Whilst writing up something more substantial, I thought I would put up a short anecdote about bullfighters in their time off before a fight. After a fight is predictably alcoholic, but before a fight simply cannot be. So, ‘matador’ being Spanish for killer, it should come as no surprise that shooting is a favourite pasttime.

First, a few words of introduction: at the end of September I had The Times journalist Giles Coren come and travel with me round Andalucia for a few days attending various bullfight-related places and events. The two high points were sitting ringside at the Seville bullring, the Maestranza, in the seats given us by one of the Maestrantes, Don Enrique Moreno de la Cova (who breeds the ancient race of fighting bulls, the Saltillos – see the post about them here) and going to the ranch of Don María José Barral where I got into the ring alongside the matador Juan José Padilla and the aficionado-pratico Adolfo Suárez Illana (events I shall leave to Giles to comment on for now).

Adolfo was then staying with Padilla to train for his own re-entry into the ring. The eldest son of the co-founder of democratic Spain (alongside the King, who is pictured right with Suárez senior), Adolfo kills bulls publicly at the same level as a professional matador, although with far less frequency: something like once a year for ten years. However, last year Adolfo had a year off and contemplated retirement at the venerable taurine age of 45 (from the ring, not from his law practice, journalism, poetry or political life). 

So, I accepted an invitation to join Adolfo’s cuadrilla (team) for the fight that Tuesday in Castellón. However, when the fight was delayed by rain, Adolfo, the team (minus Padilla who was hospitalised after a bad goring in Granada the day before) and I retreated to the house of Adolfo’s father-in-law, the bull-breeder Samuel Flores. Flores’ estates are so great that it is said you can walk from Albacete to Seville without leaving his land, some 300 miles as the crow flies, and the 8,000 acre ranch of ‘El Palomar’ is the most beautiful of it all.

Behind the gates, the two mile driveway meanders through the estate, wending through green pastures spotted with solitary trees and little woody islands of shade. The ground is stony, the stones condensing into boulders as the land rises into great craggy hills all around. It is a fertile but hard and striking landscape, filled with herds of fighting cattle and horses, the latter clustering around the great lake.   

It is also packed with deer - their rutting calls cracking the night’s stillness – along with Iberian ibex, partridge and a variety of other wildlife. For this reason, as well as breeding horses and bulls, it plays host to a great deal of shooting and stalking. It is here that Adolfo, Samuel Flores and the King of Spain have taken it in turns to shoot the three largest deer in the history of Spain.

Meat-eaters amongst the readers should have no trouble with the swift death of cloven-hoofed ruminants - be it a sheep, cow, deer or antelope – unless it is endangered. That said, there are certain animals which I would regard it wrong to shoot for any reason short of conserving their species or another of similar rank* (see note) or a human being.   

That said, hunting of animals is often deeply misunderstood by urban meat-eaters, but this anecdotal blog post is not the place to argue it. I will confine myself to remarking on the vital role that such hunting plays in conservation. In 2008 the International Union for Conservation of Nature, the United Nations-founded body which determines the endangered status of species, adjusted its evaluation of a species also found on this ranch – the ibex - from “near threatened” to “least concern” with the statement:   

“This species is now abundant and its range and population are currently expanding as a result of habitat changes resulting from rural abandonment. Consequently it is assessed as Least Concern. Hunting reservations and protected areas have played a crucial role in species recovery.” (My empahsis, taken from the IUCN website here)

Now, we were actually here to keep Adolfo in shape and undistracted for his forthcoming contest, spending time training with capes (toreo de salon) and sometimes with small bulls which left the ring unharmed (actually, vaquillas, the females, as the males cannot have seen a man on the ground until they enter the official ring).

However, on the second day, infected with the restless boredom of anticipation, Adolfo decided that we should take some time out and asked his team: the banderillero José Antonio Galdón, ‘El Niño de Belén’ and the young matador, Paúl Abdía, ‘Serranito’ whether they might like to help reduce the pigeon population that plagues the ranch; a chance to play with guns at which they jumped. This is from my notes on the day:   

Speaking in English so Belén and Serranito wouldn’t understand, Adolfo said we should go and pick out some guns. I felt a little anxious knowing that Adolfo was regarded as one of the best shots in Spain. Equally, when Adolfo had asked the other two if they knew how to shoot, their blasé manner had me convinced I was facing the judgement of an entire team of experts. I have shot since I was young (see my regretful experience of shooting my first pigeon described here), but no more than a few times a year at most (although I did become House Captain of Shooting at School, but with rifles).

However, I soon discovered that, as in so many things, bullfighters fear of being outdone can leading to a ‘bending’ of the truth, even when counter-proof is imminent. As Adolfo unlocked the gun cabinet - Holland & Holland English ‘Best’ Guns naturally - he explained,   

“Serranito has probably shot once before and hopefully knows how to handle a gun without killing anyone, but watch Belén closely. In fact, you carry the ammunition, I don’t trust them. Also, help me pick out two guns – I don’t want more than that out there. I’ll only take a couple of shots myself as I don’t want to damage my shoulder before the fight.”   

I duly picked out one with a long stock for myself – at six foot I stand a little taller than most of my friends in Spain – and a shorter one for the others. We rejoined them and handed over a shotgun to Serranito and it became rapidly clear that Adolfo’s estimate was correct.

In a moving, ‘rough’ shoot like this it is traditional to walk in a line to reduce the risk of shooting each other, but as I watched the loaded barrels of Serranito’s gun swing past my body for the umpteenth time with his finger resting on the trigger, safety catch set to ‘off’, I broke with convention and told him to walk in front of me. I could rely on myself to avoid blowing his head off, but my confidence definitely didn’t go both ways.   

As we walked along an extended set of farm buildings, we  fired a few pointless rounds at birds passing high overhead, sending pigeon flocks circling. Then, as we neared a head-high wall, another flock lifted off from one of the fighting bull holding-pens and Serranito and I both fired, felling a bird each. Despite the lack of training, a killers eye and reflexes and training served him well. He then handed his gun over to Belén.   

Belén, it should be added here, is one of the finest ‘bullfighters of the silver’, having been denied the matador’s gold when a bull removed his right eye with its horn early in his career. He is also a blunt, honest, cautic, loyal, rustic and hard-drinking individual who is both excellent company and an extremely brave man. However, he is also competitive, proud, with no sense of danger and has to shoot left-handed against his natural inclination.

It was then hilarious to watch Belén peppering the clouds with huge quantities of shot in record time. Double-barrelled shotguns of this type, with barrels side-by-side, have two triggers. Belén, true to form, pulled both at once to increase his chances of a hit. However, zero doubled is still zero. The massive explosions echoed off the hills disturbing wild and human life for miles around and occasionally one or other of us would have to duck to avoid suffering a fate the pigeons were completely safe from.

Spying a likely place, and for my own safety, I left Belén blasting the heavens and wandered off to another set of buildings to bag my second bird of the day. On hearing a change in the shooting tone – from dynamiter to sniper – I returned to find Adolfo handing the gun to Serranito, having briefly taken it from Belén to reduce the risk to bystanders and to fire a few shots himself. At his feet lay three pigeons.

As we ran out of ammunition no more birds were circling and I gave the last of the shells to Belén so he would have chance to salvage his immense pride. Despite the fact that there were half a dozen pigeons now roosting in the trees beside the house on our return – “sitting ducks”, as they say – he still couldn’t hit a damned thing, sending wood chips – but no feathers – flying as he vented his rage on the tall pine trees. Adolfo even suggested throwing one of the dead birds in the air to increase his chances, and Belén scowled at him through his one good eye. I withheld my laughter as even the young, quiet and immaculately polite Serranito joined in ribbing Belén.

And that is how bullfighters unwind when they can’t drink… below is a photo from the fight Adolfo fought two days later, which I am writing up now. Maybe 45 is not so old…

(*Note: By ‘rank’ with reference to animals, I mean where they stand on a modernised version of Aristotle’s scala naturae – the so-called Great Chain of Being - which starts with man, goes down through apes, dolphins, whales, elephants, monkeys, dogs and cats, horses, the ruminants, rodents, and so on into birds [the crow and parrot families are actually higher], reptiles, amphibians, insects, plants etc. The ranking here is something I have spent years trying to approximately work out, and have a lifetime ahead of me doing so with more precision. The principle is simple, though. A complex mental life should not be extinguished lightly. For example, elephants recognise themselves in mirrors, bury their dead and grieve, so we should take ending that awareness – and causing that emotional pain in their herd - very, very seriously. This is a medieval notion, rewritten in the light of empirical observation, and shorn of any religious connotations.)

Uno de los grandes inventos del hombre -y de la mujer-, sin lugar a dudas, es la masturbación. El telégrafo, la rueda, la luz eléctrica, los trajes de buzo, les lentes de aumento, el autogiro, las hombreras, los discos de vinilo, Youtube, el telescopio, las naves espaciales, el radio, la vacuna contra la gripe… también son inventos que tienen su importancia y su lugar en la Historia de la Humanidad. Pero reconozcámoslo, no tanto como la autosatisfacción sexual que supone la masturbación. Porque si un joven pasa un fin de semana solo en casa no va a pensar en construir una nave espacial o en investigar sobre cómo fue el proceso del descubrimiento del radio. Si está solo aprovechará que sus antepasados inventaron la masturbación.

El invento estuvo bien, pero el punto de vista empresarial no se tuvo en cuenta. ¿Dónde está la patente de la masturbación? ¿Y el copyright? Por fortuna cada vez que una persona en el mundo tiene tiempo para masturbarse en privado (y algunos incluso lo hacen en público) no viene ningún señor de la SGAE y le pone una denuncia por infringir los derechos de propiedad intelectual. Lo que le faltaba a la SGAE, denuncia a los que se la pelan en privado. Eso sí, se la pelan sin utilizar ni navaja ni cuchillo, por Dios, de lo que se trata es de disfrutar del sexo con uno mismo, no de castigarse como si fuese un ultrarreligioso con un cilicio bien apretado en el muslo debajo de la sotana. Nada más lejos de la realidad; los genitales, tanto masculinos como femeninos, son uno de los bienes más preciados que tenemos, y nuestra obligación está en cuidarlos al máximo. Pasa lo mismo que con el medio ambiente: si tenemos que ser ecologistas con la naturaleza e intentar contaminar lo menos posible, también tenemos que ser ecologistas con nuestros propios cuerpos e intentar mantener los objetos cortantes bien alejados de nuestros genitales.

Sí, sí, parece una perogrullada decir que el placer normalmente no va unido al derramamiento de sangre como consecuencia de un mal corte. Pero es necesario, debido a la obligación de ofrecer un servicio público y de guía para los ciudadanos que pesa para quien escribe estas líneas, avisar antes de que ocurra alguna desgracia. Extremadura no se merece tener adolescentes autocastrados porque no saben masturbarse. Y como si se les comenta que en los talleres sobre sexualidad y afectividad que una de las enseñanzas -éstas sí que son enseñanzas y no las que se impartían con el brazo en alto- es cómo pelársela más de uno se puede equivocar y cogerle la navaja al abuelo (porque en Extremadura no habrá Premios Nobel, pero abuelos con navajas sí los hay) para las clases prácticas de los talleres… Porque ya que el gobierno autonómico extremo se va a gastar 14.000 € en unos talleres sobre afectividad y sexualidad, dirigidos a jóvenes y mayores, es de suponer que los talleres serán teórico-prácticos. ¿O eso es mucho pedir? Ya que Extremadura se vuelve guarra sexualmente hablando y pone en pie de guerra al PP, que se haga bien. ¿O no? Con unos talleres teórico-prácticos seguro que la Iglesia monta una manifestación; y las asociaciones en defensa de la familia también. Pero un momento, las clases teórico-prácticas para los mayorcitos, no empezamos a hablar de la parte práctica con los menores de edad porque más de uno puede pensar lo que no debe.

Porque la repercusión política que ha tenido en Extremadura el anuncio del gasto de 14.000 € en estos talleres ha sido mayor que si la misma cantidad de dinero se fuese a destinar a privatizar la Sanidad Pública (algo impensable en cualquiera de las Comunidades Autónomas gobernadas por el PP, la de Madrid incluida). Eso sí, en los talleres no sólo van a enseñar a los jóvenes extremeños a masturbarse, sino que habrá más actividades y charlas que les acerquen a la sexualidad, un tema que debe tratarse sin tabúes. A nadie se le van a caer las manos o se va a quedar ciego por masturbarse, no vengamos con estos cuentos de terror a los adolescentes porque son una soberana estupidez andarnos con remilgos. La educación sexual es necesaria para que los menores de edad, a partir de una edad apropiada, sepan lo que es el sexo. Porque el sexo no es pecaminoso, cojones. Sin el sexo el ser humano no se hubiese reproducido ni salvado la especie. Sin el sexo nos hubiésemos extinguido antes incluso de ser seres humanos (esto para los que no se crean la mentira de la Creación Divina). Otra cosa es que algunas personas realicen prácticas sexuales poco aconsejables para los estómagos finos con residuos corporales poco agradables; eso es otra cosa que no se va a discutir aquí. Pero el sexo no es nada malo y no que hay tratar de esconderlo a los menores de edad. Eso no es lo más apropiado, es un error muy grave.

Hay muchas personas que pueden pensar que la educación sexual que reciben los menores de edad (si es que la llegan a recibir) debe proceder de los padres, que para eso son sus padres. Muy bien, no hay nada en contra; pero la educación obligatoria también puede colaborar con los padres, con su consentimiento, en educar sexual y afectivamente a los menores de edad. Sea cual sea el Partido Político que promueva la educación sexual en los colegios e institutos. Porque vamos a dejar las cosas claras: los talleres son una buena ayuda, no van a ser centros de violaciones y abusos sexuales a menores, que para eso ya está parte de la Iglesia Católica, que lo hace muy bien y lo esconde mucho mejor. Que el Estado se meta en asuntos privados de las personas sin el consentimiento de los ciudadanos no puede ser, hay que estar en contra de este tipo de intromisiones. Pero si los talleres educativos se hacen con el consentimiento de los padres, ¿qué problema hay? Salvo para los padres conservadores que no quieren que por nada del mundo unos socialistas corruptos y pervertidos se acerquen a sus hijos; sus niños están mucho mejor yendo a misa todos los domingos sentándose en las rodillas de un cura.

Pero mucho ojo también con otro asunto muy peliagudo de los talleres sobre afectividad y sexualidad que ha promovido la Junta de Extremadura y que también va a llevar a cabo la Junta de Andalucía, tal y como ha declarado la consejera andaluza de Igualdad, Micaela Navarro. Ya no estamos hablando únicamente de que a los socialistas se les haya ocurrido corromper la ingenuidad y la bondad de los niños enseñándoles que tienen genitales (los niños, no es que los socialistas se vayan a bajar los pantalones en los talleres y les digan a los menores de edad que miren bien sus genitales de personas mayores para después pedir a los menores que se desnuden ellos también para ver las diferencias), corrompiendo una educación moral férreamente instalada en no decir ni una palabra de sexo a los niños y en lugar de decirles que los nacimientos de los niños se deben a hacer el amor entre un hombre y una mujer, les dicen que es una cigüeña que viene de París (con lo cual todos somos inmigrantes) o de que papá le pone una semillita a mamá, igual que el niño pone una semilla de garbanzo en un vaso humedecido con agua y con algodón dentro. Estamos hablando de que los promotores de estos talleres son incluso unos rojos peligrosos para la unidad de España cimentada en el pasado más glorioso y reciente que haya conocido el país de la piel de toro. No es una referencia a la selección española de fútbol y su victoria en la última Eurocopa; no es una referencia a la selección española de baloncesto y a su victoria en el último Eurobasket de Polonia 09′. Estamos hablando del pasado glorioso político de España. ¿Con la aprobación del Tratado de Maastricht y su adhesión a la UE? No. ¿Con la victoria de José María Aznar en las Elecciones Generales del año 1996 y del año 2000? No. ¿Con la legalización el jueves santo del año 1977 del Partido Comunista en una decisión tomada unilateralmente por Adolfo Suárez y que hizo que los militares montaran en cólera mejor de lo que montan a caballo o a sus mujeres porque para eso son machos ibéricos con los cojones suficientes como para alistarse en el Ejército? No.

El pasado glorioso es el de la dictadura de Francisco Franco. La gran doble F de España (y no es la doble F de fútbol y follar). ¿Pero qué tienen que ver los talleres de afectividad y sexualidad, en los que se incluyen enseñanzas de masturbación a los jóvenes extremos? Pues muchas cosas: en primer lugar con Franco y con la educación eclesiástica la masturbación estaba absolutamente prohibida; eso sí, más de uno se la pelaría igualmente pasándose por el forro de los cojones las enseñanzas y prohibiciones de la Iglesia. Y en segundo lugar, sin profundizar demasiado en la educación infantil durante el franquismo, porque es una indecencia que se programe para el día 20 de noviembre, el próximo viernes, un taller de masturbación en Navalmoral de la Mata. ¿Porque Navalmoral de la Mata es un municipio que no se merece que se manche su nombre? Hombre, con la masturbación se puede llegar a manchar si se hace bien hecha, pero eso no es lo peor. A fin de cuentas en Navalmoral de la Mata la gente se masturba y no se masturba igual que en el resto de los pueblos y ciudades de España, en mayor o menor cantidad dependiendo de la diferencia proporcional en cuanto a los habitantes que vivan en Navalmoral de la Mata y en el resto de pueblos y ciudades de España. El taller de masturbación del día 20 de noviembre es indecente porque en lugar de tener a todos los niños llorando por la muerte del Caudillo (incluso a mayorcitos, como dice Laura Garrido, la presidente del Consejo de la Juventud de Extremadura que ayer tuvo que dar explicaciones en Mérida por el revuelo que se ha montado con estos talleres) se les va a tener educándolos sobre cómo masturbarse. Por Dios santo, no es que España se rompa, es que España va a ser olvidada por las multitudes de personas que van a estar masturbándose en lugar de colaborando por el futuro unido de la nación: ¡e incluso habrá algunos que aprovechen el 20-N para echar un polvo!

No, no… es mucho mejor pensar que no habrá tales desalmados poblando los pueblos y ciudades de este gran país que está cristianamente en contra de la masturbación. Aquí el único contacto sexual debe llegar con tu señora esposa o con tu señor esposo (si se es hombre o mujer en los respectivos casos, pero nunca hay que pensar en que dos hombres o dos mujeres tengan algún tipo de contacto sexual entre ellos, la homosexualidad es pecado, enfermedad y muchas cosas más, todas ellas muy malas y muy poco cristianas) es una vez que se han casado. Que el hombre como sea de enseñar el pajarito a las primeras de cambio debe tener aquello como una manguera que no deja salir el agua desde hace dos años y medio. Una vez que se le ha dado al agua para que salga, obviamente, porque si encima se tiene la llave del agua cerrada es una gilipollez hacer el símil. Bastante tenemos con unos socialistas ateos, con unos rojos revolucionarios a los que les importa una mierda que España sea una grande y libre, y que están más pendientes de gastar dinero público en enseñar a los menores extremos a cómo masturbarse que de sacar este país adelante. Qué poca vergüenza, decirles a los niños la palabra masturbación, y encima crear unos talleres para decirles qué es eso. ¿Qué pretenden los socialistas? ¿Que los niños extremeños sepan que existe la masturbación?

Qué poca vergüenza; se atreven a crear talleres de masturbación dentro de unos talleres sobre sexualidad y afectividad en Extremadura, y encima planifican unas actividades para el 20-N. Lo que faltaba: España se rompe y para un día que hay para celebrar que hubo un héroe que luchó por la unidad patria, los socialistas extremeños van y celebran tan ilustre fecha con un taller sobre masturbación en Navalmoral de la Mata.

Qué poco respeto al Caudillo…

There seems to be an awul lot of chatter in the press at the moment about my old secondary school. Even Britain’s best-selling broadsheet newspaper, the Daily Telegraph felt it couldn’t help bringing it up when they mentioned my book a few weeks ago:

Eton gets bullish

Is there any arena left in which Old Etonians are not excelling? After the Tory leadership and the London mayoralty, the school is now making its mark in the bull ring.

Alexander Fiske-Harrison, a 33-year-old actor, says he has been signed up by Profile to write a book, Into the Arena, about his exploits as an aspiring toreador.

“I’ve been learning to cape bulls with Adolfo Suárez Illana, the son of Spain’s first post-Franco prime minister,” he says.

His book is described by the publisher as “an involving exploration of a controversial subject”.

Peter Carson, the acquiring editor, adds: “Bullfighting is one of those subjects that attracts excellent writers: from Kenneth Tynan and Ernest Hemingway to A L Kennedy.”

The Tory leader and London mayor to whom they refer are David Cameron and Boris Johnson. In fact, the Telegraph once asked me for a piece on the man who will most likely be the next Prime Minister of the United Kingdom because not only did I go to the same house at Eton as Cameron – though ten years later – but like him I was caught smoking marijuana at school, which counted as news for a while (they never ran the story).

Eton was a generally excellent school from where I still have very good friends who are all doing well in the most amazingly diverse fields. This diversity and especially the success explains the press interest. To list just two statistics: the school has had eighteen British Prime Ministers and thirty-seven holders of the Victoria Cross. The downsides are snobbery, arrogance and the absence of girls in an environment of over 1,250 boys locked together during puberty (which is about as psychologically uinhealthy and unnatural as you can get).

At the moment, one can find not only Cameron and Johnson in the press, but also the shady dealings of Simon Mann in Equatorial Guinea, a man who went not only to Eton byt also served in the SAS and before becoming a mercenary. However, it is another, very different sort of Old Etonian, and former SAS Officer, in today’s Telegraph: Sir Ranulph Fiennes, Britain’s greatest living explorer. It turns out that he was terribly bullied when he was at school and was also constantly in trouble with the school authorities. The piece ended with the words:

Sir Ranulph, who said that the deprivations he had to endure on his polar expeditions paled into insignificance beside his experiences as a schoolboy, has hinted that, 60 years on, he remains keen to take his revenge upon his tormentors. “There’s still a chance,” he said. “I know who they are.”

(One of those awaiting the wrath of Fiennes is the former Cabinet Minister Jonathan Aitken.)

Like Fiennes, the necessarily authoritarian nature of a boarding school grated on me terribly: many boys at Eton go the whole five years without being sent to the headmaster once. I was the first boy sent in my year and managed a further 67 times in my career – a record.

I was relentlessly bullied in my first year by Dan Macmillan (great-grandson of the Prime Minister) in the year above me and his friend Oliver Keane in the year above that. I could tolerate the violence and verbal abuse, but it was when two other boys in the very top year flushed my head down a toilet that I broke and mentioned it to my parents. Like Fiennes’ parents, they telephoned the school and something like a dozen people in my house ended up being sent to the headmaster for a variety of offenses as an entire ring of abuse was uncovered. The amazing thing was how guilty I felt for giving the names of the perpetrators, despite the fact in some cases we were talking about six-foot eighteen-year olds picking on me, then a boy of thirteen. However, learning loyalty is never a bad thing. Learning to question its justification is, of course, even better.

One really can over do the self-pity about these things. There were occurrences, which increased over time, where I learned to stand up to people considerably larger than myself, something which would never have happened in a more pacified environment. My physical courage, such as it is, was in someways formed by being bullied, and I wonder if Fiennes might not begrugingly agree. What is more, Macmillan and I became friends in our final years, as did Keane and I, to the extent that when our housemaster walked in on us smoking cigarettes in Keane’s room in his final year, he claimed it was he alone smoking, saving me from possible expulsion.

Life is never clear cut…

From its first day, the October Revolution was a reference point for the international and internationalist labor movement as well as the socialist organizations that hadn’t surrendered in the face of the militarism and longings for conquest demonstrated by the powerful of the earth. It was also a celebrated reference point. The acts that were organized in homage to that glorious date, November 7th, are still remembered by many revolutionary fighters. Since the disintegration of the USSR, since the savage capitalist counterrevolution’s victory in the land of Gorky and Mayakovsky, even here, at this red website, forgetfulness lives, an unjust and suicidal forgetfulness. To remember this date, to speak about the meaning of that socialist revolution, we conversed with Spanish writer, scientist, translator and militant Manuel Talens.

López Arnal: Not long ago you reminded me that your first novel, La parábola de Carmen la Reina, concluded with the following words:

[In Artefa, a small village on Granada’s Alpujarras, the trumpets of Apocalypse start to sound]… “María Espinosa was in the yard, tossing bird seed to the hens; she had dreamt that José Botines whispered his love to her with caressing words by candlelight, and she woke up with such high spirits that she forgot to open the window to air out the room, not realizing that the sky was covered by leaden clouds which had slowly arrived during the night; but she lifted her gaze when the snow began to dampen her silver hair, and then she saw the flash of lightning falling down on the cross of the steeple; she set off by the left side of her house for the village plaza; her eardrums exploding from the trumpet blasts; it smelled of burnt gunpowder and the flames were sparking through the church’s windows; she was already two steps from death but the thunder sounded to her ears like the beginning of a new hope; it was November 7th, 1917, and at that very same moment the liberating hordes jumped over the barricades to the sound of the seventh and last trumpet, and advanced victoriously through the opaque fog of the cannons to storm the Winter Palace.”

Now, almost one hundred years later, let me ask you precisely about that November 7th. You spoke here of a new hope, of liberating hordes. What happened on that November 7th, 1917? Why do you believe that it represented a new hope for the working class of the entire world?

Manuel Talens: Since your question mixes fiction with reality, and that is something very dear to me as a storyteller, let me first add some context to that extemporaneous quote from my novel, in order for the reader to understand what it is about. La parábola de Carmen la Reina takes place in the mountainous region of Granada’s Alpujarras, a spot in Andalucía where my mother’s family comes from, and it is about class struggle in an imaginary village, Artefa, throughout the entire 19th Century and the beginning of the 20th. The meticulous coincidence of dates between the apocalyptic outcome of events in Artefa and the assault on the Winter Palace — which gave birth to the USSR — was not casual, but a rhetorical trick I used to pay homage to that fundamental historical event that was the October Revolution.

As for the date of November 7th, let me clarify that czarist Russia was guided by the old Julian calendar, which is different from the Gregorian used everywhere today. According to the pre-revolutionary calendar, the Soviets’ victory took place on October 25th, which is November 7th by the Gregorian calendar. This is the origin of the apparent contradiction of an October Revolution which is celebrated in November.

I will add that even though the newly born Soviet Union immediately adopted the Gregorian calendar, it continued to refer to its revolution as the October Revolution. Later, the unforgettable Eisenstein movie set the confusion in stone. The world today is so globalized and uniform that these discrepancies seem illogical, but in those times, not so very distant from today, contrast — not similarity between countries and cultures — was the norm. Having said that, let’s return to your question.

Plenty has been written about both November 7th, 1917 and its historical importance, and the thoughts I could now add in this interview are only the insignificant personal opinion — I’m not trying to convince anyone — of someone who always looked at those facts in a positive way. I apologize beforehand if my comments do not rise to the occasion.

The Russian Revolution was the second in history, but the first won by the proletariat, because the French Revolution was bourgeois in character and didn’t touch capitalist private property as the means of production. On the other hand, the Russian Revolution was the tangible proof needed by the earth’s damned, to be sure that Marx’s dream was not an illusion. How could it not represent the beginning of a new hope? This time, exploitative capitalism was replaced by communism, a beautiful concept in spite of all the disinformation it has suffered for more than an entire century, and it meant equality of enjoyment of earthly goods.

The fact that such a building collapsed seven decades later doesn’t make its construction less sublime. At the most it confirms for us that dreams, once fulfilled, need daily care and tenderness for a lifetime so that they are not extinguished.

LA: So communism, that beautiful concept according to your words, would mean “equality of enjoyment of earthly goods.”

MT: Of course, this is a basic concept of historical materialism, a natural consequence of both classless society and public ownership of the means of production. Paradise — if it exists — is here on earth and it shouldn’t be restricted only to some people, but enjoyed by all. It’s called sharing, which is alien to the nature of capitalism. The evangelical message of Christianity is exactly the same as that of communism, although it wanders away into magical thinking in order to daydream about a hypothetical egalitarian enjoyment once life has ended.

LA: You have referred to a movie by Eisenstein. Which one?

MT: To October, a marvelous silent film dedicated to the Petrograd proletarians. Eisenstein filmed it in 1927 to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the Revolution. Many of the veterans who had participated in the real struggle played themselves in the movie and this adds to its historical appeal, apart from the mastery that Eisenstein — an extraordinary film director — demonstrated in it. It is freely available through the internet, although these days fewer and fewer people appreciate cinematic language in its pure state, without any dialogue.

LA: Unfriendly views of the Russian Revolution have suggested that in fact it was merely a sudden attack by the Bolsheviks. What do you think about this opinion?

MT: Here we fully enter the land of propaganda, whose objective is disinformation. It is well known that any revolutionary undertaking has, clinging to it like a barnacle, the rewriting of its history by its enemies. We have very contemporary examples: Cuba has been enduring slander for fifty years now. As for Venezuela, not a single day passes without Western private mainstream media stating that anything Hugo Chávez’s government does is bad. We have to learn how to live with such a hindrance that today seems insoluble.

The suggestion of a sudden attack by the Bolsheviks doesn’t stand up to the slightest analysis; it is an insult to intelligence based upon the semantic falsehood that revolution is a messy and disorderly state, without any preconceived combat tactics, that ends up suffocating legal order as a step before chaos. With such a misleading premise it’s easy to make the sophist’s deduction that the assault on the Winter Palace — the last revolutionary skirmish, a prodigy of military tactics — was a sudden attack by several hundred intrepid Bolsheviks, who ended up fishing in a jumbled river.

This reductive thesis deliberately forgets ad infinitum the whole revolutionary process leading to the final assault, which had previously forced both the abdication of Czar Nicholas II in March and the formation of a weak provisional government of capitalist bourgeoisie. It leaves aside the fact that Petrograd (Saint Petersburg) was already under Soviet control and — above all — it ignores Lenin’s intelligence as a thinking leader when it came time to move the pieces on that chess board.

It is as if someone were to try to forget both Fidel Castro and the guerrilla warfare he designed from the Sierra Maestra, to focus instead on the battle at Santa Clara — another prodigy of military tactics — that gave the final victory to the Cuban Revolution. Who in his/her right mind would say that the latter was just a sudden attack by Che Guevara? It’s absurd, pure trickery.

LA: You just have referred to Lenin’s intelligence. Do you believe it to be an expression of his brilliant mind? Of his audacity? Of his courage? Of his unusual political analyses? Of his heterodoxy? Was there a different Lenin before and after the Revolution?

MT: Generally speaking, the greatest political leaders who have marked history, for good or ill — such as Alexander the Great, Julius Caesar, Genghis Khan, Hernán Cortés, or in the case we’re discussing, Lenin — are human beings with superior intelligence, practically indescribable courage and extraordinary strategic abilities.

Of course, this capacity is not a merit in itself; the merit comes when you put it to work exclusively for a noble and altruistic task as is the improvement of mankind. Lenin — and also Fidel, Ho Chi Minh or Nelson Mandela — belongs to that scarce gallery of extraordinary human beings. I believe I’ve answered the first five points of your question.

As for the last one, I think that unquestionably, there was a change from the leader who advocated revolutionary struggle to the statesman he became after seizing power. But that is normal, because the circumstances in both periods were radically different. One of the examples of this evolution was the changing role he assigned to the Party. From being at the beginning only an entity dedicated to popular education so that the masses could become the vanguard of the proletariat, it was transformed into the body in charge of power. It is a sad paradox that Stalin took advantage of this singularity to legitimate his crimes.

LA: What was the attitude of the big powers of the day — England, France, also the US — before those new events? Did they allow the USSR to breathe free?

MT: As expected, those countries showed total hostility. The switch from capitalism to socialism is not something that can remain unpunished by concerted nations, because it supposes the loss of a market and, at the same time, opens the possibility for other people to catch the virus of revolution. England, France, the US and also Japan, Canada, Czechoslovakia and Germany, among other countries, hurried to finance an army of nationalist, Czarist, anticommunist and conservative mercenaries in the civil war that broke out in the USSR in 1918. These mercenaries — the so-called White Russians — were the worst of the worst from Russian society, very similar to the Cuban ultra right-wingers from Miami. But the Red Army smashed them and counterrevolution failed.

Curiously enough — or maybe not so much — such a hostile attitude from nations persists today: the slightest attempt by any country or continent to substitute the rules of the game for fairer ones always brings the same answer. Latin America has a long experience with this. What is happening now in Honduras is just the latest example of a long list of counterrevolutionary interventions arranged from abroad.

LA: Soon afterwards, in 1924, Lenin died. It has been said that he was depressed by the development of events, not only due to the difficulties of the process, but also to the attitudes of some of his comrades. Do you find it a reasonable conjecture?

MT: I personally find it silly, one more among the many fabrications that are there to deny a fact which is unacceptable for capitalism: that Lenin was incombustible, like Mandela, like Fidel, like most probably Chávez will be. When right-wingers can’t destroy a leader, they revile him/her. It has also been said that Lenin died from syphilis. Who cares if one dies from syphilis, from a stroke or after a hip fracture? Why it is so difficult to admit that Lenin died because his time had come? It is simply ridiculous to fabricate a late mental depression in somebody who had survived jail, deportations, exile and all kinds of ups and downs without deviating from his initial task.

Anyway, I’m not trying to suggest that Lenin was insensitive to suffering. Nobody is.

LA: Why do you believe that just a few years later the process took such an authoritarian character?

MT: That is the most painful part of the USSR, because it invites people to think of what could have been such a great internationalist motherland if Stalin had not been around, or if both the debilitation due to World War II and the arms race that swamped the country during the Cold War had not happened. It is like imagining a different destiny for Spain if Franco had never existed. The problem is that history doesn’t allow anybody to rectify errors.

The terrible truth is that Stalin was a cancer not only for the Soviet Union, but for the very idea of communism as a horizon. And the leaders who succeeded him, except for maybe Khruschev, were Stalin’s late metastases that ended up destroying Lenin’s legacy. But communism is not that. Luckily enough, for fifty years now Cuba has been showing the beautiful and compassionate face of communism.

LA: You have just mentioned Khruschev. How could it happen that Khruschev’s attempt at renewal, the self-criticism of Stalinism at the 20th Congress was not fruitful, or if it was, not for long?

MT: I’m no Kremlinologist at all, so I only can interpret what I sense. I believe that the 20th Congress arrived too late. If Stalinism had been short-lived everything could have been reversed, but no revolution can stand twenty-nine years of crimes, abuses and terror, even if simultaneously it produces things worthy of praise. I consider that Khruschev was not able to completely remove the cancer of Stalinism and, as a consequence, it relapsed.

A few years ago a friend in Moscow told me a beautiful anecdote about Khruschev that I later used in a short story. Please remind me to send you the passage.

[…] And that was how the following day she took me to Novodevichy cemetery. Its landscaped sidewalks were covered with snow. We wandered between tombstones and I couldn’t resist my old habit of delivering my monologues to her, this time on the important men and women who are buried there about whom I knew a thing or two. She listened to me with attention and her gaze was turning ironic. We arrived at Khruschev’s grave. Then Mei-Ling opened her mouth to tell me that the former USSR President is not buried at the Kremlin because he died while out of power. Then, for the first time since I knew her, she directed more than a hundred words in a row at me. I learned that Khruschev’s mausoleum is by Ernst Neizvestny, a sculptor Khruschev had ordered brought before him when he was the CPSU’s First Secretary, in order to violently berate him for producing art contrary to socialism’s ideals. And that the then young artist, instead of being frightened, shouted back to him that even if he was Comrade First Secretary he didn’t know anything about sculpture. Apparently, after he fell from power, Khruschev and the sculptor initiated a certain friendship, so much so, that in his last will and testament Khruschev stated that he wanted Neizvstny to sculpt the monument at his grave. On either side of the old leader’s realistic face there are two big abstract angular figures, one in white marble and the other in black. According to Mei-Ling they symbolize two ears.

“At the end of his life,” she added as a conclusion, “Khruschev had learned how to listen.” [...]

It is probable that the Soviet Union disintegrated because its leaders were autistic, they didn’t listen to anybody.

But I don’t want to give the impression that everything in the USSR’s trajectory is negative for me. It will always be remembered for the help it gave to the Spanish Republic during our Civil War, the Soviet people’s heroism during World War II (both things under Stalin’s command, all must be said) and its constant and unconditional support to Cuba until the last moment.

LA: Apart from this, during the Eighties there were several rectification attempts. First by Andropov, who was not by any means an idiot, and then by Gorbachev with his perestroika. What do you think of those attempts?

MT: None of the leaders who succeeded Khruschev were stupid, but I suppose that none of them believed as one needs to believe — with an unyielding conviction — in the survival and legacy of the Revolution. I don’t have the least sympathy for their memory.

The last one, Gorbachev, was a kind of Soviet Adolfo Suárez, suddenly catapulted by chance to an unexpected place: from being an austere servant of the apparatus he was, out of the blue, turned into a western-style frivolous democratic television figure. There is no doubt that he did what he could, he tried to open the window to let some fresh air in, but the USSR was already moribund. A cancer can’t be treated with half measures and Gorbachev had the unfortunate role of helplessly watching an agony that didn’t respond to any treatment.

There is a Jacques Brel song — “J’arrive” — that expresses the impotence Gorbachev should have felt as the situation was slipping out of his hands: C’est même pas toi qui es en avance, c’est déjà moi qui suis en retard. [It’s not even you who’s ahead, it’s me who’s behind.] And the unavoidable happened: one day Yeltsin — ambitious, a liar, thief, and treacherous drunk — showed up and delivered the coup de grace.

LA: You have already mentioned the Cold War. I’d like to go back to it. The Cold War was always very hot for the warmongering West, which wanted to drown the USSR from the first day. Didn’t it leave very little leeway for the USSR? Did the USSR have other possible paths to follow?

MT: In cases like that of the USSR, my grandmother used to say that “all of them killed her but she died alone.” There is no doubt that the Yankees had a lot to do with that harebrained arms competition and with the stupid space race that both the US and the USSR were fighting each other over, for decades.

I can understand Washington spending enormous sums of money (that it doesn’t have) on the conquest of space, because after all it is both a colonialist and invader empire and it cares very little about its high percentage of poor citizens without medical care. But what I don’t and won’t ever understand is that the USSR could accept the challenge of throwing down the pipe billions of rubles on sputniks, space trips and other whatchamacallits, while its citizens were facing hardships in its republics. Any housewife knows about priorities and none of them would buy a Rolls Royce if her children didn’t have a glass of milk. The leaders from the Kremlin, I’m sorry to say it, opted for the Rolls Royce. Those delusions of grandeur drained resources that should have been used to improve the well-being of the Soviet people instead of being tossed away.

I don’t live in that exclusive world; what I say is only my opinion as a bystander: I ignore Moscow’s real leeway, and whether it was really necessary to engage in that arms race — a leap in the dark toward bankruptcy — instead of having just organized its defense from possible USAmerican attacks. But I think that imperial politics, even if they are imposed from abroad, should not have a place in a revolutionary State.

If we can only take the comparison so far, Cuba’s policy seems a lot more logical to me: it puts its scarce economic resources into manufacturing vaccines, training doctors and teachers and social workers which it then puts at the disposal of its fellow countries.

LA: The USSR disintegrated in 1991. According to you, what was the most decisive element in its collapse?

MT: To Washington’s relentless hounding, it is necessary to add Moscow’s own mistakes: the loss of ideals, the perpetuation of a Party’s bourgeoisie alienated from the daily reality of the Soviet people, the economic and moral ruin, the corruption embedded at all levels. It is our everyday bread, nothing that we don’t see in our Western two-party democracies. Spain is a good example of such a decadence.

The narrative voice of the novel of mine that you mentioned above, soon after the words that you have reproduced for this interview and just before the end, adds: “… there is no doubt that men were created to be briefly free while fighting battles and then they return to slavery after touching victory with their hands.” Who knows if that is our destiny: to try, to fail, to try again, to fail again and so forth, without ever accepting failure. I am an active pessimist, full of optimism.

LA: To try, to fail and to try again, you’re telling me. To fight battles known to be lost in advance, to go to war, to be defeated and to go to war again. Isn’t it a little absurd? Isn’t it literarily brilliant, but politically unviable? Isn’t it a philosophy of history not only pessimistic/optimistic but, shall we say, very romantic?

MT: I go back to Lenin: one step forward, two steps back. Pure praxis. The absurd thing would be to give up. There is nothing romantic in this way of thinking. Romanticism leaves me cold.

LA: Putting things in perspective from our current position and keeping in mind the ten or more years of wild capitalism in Russia after the fall of the Soviet Union, do you believe that November 7th was worth the effort? Do you believe that the earth’s liberating movements should continue looking at that date as a reference? In short, should we continue identifying ourselves with that revolution?

MT: Yes, it was worth the effort. The approach to evaluating historical facts should never be their success or their failure, but the goodness or wickedness of their essence. And the essence of that revolution that was fought to improve the well-being of earth’s damned — I like to quote The International — was good.

The wild capitalism in present-day Russia has created multimillionaires overnight. That is what we see in Western press headlines while the lower-case type on the inside pages shows us the other face, much more sinister: that from 1990 to 2008 Russian life expectancy — a figure that measures quality of life and summarizes mortality rate for all ages in both sexes — has fallen, from 69 to 65 years. Those 4 years of difference seem like very little, but they are the statistical expression of a human tragedy of enormous proportions.

Concerning whether we should continue identifying ourselves with the October Revolution, I don’t know what to tell you. Nostalgia displeases me, because the past was never better than the present. I prefer to coldly analyze historical facts to preserve their positive aspects, but without hiding the negative ones. As well, nowadays things are very different than in 1917 and, at least for now and under certain social circumstances, it is possible to use the electoral system of democracy as a lever to make revolution through the vote, without weapons. Of course it is much more complicated, because votes don’t allow for complete neutralization of the enemy, which remains hidden in the vicinity.

LA: Allow me to conclude with a non-nostalgic question. How do you see 21st Century socialism? Where is it more likely to be adopted?

Also to conclude, and before giving you my point of view about 21st Century socialism, let me tell you that I have very much enjoyed discussing Marxism and the October Revolution with you, two matters so unexpected and disregarded in current public discourse. And I also like that this conversation will be published, because nowadays it looks frankly heterodox, a real virtue amid so many flat ideological EEGs [smile]. You know very well that post-modernity has wrought havoc in both the traditional left-wing parties and the political thinking of contemporary societies, and the single fact of speaking of these things sounds to many people like science fiction. What can we do?!

Let me finish: I think of 21st Century socialism as speaking Spanish, although not in Spain, but in Latin America. That’s where mankind’s future rests, if such a thing still does exist. We won’t see its culmination, but it has already started. In fact, its seeds were officially planted on January 8th, 1959, when the bearded guerrillas entered Havana. Without Cuba and its obstinate resistance over five decades, 21st Century socialism would not be possible today. Now the only thing it needs is that at least one of the three Latin American giants — México, Brazil or Argentina — find and elect a Chávez, an Evo or a Correa to suit them, so that the locomotive will get up to speed and become unstoppable. It is a question of time. That day, if I end up witnessing it, will be a happy one for me.

La independencia es una posibilidad en esta generación o es una utopía para dentro de 25 años?
Estamos hablando de menos tiempo. En 25 años no lo conseguiremos.   Es una necesidad urgente de nuestro país. Para que salga adelante debe tener la independencia.

En el programa de Reagrupament.cat incluirán un capítulo económico?
Insistiremos mucho en la regeneración democrática: nos interesa más saber cuál es la empresa que en este país se lleva cada año más contratos de la administración.

¿Por qué debemos discutir sobre otras cosas si lo más básico de este país no está resuelto? No sabemos qué pasa con nuestros impuestos.

Esto implicaría más transparencia.
Transparencia absoluta.   Si un país no tiene una administración supertransparent pasan cosas extrañas.

En Cataluña hay más publicidad que en otras autonomías.
No tenemos el palco del Bernabeu, digamos, pero creo que tenemos el Palau de la Música y cosas de esas.

Piensan hacer un plan de negocios para una Catalunya independiente?
Hay estudios parciales de que supondría si no tuviéramos que hacer la aportación al Estado.   En todo caso lo que se ha evidenciado es que la no independencia sale muy cara. En una Catalunya independiente los empresarios se podrían ganarse mejor la vida.

¿Por qué?
Cada año nos roban 21.000 millones. Con ello, Cataluña haría mejores autopistas, mejores trenes, más ayuda a las empresas … Ahora estamos tratados como colonia y también tenemos la actitud del que es colonizado. No veo ningún motivo por el cual no es mejor la independencia.

En un Estado catalán habría que triplicar el número de funcionarios: embajadas, ejército …
Estaríamos obligados a tener gobiernos eficientes.   No podríamos tener presidentes del gobierno que no hablan. Ahora, como no pinta nada, no dice nada.

L l aburría defienden la independencia por un aspecto racional.
Sale a cuenta. Y, además, amamos nuestro país.

Están a favor o en contra del Impuesto de Sucesiones?
Estamos en contra de que nos expoliado, porque así seguro que nos podríamos cargar.

Madrid lo ha eliminado.
Pero Madrid no tiene expolio fiscal y Cataluña sí.

El AVE y la T1 de El Prat, quien los ha pagado?
Nos lo pagamos nosotros. La T1 es una decimotercera parte del expolio fiscal de un año.   Nos toman el dinero y el pelo, y encima les tenemos que dar las gracias.No nos han hecho ningún favor. Y de AVE podríamos tener 25. Estamos haciendo la casa por el tejado, nos están arruinando.

Los impuestos los pagamos las personas.
Sí, pero vuelven con inversiones en los territorios. Esto es una falacia de los socialistas progres españoles.

Que no haya Cuarto Cinturón no es culpa de Madrid.

Jordi Pujol no fue un buen gobernante?
No tenía muy poca visión de Estado catalán. Fue incapaz de pensar una administración más moderna, más eficiente, con más autoestima.

¿Cuánta gente podría votar sí a un referéndum sobre la independencia de Cataluña?
Esta pregunta no se ha hecho nunca y no ha contestado nunca.

Se han hecho encuestas. Y el 43% dice que se siente tan catalán como español.
Es que ahora es lo que Estás catalán y eres español te guste o no.

En las generales el PSOE es el partido más votado.
Sí, pero van a votar si ganará Rajoy o Zapatero. No van a votar la Cataluña independiente. No defendemos un referéndum con la legalidad española vigente, eso se pierde seguro, como se pierde en Quebec. Defendemos proclamó la independencia en el Parlamento. Después ya se ratificará.   Debemos cerrar el círculo vicioso de la ley española. Sin la independencia se pueden hacer cosas.  Montilla tiene herramientas. Miseria. Cataluña no tiene herramientas fiscales y políticas de verdad como tienen los estados. En el País Vasco sí pueden, en Cataluña no.

El País Vasco no es independiente.
No, pero el País Vasco, España y Navarra hicieron un pacto que respetan incluso en dictaduras. En Cataluña no.   Nos masacraron militarmente y lo sabemos.   No nos dejan hacer nada, somos un territorio vencido.

El concierto económico no sería suficiente?
¿Con quién lo haremos? Es una cosa de dos y los españoles, sean de derechas o de izquierdas, no lo harán nunca. Funcionan a base de expoliar los Países Catalanes.

También existe la opción del federalismo.
Esto es comedia. Ningún español no quiere un estado federal. Es un invento catalán para distraer al personal. Y con Cataluña nunca se hará un concierto económico.

Cambiará el panorama en las próximas elecciones?
Cambiará mucho.   Cataluña ha llegado a una situación como la que se dio con las elecciones que ganó Gaspart en el FC Barcelona, y las siguientes serán como las del post-nuñisme. Este país está como el Barça estaba entonces.   Este empate infinito, esta historia que parece que nunca se romperá. Nadie en este país, excepto los que viven de ello, no está ilusionado con nada de lo que pasa, y no puedes vivir constantemente así.

Independencia y democracia

Joan Carretero estuvo a punto de tomar el control de Esquerra a los líderes del partido en el congreso del verano de 2008, cuando su candidatura se situó en segundo lugar, por detrás de la que lideraba Joan Puigcercós pero por delante de la de Josep Lluís Carod Rovira.   Poco después decidió abandonar el partido y fundar Reagrupament.cat, una plataforma en la que le siguieron varios militantes.
Rechaza la decisión estratégica de ERC de estar al Gobierno catalán y reclamar la independencia y lanza un mensaje esencialista: “independencia y democracia”, una variación del de “independencia y socialismo”. Asegura que en el movimiento que lidera, que aspira a meterse en el Parlamento en las próximas autonómicas, caben todos los independentistas catalanes. En este universo podrían encajar desde una persona de izquierdas – “siempre que no sean comunistas, porque no son independentistas”, dice-como una persona de derechas.

En cuanto a Joan Laporta, presidente del Barça, y el economista Xavier Sala Martín, no esconde que estaría encantado de contar con ellos, aunque no ha hablado con ninguno de los dos.   Como la UCD de Adolfo Suárez, el ex consejero de Gobernación aspira a conseguir la independencia de Catalunya para luego disolver Reagrupamiento. Entonces, según él, será el momento de las ideologías.Este es ciertamente incompatible con un pacto de Gobierno ni con ERC ni con CiU.”Cuando se declarará Artur Mas independentista?   Cuando nosotros tengamos 70 diputados “, dice.

Hace unos días me encontré de casualidad con un rodaje realizado en el campo de fútbol que hay junto a mi antiguo instituto. Obviamente, ya que llevaba la cámara de fotos aproveché para captar un par de imágenes de una película que se estrenará dentro de unos meses y que contará la vida de Adolfo Suarez, así que aquí os las pongo.

Por cierto, anda que no se ruedan películas y series en Alcalá. Cada dos por tres me encuentro con los de Cuéntame y de vez en cuando con los sets de rodaje de cualquier otra película.

OPINIÓN

Para leer entre paréntesis, entre comillas, y siempre considerando los supuestos de mi imaginación, y con pequeño ejercicio visual para identificar colores.

Pocas superproducciones podrían ser tan taquilleras como las del género de “medios, políticos y banqueros”. Lástima que no se lleve nunca a la gran pantalla la corrupción de los medios, los políticos y los banqueros, y siempre se quede en un simple teatrillo televisivo en la pequeña pantalla y en folletines que son olvidados o celosamente guardados en las hemerotecas.

Mario Conde era entrevistado hoy por El Mundo, y decía, ni corto ni perezoso, que “volvería a hacer lo mismo que hizo con Banesto.”

P.- ¿No hace usted autocrítica? ¿No se arrepiente de lo que hizo?

R.- El arrepentimiento es un tema moral. He mirado 1.000 veces y volvería a hacer todo lo que hice en Banesto.

P.- Pero, ¡usted ha sido condenado por varios delitos!

R.- Sí, por apropiación indebida por haberle dado 600 millones a Antonio Navalón cuando los demás les daban 10.000 millones. Por haberle dado 300 millones al CDS de Adolfo Suárez cuando luego hemos visto lo que hemos visto. No me arrepiento de haberles dado ese dinero…

El Caso Banesto, del que algún medio hizo algún extenso seguimiento, vuelve a ser noticia, pero no lo son los bancos que hoy por hoy tienen los activos muy diversificados en distintas actividades bursátiles y especulativas, incluyendo la única actividad de la que lleva mamando este país 10 años y que ahora se agota, como el vino de la bota: LA CONSTRUCCIÓN.

Si llama la atención que Mario Conde afirme que “el sistema hoy no podría haber acabado conmigo, porque ya no tiene poder”. Que tenga que venir “el ladrón” a advertirnos que nos están robando a cara descubierta y que nadie haga nada…

Imagínense que en nuestra película de acción, los medios de comunicación no investigasen a los bancos, porque están financiados en su mayoría por los mismos. Los políticos por su parte, fuesen íntimos de los presidentes de los bancos (véase Zapatero con Emilio Botín o Aznar como amigo de Francisco González).

Visto lo visto, solo nos queda sentarnos a ver el circo. Si los medios no investigan ni publican tramas de corrupción, es porque también “sus amigos” están podridos. Las tramas destapadas, pocas, y de escasa monta, se han desarrollado allí donde la mano de los poderosos rojos (PSOE – Santander) o azules (PP – BBVA) no llegaba (véase Marbella varias veces).

Si en los medios locales, la financiación proviene en su mayoría de los ayuntamientos, (de ahí la cantidad de publicidad institucional que reciben y los publireportajes políticos del día a día), y de las constructoras (de aquí la cantidad de  promociones inmobiliarias anunciadas en los medios inversamente proporcional a las tramas que  se destapan), y de las siempre sociales cajas de ahorros (y de allá la publicidad a cambio de la difusión interesada de estudios estadísticos que generan las cajas en su obra social y que fusilan los medios), no puedo imaginarme ni por un solo momento cómo estará el país a gran escala.

Medios, políticos y banqueros. Sean líderes de audiencia o no, ganen o no ganen elecciones, sean los administradores de más o menos dinero, nos tienen cogidos porque están aliados. Seguimos Sin Futuro, y cada día más, sin un duro.

Que nadie se asuste por el título del post: Franco murió y está bien enterrado en el Valle de los Caídos -aunque nunca he oído ninguna caída de Franco, de Fidel Castro sí conocemos caídas, pero del Caudillo, Generalísimo o como de otras formas también fuese llamado el dictador genocida, no conocemos ninguna-. Eso está bien claro, y de momento la ciencia no ha avanzado tanto como para que se pueda resucitar a los muertos, y en el caso de que se pueda llegar a este extremo, esperemos -los que no somos filofranquistas- que no lleguen los camisas azules en busca del método resucitador para pedir que vuelvan Franco, Carrero Blanco, Arias Navarro y compañía. Pero aunque haya todavía políticos franquistas vivos y en la política (como Manuel Fraga Iribarne), España lleva cuatro décadas seguidas, que se dice pronto, viviendo con el lastre del franquismo por otros motivos. Y tiene pinta de continuar un tiempo más.

Ese lastre no es Fraga Iribarne -que poder tiene poco, y menos mal que ya no puede ser el máximo responsable de las cargas policiales mientras él es Ministro de Gobernación-, que ya se va teniendo poco en pie aunque sigue ahí, y todo seguramente por haberse bañado en la playa de Palomares (donde cayó una bomba nuclear, sin explotar, se montó un revuelo de tres pares, y Fraga se tuvo que bañar en la playa, con un bañador muy bonito y de pernera larga, no con slips, para demostrar que no había ningún peligro de radiaciones nucleares ni para los vecinos ni para los turistas) cuando era Ministro de Información y Turismo. No, el lastre del que trata este post no es Manuel Fraga, sino el Rey Don Juan Carlos I.

Para los que no conozcan la Historia de España, aquí va un pequeño resumen. En el año 1936 el Ejército da un golpe de Estado que deviene en una Guerra Civil (1936-1939) donde mueren en torno a 200.000 personas y que termina con Francisco Franco Bahamonde como Caudillo y Generalísimo de España. Desde el año 1939 hasta 1975 en España no hay otro Jefe del Estado que Franco. En los años finales del franquismo entra en vigor la Ley Orgánica del Estado, que delega el poder de Franco como Jefe del Gobierno, pero mantiene el poder absoluto porque el nuevo Jefe del Gobierno -lo fueron Carrero Blanco y Arias Navarro antes de que el 20 de noviembre de 1975 Franco muriese- depende de lo que diga Franco. En el año 1969 es cuando entra en acción Juan Carlos de Borbón y Borbón y todo lo que le dé la gana que para eso es Rey -ahora, antes era Príncipe y antes de Príncipe era el hijo del sucesor legítimo de la Monarquía Borbónica, Don Juan, con el que Franco no se llevaba muy bien, lo que le motivó a nombrar sucesor suyo, a título de Rey, al Príncipe Juan Carlos. El 22 de julio de 1969, en las Cortes Españolas, Juan Carlos juraba fidelidad a las Leyes Fundamentales del Movimiento Nacional. Y desde ese momento el Príncipe Juan Carlos ha sido príncipe, ha sido Rey de España -juró como Rey el 22 de noviembre de 1975, dos días después de la muerte del Caudillo- y no ha dejado de ser nunca el lastre del franquismo para la sociedad española.

Porque Juan Carlos es Rey de España no porque la sociedad española lo haya querido, sino todo lo contrario. Francisco Franco tomó la decisión de nombrarle su sucesor, Juan Carlos debía ser la persona que tomara el poder en España para continuar con el franquismo. Y Don Juan Carlos lo hizo, aunque parezca que no. Lo hizo en sus primeros años como Rey nombrando al Presidente del Gobierno que quiso (Adolfo Suárez), después de menos de un año aguantando al Jefe del Gobierno heredado del franquismo (Arias Navarro) y cuando el rumbo que tomó la Transición Española no le gustaba al Rey, el sector más retrógrado del Ejército se cabreó (la gota que colmó el vaso fue la legalización del Partido Comunista). Y cuando el Ejército se enfadó, también lo hizo parte de la sociedad civil (esa parte que participó de cierta manera en el intento de golpe de Estado del 23-F, aunque en el juicio irrisorio se juzgara sólo a unos cuantos militares y la gran mayoría de culpables no acudiesen ante la justicia). Sociedad civil de la que forman parte los periodistas, como Luis María Ansón (en aquellos años director de la Agencia EFE, que para quien no lo sepa era la Agencia de noticias del franquismo).

Porque en los salones de la agencia EFE periodistas, banqueros, militares… y Luis María Ansón discutían sobre la mejor solución de pararle los pies a Adolfo Suárez y sus reformas que no gustaban nada a los retrógrados y nostálgicos del franquismo acabado sólo un par de años antes. Pero que tampoco nadie se equivoque con Adolfo Suárez (igual que nadie debe equivocarse con el Rey), porque Suárez no es ningún demócrata, sino un político trepador del franquismo que quería llegar a ser Presidente del Gobierno y lo consiguió, un falangista que se vistió de demócrata, aunque no lo era en absoluto. Y en los salones de la Agencia EFE se hablaba de las posibilidades de acabar con el Gobierno de Adolfo Suárez (posibilidades que llegaron a los oídos de Adolfo Suárez, y lo que es peor -debido a que no hizo nada por evitarlo, sino que estaba a favor de una de esas posibilidades-, a los oídos del Rey Don Juan Carlos de Borbón y Borbón o del Rey Don Juan Carlos I, que este hombre tiene tantos apellidos que es complicado acordarse de la mejor manera de referirse a su Majestad). Una de esas posibilidades era un golpe de Estado blando; otra era un golpe de Estado duro. El blando consistía en llegar al Congreso de los Diputados, secuestrar a todo quisqui y proponer que el general Armada fuese elegido Presidente de un Gobierno de concentración con todos los Partidos Políticos -el PCE incluido-. El duro -el que quería un personaje con bigote, un ser despreciable que vive tan campante en la actualidad alejado de todo el mundo, cuando debería estar cumpliendo una condena en la cárcel-  consistía en más o menos lo mismo: secuestrar el Congreso de los Diputados, pero formar un Gobierno militar que eliminase todas las reformas políticas que había llevado a cabo Adolfo Suárez.

Así transcurrieron los años finales de la década de 1970 y el primero de la década de 1980. Los militares hasta los huevos de Adolfo Suárez (y del Ministro Gutiérrez Mellado), el Rey consintiendo un golpe de Estado blando (aunque él nunca lo llamase golpe de Estado porque para la imagen de la Monarquía que había que instaurar sí o sí y refrendarla en la Constitución de 1978, es muy malo hablar del consentimiento del Rey en un golpe de Estado para quitar de en medio al mismo Presidente del Gobierno que el propio Rey había elegido para liderar la Transición, pero cambiarla de manera que la Monarquía no se tocase), Luis María Ansón dando comidas para militares, periodistas, banqueros… Todo un espectáculo vergonzoso, en el que los ciudadanos españoles, a pesar de vivir ya en una democracia, no tuvieron nada que decir. Porque en las democracias los ciudadanos sólo votan, pero las decisiones más importantes las toman los políticos; y en una democracia como la española, nacida con las reformas del franquismo, pero sin romper con el franquismo -que es lo que se debía haber hecho si los que estuvieron al frente de la Transición hubiesen sido demócratas de verdad y no títeres manejados por Franco o trepas, como aparece definido Adolfo Suárez en el libro Anatomía de un instante, de Javier Cercas- los ciudadanos tienen menos voz todavía. Y entre los militares, algunos periodistas -como Ansón, aunque como se explica en el libro de Francisco Medina, 23-F, la verdad, no quería que su nombre saliera mucho a la luz-, y el propio Rey decidieron que Adolfo Suárez no podía continuar siendo el Presidente del Gobierno.

Así se gestó el golpe de Estado del 23-F (el día en que, tras la dimisión de Adolfo Suárez como Presidente del Gobierno -por lo que la mitad del golpe ya estaba hecho, Suárez ya no era Presidente-, se celebraba la segunda ronda de la votación de investidura de Leopoldo Calvo Sotelo como nuevo Presidente del Gobierno). Un golpe que fracasó porque lo que debía ser un golpe blando (con el que el Rey estaba de acuerdo, demostrando que más que ser un Rey democrático es un Rey dictador, por la sencilla razón de que a pesar de decir él mismo que no es monárquico -esto no recuerdo si lo he leído en Anatomía de un instante o en 23-F, la verdad- Don Juan Carlos I sí estaba a favor de un golpe de Estado que le quitase el poder a Adolfo Suárez, colocar al general Armada en el poder en un Gobierno de concentración, y como se hablaba en la época, “reconducir” la situación. Pero como un guardia civil, el teniente coronel Antonio Tejero, quería un golpe de Estado duro y un Gobierno militar que regresara el franquismo, inició el golpe de Estado pegando tiros en el Congreso de los Diputados, la Historia de España cambió. El Rey ya no podía estar de acuerdo y dejar pasar el golpe de Estado, tenía que estar en contra. El general Armada no pudo continuar con su plan -que era ir a la Zarzuela y convencer el Rey de que lo mejor era que el propio Armada fuese al Congreso a solucionar el problema, y ser elegido allí mismo por los diputados, nuevo Presidente del Gobierno-, ya que desde la Zarzuela la mano derecha del Rey, Sabino Fernández Campo, le prohibió ir.

Así fracasó el golpe del 23-F, con Tejero pegando tiros -y enfrentándose a Armada cuando éste finalmente fue al Congreso a decirle la solución del golpe blando, y Tejero se encabronó porque él no quería ningún Gobierno de concentración donde los comunistas tuviesen cabida, él no había ido al Congreso y secuestrado a los diputados para eso-, con las Capitanías Generales con cero coordinación entre ellas -porque en principio todas estaban de acuerdo en apoyar el golpe y sacarían los tanques a la calle, pero al final sólo la Capitán General de Valencia, con Milans del Bosch al frente, y parte de la Acorazada Brunete, de la que dependía en gran medida el éxito del golpe, sacaron de verdad los tanques de los cuarteles- y con un Rey que demostró que le importaba más mantener la Monarquía que una democracia sana.

El Rey Don Juan Carlos I no salvó a la democracia, y no fue gracias a la democracia por lo que el golpe fracasó. Porque una democracia (pero una democracia de verdad) está cimentada en los ciudadanos, y los ciudadanos españoles la noche del 23-F no salieron a la calle, sino que se quedaron en sus casas, y si el golpe fracasa, pues ha fracasado, y si el golpe sale bien, pues ha salido bien. La democracia no triunfó con el fracaso del golpe de Estado, sino que lo que hizo fracasar el golpe del 23-F fue una mezcla de descoordinación -entre las Capitanías Generales y entre los propios golpistas, porque Tejero quería un golpe duro y Armada un golpe blando-, mala suerte -para Armada, porque por culpa de Tejero y los disparos de los guardias civiles, el golpe blando se convirtió en un golpe duro- y porque el Rey salvaguardó su Monarquía cuando el golpe blando se convirtió en un golpe duro. Por lo que con el fracaso del golpe de Estado del 23-F lo que de verdad triunfó fue la Monarquía de los Borbones, porque el Rey apareció como un héroe cuando en realidad es un villano. Un villano que a pesar de haber dicho en su juventud que no es monárquico, aceptó en 1969 su nombramiento como sucesor de Franco a título de Rey; un villano que manejó los hilos de la Transición junto a Adolfo Suárez (y una transición a la democracia nunca puede devenir en una democracia de verdad cuando los que la manejan son dos personajes que han llegado al poder en una dictadura y siguiendo las Leyes de esa dictadura) para mantener su poder; y un villano que se convirtió en un falso héroe para los ciudadanos españoles que no conocen la verdadera Historia de España, que no conocen que el Rey no es un demócrata, sino que es un Rey dictador que cuando quiere pone en la Presidencia del Gobierno a un político joven a quien poder manera, y cuando no le gustan los derroteros, y con amenazas del Ejército, decide que lo mejor es dejar que se produzca un golpe de Estado blando para “reconducir” la situación. Y así desde hace cuatro décadas. Porque para comprender porqué el Rey es el mayor lastre del franquismo, hay que comprender cómo fue la Transición y qué ocurrió la noche del 23-F. Sabiendo esto se sabe qué tipo de Rey es el que reina en España, un Rey colocado por un dictador y que se ha comportado como un dictador.

Cuatro décadas viviendo con el lastre del franquismo. Y lo que nos queda, porque cuando Don Juan Carlos muera no veo al Príncipe Felipe renunciando a la Corona y dejando que sean los ciudadanos los que decidan entre Monarquía o República. Que es lo que se debió hacer en la Transición: dejar que los ciudadanos fuesen los que tomaran la decisión de continuar con la Monarquía colocada por Franco, o comenzar la III República y no continuar con un lastre franquista como la Monarquía de Don Juan Carlos I, nombrado sucesor de Franco hace hoy 40 años.

Pero como esto no ocurre, continuamos con el lastre del franquismo.

23-F, La verdad, de Francisco Medina

Hoy se ha comunicado que el Premio Ortega y Gasset a la Mejor Información Gráfica. Es decir a la fotografía de prensa. Se lo han concedido a una foto que realizó un hijo de Adolfo Suárez, y en la que aparecen de espaldas este último abrazado por el rey. Tan en el diario Público como en El País podéis ver dos versiones de la fotografía. En este último, recortada.

Yo no soy profesional de la fotografía, ni mucho menos. Pero soy aficionado. Con todos mis respetos, la fotografía es técnicamente… en el mejor de los casos banal,… pero casi me atrevería a decir mala. Carece de interés informativo actual. Ambos personajes representan un periodo histórico muy importante en este país. Pero ya no. Como mucho el rey, claro. Pero tampoco tiene la presencia y la importancia que suponían su persona y su figura en las turbulencias de la transición. Obviamente, la imagen tiene que tener una fuerte carga emotiva, una fuerte significación personal, para la persona que la tomó. Es normal. Y muy respetable. Por supuesto. Pero tengo la sensación que a lo largo de 2008 se han publicado muchas, muchas, muchas más fotografías, realizadas con gran capacidad técnica, por profesionales competente de la información gráfica, que se lo han currado día a día, y con mucha más significación actual, política o social. Supongo que en los próximos días oiremos o leeremos las reacciones de los profesionales. Pero cada vez me convencen menos los criterios por los que se dan los premios en este país. Decepcionante. Tanto más cuanto que están promovidos por un díario como El País que tanto ha supuesto en el desarrollo de la comunicación y la libertad de expresión en este país en las últimas décadas.

Pues nada. Sólo era eso. Opinar humildemente desde mi afición a la fotografía, así como desde mi posición de ciudadano con una mínima preocupación por las cosas que pasan en la sociedad en la que le ha tocado vivir.

Supongo que próximamente hablaré más de Adolfo Suárez. Estoy leyendo el libro de Javier Cercas sobre el 23-F. Interesante. Y sólo llevo la cuarta parte del libro.

El PP quiere presentar en el Congreso una proposición no de ley para cambiar el nombre del Aeropuerto de Barajas por Aeropuerto Internacional Adolfo Suárez. No me parecía mala idea. Si por algo me sigue interesando la política, el desarrollo de la democracia y la posibilidad de hacer algún bien desde la Administración es por gente como él (aunque acaben de darme once días de “vacaciones” en el Ayuntamiento porque estos días “no hay mucho que hacer”)

Pero en el blog Mi mesa cojea, escrito por José A. Pérez, columnista del diario Público, se enumeran diez razones  de peso para no hacerlo, 10 frases que, tarde o temprano, acabaremos oyendo  si la proposición sale adelante:

1. Adolfo Suárez es la principal entrada de cocaína en España.

10. Estoy del Adolfo Suárez hasta los cojones.
