This week on RP and You – It’s a look at a couple of popular RP addons, how to install and properly

This week on RP and You – It’s a look at a couple of popular RP addons, how to install and properly use them, and an answer to that all-important question: How do I write a good physical description of my character?

Addons are little programs you can download that allow you to adjust the game to your liking in a way that the plain game won’t let you do. There are addons available for adjusting your UI, changing your bar layout, changing the way things appear on your screen – and there are also a few addons out there that are specifically for RP.

FlagRSP2

http://wow.curse.com/downloads/wow-addons/details/flag-rsp2.aspx – FlagRSP2 is one of the heaviest used roleplaying addons. It will let you plunk in a basic description for your character, and view other people’s character descriptions with the push of a button. Now, you don’t HAVE to put a description in there if you don’t want to, you can simply run around reading everyone else’s descriptions, but that wouldn’t be much fun, would it? FlagRSP2 is strictly for physical descriptions – as in what someone would see if looking at your character. What FlagRSP2 is not for is for character history, back story, or OOC notes. I have seen many, many FlagRSP2 descriptions in my time, so for illustration’s sake, let’s delve into what would be a ‘good’ physical character description vs. a ‘bad’ one, all right?

Good: (Character) is of an average height and average weight for his race. He has blue eyes, and jet-black hair that looks somewhat messy and unkempt, as if he’d just rolled out of bed. To the casual observer, all appears normal – but if you look closely, you’ll see a bit of tissue or paper protruding from one nostril, for no apparent reason whatsoever.

Bad: (Character) is the long-lost son of Arthas and Jaina Proudmoore, disowned at birth by his mother and possessing part of the spirit of the Lich King. He grew up in Nagrand because that’s where they left him at and likes horses and chocolate. He’s killed over 12,000 people in his lifetime.

The ‘Good’ character description is simply what you would see if you were looking at the player character, nothing more. It’s short, to the point, and to top it all off, there’s a hook there that may or may not make people want to talk to you – why on earth do you have a tissue jammed up your nose, anyway?

The ‘Bad’ character description is not bad because the player is obviously trampling gleefully all over lore – what makes the bad character description ‘bad’ is that it says nothing about what the character actually looks like. There is no way you will ever be able to tell by looking at someone who they are the son or daughter of, nor where they grew up, nor their likes or dislikes, nor how many people they’ve killed recently, much less in a lifetime. However, if the description is changed a little:

(Character) stands before you, a sullen, sunken face viewing the world with the casual disgust of one who has never learned to appreciate the life he was given. The bags slung over his shoulder are crude, and upon closer examination you see they are constructed with insignia after insignia of members of the horde, presumably those he’s killed. Around his neck he wears a small necklace that appears Kurenai in origin. Occasionally you will see him mutter quietly, though whether this is to himself, or someone, something that follows him is unknown.

He does not seem to notice or care that he is leaving a small trail of chocolate wrappers in his wake that flutter and waft in the breeze.

Now the description shows what somebody looking at him would see – and still hints at those facts that you so desperately want to divulge to everyone. In the interests of keeping it brief, I had to leave a few things out, but it’s still more than enough to capture anyone’s interest.

If you are content with a physical character description, then so be it, FlagRSP2 will do the job just fine. But if you’re interested in offering people a more in-depth look at your character, you may want to check out this next addon.

Next Page: MyRoleplay, and writing a physical description that won’t drive you bonkers

MyRoleplay

http://wow.curse.com/downloads/wow-addons/details/my-role-play.aspx – MyRoleplay (Or simply MRP) is what FlagRSP2 is, but on a much larger scale. It is worth mentioning that if a player has MRP, they can still read people’s descriptions that are running FlagRSP, and people who are running FlagRSP can read people’s physical description with MRP – but there’s a distinct difference between the two.

FlagRSP2 is a physical character description only. You will only be able to read a person’s physical description, even if they have MRP. MyRoleplay on the other hand allows both a physical character description, and a spot to write in the history of your character, their height, weight, what emotion they’re feeling at the time, where their hometown is, what House they are from if they are nobility, etc. It’s a much more in-depth addon, and while I have been a FlagRSP user for years now, I made the switch to MRP and love it, simply because there’s so much more you can add with it. FlagRSP2 however is a bit easier to use, so it’s up to you which one you’d like to pick.

When filling out your character’s history, keep in mind again that you don’t want to present a short novel for people to read – keep it brief. While there are some (like myself) that enjoy standing around and reading roleplaying descriptions all the livelong day, most of the time people are going to be too involved with what they are doing to want to waste ten minutes of game time slogging through the history of Thunderbutt the Boomchicken, bane of the Alliance. Also keep in mind that if your character has some big shocking secret about their past, you really don’t want to stick it in this box. Write a little about where they were born, where they grew up, how they decided to become a mage/priest/rogue/bank alt.

All right. Once you have one or the other of these addons, installation is really simple – just download the zipped addon, and then unzip it to your \World of Warcraft\Interface\AddOns folder, wherever that might be on your computer. When you log in to your game and go to the character select screen, you will see a button in the bottom left hand corner of the screen that says ‘Addons’. If you click this, it will let you enable or disable the addon as you please. Addons are updated just like the game is – patches or new versions are released fairly frequently depending on the addon, so you want to make sure you check for updates to your addon every now and again.

So you’ve got the addon of your choice, and you’ve got it installed, and now you have a large blank box with which to stick a lot of information in. …now what? We talked a little bit about back story development last week – this week, let’s look at the other side of character creation and development: the physical aspects that make up your character.

Let’s Get Physical: What does your character look like? Do they have any defining characteristics?

Physical descriptions seem to be one of the hardest things for roleplayers to write – and it’s not because they don’t know how to write them. A large portion of the problem seems to be that they can’t stop writing about their character. Keep in mind when you are posting these descriptions, you want to keep them fairly simple – there aren’t many people with the patience to read an entire short novel when they’re looking at your character. You’re writing what someone sees at a glance, you’re not writing an ode to your character’s stunning beauty.

Speaking of stunning beauty, another common error roleplayers fall into is either the heavy use of clichés that are old hat to a roleplayer that has been doing this for a while, but a new roleplayer wouldn’t necessarily view these as clichés. These are a couple of the most common ‘oops’ mistakes that new roleplayers can make:

A. I Feel Pretty: It is normal and completely understandable to want to have a character that is attractive. It’s completely understandable that in this fantasy land you are playing in, you’d want to be playing a character that is likeable, and the most effective way to make them likeable is to make them attractive. However, when you are writing your character’s physical description, nothing gives an inexperienced roleplayer away more than a six-paragraph long-winded explanation on the merits of your character’s bustline/hair/eyes. There is no reason in the world that anyone would have to go into that kind of detail. Feel free to do so, but keep in mind that your character isn’t really a stunner, because there’s about a zillion wannabe-stunners out there already. The worst offenders in this area not only go into great detail about their character’s appearance, but they write lengthy explanations of what your character feels when they are looking at them – how their voice causes you to fall in love with them, how their physical attributes cause your heart to race, etc.

B. Scars/wounds/tattoos etc: In World of Warcraft, a lot of the gameplay experience is taken up by fighting. Fighting scourge, centaurs, trolls, other players, animals – if your character is out there questing, it’s pretty much a given that you’re going to be fighting. Therefore, it’s natural that over time, people are going to get scars, or wounds. Everyone and their mother already has a very unique and distinct scar. Quite possibly you think that long scar across the left side of your troll’s face is interesting and unique. Please keep in mind that out of the millions of players that play the game, there are more than likely several hundred players with a scar exactly like yours. Have you lost your eye? Good – there’s about a million other characters wandering around in eye patches, so you’ll have plenty of people to commiserate with. Tattoos up your back? Awesome – there’s about a million people with those, too. Strange glowing runes? Yep. The list goes on – with a player base in the millions, and good chunk of them roleplayers, it stands to reason that the thing that makes you really unique and special in your eyes isn’t going to make you unique at all in the long run.

C. Half breeds/dragons/vampires: You don’t see this one as often as the others, but it still exists. Half breeds in World of Warcraft are rare – there’s only a handful of lore characters that are half-breeds. New roleplayers tend to make these types of characters because again, they want to feel like they are unique – but from a lore standpoint, it is highly unlikely that half breed would even exist. Keep in mind that your character is based on an in-game avatar – there really aren’t any models of blood elves out there with blue eyes, unless you’re rolling a death knight, in which case…you’re dead. If you say your dwarf is a half-elf, there is nothing physically possible in-game to mark him as such – there aren’t any dwarf models with pointed ears out there. So your only option to let people know about this is either write about it in your physical description and hope that someone notices it, or announce it flat-out.

The same goes for dragon roleplayers – people like to make their character a member of this or that dragon flight, a wannabe Krasus if you will, and talk about how their dragon character has way more power than any other character out there because they are a dragon. From a lore standpoint, this is hardly likely at all. Dragons are elusive, they don’t wander around the ‘common folk’ and boast about how they are a dragon, and someone looking at your character avatar isn’t going to be able to tell you’re a dragon. If you start trying to pull dragon abilities in the middle of a roleplay scenario, you run the risk of god-modding, and of people ignoring you entirely.

Vampires? They didn’t exist before Wrath of the Lich King (thankfully), but they’re in game now – thanks Blizzard – and known as the Darkfallen. The Darkfallen are a faction of undead blood elves that are allied with the Scourge. The chances are great that if you bring up the darkfallen thing in casual conversation, people are going to want to kill you. Making a character that is a darkfallen is like tacking a very large sign on your chest that says HATE ME in large, friendly letters.

There is literally nothing you can do to make your character physically unique, short of stating that they’ve lost all their limbs and roll around on a cart, which is highly unlikely from a game mechanic standpoint.

Therefore it is entirely unreasonable to expect everyone to show great interest in your physical characteristics. Got it? The only reason you write them out is so that people know what they are looking at. Players don’t need a short novel for this – a simple two to three paragraph explanation is fine. Go ahead and throw that scar in there – but realize that it’s not going to be the most amazing thing people have ever seen. Mention the glowing runes, if they are visible – but you better have a plausible explanation for why they are there. Are their robes messed up or torn? Were they recently in a fight? Do they smell funny? Throw those things in there. Going into a six-page soliloquy outlining the virtues of your character’s fabulous buttocks? Completely unnecessary.

Keep in mind that a character that is really, really wildly out of the norm is more than likely going to bring up some questions. Just because you have written your description and pointed out that your blood elf is really a high elf and has blue eyes despite the green eyes clearly visible on your character model does not mean you are allied with the Alliance, and it does not mean that you can waltz into Stormwind without the guards pounding you into a fine paste suitable for smearing on toast. If you’re playing a vampire, don’t get upset if people start trying to kill your character or hate him on sight. From a logistics standpoint, people don’t like vampires. If you are roleplaying that you’ve suddenly turned into a dragon and set the room on fire, do not expect other roleplayers to play along with this – to them, the concept is ridiculous.

The urge to go overboard on physical descriptions is a common problem with role players. My suggestion? Just keep it simple. Think of the description you are writing in these addons as follows: You’re at the auction house. Someone else walks in to buy something, and while waiting for the auctioneer to get his butt in gear, they glance around the room and spot you. Quick, what do you look like? Answer in less than ten seconds because they’re going to look away.

That’s it. That’s all you need. Trust me, it’s all you need.

Next Page: Gryphonheart Items and an addon to save the headaches of having to remember when you did what!

Gryphonheart Items

Another roleplay addon is a different type of toy – rather than a simple description that people can read, this one will allow you to create objects in-game that people can read, drink, eat, or mess around with. Want to make a unique drink that your character can sip on? How about a book written by you that you can trade to other players for their reading pleasure? These things and more are possible with the addon Gryphonheart Items.

http://wow.curse.com/downloads/wow-addons/details/ghi.aspx – Gryphonheart Items (GHI) is still not a widely used addon among roleplayers, and I like to think it’s because a lot of people simply don’t know about it. Once you have the addon installed, you’ll see an additional ‘bag’ icon on your screen as you play – holding shift and dragging the bag will allow you to move it someplace out of the way. It’s a 24 slot bag, which can hold an awful lot of stuff – but don’t be fooled, this isn’t for items you can already get in-game. Those you’ll have to continue stashing in your regular backpack.

The way GHI works is that it will allow you to create items within the World of Warcraft, but those items are only tradable among people who also have the GHI addon. In other words, you cannot vendor the item and you cannot sell it on the auction house – but you can hand it off to another player using GHI. So say, for example, you somehow come across the Very Secret Diaries of King Varian Wrynn. You can actually create those diaries book by book with the addon, and then trade them to other players that have the addon and let them read about Wrynn’s very secret crush on the bread vendor in Ironforge.

The addon will let you create actions when you right-click on items, same as any other item in the game – if it’s a book, it will allow you to open and read the text inside. If it’s a food or drink item, you can set it to letting you consume the item when you right-click it. You can set the item with a certain number of charges or uses, and you can name it anything you want. While there are plenty of items in-game already to work with, Gryphonheart Items allows you to take the roleplaying experience one step further, and it can greatly help a storyline along if you’ve got items to back it up.

WOWScribe Chat Logger

http://wow.curse.com/downloads/wow-addons/details/wowscribe.aspx – If you are a storyteller like myself, or simply want a record of what your character’s been doing, WOWScribe is a perfect addon for assisting you in remembering those things that happened down in Darnassus last week. WOWScribe is a chat log program that you can customize to only record the parts of chat that you want a record of. After enabling the addon, you can type in /wowscribe status to quickly see what channels are set up to be logged. To add a channel, you just type in /wowscribe add and then either the channel name, or the channel number. To remove a channel, simply type in /wowscribe remove and then the channel name. The /wowscribe start command will start the logging process, and to turn it off, just type in /wowscribe stop. You can record any channels you like – I usually just enable /say, /yell, /emote, /whisper and /party – those are the main channels that people RP through.

The log file will be recorded to your \World of Warcraf\Logs folder under the name WoWChatLog.txt. Keep in mind that it will record everything – so if you have timestamps turned on in-game, it will record the timestamps as well as the information you want recorded. This addon is invaluable if you are writing stories about your character – all of the past adventures your character has been on, everyone they’ve spoken to, and everything they’ve said are recorded in one file. My only complaint is that sometimes it’s a bit difficult slogging through the log file, especially if you’ve had it running for a while. I don’t keep timestamps turned on because I find them annoying, but I believe they’d probably help out for quickly sorting through what happened when.

That’s it for this week – tune in next Saturday for more RP tips and tricks!

“No Munch, do not touch that, I have been working on this for…*zap*! [Censored]!!! What

“No Munch, do not touch that, I have been working on this for…*zap*! [Censored]!!! What in the Hell was that for!?” says our Death Knight Hero with some quite complicated equipment…

Good day students, how goes the journey into Tankhood? Excellent, so now that we have talked about Specs, Gear, Stats, Caps, Rotations, and how to play a Death Knight (basics mind you), you are ready for a bit more personal lesson in Tanking. No, I do not need any tissues, what we are talking about is your User Interface, or UI for short.

Disclaimer

As with Death Knight Tanking, there are many choices to pick through, and each should be carefully chosen. What may be the best UI since sliced bread to me, may be unethical and down right impossible to work with for others. Is there anything that we can all mutually agree on, possibly, but for the most part mine will look much different from yours even if we have the exact same addons.

That being said, how about we set some ground rules for what a UI should do for you, in my own opinion!

Ground Rules

List additional information that Blizzard does not already (or does not easily) show in the base UI

Condenses bars and information into a more viewable space

Clears the center of the screen to allow a more viewable area of your character (allows you to see fire/aoe/circles of doom/ect.)

Better Raid Frames

Changing the look of the Blizzard basic UI

The Basic Blizzard UI is not THAT bad, unless of course you are trying to do something in-game. As a Raider, we need to be able to see how much Threat we are pulling, what is our DPS like, and of course Raid Frames. DPS is downright impossible to calculate without an addon to do so, and Threat is only accountable when you have the boss on top of you without an addon as well. As for Raid Frames, sure you can take the ones that Blizzard provides as a base, but generally we want something that is tailored to our needs, and catches the eye for when we need it.

Another problem I have with the Blizzard basic UI is simply that the Bars are all over the place and are far too big for my eyes, I like a small and condensed space that does not take up most of the middle of my screen. During any Raid, quite af ew bosses will throw down AoEs and the like, we want to be able to see these things easily, so how does one do that? We need the center of our screen free of space is how, so sorry Blizz, it’s workable for pretty much very low levels.

Will the Blizzard UI work for Raiding?
Sure, but for me it is the difference of using a bike with two wheels or a unicycle, you will get to your destination in the end, but one is significantly easier and more sought after than the other. In this case, a custom UI is the Bike, we are not all robots that can suffice with the same UI as everyone else, so we may have to get creative and create our very own UI.

Elnoriah, show us “the money”!
First of all, I based my current UI heavily off of Lore’s from Tankspot.com, but of course with a few more “tweaks” to better suit my wants/needs.

Do note, I am going to tweak the View Ports and such to look much more appealing than just two large black bars. Also, that large black space on the bottom is where Omen should be, and it will pop up when I am Raiding and not just being a Tool in the middle of Dal.

It is efficient, I can see any major mechanics in a boss fight, and it is simple to perform as a Tank. The only time I ever need to look at my action bars is when I am doing something nutty with my Engineering, (Jeeves, Wormhole, Mailbox, Goblin Switch Blade of Rezzness) or mounting up. To me this is a simple, but pretty UI, I like seeing Elno all punked up and ready to kill on my Unit Frames, and I love the Skinner Addon, it is simply delicious!

Pros

Because of Skinner, I have a workable UI with widescreen viewing ability. It is a bit of work to set up, but certainly worth it! Think of it as viewing a movie in widescreen, you actually see MORE of the film around you, and the exact same goes for my UI.

It is easy to Tank with. I can move around and view the rest of my group with ease (look at the top left corner for Grid)

It is appealing to the eye, which to me is a big factor when going through my UI, I want to be able to have a bit of appeal when I am playing. Hey, I am an artist at heart! (Despite the fact that I’m not good at art)

My diseases and procs are easily kept track of do to ClassTimer (the addon to the left of Elnoriah). It can keep track of my buffs/procs as well as diseases that are on the target. Although I use Death Knight Info Rune/Diseases for disease tracking, it stands out much more, making it easy for me to glance at the diseases.

Runes, RP, and HP are easily viewed. I have Death Knight Info Runes above my Player/Target/Target of Target frames, and large frames for Elno to be viewed in. Damn straight that is some kung foo text!

My buffs are at the top-right of the screen and are exactly how I like mine!

Cons

It needs something on the top portion of the screen, that black chunk between useless abilities/food and the screen is certainly annoying. I am thinking of putting FuBar on there to list my Gold/Repairs and some other useful bits of out of combat information.

Basically, this bad boy presents everything that I want and need out of an UI, thus making it appealing and kickass for my tastes. It is not completely wrong of you to disagree with my thoughts on a UI, after all it is YOUR game, not MINE.

Addons Used

Each of the addons that I use can be found from the Curse Client, or even Curse.com. Yes, I am a lazy bastard!

Chinchilla Minimap- A simple minimap with a clean feel to it, also has great amounts of customization.
Skinner/View Ports- Changes the basic Blizz UI to whatever your heart desires. View Port comes with Skinner and allows you to change your views of the WoW screen. (For example, my widescreen mode)
Pitbull Unit Frames 4.0- Unit Frames, EXTREMELY customizable. Highly suggested!
Omen Threat Meter- Displays TPS/Total Threat of the Raid/Party members on each individual mob.
Recount- DPS Meter, can view more than just DPS/Damage done though.
MikScrollingBattle Text- Scrolling text that shows how much damage I do, if an ability comes off of C/D, Healing Received, if the Target Avoids the attack,ECT.
Prat 3.0- Easily organizes chat, will show the class color and level of every player chatting.
Quartz- Cast bar and swing timer
SatrinaBuffFrame- Buffs and Debuffs
Dominos- Action bars, comes with 10 regular Action Bar, a Pet Bar, Vehical Bar, Roll Area, and a Cast bar (not used).
DBM- Basicly reminds me of the encounter, yells at you if you are in fire, and warns you of incoming special abilities that bosses use. (DXE and Bigwigs work as well, if you Raid you NEED one of these).
DeathKnight.Info Runes- Runes and Diseases
ClassTimer- Shows a timer of procs/diseases/DOTs/Pet Abilities (Customized to your liking)
Button Fascade- Prettier Buttons
Grid/GridManaBars- A Raid Frame that is HIGHLY customizable, easy to set up and highly recommended.

If there are any other questions about my Addons feel free to leave a comment or drop me an E-mail!

"ENERGY LEGS" Macro caused some win in /2

What does a UI do for Tanking?
In my case, clearing the middle of the screen of useless crap allows me to view the boss fight, as well as Skinner’s View Ports in the sense that my wider screen lets me see much more of the game than the basic settings. Tanks need to be on their feet, we have to see everything that is going on around us, or else we will not be able to react successfully towards it. I also like to view a bit more information than the general Blizzard Frames. It is a bonus for me to get alerted when key abilities are off CD, and when they are currently on me when I am getting wailed on. If I know what is and isn’t available, I can act MUCH quicker and more efficiently than searching my bars for something that is or is not on a C/D.

When I Raid Lead, addons like Recount can give me a basic idea as to who the problem can be/is in a Raid. Correcting a problem is 1/2 the battle, because let’s face it, not very many people like to “fess up” if they did something wrong, so if I can physically see this out of their DPS/Combat log I can correct it. Omen does a bit of the same thing for me, although more useful as a Tank, I can call out if someone needs to slow down on the aggro for a couple of seconds, rather than not knowing and letting the group burn and crash.

Efficiency and being able to evaluate your raid are key qualities for Tanks and Raid Leaders need to have, Addons just make these qualities easier to use.

Conclusions

Do remember, your choice of addons/UI is yours to make, I will not go all Dictator on your sorry asses if you still use the Blizz UI. If you are extremely comfortable and efficient, that is your choice to make, NOT mine. If you want to critique mine, or want me to critique yours, feel free. This is a relatively new setup for me, so some criticism would be ideal. Either way, go toy around with some addons, class, you can’t judge until you tool around for a bit!

Return around the same time next week for more knowledge of the Death Knight Tank!

Happy WoWing!
-Elno

P.S. If the site blows up within the course of the week it was not because Aifel/I were touching the layout, no sir!

One of my major issues with the game is the lack of some kind of vault in which to store items that you might need later on in the game. I end up carrying around way too many gifts for companion characters I haven’t even met yet, for example.

If you have the same problem, you’ll be pleased to know that there is now an (free) unofficial addon which adds a storage chest to your camp. You can get hold of it here. Read and follow the installation instructions carefully so that everything ends up in the right directories. It won’t conflict with the storage provided as part of the Warden’s Keep DLC if you already have that.

It’s a generous addition by one of the Bioware coders, on his personal time. He’s also provided the source code, so addon writers looking to add things to the campsite could use that as a starting point.

If you’ve been wondering about an answer to your incurable Hulu (or general interweb) addictions, here it is: LeechBlock.

Yes, you have to have Firefox installed. Yes, you can just use Safari or Windows Explorer to get around it. However, if your addiction is as bad as mine, you should do what I did and delete those other browsers.

The addon has a lot of other nifty features to help you curb the amount of time you waste on the intertubes. But, the one feature that sells this one for me is the randomly generated password lock. You heard right, it generates a random password to keep you from changing the settings and falling back on hard times. No worries, it lets you know what that password is. However, the password is such a long combination of upper and lower case characters that by the time you finish typing it into the prompt you will have hopefully remembered why you needed this blocker to begin with.

Songbird, the cross platform, open source media player, is to multimedia what Firefox is to browsers

Songbird, the cross platform, open source media player, is to multimedia what Firefox is to browsers. If you already do not have it installed on your system, please do so now before you continue reading. There are certain things that it can do which the popular iTunes cannot. The best part of Songbird is that you can extensively customize it with the hundreds of addons available to you. Lets take a look at 8 of such addons that you really need to try on your Songbird.

Livetweeter

LiveTweeter for Songbird helps you tweet your tunes. It allows you to post what you are listening on both Twitter and MSN Messenger/Windows Live Messenger. Tweet your tunes with ease with LiveTweeter for Songbird.

iPod Device

This time around you can enjoy your Apple toy on your PC without hassle or iTunes. Play your iPod from Songbird and synchronize it with your Songbird library using the iPod device Songbird extension. This extension will mount your iPod in Songbird, allowing you to play songs from your iPod library and playlists. This extension also allows you to copy songs to your iPod or synchronize your iPod from your Songbird library.

iTunes Import

This extension simply imports your iTunes library into Songbird.

The iTunes Library Importer functionality is built into Songbird 0.7 and later. You can find it in the preferences under “iTunes Importer.” Simply install the iTunes library importer Songbird extension from the Tools/Add-ons menu, and you’ll be able to import your iTunes music library into Songbird using the “File/Import a Library…” menu item.

Caveat:

The iTunes importer may be used on Linux to import an iTunes library from Mac or Windows. However, the file paths in the iTunes library file must be modified first. For example, a global change such as changing “D:” to “mnt/data” would allow an import of files that were stored on a Windows “D:” drive and mounted on a Linux “/mnt/data” drive.

Quicktime Playback

Almost everybody does a certain amount of word processing on their systems. One of the most popular

Almost everybody does a certain amount of word processing on their systems. One of the most popular word processing apps around is OpenOffice, the 3rd version of which as at yesterday (October 28) has been downloaded a hundred million times.

What makes this great office suite wonderful to use is the extent to which you can customize it with the thousands of freely available addons. These addons add extra features to make working with Openoffice very interesting. Below are 6 of such addons you definitely need to install to take your Openoffice.org to the max.

OOTranslator

This is a cool OpenOffice.org wrapper for Google Translate. It allows you to translate a document to any language using Google Translate library as the backend. This is particularly useful when you want to quickly translate your document or part of it from one language to another without having to copy paste it in online interface. OOTranslator provides a nice and simple interface which allows you to customize its behaviour using various options. Definitely a must have.

Pagination

How many times have you wanted to insert page numbers on those documents you typed and wished to heaven there was an easy way to do it? Well your prayers have been answered. Pagination is simply a little macro that adds an ‘Insert / Page number…’ dialog to writer. It eases the way you can add page numbers to a document. Definitely must add.

Compose special Characters

This addon makes inserting special characters into your document a breeze. Compose Special Characters lets you type two or three characters and use a keyboard shortcut to convert them into a single accented or special character. It works on Writer and Calc. You can also use a dialog to insert any supported character. The dialog lists all supported characters and the character combinations you use to compose them. The characters are categorised in the dialog for easier reference. Once you know the character combination you need for any particular character you don’t need to use the dialog if you assign a shortcut key to the Compose function. You can then type the character combination and press your shortcut to get your composed character as you type.

OpenCards

This is a very good addon for Impress which makes learning very fun and aids easy memorization. OpenCards uses slide-titles as flashcard fronts and the slide contents as their backs. Based on state-of-the-art memorization and scheduling algorithms OpenCards will help you to learn any set of flashcards. The two great reasons why I like this addon is that it allows you to learn any Impress/Powerpoint-files as flashcard-set without conversion and it also reduces your memorization efforts by implementing state-of-the-art methods for spaced repetition. Definitely a must have especially if you are a student.

Professional Templates Pack.

This addon gives you splendid professional looking templates for your word processing, number crunching and presentations. It has over 120 templates for Writer, Calc and Impress. It has among others, templates for

Business correspondence templates in six different layouts

     Budget and project plan templates

Event posters in six different layouts

Invoices, notes, minutes, press release templates in six different layouts

     Presentation templates

A dozen formal and personal letter templates

     Business card templates

This is a must have template for every OpenOffice.org user. It adds the professional touch to your documents, spreadsheets and presentations.

Tags for Templates.

This simple addon works on Calc, Writer, Draw and Impress by analyzing how frequently you use the same words and use these words as tags for templates. It will display you a dialog where you can see in the descending order how often what word was used in your document. The purpose of this is to simplify the process of filling in template properties for OpenOffice.org Templates. One less work and filling for you to do.

These are 6 simple addons that will add some spark to your Openoffice.org suite and hopefully increase your productivity. There are thousands of others that you can choose from and if you know some coding, could even create your own. I hope you like them as much as I do and look forward to hearing your view of them and which ones you prefer using.
