Dans le domaine des ordinateurs portables de luxe il y avait Sony et Apple et maintenant Dell.

Un nouveau marché a pris place dans le domaine des pc portables. Plusieurs marques développent leur laptop de luxe. Adamo, le nouveau laptop de Dell. Dell a voulu se distinguer en donnant une nouvelle perception esthétique des pc.

Dell cherche a proposé une nouvelle finition avec des technologies plus recherchées.

Une petite nouveauté, son clapet s’ouvre grâce à un détecteur de proximité. Le nouvel ordinateur est en aluminium, avec un écran en verre et un clavier rétro-éclairé. Il est disponible dans les couleurs onyx et perle. Dell a veillé à ce que son nouvel ordinateur face le moins de bruit possible. Différents accessoires sont proposés: un disque dur externe de 250GO ou 500GO, un disque Blu-Ray et DVD+/-RW. Un lecteur USB, un port HDMI, DVI et VGA. Tout ceci au prix de 2599e.

« Les grands designs doivent être intemporels et provoquer des émotions chez les gens,» note Alex Gruzen, premier vice-président de la division Consumer products chez Dell. « Si on a pris soin d’inclure dans Adamo une informatique de premier ordre, l’intention était de permettre aux gens de voir, toucher et explorer Adamo et d’y découvrir les matériaux choisis et le travail d’artiste auquel vous vous attendez dans une belle montre.»

Afin de pouvoir offrir aux consommateurs une nouvelle esthétique dans le domaine des PC, Dell s’est inspiré au près de marques de luxe et de la mode. Pour la communication Dell a lancé une campagne publicitaire “chic” partout dans le monde en ayant recours à des photos prises par un photographe renommé Nadav Kandar en montrant des mannequins de haute couture.

Un responsable de Dell expliquait à BusinessWEEK que cet ordinateur avait comme fonction principale d’attirer l’attention : “Ce ne sera pas un produit de volume pour nous, mais c’est un produit pour lequel les gens vont dire “Waouh ! Dell a fait ça. Qu’est-ce qu’ils font d’autres ?”
Dell tente par ailleurs de concurrencer Apple avec le MacBook Air . L’Adamo pèse 1,81 kg, contre 1,36 kg pour le Mac. Caractéristique très importante dans le monde des pc portables, ce qui le défavorise un peu. Au niveau de la durée de vie l’Adamo est également inférieur au Macbook Air. Il peut tenir 2h tandis que le Mac tient jusqu’à 4 h.

Un site a exclusivement été conçu pour ce nouveau laptop. Juste pour pouvoir ” admirer ” l’Adamo. Dell a sorti ce nouveau modèle non pas pour atteindre un grand volume des ventes mais pour montrer son savoir-faire et sa capacité à créer un gadget design et ultra perfectionné. Dell a voulu faire parler de lui et c’est réussi. Peut-être que l’entreprise a mis sur le marché un laptop de luxe pour améliorer son image et se positionner en tant que marque haut de gamme. Au niveau du prix, il est bien évident qu’il n’est pas destiné à un public large. Je pense que ce laptop sera tendance pendant un certain temps mais il sera bientôt rattraper par ses “chers concurrents”. Au niuveau de la communication, Dell a eu une bonne idée d’avoir recours à des manequins pour promouvoir le côté luxe du produit. Pratiquement toutes les marques commencent à créer leur laptot de luxe afin de montrer leurs compétences. Dell’s slimmest laptop ever still isn’t shipping out to eager consumers, but at least the Win7-packin’Adamo XPS is now configurable over on the outfit’s website. The base $1,799 configuration includes a 1.4GHz Core 2 Duo SU9400 CPU, a 128GB solid state drive, 13.4-inch WLED panel, 2 megapixel camera, 4GB of DDR3 RAM, GS45 integrated graphics, WiFi and a USB Ethernet adapter. Unfortunately, hardly any of the components are upgradable, but there are a few select upgrades available for those with the cheddar. The scary part? That December 22nd estimated ship date. Better spring for overnight and cross those toes!

Dell’s 9.99mm thin Adamo XPS notebook is available today starting at $1,799. The Adamo XPS features a 13.4-inch widescreen display, Intel Core 2 Duo Ultra Low Voltage (ULV) processor, and 2.5 or 5 hours of battery life with the standard or extended batteries respectively. With the twin arrivals of the Dell Adamo XPS and Windows 7, there’s a new wave of Fox News-esque ginned up drama about the arms race against Apple’s Mac Book Air for the title of world’s best ultrathin laptop.

Apart from tech bloggers and gadget foamers, who cares? Has anyone actually seen any of these exotic creatures outside a test lab? How many have been sold in this category?

And how is it a competition when Apple hasn’t bothered to do a follow-up to the original? They made their design statement and  have moved on to innovate in categories where people actually buy lots of stuff. Meanwhile, Dell’s R&D resources are mired in a competition to sell a few hundred units of executive desk candy.

Even among tech bloggers who are excitedly pumping out reviews pitting the Dell Adamo XPS vs. the Mac Book Air, the net effect is a commentary on fantasy objects rather than something they would/could actually buy/use outside their test labs. Sort of like discussing who’s the more powerful superhero, Superman or The Sentry: whoever wins, what does it matter in the real world?

We’ve been providing news on the hottest PC notebook to come out in years as it comes and rather than write a whole bunch of words here, I will just let the specs speak for themselves.

This is a classic example of folks copying Apple without really thinking about what makes Apple hardware work in the first place. This is supposed to go up against the MacBook Air. The only problem is LOOK AT HOW THIS FRIGGIN’ THING LOOKS WHEN IT’S OPEN! What’s the point of having a thin laptop if you have to unfold it like a plastic tablecloth just to use it? And forget about using this thing on anything but a table. Honestly….I know Dell is trying to get the premium market and all…but charging $1800 for this? You could get a MacBook Air for at least $300 cheaper ($700 if you buy refurbed). This is just insane.

The Adamo XPS is a daring slice of design and engineering. Quite frankly, it’s batshit insane.

I mean that in the best possible way.

It really is impossibly thin. I felt like I was holding a single sheet of aluminum that was contoured into the curved shape of a laptop. I set it down, gingerly, because I didn’t want to break it, since I didn’t know at the moment that it was $1800. My finger slid across the latch to disengage the heat-sensitive capacitive latch.

There was no visible sign my stroke was the lucky one, so I waited a second before prying the top half upward. It wasn’t entirely seamless—I had to hold the bottom half down as with a single finger as I pulled the display open and the keyboard slid forward, like a notebook out of a Pierce Brosnan-era James Bond era. The metal keys were cold. Which I kind of liked, actually.

When it’s in full bloom, the entire computer is propped up, resting on the front edge of the keyboard and outer edge of the display, so from the side it looks like an L that’s had its foot broken. It’s one reason I think the Adamo XPS is insane—there’s just nothing else like it, and that’s what I love about it, all practical issues aside. Like one I suspected initially, and confirmed when I had to balance it near the window—it’s going to be tricky to actually use in your lap. Do you let the overhang reset against your kneecaps? Or do you perform a balancing act, resting the slim edges on your legs, hoping you don’t lean one way or the other? The design’s not simply to show off your $1800 Ginsu blade by Dell, either—it’s for heat dissipation.

The 1366×768 LED display is sunken, so there’s a rim around it. That’s because the bottom folds up into the top, with a puffy lip, holding the webcam and mic, hanging over it. I worry slightly about the camera lens getting scratched, since it’s exposed whenever the Adamo XPS is closed.

I didn’t get to actually use the computer much, but it’s got essentially the same ultralight guts as the original Adamo, with the important distinction that it’s running Windows 7, so it should be a smoother ride in theory. The 20Whr battery, however, is only rated to deliver 2 hours and 36 minutes of battery life, so it’s going to be a very short ride. There’s a 40Whr battery available that doubles the life, but it murders the whole point of the Adamo XPS. It has 2 USB ports, DisplayPort video out (with an optional HDMI dongle) and a dongle for ethernet.

Really, it’s more a work of art and engineering than a functional computer, but honestly? That’s just fine, though, because it’s a pretty fantastic one.

You don’t see splashy ad campaigns from Acer, and that might explain how it can be making such a rapid ascent in consumer PC sales, and why it has the best chance of prospering in the low-margin end of the market. Having surged past Dell in global units last quarter, and with its eyes now fixed on #1 HP, it quietly markets decent products at an attractive price and lets WOM do the rest.

While Apple, Dell and RIM throw millions at advertising, Acer sticks to the basics and eschews high-profile, high-cost stunts that might grab a few headlines but can’t seem to move the sales needle. Instead, it prefers to let the momentum of tech media buzz do the work. Low-key disclosures drive positive buzz for upcoming products by providing more info on bread-and-butter content — specs and unofficial pricing – than competitors divulge. Amp that up with marketplace momentum and you have a little WOM engine that could.

Without the high marketing expenses, Acer can afford to keep downward pressure on pricing not only for netbooks, but also for tablets, smartphones and the rest of Acer’s aggressive product pipeline. So while other PC makers try to claw back margins on higher-spec notebooks, don’t be surprised if Acer’s approach disrupts that strategy as well.
