason to prefer independent over corporate enterprise.

In reality, there are many reasons for doing so. According to the Buy Local Moscow website, “research shows that locally-owned independent businesses form the core of a sustainable community.” This means that a far higher percentage of the money spent at local retailers stays in Moscow. They have no corporate headquarters or stockholders demanding a piece of the pie, but – in turn – are more likely to reinvest their profit in other local products and services:

“Remember that locally-owned businesses also buy local. They hire architects, designers, cabinet shops, sign makers and contractors for construction. Local accountants, insurance brokers, computer consultants, attorneys, advertising agencies help run the business. In addition, locally-owned retailers and distributors also carry a higher percentage of locally-produced goods than chains, meaning more jobs for local producers.”

Along with the economic benefits, buying local also supports Moscow’s health and character. By this, I mean that local business owners will naturally be more inclined to support, serve, and sponsor local charities, boards, and events. While there are exceptions on either side, where we choose to spend our money affects our collective quality of life beyond the products we bring home.

Rather than a proposal to boycott Wal-Mart, this is simply intended as an FYI by which I am educating myself in the process. The interested reader is encouraged to learn more on the website of Buy Local Moscow, which will be hosting Winter Fest next Thursday to showcase local businesses. Along with raffles, free samples, and entertainment, they will hold a drawing for five grand prizes worth $300 each. A prize card stamped at fourteen local businesses is required to enter the drawing, and I plan to do my own legwork this afternoon.

While I am out and about, I also plan to stop by the inaugural Alternative Giving Market of the Palouse. Today from 4-9pm, an array of local non-profits will be gathered in Moscow’s Friendship Square to raise awareness and offer a unique approach to Christmas shopping: by giving to local charities in the name of family and friends in lieu of traditional presents. To highlight the evening, the “Light Up the Night” parade will begin through downtown at seven o’ clock.

On a related note, Molly has put together the following Christmas Giving Guide through Activate. It is a short list of local businesses and global charities that fit into this context:

Brused Books (Pullman) – Fair trade section of crafts from Ten Thousand Villages

Pritchard Art Gallery (Moscow) – Jewelry and art made my local artisans

Moscow Food Co-op – Area’s largest selection of fair trade coffee and chocolates

World Vision – Donate to humanitarian aid and long-term community projects

Strongheart Fellowship – Jewelry that supports children affected by the war in Liberia

Charity: Water – Building wells in impoverished communities

NightLight – Jewelry that provides jobs for former sex workers in Thailand

Nest – Cooperative that empowers women through small business opportunities

Finally, check out the Free2Work website, a watch list that rates major corporations’ involvement in forced and child labor.

That said, for anyone arriving at the end of these ramblings who might (by some small chance) be shopping for yours truly over the coming weeks, I have created a wishlist over at Amazon.com, which is also giving away free daily downloads of holiday music through Christmas. Of course, many of the items on that list would be perfect candidates for local purchases.

Merry Christmas, and happy shopping!

While working on some code this afternoon I realised I had not used the correct namespace or assembl

While working on some code this afternoon I realised I had not used the correct namespace or assembly within the webpart I have been working on – so changed them, recompiled, and re-deployed the project (using WSP builder).

The page the webpart had been on then fell over in some style, meaning I couldn’t even see it to remove the offending legacy webpart.

The first tip given to me by a colleague was to view the page contents view – a trick you perform by issuing the following URL…

http://server/site/pages/mypage.aspx?contents=1

This presented an interface, allowing me to remove the legacy webpart from the page. The page was still broken though.

It turned out that re-deploying the new webpart with different namespaces irretrievably broke the existing WebPart page, so I had no option but to re-create it. I was still left with the problem of a new webpart that would not deploy.

We had to do two more things before the system righted itself;

Remove the existing webpart (whatever it’s name) from the Webpart Gallery in SharePoint

De-activate, and re-activate the solution package on the site collection

After doing the above, everything worked once more. A lesson for next time! (hopefully SharePoint 2010 will be here before then, and will have somewhat more stable tooling)

When Resonate Church was planted in Pullman, Washington just over two years ago, the diligent and prayerful planning of a few visionaries allowed them to hit the ground running toward the goal of establishing an effective, Christ-centered community. Through a “chance” meeting in Starbucks, my life was drastically affected through their calling. As often as I have been in Moscow since then, I have called that community my home.

Resonate’s slogan is that “exploring God is better in community.” It took me eighteen months and two journeys across the Atlantic to fully grasp the biblical truth in that simple statement. Once I did, I realized how sweet and necessary the fellowship of believers is, particularly with those who I had come to know through Resonate. For such a young church – both demographically and congregationally – Resonate is very good at the community they advertise. As the church grows, it continues to develop and perfect aspects of that community through activities like Village (small groups), Ethos (accountability groups) and ownership (Resonate’s take on membership). Having considered Resonate my home church since its inception, I plan to join dozens of my brothers and sisters next month in formally assuming that ownership.

One of the ministries that was launched simultaneously with Resonate was a subgroup of the church called Activate. From the beginning, we have striven to maintain a global perspective on the influence of the gospel. I remember a few of us sitting in the back room of Cafe Moro in the Fall of 2007 putting together a purpose statement for the group. Two years down the road, it is exciting – almost unbelievable – to see what God has enabled our group to accomplish. (I say “our” group, when in reality I was hiding in Norway during much of that time.) Among other things, nearly all of us have traveled abroad for the purpose of learning about and participating in God’s work around the world: Erika to India and Molly to Ethiopia this Summer, Kim is currently halfway through a three month trip to Kenya, and Megan will be leading another group of women to India this Winter. In fact, it was an email I received from Kim a few days ago that reminded me of our formative weeks together, and I trust she wouldn’t mind me sharing:

“I am so grateful for where God has taken my heart in the past two and a half years, particularly in regard to my passions for the world and serving the world. And I am blessed to be surrounded by like-minded people. I look back fondly, remembering those first couple of weeks we met for Activate at Cafe Moro. We didn’t have a clue what we were doing or where we were going, or even really what we wanted to happen. It is so sweet to me to see where God has taken that group of people in the time since then. You, Molly, Megan, and Erika will forever have such a sweet place in my heart because of those first few weeks. The trajectory of my life has literally changed as a result (and I think I say with confidence the same is true for Megan and Molly too). Crazy, huh?”

Crazy, indeed. When we haven’t been traveling the world, Molly – on top of organizing campus-wide awareness campaigns for things like fair trade and human trafficking – has taken the helm in leading a growing number of “Activators” in our weekly meeting in Pullman. Last year, Resonate leaped across the state border to plant a second congregation in Moscow. Seeing that God has equally blessed that effort, I was led to consider whether Activate should follow suit. I proposed the idea to Molly, and tomorrow a new group of us will be assembling in Moscow to share in growing the global vision.

Apparently, because it was my idea, I get to “lead” this meeting, which has brought me back to our original purpose statement and what we are called to accomplish as a small group of local believers. While “going out” is the ultimate embodiment of the Great Commission, we meet on a weekly basis because we believe there is work to be done right here in Pullman and Moscow. Much of that work consists of education and prayer, and as I prepare to lead others in doing so, I find myself wrestling with an obvious challenge. In educating ourselves, we are tempted to become overwhelmed and discouraged by the rampant poverty, violence, and persecution happening in many parts of the world. What, in heaven’s name, can we possibly hope to do about it? It was with this question in mind that I was reading through Ecclesiastes and came across the following two passages:

“Then I returned and considered all the oppression that is done under the sun: and look! The tears of the oppressed, but they have no comforter – on the side of their oppressors there is power, but they have no comforter. Therefore I praised the dead who were already dead, more than the living who are still alive. Yet, better than both is he who has never existed, who has not seen the evil work that is done under the sun.” Ec. 4:1-3

“If you see the oppression of the poor, and the violent perversion of justice and righteousness in a province, do not marvel at the matter; for high official watches over high official, and higher officials are over them. Moreover the profit of the land is for all; even the king is served from the field.” Ec. 5:8,9

Starting with the second passage, it is important for me to remember that God has established hierarchies of authority for a purpose. The wickedness of man does not invalidate that system, and I am told not to marvel at violence and injustice. The first passage is even more difficult to swallow, but what is being lamented is the lack of a comforter (both for the oppressed and the oppressor, depending on how you read it). Knowing that the Holy Spirit is our Comforter (Jn. 14), I am reminded again of the Great Commission, where Jesus says:

“All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Mt. 28:18-20

For all the good that can come from international aid and peacekeeping missions, it is also important for me to remember that only Jesus saves. Like we see when Jesus feeds the five thousand, hungry people will want food before they want truth – daily bread before the Bread of Life. But until Christ is preached and believed, anything short of that will only serve to perpetuate the hopeless state of those in need. Education and prayer on global issues must therefore build on the presupposition that all authority really has been given to Jesus. My initial question then evolves from what we can do about the world’s problems to what Christ can do through us to spread good news to all the world, starting in Moscow, Idaho.

:: SOLUCIÓN ::
