<title><![CDATA[Like Some New Language]]></title>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>The say, &#8220;write what you know&#8221;. While I&#8217;m sure I&#8217;m not the first, I tend to agree. On the surface &#8211; of course &#8211; this seems quite obvious as writing about something you know nothing about would be a tremendously difficult task. But as with any great pearl of wisdom, the true meaning is tucked away.</p>
<p>For me, &#8220;what you know&#8221; is not necessarily what you know, but rather what you feel and who you are. To me, if you&#8217;re not writing &#8211; or less specifically, creating &#8211; &#8220;what you know&#8221;, then you don&#8217;t stand a chance of creating anything of great meaning. It is from this &#8220;what you know&#8221; that great art is spawned and that unique voices are born.</p>
<p>And it doesn&#8217;t matter what you&#8217;re creating: music, sculpture, dance, math and advertising all require that unique voice to be heard. What sets the masters apart in any of these fields is that at one point it was like they were speaking their own language.</p>
<p>Sometime in the &#8217;60s, (I say sometimes because it&#8217;s nearly impossible to get exact times with this guy, but I digress) Jim Morrison wrote:</p>
<p><i>I wanna tell you about Texas Radio and the Big Beat<br />
Soft-driven, slow and mad, like some new language</i></p>
<p>These words have stuck with me since I first heard the songs, but it wasn&#8217;t until I read <i>Ignore Everybody</i>, by <a href="http://www.gapingvoid.com" TARGET="_blank">Hugh MacLeod</a>, that I really found the right context for them. One of the many topics that MacLeod explores in this brilliant book is the idea of a new a language from the point of view of the young artist, creating, without pressure or expectation, and establishing &#8220;a new language that other people could also speak to the world with&#8221;.</p>
<p>What Morrison is describing is a feeling that I&#8217;m sure most of us have experienced. That feeling when you hear a song for the first time and something about it stops you in your tracks. It&#8217;s happened to me countless times, but one of the most vivid was hearing Kurt Cobain perform &#8220;Where Did You Sleep Last Night?&#8221; on Nirvana&#8217;s <i>Unplugged</i> record <i>(see below for the clip)</i>. It was a tape at the time, so I had to stop and rewind again and again because I couldn&#8217;t get enough. There was intensity and pain in his voice that I&#8217;d never before encountered. His somewhat-flawed vocals spoke to me and yet I couldn&#8217;t really understand them. It was truly like as if he was speaking a different language.</p>
<p>And in a sense, he was. Like him or not, Cobain changed the way the language of music is spoken. Just like Lennon &#38; McCartney and many others did before him. And the way the Simpsons writers changed comedy, the Google guys chaged search algortihms and Lee Clow changed advertising.</p>
<p>They didn&#8217;t, necessarily, do it by being better than their competition. They did it by writing what they knew in a language that was all their own, but would soon become the language that the audience &#8211; and the world &#8211; spoke with them. </p>

<i>Please, take the time to check out this clip of Nirvana&#8217;s performance, as you can watch the transformation occur in Cobain. Pay close attention at around 4:46. It&#8217;s as if he slips out of the trance for a second. When he opens his eyes, either he&#8217;s looking at your soul or you&#8217;re seeing his. Either way it&#8217;s a very intense moment.</i></p>

As duas empresas teriam finalizado o texto a pouco tempo e estariam prontas para finalizar as negociações.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="color:#888888;">De acordo com o IDGNow!, os termos incluem o uso do Bing, ferramenta de busca, nas páginas de pesquisa do Yahoo!, que recebeira 88% da receita dos anúncios.</span></p>
<p><span style="color:#888888;">No mês passado, as empresas perderam o prazo para mostrar detalhes do acordo. Mas, o prazo foi estendido sem uma data específica. Para ser colocado em prática, ele precisa de aprovação de agências reguladoras da Europa e dos Estados Unidos.<br />

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>First off, just in case you don&#8217;t know &#8211; I used to work  for a production company called propaganda (<em>you may remember it</em>).</p>
<p>A I worked as a creative producer, I worked my way up from being a runner in the TV department of AMV.</p>
<p>I had a very close working relationship with all of the directors, we spent hours working on scripts treatments proposals we won probably one job in three which is quite high….</p>
<p>What I found most intriguing &#38; generally very annoying was that everybody on the set from the makeup artists, crew catering, the agency, the client to the spotty teenage runner believed they were the director. Genuinely they felt that every single time they open their mouth they were going to provide wisdom and insight into exactly how to set up the shot and effectively work the storyboard and make a great Ad.</p>
<p>Part of my job on the day was shielding my director from this torrent of unsolicited advice.</p>
<p>One day, I really was working with one of the biggest names in the industry in the Nineties. There we were up at Pinewood Studios spending about £1 million on the day, and many millions in post.</p>
<p>I was very keen to see how the crew would relate to this director but more importantly how the agency and the clients would treat the director.</p>
<p>The suggestion is almost came thicker and faster than ever. Generally dressed up with compliments about other Ads &#38; feature films the director had been chosen by.</p>
<p>Over lunch, the director and I walked up to the back lot and took a sneaky peak at the set of Fifth Element. The director and I were comparing shooting commercials and shooting feature films the studio system versus the client system. What he told me was, &#8220;I am paid to be the fall guy on a TV commercial because everybody wants to be the director on the shoot, but when we get into postproduction -  nobody wants to be me,  and certainly not the editor.&#8221;</p>
<p>I asked him ~ you&#8217;ve got this far how did you do it?</p>
<p>His response was simple and to the point</p>
<p>&#8220;I tell them it&#8217;s a great idea, but were running short on time and money. &#8211; if we have any time at the end of the day we can work on the shot then&#8221;</p>
<p>My reply was, &#8220;really?&#8221;</p>
<p>His reply was &#8220;least said easiest to mend&#8221;</p>
<p>Three days later we were in the edit suite and not one of the suggested shots had worked their way in and nobody had any interest in the first assembly or rough cut</p>
<p>By the end of week two</p>
<p>Everybody was back with their opinions</p>
<p>So the moral of the story is:</p>
<p>At a point of Genesis with an idea everybody believes they should have their own input</p>
<p>At the point of creation ~ there should only be one voice</p>
<p>At the point of assembly  ~ there should only be one voice</p>
<p>At the point of delivery ~ there should only be one voice</p>
<p>This is just a little bit too ideal, and maybe only Stanley Kubrick achieve this</p>
<p>It&#8217;s very easy to have an opinion when actually it&#8217;s not going to be counted or realised</p>
<p>It&#8217;s even easier to make suggestions comments and have opinions when effectively looking at what is almost the finished article</p>
<p>when you act like this, your not the Auteur ~ your the critique&#8230;.</p>
<p>~ and you know all too well what they say about opinions</p>
<p>Opinions are like assholes</p>
<p>Everybody&#8217;s got one</p>

But recent ad campaigns by MSF <a href="http://duckrabbit.info/blog/2009/08/msf-cineama-advert-have-your-say/">have gotten out of hand</a>. Take the latest example, &#8220;Girl&#8221;:</p>

<p>Perhaps the economic downturn has had a negative impact on giving to MSF, precipitating a need to use such a jarring advert that would compel donors to give in great numbers. I don&#8217;t deny the story they tell in the advert could really have happened (in fact, the makers remark the advert uses real audio recorded in an MSF field site). However, after seeing the previous (and related) advert, &#8220;Boy&#8221;, <a href="http://duckrabbit.info/blog/2009/08/msf-cineama-advert-have-your-say/comment-page-1/#comment-6373">I commented</a>: </p>
<blockquote><p>as someone who has spent some time in Tanzania and Malawi, I come back to the US to answer questions from friends about what it’s really like in Africa and if it’s as bad as everyone says it is, or *gulp* worse. i think that viewers might perceive the advert to be about a place in Africa and that it would continue to distort their view of a place that isn’t always tragic (though i understand it is very much so in places where MSF works). i just think the advert furthers this whole “dark continent” nonsense.

<title><![CDATA[Create a vibrant camera ad in Photshop]]></title>

<p>Colors has always been a best friend of a designer. Vibrant colors, mixed with layer styles brings out a new dimension of amazement. I have always been wanting to create an advertisement for a camera. You can seek inspiration from different directions. In this tutorial, I shall guide you through the basics of glow lines and adjustment layers. Once you start experimenting with colors, your interest in digging deep will just escalate to a different level. The vibrant look and a remarkable message it gives out will definitely appear appealing. So, Lets start off creating the Ad.</p>
<p><!--more--><strong>Step 1</strong></p>
<p>Open Photoshop and create a New File with a resolution of  1920 x 1200. I personally prefer creating designs on a widescreen resoltion because most of the newer computers come with a widescreen display. The 4:3 and other proportionally sized screen are silently creeping into obscurity.</p>
<p><strong>Step 2:</strong></p>
<p>OK, after you have created the canvas, the next thing to do is search for a stock image of a camera. Make sure you select the perspective view, like I have used. I found mine on Google Images <a href="http://www.mobilewhack.com/images/Fuji_S6000fd_front_angled_1.jpg" target="_blank">here</a> (coutesy FujiFilm). Next Paste it on the canvas as shown below.</p>

<p><strong>Step 3:</strong></p>
<p>Now, If you can observe, the camera seems to get an invisible source of light. We need to darken some of the surface of the camera so that it appears as though we are creating this ad in a dark region. We need to add 2 Adjustment layers.</p>
<p>Go to Layer&#62;Adjustment Layer&#62;Curves and change the settings as shown below:</p>

<p>Now, Go to same adjustment layer option and click on Levels and change the settings as shown below. These adjustment layer increases the contrast of the dark pixels and decreases that of the light ones, giving the image a dark, authentic look.</p>

<p>After applying the above adjustments, the image will look like this:</p>

<p><strong>Step 4</strong></p>
<p>Now, we need a floor to place the camera on. Search for a grunge texture background. I downloaded mine <a href="http://alexjway.files.wordpress.com/2009/04/grunge_texture_by_darkrose42_stock.jpg" target="_blank">here</a>. Paste the texture layer onto the canvas we are working on. Rotate it clockwise 90 degrees and using the Transformation Tool (CTRL + T) or Edit&#62;Transform&#62;Perspective, resize the image as shown below.</p>

<p><strong>Step 5</strong></p>
<p>So far, so good. Now with the texture in the background, the camera looks a bit separated. So, create a new layer (underneath the camera layer) and using soft brush create a shadow for the camera as shown below:</p>

<p>Now, we need to darken the edges of the camera. We shall use the Burn Tool (it appears as a Hand icon on the left taskbar, with sponge tool and dodge tool).</p>
<p>Using the burn tool and a brush of size 50px and 0% harness, darken the edges of the camera. This might take a little bit of experimenting to get the final image right. It must look similar to the one shown below, notice the difference from the above picture.</p>

<p><strong>Step 6</strong></p>
<p>Now, let us add a curves adjustment layer to the background texture.Select the background layer in the layer&#8217;s palette and go to Inage&#62;Adjustment&#62;Curves and change the settings as shown below:</p>

<p>I suggest you to create groups and name the layers and placing them in these groups, just to make sure you don&#8217;t face any problems later <img src='http://s.wordpress.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':)' class='wp-smiley' /> </p>
<p>Now, the image after all the above modifications should look similar to this:</p>

<p>As you can see, there is a crack (on the texture) beside the camera. I didn&#8217;t quite like its presence. So, using the clone tool, I removed it. If you don&#8217;t know how to use the clone tool, No problem. The crack wont damage much of the appearance of the final image.</p>

<p><strong>Step 7:</strong></p>
<p>Now comes the important part, Adding vibrant glow lines to the tutorial. Before starting this off, I suggest you check my previous article on <a href="http://richbugger.wordpress.com/2009/09/25/awesome-glow-effect-in-photoshop/" target="_blank">How to Create Glow lines</a> and then come back to this. Doing this would make your job easier.</p>
<p>Create a New layer and name it glow-green. Click on the brush tool and select a soft brush of green color and size&#8230; of say, 5px and press F5 to bring up the brush panel. Now tick the following settings:</p>

<p><strong>Step 8:</strong></p>
<p>Select the pen tool (make sure, the paths option is selected on the taskbar above &#8211; use the below pic for reference) . Now, create a path as shown below.</p>

<p><strong>Step 9:</strong></p>
<p>Right Click on the path and select Stroke Path and select Brush as the option and make sure &#8216;Simulate Pressure&#8217; is ticked.</p>

<p>Now go on creating different paths by using different brush sizes. This time, untick the simulate pressure option. This will create a bold line. Use the below image as reference.</p>

<p><strong>Step 10:</strong></p>
<p>Now, we need to add glow to those lines. Double click on the glow-green layer and select Outer Glow options and change the settings as shown below. You can experiment as you desire at this point.</p>

<p><strong>Step 11:</strong></p>
<p>From here on, its all about repeating the above couple steps. Using different brush sizes and colors, and creating new layers for each color, draw different paths and apply stroke as you wish.</p>
<p>Step 12:</p>
<p>To my final image, I added a few more color strokes and then using a brush tool of a bigger size, I redrew the paths using the respective colors in a new layer and changed the blending mode of that layer to Softlight/Overlay.</p>
<p>Then, i downloaded a sunlight picture (shown below) and placed it above the camera layer. Then, I changed the blending mode to screen and erased the unnecessary areas.</p>

<p>At this point of time, My layer palette looks something like this. This is just for your reference. It might change depending upon how you have followed the process.</p>
