Been a bit slack on my blog the last week or so. Other then a V cycle class on Tuesday I haven’t done anything else other then work. The industry I am in always gets busy on the lead up to Christmas so I have been doing overtime to ease the burden. So far the past three days I have clocked up 36 hours already, even now I am up at 5am and probably won’t get home until 7am tonight after a 12 hour shift at the fun factory!

My next post will probably be next Tuesday, should have seen a film or two by then and hopefully found time to do the gym a couple of times as well!

As I’m getting my daughter ready for school, one question always comes up. It’s not what you might think it would be … She’s not concerned about when or who is picking her up. She’s not concerned about what’s in her lunch. The question I hear every morning is …

Do we have time to play tree tag?

Every morning that we get to her school early, we always start a tree tag game. It starts with my daughter and I, and builds momentum up to about 20 kids by the time the school bell rings.

It’s a great kick-start to the day when I see how happy her schoolmates are, to see the game going on as they arrive for school.

Remember to try and get up and move around. It might not be feasible to start a “tree tag” game in the office, but at least you might be able to get up off your … chair while talking on the phone. If you have the room, see if you can walk around your office area while talking. It’s a small step to being as active as you can.

30 minutes a day is the goal.

I was with Chris in our local shopping centre. We were meeting up with his mom because we had said we’d look after his little brother for the day. He seemed really happy to see us but Chris’ mom didn’t look well. She looked like she was quite ill. We brought Chris’ little brother into a big department store where everyone liked to hang out.

Chris had to go to the toilet so it was just me and his little brother. But then he said he needed to go to the toilet too. He ran off to the bathrooms and I realised I shouldn’t just wait for him to come back, I should wait outside the toilets. I legged it up to the toilets like it was an emergency or something and I was out of breath when I got there.

I met a girl who I used to go to school with but we’d had a fight and hadn’t spoken in years. She was wearing our uniform from work so I asked her had she gotten a job in the cinema. She started going on and on about it and how much she loved it and how great it was that we’d be working together and so on. I couldn’t get away from her but when I finally did, both Chris’ brother was back from the toilet and hadn’t noticed me standing outside.

This is where it gets kind of disturbing. I went to join Chris’ brother back in the main part of the shop. He was sitting on the ground with his arms around his knees looking really really scared. It was clear something had happened but I didn’t know what. I ran up to him and when I reached him I found out that these guys who were sitting behind him had poured something on him, like oil but I’m not sure what exactly it was. I picked him up and held him in my arms while absolutely screaming at the guys. Chris came up at this point and told me to leave them as cleaning up his brother was the priority. I knew he was right so we took him back to the bathrooms.

The dream skips a bit then because the next bit has me meeting Chris on his break from work. It looked more like McDonald’s than a cinema though. I had bought chocolate nuggets (and spent ages picking them out) to share with him on his break. Our manager and another worker were standing beside us though so I offered some chocolate to them. Chris made a face at me as if to say I was sucking up to the manager so I stuck my tongue out at him. Our manager took some chocolate but the other woman said she had gone off chocolate ever since she had gotten a bad box of it one Christmas. I think that was the end of it.

I was so frightened for Chris’ brother, I woke up feeling horrible. I guess even though it was just a dream I felt responsible for it.

Dreamer xxx

“Hey San, do you have time to got through the rebate file with me this afternoon?” Mia, an intern from the ‘indirect’ procurement department, leaned on our office door. She waited patiently as I checked my outlook agenda.

“Hmm, yep. I have time after 15:00. I am meeting Ami at 14:00 to work on the S2C contract updates. It shouldn’t take us more than an hour to wrap it up.” “Uh, how about today at 11:00?” “Weekly team meeting!” “Ok, can we make it 15:30 then? I have a meeting before that.” “Sure, I’ll send you an invitation!”

Mia gave me an enthusiastic thumbs up and ‘pilgered’ back to the other side of the corridor, beyond the copy machines, where the Indirect Procurement department was located.

Where is Friday?!

“Ach ja! Glorious Monday!! Wouldn’t it be so nice if ‘he’ would trade his monotonous M-O-N with a friendly F-R-I?!”

I yawned while Sally peaked from behind her computer, exhaled loudly and nodded. “Yep, or a thrilling T-H-U in our case, right?” “Hmm?……Thu?!” “… As in Thursday?” “Oh ja, klar doch!!!” I smacked my forehead. “See, that is exactly what I mean! I am a Monday-rainman! As a matter of fact, on Mondays, I feel like Robinson Crusoe on his island. Waiting for Friday!” “So, Thursday in our case, right?” “Arrg… .”

The clock = The enemy

Yes, indeed, some days seem so much longer than others. Although you have a mountain of work, i.e. follow-up meetings, wrap-up meetings, weekly meetings, answering e-mails, chase after suppliers, call other divisions of the company to receive the most recent data, you can’t help but check the tiny digital display on the bottom right of your computer screen. In those moments, time is your greatest enemy. Or is it?

Just then, as I starred hypnotically at the digital 9-:-2-1, a brilliant flashback stroke me at once. Didn’t Rowan Atkinson, aka. Mr. Bean say the following phrase in his Kermit-the-frog-voice once in a New Years’ episode?

Rule 8.1.: Time flies when you are having fun!

Time flies when you are having fun!

He did, right? In other words, the key to survive long days in the office is the right motivation. Fun. By right motivation, I do not necessarily mean monetary compensation, but more an emotional high. In short, you should try to have fun and amuse yourself as good as you can!

It sounds so easy, but as a matter of fact, it is not without difficulty. Or is it? Actually the brilliance of motivating yourself lies in its simplicity! There are so many countless ways to motivate/amuse yourself:

Rule 8.2.: Motivate yourself by creating funny passwords!

When you work in a big company, you are most likely to work with many programs that are under strict security supervision. So, whenever you need to enter programs or create accounts the system asks you for a password, which you will be using a lot. If you chose a funny password you can cheer yourself up EVERY time you log in!

Big fan!

Hm. I admit, it is a bit geeky. However, fact is, it worked. More or less. As for me, I am a huge fan of south park, in particular of that little guy, who has a coffee addiction and fears the under-pants-gnomes… . Get the idea?! Brilliant!

Another important thing is to keep active physically.

Rule 8.3.: Move around as much as you can.

C'mon, lazy bones, keep hoppin'!

If you are stuck behind the computer all day, then you are bound to get tired and bored in no time. So, why don’t you make it a habit to hop to the printer on one leg and return on the other if you give print jobs? Out of personal experience I can say that it works. Just make sure that noone like big boss Rick sees you. Another popular exercise we do is called ‘coffee rounds’. Not only is it a social act of camaraderie, but also somewhat of an exercise for your biceps and triceps, depending on the volume of the order, naturally.

However, if you worked off your entire what-to-do-today checklist and it is still not time to scamper off, there is always the office game! (Curious about that? You should be and will read about it later this week).

In conclusion, let me get you in on a little secret:

Rule 8.4.: You control how long your days are!

One of my senior colleagues, Michael, put it once in a nice way:

You can not put more days in your life, but you can put more life in your days!

I think this is something we should truly consider when we check our watches the next time!

New research published on BMJ.com finds that older people who walk slowly are more likely to die fro

New research published on BMJ.com finds that older people who walk slowly are more likely to die from cardiovascular disease than those who walk faster.

The authors say the findings underscore the essential role of fitness in preserving life and function in older age.

“These findings show that assessment of motor performances in older people with simple measures such as walking speed can be performed easily and that the role of fitness in preserving life and function in older age is important,” the report notes.

A team of researchers from France studied the relationship between low walking speed and the risk of death in older people. Their findings are based on the five-year monitoring of 3,208 men and women aged 65 to 85.

Participants in the lowest third of walking speed at the start of the study had a 44 percent increased risk of death compared to those in the upper third. And, those in the lowest third of walking speed have a three times increased risk of cardiovascular death than those who walked faster.

For more information, see the report on bmj.com.

As this study clearly shows, exercise can help you throughout your lifetime. Even when you’ve hit that age that it does not seem to help anymore, every bit of cardiovascular activity you perform keeps you healthier. Loved ones who are still able to walk but are still stuck in this mindset will be excited to hear these new findings. But you may not have time to accompany mom or dad on even short walks; a companion caregiver from Home Instead Senior Care is here for your loved one.
Home Instead Senior Care will provide outstanding caregivers to help your loved one with personal care, incidental travel, companionship, medication reminders, light housekeeping, and even meal preparation.
However today I felt ok so went to the Gym and did a Nike Training Class. I really enjoy them as they have a mix of everything in them and really leave you feeling like you have done a workout.

No cinema this week I don’t think. The only new release showing at my local is that Twilight film, Didn’t like the first so probably won’t bother with this one.

Also my neighbors are peeing me off, but that’s a story for another day!

So for now that’s all I have time to write, see ya.

Sunday November 22, 2009

Today there are 939 single family homes for sale in Riverside. Of these 428 are short sales, 342 are Standard, and 157 are REO, 11 Probate, and 1 is an Auction listing. And about half of the active listings are over priced which leaves us with less than 500 to choose from and most of those are short sales.

The homes in decent condition and priced correctly have an offer if not multiple offers on them.

We need some better inventory!

1,094 are currently accepting Back Up Offers or Pending.

345 homes are listed as on Hold. In this market Hold usually means they haven’t opened escrow yet but they have so many offers they don’t want to see anymore. Some may be on Hold for any number of other reasons also.

642 homes are listed as Sold since 10/01/09.

For the first time, Midtown will host an ice skating rink! Beginning November 20th and running through January 18th, the Midtown ice rink is on 20th Street between K Street and J Street. There will be staff in attendance around the clock at the rink for security and, guess what? The rink is open rain or shine.

Admission to skate is $8 for adults, $5 for children (12 and under), and skate rental is $2. The rink is open to the public 10AM-10PM every day. (Of course rink hours may vary on holidays.)

Now we know you’re thinking, what about parking? (It’s because we thought that too– having to find parking has actually deterred us from events in the past.) Parking is available anytime for $5 at 1161 20th Street Garage (enter on 20th between K and L St), evenings after 5PM and weekends for $2 at 17th Street East End Garage (enter on 17th between Capitol Ave and L St), and evenings after 5PM and weekends at the parking lots at 2220 J Street and 1815 K Street. We know, that was a lot of “and”s.

Click here or call 916.752.4644 10AM-10PM for more information.

Now go teach the kiddos a sport that we Sacramentans don’t get to enjoy very often. We’ll see you there!
