Si eres un maquero, estarás de acuerdo conmigo de que a pesar de que en Mac no existen tantas aplicaciones como en Windows, las que existen generalmente son realmente buenas y en muchos casos mejores tanto en diseño como en funcionalidad con respecto a las aplicaciones de Windows.

En TUAW hacen una pequeña lista de 10 aplicaciones que sin duda debemos de tener en nuestra Mac, viendo la lista prácticamente, puedo decir que estoy de acuerdo, ya que hago uso de esas aplicaciones, entre algunas de las aplicaciones tenemos:

VLC .- Si hay algo que no me gusta de mi Macbook del 2007 es que cuando quiero ver películas en 1080p , en muchas ocasiones mi mac sufre mucho al reproducirlas, de todos los reproductores VLC es el que mejor hace su trabajo al reproducir vídeos en la Mac.

Firefox.- Pues el zorrito que casi todos conocen o usan, un gran navegador, con un sin fin de herramientas y plugins, lastima que coma tantos recursos al sistema, como opción les recomiendo Google Chrome, que a pesar de estar aun en fase Beta en Mac, me encanta lo rápido y liviano que es, hoy en día este es mi navegador por defecto.

Adium.- El pato de la Mac, es un cliente que soporta distintos servicios , pero sobre todo para los que vienen de Windows acepta las cuentas de messenger, altamente configurable, muy funcional y bonito, me gusta mas que messenger definitivamente.

Growl.- Es un notificador de eventos, básicamente se adapta a muchas de las aplicaciones en Mac, su función es sencilla mostrar ciertos datos o eventos que realiza un aplicación.

Dropbox.- No te gusta MobileMe, se te hace muy caro, pues Dropbox es tu alternativa, te permite tener una carpeta en el sistema la cual se sincronizara en la Nube para poder acceder a ella en cualquier lugar, ofrece 2gb de almacenamiento gratis.

Creo que uno de los temas de los que más se ha hablado en ChilenoMac es de Adium. Doy por hecho que es la aplicación de mensajería instantánea que casi todo el mundo maquero usa, y nosotros los switcher hemos tenido que acostumbrarnos a vivir sin Windows Live Messenger y Messenger Plus! (a decir verdad, la única cosa que extraño realmente de mis días peceros) y reemplazarlo por soluciones como Adium, que no es malo… pero no es lo mismo. Más para uno, que es un poco adicto a chatear y tiene contactos que usan iconos personalizados y nicknames de Plus que en otros clientes de mensajería se convierten en un calvario para entenderlos. Por todas estas razones es que hoy volveré a hablarles de Adium.

Resulta que hace poco fue lanzado en el sitio de Xtras de Adium un plug-in que ha venido a recordarnos en parte lo que hacíamos en Windows con WLM + MP!. Este plug-un se llama MSN Plus Adium, y lo pueden descargar desde acá de manera gratuita. Está en su versión 0.8, fue desarrollado por Tiziano Carotti, y promete dos cosas muy interesantes: filtrado de los códigos de color de Messenger Plus! para no ver sólo símbolos, y capacidad para agregar y enviar iconos personalizados a nuestros contactos. No podía quedarme indiferente con tanta maravilla, así que me dispuse a probar el plug-in para mostrarlo a todos. Acá vamos.

Lo primero es tener la última versión de Adium (hasta hoy, la 1.3.8) que pueden bajar acá. Una vez que han descargado el plug-in, tienen que instalarlo haciendo doble clic sobre él. Se les pedirá que reinicien Aduim, así que ciérrenlo con la combinación ⌘ + Q y vuélvanlo a abrir. Saldrá una pequeña ventana preguntándoles si desean activar el plug-in, que obviamente tienen que responder afirmativamente. Adium se abrirá como de costumbre, y podrán ver la ventana de contactos así:

Lo primero que saltó a mi vista fue que no hay más códigos de color: todos los contactos que ven acá ocupan Messenger Plus! y sus nicknames eran incomprensibles; ahora los puedo leer bien… pero no veo ningún color. Claro, el plug-in prometió filtrar los códigos de color, pero no mostrarlos como colores. Me hubiese gustado verlos, pero no se le puede pedir tanto a la vida. Una cosa que me gustó es que filtra los códigos a todo nivel: en las ventana de contactos y de conversación, en las notificaciones de Growl y en los avisos del Dock:

Estas ventanitas antes no eran de mucha ayuda en los largos códigos, y ahora puedo ver quién me habla o se conecta. El trabajo con los códigos de color está bien hecho, aunque espero que el desarrollador avance en el proyecto y añada los colores al plug-in, para dejarlo casi perfecto.

La otra promesa era la de agregar iconos personalizados; hasta ahora sólo podíamos ver los que nuestros contactos nos enviaban, sin posibilidad de copiarlos. Inicien una conversación con cualquier contacto y esperen a que les envíe algún icono que les interese agregar. Hagan clic derecho sobre el icono, y busquen lo siguiente en el menú:

Hagan clic allí, y aparecerá una pequeña ventana para que elijan el atajo del teclado que usarán para invocar el icono personalizado que están agregando:

Una vez agregado, ya está todo listo para que ocupen su icono nuevo. Sólo escriban el atajo tal como lo agregaron, y al presionar retorno se enviará al contacto con el que conversen en forma de icono. Esta promesa del plug-in funciona a plenitud de capacidades, y en lo personal me alegra mucho poder volver a usar iconos personalizados… no ocupo muchos, pero me gusta tenerlos a mano.

Es importante añadir que pueden administrar sus iconos agregados, yendo al menú ‘editar‘ de Adium, y buscar ‘insert custom emoticon‘ para allí abrir el submenú ‘open custom emoticons panel‘. Se abrirá la siguiente ventana:

Acá podrán ver qué iconos tienen, qué atajos del teclado les asignaron, y podrán borrarlos a voluntad. También pueden crear sus propios iconos agregando imágenes desde el Mac (haciendo clic en el botón + de la esquina inferior izquierda). Si manejan muchos iconos y no siempre los recuerdan todos, esta ventana les viene bien.

Bueno, esta ha sido la re-revisión de nuestro querido Adium enchulado con nuevas características a lo WLM + MP!. Fuera del detalle de la traducción de códigos sin colores, me parece que con esto Adium cobra nuevas fuerzas y se vuelve una opción más que interesante para chatear en Mac OS X frente a otras soluciones… cuando le den soporte para videoconferencias, será perfecto. Espero que la revisión les sirva, y que se decidan a probar Adium los que aún no lo han hecho.

Those of us who live in Ethiopia complain about how much we have to pay for anything. We earn less than most of the world yet we are expected to pay more. Take the case of a car for example. Say it costs 10,000 dollars in the US. Same car would cost at least 30,000 dollars in Ethiopia. Until recently, there really weren’t any locally made alternatives to choose from either.

The same principle applies to almost anything a consumer can buy – electronics, books, telecommunication, clothes and even powdered milk. But when it comes to software, ahhh… we are lucky. Until the copyright law catches up to us. But knowing Ethiopia, that may still be several years away.

Even though pretty much any software I need is easily available in software galleries on every street in beautiful Addis (I am aware that this is true around the world as well), for reasons unknown I feel guilty when I use them. And that is why I began experimenting with open source and all that it has to offer.

Open source is not very well known in Ethiopia. I don’t have figures so I can’t really tell if it’s well known around the world either. But if the guy who fixes your computer gives you a pirated copy of software and it does the job you want, then why bother looking for an alternative? If you can have nice expensive software for less than 100 Birr, then…

Why on earth would you want to use open source software?

I’m not sure I can really answer this question but I’ll just explain why I personally like using it.

Common misconceptions

The general belief in Ethiopia is that open source software just doesn’t match commercial software. Though this is true to an extent, I must say that most open source software evolves quickly and some offer equivalents to commercial software.

I like to try my hand out at graphic design and a little 3D modelling. Inkscape and Blender offer features that meet my needs sufficiently. Of course, I don’t really push the envelope of graphic design but I believe that these two examples of excellent open source software can meet most needs.

Office needs are met nicely by OpenOffice though there still are some formatting issues that crop up from time to time.

There are kinks that need to be ironed out. But the beauty of open source software lies in the fact that you can be a part of ironing out the wrinkles. If you don’t like the look of those icons, you can say so. Or better yet, you can make your own set.

Some open source software has made it big. Firefox would be the prime example. You may already be using it.

I’m not really sure if open source software will ever be used by the majority of the Ethiopian computer-using population. But if we ever have to pay the actual, expensive costs of the sofware we use, open source is a good alternative that is quickly getting better.

Internet-based communication is changing so quickly these days that there seems to be an endless stream of beta releases. Yesterday, Simon wrote about some of the latest browser betas; let’s look at a few products and services for interacting with social networks, Twitter and instant messaging.

I don’t generally like living on the bleeding edge, but some betas are very usable, and I’ve already incorporated them into my daily workflow. Others look promising, but are not stable or are lacking too many features right now. But all of the following are worth trying, and watching as they develop. We’ll review them more thoroughly as they mature.

Adium is my favorite IM client for the Mac OS (s aapl). Its latest beta supports all of the instant messaging protocols, and also has rudimentary support for Twitter and Facebook Chat. Unfortunately, the latter is not working as I write this, although a fix is expected shortly.

VoxOx is an ambitious program combining IM; social networks (Facebook, MySpace and Twitter); SMS texting; faxing; private email; file sharing; video conversations; and voice connections. As I wrote a few days ago, it is very rough around the edges now, and desperately needs improved tools for managing contacts.

Imo.im is a web-based multi-system instant messaging client with some intriguing features, like shared whiteboards. This service is listed as being in alpha, so we can assume that it has considerable development ahead of it.

Brizzly is a web-based service that looks a lot like Twitter’s own web interface, but with improvements. It supports multiple Twitter accounts and has recently added Facebook support. The multiple accounts aren’t as well integrated as I would like, but I assume that will come.

Tweetminer is another web-based service that includes support for multiple Twitter accounts, tweet scheduling, and RSS feeds. Its interface is attractive, but features are minimal at the moment. There are also Adobe AIR or Fluid-based desktop versions, for those who prefer standalone apps.

Socialite (formerly EventBox, which Imran wrote about here) has just released beta 2, which seemingly broke support for Facebook updates. When this issue is fixed, Socialite could become my favorite, as it combines support for Facebook, Facebook Pages, multiple Twitter accounts, RSS feeds and Google Reader in one attractive interface.

Seesmic Desktop is another Twitter and Facebook program which has worked well for me, but it shares with many Adobe AIR programs some ugly screen fonts and a propensity for using large amounts of memory. Seesmic also has a promising web version, but so far, it lacks support for multiple Twitter accounts, and for Facebook.

Nambu only does Twitter, but does it very well, in what I think is the most attractive interface of any program of its type. I can choose three different layouts, and switch between them easily. Nambu’s development is very rapid, with a new beta released every couple of days.

I find the popular Tweetdeck to be totally unreadable and unusable, due to its AIR interface. I wish Adobe (s adbe) would make AIR on the Mac look as good as the native OS X fonts and windows.

There are lots more betas out there, of course. What beta software and services do you use?

I spend a lot of time each day communicating with colleagues and clients, by phone, email, on social networks, and via the occasional fax. But when I need to have a short conversation and get an answer right away, instant messaging is hard to beat. Unfortunately, there are several IM protocols, and most of them don’t talk to each other. That’s why I use the multi-protocol IM software Adium on the Mac (s aapl) and Pidgin on the PC (s msft). I can also use a web-based alternative like Meebo or the new Imo.im.

VoxOx wants to take multi-system communication several steps further. In addition to the various IM protocols, it supports social networks (Facebook, MySpace and Twitter); SMS texting; faxing; private email; file sharing; video conversations; and voice connections. VoxOx also supports Skype messaging, although you have to have the Skype software running, which sort of defeats its purpose.

When you sign up for the service, you are assigned a telephone number in southern California (other locations are apparently on the way). Incoming calls to that number, and voice conversations between you and other VoxOx users, are free; other calls are charged at rates similar to other VoIP services. VoxOx has just begun offering flat-fee voice and texting plans, at prices it claims are significantly cheaper than Skype’s. VoxOx’s other services are free.

In recent days, VoxOx has released beta 2.0.5. The software has improved since I first tried it a year or so ago, but it is very definitely still a work in progress. Its dark background with white text theme is hard on the eyes and isn’t editable, and its contact manager has no provision for importing from or syncing with other address books.

VoxOx seems to be trying to collect the useful features from Skype, conferencing services, virtual PBX services, instant messaging and file sharing services, and putting them all in one place. It’s a pretty cool idea, and VoxOx is definitely worth trying, but I’m not quite ready to make it part of my daily workflow yet.

Adium est un client de messagerie instantanée gratuit qui permet l’utilisation de tous les protocoles (AIM, MSN, Google Talk, Facebook, Yahoo Messenger, etc.) à travers une interface totalement personnalisable. L’application peut les gérer simultanément, ce qui est très pratique. Il est possible de modifier l’apparence de la fenêtre principale, de l’icône du Dock, mais également les sons, l’apparence des émoticônes, de l’icône de la barre des menus et des fenêtres de discussions. Ces modules complémentaires à télécharger s’appellent des Xtras. Il en existe des centaines sur le site du logiciel. De plus, Adium est rapide et stable. Je ne vois qu’un seul défaut : l’absence de prise en charge des conversations audio/vidéos. Growl permet l’affichage des notifications d’Adium. Au final, je pense qu’Adium est une excellente application de messagerie instantanée, pratique, facile à utiliser, et totalement personnalisable. À essayer sans hésiter (dons encouragés). 1 Jahr sorgt schon Trillian für Aufregung in der Mac Scene, durch ihren Instant Messanger “trillian astra”

Trillian ist praktisch das Schweizertaschenmesser der Internet Messanger, er verbindet MSN, AOL, AIM, ICQ in einem Programm mit ansprechender Grafik und leichter Handhabung. Es wird kein Programm mehr erwartet von den Windows -> Mac Umsteigern aber der Harken daran = es scheint irgendwie nicht fertig zu werden.

Der Entwicklerblog gibt auch kaum Informationen die letzte Version ist eine Beta8 für einen Betatest habe ich mich schon vor einen Jahr angemeldet “Bis heute keine Antwort”.

Schade das Trillian anscheinend keinen großen wert auf die Mac Community legt was Informationen und Fertigstellung angeht. Da benutze ich doch lieber weiter Adium einen kostenlosen Messanger der auch alle Konten wie MSN, AOL, AIM, ICQ zusammenfügt.

Bueno pues me llegó un mail informándome sobre Digsby (disponible para windows, próximamente Mac y Linux) revisé de que se trata y le encontré una similitud al Adium(sólo para Mac), ambos son sistemas de mensajería instantánea para msn, twitter, facebook, jabber, entre otros.

Lo que veo de diferente (lo que realmente me atrajo, lo admito) es que te permite gestionar tus cuentas de Hotmail, Gmail, Yahoo mail, AOL/AIM, IMAP, desde su misma interfaz sin necesidad de abrir el correo (web o usando otro cliente como Mailplane, que es muy bueno por cierto ^^). En lo personal me agrada Adium pero Digsby se ve tentador, espero que pronto esté disponible para Mac para probarlo y darles una opinión más real ^^

Por cierto @palulo me comentó que la versión Adium 1.4 (Beta) ya tiene la integración de twitter, así que a probarla

What is Digsby?

Eigentlich ist ja Adium der Messenger meiner Wahl. Leider häufen sich in letzer Zeit beschwerden über meine Online-Status. Obwohl Adium anzeigt ich wäre online, werde ich bei meinen Kontakten als offline angezeigt. Das Problem ist zwar bekannt, doch gibt es dafür noch keine Lösung.

Meine Wahl fiel nun auf iChat als Alternative. Leider weist iChat einige Macken auf, die mir nicht gefallen. Somit bin ich auf das Addon Chax gestoßen, dass den Messenger von Apple wesentlich verbessert.

Die wichtigsten Features sind:

• HTML-Tags im ICQ werden deaktiviert
• Growl-Benachrichtigungen
• Automatische Annahme von Chats und Dateitransfers

I have always been curious about what kind of tools people have used to liveblog events (especially those involving Apple). As many of you readers know, Apple recently held a media event on 9.9.09. I jumped on the opportunity to attend and represent TheAppleBlog. Naturally, one of my responsibilities was to liveblog everything.

Josh Pigford, TheAppleBlog’s editor, manned the computer to keep up a constant stream of updates on Twitter and  CoverItLive, an awesome liveblogging tool. Before I had access to a Wi-Fi network, I used my iPhone to send Josh text messages and email photos. I was warned by several other attendees that Wi-Fi never holds up during events. The proof? Everyone there appeared to have a 3G card for their laptops. I was extremely concerned, but at least I had my iPhone as a backup.

Once the press were allowed to check in and move closer to the building, I whipped out my Macbook Pro and jumped on the Wi-Fi network. I had to configure the Eye-Fi card so my Canon G10 would automatically upload photos as I took them. Configuring the card was quick and easy (thanks Eye-Fi!). The photos would be uploaded to Eye-Fi and then immediately sent to my Flickr account for Josh to grab.

Eventually we were allowed to enter and take our seats.  The end result was a comical combination of high and low tech. While photos were uploading (over the surprisingly reliable Wi-Fi network) I typed out virtually everything said on stage to Josh over AOL Instant Messenger (Adium). It was his responsibility to interpret and publish my never-ending stream of consciousness writing style into something you could read through via CoverItLive. I was surprised to see how much he let through (including my comments about Phil Schiller dancing in his seat).

LinkedIn – For connecting with people I have worked with, and probably my main social platform. At the moment it’s getting big props for its job board.

Twitter – I’m not great at it but I am trying. Essentially, I am using it as a news feed, and as a search engine.

Facebook – For connecting with people I know and see outside of an office life

Friendfeed – I don’t use it often enough

Delicious – I have found new love for this

Adium – Not really been using IM since being made redundant. However, Adium is the best IM app for the Mac.

WordPress – my blogging software. It was simple to set up; That’s why I used it.

Photography

flickr – Huge fan of this site for many years. I don’t use to host snapshots, rather this is where I put my “one day I will be able take this more seriously’ shots.

Lightroom – My photo editing software of choice. I don’t really need Photoshop, I need a simple photo centric workflow

Music

Last.fm – been using the site for years. Don’t really maximise my profile, but it continues to scrobble my itunes content.

emusic – This is where I buy my drm free digital music, though amazon and 7 digital should get a shout for being competitive.

Desde que me encontré con este Adium (en esos tiempos 1.3.5) que incluyó la traducción de los códigos de MSN Plus! para nicknames de colores, no me cambié más. Si bien no los muestra todos y la experiencia de chateo es muy distinta (aunque no por eso es mala) en relación con el clásico Messenger:Mac, me gusta recordar mis tiempos en Windows con Live Messenger, un indiscutiblemente buen programa del entorno de las ventanas.

Pasé hace un par de días por el blog de Middu, que desarrolló este híbrido de Adium, y vi que actualizó su aplicación a la versión 1.3.6 (la última que tiene el oficial) así que cambié mi antiguo Adium por este para probar, y anda igual que el otro. Tiene algunas mejoras que pueden revisar en el historial de actualizaciones de la página oficial del cliente, y pueden descargar la versión de Middu desde esta URL. Aprovecho de contarles que es 100% compatible con Mac OS X 10.6.1 Snow Leopard, así que los que ya lo usen no teman en actualizar Adium.

Assicurati che hai disistanllato la versione 1.0 di questo plugin; se lo hai installato elimina il plugin SIMBL e poi installa questa versione.

Novità:
-(Versione 2.2) compatibile con Adium v1.33
-(Versione 2.2) aggiunge una scrollbar in stile HUD nella finestra di chat.

Istruzioni per l’installazione:

1. Apri una nuova finestra del Finder e naviga fino alla tua copia di Adium. Clicka col tasto destro sulla sua icona e scegli “Mostra contenuto pacchetto” dal menu. Nella finestra apparsa naviga in Contents/Resources, e trascinaci il contenuto di “1. Copy to Adium Resources” del pacchetto scaricato prima.

2. Doppio click su ogni file della cartella “2. Double-Click to Install”.

3. Scarica questo pacchetto e fai doppio click su “HUD.AdiumMessageStyle” nella cartella del file scaricato.

Ora nelle preferenze di Adium selezionate la scheda “Aspetto” e in “Tema colori” e “Layout lista” selezionate HUD complete v2. Ora passate alla scheda messaggi e selezionate in “Stile messaggi”. Chiedete e buona chat!

I’ve been having trouble trying to get my logs converted.

Course I went to Li-Ma’s Blog to try to find stuff. His code didn’t work for me since his code ignores .txt files and all of my logs were in .txt format.

I found others’ versions of the code in the comments of the page, but none worked sadly. And I didn’t want to tinker with the code cause I don’t know Perl, I don’t care to learn a lil, and I am tired of coding. I am tired from just CSS, so I certainly don’t want to tinker with Perl hahahaha.

I finally found something that worked! Well, mostly. It didn’t convert everything correctly, but it converted like 98% of my stuff right so good enough for me lawl. Not sure why some stuff didnt’ appear correctly cause I looked at the converted xml logs and they looked fine…

Just copy and paste the code in something like converter.php, make sure you add the path to your adium and pidgin logs in the code at the top where it tells you where to add it, and then run the code!
