(Véa también el articulo de Christian Cantrell, Multi-touch and gesture support on the Flash Platform.)

The reports claim that some of the bigger publishing companies (you know, the places that PRINT and DELIVER those paper products) have been working together to create a uniform platform to be able to be provided on a future tablet platform. Time Inc, Conde Nast and Hearst were mentioned in the article by name and were looking to expand their magazines to a digital format (oh do tell).

The report says that these companies will have these Digital versions ready within “WEEKS”! While we may not see a Mac Tablet this year, we may see it poke up through the merky rumor water as fact Q1 2010!

The almighty product that isn’t, the Mac Tablet, has been stirring up the speculation pot for

The almighty product that isn’t, the Mac Tablet, has been stirring up the speculation pot for many months now. Many have tried to figure out why Apple would head in the Tablet computer direction and only come out with one answer: written products, namely newspapers, books, and magazines. The rampant speculation has led at least one magazine company to build a brand new Mac app for the future.

Wired, a noted technology magazine, has built a platform for its magazine for all computers using the Adobe AIR system. Much like the New York Times has done with my beloved Times Reader, the Wired Magazine reader would allow the reader to interact with the magazine itself. This has been introduced through Times Reader with its crossword and ability to enlarge photos, but Wired took this to a whole new level.

Wired’s apparent level of interactivity will be greatly focused in graphics, which as shown by the video below, would bring magazines to a whole new level. I’d totally be down for subscribing to the magazine if I saw this!

(Note: the video below has a lot of background noise, so it’d be to your advantage to turn down the volume…)

I have been recently mulling over this whole iTablet MID thingy that Apple is reportedly working on,

I have been recently mulling over this whole iTablet MID thingy that Apple is reportedly working on, to try to put this in perspective of what the market is ready for, looking back at the way the PC has evolved over the years.

A number of companies in the past 15 years have run after the touchscreen computer market intently, only having had their collective fingers burned badly. I remember AT&T with their EO, Slate computers, and later followed by Momenta (remember that disaster anyone?), 3COM Audrey, various other Internet tablets and more recently Microsoft with their Tablet PCs and the laughable Origami UMPC disaster of a form-factor. None of these have ignited the imagination of the consumers and have been largely relegated to niche uses in certain verticals like healthcare, logisitcs and education.

But the recent phenomena of cloud based computing and increasing interests in devices like the Asus EEPC and the Everex Cloudbook (and to extraploate this to include the OLPC from Nichloas Negroponte and team), I believe the circumstances are right for a unique class of device that straddles somewhat between a mobile phone device and the traditional laptop. And at the sametime, with continued the evolution of the “Software as a Service” (SaaS) concept, cloud computing, media-rich browsers with technologies like Adobe AIR and Microsoft Silverlight for rich mobile content/applications, along with ubiquitous access to bandwidth (like community wifi or celco wifis, and the inevitable “WhiteFi”), all the elements are in place for the evolution of a third type of computing platform/form factor: a ultra-portable, small factor, always on, solid-state, wireless, touch screen, internet cloud based device, for use on the go.

So if Apple takes their iPhone platform, adds a faster energy efficient processor (Intel Atom), OS X with multi-touch, Safari with Adobe Air thrown in, Wifi, with a larger screen at 800×600 resolution, front & back cameras for chat and collaboration, wifi/HSPA, and a good size battery. And added to this, they launch an improved .Mac service, with more storage, iWork “cloud edition” web based producitivity apps, social network application with IM, an improved “back to my Mac” service, media player with Itunes and TV streaming via MediaFLO, we have the perfect “half-way” platform between the iPhone and the Mac.

This type of device will appeal to mobile knowlegde workers who need mobility, but with slightly larger screen to access remote applications, something bigger than an ipod but smaller and less wieldy than a laptop. This will also appeal to students (imagine access to learning content, online collaboration, chat, IM), to gamers, and casual users. And of course, this will be something that Apple can push for certain vertical markets, especially Medical and Education sectors. And at the right price, it might even win over the OLPC as a low cost educational tool.

Hope El Jobso gets another home-run here, where others have failed…

I had hoped to release a beta version of e2publish after this weekend. But I got caught up in some

I had hoped to release a beta version of e2publish after this weekend. But I got caught up in some problems with the Text Layout Framework – so it will be a little while longer. I’m still refining the workarounds, and I’ll be putting in some bug reports soon.

The first problem is that ContainerController.textLength is unreliable. Investigating further, I discovered that the problem occurs when the ContainerController contains a line of text that is not terminated by a newline. Like might happen at the end of the textflow.

I managed to get around the problem as follows (within a class that inherits ContainerController) …..

var textLength:int=this.textLength;

if (textLength==0 && getSubString(textFlow,absoluteStart,absoluteStart+1)!='') textLength=textFlow.textLength-absoluteStart-1;

If textLength is zero, yet we still detect a character in the first position of the ContainerController, then clearly, textLength shouldn’t be zero – so we calculate what it should be assuming that we’re at the end of the textflow and knowing what the total length of the textflow should be.

I’ve utilised a substring method that I found on adobe forums. I was using this anyway in my program – so it was convenient to call it here. No doubt there’s a better workaround that doesn’t rely this method.

But don’t try to override textLength. I tried, and it caused problems. I’m not entirely sure why, but this seemed to cause several other ContainerController methods to fail – as if they rely on the incorrect value.

The second problem I’ve encountered is that ContainerController.getScrollDelta(n) fails with a run time error depending on the contents of the ContainerController. If the ContainerController is empty, or has only newline characters – this causes a failure.

[update: this post has been in the limbo for way too long, I wanted a way to embed the flash videos from Adobe.tv here, but it looks like there is none. I am publishing this post today, in hopes that the reader may find it interesting enough to actually try the links... BTW this here might relate to the silverlight 4 thingy as well! ]

I am yet to sift through all the Adobe MAX 2009 videos.

I find it really generous of Adobe to put all of these up. Even if most of it is marketing, they still share a few gems of information. Really worthwhile for guys like me, who end up being so busy there’s little hope of attending an actual MAX event unless planned at least six months ahead of time.

I chanced upon the Adobe AIR 2.0 preview video: http://tv.adobe.com/watch/max-2009-develop/whats-coming-in-adobe-air-2-/

(I wish there was a way to embed flash videos from Adobe.tv into WordPress…)

To me the most important ones are the support for USB (mass storage devices) and native apps (so you can now open a word document from within AIR). I am still a bit skep about the performance, but, I am sure this is going to improve over the new version too…

Check these videos out. Kinda nice. Kinda exciting.

Cheers.

S.

[update:

1. there's a lot more videos on AIR2 in the complete video list, but I did like this one by Kevin Lynch as well: http://tv.adobe.com/watch/max-2009-develop/kevin-lynch-demos-adobe-air-2-features/

2. I prefer the adobe media player for working out all of it. nicer neater faster AIR based video playing...]

Lately I’ve become preoccupied with browser tabs. Yes, those boring little gray bars with an

Lately I’ve become preoccupied with browser tabs. Yes, those boring little gray bars with an “x”on them. That’s because tabs, inefficient as they can be, provide us with an interesting real-world metaphor. Your family is a tab. Work is a tab. Your friends are a tab. Your significant other is a tab. We address the people and information in each tab, trying to respect the sanctity of each. Sometimes we fail, which unfortunately leads to divorces, drinking problems or lost jobs.

But the Real-Time Web Masters of the Universe are trying to reform our tabular nature. First, it occurred with widgets, information boxes and customized homepages. Suddenly, we could create nice window panes with helpful information that kept you in one place longer. If you found something interesting or urgent enough, you could click on it to launch a tangential tab and address it.

Then, Facebook and Twitter did something crazy: It combined disparate people and information — things that typically demanded their own tabs — and poured it all over us in one fluid current. It cut down the number of tabs because you can consume, publish and “like” information all in one area. Those companies’ ecosystems have flourished to customize the experience with filters, allowing people to cut huge steaks of information into manageable bites. Other start-ups, like Threadsy, are following suit.

The Web’s new aversion to tabs — coupled with a general lack of bandwidth to handle our real-time activities — has been so severe that it’s migrated us from the cloudy browser back down to the dusty desktop. The prevalence of Adobe AIR apps, which now many can’t imagine living without, signal an ironic twist for an industry once obsessed with the idea that everything should be in a browser.

But as we combine all the capabilities these tools provide us, we must do so carefully; we must be mindful of our innately tabular nature and past mistakes driven by tech companies’ insatiable thirst to be the all-in-one gatekeeper. As people, the idea of having information flow to us in one spot sounds appealing. But sometimes, we might just prefer to separate it, even as we’re consciously aware that it takes more time. Finding the golden mean between flow and tabs will be essential for the future of the Web, to keep it a place that complements, rather than disrupts, our lives.

The Difference Between Tabs, Networks and Flows

Tabs are not networks; they are a thing that walls off action. It’s easy to confuse tabs with networks because certain actions frequently get executed between you and the same set of people. Flows, on the other hand, radically combine the actions of your tabs and your networks (people) that operate within them.

Contrary to what some believe, the emergence of flow-based information streams wasn’t enabled by a social revolution to undermine hierarchy. It was an evolution based on the untenable nature of our tabular lives. Toggling has become too difficult. At 11 a.m., I have a meeting with my boss. At noon, I have to drive my friend to the airport. At 1 p.m., I have a meeting with a customer. Addressing this back-and-forth isn’t just a matter of calendaring; it should be a matter of managing flow. Unfortunately, most people still tab-toggle between phone lines, e-mail accounts, social networks, or calendars to interact with the people and information they need to achieve each of these tasks. Each toggle doesn’t seem like a lot of time or effort on its own, but taken in total, it adds up.

The results from this approach are plain to see: You’re late for the meeting, you miss the plane, or you’re not home in time for dinner.

Flow can address this problem by helping you pull the people and information you need to address each of those actions to the best of your ability, as quickly and efficiently as possible. That said, we shouldn’t overlook how challenging this will be for most people who live tabular lives. As much as I respect Clay Shirky’s notion that filter failures are a bigger problem than information overload itself, I don’t buy it entirely.

Even in an ideal world where we enjoy better filters, we will still suffer from both information overload and (due to the prevalence of social networks) people overload. At a certain point, people might prefer a full-blown visual or physical separation — much like they were accustomed to with tabs — instead of a filter.

Why Tabs Are Still Valuable

Despite the time sink they can create, tabs and tabular actions encourage innovation. We would be wrong to replace tabs with flow entirely. If success is only measured by how something fits into a massive flow aggregation, we could miss out on some great ideas. And open standards and APIs can only help so much to prevent this problem, too. In fact, the idea that open standards might save us is a pipe dream. As Tim O’Reilly pointed out this week, the Web’s power players will hinder such an effort for competitive reasons. Consequently, the decision to keep some aspects of our tabular life might be a commercial reality as much as it is a remnant of the way in which we compartmentalize people and information in the real-world.

Flows represent a tremendous opportunity for us to respond faster to change and better understand the world around us, but we should always make time to go into a tab every once and awhile to try something new.

Adobe Air is a new software platform from Adobe which mixes JavaScript and Flash technologies to enable developers to make rich Internet applications that can run on desktop computers. It is remarkable in the world of proprietary applications in the sense that it has included Linux support early on.

My previous post about Twitter clients might have hinted that I have had bad experience with Air applications in general. In this post I will vent of some of the grudges I have with this new platform on Linux.

This, again, not a very fair review. I have not taken the time to investigate the odds and ends of the platform and will overlook the developer’s point of view on the platform. I have heard over the tubes that programmers working on applications for the Air platform appreciate it, but that’s as far as my investigation (or lack thereof) have taken me.

Air applications aren’t so cross-platform

I have tried 5 Adobe Air applications, mostly Twitter clients: Spaz, TweetDeck, Seesmic Desktop, DestroyTwitter, Tumbleweed, Twhirl. Of those 6 applications only the later 3 worked out of the box on Ubuntu Hardy. The fact cross-platform compatibility isn’t guaranteed by using Air seems to be well-known of developers and most some them will not officially support Linux as an operating platform. This is a very bad average for a technology that is supposed to be cross-platform.

Air applications don’t fail gracefully

The failure mode for each of the non-working applications in also needs to be taken into account when judging quality of the cross-platform Air applications. The behavior of the applications I have tried is less than stellar. TweetDeck is supposed to work on Linux but in the cases where it fails, it shows a semi-helpful error message. Earlier version of TweetDeck failed in the same with Seemic Desktop fails. Seemisc Desktop works partially but the mail display of the application stays empty. SpaZ shows anything usable. Applications failing to work in such a way are very frustrating for the users because they are left to figure out how to use applications that are put in a undetermined state because of holes in the runtime.

Air applications that work on Linux won’t work on all desktops

Adobe Air doesn’t support anything but GNOME and KDE. I usually have the core components of both KDE and GNOME installed on the computers I use, so running applications relying on either desktop environment is not a problem. This is not the case with Adobe Air applications since they apparently rely on some specific features of GNOME or KDE window managers to work properly. This is something that is very seldom seen in the world of X-Window applications. X-Window Applications relying on components of either desktop will usually be happy running on any window manager.

Despite this, Twhirl will work okay-ish in OpenBox with only some graphical glitches to show for.

Adobe Air requires a compositing manager to decent.

I will admit that I’m rather old school and I have not joined the Compiz bandwagon. I did not use any compositing manager on any desktop I use. That means that all Adobe Air applications that use shaped windows, ie: all the ones I have tried, looked awful until I caved-in and enabled the limited compositing feature of KDE 3.5.

Air applications tend focus on the look

Look and feel was never a strong point of Adobe Flash. Flash based application usually don’t try to blend in in the rest of the system. In Adobe Air, Adobe are obviously trying to enforce some Feel in applications, but on the Look side, a lot still leaves to be desired. All Air applications I have tried put a very strong emphasis on design and not so much on blending with the user’s desktop. DestroyTwitter had been designed with fonts a lot smaller than the default size on my desktop. On my CRT screen, it made the application hardly usable. Even the option to use larger font in DestroyTwitter did not do anything to improve the situation.

The worst offender in that category in the applications I have tried is without a doubt Tumblweed, an offline client for the Tumblr web blog system. I had hoped this application would be nicer than editing blog entries through a web site, which is something I dislike. I was mistaken…

The application was removed after a few seconds as it obviously did not focus very much on making editing pleasant.

Okay, I swear this will be my last Twitter inspired post…

Gratulacje.

No i stało się.

Stay tuned.

At Microsoft’s Professional Developer Conference in Los Angeles this morning, Seesmic announce

At Microsoft’s Professional Developer Conference in Los Angeles this morning, Seesmic announced that its Seesmic Desktop, a popular tool among Twitter power users, is coming to Windows. Finally!

Um, hasn’t Seemsic run on Windows all along? Well, yes, but that’s because it’ s written in Adobe AIR, an application platform that lets programmers write Flash applications that can run outside the browser. (That’s a dumbed-down explanation of AIR, but enough to get the gist across, I hope.) One of the principal selling points of AIR is that it lets developers write one app that runs on Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux, as Seesmic Desktop does.

In theory, the existence of an AIR version of Seesmic should eliminate the need for the company to bother with a Windows one. To date, though, AIR hasn’t been a miracle cure for incompatible operating systems. Some good stuff has been built with the technology–including Seesmic, archrival TweetDeck, and Times Reader–but AIR is notorious for hogging memory and computing cycles. And AIR apps’ user interfaces tend to feel a little foreign, too–there’s still something to be said for Windows apps that feel like Windows apps, and Mac ones that feel Maclike.

The state of AIR feels uncannily similar to the situation with Sun’s Java back in the 1990s. Java was also supposed to let programmers stop worrying about incompatible operating systems. Companies built ambitious products such as entire office suites in Java. But while Java did have a major impact on the world–among many other things, it’s the basis of RIM’s BlackBerry OS–it did little to reduce the need for native applications for Windows, OS X, and Linux. That was in part because it had a reputation for…hogging memory and computing cycles, and for producing apps that felt a little foreign.

Bottom line: Inside the browser, platform-independent technologies have flourished, including open standards such as JavaScript and proprietary ones such as Adobe’s Flash. Outside the browser, not so much. Come to think of it, I like Seesmic’s entirely Web-based app a lot more than the AIR version.

Oddly enough, there’s major AIR news today: Adobe has unveiled a beta of AIR 2, which is supposed to be less piggish and to permit more native-feeling programs. (It may or may not be a coincidence that Adobe announced the new version during Microsoft’s big conference–you be the judge.) I still like the idea of platforms like AIR, and am glad Adobe is continuing to plug away at at it. Unlike some people, I’m not an AIR hater. But come to think of it, I’ve tried a whole bunch of AIR apps over the past year, and usually abandon them pretty darn quickly.

For now, I understand completely why Seesmic decided to go native in Windows. Wonder how long it’ll be until there’s absolutely no reason to write an app for a particular OS?

A mere week after Adobe Systems reported that it would be shedding nearly 700 employees or 9% of its

A mere week after Adobe Systems reported that it would be shedding nearly 700 employees or 9% of its total worldwide workforce, the company is releasing two highly anticipated new products that have been in the works for a while: Flash Player 10.1 and AIR 2.0.

Both of the products are being released with a ‘beta’ label at the same time for all 3 major operating systems (Windows, Mac and Linux) and x86-based netbooks, and are available now via Adobe Labs.

The links to the products are now live: Flash Player and AIR.

People who were still hoping for a beta release of the new Flash Player for mobile will be somewhat disappointed by the fact that they’ll have to exercise even more patience.

But first things first.

Both the new Flash Player for desktop browsers and the latest iteration of the rather popular cross-platform runtime environment for desktop apps were announced in the beginning of October and previewed at the recent Adobe MAX 2009 event (see video below). That means there aren’t too many surprises left with regards to what the upgraded versions bring, so we’ll just give you a quick run-down.

Both Adobe AIR 2 and Flash Player 10.1:

- boast support for multi-touch and gestures (yes, you’d need a machine with a touch screen)
- include a global error handler, which enables devs to write a single handler to process all runtime errors
- (finally) support local microphone access, so you’ll no longer need to first pass through a server in order to record audio locally on both Flash Platform runtimes

Adobe Flash Player 10.1 now also leverages hardware decoding of H.264 video on Windows PCs, netbooks and mobile devices.

Want all that goodness on your mobile phone, too? Hold your horses: while a public beta of Adobe Flash Player 10.1 for Palm webOS is expected later this year, Google Android support is expected no sooner than early 2010, and support for Blackberry smartphones will likely take even more time to be added.

Also new in Adobe AIR 2.0 and worthy of a mention:

- Native process API: enables apps to communicate with native applications on local machines
- Mass storage device detection: plug in your Flip camera or that USB stick you got as a gift at the last conference you attended, and AIR 2 applications will be able to detect them
- Open document API: with it, AIR apps can ‘ask’ the OS what the default application is associated with files and function accordingly
- Improved socket support: think AIR-powered local servers and P2P apps
- Speedier WebKit: updated version that includes a faster JavaScript engine and new HTML5/CSS3 capabilities

via Adobe Releases Flash Player 10.1 And AIR 2.0 – Both Include Multi-touch Support.
