I have always had a soft spot for archaeology, Egyptology, and all things ancient but have never had the time to read and research as much as I would like,  so when the opportunity to review The Shadow King arose I was very excited to say the least!  It has been a long time since I had read anything of substance on the subject, especially about Tutankhamun, well since I had visited the Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs exhibit at the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia in 2005.  I was hoping that the Shadow King would be a great re-introduction to this mysterious ancient king and maybe provide some additional information I hadn’t encountered before, but it was much, much more!

Framed around the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb in 1922 and the subsequent research on his mummy through the next 90 years, Marchant branches out to give us a snapshot of the evolution of Egyptology, archaeology as a whole, and forensic anthropology.  This story flows in a very accessible, easy to read narrative that gives the readers an overview of the evolution of the science behind studying ancient Egypt.  From the days of treasure hunting Europeans to more scientifically minded Egyptian nationals, Marchant tells a story of what would now be considered mistreatment of artifacts to the careful analysis of hard data.

Not dry in the slightest, the story of these mummies, their discovery, and analysis (especially Tutankhamun himself) is fraught with politics, in-fighting, and a myriad of different stories about his life and death.  We see how after his undisturbed 3,000 year rest, Tut’s mummy became a media sensation almost overnight, leading to two different waves of “Tutmania” in the 1970s and 2000s.   Learn how changes in forensics from basic autopsy to DNA analysis have taken Tut from an 18 year old murder victim to a buck-toothed, club-footed, disease-ridden invalid, to a strong charioteer and general and then back again as Egyptologists attempt to interpret their data.

As the story unfolds, Marchant does an excellent job of keeping interest alive, providing an excellent balance between the modern analysis of the mummies and the intrigue behind the scenes that has gone on non-stop from Howard Carter through Zahi Hawass and beyond.  She is able to paint vivid images of the work and research, as well as the conditions of the mummies and how in the end scientists have found Tutankhamun’s embalming to be rather unique.  All of this was of great benefit to me as my review copy was on the Kindle and I didn’t have the benefit of the reference images until the very end.

I highly recommend The Shadow King to anyone who even has a passing interest in Ancient Egypt, archaeology, or forensic science.  It pulls together the ups and downs of scientific research and interpretation that reads at times with the intrigue of a thriller while still staying based in the fact.  The reader is able to reach their own conclusions, especially in the area of ancient DNA analysis where even those involved in the research admit there is an “all or nothing” approach to its acceptance.  The Shadow King has rekindled my interest and love of Ancient Egypt and can only hope that as politics in the region settle, more research and progress will be made before too long!

I’ve listened to the concern of many a pastor about people leaving the church once they hit adulthood, and I’ve thought many times about why this happens. I won’t give a set timeline for my responses (since this is my first post in 5 months), but I want to explore these reasons for leaving the church, how they relate to me and the people I know, and of course, why I haven’t left.

1. This is not a love triangle book! Nor is there any cheating. I’ve gotten lots of questions about that, so I felt compelled to let you know right off the bat.
2. The original title of EA was With Your Heart. My friend Brett, who’s an author and screenwriter, teased me mercilessly about it. And I mean mercilessly. To the point that I’d be at work and get a random text from him saying something like, “It really might be the worst title ever” or “My friend’s kid has a Winnie the Pooh book called “Pooh Gets Stuck” – still a better title than “With Your Heart.”  (yes, I LOL’ed) Eventually I caved and changed the title, although I do miss getting those texts.
3. I can actually play “Colorblind” by Counting Crows on the piano; the chords and notes mentioned are all accurate. I’m obsessed with the song and taught myself how to play it a couple of years ago. To be fair though, Andie’s story of learning how to play it is way better than mine.
4. I’m part Greek, and my grandmother could speak it fluently. I can still say a few things, but I had to call in reinforcements to help with the Greek translation of Andie’s mother’s advice. (If you plug it into a translation program online, it gives you the actual Greek letters, not the phonetic spelling, so I was totally lost.) I ended up contacting a childhood friend through facebook, and he was nice enough to help me out.  (Thank you, Gus!)

Day three arrived with me helpless in the body bag . The bag was removed but only so i could be given my early morning spanking and flogging. What a way to wake up in the morning: so good!

As a festival steward, you often get some spare time between events to go to talks and explore authors/genres you wouldn’t normally come into contact with. Now I don’t really read biographies, I tend to stick with fiction generally, but there was something so utterly compelling about Jane Dunn and the subject matter of her latest book that led me to discover more of du Maurier.

Now I simultaneously hold my hands up and hang my head in shame that despite being a huge fan of Rebecca it was also the only Daphne du Maurier I had read. So in response to Jane Dunn and her talk on the lives of the du Maurier sisters, I looked through my family bookshelves in the hope of rectifying my Daphne-ignorance and quickly came across My Cousin Rachel.

In My Cousin Rachel du Maurier builds up a feeling of the sinister and its accompanying claustrophobia to create impending tension, reflective of her style in Rebecca. She plays effortlessly with concepts of naivety, infatuation and manipulation and by choosing to narrate her novel in the first person, the audience is given a closed, biased (and ever-changing) view of events which makes the concept of truth unstable. Daphne at her best!

The young Philip Ashley’s narrative voice becomes more malleable by his encounters with his auntie-in-law (and cousin) Rachel and this use of unreliable narration reminded me strongly of another favourite Gothic novel – Henry James’ The Turn of the Screw. With emotion and opinion towards other characters constantly evolving, the feeling of certainty is completely absent from the novel. Set in du Maurier’s favourite Cornwall, the atmosphere is comparable to being on a cliff in dense fog – you never quite know where the edge is or even if you want to know!

The intricacies of suspicion fuel the narrative and du Maurier enhances this with her intensely atmospheric settings, switching from serene Cornwall to the beauty of Florence and back again. The psychological game being played throughout the novel is subtle and masterfully laid out, resulting in a haunting finale that will remain with you long after the pages have been shut.

(I would also like to say a BIG thank you to Jane Dunn for reigniting my love of DdM – I can’t wait to get my hands on her book Daphne du Maurier and her Sisters: The Hidden Lives of Puffy, Bird and Bing – based on her talk it sounds like the du Maurier sisters had quite a life!)

Thats my lingering memory from the time we spent together,

I met her one Friday night, our eyes met as we both walked to the bar.

She was 10 yards away and side on to me, she was facing towards the bar as I walked towards it but facing towards her left side.
