[update: this post has been in the limbo for way too long, I wanted a way to embed the flash videos

[update: this post has been in the limbo for way too long, I wanted a way to embed the flash videos from Adobe.tv here, but it looks like there is none. I am publishing this post today, in hopes that the reader may find it interesting enough to actually try the links... BTW this here might relate to the silverlight 4 thingy as well! ]

I am yet to sift through all the Adobe MAX 2009 videos.

I find it really generous of Adobe to put all of these up. Even if most of it is marketing, they still share a few gems of information. Really worthwhile for guys like me, who end up being so busy there’s little hope of attending an actual MAX event unless planned at least six months ahead of time.

I chanced upon the Adobe AIR 2.0 preview video: http://tv.adobe.com/watch/max-2009-develop/whats-coming-in-adobe-air-2-/

(I wish there was a way to embed flash videos from Adobe.tv into WordPress…)

To me the most important ones are the support for USB (mass storage devices) and native apps (so you can now open a word document from within AIR). I am still a bit skep about the performance, but, I am sure this is going to improve over the new version too…

Check these videos out. Kinda nice. Kinda exciting.

Cheers.

S.

[update:

1. there's a lot more videos on AIR2 in the complete video list, but I did like this one by Kevin Lynch as well: http://tv.adobe.com/watch/max-2009-develop/kevin-lynch-demos-adobe-air-2-features/

2. I prefer the adobe media player for working out all of it. nicer neater faster AIR based video playing...]

About a month ago, Adobe was holding its annual MAX conference in Los Angeles (we mentioned last wee

About a month ago, Adobe was holding its annual MAX conference in Los Angeles (we mentioned last week the MATRIX presentation). With such an event, there are always the rumored expectations, the expected surprise announcements and the great developers sessions. Obviously for an Adobe Solution Partner it is the place to be, but when business keeps you from attending, there’re still the online archives (http://2009.max.adobe.com/online/).

Key2Flex being based in the Philippines, we did not attend, but for ourselves and for readers that couldn’t make it either we are trying to summarize here what we gathered about it.

Flash 10.1
For most the release of Flash 10.1 was THE announcement of the conference, made by Adobe’s CTO Kevin Lynch. During his keynote Kevin demonstrated how improved performance becomes. Obviously, one smart device was in everybody’s head listening to the keynote. But when Kevin Lynch said that Adobe secured for Flash Player 10.1 agreements with 19 out of 20 mobile devices makers, the hope to see Flash on iPhone instantly vanished.
Nevertheless, there is much to bet that the pressure is on and that Apple won’t resist it much longer.
With Flash Player 10.1, Kevin proved that smooth rendering of a 3-hour movie on smart phones is possible.

Flash and iPhone
There was still a pretty good news for Flash developers: they will be able to deploy their development for iPhone, Soon to be released Flash Pro CS5 will allow developing applications for iPhone in ActionScript. There will be a “iPhone” option in the deployment combobox that will, in short, extract the code for the SWF and put it through a compiler to make it run on iPhone. Flash Pro CS5 will permit the developers to test their work on a USB-connected iPhone. With this, Adobe is assured the sales of Flash Pro CS5 will be boosted from existing ActionScript developers and new developers attracted by the idea to easily develop for iPhone.

Flex 4
Adobe is giving Flex a much anticipated upgrade with Flex 4, scheduled to be released early 2010. With Flex 4, developers are given a large and innovative set of Spark UI components. Adobe is ensuring compatibility between the new (Spark) and old (Halo) components.
For business application developers like us renderers are greatly improved. Flex 4 seems really exciting and allowing such a seamless designer-developer collaboration, but it seems also challenging to get a good grip on all the new tools made available.
About Flex in general, the session titled “How Not to Code Flex” is quite interesting (http://2009.max.adobe.com/online/session/38.) And because we are very keen on performance and productivity, we also liked the session about “Tackling Memory and Performance” (http://2009.max.adobe.com/online/session/74.)

Adobe MAX is still obviously a very corporate event and, if we like what we see, most of the announcements were still about upcoming 2010 releases. In the meantime, there’s business as usual to run, and we cannot wait for Flex|360, the very hands-on conference of Flex developers that will also be held in California, San Jose, March 2010.

We know you have noticed that Key2Flex had been pretty silent for the past few months… Well, not onl

We know you have noticed that Key2Flex had been pretty silent for the past few months…

Well, not only our team has been keeping up with satisfying our existing clients, but also we got the chance to start work on a market breaking Front Office application for Brokerage and Stock Trading.

Obviously Flex is already a tool of choice in the financial industry but little did we know that, as we were presenting our own mock-up, Adobe MAX 09 was also giving the headlines to the same type of application realized for Morgan Stanley by Lab49: MATRIX dubbed as “the most ambitious (and) advanced Flex project within the financial services industry and one of the largest project in Flex history”.

If our project isn’t as ambitious and extensive as Morgan Stanley’s MATRIX, it responds to all the needs of a smaller scaled brokerage company. For small and medium size brokers and traders, there is much to win in embarking the RIA movement. Customer expectations in such firms are high. Their clients are used to high quality, personalized, and relevant services that are hardly answered with the “one-size-fits-all” concept those firms could afford in traditional web platforms. With RIA developments, these institutions have the potential to deliver a unique trading experience bringing high value to end users with all its marketing returns.

The announcement around Morgan Stanley’s MATRIX at Adobe MAX has been echoed by a similar project at JP MORGAN: MORCOM. The banker assesses that MORCOM “provides J.P. Morgan’s clients with access to rich functionality across a diverse range of products and services offered by the Investment Bank (…) and further emphasizes our commitment to offering our clients one solution, one brand and one outstanding client experience.”

It is very exciting to see these platforms come under the spotlight.

This demonstrates what Key2Flex always believed in: the potential of Flex for full business application is yet to be exploited. Flex at the enterprise level will allow major productivity improvements and more friendly business applications.

Key2Flex is working on setting up a demo of its trading platform… if interested, just let us know!

http://events.adobe.co.uk/cgi-bin/event.cgi?country=fr&eventid=9011

A suivre.

Wow! This morning was very news worthy!

First there was the announcements regarding Flash CS5.
The big thing here was the new support for native iPhone Apps.
Apparently one can, with the Flash Professional CS5, write AS3 code that compiles as native iPhone application.
They announced it at MAX a few hours ago thru this entertaining video:

Nice!

To me there’s other cool stuff in Adobe Flash Professional CS5 that is really interesting, like the xml based FLAs and the Text Layout Framework.

Mike Chambers here has a post that gets into more details of the iPhone support part.

Adobe has also released a few applications that you can try on your iPhone right away! I feel that it’s a good idea to read thru the Developer FAQs and Aditya Bansod’s article here. I did find the LLVM pretty interesting. There’s a paper and a presentation to check out on llvm.org. For an iPhone a developer can actually use RTMP, remote shared objects and AMF APIs of the flash player. Developers will also have access to the file system and SQLite APIs of AIR 2.0. I am sure we will find out eventually that some stuff is not available, but, what the heck! There will be workarounds…hehe

The idea of a native iPhone Flash Player is still not around…I see places where they say “its on the cards…”, but, there is no mention of a date. The Flash Player 10.1 is going to be available soon though! Again it was announced at Adobe MAX today. Check out Kevin Lynch introducing 10.1 in this video:

This kinda excites me more than the iPhone support. Flash Player 10.1 on Android, Net Books and even on set-top boxes for television providing seamless experience is an awesome awesome wow! More reach, more support for my products and services now.

Adobe’s even working on Slider – a mobile optimized port of the Flex 4 codebase.

Along with all of this Adobe also announced a host of other betas available! Check out the list below:

The Flex 4 SDK Beta 2 release

The Flash Builder 4 Beta 2 release

The Flash Catalyst Beta 2 release

and then there’s also the Adobe ColdFusion Builder beta 2 release

and the Adobe LiveCycle Data Services 3 beta release

I also found two very interesting project on Adobe labs.

The first is called workflowlab. A tool (AIR) that allows one to create and share workflows and best practices. Project Managers, Designers and developers can collaborate and contribute to a project in a nicer way with this. The big part is that they used the Flash Builder and Flash Catalyst to create this utility!

Finally, the second one is about something that is really close to my heart too. Adobe Story is an application for collaborative script development. I tried a few scenes of a sample movie script with it. Works really well! The code hints like auto-correct/completion features are really neat! What even nicer is that it supports export to a lot of formats including MS Word, Final Draft (Word and FD are my preferred screen-writing applications) and also to PDF, CSV, XML and plain text! (There’s probably an AIR application available too, but, I have not tried that as yet). The Story beta was out on Sept 10, so I am a little late (and a little out of place) in talking about it here, but, with all the great up coming stuff, I wanted to blog all of it together.

Really cool stuff happening around. Lots to look out for.

If you are attending Adobe MAX, I’d like to invite you to come to what I think will be a fun BYOL (bring your own laptop) lab that I am co-presenting with Holly Schinsky.

I’ve always been fascinated with data visualization, especially data that needs analysis as it is generated. For example, financial transaction data can contain immediately useful trending information that is invisible without some visualization. Credit card transaction data can contain data indicating fraudulent use. I once worked on a project where we analyzed cellular call data in real-time looking for indications that a phone had been cloned (old-school cellular phones could easily be “cloned” before things went digital).

I thought that this type of data visualization would make for an interesting lab at MAX and invited Holly (Flex and Data Services guru) to help me put it together. Holly and I have been working hard to make sure that this is both an informative and fun 90 minute session.

Here’s the description from the MAX site: Discover how the real-time messaging capabilities of BlazeDS and LiveCycle Data Services ES can be combined with the data visualization capabilities of Flex to result in some very interesting applications. In this lab, you will learn how to produce and consume a real-time data feed and how to pass that data to various data visualization components to create an interactive dashboard.

We’ll explore the basics of publish/subscribe messaging with BlazeDS and LiveCycle Data Services as it applies to real-time data feeds and learn how to take that feed and turn it into something very visual and compelling. We will first employ some of the Flex charting capabilities and then look at how to plot data on interactive maps.

The session times are Monday, Oct 5th at 2:30pm and Wednesday, Oct 7th at 1:30pm. Both sessions are filling quickly. The Oct 7th session is already 70% full – maybe I need to show you with a bar chart?

See ya at MAX!

After winning two awards last year for our “MyHome – Your Intelligent Home” and the “Nasdaq Market Replay”, it was with great interest we here at Hello Group were awaiting the email from Adobe telling us if our very cool application – “Changing Diabetes Barometer” had made it to the next level in the prestigious Adobe MAX Awards.

Today the email came, informing us that it had made it to the Semifinals… a great accomplishment thinking about some of the troubles the project had been undergoing from its inception to its transition into production, and then even some after that (as it most often is the case, I suppose).

Check it out…
http://www.changingdiabetesbarometer.com/

The system was build in Adobe Flex 3 with an architecture based on PureMVC MultiCore with a backend in .NET running a MS SQL Server 2005 and a WebORB tying it all together.

If you don’t know it already, the Adobe MAX conference is always a great learning and networking exp

If you don’t know it already, the Adobe MAX conference is always a great learning and networking experience and this year it is sounding better than ever. They’re offering some new things I believe will really help developers get the most out of their experience with the addition of more lab-type sessions, Birds of a Feather discussions at lunch-time etc and more sessions overall. There will also be a ton more content this year focusing on LiveCycle ES and Enterprise RIA which is particularly cool to me as someone who works on both the client and server side and want to know my options for different business solutions. And of course there are always the sessions focusing on Adobe’s creative tools, not to mention really big secret announcements and a sneak peek at upcoming coolness seen only there first.

As a developer attending a conference, I have always been one to seek out as many lab-type sessions as possible believing in the extended benefit of working on something hands-on while learning. The Adobe people must have realized the value in this as well and decided to offer a new alternative to lab-type sessions called BYOL – (Bring Your Own Laptop), where you can use your own laptop to work along with the class. You will still be given a handout of the code lessons etc but instead of using a workstation provided, you simply use your own laptop. The biggest pro here is that you are comfortable on your own laptop already and will have the final version without having to copy it off quickly before getting to your next session. You will however have to be sure that you have the necessary requirements for the class on your laptop prior to attending, and these requirements are posted along with the session details on the MAX portal.

This year I’m fortunate enough to have the opportunity to co-present a session on two different days with Greg Wilson entitled, “Making Real-Time Data Come Alive with Flex Data Visualization.” I’m very excited about this session because I think it’s a topic that is great fun and offers a unique learning experience by giving people a taste of not only using data visualization with real-time data, but experience using Messaging with Data Services on BlazeDS. From this session you will learn how to do push-subscribe messaging acting in both a publisher and subscriber role as well as how to take real-time data and visualize it in a Flex Charting component. We will also talk about the Tour de Flex Dashboard, so you are sure to walk away with some really cool stuff here.

The session times are Monday, Oct 5th at 2:30pm and Wednesday, Oct 7th at 1:30pm. So if you have not already registered for Adobe MAX 2009 then what are you waiting for?! Hope to see you soon in L.A.

Guys, it’s that time of the year again: MAX regsitration doors flew open yesterday at max.adobe.com. As this year there won’t be a MAX in Europe, due to the hard economic crisis that has banged us all in the head, this is your only chance for the biggest Adobe developer meeting worldwide. Plus, you can save tons of money if you book your ticket now. And make sure to get a cheap flight there. If you can’t afford a flight, I suggest you start rowing your boat tomorrow. Here the short version:
