The second candle on the advent wreath is sometimes called the Bethlehem candle, and while I don’t expect to ever go to Bethlehem myself, I think most people have a place they associate with Christmas.  For me it’s my Aunt Irene’s house in North Tonawanda.  Aunt Irene’s house has for me always seemed just a little magical, maybe it’s her collection of gnomes on top of the TV, or maybe it’s the gigantic stuffed panther on the guest bed set out for me, or maybe it’s just the refinement that a house acquires over years of use.  We only celebrated there perhaps five times before a close encounter of the snow bank kind convinced us to visit upstate New York in warmer weather, but when I think of where Christmas is I think it will always be that house.

Semplice e geniale. Null’altro.

Há um recuo na advocacia. Temos visto um êxodo de bons profissionais deixando a advocacia privada para prestarem concursos público. Noto que, antes de buscarem o emprego fixo e salário certo, a maioria desses colegas buscam a satisfação de trabalhar com o direito social, longe das obrigações imposta pela advocacia empresarial. Os grandes escritórios hoje são empresas, e seus advogados pertencem a uma linha fordista de produção de peças jurídicas. Traga a acusação que lhe mostro a tese que será recortada e colada com o nome de sua empresa. Patético, mas é isso que o mercado exige.

E os escritórios, tendo a sua disposição um sem número de recém-formados  graças a loucura paulorenatiana (de Paulo Renato de Souza, ministro da educação dos anos 90), no qual faculdades foram criadas para satisfazer anseios comerciais, esquecendo de necessidades pedagógicas, conseguem pagar ridículos R$ 800,00 à R$ 2.000,00 por uma jornada de 12h de trabalho. Período esse sem garantias trabalhistas, como hora extras, fundo de garantia, FGTS e afins.

Contratar advogado tornou-se um ótimo negócio. Você tem a sua disposição um escravo do direito, que trabalha quase de graça com o aval da OAB e do sindicato. Desafio a me dizer qual escritório encara a lei com a verdade merecida, e contrata seus advogados pela CLT, ao invés das falcatruas de “associados”, “sócios” ou “autônomos”? E desses poucos, quais realmente pagam as horas extras como devem ser pagas?

Envergonho-me de saber que advogados temem defender seus direitos quando o assunto é a relação de trabalho entre seus colegas e os escritórios. Não vejo nosso presidente da ordem proferir qualquer manifestação nesse sentido, tampouco o sindicato se preocupar com a questão. Aliás, sabiam que os advogados paulistas tem sindicato? Não, ninguém sabia. Talvez só eles saibam.

O que falta para o Ministério Público do Trabalho empreender uma força tarefa para aplicar sanções em todos os escritórios a encararem a atual condição da advocacia, e porem um fim nessa hipocrisia de contratação que objetiva somente a sonegação de impostos e direitos? Os D. colegas da promotoria poderiam começar por aqui, na lista de escritório do site jurídico Migalhas. Destes, eu verifico que quase nenhum cumpre a regra da contratação e tem seus advogados como empregados como verdadeiramente são.

Caso o colega de ofício se encontra nessa grave situação trabalhista mentirosa, conclamo que faça uma denúncia (anônima, se preferir) no site do Ministério Público do Trabalho, e exponha o que ocorre em seu escritório. A página para a denúncia é essa aqui, e quem sabe depois que dois os três escritórios forem visitados furtivamente pelos fiscais do trabalho os demais tomam vergonha na cara e deixam de angariar  fundos com o suor escravo do advogado que constrói o sucesso da firma.

¿Que un día tienes un día malo? Siempre puede ser peor o lo que es lo parecido, siempre habrá alguien que le haya ido peor.

¿Y a qué viene esto? Un mal día que tuve unido a una búsqueda absurda por internet me llevo hasta esta página Asco de vida ¡aunque podría ser peor! o en la abreviación que le dan ellos “ADV” para referirse a todo aquello que te produciría el pensamiento de “que asco de vida”.

¿Y de qué va la página esta? Pues precisamente de mucha gente contando su asco de vida. Un resumen en apenas dos o tres líneas de alguna cosa que les ha pasado. Unos escriben adv, otros lo comentan y oye que para echarse unas risas está genial, a veces no sé que son más buenos si los propios advs o los comentarios que dejan los usuarios que lo leen.

Por supuesto, este tipo de páginas da lugar a que cada uno se pueda inventar su “experiencia” pero bueno, eso ya es otro tema.

Os dejo un par de ejemplos de advs de la página, los hay de todo tipos:

• Inocentes…

Hoy, he sacado un 0 en un examen, en el que, por primera y única vez en mi vida, estudié como un matao. Revisando el examen, no encontré ningún fallo. La respuesta de mi profesora ha sido clara y contundente: “seguro que has copiado”. ADV

• Crudas como la vida misma…

Hoy, mientras miraba si el escaparate de mi zapatería estaba bien organizado, se ha acercado un abuelo y me ha dicho: “No compres aquí, ahí al lado en la esquina los zapatos valen la mitad”. La tienda de la esquina es de chinos y me está arruinando, yo sólo vendo calzado nacional. ADV

Just a quick update to mark a milestone…

I am 100% certain now that God has put me in Advertising for a reason, and that this is the path I am meant to take in life (or at least in the short term) because lately I’ve been receiving many affirmations. Yet – to my dear friends who truly care – you don’t have to worry about me becoming proud and complacent over this new turn of events because I know that it is not achieved through any feat of my own (^__^)

Instead, I feel truly honoured that God honours my passions and have poured His blessings unto them. This probably sounds a little odd, and even a little more me-centric than God-centric. But I feel that if God has made plans for us, then He has also wired us to be passionate about certain things? So when we choose to acknowledge these interests and believe in the greater good behind them, God honours our choices (obedience?) with blessings. And these blessings in turn work to help us glorify Him.

Does that make sense?

It hasn’t been easy, but I am so glad that I didn’t try to be my usual stubborn self with Him. 2 weeks ago when things were getting really tough, and as I was bothered by some (what I deem to be wayward) doctrines, I returned to the book of Hebrews in the Bible intending to study it thoroughly. I turned to it because to me, this is where the gospel of Grace has been laid out as truth in the clearest way. And thanks to this inspired move, I remembered to rest.

A couple years ago, Pastor Prince made a very bold move. He declared 2007 the year of rest. I call it a bold move because it was anti-Singaporean. Nobody in their right mind on our pragmatic little island would dare to put all their struggles aside and imagine a life where you don’t have to work to get somewhere. Pastor Prince also showed us that it was not to be a “sluggish” rest. When the Word of God talks about rest, it is more like a stilling of the heart, made possible through confidence that is built upon faith and hope.

In faith and hope, we rest in Jesus’ finished work on the cross.

We do not want you to become lazy, but to imitate those who through faith and patience inherit what has been promised. (Hebrews 6:12)

And so the worry-wart learns not to worry… It’s also why I love Hebrews 6:19 so much! We all know what an anchor does, it steadies the ship. Similarly, in times of tumult, hope steadies the heart, brings it to rest. Anchored, I do not get lost in the tossing waves.

College tends to make me forget this. In fact, a few times this semester, I caught myself literally forgetting to breathe while thinking about what has to be done. But always at the end of the day, when I have resigned to the fact that some things are virtually impossible to accomplish, comes the best part of this cycle – out of desperation I’ll just commit everything into His hands. And as I sit back and rest, the peace that transcends all understanding will wash over me without fail.

In this relaxed state of mind, and with God working through me, I produce my best works.

However I no longer want to go through these cycles of desperation-and-dependence, because I got to wondering about how much more could be accomplished if I can be in that state of mind from the get-go! This is likely easier said than done though…

But I’ll try, and let you know how it goes (^_^)

Delicious Eva-flavored Doritos

In honor of the first Rebuild of Evangelion movie being released on DVD in the U.S., I thought I’d post my thoughts of the dub. My dub review comes from a theatrical viewing of the dub a few months ago, and is not representative of the DVD. But they should be identical anyway.

First of all, I completely loathed the original Evangelion dub (and I hated the original movie dubs even more). It had one of the worst assembled casts of all time. Worse than the people in “Manos: The Hands of Fate.” Not to mention one of the shittiest directors, Matt Greenfield, ever. Basically, he just cast a bunch of his no-talent friends, and had them ham it up. The original dub is on par with what you’d find in a middle school drama class. It is fucking awful. A testament to why you should never watch a dub. And just in case any of you think I “hate all dubs,” let me explain something else. There are some anime dubs that I loved, and watch those shows exclusively in English (e.g. Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Outlaw Star, and Fullmetal Alchemist — just to name a few). Anyway, my expectations for the Rebuild of Evangelion dub were extremely low. I was expecting a turd on celluloid. So, how did it hold up?

Shinji – Spike Spencer performed much better than he ever did in the TV series. It seems like he has grown quite a lot as an actor. His line delivery was spot on almost all of the time. He embodied the role quite well, and was very convincing. The only complaint I have is that his screams are somewhat comical, and when Eva-01 got blasted by Ramiel, his screams were so ridiculous they actually made me laugh out loud. I don’t think the other theater-goers were very happy with me.

Misato – Allison Keith-Shipp did a good job, too. While I still think her acting can be a little weak, and her voice shrill, for the most part she was fine. She had the proper amount of gravity during dramatic scenes, and the right amount of lightheartedness in the fun scenes. She was probably the person I hated the most in the original dub, and I expected her to ruin the entire movie. Fortunately, she has improved a lot as an actor since her original performance in the TV series. Not bad, not bad at all.

Rei – Her voice actress was excellent. She was able to be quiet and solemn, without sounding fake and hoarse like Amanda Winn-Lee (the original english Rei). She doesn’t have that many lines, but her delivery for all of them was perfect. Without a doubt, she was one of the highlights of the dub.

Gendo – Why is Crispin Freeman* not voicing this character? Gendo was all right, but not too memorable. He came off as more of a bastard than the previous dub actor, which is definitely a good thing. Still, there was something lacking in his performance. Maybe he came across as too emotionally involved, where Gendo should seem detached. Again, a good performance, but not amazing.     *Rumor has it that Robin Williams, a self-proclaimed Evangelion fan, also auditioned for the role of Gendo. While it might have been odd hearing a big star on an anime dub, I think he would have been much better than the person they went with. At least he would have sounded different than the actor who played Fuyutsuki.

Fuyutsuki – He sounds too much like Gendo, and sometimes it can be hard to tell which character is speaking. I’m apathetic to his performance as he does not have much of a presence in this movie.

Ritsuko – Sort of flat sounding. She had more of the detached voice that Gendo should have had. I think her actress, while good, could have been better. There’s just something about her voice that doesn’t quite fit the character.

Toji – The best Toji so far. At first I didn’t like his voice, but it grew on me. By the end, I thought he fit the role well.

Kensuke – I think that Greg Ayres did an awesome job. Even though he is omnipresent in anime these days, he did fine. His higher pitched, almost puberty-cracking voice was perfect for the role. He had the right amount of enthusiasm and nerdiness to make Kensuke memorable.

Keel – Although he only shows up in Monolith form, his voice is menacing as hell. Great choice.

Kaworu – He seemed all right, but his part was too brief to make any real judgment.

Bridge Bunnies – They sort of just blend into the scenes, and nobody stood apart from the others.

While I don’t think this cast will ever surpass the original Japanese actors, Funimation did a damn good job. This time they had a real director instead of motherfucking Matt Greenfield, and that payed off in spades. Spike and Allison have had years to improve their skills, and with a competent director, were able to turn in great performances. Overall, the dub was good, and I can entertain the idea of watching it again in the future. While the original Japanese is still the best, this English dub is a vast improvement over the ADV dub.

And also, it rocked watching Evangelion in a movie theater, on the big screen.

Verdict: Good

Google sigue expandiéndose, es obvio, pero en ocasiones hay pequeñas piedrecitas graciosas en el camino, como lo que ha pasado con el nuevo lenguaje de programación que han desarrollado, Go.
Al parecer, un hombre había estado desarrollando durante 10 años otro lenguaje llamago Go!, por lo que procedió a quejarse.

Los comentarios a su queja en su mayoría son un cachondeo, y la situación la podríamos describir de la siguiente manera:

Hoy, no bueno, hace unos días Google me ha robado el nombre para su nuevo lenguaje y yo llevo desarrollando el mio 10 años. Lo malo no es eso, es que me fui a quejar y se han reído todos de mí. ADV

A ver en qué acaba esta historia.

all’accostamento di colori complementari. questi scatti in particolare fanno parte della serie Crinoline Flowers.

l’impostazione moda si nota molto. il suo è un tentativo di attraversare i confini tra moda e arte. certo è che moda e arte possono essere sì considerate due cose vicine, ma non quando si parla di scatti commerciali dove è il prodotto che deve essere al centro dell’attenzione, e non l’estro e lo stile troppo personale del fotografo (a meno che non si parli di nomi davvero importanti).

ammetto che quest’ultima possibilità non mi dispiace affatto, ma ovviamente gli ambienti, commerciale ed artistico, hanno fini completamente diversi.

Ohhhh! wat’s happening out? As expected Apple topped the mobile industry and was confirmed when Nokia released its Q3 profits recently. With a strong competitor Nokia is focusing it’s new arrival Nokia N900, the first phone to run on linux’s maemo operating system. Analysts are expecting Nokia to gain its grounds with this new arrival. Eventhough this looks as a healthy point for Nokia, will the consumers go in to purchase a mobile with a new operating system? Infact sales will double during Thanks Giving and Christmas, and Nokia lovers are expecting a Thanks Giving offer from Nokia. We might have to wait and see if Nokia tops the mobile world with its N900 release. I always wanted a mobile phone with a mobile-webcam facility, so i can see the opposite person to whom i’m talking to. Ofcourse this is my dream, but i might have to wait so long to see this in real. Will the mobile manufacturer’s go for new ideas? Nokia can start getting new ideas from all Nokia lover’s by conducting an idea competition just as DELL is attracting more users.

According to NASSCOM, IT sector is expected to grow by 5-7 p.c this fiscal. Patni Computers has signed a term sheet with one company and the acquisition is expected to happen by February. Following Patni, HCL Tech is looking at acquisitions.

Soon cloud enabled IT will be able to help in heath care through tele-medicine, where patients in remote area can consult a doctor via telepresence infrastructure. In education, Internet can help in imparting affordable education through telepresence and help more and more people complete their primary education and also the secondary education said Padamsree Warrior, CTO, Cisco Telepresence in one of the conference in Bangalore.
