NBC’s Heroes has finally decided to kill off an original cast member from the show. I put all

NBC’s Heroes has finally decided to kill off an original cast member from the show. I put all my hopes in that fact that it would be Hayden Panettiere’s character of Claire Bennett, but alas, she cannot die. Instead, Heroes has opted to off Nathan Petrelli (Adrian Pasdar). This is an interesting choice seeing that they’ve “killed” him before 3 times but he has miraculously comes back.

But this time, it’s for good. Greg Grunberg who plays Matt Parkman stated in an interview that the Petrelli Brothers were “safe”, but I guess he got incorrect information. Pasdar’s exit from the show came as a surprise to the actor. Apparently, he found out that he was getting the boot from reading the script (ouch).

No word on when Pasdar’s last episode on the show is, but be sure that he will not survive season 4. Let’s see if this death will help the show. I doubt it seeing that he’s “died” already.

I know I haven’t been watching Heroes. I pretty much broke up with the series after the atroc

I know I haven’t been watching Heroes. I pretty much broke up with the series after the atrocity they call season 2. And then again one third of the way through season 3. So I haven’t really been keeping up with my Heroes news.

But it has been confirmed by a source, but not by NBC, that Adrian Pasdar who plays Nathan Petrelli, will no longer be on the show. Apparently, he’s been killed of before: the end of season 3 when Sylar had slit his throat. But he had come back to do guest spots and take on the guise of other characters. However, this is rumored to be the FINAL farewell for the elder Petrelli brother.

Am I surprised? Not sure. The real question is: do I care? And there is no simple answer to that one.

Heroes has been teetering on the edge of being a mediocre show for quite some time. And again, I have to mention that I gave up on it long ago. Believe it or not, I actually tuned in for a few scenes when I got home from work tonite. And I’m not gonna lie, but it was more background noise than anything else.

Also, it’s not really the kind of show that you can put down and pick up randomly at any episode. You really have to follow it, because the stories are so intermingled and twisted together, and so very elaborate. And it’s not for the casual viewer, unfortunately. It’s for the dedicated fan who has been watching since the beginning. But how many of those are left anyway?

ANYway, Adrian Pasdar will be leaving the show. His final episode has yet to air, although NBC will not confirm or deny the rumors.

What do you think about Heroes this season?

Image via Wikipedia

Nikki Finke is reporting that Adrian Pasdar, who plays Nathan Petrelli, has been let go from Heroes.

While some people, like my eternally naysaying friend The Notorious RJP (Welcome back, by the way, Robert!) are insisting that this is a terrible move and yet another example of Heroes heading downhill fast, I look at this as a good thing for the show, if not for Pasdar.

I never really liked Nathan, he was always one of the most annoying yet boring characters on the show. Turning him into an even bigger douche last year didn’t help his case at all and the only really interesting thing that could be done with the character has already been done when Sylar killed him and then was forced to take over his personality. With Sylar’s own consciousness reasserting itself in his body, everyone should have known that “Nathan’s” days were numbered.

What makes this very interesting to me is that I was just reading about an interview that Greg Grunberg, who plays Matt Parkman, did where he stated that the upcoming death of a main character was not one of the Petrelli brothers. Thus it looks like we’ll be seeing two major characters leave this season.

Edit: The title of this post originally had a question mark because there was a slight possibility that Nikki Finke was wrong, but I’ve just read an article by Kristin Dos Santos on E!’s website not only confirming that Nathan is gone but that his death is the one that has been rumored all along. This indicates that either Greg Grunberg was either throwing up a smokescreen or that there’s another death that hasn’t been leaked yet.

Director: Christopher Denham
Starring: Adrian Pasdar, Cady McClain
Score: 8 / 10

This review by Darren Todd of The Automaton for my 31 Days of Horror

If watching The Blair Witch Project, Quarantine, or Cloverdale made you sick and ruined your enjoyment of the film, then you should probably skip this review. At least I mentioned that in the first sentence.

If you didn’t get sick – if indeed you like the style of shooting as I do – then Home Movie should be your next rental (or buy).

With only four actors (one of whom is Adrian Pasdar – Nathan Petrelli from Heroes), and a direction that is clear in the first five minutes, Home Movie really needs more than jump scares and creepy kids to keep it afloat, and it indeed comes through in a big way. While the camcorder style of shooting can give the film a less professional feel, Home Movie’s scenes are tightly crafted and feel very purposeful, which speaks a lot to the way in which it is edited. Though it only rings in at an hour and twenty minutes, I don’t feel gypped, but rather happy with how tight the scenes feel.

Too, there are a number of more subtle sight and sound elements that make a subsequent view a must, as you’ll inevitably be trying to put some things together at the end.

Mostly, despite the aforementioned predictability, the film stayed with me for some time, as I kept thinking about what facets of the plot might have meant. It is this complexity in a simple package that is untimately Home Video’s greatest appeal. Stacked against far flatter, jump scare horror films, Home Video proves much richer and more distrubing. Don’t think you’ll jump out of your seat so much as you’ll find yourself unable to sleep, which is the mark of great horror in my opinion.

(Season 4, Episode 4)

What are you doing with your life? Are you happy with what you do every day, 40 or more hours a week? If not, then you’re not truly living your life, you’re living someone else’s. Only when you realize that this life is a gift and it’s so much shorter than any of us can possibly realize, can you truly start to live for yourself. Take a risk. Do what you want. Do what makes you happy.

That’s pretty heady stuff, but it was apparently on the Heroes writers’ minds tonight, because that’s exactly what this episode was about. And it turned out pretty well. There were moments of true growth for several of our characters, some good and some probably not so good.

How is it possible that a show that started with so much promise could fall so far? Did the show crumble under it’s own hype and press? Or was it the fans fault for expecting too much? Whatever the answer to those questions are the one thing that remains clear and that is Heroes is a shadow of it’s formal self. When at one time we cared about what happens to the characters, now we know that no matter what the storyline dictates Hiro, Nathan, Peter, and the rest will end up fine. Oh sure the new Heroes don’t stand much of a chance of survival, but the core group will be around til the end. How many times does Tracy (or whatever her name is this season) or even Nathan have to die before they are actually dead?

Tonight’s episode was titled Acceptance and i spent the entire episode trying to find the common thread between the stories that showed that each character was learning to accept their lives or situations. I get that Tracy learned to accept that her life is different now and she needs more than to work for an oversexed Govenor. Plus the scene with her getting out of the bath struck me as oddly funny and cool. The connection she has with HRG (I cant bring myself to call him Noah, I just cant) is possibly one of the best on the show right now. Hopefully the writers dont screw it up.

Perhaps the funniest storyline of the episode was Hiro repeatedly trying to save the guy from jumping off the roof. That guy really like photocopying his butt! But then again saving people has always been Hiro’s biggest weakness, because you can’t save everyone no matter how hard you try. Even though in the end he did save him just by talking to him and not trying to change the past, I think it would be a more interesting story to see the fallout of what happens when Hiro can’t be the hero. Um where did his sister come from and why are we to believe the Ando has been pining for her all those years? Dont yell at me if they have mentioned her before and I just didnt notice. But I have noticed that Mohinder seems to be missing from the cast. I dont remember him being written out of the show or any of the boards saying he was no longer on the show. But seeing as how I don’t tend to follow the show faithfully it’s quite possible I just didnt care enough to pay attention.

The age old question of what does a guy do when he no longer has a job chasing down rogue people with powers? Well he eats cereal and has a mock job interview with his daughter of course. I swear the respect I have for Jack Coleman as an actor grows and grows everytime he is in a scene. Put any one else on the show in a scene talking about what kind of job he should do would seem so forced but Jack has a way of making it all seem natural. And for once Claire didn’t irritate me and her hair no longer reminds me of the Scarecrow from the Wizard of Oz. So progress is being made, slowly. But thank goodness he realized by the end of the episode that he is and always will be a “Company Man.”

Poor, poor Nathan. He has got to be the most manipulated character on the show. They might as well just attach strings to him so he becomes the real puppet he is and not the boy he is pretending to be. First you get killed by Sylar (who you really are by the way) than your dear mom plays tricks on your mind to keep you as the well-behaved boy you have alwys been, and finally when you admit to an accident that your mother (are we seeing a pattern here?) covered up you get shot for your troubles. Although tonights final scene with Nathan being shot and buried and Sylar rising was pretty cool. And I especially like the preview to next weeks episode that showed Sylar didn’t realize he was Sylar. But I have promised myself not to put to much stake in previews.

  Random Thoughts:

What happened to Micah? Is Tracy the last of the blonde bombshells? Why did Peter get served? Is Ando going to have anything to do this season? What in the hell is up with the Carnival? If Samuel is supposed to be a villian when is he going to start being a bad guy? Why is he a villian? What is the tatoo girls power? When they say Ray Park is going to be on for a sizeable arc, does that mean we get to see him only a couple of times before he gets killed in an absolutely ridiculous way? I swear if they have him killed by Peter or any one else through fighting I am going to scream!!!

First off, I would like to say that I was extremely disappointed to hear that this movie exists. A c

First off, I would like to say that I was extremely disappointed to hear that this movie exists. A couple of years ago I was working on a script with the exact same title and a somewhat similar plot (home movies in which increasingly bizarre things happen). I don’t know why I was working on a script, as I don’t know anything about screenwriting, but I have this habit of starting things that are way too ambitious and then realizing halfway through that I don’t have the right skill set to complete them. When I was eight I wanted to do a paint-by-numbers painting, so naturally I bought this enormous 42-inch wide oil painting set. Sometimes I go through periods where I buy a ton of fabric, convinced that I am going to make messenger bags or skirts or whatever, forgetting the fact that I don’t know anything really about sewing. I have yarn, even though I don’t know how to knit.

Anyway, I guess I had some sort of psychic connection with the director of this film, and so he basically stole my idea and I should get royalties. That is the only rational explanation.

This is another entry in the hand-held, 1st person, shaky cam video genre that is very, very trendy (and has been for about a decade), and therefore even trendier to hate. Well, screw that. I love this format, and there have been few films in that vein that I haven’t enjoyed on some level.

Home Movie tells the story of a really attractive, intelligent psychiatrist played by Cady McClain, who is for some reason married to a clearly deranged Lutheran pastor with a troubled past. Most of the times we see him, he is talking in funny voices and/or wearing elaborate costumes of some kind. The pastor is played by Adrian Pasdar, who was an unwilling Texan vampire in Near Dark (excellent film), and Nathan Petrelli in Heroes (okay show). They have two children who are obviously possessed/influenced by demons, although their mother thinks they just need medication because she is a Serious Doctor.

Evil kids.

The trouble with the children apparently began with their move to a new house, which is in the middle of nowhere, although apparently close enough that the wife can work in Philadelphia and the insane man can still be a pastor. We know that it is in the middle of nowhere, because they mention it in almost every conversation they have in front of the camera. “Here we are playing baseball, we can do this because we live in the middle of nowhere and we moved here recently,” “I love you so much that I was willing to move to the middle of nowhere even though you are clearly deranged, my husband,” “Can’t you see the children starting acting weird because there are demons living in this house in the middle of nowhere that we have moved to?”

Those may not be exact quotes, but they probably are.

Adrian Pasdar copes with the fact that his children are evil by teaching them useful things (which he often tells the camera are “ancient arts”, said in a funny voice) like how to pick locks and how to tie knots that are impossible to escape from, and also by casually saying things like “dead things go in trash bags.” Personally, for the first 70% of the film, I would much rather be left alone in a room with the demon children than this wacky/terrifying pastor.

"This is how you tie the perfect knot to restrain and murder people. Enjoy!"

When things escalate on the demon child front, he films himself telling the camera that Lutherans don’t believe in exorcisms, but then does one anyway by lighting candles all over the house and tying his children to the bed and hitting them and yelling for the demons to leave.

…

Aside from those issues, I actually thought the movie was pretty great, and it’s a shame it’s only available on DVD in Canada right now. The kids are wonderful, especially in a Thanksgiving scene in which they throw things off of the table in unison every time their father begins the prayer.

Adrian Pasdar’s creepy factor: 8/10

Ability of Adrian Pasdar to react to his children’s behavior in an appropriate way: 4/10

Ending: 9/10 (I didn’t want to spoil it for you)

Creepiness of the things the kids do: 7/10

Anne rating: 7/10

Near Dark is an American vampire/Western horror film, written by Eric Red and Kathryn Bigelow, and directed by Bigelow. Starring then little-known actors Adrian Pasdar and Jenny Wright, the movie was released in 1987, part of a revival of serious vampire movies in the late 1980s. It did poorly at the box office upon release, but was viewed favourably by critics subsequently and has a sizable cult following.

Plot: A young cowboy is seduced by a new girl in town only to find out he has been kissed by a vampire. Slowly turning into a creature of the night, he is persuaded to join up with the girl and a roaming band of ghouls. But when his own father and sister become targets in the vampires’ endless search for ‘food,’ he is forced to choose between loyalty to the vampires, or loyalty his own family.

Kathryn Bigelow wanted to film a Western movie that departed from cinematic convention, which at the time was strongly identified with the films of John Wayne and John Ford. When she and co-writer Eric Red found financial backing for a Western difficult to obtain, it was suggested to them that they try mixing a Western with another, more popular genre. Her interest in revisionist interpretation of cinematic tradition led her and Red to the idea of combining two genres that they regarded as ripe for reinterpretation: the Western movie, and the vampire movie, whose conventions largely derived from Bela Lugosi’s performance in Dracula. The film was scored by the German electronic music group Tangerine Dream, who also created the soundtracks for Risky Business and Legend.

Trivia:

Unusually for a vampire movie, the word “vampire” is never mentioned.

As Caleb staggers through town, just before the bus stop scene – the cinema behind him in showing Aliens (1986) which also featured Bill Paxton, Lance Henriksen and Jenette Goldstein.

In the scene where Caleb lets the young cowboy from the bar get away, a billboard can be seen in the background spray paint with “Bill + Louise”. Bill Paxton, who plays Severen, is married to Louise Newbury.

Was the last movie produced and released by DEG (DeLaurentiis Entertainment Group) as the studio went bankrupt. As a result, the film did not receive much publicity during its release in the fall of 1987 which lead, in turn, to its box office failure.

This film marked Kathryn Bigelow’s first solo directorial effort and the film’s producer, Edward S. Feldman told her that if she couldn’t handle or didn’t know what she was doing while filming after five days, she would be replaced. She kept the job.

In the scene where Severen and Jesse torch the motor home, Severen asks Jesse if he had remembered about a “fire that they had started in Chicago”. It refers to the great fire in the Midwest/Chicago in 1871 that left more than 100,000 people homeless and destroyed businesses. The fire still remains a mystery to this day.

Near Dark got a K18 rating in 1988 by the Finnish Board of Film Classification. That meant, in those days, ‘for theatrical release only’. However, some film critics received VHS copies (most probably from Transworld Video) with Finnish subtitles ca. 1990. There were also reports that videos were accidentally available a few days to the general public before they were drawn back from video stores.

Both Johnny Depp and D.B. Sweeney auditioned for the role of Caleb.

While shooting in the desert, Lance Henriksen relieved the boredom between takes by hopping in his car and taking short drives through the desert, still in costume and often staying in character. According to Henriksen and Bill Paxton, the two were stopped by a policeman who became so unnerved questioning Jesse about his speeding that the officer became visibly uncomfortable, stepping back and placing his hand on his firearm. The obviously flustered officer decided to send them on their way rather than write them a ticket.

Michael Biehn turned down a role in the movie because he was not satisfied with the script.

According to the Making of Near Dark that appears on the DVD, the fog under Adrian Pasdar’s shirt was caused by a complicated series of tubes leading to five lit cigars under his shirt.

Ok, so I was looking at last years reviews trying to remember what we watched and it appears that we started our little fest a lot earlier last year, like September 3rd early. Wow! So we’ve made up for our late start by watching a movie almost every night. So here goes…

September 21, 2009

Vargtimmen/The Hour of the Wolf (1968) Written and directed by Ingmar Bergman 3/5

I’m still not entirely sure how I feel about this film. It’s not so much a horror film as it is a psychological thriller and even then it’s more bizarre than it is thrilling. Max von Sydow plays Johan Borg, a mentally disturbed artist living in the countryside with his wife, Alma (Liv Ullman). It’s a dark film filled with strange and sometimes disturbing imagery which only grows more bizarre as Johan’s mind unravels. I suppose Bergman intended to viewer to feel like his protagonist, Alma. We don’t know whether what we’re seeing is real or imagined, however we know it’s very real to Johan, but what we see is difficult to understand. In the end Bergman leaves both Alma and the viewer to come to their own conclusions.

September 22, 2009

Martyrs (2008) Written and directed by Pascal Laugier 4/5

As I get older I find that I can handle less and less gore, making torture movies almost unbearable to watch. If you’re into that sort of thing you should totally check out this film though. The violence is gut wrenchingly graphic and disturbing (I had trouble sleeping the night I watched it thanks to some of the images I found imprinted on my brain). However, I felt like the violence in the film wasn’t so much violence for the sake of violence as we often see today, but to convey a message. The plot was unlike anything I’ve ever seen before. The first half of the movie feels like a Japanese horror film. A girl is propelled by revenge; haunted by the demons from her past, demons only she can see, but the second half is something quite different. Instead of leading you down the expected circular path most of these films take you on, Laugier takes you in a whole different direction, turning the film into something made only more sinister by the involvement of religion. Laugier goes to great lengths to show the viewer just how far religious fervor can take someone…how people can do unspeakable horrors, but he does this without involving any one particular religion. It’s really a spectacular film if you can put aside the gore, but then again without it I doubt the film would’ve made as much of an impact. This movie is definitely worth watching if you’re into horror, but if you don’t like seeing humanity at its worst I suggest you stay away. I can’t really say I enjoyed watching this film, but I’m glad I did, it was good, so good I will probably never watch it again.

September 23, 2009

Hard Candy (2005) Written by Brian Nelson, directed by David Slade 4/5

I’m not really quite sure what I was expecting when this film arrived on our doorstep. I think I was expecting something seedier, something darker and though the film was not what I expected it was great. Ellen Page is fantastic as a seemingly innocent young girl intent on terrorizing a child molester. This film was tame in comparison to Martyrs and I imagine the film’s psychological terrorizing works more on men than on women, since the person being attacked in the film is a man. It was still enjoyable though. I always enjoy a good revenge movie, especially one with strong female characters and a great cast of competent actors.

September 24, 2009

Island of Lost Souls (1937) Based on the novel The Island of Dr. Moreau by H.G. Wells, directed by Erle C. Kenton 4/5

This film is by far my favorite adaptation of H.G. Wells’ novel The Island of Dr. Moreau, though it is interesting to note that Wells was not a fan and that this film was banned in Britain for several years. Charles Laughton does a magnificent job of portraying the megalomaniacal scientist Dr. Moreau. A man intent on speeding up evolution by making animals into quasi-humans going so far as to teach them “The Law” which includes not eating meat, not spilling blood and not walking on all fours. Each of these laws is followed by united cries of “Are we not men?” Moreau is viewed as a god on his little island, but when some unexpected visitors come along his research is compromised and he’s forced to order his creatures to break the law which leads to chaos. The film explores man’s relation to beasts begging the question: Are men truly superior to beasts or are we all savages?

September 25, 2009

The Wolf Man (1941) Written by Curt Siodmak, directed by George Waggner 3/5

This film was exactly what I expected. Lon Cheney Jr. plays the titular character in this Hammer Horror Classic. I used to love watching movies like this one when I was a kid; black and white affairs featuring damsels in distress who must be rescued from some sort of creature. There’s no gore, nothing to really cause you fright (unless you’re 5 or my grandma), but they’re good, entertaining stories which I can watch over and over again.

September 26, 2009

Near Dark (1987) Written by Kathryn Bigelow and Eric Red, directed by Kathryn Bigelow 3/5

Seems like teen vampire stories like Twilight are all anyone talks about these days as if it’s a new concept, but Near Dark was out long before Stephenie Meyer ever even thought of writing about Edward and Bella. Adrian Pasdar (Heroes) stars as Caleb Colton, a young Texan farm boy who picks the wrong girl to flirt with when he meets Mae. Unfortunately for Caleb, Mae has little self control biting him as dawn approaches and within minutes he finds himself kidnapped by a gang of vampires which includes Bill Paxton and Lance Henriksen. Like John Carpenter’s Vampires or From Dusk ‘til Dawn what follows is a vampire western of sorts with a little romance thrown in. The film is a bit dated and cheesy at times, but it’s entertaining and I’d take Caleb Colton over Edward Cullen any day.

(Season 4, Episode 3)

Let’s talk candidly. After all, it looks like you and I are the only ones left watching this show. Remember the good old days when Heroes was the top-rated show on NBC and all the talk at the proverbial water coolers? It feels like it was only three years ago.

It’s a shame that it looks like this ratings erosion is a permanent one, as tonight was a good installment. Unless things turn around immediately, it’s a pretty safe bet this will be the last volume of Heroes. They need to sneak in some stunt casting or film a live episode or whore the stars out to all the talk shows relentlessly if they want to save the show. If they want to.

Things are definitely getting interesting again. I’m glad Heroes went with a two-hour premiere, because it wasn’t until the end of this hour that we had enough to really grab our attention again. As expected, Samuel Sullivan and the Sullivan Brothers Carnival are right at the heart of the mystery right now.

There’s another mystery brewing at Claire’s college. Or maybe there isn’t. Could what happened with Annie be as straightforward as everyone seems to want us to believe? But now that’s the least of Claire’s problems, due to her little impromptu experiment.

(Season 4, Episode 1)

A new volume and new faces … on the show, that is. At this point, I think it’s a bit of a pipe dream by NBC to think they can nab new viewers. And as much as I was hoping they’d make this as accessible as possible, things are still pretty hopelessly complex. The situation with Nathan/Sylar alone is enough to make any new viewer change the channel. Maybe see how House is coping with life in the asylum.

On the other hand, Robert Knepper has joined the cast as Samuel, the leader of the Sullivan Brothers Carnival, and I couldn’t be more excited. No matter how ridiculous Prison Break got over four years, Knepper was just deliciously villainous as T-Bag. And he’s just as enigmatic on camera here.

Adoro! Entre milões de fitos que existem deles (-n) essas são as que eu mais amo, demais da conta.

Um dos meus videos favoritos deles que rola na net (L) Resume TUDO!

Much like Blair Witch, this movie is compiled from footage found in the woods of Upstate New York. It follows the picture perfect family as they slowly begin to disintegrate when their two young children seem to grow more and more ‘evil’.

Written and Directed by – Christopher Denham

Starring – Adrian Pasdar, Cady McClain, Amber Joy Williams, Austin Williams

Nothing says creepy like small children. It’s the reason I sleep with one eye open around here. Ya never know when one of my cute kids will slide out from underneath the bed to play smother the Daddy!

I think alot of people went into this one expecting some blood and gore and there really isn’t any of that here. This is all about what you don’t see. It’s a families home movies so when things start to go wonky, the camera is usually turned off. Even with that happening we still get a quick glimpse, here and there, at what seems to be a growing madness within the two kids.

I really liked this one. I like the fact that you’re not given all the creepy moments and it lets your imagination run wild with what could be going on. The acting is top notch and the frustration that grows in the parents throughout the film is believable. What parent could think their children could be capable of anything even remotely evil, unless your kids looked like this.

If these were my kids, I'd be buying locks for my door!

Some people are going to find this one pretty slow to start, but that’s an important part of the movie. We’re watching a family fall apart at the seams. The final scene is genuinely creepy though and it left me with an uneasy feeling afterwards. Or that could be the fear that I have my own two kids that are just about this age! HAHA! It stuck with me and I had a hell of a time finding this one afterwards. It wasn’t until maybe a few weeks ago that I managed to get my hands on it. It was worth it though as I sometimes appreciate a flick that lets my imagination do all the dirty work for it. Sometimes what we think is alot worse than anything someone could show us.
