The Kansas City Chiefs have added yet another face to the ILB position battle to play next to Derrick Johnson. Mike Garafolo of USA Today reports former Cowboys’ LB Orie Lemon has signed with the Chiefs after he really impressed coaches during a work out.

In recent weeks Kansas City has signed Zac Diles and Akeem Jordan to compete for this spot. There is no clear front runner so Lemon has a chance to make the team if he excels.

Lemon came into the league as a undrafted free agent in 2011 and then jumped from the practice squad to the Cowboys active roster in 2012 when Sean Lee was hurt for the season. He only has five NFL games under his belt so he does not have a lot of experience, but if the Chiefs see promise they maybe able to mold him into the LB they are looking for.

Out with the old and in with the new! After coming off of an abysmal 2-14 2012 season the Kansas City Chiefs have made some big changes and are pumped for the 2013 season. Can this be the makings of a “Redemption Year”?

The Chiefs have put some thought and planning in who they have brought into Kansas City with the signing of Head Coach Andy Reid and GM John Dorsey. The early signings of these two key head office additions allowed them to get an early start on bringing in the right coaching staff.

With the coaching staff assembled early they had a very unique opportunity to start reviewing the team and finding out who they wanted to keep, release, as well as positions they needed to improve upon.

Through this precess the Chiefs managed to maintain players like Dustin Colquitt, Branden Albert, and Dwayne Bowe. All, with exception of Albert were about to go out into the free agency market and would have been picked up early by other teams.

KC also added some big names to the glaring holes the new staff recognized on film. Players like QB Alex Smith, CB Dunta Robinson, WR Donnie Avery, QB Chase Daniel, TE Anthony Fasano, CB Sean Smith, OL Geoff Schwartz, FB Ryan D’Imperio, and DE Mike DeVito.

Returning in 2013 is also the 6 Pro Bowl players that belonged to that 2-14 team, Jamaal Charles, Eric Berry, Derrick Johnson, Tamba Hali, Dustin Colquitt and Justin Houston.

The foundation is here KC and the stage is set for an exciting 2013 season. It’s time to put the past in the past and start winning again!

The Kansas City Chiefs will have a three-day voluntary minicamp from Tuesday-Thursday of this week. Though it’s voluntary, we expect (almost) everyone to show up. The Chiefs players will be getting on the field together for the first time which should help us answer a few questions we’ve had about the team since Andy Reid and John Dorsey began putting their stamp on the team. Continue Reading…

The 2013 season is nearly 6 months away, but with the exciting off-season moves the Chiefs have made so far I’m counting down the days until kick-off. Let’s take a closer look at what’s in store for the Chiefs, and the AFC West going into this upcoming season.

Denver Broncos

Peyton Manning will be going into 2013 with a season under his belt in the Denver Broncos’ offense. He will also be healthier and have a new toy to play with in Wes Welker.

Broncos key off-season acquisitions.

Signed free agent WR Wes Welker

Signed free agent CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie

Franchise Tagged OT Ryan Clady

The Denver Broncos have been busy in free agency by signing WR Wes Welker and four other veterans—CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, G Louis Vasquez, LB Stewart Bradley and DT Terrance Knighton. Four of the five free agents signed were signed to no more than two-year contracts—low risk investments on young veteran players to make contributions in the present.

The Broncos will enter the 2013 season with arguably the best receiving corps in the NFL with Demaryius Thomas, Eric Decker and Welker. All three of those guys had 1,000 yard seasons in 2012.

They will also have a strong 1,2 punch at CB with Rodgers-Cromartie starting opposite of Champ Bailey. With Rodgers-Cromartie being 26 years old, he may be the guy that ends up replacing Bailey once Champ hangs it up. The Broncos also have young cornerbacks Tony Carter and Omar Bolden for depth.

2013 Prediction | 12-4 record, AFC West Champions, AFC Champions, Super Bowl runner-up (Just because I hate Manning)

Kansas City Chiefs

The Chiefs have been one of the most active teams this off-season, and with good reason. After going 2-14 things are most certainly bound to change. The first moves were to get rid the worst General Manager the Chiefs have ever had in Scott Pioli, also replacing the coaches. Owner Clark Hunt said he was committed to getting “his guys”. He did just that; getting the best Head Coach available, Andy Reid. Mr. Hunt also went out and grabbed draft guru John Dorsey from the Green Bay Packers to take over the watch as GM.

Chiefs key off-season acquisitions.

Traded for QB Alex Smith

Signed free agent QB Chase Daniel(S) lol…

Re-signed WR Dwayne Bowe

Signed free agent WR Donnie Avery

Re-signed Punter Dustin Colquitt

Franchise Tagged LT Branden Albert

Restructured DE Tyson Jackson

Signed free agent CB Dunta Robinson

Signed free agent CB Sean Smith

Signed free agent TE Anthony Fasano

General Manager John Dorsey is obviously building depth on this team at every position with his early moves. This is a good indication that he will indeed go with his “best player available” philosophy in the draft. With the Chiefs having the overall number 1 pick in this years draft, it’s anybody’s guess who that might be right now. Most experts are predicting LT Luke Joeckel from Texas A&M. (I hate that idea)

The Chiefs have gone 30 years without drafting a QB in the first round, and trading away a second round pick for 49ers backup Alex Smith, that looks to seal the 31st year. They have some solid talent around Smith that could flourish if things go accordingly. With Smith’s accuracy, quick release and sound decision-making skills, Jamaal Charles should be the recipient of plenty of dump offs on plays.

Also, there will likely be a variety of short passes designed to get him the ball in space on high-percentage throws.

The most exciting moves this off season for the Chiefs have been the upgrade they have done with the secondary. Bringing in two legitimate DB’s in Dunta Robinson and Sean Smith. Robinson and Smith are aggressive in bump coverage, which new DB coach Al Harris and Defensive Coordinator Bob Sutton have implemented into the new scheme. Expect the Chiefs to be a heavy rush team next year that forces opposing QB’s to make split decisions.

With the Chiefs sending 6 players to last years Pro-Bowl, there is a ton of talent on this team. The new additions on the field, and in front office should help bring the Chiefs back relevance in the AFC West. Things will be tough for the Chiefs as long as Peyton Manning’s neck is still here.

2013 Prediction | 9-7 record, 2nd in AFC West. Maybe squeak into a Wild-Card game.

San Diego Chargers

The Chargers are going into 2013 with a new Head Coach Mike McCoy, and new General Manager Tom Telesco. Philip Rivers turned 31 in December and without a quality offensive line, Rivers and the Chargers have little to no hope of making the playoffs. Basically, all five starting offensive line positions need to be overhauled.

Chargers key off-season acquisitions.

Signed free agent CB Derek Cox

Signed kicker Nick Novak

Signed free agent OT King Dunlap

They did sign one of the biggest names on the market at the cornerback position in Derek Cox. Despite the signing, the Chargers could still use a cornerback or two. Shareece Wright and Marcus Gilchrist are the only other two cornerbacks on the roster who should see significant playing time in 2013, so the need is still there. There is considerable depth at the cornerback position in the draft, so the Chargers will likely look to add a cornerback in the second or third round as opposed to the first.

Free-agent RB and former New England Patriot Danny Woodhead agreed to a 2-year deal with the Chargers. What San Diego gets in Wooodhead is obviously his versatility, but more importantly the team has finally found its legitimate No. 2 back to pair with Ryan Mathews. On passing downs, Woodhead can be that guy to make something out of nothing.

2013 Prediction | 7-9 record, 3rd in the AFC West.

Oakland Raiders

A decade has passed since the Oakland Raiders last made the playoffs or even had a winning season.

Raiders key off-season acquisitions.

Re-sign CB Phillip Adams

Signed free agent LB Jason Hunter

Signed OLB Kaluka Maiava

Signed OLB Nick Roach

The Raiders have needs all over their roster, but none as big as cornerback. Their offensive line is in need of some help, but you can identify viable starters, the same cannot be said of the CB position. The defensive line is also a big area of need, there are a couple of solid guys and some depth. If they really are moving to a 3-4 defense, the defensive line will be easier to address with one less position needed. They will receive one round six compensatory pick in the 2013 draft. They now have picks in Round 1, 3, 4, 6 (2), and 7 (2).

With so many questions surrounding the quarterback position entering 2013, an immediate reversal of that trend doesn’t seem likely. The Raiders are focusing their attention on bringing in a young quarterback to compete with Terrelle Pryor. Cutting ties with the overpaid Carson Palmer would send the right message to the franchise. With the third pick in the draft, they should have a fairly decent shot at landing Geno Smith. (sigh)

Darren McFadden has earned the reputation of being one of the most injury-plagued running backs in the NFL. McFadden has spent five years in the league and has failed to play in more than 13 games in any season. When healthy, he is one of the most electrifying running backs in the NFL. With General Manager Reggie McKenzie searching to free up some cash before next season begins, McFadden’s inability to stay healthy should persuade him into exploring a trade for the injury-prone running back. Oakland could easily get a second-round and possibly another third-round pick for McFadden, which would be huge for the Raiders since they currently don’t have a second-rounder.

2013 Prediction | 4-12 record, last place in AFC West.

Denver Broncos wide receiver Andre Caldwell went public to express his feeling on not being able to practice at Duke with teammates Peyton Manning, Demaryius Thomas and Wes Welker as well as Giants quarterback Eli Manning.

to practice receiving routes. Caldwell went on Instagram and posted a picture of a burning sheet of paper that read:

“No invite to Duke to run routes and catch passes. Damn right I took it personal”.

The response from followers were very different. Some said that he had every right to be offended while some said to step up his game.

Caldwell was drafted in the 3rd round by the Cincinatti Bengals (97th overall pick). In his first season with the Broncos he racked in 1 reception for 18 yards in only 8 games played. Caldwell’s production value was minimal for Denver last season and with Welker being added in the mix of Denver’s receiver set expect Caldwell to receive even less production. His minimal production is most likely why he didn’t get the call to go practice at Duke.

The Broncos organization, nor the players involved (Manning,Welker,Thomas and Decker) have yet to make a statement.

The Kansas City Chiefs have had one glaring hole in their defense so far, inside linebacker. The spot next to Derrick Johnson has been wide open through free agency and some were wondering if the Chiefs would use a draft pick on that spot in the upcoming NFL draft.

The last couple of days seems to indicate the Chiefs are not to impressed with what they think they can get their hands on at the ILB position in the draft.

On Friday the Chiefs announced the signing of linebacker Zac Diles, and Saturday they announced the signing of linebacker Akeem Jordan to a one year deal.

Jordan, a former Philadelphia Eagle, visited the Chiefs on Friday after visiting with the Bengals earlier this week. Even though he had more upcoming visits with other teams Jordan decided that KC was the best fit for him.

Jordan’s contract is for one year for the minimum salary and includes a $20,000 signing bonus.

In six NFL seasons Jordan has recorded one sack, two interceptions, two forced fumbles, seven pass defensed, and 262 tackles. Last year he started seven games for the Eagles but played in 14, and had two forced fumbles and 44 tackles.

The Kansas City Chiefs have announced today that they have agreed to a one year deal with linebacker Zac Diles.

In six seasons Diles has played in 67 games with 31 starts with the Titans, Buccaneers, Colts and Texans. In his career he has 223

tackles, one sack, one interception, three passes defensed, three forced fumbles and on fumble recovery. The Houston Texans originally picked him up in the 2007 NFL Draft in the 7th round (218th overall).

Diles will be competing for the ILB spot next to Derrick Johnson. The Chiefs have a need at ILB and with the second round pick gone from the trade for Alex Smith, picking up a starting ILB in the draft is not likely. The down side to Diles is that he has an injury prone history so that is why the Chiefs only signed him to a one year contract.

That’s what we do this for, that’s why we have all the changes with the coaches, players or whatever we have going, trying to win the Super Bowl, so, whatever it takes with the regime we have in now, there’s a lot of optimism, there’s a great opportunity to do something great and I definitely want to be a part of it.” ~ Derrick Johnson

Kansas City Chiefs inside linebacker Derrick Johnson talks about the changes at Arrowhead and the challenges of building a team in the NFL: At the Mothership.

The Chiefs were 2-14 last season. It was an awful year that everyone wants to put behind them.

Now… change is in the air, and it’s nice to see players like Derrick Johnson give a shout out to the ultimate goal: Winning the Super Bowl.

Number one draft picks are nice. Free agent signings are exciting. Having an offense that can move the ball and score points is wonderful. Utilizing a defense that can blitz the quarterback and turnover the football is outstanding.

However, there will be no feeling greater than when the Chiefs finally win a playoff game… Except for the ultimate feeling of excellence when they capture the Lamar Hunt trophy for the AFC Championship… Which, will only be eclipsed by his son, Clark Hunt hoisting the Lombardi Trophy after a Chiefs Super Bowl Victory.

Wow!

At Chiefs Dreams, we love when current Chiefs talk Super Bowl. It is why the game is played, and we think it is great when players point that out. Thanks for being a Chief, DJ.

Check out the article by Reid Ferrin. Derrick talks about building a team and moving forward in 2013. It’s an exciting time Chiefs fans and the Chiefs Pro Bowl linebacker is ready to get to work.

This has been a heavy week for the Oakland Raiders as they continue to sign veterans to their roster

This has been a heavy week for the Oakland Raiders as they continue to sign veterans to their roster. The signing of Safety Usama Young and CB Mike Jenkins on Tuesday dealt with holes on Oakland’s defense while today’s signings deal with the offense. Today the Raiders signed QB Seneca Wallace and RB Rashad Jennings to provide a little depth to those positions.

Seneca Wallace looks to be a Raider now

According to Ian Rapoport’s report on Thursday Seneca Wallace is expected to sign with the Raiders. On Wednesday Wallace and Tyler Thigpen worked out at the Raiders training facility and it looks like Wallace won out.

Wallace will more than likely be placed behind Matt Flynn and Terrelle Pryor on the depth chart in that 3rd QB position. He will be getting his first shot at making a NFL roster since the Browns dropped him during training camp in 2012.

Wallace is a seven year veteran and was picked up in the fourth round by the Seattle Seahawks in 2003. He has 21 career starts for the Seahawks and the Browns, his best came in ’08 when he had eight starts and threw for 1,532 yds, 11 touchdowns and 3 interceptions.

In 2005 Wallace caught a 28 yard touchdown pass in the NFC Championship game. He has been asked to move numerous times to WR but continues to insist he is a QB. Maybe he will finally make the move in Oakland so he can stay on the roster.

Rashad Jennings is heading to Oakland

Also on Thursday the Oakland Raiders added depth to their RB position with the signing of former Jaguars RB Rashad Jennings.

Jennings wrote on Twitter:

“Its official! I’ll be rocking that Black and Silver this yr. <s>#</s>Raidernation let’s go make it happen!”

Last year was not a productive year for Jennings, he only rushed for more than 50yds one time, averaged just 2.8 yds per carry and was plagued by concussions and a shoulder injury.

Over 3 seasons Jennings has 944 yds on 228 carries in Jacksonville being the backup for Maurice Jones-Drew. He has missed 23 games due to injury and has never played a full season for the Jaguars. Seems to be a risky move due to the injury prone backfield already in Oakland.

On April 9th, they signed cornerback Mike Jenkins, safety Usama Young and defensive end Andre Carter to free-agent contracts.

Jenkins spent the past five seasons with the Cowboys. He started 48 games in his career but only two last season. He had five interceptions and made the Pro Bowl in 2009 but has just two interceptions the past three seasons.

Young played the last two seasons in Cleveland after spending four years in New Orleans, where Raiders coach Dennis Allen was secondary coach. He has seven interceptions and 22 passes defensed in 81 games.

Carter signed with the Raiders early last season and had 2½ sacks in 12 games.

Joselio Hanson returns to the Raiders for a second season after the team signed him as a free agent late in camp last year. He had spent the previous six seasons in Philadelphia where he was the Eagles long time slot corner.

The next day, the Raiders settled on Seneca Wallace as their third quarterback. They apparently chose Wallace over Tyler Thigpen as they were looking for another quarterback to go with Matt Flynn and Terrelle Pryor.

Wallace, who has played for the Seattle Seahawks and Cleveland Browns, was out of the league last year.

Although Clark has made just a half-dozen starts for the Broncos over the last three seasons, he figures to get plenty of first-team snaps as Peyton Manning‘s blindside protector when offseason workouts begin. Clark is a fifth-year pro who has played in 40 career games.

Clark played at the University of Southern Mississippi. He signed by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as an undrafted free agent in 2008. After spending two years with the Minnesota Vikings he was waived on September 4, 2010 during final cuts prior to the beginning of the 2010 NFL season. On September 5th Clark was claimed off waivers by the Denver Broncos.

After being released by the Oakland Raiders on Friday, it seemed that Rolando McClain would not sign with another team for quite some time. Turns out, his unemployment period did not last very long at all. According to NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport, the Baltimore Ravens have agreed to a contract with the three year veteran. He also reported that the deal is a one year contract worth about $700,000 with possible incentives.

Suprisingly, five NFL teams were pursuing him before he made his decision to go to the Ravens. Three of those teams were so interested they even made offers after he cleared waivers on Monday. However, it appears the Ravens gave McClain what he was looking for.

So, what does this signing mean? Well, after the departures of inside linebackers Dannell Ellerbe and Ray Lewis, the Ravens are in need of two players to fill those spots. Because of their 3-4 scheme, inside linebackers are a major part of that defense, and they believe that McClain can fit in one of those spots.

In contrast, I’m not sure if that’s a very smart move. Rolando McClain, a former eighth overall pick, has struggled mightily on and off field over the past two seasons, and this culminated this past season as he was suspended last season for conduct detrimental to the team. After returning, McClain was quickly demoted from the starting lineup due to poor play.

Ultimately, the Ravens took all of this information into account before making this decision and still felt it was the right move to make. If John Harbaugh can turn McClain around and get good play out of him this upcoming season, it will be a testament to his coaching abilities. If he cannot, this could be McClain’s last year in the NFL.

The Oakland Raiders continue to build their secondary on Tuesday with another signing of a good bargain priced player. Safety Usama Young, signed with the Raiders after spending two years in Cleveland and four years in New Orleans. Dennis Allen (current Raiders Head Coach) was his secondary coach when he played for the New Orleans Saints. Young who is 28 has seven career interceptions and 22 passes defensed in the 81 NFL games he’s played. He had a career best last year when he had three interceptions with the Browns.

The Oakland Raiders were able to secure some much needed help and talent to their defensive backfield by signing a deal with CB Mike Jenkins. Jenkins reportedly signed a 1 year deal with the Raiders on Tuesday source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

Jenkins was the Cowboys 25th overall pick in 2008 and was picked to play in the 2009 Pro Bowl as a member of the Cowboys. His play slowly declined which led Jerry Jones and the Cowboys to sign Brandon Carr to a huge five year $50.1 million dollar deal.

In March Jerry Jones had this to say about Jenkins, “Jenkins is very capable, I think a good cornerback, We happen to be pretty committed relative to the rest of our roster. We have to be pretty committed at cornerback. Under a different circumstances, Jenkins might be a little different story for us right now. He would be a different story right now, he certainly wouldn’t be out of our radar as far as having him of bringing him back as a starter. I think Jenkins is a starting cornerback in the NFL.”

Oakland is in desperate need of good caliber players especially in the cornerback position. Oakland will see some very good QB’s in their division including Peyton Manning, Alex Smith, and Philip Rivers. This is a very good value pick-up for Oakland.

Donald Butler’s rookie year was not what he had in mind after he was drafted out of the Univer

Donald Butler’s rookie year was not what he had in mind after he was drafted out of the University of Washington. During Training Camp in 2010, Butler suffered a season-ending achilles injury. Current Chargers Defensive Coordinator and Butler’s former Linebacker Coach, John Pagano, knew that Butler was going to be a leader on the Chargers’ defense. Pagano knew some players have the ability to lead and he knew the Bolts had a special player in DB56.

Chargers have recently approached Butler to (hopefully) give him a contract extension and continue his career with the Bolts and I, for one, am ecstatic that this could happen. He will be the Captain of the defense coming into the 2013 season with Takeo Spikes and Shaun Phillips recently shown the door.

Despite missing four games last year, he still killed it and was in on every play. Look for Butler to be around the ball on every play and elevate his game to become one of the best linebackers in the league and at 24 years of age, he’ll continue to get even better. Suppose he would’ve played a full second-half of the Ravens game last year, the Bolts could’ve avoided yet another embarrassing franchise scar that was 4th and 29. I know for sure he wouldn’t have missed his tackle!

Pull this off Chargers and you will make fans very happy (I’m still mad about Louis Vasquez signing with the Chargers rival Denver Broncos but what’s new?) Oh, and he’s a great follow on facebook. He Bleeds the blue and gold.

Kawhi so serious?
