<p>Brasília &#8211; Deflagrada nas primeiras horas da manhã de hoje (27), a Operação Caixa de Pandora, da Polícia Federal (PF), envolve pelo menos três deputados distritais, secretários de governo e um conselheiro do Tribunal de Contas do Distrito Federal.</p>
<p>Segundo a assessoria do presidente da Câmara Legislativa do Distrito Federal, Leonardo Prudente (DEM), um dos envolvidos na operação da PF,  os policiais teriam levado documentos e os computadores do chefe de gabinete da presidência e do chefe do gabinete pessoal de Prudente.</p>

<p>Ainda de acordo com a assessoria do deputado, não havia, entre os mais de 20 mandados de busca e apreensão expedidos pelo ministro Fernando Gonçalves, do Superior Tribunal de Justiça (STJ), autorização para que os agentes entrassem no gabinete da presidência, mas Prudente teria autorizado os agentes a ingressar no local e levar o que julgassem necessário.</p>
<p>Os policiais também estiveram nos gabinetes dos deputados Eurides Brito (PMDB) e Rogério Ulysses (PSB). Em ambos, teriam levado apenas documentos como registros de chamadas e outros papéis de menor importância. De acordo com a assessoria dos dois parlamentares, os advogados de ambos já estão tentando obter, no STJ, acesso ao processo para saber o motivo das buscas.</p>
<p>A casa e o gabinete do secretário de Educação, José Luiz Valente, também foi alvo dos policiais. Em nota, o secretário diz que os agentes pediram para ele entregar documentos e um notebook. &#8220;Tiveram acesso a tudo o que desejavam. Estou à disposição do Departamento de Polícia Federal para o que for necessário, mas me reservo o direito de só me pronunciar publicamente sobre o assunto quando tiver informações completas do que se trata&#8221;.</p>
<p>No Tribunal de Contas, os agentes apreenderam documentos do conselheiro Domingos Lamoglia. ex-chefe de gabinete do governador José Arruda, que foi o responsável por indicá-lo para o tribunal. Lamoglia tomou posse no cargo há um mês. O conselheiro não foi ao tribunal hoje.</p>
<p>Procurada pela reportagem, a PF informou que o processo corre em segredo de Justiça e que, portanto, os detalhes sobre a operação não podem ser divulgados.</p>

<title><![CDATA[Teoria da personalidade conforme Alfred Adler]]></title>

<p style="text-align:justify;">Alfred Adler nasceu de uma família de classe média em Viena, em 1870, e morreu na Escócia em 1937. Foi um dos fundadores da Sociedade Psicanalítica de Viena e depois seu presidente. Não demorou muito para que começasse a desenvolver idéias que divergissem das de Freud. Formou, então, seu próprio grupo, denominando-o grupo do sistema holístico da psicologia individual.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">A abordagem criada por Adler compreende as pessoas como sendo totalidades integradas dentro de um sistema social. Sustenta a motivação do homem como sendo fundamentada pelas solicitações sociais. Para Adler, o homem procura contato com os outros, empreende atividades sociais em cooperação, põe o bem-estar social acima do interesse próprio, adquirindo um estilo de vida que é, predominantemente, orientado para o meio externo.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Adler manifesta uma preocupação biológica, tanto quanto Freud e Jung. Freud enfatiza o sexo, Jung os padrões primitivos de pensamento e  Adler o interesse social.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Adler cria alguns conceitos muito importantes para a psicologia da personalidade:</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;"><em><strong>Self</strong> – </em>corresponde a um sistema altamente personalizado e subjetivo que interpreta e tornam significativas as experiências do organismo. É criador, unitário, consistente e soberano na estrutura da personalidade.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">É algo que intervém entre os estímulos que agem sobre a pessoa e as respostas que ela oferece. O homem constrói  sua personalidade com a matéria-prima da hereditariedade e da sua experiência. O self criador dá sentido à vida; cria tanto o ideal como os meios de atingi-lo. É o princípio ativo da vida humana.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;"><em><strong>Estilo de vida</strong> – </em>corresponde ao princípio do sistema pelo qual a personalidade funciona; é o todo que comanda as partes. É o princípio que explica a singularidade da pessoa. Cada pessoa tem um estilo de vida e não há dois iguais.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Todos têm o mesmo objetivo, a superioridade, mas há inúmeras maneiras de atingi-lo. Toda conduta de uma pessoa tem origem em seu estilo de vida. Este forma-se na infância, por volta dos quatro anos de idade e, daí por diante, as experiências são assinaladas e utilizadas de acordo com ele. É uma compensação para determinada inferioridade.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;"><em><strong>Luta pela superioridade </strong>– </em>corresponde ao objetivo superior do homem na sua luta contra os obstáculos: ser agressivo, poderoso superior.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;"><em> “Superioridade é algo análogo ao conceito de self em Jung, ou ao princípio de auto-realização de Goldstein. É um esforço da personalidade no sentido de completar-se. É ‘a força que arrasta para cima.’” (Hall &#38; Lindzey)</em></p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Todas as funções do homem seguem a direção da luta pela superioridade, que é inata, é um princípio dinâmico preponderante – uma luta pela plena realização de si mesmo.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;"><em><strong>Inferioridade e compensação</strong> – </em>há a inferioridade orgânica, pois, para Adler, cada região do corpo apresenta uma inferioridade básica, inferioridade essa que existe em virtude de herança ou de alguma anomalia do desenvolvimento.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Depois Adler ampliou o conceito, incluindo quaisquer sentimentos de inferioridade, tanto os que decorrem de incapacidades psicológicas ou sociais sentidas subjetivamente, como os que se originam de fraqueza ou deficiência física.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">No princípio, Adler correlacionava a inferioridade com feminilidade, cuja compensação ele chamou de “protesto masculino”. Os sentimentos de inferioridade decorrem de um senso de imperfeição em alguma esfera da vida. Adler afirmava que os sentimentos de inferioridade não são indícios de anormalidade; são a causa de todo melhoramento na vida humana.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Sob condições normais o sentimento de inferioridade ou um senso de imperfeição é a grande mola propulsora da humanidade. O homem é impulsionado pela necessidade de superar sua inferioridade e arrastado pelo desejo de ser superior.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;"><strong> </strong><em><strong>Interesse social</strong> – </em>corresponde à verdadeira e inevitável compensação pela natural fraqueza dos seres humanos. É quando a luta pela superioridade torna-se socializada.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Adler acreditava que o interesse social é inato; que o homem é uma criatura social por natureza e não por hábito. Contudo, à semelhança de qualquer outra aptidão natural, esta predisposição inata não surge espontaneamente. Ela torna-se atuante quando orientada e treinada.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">É esse interesse social inato que motiva o homem a subordinar o interesse pessoal ao bem-estar comum.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;"><strong> </strong><em><strong>Finalismo de ficção </strong>– </em>Adler descobriu a idéia de que o homem é motivado mais pelas expectativas do futuro do que por suas experiências do passado. Esses objetivos de ficção eram, para Adler, a causa subjetiva dos acontecimentos psicológicos.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Adler identificou a teoria de Freud com o princípio da causalidade e sua própria teoria com o princípio do finalismo.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;"><em>“Só o objetivo final pode explicar   a   conduta humana.” (Adler, 1930)</em></p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Esse objetivo final pode ser uma ficção, isto é, um ideal impossível de realizar-se mas que é, não obstante, um estímulo real para o esforço humano e para a explanação última de sua conduta. Adler acreditava, contudo, que a pessoa podia libertar-se da influência dessas ficções e enfrentar a realidade quando necessário, o que o neurótico é incapaz de fazer.</p>
<h3 style="text-align:justify;">Conclusão</h3>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Adler interessou-se, especialmente, pelas espécies de influências que predispõem a criança para um defeituoso estilo de vida. Descobriu alguns fatores importantes, como as crianças com inferioridades, as crianças mimadas, as crianças rejeitadas.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">As crianças com enfermidades físicas e mentais sofrem muito e têm tendência a se sentir deficientes face às solicitações da vida. Em geral, consideram-se fracassadas. Se, porém, tiverem pais compreensivos e encorajadores, poderiam compensar suas inferioridades e transformar sua fraqueza em força.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Muitos homens famosos começaram a vida com deficiências orgânicas, que depois superaram. Constantemente, e com veemência, Adler levantou sua voz contra os males da superproteção; pois, para ele, esse é o maior castigo que se pode impor à uma criança.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">As crianças superprotegidas não conseguem desenvolver sentimentos sociais; tornam-se déspotas, à espera de que a sociedade se conforme com seus desejos egoístas. Adler considerava  isso danoso à sociedade.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">A rejeição também produz conseqüências desastrosas nas crianças. Maltratadas na infância, tornam-se adultas inimigas da sociedade. Seu estilo de vida é dominado pela necessidade de vingança.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Essas condições – enfermidade orgânica, superproteção e rejeição  &#8211; produzem concepções errôneas sobre o mundo, resultando num estilo patológico de vida.</p>

<p>Die Eisbären Berlin bleiben trotz einer 3:7-Klatsche gegen die Metro Stars weiter Spitzenreiter. Nachdem bereits gestern auch die Adler Mannheim vor eigenem Publikum verloren hatten, kassierten auch die Grizzly Adams Wolfsburg zu Hause eine Pleite.  Gegen die Nürnberg Ice Tigers hieß es am Ende 2:3. Nürnberg verhinderte dadurch den Sturz ans Tabellenende, denn auch das bisherige Schlusslicht, Hannover Scorpions, kam zu einem 3:2-Auswärtssieg. Die Niedersachsen behielten in Straubing die Oberhand. Neues Schlusslicht sind die Krefeld Pinguine, die gegen die Iserlohn Roosters 2:4 verloren.</p>

Vor 5388 Zuschauern gingen die Hamburg er in der heimischen Colour Line Arena durch Clarke Wilm (4.) und Jason King (8.) schnell in Führung. Nach schneller glichen aber die Badener aus: Marcus Kink (9.), Scott King (11.).  Wer dachte, dass die Freezers, nur Vorletzter der DEL, nun einbrechen sah sich getäuscht. Witali Aab (16.) und Clarke Wilm (17.) stellten den 2-Tore-Vorsprungnoch vor der ersten Drittelpause wieder her. Im Mittelabschnitt legten die Freezers durch Stephan Retzer nach (30.), ehe Colin Beardsmore (32., 36.) die Adler wieder hoffen ließ. Im letzten Drittel traf zunächst Francios Fortier (44.) zum abermaligen 2-Tore-Vorsprung von Hamburg (6:4). Mannheims Scott King schaffte in der 45. Minute nochmal den Anschlusstreffer, aber Kimmo Kuhla machte für die Frezzers, die nun auf Platz 11 liegen, alles klar (60.).</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p style="text-align:center;">Seit 10 Tagen säge ich nun für den Bremer Weinachtsmarkt, den Winterzauber an der Schlachte. 10 Tage liegen noch vor mir. Die Auslage wird gefüllt sein aber die wesentliche Reserve wird z.T. sehr dünn sein. . Bestellungen (die mich sehr freuen) halten mich zusätzlich ab. Es wird , wie immer, ab der 2.-3. Woche spätestens Engpässe geben.  Handgefertigte Waren müssen eben erst mal <strong>handgefertigt</strong> werden und nicht einfach beim Lieferanten bestellt werden. Heute neben vielen anderen Münzen, auch wieder Mexikanische Silberpesos. Erst mal nur die einfache Ausführung.</p>

<p>Io ci vedo un disegno tigrato/leopardato in questo bracciale a decorazione preziosa di <a href="http://www.adler.ch/" target="_blank">Adler</a>. Non sono un&#8217;amante dello stile animalier (che però è un pezzo intramontabile, per lo meno nell&#8217;ambito moda), ma questo è davvero originale fatto con diamanti bianchi, neri, gialli per un totale di 43 carati. E gli anelli non sono da meno, <em>esageratamente</em> indiscreti.</p>

<p><strong>Alfred Adler </strong>(n. 7 februarie 1870 – d. 28 mai 1937) a fost un doctor şi psiholog austriac, fondator al şcolii de psihologie individuală; a doua şcoală vieneză de psihoterapie (după psihanaliza lui Sigmund Freud şi înainte de logoterapia lui Viktor Frankl).</p>
<p><strong>Viaţă</strong>     <br />Alfred Adler a fost al treilea copil şi al doilea fiu al unui negustor evreu de cereale. Când a fost mic a avut rahitism (picioare curbate), ceea ce l-a oprit să meargă până la patru ani. Aproape a murit de pneumonie când a avut cinci ani şi tot la această vârstă s-a decis să devină medic.     <br />Alfred a fost un copil activ, popular, şi un elev mediocru, cunoscut de asemenea pentru atitudinea competitivă faţă de fratele mai mare.     <br />În 1895, a obţinut o diplomă în medicină de la Universitatea din Viena. În timpul anilor de facultate, s-a ataşat de un grup de studenţi socialişti, printre care şi-a găsit viitoarea soţie, Raissa Timofeyewna Epstein, o intelectuală şi activistă social din Rusia, care studia în Viena. S-au căsătorit în 1897 şi au avut patru copii, dintre care doi au devenit psihiatrii.     <br />Şi-a început cariera medicală ca oftalmolog, dar a trecut repede la practica generală, şi şi-a făcut un cabinet intr-o parte defavorizată a Vienei, vizavi de Prater, o combinaţie dintre un parc de amuzament şi un circ. Clienţii săi includeau oameni de la circ, şi s-a sugerat că slăbiciunile şi puterile neobişnuite ale performerilor au condus la insight-urile sale legate de &#34;inferiorităţi organice&#34; şi &#34;compensare&#34;.<strong> </strong></p>
<p><strong></strong>    <br /><strong>Carieră timpurie</strong> <strong></strong>    <br />În 1901, Adler este invitat de Sigmund Freud să se alăture unui grup de discuţii lărgit la care participau Max Kahane, Rudolf Reitler şi Wilhelm Stekel. Acestui nucleu de cinci psihologi li se vor adăuga în timp şi alţii formând în timp mişcarea psihoanalitică cunoscută ca Mittwochsgesellschaft adică &#34;Societatea de miercuri&#34;. În calitatea sa de membru activ pentru o lungă perioadă de timp a societăţii, Adler a devenit ulterior, în 1910, preşedinte al Societăţii psihoanalitice din Viena.</p>
<p>&#160;<strong></strong>     <br /><strong>Publicaţii</strong> <strong></strong>    <br />Cele mai importante lucrări ale lui Alfred Adler sunt Practica şi teoria psihologiei individuale (1927), Înţelegerea naturii umane (1927) şi Ceea ce viaţa poate însemna pentru tine (1931).     <br />Autor foarte prolific, Adler a publicat antum mai mult de 300 de cărţi şi articloe.     <br />Institul Alfred Adler din Northwestern Washington a publicat recent primele zece volume din seria de douăsprezece The Collected Clinical Works of Alfred Adler (Operele lucrărilor clinice ale lui Alfred Adler), acoperind scrierile sale din perioada 1898 &#8211; 1937. Ein richtungsweisendes Spiel für beide Seiten. Verliert die Hertha ist der Abstiegskampf das Thema für den Rest der Saison. Gewinnt die Hertha geht es aufwärts, eine Trendwende ist in Sicht. Es riecht gewaltig nach Unentschieden.</p>
<p><strong>VfL Wolfsburg</strong> : FSV Mainz 05 (Sa. 15.30 Uhr)<br />
Der Meister kriselt. Mainz hat Freiburg mit 3:0 klar geschlagen, eine Überraschung wäre ein Mainzer Punktgewinn keineswegs. Doch Wolfsburg sollte man nicht unterschätzen. Es ist nur eine Frage der Zeit bis sich Edin Dzekos Ladehemmung löst und der Stürmer zu seiner Topform zurückfindet.</p>
<p>VfB Stuttgart : <strong>Bayern München</strong><br />
Nach der Pokal-Gala müssen die Bayern nach Schwaben. Stuttgart liegt am Boden. Gibt es für den VfB eine Packung, dürfte auch Horst Heldt seine schützende Hand nicht mehr über seinen Nachbarn Markus Babbel halten.</p>

Not long ago, numbers as high as 25,000 were being used to motivate government policy which has led to changes in the priorities of virtually every police force in the country, and likely changes in the law. But it turns out the figures are bogus. The <em>Guardian</em> article charts their genealogy.</p>
<p>A central division that shapes the epistemology of testimony is that between reductionists and non-reductionists. Reductionists think that interlocutors have to justify what they are told by their own means. Non-reductionists think that interlocutors can, in principle, be justified in being so told, alone. The present situation offers a nice illustration of what’s at issue.</p>
<p>It’s difficult to imagine how anyone could know everything that is known. But in any society in which there is a division of epistemic labour, many people make decisions which affect the lives of others on matters about which they are not experts or even knowledgeable hobbyists.</p>
<p>This combination (absent first-hand knowledge, and, a capacity to affect the lives of others) introduces a requirement that people rely on what the authorities (whoever they are: mechanics, scientists, economists, estate agents, policy designers, teachers&#8230;) tell them. This is a fact of modern life. Most of what you know you do not know first hand. But for this dependence on authority to work effectively as a basis on which interlocutors can make good decisions, and act appropriately: the authorities in question must have an accurate reputation; the theatres in which authorities have their checks and controls need to be functioning properly; and that which leaks out into the public domain needs to be put in a way that non-experts can understand and put to use responsibly.</p>
<p>When we have non-expert consumers of information, much scaffolding needs to be in place for a reliance on authority not to end in disaster. But with it in place, we get a picture of the epistemological status of testimony that is not obviously either reductionist or non-reductionist.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>C&#8217;était la première fois que je mettais les pieds à la <strong>Galerie Adler</strong> (75, Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré et <a href="http://www.galerieadler.fr/">ici</a>) qui se trouve à deux pas de la galerie RX et de la galerie Jérôme de Noirmont.</p>
<p>Je passais juste pour voir un travail en particulier, celui de <strong>Laurent Elie Badessi</strong>. Les images ci-dessous proviennent de la Galerie Bertin-Toublanc (site <a href="http://www.galeriebertin.fr">ici</a>). Il s&#8217;agit de photographies de grand format représentant des militaires, structurées en deux séries qui se répondent, l&#8217;une en couleur, l&#8217;autre en noir et blanc. Leurs yeux sont bandés, soit par le drapeau américain, soit par un bandeau où figurent des mots, qui assemblés entre photos, forment la phrase &#8220;ceci n&#8217;est pas un rêve&#8221;. Cette même phrase est lisible, à la place du matricule, sur la série en couleur.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>So I managed to get in a few hours of practicing, despite the fact that I thought I&#8217;d be too busy to do so. I guess that&#8217;s why it&#8217;s ten from 1AM and I&#8217;m still in the music building. I got here at nine and practiced long tones first, with a strobe tuner. I hadn&#8217;t started doing long tone exercises until about a week ago, and I&#8217;ve already noticed a difference in my playing. It feels like they&#8217;re training my diaphragm to react properly more than anything. Afterward, my tone is much more even and the notes all have the same quality rather than having some of them stick out.</p>
<p>Then I practiced whole tone scales. I mostly just did C and F and got them under my fingers solidly. And followed that with some of the Oubradous exercises from volume one. I did the ones in C. I like the Oubradous stuff because its so basic but so crucial to playing well. It relaxes me and helps with intonation and just makes sure that your fingers are exactly coordinated in order to play them properly. </p>
<p>After that, I went back to the Adler Canto XII. I hadn&#8217;t been practicing with a metronome lately, and it showed big time. So I had to do some back tracking. I played the first movement through once at the given tempo of quarter note = 58, only I put the eighth note on the metronome. Then I went back to the beginning and played it through again, only I stopped and worked on any sections that were weak technically, intonation-wise, rhythmically, dynamically, etc. until it all sounded much smoother and better. Then I did the same thing with the second movement, initially at eighth note = 120 then amping it up 126. I tried to keep it really slow because the movement should eventually be something like quarter note at 126. I really am just trying to get it totally comfortable at a slow speed first that way making it faster will be easy and everything will sound even.</p>
<p>I finished it off with running through the Hindemith&#8217;s first three sections. I listened to a recording of it earlier to get a better idea of the piece&#8217;s overall effect. I&#8217;ve never played it before, so it was nice to do some sight reading of a nice piece like that. </p>
<p>I grabbed some other pieces from the library to go over as well: Tansman &#8220;Sonatine&#8221; and &#8220;Suite,&#8221;  Pierne &#8220;Solo de Concert,&#8221; Dutilleux &#8220;Sarabande et Cortege,&#8221; Bozza &#8220;Recit, Sicillienne et rondo,&#8221; and a book on bassoon playing called &#8220;Bassoon&#8221; by William Waterhouse. The book looks like at the very least I&#8217;ll get a small history lesson of bassooning out of it.</p>
<p>Plus, tomorrow I only have one class, so hopefully I&#8217;ll be able to have multiple short practice sessions rather than having to have an epically long late night session!</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>So this is my dreaded first post on my bassoon blog. I&#8217;m starting this as a way to keep track of my progress. I&#8217;d keep a journal, but I tend to lose them, so this way I always have access to my record, wherever I am, so long as I have internet access. I&#8217;m kind of using this as a way to take notes on techniques, etc from other bassoonists so that I eventually build my own reference of all things bassoon to use later.</p>
<p>Just a little about me to get going here. I&#8217;m currently a junior in college with a major in bassoon performance as well as another major outside of the music school. I play on a Moosmann 222 professional model and my old Fox 240 student model bassoon.</p>
<p>So, lately, I&#8217;ve been working on Canto XII by Samual Adler for solo bassoon, as well as the Mozart Concerto in Bb, K191. And I&#8217;ve been working on some Milde scale and concert studies as I go. For the last week though, the Adler has been my main focus. Right now, I&#8217;m still trying to take it under tempo, where I can play all of the difficult passages properly. I&#8217;ve been trying to find a recording other than the Judith LeClair one that seems to predominate the recordings of this piece.  I&#8217;m mostly just trying to find another recording to get a different interpretation of the piece. One of my biggest issues with the first movement is just taking my time with it. I always have this urge to rush through sections and play things faster than I should just so that it will sound flashier, and that&#8217;s not the point of the first movement.</p>
<p>In the mean time, I thought that I&#8217;d do some background research on the people to whom the movements are dedicated. They&#8217;re all people who I&#8217;ve heard of before, but I really wanted to get a better sense of who they were and how they played and taught. So:</p>
<p>I.  <span style="color:black;"><span style="text-decoration:underline;">K. David Van Hoesen</span>: He graduated from Eastman in 1950, taught at Oberlin (1950-1954), Cleveland Institute of Music (1952-54), and Eastman (1954-91).  The first movement was dedicated to Van Hoesen because he was a close friend of Adler, when they worked together at Eastman. After listening to the piece many times and learning a lot about Van Hoesen, I can&#8217;t help but feel that the movement really relays a sense of Van Hoesen through it in terms of what Van Hoesen emphasized in his teaching and his temperament. </span></p>
<p><span style="color:black;"> Barick Stees&#8217; site has a lot of information on Mr. Van Hoesen, his former teacher, some of which I will now relay.  Van Hoesen really emphasized listening and learning from other instruments to improve your own sound and repertoire. When it came to vibrato, he suggested listening to famous string players to better understand the underlying concepts of vibrato. He also thought that it should not be employed at all times, but instead limited to longer notes and other specific cases. The vibrato itself should change to accomodate the music you are playing.</span><br />
<span style="color:black;">Van Hoesen encouraged his students to create a tone quality that fit their idea of what tone was. Yet he did give a general picture of what to do to improve tone, such as keeping your throat open and resonating as much as possible throughout your chest. Sitting up straight and supporting your breathing with a full tank of air were also highly recommended. It was a focussed, clear tone that would cut through to the audience best.</span></p>
<p><span style="color:black;">For intonation, keeping your lips loose and your throat open curb sharpness, as well as knowing your instrument&#8217;s tendencies. Pitch can be improved with improving your airstream via speed and focus.</span></p>
<p><span style="color:black;">Van Hoesen stressed keeping fingers close to the instrument and keeping the body as relaxed as possible. Basically, just reduce motion and relax when you play. He also encouraged matching the style of music to the way you use your hands and fingers. The Eastman oboe professor, Robert Sprenkle, passed on articulation techniques from the oboe to Van Hoesen, who then used them to great success. For example, always start the articulation with your tongue on the reed and tongue on the corner of the reed, because this creates a less harsh tone and immediate clarity of pitch. Ending articulation should also be done by putting your tongue back on the reed in different methods, allowing for either a sudden stop or a slow drop off. It&#8217;s important to practice this tonguing at slower speeds than your fastest to achieve an evenness and clarity of the tone from a light, minimum movement tongue motion.</span><br />
<span style="color:black;">When it came to reeds, he used shorter reeds than most to the point where putting any real pressure on the reed would make it go sharp. He also made reeds such that they were very easy to resonate on. Thus, a relaxed embouchure was absolutely required to play properly on his reeds at all. For reed making, he had some interesting tricks. When soaking cane, the pieces that sank after an hour were considered good, and the rest that continued to float after a few hours were usually bad. To make consistent reeds, he advocated the importance of having the first 3/8&#8243; of the reeds all be identical in their thicknesses. The shape he used is most similar to Rieger shape #13, and appears to be a general combination of the major styles that was especially good for higher playing. He believed in putting a lot of time between the stages of making a reed. A reed should dry for 2 weeks at least before wrapping, and another week after you first played on it for 1/4 hour. The crow should be an F, and if it was sharp then the reed was still too hard and needed more scraping.</span></p>
<p>Van Hoesen was a real advocate of musicality. Phrasing is always a must, even on scales, and the different styles of playing should be learned and paid attention to. Every last detail matters when it comes to improving the effect of the piece as a whole.</p>
<p>During lessons, he would conduct while his students played. Rubato should be predictable, thus conductable, and even unmetered parts of music should be preplanned with set timings. Rhythm added to the style of the music, thus was very important.</p>
<p>In lessons, its important to play excerpts regularly, its how you learn them! He encouraged his students to be independent and work together. He didn&#8217;t need to scream or push hard to motivate his students, because the only ones who could truly make it were those were self motivated.</p>
