Adelaide SA 5000
Open Mon-Sat for Dinner, Mon-Fri for Lunch

Our first Gouger St review and will be just one of many along this street of culinary delights! It was a bit hectic as the street was closed for a special Classic Adelaide Rally street party which I didn’t know was on. As with most restaruants on Gouger St, Friday nights are always bustling and packed with market goers wanting a bite to eat, so let’s see how the Star of Siam holds up in the heat!

Final Score: 8.95/10

.

.

Red Duck Curry

The Star of Siam has been a popular place on Gouger St for a very long time, and I have always wanted to go there. Lots of people have told me it has the best drunken noodles and do a great red curry, so I was looking forwards to some tasty treats for sure! There are at least three other Thai places within 100 metres too so competition for the best on the street should be lively, but being a Friday night I’m sure that they all have no problems getting business. Tonight I was joined by a couple of friends who eat here so often that the owners and waiters know them on a first name basis, and assured me that the Star of Siam was the absolute best!

It was a Friday night and there were a zillion people around from the Adelaide Classic Rally event trying to find food at the same time, so the speed and attention of food and service could be expected to be rather slow. I was greeted by the manager who already knew who I was, and I found out she had assigned us a waitress to look after our table (and probably 5 other tabels as well!). Once everyone arrived, drinks orders were requested very quickly and our food orders were made not long after.

I also made a special effort to keep an eye out on the level of service at our neighbouring tables to see how the wait-staff would cope with being so busy … and I was pleasantly surprised! From what I could see the level of service and attention was just a good as any other regular night, and food was brought out at a reasonable pace. There were at least 8 wait-staff running around non-stop attending to each table which is exactly what’s needed for a night this busy. As we waited the wait-staff kept an eye out on our water levels and often came round to top up all of our glasses which was a pleasant touch too. Food started to come out without much of a long wait, and although a couple of us waited a tad longer I think overall the time was quite acceptable for a Friday night.

I like duck and I like red curry, so when the waitress recommended this to me I just couldn’t wait to dig in. When you order duck you normally get very few chunks of meat, and sometimes even the bony bits … but this time I was happy to be wrong. So many flavours and textures come into my mind when I think back … chili, basil, coconut, sweet, salty, creamy, smooth and al’dente. The balance of flavours was on the money, with not one flavour overpowering another and the duck meat was tender and still flavoursome. This was a truly unique red curry with the addition of lychee and pineapple to add more sweetness to balance out the savoury side of the dish. I like seeing some vegetables to offset the meat to create an all-round dinner, and in this case the inclusion of eggplant and red capsicum was a definite success, not to mention the large serving size too! In previous weeks every time I have had a great meal I have most likely said something along the lines of “this is probably the best dish I’ve had!” … but tonight I can positively confirm this IS the best red curry I have ever had!

So what do I think then? Although one person mentioned about the food waiting time, it was a super busy Friday night and they managed to run the ship smoothly overall … much better than some other restaurants I have been to with much fewer patrons. The red curry was the best I’ve ever had and I would have never expected to find lychee and pineapple in a duck centred dish. I liked the fact they looked after our water levels and found the time to serve us rice onto our plates during the night. From experience, their pricing is on par with most Gouger St establishments and you do have to remember you’re paying inner city dining prices. Do yourself a flavour and try it for yourself. Two thumbs up from me, and if I had a third hand I might even think about another…

.

Service [8.8/10] : Great attention to detail, a little slow on Fridays but justified!

Quality [9.6/10] : Really enjoyable, made me really happy to eat this!

Venue [8.4/10] : Pleasant, neat and modern with touches of Thai up and about.

Value [9.0/10] : Service was good and food was excellent and plenty, very much worth it.

The weather in Adelaide is bipolar to say the least and that’s why I found myself watching a bit of TV over the weekend. I’m one of the people that actually watches the ads and goes out to make a cordial during the show and last night I was quite glad of this as I saw the new Workcover ad. It’s the one where the guy is crushed under a 20 tonne earthmover. I had to make a few calls to find out who did it…was it Jam, Clems or….no, it’s really just out of those 2 in this town!

The copy is very strong, it’s well shot and most importantly, it actually delivers at the end. You actually feel all warm and fuzzy towards Workcover and I woke up today knowing that whatever happens (papercuts, getting my tie stuck in the manual load tray of the copier, phone neck) there is one thing I’ll never lose if I get injured…and that’s my job at SeeSaw. Sitting in front of my desk all day, the ad is really not all that targeted to me, but for those people that use their arms, legs and general bodies to perform very manual things, I hope it makes you feel ‘looked after’.

All jokes and target audiences aside, well done Clemenger BBDO Adelaide. A really nice job.

“I will go back, not now..I want to though..go back..eventually.”

I’ve been hearing a lot of those from my friends here. Some are students, some graduates, some travelers, some trying to get citizenship.

“I’m just here for the money, it’s good living but it doesn’t give me that feeling..you know ” a friend said.

another said “I dont wanna raise my children here” (well, ditto on this one I should say)

I have a friend who got back from the States and said “I hate being back, euw Jakarta. Gw balik karna all my loved ones are here aja”. (this surprised me, or rather…saddened me)

Some just cant wait to go back home, they miss the food too much. They miss all the familiarities and just got sick of speaking in a different language every second.

What is it with our attachment with home?

(Ooor, what is it with Australia? :p)

I guess I’ll have plenty of time to figure that out.. will write as soon as I come with something good.

cheers

A poll conducted by an independent sex analyst has found that most people in Adelaide think that Mike Rann did lots of dirty, dirty things to a waitress.
A majority of South Australians admitted to checking YouPorn for a leaked sex tape while others said they loved Adelaide being the focus of a proper fully-fledged political sex scandal, and not a chair sniffing scandal like Perth.
The poll, by SA Sex.com, found that 23 per cent of South Australians thought Rann should resign immediately and attend confession, with 87 per cent saying they believed the scandal was like an early Christmas present that would help people find Adelaide on the map.
James Alton, a fan of sex from Burnside, said: “If I shagged a waitress on my office desk, I’d be down the pub buying rounds and high fiving anyone with a raised hand, not suing everyone that printed the claim. I’d be photocopying the story and getting wallpaper made from the cuttings – duvet covers, mugs, T-shirts, you name it.”
Allegations that Rann had intercourse with the waitress circulated after her husband smashed him over the head with a copy of Australian Freight Logistics at a winery function.
Political scientist James Matheson, from the University of Adelaide, said: “This town reeks of conservatism, yet everywhere I go all people want to talk about is whether Rann came inside this waitress or not.”

A survey undertaken by Vertical Response in the US found that small business owners ranked PR and social media marketing amongst the most important tools for success in 2010.

More than two thirds of respondents planned to increase their use of email marketing and social media next year.

Whilst the respondents of this survey were US small businesses, in Australia, and Adelaide particularly, we are starting to see more businesses understanding how important social media can be to their business as it is not only cost-effective and easy to use but a great way to communicate directly with customers, prospects and key influencers.

Some of our new clients we are putting social media strategies together for include Internet Television broadcasters AustraliaLiveTV, real estate company Brock Harcourts and financial planners Hedges Asset Planning.

South Australian Police will hire the US-based Lightman Group to grill Mike Rann about whether he lied about nailing a waitress on his own desk during a sitting of Parliament.
Lightman will travel to Adelaide next week with two other deception specialists, who will also interview Rann’s cabinet, family and friends to see whether he has a history of telling porkies.
SA Police Commissioner James Robson said: “We thought about a lie detector but when we saw what Cal could do we had to give it a shot. Rann’s a sly fucker and we need the best of the best…. Cal’s taken down US senators who’ve rooted hookers, serial killers and arsonists – all who lie just by using their face.”
The Lightman Group has forged a reputation for detecting deception through facial expression, twitches and mutterings by deviants and murderers, who are known to be seriously good liars.
“Politicians use a type of sophistry that is at the other end of the spectrum to your bog standard crim,” Lightman told The Oath, “which basically means they’re fucking good liars, because it’s very much part of their job spec.”
Lightman did reveal that an interview he saw with Rann on his flight from Washington told him that he had definitely screwed the waitress at least once, and probably doggy style: “He looked away when a journalist said the word ‘sex’, which usually means he did something horrendously dirty to her and loved it.”

Had a relaxing few hourd out there knocking on doors yestrday afternoon .. met some nice people, one minor grumpy and one came to the door with a cathitor (sorry if spellins wrong.) The end result was some more nice people interested in real estate but not generally doing anything right now. I did get a tentative appointment from a nice lady who is planning a move early next year. Why don’t we get out there more ..
I just offer a property report so I am giving something and if it seems ok then ask if they are moving but the conversation leads itself to be answered .. Agents Try it!It doesn’t hurt really.

Two competitors in the Classic Adelaide Rally have been killed when their 1974 Porsche Carrera RS hit a tree on Hill Rd, Kersbrook, just after 3.30pm yesterday.

The two Victorians, Gary Tierney, 60 and David Carra, 43 will be honoured with a minute’s silence and prayer ahead of racing today. All cars will wear a black-tape stripe on their left headlight as a mark of respect.

One of the victim’s brothers, Mr Andrew Carra, said last night that his brother had worked for international world rally teams as a mechanic and had devoted his life to motor sport since the 1980s.

“He knew the risks and that was his life,” he said. “Dave absolutely loved his rallying. Everyone has to jump off this life at some stage and he did it doing what he absolutely loved. We’re obviously very proud of David and what he achieved.”

The accident happened 4.2km into the 7.2km stage known as Kersbrook Reverse.

Director Ivar Stanelis expressed his sorrow to the families of the two men.

“We all understand that motor racing can be dangerous, despite thorough safety systems,” he said.

Race organisers have pledged a full inquiry into the fatal smash.

With Adelaide Now
