Get yer ad-hoc multiplayer PSP games ready because as promised the adhocParty application for the PS3 has been released in this week’s update. If you have a wired internet connection on your PS3 (doesn’t include me), you can now play popular ad-hoc multiplayer game like Monster Hunter: Freedom Unite through that connection. Peggle and the Peggle Nights add-on finally hit the PS3, while PSone classics Resident Evil 2 and Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver also release this week. New PAIN DLC introduces us to the Flava Flav character for you to punish after making me listen to “ye-ye-ye-ye-ye-ye-yeah booooy!” over and over again in DJ Hero (only because I forget to change the samples). For the PSP, we see the digital release of the exclusive Assassin’s Creed: Bloodlines along with 3 new mini games in D-CUBE Planet , Echoes and Circles (no idea what they’re about). We also see demos for Pixeljunk Monsters Deluxe and Little Big Planet for the PSP. Sean C.

Over in Japan, multiplayer on the PSP is not really a problem. People gather in groups with PSP in hand with their copy of Monster Hunter: Freedom Unite or Phantasy Star Portable and play via ad hoc (essentially wireless local multiplayer) for hours on end. Over here in North America, finding other PSP owners with the same game within your social circle is a bit more far between. Japanese PSP players with a PS3 also had the luxury of the adhocParty feature that allows you to connect to your PS3 and play ad-hoc multiplayer games via the internet (in lament terms, making your PSP think there are other PSP players with the same game in your proximity through the PS3 internet connection). Today Sony announced one less reason to be jealous of Japanese gamers now that the adhocParty feature will become available by month’s end in North America. Bringing new life to your collection, you can now finally tryout the ad-hoc multiplayer modes on most of your games that you never had the opportunity play only for the reason you did not know anybody with the same game. At the very least, if you do know people with the same game with ad-hoc multiplayer, adhocParty will make playing with them that much more convenient . Sean C.
November 13, 2009 – Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) today announced the availability of the online service, “adhocParty for the PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) system,” coming to North America in November. The service, which launched in Japan last year, enables PSP system owners to play select online multiplayer games featuring Ad Hoc mode over the Internet through the PlayStation®3 (PS3™) computer entertainment system. PSP titles with Ad Hoc mode traditionally require users to play within close proximity to each other, but with “adhocParty,” PSP owners with a PS3 system can play one another through the PlayStation®Network.

“The PlayStation brand is synonymous with creating exciting new gameplay experiences that connect and challenge people in ways they never thought possible,” said Scott A. Steinberg, vice president, product marketing, SCEA. “AdhocParty for the PSP system creates an avenue for gamers to connect, strategize, and compete with each other – Gran Turismo is a great example of this. Polyphony Digital developed robust Ad Hoc features within the game, which are now even more accessible through adhocParty. We saw this as a tremendous opportunity to enhance the PSP system’s online gaming experience and bring the service to our North American consumers.”

Popular titles such as SCEA’s Gran Turismo® for PSP and Monster Hunter Freedom Unite from Capcom® will soon have access to this new social gaming service.

“The secret to Monster Hunter’s fantastic success on PSP around the world has been the social aspect of the game, which brings together players from all walks of life,” said Mark Beaumont, chief operating officer, North America and Europe, Capcom. “AdhocParty for the PSP system will connect gamers to the content they love as well as to those who share the same passion for gaming. At last, Monster Hunter fans will be able to adventure together, regardless of where they are in North America.”

Interoperability between the PSP and PS3 systems through features such as “adhocParty for the PSP system” enable users to interact with other PlayStation gamers in new and innovative ways – all of which is only possible on the PlayStation platform.
