Facebook Starting to Roll Out More Efficient Ads Manager: ” A few weeks ago, Facebook told us

Facebook Starting to Roll Out More Efficient Ads Manager: ”

A few weeks ago, Facebook told us it would start testing a new ads manager and bulk uploader soon. Now, some advertisers are starting to see the new version of the ads manager, which providers much easier campaign management, in-line editing, search, and easier navigation.

As you can see by clicking on the image below, the new interface allows for much more efficient campaign management than the current ads manager. This will be welcome news for advertisers who either manage multiple in-house or client campaigns. Choosing a campaign at left will load all active ads on the right. However, whenever ads are edited, they’ll still need to be reapproved by the Facebook Ads team.

Here’s how the new ads manager looks:

How were advertisers chosen to participate in the test rollouts so far? “A small group of advertisers from our active advertiser base was randomly chosen to participate,” according to Facebook. “We will roll the new Ads Manager out to all advertisers over time.” The FAQ for Facebook’s new ad manager can be found here.

Facebook says it will also soon start testing a new tool for advertisers to bulk upload many ads at once, instead of manually creating them in the standard campaign manager or through third-party scripts. Agencies, app developers, and direct response advertisers who often want to target and test hundreds or thousands of specific creatives will soon be able to do so much more easily.

(Thanks to Sam Goldfarb for sending in the above screenshot.)

One of the darker aspects of the company I work for is that as we need to make money, we need more c

One of the darker aspects of the company I work for is that as we need to make money, we need more clients. Clients = money. With me? OK. To gain clients, one needs to entice them with morsels of what they want, in our case media coverage. Like any good private company we have a sales department who are accustomed to the evils of what amounts to unsolicited email shots at potential customers. With so many requests for additional contacts and unsubscriptions from uninterested parties, we use the Contacts system built in to Active Directory. Still with me? Not asleep?

To send a mail shot, we send one email to a distribution group that links to our relevent contact database. Now and again we get a request to add a large number of contacts to our family, sometimes from current clients, sometimes for potential business. We have, or rather I have, always used ADManager, a software suite designed to make working with Active Directory a but more painless and the ability to create reports etc. Bulk actions is particularly useful. You load up a csv file full of details, stick it in to the relevent section and Robert’s your mothers’ brother. Our licence recently expired so I took it upon myself to write a Visual Basic script that would do this without spending all that money on a pokey licence. For the record, the license currently stands at $795 for the professional edition. I figure that I can whip something up for free that would do what all that money would.

It gets a bit heavy here so non codies can skip to the bottom.

The first thing I shall admit here is that my knowledge of programming extends to writing simple batch files, even simpler html and a dribble of SQL. VBscripting has always confused me with its Dim strings/integers etc and object based logics. I didn’t know what I was looking at or what a certain line did or even meant. So, Google, what can you do for me? Well, first hit was for “add contacts to AD VBscript” or something similar, which led me to a Certain Site which held a plethora of VBscripting information. As a site, it’s not the easiest to navigate to find what you are looking for but I found it popped near the top of almost every Google search I made for various VBscript things. Recommended. Anyway, the author Guy provides many sample scripts to work from which have taught me everything I needed to know to get my script working. Hurrah for Guy!

I’ll talk about the layout of the script before I get in to its inner workings so you can follow it through. In a nutshell, the script will:

Create the objects and strings for the script to use

Connect to Active Directory

Suck the data from an excel spreadsheet

Link the data with the objects

Input the data in to the relevant Active Directory objects

Input the newly created contacts in to the desired Active Directory group

In any VBscript, you can start by listing the strings, integers and constants. This will be a list of the VB objects you will be using in the script. The important thing to know is that these are completely arbitrary. They could be anything. strDuck. objWang. Whatever. Obviously calling them relevant things will help later on. My first port of call was to list these after “Option Explicit”. This means that only the explicitly defined objects/strings/etc can be used in the script. Without this you can stick and object in willy-nilly but if you accidentally make a spelling mistake somewhere later on, then it can cause all sorts of hell. I strongly recommend you use Option Explicit.

The next step was to define the string variables. A string is a set of characters, in my case email addresses and locations in Active Directory. The strOU you can see on the left was “OU=Morning List, OU=Client Email Lists ,”. The space and comma is necessary as it will have the rest of the LDAP path defined later. The group and the path to the excel spreadsheet I was talking about is also defined here.

Lets have a doughnut, as it is Doughnut Week this week.

Finished? OK then. The ability to bind to Windows objects as well as many others, is what makes VBScripting so damn useful to sysadmins and is the main reason I am forcing myself to understand it. It does what so many expensive pieces of software does but for free. Well, free unless you count the hours of work that might go in to writing one. I am sure that a VBScripting guru could scribble what I have taken ages to make, in a few minutes but from small acorns… The Set verb attaches a reference from an object to a variable. For example, my arbitrary object ObjContainer is Set to “LDAP://” & strOU _” which is the LDAP root (or the root of the domain) followed by the strOU string which I defined earlier. This gives a full path to an OU in the local domain.

Next we open the excel spreadsheet by calling the Workbooks.Open command which should link to any “workbook” object (but I used excel. I do not know how it would work with Notes or OOO.org). After this object is in memory, the script parses the excel file and extracts data in this case, row by row. The spreadsheet has row 1 as the column headers (which are the string objects such as strEmail etc). This is used to attach the data to objects in the string. The second row is simply numbers to help us see which colum corresponds to which letter. Its easier than counting the number of letters across the top of the spreadsheet. We simply tell the script to start parsing on row 3.

Once the excel data is in memory, the script “writes” this information to a contact created using the objContainer.Create command followed by “Contact” telling AD to create an object in the contact class and fill it with the other stuff we pass it. Understand? Keep following, it gets easier I think. Finally I add the newly created contact in to a group defined earlier. What is useful here is to use the objContact.ADspath which uses the current AD path in memory and assumes that is where the group object sits. Easier than fetching the entire LDAP path again.

The next bit is really clever. “IntRow = intRow + 1″ This sets a previously defined integer to plus one. The script then loops from “Do Until”. In this case intRow is which row to search for data. Adding 1 here means it searches the next row down. The “Do Until” command comes in to its own as it will continue to parse until the row is empty. Following that the script will complete.

I am quite surprised at how challenging it is to describe the logic of this script. Once I understood it and the processes and links, the whole thing took on a strange sense of calm. A great deal of the script is simply referring to itself and yet it still allows us to perform pretty much anything in the Windows/MS Server environment. Obviously I am going to post the full script at the bottom but I must give full props to Guy the scripter from Glamorgan who taught me everything I know about VBScript (which is very little) and a full disclaimer that it has little to no error handling and probably is not 100% solid. I was going to mention error handling but I think I’ve gone on enough and I need to learn more about it anyway.

One final note: this script was written in great haste to insert 1600 new contacts for the next day. It became apparent that AD 2003 supports a maximum of 5000 recipients per distribution group. The extra tipped our total over the edge and failed to send to a lot of people. Irony?

Essential Software: Notepad ++ (or a similar program that recognises language syntax. Remember to select Visual Basic from the Language menu), Excel (or possibly another workbook program)

Our Business Office, I'm the clown in the back of the office with his thumbs up

Here are some highlights from last week:

We operated at a loss last week, posting a little over a thousand dollars below our break even point. We still have plenty of time in April to catch up, but needless to say I am quite concerned over it. Thats why I get to be part of the so called drama department.

Our Ad manager Dan got his hair cut. I can confirm that he looks quite sexy

Kate thinks she is somewhere in the jungle looking for jobs, all I can say is good luck.

I am still without a job and pretty much plan on going right to the unemployment office upon graduation to collect. I’m pretty sure that is not going to work so I continue to try to find something decent (not in the jungle though).

That’s about all the fun from here on this cold Tuesday afternoon. To quote a strange saying that psychopath came up with:

“Stay Bless”

Today I was approved as an Amazon Affiliate. I do not think it is a very big deal to “get in

Today I was approved as an Amazon Affiliate. I do not think it is a very big deal to “get in” the circle. I didn’t even have to give them my IQ or blood type. Whew. I put three ads on Facebook with links to Amazon.com with my affiliate tracking ID embeded in the link. I have received 11 clicks today per my Facebook Ad Manager but my Amazon Affiliate page only shows 2. So, if by tomorrow that number hasn’t grown, I am going to assume I messed up with the links and am going to have to redo the ads. Stay tuned for that…

My ads are pretty simple. I put out two ads for the new Kindle and one for Amazon.com Gift Cards. According to their web site, affiliates receive a 6% commission on gift cards and 10% on the Kindle.

Based on the cost per click of my facebook ads (Avg. CPC = $0.57) it will be hard to make gift cards pay for themselves. For example, a $20 gift card would only pay out $1.20 in commission. That means that one in three clicks would have to buy a minumum of of $20 dollars in gift cards just for me to break even… not good numbers I believe.
