As adsense becomes the most popular publisher program for Price per Click advertising, flaws and disadvantages still exist. Since its inception advertisers have chosen to advertise in search because they felt that visitors would be less targeted. This is a genuine concern and one that makes perfect sense. If you are visiting a website, and notice an advert then the chances are you are not particularly concentrating on its content.

Adsense has also become so popular that people can distinguish them from other adverts. Therefore people may choose to ignore them without even paying them a thought. This has been a hot topic discussed by Bloggers and one that could contain a lot of truth. Many have blamed Google for this, and their decision to include text that says “ads by Google” beneath the advert.

Many publishers also fail to ever gain the revenues they anticipated when starting the program. Those only gaining 30 – 40 visitors a day to their website would be unlikely to earn even one dollar a day. Many advertisers talk of rates such as 1.5%- 5% for traffic to click conversion, whilst only gaining around $0.10 per click. The maths doesn’t work out great, but you can hardly blame advertisers or Google if you are not bringing enough traffic. The key is to bring targeted traffic to your website that are likely to click on adverts, however it is said that it may be easier on other programs which allow figures such as 75% share of advertising revenues for publishers.

Another disadvantage in adsense is that it has almost become tacky. Its appearance on websites that generally appear to be designed in a DIY fashion has lead people to associate them inextricably. This can only be tackled through adsense evolving to be more attractive to the bigger brands, whilst those who currently use adsense are restricted.

Google Adsense also has to tackle the issue of click fraud which is anticipated to count for over 15% of click through rate in content. This has meant that advertiser’s who have been particularly affected, have moved away to other programs or have restricted their advertising to search.

This has meant that there is less competition in content and therefore smaller revenues for publishers. Publisher’s who previously had high yielding ads, are now having to alter their content to ensure they get any adverts at all. This has largely been the fault of the publishers themselves however the issue is one that; if not addressed could bring adsense to its knees.

Google Adsense also has the disadvantage of not paying enough for their search program. Other similar programs pay higher rates, and if publishers decide to go elsewhere then problems will occur for advertisers and publishers alike. Although Google fail to pay enough for search another major problem with Adsense is that it does not have a powerful database of graphic adverts. Many advertisers prefer showing graphically drive advertisements, however this has yet to materialise. As several other programs exist for PPC graphic distribution problems could occur.

Whilst this may not be a problem for all publishers, many complain that the adverts within their site do not change, so their repeat visitors fail to see fresh adverts so therefore fail to visit them. This is a problem which could be addressed through making adverts rotate. However if adverts rotate then how will that be linked with advertisers paying a rate per click? These are all problems which Google has to address to ensure that Adsense remains the market leader.

Adwords on the other hand also has major advantages, and remains the best in the market. It’s CPC rates can be chosen by the advertisers so that even when they feel that they are not getting the results they expect they can lower their prices whilst still using the service.

Whilst many issues remain with adsense the program still remains the most popular amongst publishers, whilst Google Adwords remains the most popular amongst advertisers; with a database of over 140,000 Adwords will remain on top for the time to come.

Next, you’ll notice the number of clicks.  This refers to the number of times “your ads” were clicked on.

Page click through rate or CTR is in the next column shown as a percentage. It represents the percentage of the time an ad was clicked on after viewing your page.

Page eCPM which stands for effective cost per thousand impressions.  It is calculated by dividing total earnings by the number of page impressions in thousands.

Don’t be intimidated by these statistics.  The bottom line, your earnings, is what really counts.  As you become more familiar with Google Adsense, statistics will become like second nature.  First, just start.

A really crucial component in the  acceptance of AdSense is that it has been really easy for publishers to get the adverts on their web site as promptly as conceivable.

Last week, the interesting speaker in class briefly talked about the online application/tools of  AdSense and AdWords, and a quick run-through of these, as well as some related issues, will be the topic of today’s blog.

AdSense was an ad serving application run by Google, where website owners could enroll to enable text, image and video advertisements on their websites. These advertisements were administered by Google and generated revenue on either a per-click or per-impression basis.

The application was actually discontinued last year and superseded by DoubleClick, which was quickly snatched by Google after the huge potential of the application was revealed. This was solidly underlined by the $3.1 billion price tag! As an ironic twist, Microsoft actually tried to stall the acquisition on grounds of monopolistic effects – something quite hilarious considering the myriad of similar accusations against, well, Microsoft. DoubleClick, however, has not been without its problems; it has been linked to spy ware as cookies are tracked and it is therefore even considered “malware” by several antivirus programs. Additionally, DoubleClick was accused of misleading the consumer by proposing an, in effect, useless opt-out option of the tracking feature. Nonetheless, it continues to strive as a more or less independent subsidiary of Google and churns out some interesting products, especially for advertising and media companies to allow their clients to traffic, target, deliver, and report on their interactive advertising campaigns.

The other tool mentioned in class was AdWords – the grand flagship of Google’s online advertising, bringing in a staggering $21 billion in revenue in 2008 alone.

It is in relation to this that we see the currently ubiquitous Pay-Per-Click advertising model mentioned several times in my earlier blogs. The product has been developed extensively and is now relatively simple for anyone to operate and includes a suite of tools to enhance a website and monitor traffic. Despite of its huge success, there have also been a few glitches with the product, both in the form of trademark law suits (e.g. American Blind vs. Google and Rescuecom Corp vs. Google), patent infringements, and click fraud. The latter especially marred the reputation for and was settled for $90 million.

Nevertheless, the success of Google currently seems relentless and a plethora of sub-industries has appeared to cater for the increasing need of companbies needing to access all the people using the search engine. Included in such sub-industries are thousands of SEO and SEM specialists, as well as companies designing entire online campaigns to tap into the full potential of the online consumers.  The interesting aspect here is that, as Google increases the range of products offered directly to the companies, the intermediaries have to offer even more specialized and tailor-made solutions. It is currently not sure what the market for these will be in the future, but for now, it appears to be a lucrative market. A couple of examples of such intermediate companies are www.marketiniano.com as mentioned in class, as well as the even more interesting company www.guavamedia.com, which has received some attention in Scandinavia for having greatly increased the value of the companies in their portfolios. Apart from offering a complete overhaul of all online and branding issues of a company, Guava Media undertakes the innovative “Pay for Performance” solution where a company only pays for the actual sales realized as a consequence of an online campaign as opposed to the simple “pay-per-click” or “pay-per-lead” models.

 The only question is, how long it will be before such services merely become a standard part of the already rapidly expanding range of B2B and B2C offerings by Google…

Like anything else, you’ll get out of Google Adsense what you put into it.  The following optimization tips can help you grow your Google Adsense dollars:

Write interesting content and write every day.

Have more than one site.  The more sites you have, the more ads have the potential
to get clicked.

Set up channels and monitor your statistics across all sites.  If one site is performing
poorly, consider changing the content or the ad layout.  Experiment!

Change the ad layout and notice which layout works the best for you.  There are
many different layout options and there’s no way you can know going in which
one will perform the best.

If you’re blogging, writingup.com has a list of profitable topics.  They state that
you don’t have to write on those topics but  you might give it a try or at least plug
some of them in to the search engines.

Google different key words and phrases and notice how much and what kinds of content and ads you see.

Este verano, durante una estancia en Guatemala, recuerdo que mi compañera de viaje me comentó que toda la información y publicidad que estaba recibiendo a través de Internet estaba  relacionada con dicho país.

En la pasada sesión de e-Marketing entendí que aquella anécdota no había sido fruto de la casualidad. Ni tampoco es casualidad que esta tarde buscando en Google una imprenta on-line para la producción de flyers se me haya abierto una cookie de “Vistaprint, crea una impresión profesional”; ni que buscando información sobre Los Ángeles se me haya abierto inmediatamente otra cookie de “Rumbo: Vuelos, Hoteles y Viajes”.

El responsable de todo esto es el AdSense de Google. Hasta hace poco, este servidor se limitaba a publicar anuncios por contenido o por ubicación de página. Sin embargo, el pasado Marzo, Google se inició en el mundo de la publicidad Behavioral Targeting con AdSense, una técnica de segmentación en base a la navegación de los usuarios.

En función de los resultados de sistemas avanzados que almacenan los contenidos buscados por los usuarios, cuánto tiempo dedican a ellos, con qué frecuencia los consultan, etc., se va conformando un perfil de usuario. A partir de estos perfiles, los sistemas de Behavioral Targeting identifican segmentos con perfiles homogéneos para dirigirse a ellos de manera más eficiente.

Se supone que, segmentando, se consigue una situación beneficiosa para ambas partes: los usuarios reciben sólo publicidad relevante y las empresas pueden focalizar esfuerzos concentrándose en segmentos rentables que permitan ahorrar costes.

Sin embargo, podría ser que no se diera ninguno de estos beneficios. ¿Qué pasa si el sistema aprende que a mí me gusta el grupo musical Coldplay, pero yo no quiero estar recibiendo constantemente anuncios sobre ellos? ¿No se saturará al usuario? ¿No sigue siendo mejor que se publiquen sólo anuncios en base al contenido buscado, y así asegurar que los anuncios son relevantes para los intereses del usuario en ese momento?

El uso más y más omnipresente de la red para encontrar información dio la luz a nuevos métodos de hacer publicidad.  Un nuevo mercado de la publicidad es abierto, donde anunciantes y proveedores de espacio interactuan para traer las informaciones/anuncios al público.

Como siempre Google era uno de los primeros que sacó beneficios de la oportunidad.  El lanzamiento de Google AdWords/AdSense fue un éxito muy importante.  El principio es simple.  Los anunciantes se inscriben en AdWords para que su sitio aparece sobre páginas relevantes.  A la inscripción, dan algunas palabras claves, o tags,  relativos a sus productos o servicios.  Los internautas que buscan estas palabras o visitan páginas que contienen estas palabras, verán el anuncio aparecer.  Al otro lado, los webmasters pueden vender espacio sobre sus páginas.  Se inscriben en AdSense.  La aplicación analiza el contenido de las páginas y encuentra los anuncios sumitidos en AdWords que sean lo más similares a este contenido.

El concepto es simple y permite alcanzar los consumidores potenciales fácilmente, ahorrando los costes del estudio de mercado.  Por eso, es muy atractivo para los pequeñas empresas que no tienen un gran presupuesto para la publicidad.  Google identifica el público objetivo para ellas; sólo pagan si los internautas hacen clic sobre su anuncio; si todavía no tienen una página web, Google les ayuda a creer una donde se puede comprar el producto o servicio.

El éxito es tan considerable que el competidor de siempre de Google, es decir Yahoo!, lanzó rápidamente despues  su propia herramienta de publicidad contextual “Yahoo! Publisher Network”.  El principio es muy similar y encuentra muchos usarios también.

How Can I Make Sure That My Account Will Not Be Disabled?

Google Adsense Program Policies make no allowances for deceptive practices.  The most important thing a publisher can do to ensure the integrity of their site is to be aware of what is happening on your site.

Google has made it abundantly clear not to click on your own ads or ask others to do so.  But what about practices a publisher may not purposely carry out?

Make sure that ads associated with Google never appear in an unrequested pop-up.  Don’t be talked into purchasing traffic for your site that may contain adware.

Respect the Google trademarks.  Don’t use any Google trademarks or logos without their consent.

Don’t change the Adsense code.  If you’re a pro at html, don’t assume you can add your own code.  If you’re new to html, simply copy and paste the offered code. Don’t mess with it.

Provide a good environment for advertisers and a positive user experience.  Don’t try to be deceptive in any way.  Google’s rules may sound strict, but believe me, protecting the integrity of the Google Adsense Program is in your best interest as well as Google’s.  After all, a positive, honest Google Adsense program means more money for all of us.
