Monday night, Apple (s aapl) premiered two new iPhone ads that are actually aimed at pointing out the downsides of Verizon&#8217;s network, though they don&#8217;t state that outright.</p>
<p>The two new ads, <a href="http://www.businessweek.com/technology/ByteOfTheApple/blog/archives/2009/11/apple_launching.html" target="_self">posted by BusinessWeek</a> ahead of their U.S. television debut, depict different scenarios in which you want to access data-using features of your iPhone while also remaining on a call. This is something you can do on AT&#38;T&#8217;s HSDPA/UMTS 3G network, but not something you can do using Verizon&#8217;s CDMA-based one. <!--more--></p>
<p>In the first ad, three different scenarios where you might want to check something without leaving your call are depicted. They include a client call, talking to a friend and changing a reservation, and talking to your wife and ordering flowers for your anniversary.</p>

<p>The second ad depicts a single call with a friend, during which you can check movie times, location, and restaurant details. Both ads follow this post.</p>
<p>The ads are clearly aimed at Verizon customers. I was actually completely unaware that the ability to use both voice calling and data access at the same time was even a feature. I do it constantly without even thinking about it. Would I miss it if I&#8217;d never had it to begin with? Hard to say.</p>

<p>There&#8217;s another question the ads bring up. Does network reliability trump multitasking when it comes to cell phone usage? As convenient as it is to be able to pop in and out of the phone app to check on showtimes and other little luxuries, does it really matter if there are huge blackout zones where you can&#8217;t even take a call to begin with, let alone take one and use your network data simultaneously?</p>
<p>In my opinion, these ads fare very poorly when compared to their Mac counterparts. The &#8220;Get a Mac&#8221; series of ads manages to target an Apple competitor cleverly, and in an entertaining fashion. Apple&#8217;s iPhone ads have never been anywhere near as good, but so far, they haven&#8217;t had to be. I&#8217;d expect more from Cupertino in response to the first real challenge to the iPhone&#8217;s market domination, Verizon&#8217;s Droid, than this sort of middle-of-the-road effort that doesn&#8217;t address the main concern customers wary of AT&#38;T still have.</p>
<p>Apple&#8217;s clearly doing this for AT&#38;T, but both companies need to get their acts together if they want to counteract the clever work coming out of Verizon&#8217;s camp. Here&#8217;s a tip: A little Hodgman goes a Long way.</p>

<p>I&#8217;m generally not tracking the &#8220;post ads to your social networks&#8221; movement, be it sponsored blog posts or tweeting ads to your followers on Twitter. There is one aspect to it that I think is most important: disclosure. Robert Scoble has a post up, <a href="http://scobleizer.com/2009/11/21/in-tweet-advertisements/" target="_blank">More thoughts on in-Tweet advertising</a>, where he notes that he unfollowed people on Twitter who were running ads:</p>
<p style="padding-left:30px;"><em>So, I unfollowed and won’t be looking back. Actually I unfollowed Pirillo too. I don’t think he’s disclosed everything clearly or explained where his ads were coming from and until he does I’ll stay away.</em></p>
<p>His perspective reminded me of an experience I had years ago in the late 90s when I worked as an investment banker for Bank of America. It taught me the right way to disclose unsavory facts.</p>
<h4><span style="color:#3366ff;">Selling a Superfund Deal: The Wrong Way<br />
</span></h4>
<p>You know what the <a href="http://www.epa.gov/superfund/" target="_blank">Superfund</a> is? It&#8217;s the federal government&#8217;s program to clean up the nation&#8217;s uncontrolled hazardous waste sites. Throughout America, there are parcels of land with dangerous materials in them. Superfund is there to help get them cleaned up.</p>
<p>We had a client, a rising star in the software world, that need financing for a new headquarters in Mountain View, CA. A headquarters built on a Superfund site. That designation, from 8 years before, meant the land had been declared a hazardous waste site. By the time of the deal, the site itself was cleaned up, and was in an &#8220;operation and maintenance&#8221; phase. Its status was sufficient for the company to build on. But anything with &#8220;Superfund&#8221; on it is a big red flag in banking. And we knew it.</p>
<p>I was in the debt financing unit, and I worked with our real estate group on this one. After deliberating, we decided to bury the Superfund status deep in the materials selling the deal &#8211; in the prospectus, in the deal presentation. Act essentially as if it was a non-event.</p>
<p>Which at this point, was true. The property was clean and ready for development.</p>
<p>It was also a mistake.</p>
<p>Other banks got to the Superfund status of the site as they went through their analysis of the deal, and saw that it had an afterthought treatment. They didn&#8217;t like that.</p>
<p>And they didn&#8217;t participate in the deal at the levels we had expected. We got stuck with a larger percentage of the deal than we wanted. We scrambled, got one other bank to join and accepted holding a larger portion of the deal.</p>
<p>Wasn&#8217;t a pleasant experience. Nope, not at all.</p>
<h4><span style="color:#3366ff;">Selling a Superfund Deal: The Right Way</span></h4>
<p><span style="color:#3366ff;"><span style="color:#000000;">It&#8217;s not often in life you get a chance to rectify a mistake so readily. But I did. Several months later, the software company approached us to increase the deal size, by nearly double.</span> <span style="color:#000000;">You might imagine the trepidation that request caused internally.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="color:#3366ff;"><span style="color:#000000;">To raise double the amount, after having a number of banks turn us down, meant we were going to have to go much deeper in the market. It wouldn&#8217;t be easy.<br />
</span></span></p>
<p><span style="color:#3366ff;"><span style="color:#000000;">We decided to do it, but with a big shift in approach. We led with the Superfund status. Put it out there, and directly address issues. Create a separate write-up that specifically addressed the Superfund status, the remediation efforts, and the reasons Bank of America was comfortable with it.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="color:#3366ff;"><span style="color:#000000;">When I got out there and presented the deal at the prospective lenders meeting, I talked in detail about the Superfund site, upfront. Amazingly, no one got up and left the meeting. They seemed to take it in stride.<br />
</span></span></p>
<p><span style="color:#3366ff;"><span style="color:#000000;">And the result? Easily got the larger deal done, and even increased its size a bit.</span></span></p>
<h4><span style="color:#3366ff;">Lesson: Don&#8217;t Be Cute</span></h4>
<p><span style="color:#3366ff;"><span style="color:#000000;">What did I learn? People aren&#8217;t stupid. Treating them that way is a sure recipe to piss them off. Scoble&#8217;s comment illuminates that fact. </span></span></p>
<p><span style="color:#3366ff;"><span style="color:#000000;">I&#8217;m not saying openly declared ads will be welcome, but for sure trying to slip &#8216;em in to the tweet stream is the wrong way to go. There is a &#8220;right&#8221; way to go about this advertising thing, if it&#8217;s going to happen. Acknowledge people&#8217;s concerns, and address them intelligently. You&#8217;d be surprised the effect that has.<br />

<p><span style="color:#888888;">De acordo com o IDGNow!, os termos incluem o uso do Bing, ferramenta de busca, nas páginas de pesquisa do Yahoo!, que recebeira 88% da receita dos anúncios.</span></p>
<p><span style="color:#888888;">No mês passado, as empresas perderam o prazo para mostrar detalhes do acordo. Mas, o prazo foi estendido sem uma data específica. Para ser colocado em prática, ele precisa de aprovação de agências reguladoras da Europa e dos Estados Unidos.<br />

<p>This commercial truly sells it&#8217;s product. I know when I watch it I certainly feel like I could use a shot, and I don&#8217;t even really drink. Orson Welles did another commercial that&#8217;s famous for him getting his drunk on, which has been covered to death. This one however is definitely an iconic celebrity overseas commercial and deserving of an entry. It&#8217;s also one of the most depressing commercials ever made. You look at this cinematic giant chuckling into his whiskey and you see the underlying sadness in his eyes. Watching it after learning New Moon broke all kinds of records&#8230; yeah, I think I need something to pick me up.</p>

<p>Thanksgiving is coming so it&#8217;s only appropriate to list things I&#8217;m thankful for.</p>
<p>1. That I&#8217;m not a teenage girl or a sad middle aged woman who looks upon the Twilight series as crack.</p>
<p>2. That eagles are the national bird and not turkeys. &#8216;Cause I bet eagles taste awful.</p>
<p>3. Benches and chairs, for otherwise tables would be rendered pointless.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>&#8220;It&#8217;s the end of the world as we know it,&#8221; sang R.E.M. in their 1987 hit by the same name.  Unfortunately, newspaper offices around the country have heard this tune many more than times than they would&#8217;ve liked to.  And new updates from The Associated Press don&#8217;t help matters much.</p>
<p>Last week, the AP reported that newspapers&#8217; advertising revenue fell by about 29 percent in the third quarter of 2009, dropping to $5.8 billion with classified ad revenue down about 40 percent to $1.5 billion.  The consolidation of classified ads through Monster, eBay and Craigslist have facilitated this problem.</p>
<p>Likewise, the Newspaper Association of America (NAA) said print and online combined ad revenues sunk to $6.4 billion in the third quarter from $8.9 billion during the same period last year.</p>
<p>As daunting as print figures were, newspaper companies couldn&#8217;t have been too happy with the most recent online numbers.  With print ad revenue obviously in decline and differentiated online ads appearing the way of the future (eventually), the national drop in online revenue poses great obstacles for publications planning to charge for Web access and those that already do.  Overall, third quarter online ad revenue declined by about 17 percent to $623 million, still well behind the amount brought in for print advertisements.</p>
<p>And not to be the bearer of bad news &#8211; it&#8217;s hard not to be these days &#8211; but print ad revenue for American papers has now fallen for 13 consecutive quarters.  Online ad revenue has nose-dived for the last six quarters.</p>
<p>Circulation downfalls are partially to blame, as are advertising companies&#8217; financial troubles in the recession.  It&#8217;ll be very interesting to see how the industry picks itself up once the economy stumbles to its feet.  That&#8217;s assuming, of course, that print will survive the next decade, let alone the next few years.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>What if a friend on twitter (some you know well either in real life, or just online) told you where to get personalized m&#38;ms and included a link? Would you click it? Do you ever click a shortened link, not knowing where it will end up?</p>
<p>According to an <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/22/business/22ping.html?_r=1&#38;partner=rss&#38;emc=rss">article from the New York Times</a> Tweets are the next billboards for rent. There are several start ups that are looking for Tweeters to hand over their feed for a quick ad. They&#8217;re hoping to use celebrities with thousands of followers, but also regular tweeters too. These tweeters get paid, but the start-ups take a cut. Some companies differentiate between celebrities and Joe schmoes, while others just take a 30% cut across the board.  A sample tweet would be marked as sponsored, which would let followers know its was an ad. The article mentions that three years ago, a similar trend started with blogs, but the posts were not clearly marked as ads so a lot of people were against the idea.</p>
<p>Even though the tweets are clearly marked as adds, some people are against the idea, because the ads would spoil the &#8220;authentic dialogue&#8221; on Twitter.  But I think sometimes the only difference between an ad and a hearty recommendation is the label. We all tweet recommendations  - I usually tweet about the podcasts I listen to. While I&#8217;m not against the idea of tweeting ads (and even would consider looking into signing up if I needed the money) I know I would not purposely click on a link from someone I know if I knew it was an ad beforehand.</p>
