When you begin putting up your very first website – you got to admit that you are green, to the ways

When you begin putting up your very first website – you got to admit that you are green, to the ways of the Internet way of doing things. Most think that once your website is in place, and you’ve got your links in place, you will be “rollin” in money. That would be nice, were it true, however, think how many “Super Affiliates” we there would be. Here is a sampling of what to expect.

Begin at the Begining

At first, there will be excitement, and you’ll have a sense of WOW, look what I’ve done. It is a GRAND thing getting a site up and running. You are now “Online”! This is, however, just the iceberg of your internet marketing experience.

Once you’re website is up and running, you should start thinking, what should I do now? If you are not flush with cash, which a lot of us ARE NOT in the beginning there are still things to do:

1.	Write some articles (free, or can be hired out CHEAP)
2.	Optimize your site for the with good SEO content
3.	Learning how to put Adsense on your site

This does take time and effort. However, starting off, you have TIME to optimize, to write some articles, etc… It’s been said that for about the next six to nine months, Google, and other search engines, may put you in the “Sandbox”. It’s been said that the a Sandbox exists, some say not. Whatever you call it, you will get some degree of dormancy on your site if you stick with it.

I believe that there may well be a pre-determined time of six months or so before you see any real uprise in unique clicks, traffic. There may be a number of reasons for this:

1.	It’s a way to shield the “Internet community” against scamming sites – I guess that these sites have an online life of about six months before people kick them off. Unfortunately, it takes only one person to feel the blunt of a scam, before talk within the internet forums begins.

2.	Websites go up and down on a continual basis. Search engines are continually looking at saving time and money. After six months or nine months, if you are still up and running, you are paying your dues, and they may begin to see you as a serious online marketer.

What should you do during that period of six to nine months?

Number one, because you have this information, don’t get frustrated and give up. Albeit, the only clicks you may see, at first, are your own, however, that will change.

Number two, begin positioning yourself, so that when your “proving time” with the search engines ends, you have the quality content, and the quality products to begin to fly. That means, getting your name out, articles, blogs, etc… to the masses, and learning to utilize Adsense.

And when you get some spare change, try your hand at advertising on Adwords.

To start with the learning curve is steep, but not insurmountable. Take this time to read, study, find good ebooks on the topic, and experiment with your research. These are important steps to moving your learning curve to, “the expert level”.

In Conclusion, your website is just a small part, but a significant part, of becoming an Affiliate Marketer. Another important element, is, persistence, time and effort, work, and marketing. Finally, if you still have the drive, after that initial exhilaration of becoming an online entrepreneur goes away, then you’ll be on your way to making it.

There is a way to avoid a lot of the mistakes and pitfalls, CLICK HERE and find out how to become a “super affiliate”, this is FREE info, but it won’t/can’t stay free forever.

Friends,

This morning I have decided to talk about this issue because it has been something that I have seen ALOT over the years. You know, I myself have tried numerous different companies and failed but in MOST cases it was not the companies fault it was strictly my own. What do I mean by that? Well, at some point you have to stop pointing fingers and reflect on your business strategies and how you are presenting yourself to potential associates and customers. It wasn’t until really the past couple of years that I was able to do so. In this short blog, I’ll show you exactly where I went wrong and how YOU can avoid making the same mistakes and begin seeing the success you crave!

Listen, mlm is not a “get quick rich” thing. It never has been and it never will. LOL….funny thing is most people know this but we are blown away with enthusiasm that we think that we’ll be rolling in money come Monday morning. Monday morning arrives and your bank account is still sitting at $0.00. Your upset and frustrated…beginning to feel discouraged.

I was short on money and the end of the month was knocking at the backdoor. I kept telling myself, “Well, if I just get my 3, who in turn gets their 3, then my monthly membership is paid for!”

You know it’s funny because I just thought the failure at Mary Kay was due to my own inability to apply makeup to someones face and choose what colors would work best for their skin tone. Very different from my perspective on things I thought I’d be able to do at the start of my business venture. Listen, I tried. As a matter of fact, my very first party, I had about 7 close friends of mine attend and ended up selling about $749.00 in product. That’s great… BUT… that only helped to cover my initial cost on inventory. Before, prejudgment sets in…let me just say… I had been working steadily every night after work creating presentations, fliers, demos…

…but something was missing, and I couldn’t figure out what?????????

After about a year, I quit MaryKay and blamed MaryKay for all of my headaches and frustration. I took some time off from the mlm industry and pursued a career in Radiology. Then, one day I had went to lunch with my mother, Sherril, and she had just got involved with this company that she swore up and down was the way to go. Her excitement haunted me for about a week, and I decided, “You know what! I’m gonna give it another shot!” And so I did.

Here’s where my leap of faith got me! With this new company I was able to build a down-line of about 9 people in a 3 week time frame. Now, I was excited because with MaryKay, I had not brought ANYONE into the business. However, I had several customers who bought the product. I was astonished. I thought, “I have found the light! I’m gonna make this work!”

However, I kinda ran into luck, I should say, because all 9 of those people were simply recruited directly from my old MaryKay business customer base. It had taken me quite a long time to create a trusting relationship with them in MaryKay. But with having done so, I knew that all it would take from me is a phone to them letting them know that “I have found the secret that we’ve been seeking for so long”…

…The month came and went and as time went by I found myself backpedaling into the same frustrations I had had in the past. I was unable to generate enough leads to grow my business and create that residual income I wanted.

So, I eventually left that company as well.

Finally, after so many months of bad luck and wanting to just throw my hands up, I began searching the internet. I wound up meeting a couple extraordinary people who showed me what I was doing was all WRONG! I had learned that in order to succeed in absolutely any Multilevel profession you need to be able to build rapport and work consistently day after day.

Wow!

All this time I thought that I just didn’t have the magic touch. What I was lacking was not enthusiasm and hard work it was simply rapport.

I had spent so much time marketing my BUSINESS through advertisements and expos searching for those SIGN ME UP TODAY prospects, that I was totally missing out of one of the most basic steps to growing my network marketing business and that is the ability to build a long lasting relationship with my potential clients.

I am going to be straight forward with you here…the key to success in MLM is not locked away for only certain eyes to discover. It is within you! This is a long term, relationship driven opportunity. No one is going to join a business with someone that they may know little to nothing about. You just can’t grow your business that way… it DOES NOT work!

When I had the revolutionary eye opening experience and realized that all I need to do to grow my business was to actually learn to interact and bond with others….my business literally exploded! Within 3 months I was able to grow my organization into more than 900 active distributors and working at it part time. I was using the warm market resources that I still had and attend weekly and monthly meet-up trainings. Occasionally, I would travel to huge seminars and meet with all the top notch gurus of the company and bring back my exclusive one on one interviews to share.

Now, doing things this way was working…please don’t get me wrong! That is until I discovered the internet!

Listen…technology today is totally off the charts when it comes to networking. Now, you’re gonna find people out there that will teach you one click systems that supposedly WORK…let me let you in on a little secret…it’s a total gimmick. As I said, MLM is a relationship driven opportunity. If you wanna succeed and really prosper, you need to be able to connect with others on a more personal level.

The internet itself is one of many tools available to you to help market your business. Now, you have an incredible opportunity to market, anyway you like, to millions globally, at a very fast pace using the internet.

HOWEVER, what you are marketing is no longer your business you are marketing YOU! This may take some time, it is not going to happen over night. Depending on where you stand financially there are a couple different things you could try…

Rollin’ in dough? Try Google Adwords. Now, you are gonna find that you’ll be spending quite a bit of $$$ if you’re not careful. However, if you read up on it and really understand how it works then you can potentially generate alot of leads within your first day. Just do your research and be careful!

Once you have leads, you’ll notice that some will opt in and some won’t. Listen, this isn’t a bad thing! You do not want to spend time and engery on someone that you have to pull teeth to get into your business. All that’s gonna happen is (A) you’ll be their babysitter (B) they’ll be the one’s to run when they don’t see a huge initial paycheck in the mail.

Some other things you need to keep in mind is the fact that you might go on a roller coaster ride when it comes to seeing immediate results. Maybe one week you sign up 5 people and you earn $75 in your affiliate commissions but the following week you have 15 leads and no one has opted into your opportunity or your affiliate programs. This is just part of the GROWING process. Expect it and accept it!

Look, I have personally designed my lead system to allow you to accelerate the process of recruiting representatives 10x’s faster than ever before. You have the ability to build GREAT rapport and True relationships with a MASSIVE audience! It literally closes the door to rejection before it ever has a chance to reach you!

It’s proven and it WORKS!

This is NOT the part where you can click your heals and you are in Hawaii sipping Margaritas. You MUST work it! You Must show that you are able to influence the internet to help grow your business. Let me just say, it’s not that difficult…you CAN do it!

Let me give you an example. Within a month and a half time frame I was about to generate about 6 leads per day and making $25 a day in affiliate commissions. I probably sponsored about 1 person per week. The following month I nearly double! Today, I have far surpassed all of my expectations with my mlm business and I am currently setting new goals to achieve!

Listen, like I said this is NOT overnight success. It takes TIME! First thing’s first, I had to…

Set up my System

Create POA (Plan Of Action)

Be Consistant!

You will work hard, nothing in life is FREE!

You will be put to the test, this is a learning process!

You are on the road to WEALTH!

I need a contract for this next part! Take notes!……………….

*No complaining allowed during the first 2 months of trying to market online. As I stated earlier, this is a process which you are learning. You can’t make money if you are not willing to follow exactly as I have laid out for you to the ‘T’!

*You are NOT alone! I will be there to help you along the way. However, initiative is a MUST! Together we will REDIRECT your business onto the road of SUCCESS!

I spent a chunk of last week telling people about our forthcoming Twitter Sales Leads tool and how it will help them engage with people using Twitter to tweet their needs for products or services.

This feature will be included in our Pro Network membership of WeCanDo.BIZ and not only help you find sales leads amidst the 27 million daily tweets posted on Twitter (source: Pingdom via Brian Solis) but through WeCanDoCRM Social CRM also help you to track them.

Pro Networker, including access to Twitter Sales Leads and the full Social CRM system, costs £19.95 per month. No one I mentioned the price to baulked, possibly because they may be spending many times that on a Cloud/hosted CRM system like Salesforce.com, as well as email marketing from VerticalResponse or Constant Contact. Certainly, in a previous life I have frequently spent over £100 a month on hosted CRM and a separate hosted email marketing system. And that’s before you factor in the cost of the customer data!

All of this got me wondering just where people’s expectations are as far as the cost of a sales lead (CPL – Cost Per Lead). So I decided to draw up some comparisons with methods I have advocated in the past. I’d love to read your comments.

First off, let’s agree what a sales lead is. Or isn’t. It isn’t a line in a file of email addresses you’ve bought off some outfit in Florida compiled specifically for spamming. It isn’t a click on a website. It isn’t a name ina phone directory you think you may be able to sell something to. As I’ve said throughout my career — which has included stints as sales directors as well as 11 years spent running my own companies — there’s no lead without a need. In other words, if someone doesn’t have a reason to buy we should assume they probably won’t (impulse buys only go up to a certain, small, value and don’t happen much in business). So a “real” lead is you engaged in dialogue with someone who has identified they have a reason to buy; a need brought on by suffering some sort business pain in a B2B (business to business) context; and they’ve shared that need with you.

So, some methods of lead generation:

Telesales/telemarketing — CPL £200 – £385
We’re talking outbound ‘phone based campaigns in order to find prospects within a list of contacts. It may be you have those contacts already (they can go out of date quickly) or have brought data in for the purpose. I’m going to assume the latter here, which adds a little to the cost.

Telesales person at £200 – £350/day, depending on the knowledge required to sell the product/solution

100 records required for a day of calling at £0.35 a contact from Corpdata = £35/day

Likely out come of 1 qualified lead from 100 ‘telephone lifts’ (calls made including no connections, voicemails etc.), but a likely 35 ‘meaningful conversations’ (discussion with the correct person where you can realistically determine their need and ability to buy)

Web advertising (banner) — CPL £30 – £50
Here I am talking aboout the sort you see as banners along the top and down the side of websites. I have contacts into a media buying agency who represent a number of information technology vendors that work this way and will pay a pretty penny for the details of someone who has submitted their details as an information request, request for trial or demo or somesuch. Qualified lead? You can’t be sure they have an explicit need which is motivating them to fill out a form, but this method is likely to produce a conversion rate higher than many of the rest. Above is a typical example of what companies pay a supplier of leads from a banner on their site when sourcing through a media buyer.

Web advertising (affiliate) – N/A
We have taken a look at a few affiliate programmes, such as SilverTap, and they tend to work by paying a commission on sales generated from clicks to a website — you’ll have sent them over through a special URL behind a banner. There is typically no cost to join such schemes and 10% commission is fairly typical on a sale, but because it’s tough to attach a specific value to this — and also because in all other methods we’re looking at CPL not Cost Per Sale, we can’t factor this in.

Web advertising (Google Adwords) — CPL £60
This is a far more common way of winning leads for most small businesses because it’s so easy to implement. You go to Google, enter the text for a banner and then state which search terms you want it displayed against. It shows you what each will be worth. Here we’re going to have to make some assumptions but will happily update if someone is willing to share there stats with us.

Typical cost per keyword £1.20

Typical rate of clicks to enquiries of 50:1

Email marketing — CPL £179
This method feels like one of the cheapest and it’s no wonder it’s used by so many small businesses, as an email costs just pennies to send. For our figures here we have factored in the cost of the data again and the cost per mail (typical) of using VerticalResponse, one of the leading email marketing solutions. No doubt there are ways of getting emails cheaper by using less reputable services and by buying in volume, but we’ve assumed here buying in and mailing out to a quality list of 5,000 contacts. Note that once the contact list is purchased that is typically reusable many times over the year, reducing the CPL as more opportunity comes from the existing data. We’re also assuming not ALL click through swill turn into enquiries, but that 1 in 10 will — a higher conversion rate than Adwords because the list will have been part qualified when selected and the email would have better described what’s on offer than a small display ad.

5,000 records at £0.35 a contact from Corpdata = £1,750

5,000 email credits in VerticalResponse at $60 = £35.72

Typical click through rate of 2% = 100 website visits

Typical rate of clicks to enquiries 10:1

Twitter Sales Leads tool — CPL £1
Now I accept we are yet to go live and get any real stats confirmed by customers, but we have been running the Twitter Sales Leads tool in test for a couple of weeks and several of our users have confirmed they have seen a typical list of 60 – 90 leads popping up in the results. Our own research shows that one you take out duplicates caused by retweets, inexact keyword matches etc. then this total list probably comes down to somewhere around 20 – 30 leads that you’d respond to and probably create as Sales Leads in your WeCanDoCRM Social CRM system so you can track through to a sale.

Conclusion
Perhaps it’s predictable we’d come out on top of the comparisons above, but we believe it is still a worthwhile and accurate comparison of the vearious methods open to win new business.

And let’s face it, we wouldn’t be adding Twitter Sales Leads if we didn’t think it represented a great way to grow your business online!

As always, we welcome your comments to just post a reply below, especially if you disagree with any of the above calculations and can provide alternative stats.

Ever since Google launched their AdWords and AdSense services, they took the world of online adverti

Ever since Google launched their AdWords and AdSense services, they took the world of online advertising by storm. Now, Pay Per Click (PPC) advertising is here to stay and it only makes sense that you learn a little bit about it so that you can then decide for yourself whether or not you want to get into it further!

Be warned though: PPC advertising is notoriously difficult to master. There are just so many considerations that need to be made, and trying to wrap your head around all of them is bad enough without also having to worry about the fact that advertising of this kind actually costs money.

In short, you could very well end up paying for something that really doesn’t work out for you at all!

Basically, the system behind AdWords is simple enough: By allowing people to bid on keywords, AdWords will display advertisements of your choice and when they do show up and people click on them, you pay a predetermined sum.

Unfortunately, the tough part of this entire exercise lies in the fact that you’re going to need to not only determine what keywords to bid on, but you’re also going to have to come up with a good advertisement, and make sure that your campaigns aren’t just wasting money for little or no results.

On the flipside, if you’re actually able to master PPC advertising, you’ll find that there’s a whole wealth of options available to you as you should now be able to automate pretty much every aspect of your traffic generation, and free up more time with which you can pursue other endeavors.

To be perfectly honest, getting into PPC advertising without at least a little bit of help can be amazingly difficult. For that reason, it’s probably best that you at least make sure that you understand a little more about the inner workings of AdWords before you actually start on your first campaign.

Or you could just jump right in, so long as you’re willing to accept that the first few weeks or months might involve you operating at a loss while you learn the ropes and ins and outs of PPC advertising.

With AdWords at your fingertips, you’ll be able to guarantee exposure for practically any website, and any endeavor that you might eventually embark on.

Keep trying, and remember that while it might seem like a sacrifice right now, and you might not want to spend that much money learning how to use advertising, in the future whatever you learn now will undoubtedly come in handy.

…or Pay-Per-Click Branding I used Google Adwords for the marketing of the Nuclear Energy Sympo

…or Pay-Per-Click Branding

I used Google Adwords for the marketing of the Nuclear Energy Symposium this fall here at Penn State. We had a $500 budget and ended up using only $369.47 for 1,600 clicks. Clicks are often considered the preliminary goal, meaningful ones the next, while conversions to enrollments the happy ending.

In this particular campaign, the faculty member wanted to market globally. He wanted postcards and emails to be sent to nuclear professionals all over the world. He didn’t care, he said, if they came or not, he just wanted them to know about it. His budget did not even come close to supporting his desires. What he was asking for really, was branding Penn State’s Nuclear Program, his symposium and himself.

Google Adwords to the rescue.

To get these 1,600 clicks, our ad was seen by 1,641,988 people. All these impressions were either nuclear related key word searches or on nuclear content pages. Granted, I am not as schooled as many, but 1.6 million people seeing our name for $369.47 seems like a pretty good deal. Can we calculate any metrics from the branding of PSU and it’s nuclear program from this campaign?

No.

So what does this all mean?

At very least, 1) I did not have to say no to the client, and 2) the client was pleased. 3) Google Adwords found me a way to accomplish something that was otherwise impossible. 4) Next year this client might be more at ease agreeing with my recommendation for something he has never heard of.

I’ll take this small success and stand on it to reach a bit higher next time.

Ade Molajo is a graduate turned entrepreneur most widely known for widely his opposed attempts to launch the first price checker for comparison sites, comparechecker.com.

Is this a real threat?

Google’s impending entry to the price comparison market has been rumored for over a year, I even used it as an argument for the benefit of a comparison site price checker when I was trying to get comparison sites to agree to CompareChecker.

Google recently launched Adwords comparison ads that in their words “lets users compare multiple, relevant offers more easily.”

Basically users are provided with a more relevant set of result on a Google search results page based on the specified feature they would like to compare e.g. a mortage search refined by home value etc.

Some are speculating that this is bad news for the high profile comparison sites (Moneysupermarket.com, Gocompare.com etc.) believing that Google is looking to poach their consumers.

AdWords Comparison Ads are currently restricted to the US mortgage market, but is expected to expand to cover other markets and territories as a direct competitor to price comparison websites.

My Thoughts

The belief that Google will enter any market and dominate it is just sensationalism. Google dominates search- hands down. It has entered several other spheres where there are dominant players and in general even the mighty ”G” falls in line behind other mighty brands who have invested huge sums in developing a presence (Android Vs iPhone, Internet explorer Vs Chrome, Windows Vs Chrome OS).

It could have a serious consequence on the leads generated from ppc and organic search for comparison sites; however, to proclaim this as the end for such sites is ridiculous.

These are large companies and they will use whatever route to market they need in order to get customers. Adwords comparison ads will not all of a sudden get rid of TV, print, social media, radio, email and direct marketing.

Q.13 E-Marketing When I typed the word “Priceline” into the Google Search engine, the US Priceline w

Q.13 E-Marketing

When I typed the word “Priceline” into the Google Search engine, the US Priceline website, www.priceline.com is the first entry that is displayed in the results, as well as a “Sponsored Link” that was displayed just above the first result. The first search entry and other results that are displayed with other pages from the Priceline website are not paid for by Priceline or any other website that is displayed on Google’s search results. These results appear in Google because Google thought that it was a web page with relevance to the user’s search criteria.

Google Adwords

However, as I am using the search engine in the UK, Priceline’s “Sponsored Link” is for their UK website; www.priceline.co.uk. If a search engine user in the US was conducting a search, web pages from the US Priceline website would be displayed.

This product that Priceline have subscribed to is Google’s advertising model, known as Google Adwords. This product offers a pay-per-click (PPC) advertising system in which Priceline pay Google when their advertisement or link, is clicked. “Sponsored link” ads contain a title, a short description and a web address (URL).

The advertiser, who in this case would be the Priceline marketing team decide which queries’ that their ads should match, and then Google decides on which ads to show and the order of each individual ad. Google uses an auction model to determine ad placement but it also takes into account the click-through rate, which is how often users click an ad. If the Priceline ad were to be clicked-through to on a high number of occasions, Google will move the ad higher up the results page.

The Three Steps for AdWords

Competitors, Hotwire.com appear on the other sponsored link area on the right hand side along with two other; price conscious, travel related websites. This is because Google aims to deliver ads that it has identified as useful to the word/s that the User has entered into the search field. When I searched a number of travel related words into Google, I saw the Hotwire sponsored link appearing at the top on a high number of occasions which shows that they have invested heavily in this form of advertising.

Priceline uses meta keywords within its website but Google does not use the “keywords” meta tag in its web search ranking so this may be one of the reasons that Priceline are using the Google Adwords model.

Using the AdQuants website, (www.adquants.com), a site that monitors online advertising and E-Marketing, I was able to find relevant information that was compiled on June 2009 on how the keywords advertising was used.

Firstly, the summary report for Priceline showed that the US website had the greatest number of its ads with Google (19,354), followed by 3,400 with Yahoo and just 30 with Microsoft adCenter, which appear on Microsoft’s’ Bing search engine.

This shows that Priceline are predominantly using Google as the search engine that they want to focus their advertising on with focus placed to a lesser extent on the Yahoo and Bing search engines.

The Google Advertisement report displayed below shows that keywords such as; orange park, arco arena, and huron had good Ad rankings of 3, 3 and 2 respectively. This is the order in which the ads were displayed on the results page. The keyword “Huron”, which is the name of one of the five Great Lakes of North America, received an average of 18 daily clicks costing Priceline, on average, $0.05 in daily Cost-per-click advertising with an average spend of $1 a day on advertising of this keyword.

Google Advertisement Report for priceline.com

I think that the adwords system is benefitting Priceline because they are spending a very small amount of money (1 pound) on the cost-per-click, which brings in potential new customers as well as customer bookings. Priceline already appear in the Google search results when words like “Priceline” and “Name Your Own Price” are entered but with Google AdWords they are able to target a new audience, who may not have been directly looking to book flights or accommodation etc. with the company.

O Google AdWords é uma ferramenta de publicidade online que algumas pessoas odeiam. A razão disso é

Predictive models have the power to create new markets, a power that is not all that common in techn

Predictive models have the power to create new markets, a power that is not all that common in technology. This is the first of several posts that contain case studies describing how companies have used predictive analytics to create new markets.

Motorcycle Insurance. For many years, it was difficult if you drove a motorcycle to get insurance. Drivers of motorcycles have more accidents than other drivers and the simplest course of action is simply not to insure them. For most drivers, simply knowing a few facts about them, such as their gender, age, and the number of miles driven to work, was enough information so that an insurance company could set premiums for an insurance policy.

This segment of the automobile insurance market was called the “standard segment” and includes 80%-90% of the market. The other segment, called the “nonstandard segment”, includes drivers with accidents, drivers of motorcycles and high performance cars, older drivers, and younger drivers. Most insurance companies in the 1950’s – 1980’s focused on the standard segment. The standard market was quite competitive during this period.

Progressive Insurance took a different tack in the 1970’s. It developed an analytic model that could quantify the risk of some who drove a motorcycle and then priced the policy accordingly. Motorcycle insurance was part of the nonstandard segment and there was much less competition in this segment. This segment also had a higher barrier to entry since pricing premiums (well) in this market required (simple) analytic models.

By developing an appropriate risk model Progressive was able to create a new market, which became an important driver of its growth in the 1970s. From 1975 to 1978, premium income grew from $38 million to $112 million, as Progressive solidified its leadership in the nonstandard market.

Source: The Progressive Corporation, www.fundinguniverse.com.

Online Text Ads. Google introduced their online text ads (to the right of search results) in January 2000. The ads were sold on a cost per thousand impressions (CPM) by a sales representative. This was the way most ads were sold at that time, although banner ads (not text ads) were the dominant form of online advertising. These ads didn’t generate a lot of money at the beginning.

In the Spring of 2000, the online banner ad market crashed. In response, Google changed its business model to a self-serve model. With a self-serve model, ads were not sold by a sales representative but instead through an online, self-serve web page. It got this idea from GoTo.com (which later became Overture, which later was bought by Yahoo!).

In October, 2000, Google introduced AdWords with the slogan: “Have a credit card and 5 minutes? Get your ad on Google today.” Ads were still priced by CPM, but there was no longer a sales representative. (By the way, Amazon used the same model in August, 2006 when it introduced EC2. With a credit card and 5 minutes you could get use an online computer and pay by the hour.)

In 2001, Google’s AdWords revenue approached $85 million, but was much less than Overture’s revenue which earned $288 million. In contrast to Google’s use of a CPM model, Overture used an auction model: the higher you bid for an ad the more likely your ad would appear.

A problem with the auction model as employed by Overture was that high bids could force an ad to the top but no one necessarily clicked on it unless it was relevant. Relevance using information extracted from text was something Google understood well.

Google built a predictive model (a response model) to predict whether a given user would click on a given ad. Google then integrated this response model with the rankings provided by the auction. Ads with higher expected responses would be moved up higher in the rankings, and those with lower expected responses would be moved lower in the rankings. Ads with the highest rankings would then be displayed. This new model that integrated an online auction with a response model was introduced into AdWords in February 2002.

From a modeling perspective, Google has introduced two disruptive technologies in modeling: 1) PageRank; and 2) integrating relevance through a response model into pay-per-click auctions for online ads.

With this integrated model, Google created a new market (online text ads) that it has dominated since 2002.

Health and Status Monitoring. Over the past several years, Open Data has developed predictive analytic models to monitor the operations of complex systems, such as data centers, network operations centers, world wide payment systems, etc. I’ll describe these types of models in a future post.

Everyone uses a search engine when they’re looking for content on the web. Studies show that Google drives online searches, with over 60% of searches in July 2009. Google works on bringing users relevant results to match what they’re looking for. But there’s 2 parts to search engine results: sponsored links and organic results. Sponsored links are paid for by the advertiser, but how does it work?

Advertisers create ads that contain information about their site, linked to keywords that they’ve bid on. Recently, Google has increased choice and relevancy to users by giving advertisers the option to include Ad Sitelinks, which gives users more options of where to go, and gives advertisers the ability to create more relevant ads with multiple purposes, driving traffic to different landing pages. Inside AdWords gives a good example of Priceline.com, shown below:

Microsoft recently introduced their new search engine, Bing, which also offers paid search engine advertising, called AdCenter. A case study provided by Microsoft explains how CPC Logic increased conversions and traffic for their products and improved their demographic targeting using Microsoft’s paid advertising.

Using paid advertising on search engines allows you to advertise directly to people who are searching for your product. Your ads appear when someone searches for your keywords. You only pay when someone clicks on your ad, but even when it’s not clicked on, the impressions are still there.

Hal Varian, Google’s Chief Economist, explains how Google’s Ad Auction works in the video below. He describes how google determines relevancy, and how the millions of users help them to determine which ads are quality ads. Google uses CTR (click-through-rate), relevancy, and the quality of the landing page to determine the overall quality of the ad. Users drive the CTR, which is the number of users who clicked on the ad in comparison to the number of impressions.

Will you use Google AdWords, or some other search engine advertising to drive traffic to your site?

According to the New Media Age Journal, geo-targeting allows marketers to geographically target advertisements to a specific area, allowing businesses to reap major benefits from catering directly to their target market locale. Each area can be specified according to zip-code, region, city, or IP address to name a few.

Geo-targeting is especially valuable to small business. A local company such as a family restaurant can use geo-targeting to ensure local internet-users are able to search and find the information they need. For example, important information can be hours of operation, restaurant locations and menu items. The concept of geo-targeting allows internet-users to find information quickly and easily, eliminating the need to search through information from all around the world that may relate to particular search words used. Here is an example of how local island-based Misty Ridge Coffee, utilizes location information and geo-targeting techniques… when searching “Vancouver Island Based Coffee” in Google Search: http://www.mistyridgecoffeebeans.com/ appears. This tells the searcher that “Vancouver Island Based Coffee” is a phrase associated specific search words chosen by the company in anticipation of what words internet-users would type in the search engine, looking for Island Based Coffee.

Multivarient testing is something i believe strongly in and google have created a fantastic tool for this.

The tool gives you the ability to portion off areas of your site, and use real time stats with real users to actually prove if something does or doesn’t work. This is great news if you don’t have the resources for user testing.

Google optimizer works by wrapping the section you want to change into some google javascript code. You can then upload your various alterations into the google optimizer admin area. The optimizer will then randomly display your different varients and show you the results of your tests.

In the admin area you have multiple options such as setting defining how long you want the test to run for, filtering out any options that bring back the poorest results. The optimizer works with your google adwords and analytics accounts.

There are a couple of draw backs to the software:

The javascript will fail the xhtml validation test – they are currently working to fix this problem.

It is a pain to share your information with other users, and it seems the people you invite must have a googlemail or adwords account.

Overall it is a great tool, and i will be using it heavily for any multivarient testing i need to do in the future.
