Adobe AIR

1 . HTML / javascript:

-HTML
-JavaScript
-CSS
-XHTML

\

/

2 . Flash:

\

/

3. PDF:

Although I’m a month late posting this ad campaign I figured I’d post it anyways. I know a few Rugby players here state side and when I ran across the ad I figured I’d have to give a shout out. Regarding the ad campaign itself I’m not a big fan of that funky green but aside from that… it is, what it is!

I went to the public library today to pick up an assortment of books. (Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist, Photoshop for Dummies, and a couple of books on starting a career in real estate. Never hurts to have a backup plan, right?)

Jonathan had expressed an interest in making our own bookshelves and cabinets, so I looked up the general location of such books.

As I was looking for section 684, I happened upon some InDesign books (yes, there is a journalistic component to this blog). I flipped through a couple but decided I’m not nerdy enough to bring work home with me.

I continued looking for cabinet-making books. Turns out they were only 12 books down from the InDesign ones. On the same shelf and everything.

I guess both involve design… I don’t know, it just struck me as really odd.

So I did a little research. Cabinet-making and publishing technology aren’t anywhere near each other in the Dewey Decimal System. Building is around 680, and graphic design/printing is 760. I guess this library is just thinly stocked.

Well, OSU-Texas Tech is about to come on. I really don’t know what to expect.

The up and coming new social media site bite.ca is trying to make an impression on you with their new ad campaign. The campaign itself was created by Tenzing Interactive Media from Toronto Canada. The website bite.ca is full of viral videos and college age students making fools out of themselves, what more can you ask for?

After looking over these ads I have to say at first I had a little smirk on my face especially for the one that says “protected sex going on”, I love it. For some reason though the idea gets a little stale after that, I don’t know exactly why but for me it does.

Don’t get me wrong the other door hangers are funny too but I guess they just don’t have as much punch as the “protected sex going on”. In any case the website itself seems to have potential and we’ll be keeping our eyes on them to see where they go from here. Good luck bite.ca

Advertising agency Saatchi & Saatchi has just released their latest work for the Sci-Fi channel, one of the coolest channels on television by the way! The ad campaign is themed “Humans Are Among Us”! The artwork, illustration is phenomenal, please do click on the images to see the detailed work.

I must admit when I think science fiction all of these images do come to mind. Although the genre has changed dramatically over the years with the advancement of computer technology its refreshing to see a shout out to the original days of science fiction.

I had never heard of the ad agency Robert/Boisen & Like-Minded before today but from the looks of it I think I’ll be hearing a lot more from them in the future. Puma commissioned them to design a new ad campaign for the new product release of the 2009 “Puma King” soccer shoe. I’ve found 3 of the ads and I’ve got to say they are very impressive.

Please do click on the actual image to see the fine detail the illustrator “Evergrunge” put into this work. The time and care it must have taken to put together this concept must have been considerable. The above image you’ll find everything from skulls to loco motives but somehow the illustrator pulls it off and everything fits together flawlessly.

Up next we have the Fredrik Ljungberg interpretation and you can see that its quite a drastic change from the first image. This image is all white and if you click to see the details you’ll find images of angels, harps and majestic creatures. I’ve never heard of Fredrik Ljungberg but besides being a great foot baller he must be a pretty nice guy too!

Last but not least we have the illustration for foot baller Alexander Hleb. Wow this guy must be a supreme bad ass because this illustration screams wicked and evil! If you click the image to see the details you’ll find images of pit bulls, devils and dragons! It seems to me like Alexander Hleb is probably a bad boy on the pitch.

Great work to the design and creative crew at Robert/Boisen & Like-Minded you guys are definitely on the Casualty of Design radar and we look forward to seeing more of you work!

Who’da thunk it but my peeps down south of the equator in Venezuela, advertising agency: DRAFTFCB just stomped their proverbial hooves putting the world on notice… we have Photoshop and we know how to use it!

This latest advertisement is for a company called Optica Caroni a popular sun and eye glass company in Latin America.
I like these ads because for one the clay animation and graphic design are spot on. Aside from that this ad gets away from your typical eye wear advertisement of a good looking couple standing on a bluff somewhere looking at the sunset.

Agency DRAFTFCB did a great job conveying a fun light hearted approach at the same time delivering a message “our glasses will protect your eyes”.

Kudos and props to the crew that put this all together!

It helps to keep a blog updated. So this is just a short (relatively so) post to show off a commercial I made for a contest back in the spring.

Some context: the contest was sponsored by Warner Bros. and the producers of the feature film Watchmen, based on the groundbreaking graphic novel from the 1980s. The film was directed by Zack Snyder, who also made 300.

One of the characters is Adrian Veidt, an industrialist whose company makes perfume, hair spray, toys, athletic shoes, and also runs an airline. The task was to pick one of the products, download the graphics and assets provided, and build a commercial.

Mine was for the perfume Nostalgia.

I enhanced the perfume ball asset using Adobe AfterEffects, recorded the voice-over and assembled the music bed with Adobe Audition, and comped the entire piece with Adobe Premiere.

I didn’t get selected, but I did have fun doing it. And showing it off, too.

verdict: Improved workflow integration, new symbol handling and multiple page support give Fireworks

verdict: Improved workflow integration, new symbol handling and multiple page support give Fireworks a new lease of life.when Adobe took over Macromedia, there was doubt over whether it would carry on developing Fireworks. Without the new shared CS3 interface, and with some of its promised features still missing in the press beta under review, it certainly seems semi-detached. But the good news is that Fireworks is still here and firing on all cylinders.

Fireworks offers a good mix of vector- and bitmap-editing capabilities, but naturally, it can’t compete on all points with Adobe’s graphical flagships. Instead, all three are now designed to work hand-in-hand thanks to Fireworks CS3’s new ability to open Photoshop PSD and Illustrator AI files. To make the integration as smooth as possible, Fireworks’ handling of layers has been reworked to support hierarchical groups and subgroups, which makes working with complex layouts more manageable.

In addition, Fireworks CS3 now supports Photoshop’s bitmap-based blend modes, as well as layer effects such as bevels, glows and drop shadows, all of which can be applied as live effects. This isn’t the explosion of new power that it may seem, as Fireworks already offered its own equivalents and still does for backwards compatibility. However, being able to apply all effects from a single dialog is more efficient and encourages experimentation, and it also means rich layered designs can be opened from, and now also saved to, PSD format.

The main advantage of Fireworks’ primarily vector approach is the speed and control with which designs can be built up. This efficiency is boosted now with a range of pre-provided building blocks. There are a number of new Auto Shapes with built-in editing intelligence that you can drag onto your layouts, such as calendars, flowcharts and an Inspire option, which randomly generates a new shape each time you click on it. More significant are the building blocks in the new Common Library palette, including more flowchart symbols, graphical

bullets and Flex Widgets,

which are also shared with the latest Flash. There are pre-built user interface components, such as button, panel, button bar and combo box, each of which can be dragged onto your layout to rapidly create an interface for a RIA (Rich Internet Application).

What makes the components in the Common Library different is that they represent a new form of “rich symbol” – rich, not in terms of appearance (their styling is simple), but in terms of editing potential. Previously, adding a styled instance of a button was a laborious manual process; now, you can simply change the button’s label text and its Up, Over and Down state colours in the new Symbol Properties palette. Both rich and traditional symbols also offer new support for intelligent “9-slice scaling”. This lets you control how each section of a symbol will scale horizontally and vertically, so you can ensure a button keeps the same rounded corners without distortion whatever size it’s displayed.

All symbols created in Fireworks CS3, including their scaling settings, are fully supported in Flash CS3 Professional, and you can also export RIA interfaces created with the Common Library widgets as MXML for use in Flex. The onward integration with Fireworks’ longstanding partner Dreamweaver remains even more important. Here, the exported CSS/HTML code has been tightened up for more efficient CSS-based positioning and menu handling, with styles saved in the document head rather than inline. Most impressive is the ability to directly paste any copied object directly into Dreamweaver CS3 – if you need to edit it later, the link and the optimisation settings are automatically maintained.

All this would be enough to make Fireworks CS3 the most significant upgrade for years, but there’s one standout feature remaining: using the new Pages palette, you can quickly add multiple pages to your design. This is handy when trying out design ideas, especially since you can quickly copy existing pages and share a single web layer’s slicing and link information. Even better, you can add shared elements to a master page and add links between pages and then output your multiple pages to HTML as a fully working site prototype, ready for fully interactive browser preview.

While at first it might look semi-detached, it becomes clear Fireworks CS3 plays a key role in Adobe’s web platforms. It has a new focus and function, moving beyond simple graphic creation to enable rich and rapid site design and prototyping.

Dreamweaver CS3 is the first Adobe -branded version of the feature-rich Web-site editor that was last released as Macromedia’s Dreamweaver 8. After Adobe bought Macromedia, it began integrating Dreamweaver with Photoshop and other applications in the Adobe Creative Suite, and Dreamweaver CS3 is the impressive result.

In its basic interface and features, it’s the same Dreamweaver that advanced Web designers know by heart, but Adobe has brought it into the 21st century with full CSS support through tools that validate and manage style sheets, as well as a new graphic interface for Adobe’s “Spry Framework,” a set of JavaScript code snippets built into Dreamweaver for displaying dynamic elements such as collapsing menus, database items, or XML feeds. Any developer can download the Spry framework separately, from Adobe’s site, and use the code in any Web editor, but only Dreamweaver has it built in.

The new version is an essential upgrade for any Dreamweaver user who wants to build up-to-date CSS-based code, and it offers effortless drag-and-drop integration with Photoshop. Potential newcomers may want to compare Dreamweaver with Microsoft’s compact Expression Web before taking the plunge. Both programs let you create sites from templates that impose design consistency, and both automatically display syntax options when you’re editing code. Dreamweaver, however, gets bonus points for supporting Secure FTP uploads, and it’s the only choice if you want automated code-completion on PHP and ColdFusion pages. Dreamweaver also includes prebuilt dynamic widgets such as an “Accordion” that expands to display hidden data when a user clicks on a title.

Even more now than in earlier versions, Dreamweaver acts like a powerful, smooth-running machine, with up to a dozen control panels, multitabbed inspectors, toolbars, and other controls arrayed around its editing screen. If you like the feeling that you can do anything on the page in the editing window, and that you can fine-tune even the most complexly organized Web site, Dreamweaver is the program to choose.

On the other hand, Dreamweaver’s overstuffed menus and toolbars can be intimidating and confusing, and you need to pay close attention to its messages that remind you to upload auxiliary files to your remote site when publishing. I was also frustrated by the way Dreamweaver’s right-click menu lacks the context-sensitive options in Expression Web’s menu, and by the way Dreamweaver exiles its tools that manage dynamic data to hard-to-find property panels away from the main editing window. Expression Web also uses property panels when you want them, but it offers a compact set of commonly used options from the right-click context menu.

I also found Dreamweaver’s WYSIWYG editing more fragile than Expression Web’s. I kept colliding with baffling error messages or nonfunctioning code if I deleted something from the WYSIWYG window but forgot to remove the invisible tag that contained it. The code for Spry widgets, for example, sometimes got corrupted so that dynamic elements stopped being dynamic—and Dreamweaver would only tell me that the code seemed to be broken, not how to fix it. Also, Dreamweaver’s help system manages to be bloated and inadequate at the same time, with a sprawling list of topics but laconic explanations of the actual steps. It’s infuriating to find that links on the local help pages to “related information” usually turn out to be exactly the same page, but on the Web instead of on your local machine.

Despite its problems, Dreamweaver remains a colossus among Web editors, and the only one that comes with an application—Adobe Device Central—that previews your pages as they’ll appear on mobile phones and other portable devices. If there’s a feature that you want to add to your site that you can’t find on the menu, you can probably add it through the massive library of freeware extensions that users have contributed to Dreamweaver’s online resource. Expression Web gets many basic jobs done much more elegantly, so it keeps our Editors’ Choice—by a nose. But Dreamweaver is much improved, and it’s the only Web editor that does everything. You may find that for some tasks, Dreamweaver is the only way to go.

New Features Of The New Adobe Photoshop CS3 Extended Edition:

Nondestructive editing
Edit nondestructively with new Smart Filters, which let you visualize different image effects, and Smart Objects, which let you scale, rotate, and warp raster and vector graphics all without altering the original pixel data.

Rich painting and drawing toolset
Create or modify images with a wide assortment of professional, fully customizable paint settings, artistic brushes, and drawing tools.

Advanced compositing
Create more accurate composites by automatically aligning multiple Adobe® Photoshop® layers or images based on similar content. The Auto-align Layers command quickly analyzes details and moves, rotates, or warps layers to align them perfectly, and the Auto-blend Layers command blends the color and shading to create a smooth, editable result.

3D compositing and texture editing
Easily render and incorporate rich 3D content into your 2D composites — even edit existing textures on 3D models directly within Photoshop Extended and immediately see the results.
Over the weekend, the news broke that Microsoft is licensing the Flash Lite 3 player and Reader LE f

Over the weekend, the news broke that Microsoft is licensing the Flash Lite 3 player and Reader LE for Windows Mobile. I’m not a Flash Lite expert, but I’m suddenly curious. I’m sure that there are many of you out there like me that have never built anything for Flash Lite but are suddenly interested now that the potential audience just increased by millions of devices!

.

.

.

So, I’ve put together some good links as starting points for those of you new to Flash Lite:

Flash Lite Product Page

Flash Lite and Flash Player version comparison Page

Flash Lite and Flash Player full feature comparison Document (PDF)

Mobile and Devices Developer Center

Getting Started Guide to Creating Mobile content with Flash Lite

Getting Started Whitepaper on Flash Lite (PDF)

Mobile and Devices Home Page

Adobe Tools for building Mobile Apps

Online video tutorials for building mobile applications

Various Flash Lite Tutorials and Articles from Biskero.org

By the way, you don’t have to wait on Microsoft to release a new version of Windows Mobile to play around with in a browser. There are already two great browsers for Windows Mobile that already support Flash Lite today:

Skyfire – now starting a 2nd round of beta testing – sign up!

Opera Mobile

I’m seeing more and more interest in using Mobile devices for enterprise connected applications so I’ll be tracking this.

“Hulu offers U.S. consumers a vast selection of premium video content, on demand, free and ad-supported: full episodes of TV shows, both current and classic, full-length movies, thousands of clips, and much more.”

Hulu offers full episodes and clips from current primetime shows –for example, Family Guy, 30 Rock, The Office, House, The Simpsons, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, and Friday Night Lights – as well as a massive selection of TV classics, from Arrested Development and Firefly to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Miami Vice, Roswell and many more. Our movie library will include full-length movies from The Usual Suspects, Ice Age, and Point Break to Some Like It Hot, In Her Shoes, and Me, Myself and Irene, as well as hundred of clips from classic movies such as Aliens, Die Hard, Little Miss Sunshine, Napoleon Dynamite, and Vertigo.

</QUOTE>

.

.

I have been in their beta program for the past 2 months and enjoy the service, especially when I travel. The video quality is fantastic (thank in part to Flash 9 and H.264 of course!). The service is free so the programs have commercials, but they are all brief so they don’t get too irritating. The resolution is great and even includes some HD content at 1280×720.

By the way, Hulu has recently signed deals with the NBA and NHL

So, quit working and go watch Family Guy at http://www.hulu.com !
