MIDFIELDER Adnan Ahmed believes national coach George Kottan can lead them to glory in the South Asi

MIDFIELDER Adnan Ahmed believes national coach George Kottan can lead them to glory in the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) Championship.

Pakistan kick off their tournament against Sri Lanka on the opening day of the tournament in Bangladesh, before taking on the hosts and Bhutan in their other group matches.

Ahmed is convinced their will be no excuses for the Greenshirts not to do well in this tournament.

“I am very excited about the SAFF cup,” said the Ferencvaros player. “George has prepared the boys the best possible so there are no excuses about being ready.

“He is an excellent coach and a great leader. Without doubt he is definitely the right man for the job as he has brought about much needed discipline and more importantly the experience he has is vital not only for the players but for the up n coming coaches in Pakistan.

“I feel we now have an excellent chance to go far in the competition. It’s very important we have a good start and what better way than to get revenge against Sri Lanka.

“We were treated unfairly in the AFC Challenge Cup qualifiers when we last met and we deserved to go through but bad refereeing decisions cost us.

Ahmed is one of five British players who have been included in the 21-man squad, along with Atif Bashir and Amjad Iqbal, who will be looking to add to their caps while Shabir Khan and Reis Ashraf will get their first taste of international football.

One name which is absent from the group is Zesh Rehman. Thought included in the squad, the defender has decided to skip the tournament to help club side Bradford City push towards the League Two play-off spots.

While Rehman’s absence is a big loss, Adnan believes it will give a chance to one of the other members of the squad to step up to the mark.

Ahmed is also looking forward to welcoming the likes of Khan and Ashraf into the squad as they look to win their first caps.

“Shabir and Reis have shown great promise so far during the training camp and I’m sure they’ll strengthen the team,” added Ahmed.

“I think the extra inclusion of foreign-based players will only improve the team but once again we have to prove ourselves so let’s hope we all gel together quickly and produce the goods.

“Zesh will obviously be a big loss but luckily we have Atif, who was outstanding in the last AFC cup, Amjad and Shabir present.

“All the mentioned are more than able to step up and do a great job in defence so hopefully it wont be to big a loss.”

First things first hoi polloi, let’s make sure you know who to listen to before you borrow any

First things first hoi polloi, let’s make sure you know who to listen to before you borrow any more money from Grandma. Although each Kibitzer improved their prediction scores from week 12, none were as impressive at Gen who picked 13 games correctly out of 16. Andrew and Gen were tied with 12 correct going into the Monday night game between the Pats and Saints, but Andrew predicted that the Pats were going to pull out the upset. In hindsight, this makes him look foolish and weak. Andrew ended at 12 and 4 and Greg improved (but fell to last for the week) with 11 and 5. Overall, Gen leads the Kibitzers with 23 and 9 and Andrew and Greg are tied at 21 and 11.

If this week is anything like last week, the Kibitzers will be flawless…

Thursday Dec. 03, 8:20 PM:

New York Jets AT Buffalo Bills – The Bills showed that they still know how to play football after the 3rd quarter by beating Miami and by putting up as many points in the fourth quarter (24) as the Bills had scored in an entire game all year. The Jets have the second best rushing attack while the Bills are last in the league against the run. The last time the Jets played the Bills, Thomas Jones YPC (9.5) was higher than Mark Sanchez’s QB rating (8.3).

Andrew’s pick – New York Jets. The Bills aren’t really at home, they’re playing in Canada again. Although neither team has that much going for it on offense the Jets defense should be able to keep the Bills out of the end zone to ensure a win.

Greg’s Pick – Buffalo Bills. The Bills finally are throwing the ball deep and realizing they have two amazing wide receivers. Expect an onslaught on the Jets defense, and Sanchez to have a rough game once again.

Gen’s Pick – Buffalo Bills. The Bills’ defense had four interceptions last week against Miami. Mark Sanchez, who looooves getting picked off (17 so far this season) will definitely blow it again this Sunday. Watch for the improving Bills offense to use TO and Fred Jackson again.

The rest of the picks:

Sunday, Dec. 06, 1:00 Pm:

Philadelphia Eagles AT Atlanta Falcons – Both teams are coming off important division wins to keep their playoff chances alive. Matt Ryan has already been ruled out of this game with turf toe and Michael Turner is currently on the fence with an ankle injury. The Eagles lost DeSean Jackson to a concussion at the end of last weeks game and given all the focus on how the NFL handles concussions it seems likely that the Eagles won’t play him.

Andrew’s pick – Philadelphia Eagles. Even though the Eagles struggled against the Redskins, they were able to find a way to win collectively as a team. The Falcons are inexperienced at quarterback and if things go wrong, rookie John Parker Wilson could face the Eagles’ top ten defense.

Greg’s Pick – Philadelphia Eagles. Matt Ryan out and a question mark next to Turner lead to trouble in Atlanta. Enjoy the welcome back to ATL Vick, you will most likely play three plays and do absolutely nothing.

Gen’s Pick – Philadelphia Eagles. Last week, both teams came back from point deficits to win their respective games. However, with Matt Ryan out and with McNabb still able to do work on the field, I don’t think Atlanta will be able to play effectively against the Eagles.

St. Louis Rams AT Chicago Bears – The Chicago Bears have won one game since their week five bye. The Rams have won one game period. Dare we say the most exciting game of the year!?

Andrew’s pick – Chicago Bears. Both teams have found impressive ways to lose but without Marc Bulger, the Rams really have little hope.

Greg’s Pick – Chicago Bears. Couldn’t have said it any better Andrew.

Gen’s Pick – Chicago Bears. [please see above]

Detroit Lions AT Cincinnati Bengals - The Bengals defense has allowed for them to remain on top of the AFC North by allowing the league’s fewest points per game with 15.8. The Lions defense ranks last in the league in total yards and passing yards allowed.

Andrew picks - Cincinnati Bengals. The Bengals already have a 100+ yard rusher in Larry Johnson and are expecting their leading rusher, Cedric Benson, to return for this game. With the depth at running back, the Bengals should be able to control this entire game.

Greg’s Pick – Cincinnati Bengals. Just too much work for the Lions to hang in this one.

Gen’s Pick – Cincinnati Bengals. We told you the loss to Oakland was a fluke. With over 200+ yards on offense last Sunday against the Browns, the Bengals will overwhelm the Lions in this kitty cat fight. *Reeeer*

Oakland Raiders AT Pittsburgh Steelers – After losing to the Ravens, the Steelers have dropped to third place in their division. The Steelers defense is 1st against the rush and the Raiders are last in the league in passing yards. Where is Darrius Heyward-Bey when you need him!?

Andrew’s pick – Pittsburgh Steelers. The Raiders have come up big in a few games, surprising the very same Bengals that had swept the Steelers the week before. Don’t expect an upset in this one. Even with Big Ben returning I expect the Steelers to put up 12 points which is more than the Raiders are averaging.

Greg’s Pick – Oakland Raiders. That’s right, the ol’ upset. The Steelers are coming into this week with a lot of distractions going on inside the locker room – SWOOP – Raiders steal a win in Pittsburgh.

Gen’s Pick – Pittsburgh Steelers. As much as I want to put faith in Oakland taking advantage of the distracted (Ben) “Stillers” this week, I learned my lesson when I counted on them to rain on the Cowboys’ parade. So this week, I’m putting my faith in you Pittstburgh (who might have Ben Hambrugler back this Sunday). Don’t let me down.

Tennessee Titans AT Indianapolis Colts – Vince Young led an impressive last-minute drive to beat the University of South Cali…wait… Matt Lienhert and the… Cardinals! That’s right. Payton Manning seems to do that just for kicks and has been rewarded with the first team to lock up a playoff spot. Despite the teams over all records, both quarterbacks are unbeaten this season.

Andrew’s pick – Indianapolis Colts. Ordinarily with a play off birth I would be afraid of the Colts would be looking towards, well, the playoffs, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. The Colts will probably try their hand at the run game, but not until after Peyton makes sure they get the first round bye and home field advantage.

Greg’s Pick – Tennessee Titans. How many times do I have to pick against the Colts for them to actually lose? At least once more…The Titans are playing with fire and actually believe in each other.

Gen’s Pick – Indianapolis Colts. Do you know how long it took me to write down my prediction? On one hand, the Titans have a five game winning streak. On the other hand, the Colts are undefeated. Last week, the Titans won against the Warner-less Cardinals in the final seconds. And on the other hand, the Colts came back in the second half to take the lead and never looked back. But reminiscent of the Redskins a couple of years back when Todd Collins took the place of an injured dumb-dumb Campbell, the weight on Young’s shoulders will finally make him and the Titans buckle in this week’s loss to the Colts.

Denver Broncos AT Kansas City Chiefs – More than six million viewers heard Josh McDaniels curse out his penalty prone offense during the Thanksgiving Day game last week. Luckily, it seemed to work and the Broncos crushed the Giants. The Chiefs put up more points against the Chargers than the Broncos did but still lost by the same margin (29).

Andrew’s pick – Denver Broncos. This on again off again offense should look like the team that started the season 6-0 against the Chiefs’ defense.

Greg’s Pick – Denver Broncos. Seems like McDaniels might have righted the ship. Just in time for an old rivalry with the Chiefs.

Gen’s Pick – Denver Broncos. It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s Brandon Marshall and Eddie Royal running like Chris Farley running away from bees (Bees? bzzzzzzz!!!) in the open field!

New England Patriots AT Miami Dolphins – Once again the Patriots are coming off another tough loss and are traveling to take it out on a division rival. The Dolphins are starting to show their true colors without Ronnie Brown but he didn’t play defense, so how did they lose to the Bills?

Andrew’s pick – New England Patriots. The Bills put up 24 in the fourth quarter against Miami. Brady got a little extra rest by being benched with four minutes remaining in the Saints game after getting stuffed all game. Miami won’t have the Defense to slow Brady in this game.

Greg’s Pick – New England Patriots. That was one tough game to watch on Monday Night, however the Pats bounce back and avoid losing to a division rival (who for some reason always has their number). Pats win in a squeaker.

Gen’s Pick – New England Patriots. After being spanked like a little boy and being put in timeout by Belichick, Brady and the Pats will take the pent up frustrations from Monday night and use it for a win against Miami.

New Orleans Saints AT Washington Redskins – This game will be a homecoming for a lot of people on the Saints - Mark Brunell, Leigh Torrence, Pierson Prioleau, Chase Daniels and maybe most importantly Greg Williams. In case you missed it, Greg Williams was all but guaranteed the head coaching position in Washington after Joe Gibbs retired, but you know how that turned out. If Greg Williams’ defense likes him at all they will be playing really hard on Sunday.

Andrew’s pick – New Orleans Saints. The Saints have had a couple close games (the Rams anyone?) but were perfect against the Patriots. Even if the Skins’ defense keeps this game close, the offense just won’t be able to get it done.

Greg’s Pick – New Orleans Saints. It will be a miracle if the Redskins are even close in this game. The Saints are the total package.

Gen’s Pick – New Orleans Saints. The Saints put up 38 points against New England. The Pats only managed to generate 17 points. The Skins’ defense will be swallowed up by the overpowering offense of the Saints. The Saints will be marching in and drinking someone’s milkshake.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers AT Carolina Panthers – The Panthers are banged up and may keep Delhomme on the bench due to a fractured finger on his throwing hand. The Buccaneers are 1 and 10 but have been playing better with Raheem Morris calling the plays on defense and Josh Freeman at the helm (pirate reference, oh yeah!).

Andrew’s pick - Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Bucs are getting it together. They need a lot of help and just might get it from untested Panthers quarterback Matt Moore, who may replace Delhomme in this game.

Greg’s Pick – Carolina Panthers. When in doubt – pick DeAngelo Williams. The running attack of the Panthers carries them past the Bucs. Freeman will throw a couple picks.

Gen’s Pick – Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Bucs put up 17 points last game while Carolina only put up six points. Remember, the Bucs did have the lead until that late pass by Chris Redman. I don’t think the Bucs have to worry about Carolina rallying late, or at any point, in the game.

Houston Texans AT Jacksonville Jaguars – The Jaguars generally can slow down Andre Johnson by placing their top corner, Rashean Mathis, on him. That won’t happen this week as Mathis is out due to his lingering groin injury. The Texans have been working hard at winning, but still have come up short.

Andrew’s pick – Houston Texans. Andre Johnson running free is Matt Schaub’s wet dream (gross). I don’t think the Jaguars are going to put up 21 in the fourth quarter, like the Colts did last week, to steal this game from the Texans.

Greg’s Pick – Houston Texans. The Jaguars started to figure things out, but just not enough to pull out a win against the Texans, but they’ll keep it close.

Gen’s Pick – Houston Texans. Hey, they did very well against the Colts. Jacksonville put up one field goal the entire game against San Fran. Look for another mis-match this Sunday with the Texans coming out on top.

Sunday, Dec. 06, 4:05 PM:

San Diego Chargers AT Cleveland Browns – The San Diego Chargers have established themselves at the top of their division. The Browns have established that they are still really bad.

Andrew’s pick – San Diego Chargers. If old man Larry Johnson can put up 107 yards on the Browns, I’m pretty sure LT will be able to as well.

Greg’s Pick – San Diego Chargers. I really don’t like this team at all, but they have really pulled it all together and are looking like a tough team headed into the playoffs strong.

Gen’s Pick – San Diego Chargers. The passing game was impressive last Sunday for the Chargers. I think the Chargers will be able to take away the ball on defense and score following the turnover the way they did with the Chiefs.

Sunday, Dec. 06, 4:15 PM:

Dallas Cowboys AT New York Giants – The Cowboys started off flat but have won six of their last seven. The Giants started off hot but have only won five of their last six. The Giants need this win to sweep the Cowboys and to stay in the playoff hunt.

Andrew’s pick – Dallas Cowboys. I would really like to see the Giants take this and even though they say Eli’s stress fracture isn’t effecting him, 6 points against Denver says it is. The Giants are just too banged up to pull out a victory.

Greg’s Pick – Dallas Cowboys. Could this be the year Romo breaks his awful December losing record? Well he’ll try – Cowboys in a rout.

Gen’s Pick – Dallas Cowboys. The Giants are playing hurt, disheartened, and distracted. The Cowboys, who are leading the division, won’t blow it – yet.

San Francisco 49ers AT Seattle Seahawks - 49ers head coach Mike Singletary asked his players what they thought needed to change in order to get their offense in better rhythm. Their answer: the spread offense. Both teams would like this win to close the gaps in the division. 49ers rush defense should put the ball in Matt Hasselback’s hands which could potentially be deadly, but hasn’t been recently.

Andrew’s pick- San Francisco 49ers. Both teams are inconsistent on both sides of the ball but the Seahawks don’t seem to have a clue of what to do with themselves.

Greg’s Pick – Seattle Seahawks. This game could go either way, so I’m picking the home field advantage of the Seahawks.

Gen’s Pick – San Francisco 49ers. It’s going to be a close one indeed. But I think San Francisco will be able to pull out a win. That IS fun to say, Francisco….Francisco…

Sunday, Dec. 06, 8:20 PM:

Minnesota Vikings AT Arizona Cardinals – One year after playing in the Superbowl, the Cardinals are looking like a team that needs to be rebuilt. Kurt Warner is practicing again have receiving a concussion two games ago but has had post-concussion symptoms as recent as Monday of this week. The Vikings have thoroughly won their last three games but haven’t really been challenged either.

Andrew’s pick – Minnesota Vikings. The Cardinals will need a lot of help on defense to keep one of the many scoring Vikings out of the end zone. If Warner plays and Jarred Allen sacks him (or cheap shots him) Warner could end up on IR.

Greg’s Pick – Minnesota Vikings. Once again we get to see Favre! THANK GOD! He’ll lead a late game comeback to take the victory out of the desert!

Gen’s Pick – Minnesota Vikings. First, I would like to apologize to Kurt Warner (who is not reading this) for making fun of his migraines last week. Secondly, if he sits out again, Leinart will not be able to play catch-up with the human red wine, Brett Favre…because he gets better with age…(*late rim shot*)

Monday, Dec. 07, 8:30 PM:

Baltimore Ravens AT Green Bay Packers - Both teams are second in their division but are in the thick of the playoff hunt. The Packers will be really rested coming off their win over the Lions on Thanksgiving (seems like forever ago doesn’t it?). The Ravens seem to have lost a step on Defense, but can still come up big when it matters.

Andrew’s pick – Green Bay Packers. I think something has clicked within this organization and they are playing well-rounded football. If their defense clamps down, the Ravens won’t stand a chance.

Greg’s Pick – Baltimore Ravens. Flacco will finally show up again and break out of his slump while Aaron Rodgers will crumble (3 turnovers).

Gen’s Pick – Green Bay Packers. Both have been off and on the past couple of weeks. But I think, with home field advantage, the Pacs will be able to pull out a victory.

Drew Brees and Peyton Manning

There have only been two teams in NFL history to record perfect regular seasons (1972 Miami Dolphins and the 2007 New England Patriots). This year, there is a good chance that tally could double as two teams are nearing perfection. The New Orleans Saints and Indianapolis Colts are five wins away from entering the record books. Both teams have relatively easy schedules remaining, and as such, perfection is within grasp. Both squads are very similar, comprised of high flying offences led by all-star quarterbacks coupled with respectible defences. The Saints reside in the NFC while the Colts reside in the AFC which means there is strong possibility of Super Bowl matchup of these opposing conference titans.

The New Orleans Saints are led by their MVP calibre quarterback Drew Brees. He is the heart and soul of this offence and has passed for 3,117 yards, with 27 touchdowns and 9 interceptions thrown in the 11 games played this year. This team’s success has also been possible due to the outstanding coaching staff led by head coach Sean Payton. Payton has brought in key staff like defensive coordinator Gregg Williams who has improved the Saints’ defence immensely over last season using various schemes to confuse opposing offences. Also, Payton was instrumental in acquiring some solid, versatile veterans like Darren Sharper who has been a terrific free safety this season, bringing another dimension to the defence. After pummelling New England on Monday, they have a very good chance of going undefeated this season, only having to face two teams over .500 in their 5 remaining games.

Heading north to Indiana, Peyton Manning is the cornerstone of the Indianapolis Colts. Championship memory exists in this team due to his stellar leadership which resulted in a Super Bowl victory in 2006. His leadership and poise is vital to the Colts’ success over a good portion of this past decade. So far, Manning has thrown 24 touchdowns, 11 interceptions, and over 3,346 yards of passing during their 11-0 run. While the Manning-Harrison connection no longer exists in Indy land, Manning now has two extremely viable passing options in the speedy Reggie Wayne and the sure-handed tight end Dallas Clark. This three pronged Indy attack has been nearly unstoppable throughout the season. In respect to their defence, it is one of the toughest in the league, led by Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis wreaking havoc on opposing quarterback’s combining for 19 sacks already this season. Indy’s quest for perfection will be likely only be challenged by their stiffest remaining competition, the Denver Broncos. Denver’s 5th best defence, when coupled with one of the top secondaries in the league, could pose a significant stumbling block on Indy’s persuit of perfection. I guess we will just have to wait and see.

I think the biggest question is, if both teams remain undefeated and collide in the Super Bowl, who will take the title? New Orleans currently ranks 1st in offence and 16th in defence while Indianapolis is ranked 4th and 15th, respectively. Both team are disciplined, well-coached, and most importantly, confident. It would be first time since the creation of the modern NFL that both teams would have perfect records heading into the Super Bowl. That being said, I have absolutely no idea. It is too early to predict who will win; all we know is at the end of the day there can only be one perfect team.

Looking at NFL standings – and, singing DEF LEPPARD’S “bringing on the heartbreak

Looking at NFL standings – and, singing DEF LEPPARD’S “bringing on the heartbreak” since the season leaders are such a shock…

– I wonder how can the Colts clinch their division and the Saints still be looking for America’s respect?

Jacksonville has the same 6-5 record as the Atlanta Falcons in the NFC South, but Indy’s 11-0 seems better than New Orleans? At this point, could the Falcons beat the Saints to take the division? NO way!!!

So, maybe I am missing a rule on the AFC and its treating the NFC like a red-headed stepchild? Maybe because the AFC is celebrating a milestone anniversary — they said, “you go first old geyser” (the league, that is)

This observation comes after watching the Saints manhandle Tom Brady and his New England Patriots on Monday Night Football.

Was there a point where I started to believe? You bet, and it was somewhere near the half way point – a Patriot RB tucks the ball, ducks his head and the NO defense literally stood him right up. It was like he ran into a brick wall – and this happened often throughout the game. The Saints brilliantly kept Brady off-balance and it was the weakest I have seen him throughout his entire career.

THE NFC EAST – has been such a disappointment. The Cowboys lead their division with a weak 8-3 record.

That ties other wild card teams like Cincinnati and San Diego.

*** I would rank these QB’s in this order: 1. Carson Palmer 2. Phillip Rivers 3. Tony Romo

The Giants tie the Baltimore Ravens and the Pittsburgh Steelers with a 6-5 record.

These three teams, Ravens in particular, are a nightmare for any team in the playoffs.

I would rank them in “capable of an upset” like this: 1. Ravens 2. Steelers and 3. Giants.

SIDE NOTE: Carson Palmer has led his team to victories over two of the three teams listed in the AFC North to give his Bengals a divisional lead down the stretch.

THE NFC NORTH is rolling with Brett Favre and the Minnesota Vikings at 10-1. Most disappointing here would be “Da Bears.”

***** Speaking of Disappointing – Jake Delhomme has thrown more interceptions than team wins this season. With a 4-7 record and 1-4 on the road; this team is worse than the 0-7 team of yester-year. This group of guys need serious attitude and ego adjustments. We need to keep John Fox, but dismantle the entire team. Poof be gone — draft NC STATE’S RUSSELL WILSON, and let’s get this party started.

***** SIDE NOTE — AND THIS IS WHY I AM SO MAD AT THE PANTHERS… They are 3-0 in their weak division; and they Play the Vikings, Giants and then the Saints… I have the brown paper bag ready! Let’s finish the disastrous season strong!!

We are committed to providing these young people with safe, dignified, nurturing environments where their needs can be met, and where they can begin to put their lives back together.	AFC is dedicated to promoting awareness of the plight of homeless LGBT youth in the United States with the goal of generating responses on local and national levels from government funders, foundations, and the LGBT community.

Broadway Speaks OUT is an online talk show hosted by Martin Gould Cummings. This informative program provides viewers with an inside look at Broadway, current events, and the LGBT community.

Broadway Speaks OUT is also a concert series that brings innovative and exciting music and theatre in support of the LGBT rights movement. Each concert features a variety of Broadway performers who use their talents to fight for equality. Every concert benefits an LGBT charity and/or organization.

                                                                                                  Ma

Many people, including me, thought the Tennessee Titan’s season was over after a shocking and unpredictable 0-6 start. After 3 close losses to the Steelers, Texans, and Jets followed by 3 blowout losses to the Jaguars, Colts, and Patriots the reeling Titans went into their week 7 bye surrounded by questions and searching for answers. The solution was simply Vince Young. Yes, the same Vince Young who last year had questions swirling about his desire and his mental health, but also the same Vince Young that is a proven winner as a starter in the NFL (23-11 career record as a starter). Young has the Titans on a 5 game winning streak and is poised to make it 6 when the Titans face the Colts in week 12 (which I think is a reasonable possibility). During the 5 game winning streak Young has thrown for 4 touchdowns and ran for another while only accounting for 3 turnovers, but he has received some help from the defense and especially from MVP candidate Chris Johnson (more about Johnson soon). Young’s brightest moment in his NFL career was his game winning 99 yard drive against the Cardinals last week. Young marched down the field, spraying the ball around to many receivers and finally capped off the drive with a touchdown pass to Kenny Britt on fourth down and no time remaining on the clock. Young and the Titans look to ride their new found momentum into next week’s showdown against the Colts.

I think the Titans have a legitimate chance at another 10 game win streak (remember they had one last year). Their last 5 games consist of 3 teams that currently have losing records and a Colts team that has looked human of late and a Chargers team that is the best example of Jekyll and Hyde. Call me crazy, but come this postseason the Titans will be lurking.

Now, my case for who I think should be MVP, Chris Johnson. Other than the obvious things like CJ’s combination of speed and power and his great blocking ability for a guy his size, very few if anyone in the NFL means more to their team than Chris Johnson. He does it all. Here are the stats to support my argument:

1396 rushing yards (1st in the NFL)

294 receiving yards (4th among running backs in the AFC)

9 rushing touchdowns (2nd among running backs in the AFC)

10 total touchdowns (3rd among running backs in the AFC)

The stats speak for themselves.

If you are a living, breathing person (at least as it is currently defined) who resides in Anchorage

If you are a living, breathing person (at least as it is currently defined) who resides in Anchorage, Alaska, you have noticed a tension in the air over the past year. It started with the election, which pit neighbor against neighbor on a more pronounced platform than ever before, with both our own Governor making headlines as she toured the lower 48 on the Straight Talk Express, and Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich taking on Uncle Ted for his Senate seat. Most people had never even known that profound differences in ideology existed from one mailbox down the street to the next. But all of a sudden, things were looking a lot different, and many people did not care for it one bit; shocked at the reality they had unintentionally unearthed. The predisposition that many of us had to stop when someone has a flat tire, or to be ready to break out the jumper cables when you see someone looking distraught, staring at their old car in the Fred Meyer parking lot, seemed to wither away and devolve into public screaming matches over health care, stimulus money, equal rights for our LGBT, growing homelessness, the city budget in Anchorage, among a host of other divisive topics. All of a sudden, the sense of community that we’ve all shared with each other – the neighborly convictions that have defined Alaskan hospitality – have turned into angry sneers seen in the rear view in reaction to whatever bumper stickers are placed on your car and therefor define you. The times are changing, and they are changing quickly. But, for all the tension that already exists, and has been mounting…

You ain’t seen nothin’ yet.

Meet Christopher Kurka, a 22 year old Eagle River resident who quietly submitted a proposal for an initiative to Lt. Governor Craig Campbell back in August, which Campbell approved in late October, allowing Kurka to begin collecting the 32,734 signatures needed to get the initiative placed on the ballot for Alaskans to vote on. The topic? Kurka seeks to afford constitutional rights and protections to the unborn. And, if successful, our state constitution would be amended to reflect that, causing a maelstrom of possible, and probable, implications.

Although both the Lt. Governor and Attorney General Dan Sullivan said that this does not seek to outlaw abortion or overturn Roe v. Wade, the intent of such a proposal, and admittedly it’s author, is exactly that. The summary for the bill, suggested by Campbell, reads: “This bill would extend legal person status to the pre-birth stages of human development. Under this bill a legal person would be recognized starting from the point of conception through birth and until death. This bill would not amend or repeal existing state law regulating abortion, but could impact some areas of the law to extend rights prior to birth.”

“The state responsibility is to protect our rights, and the most fundamental of those rights is the right to life. So what we’re doing here is asking the people of the state to sign this initiative, to get it on the ballot, and then to vote for it, so the unborn will be recognized as a person just like the rest of us,” Kurka told KTUU back in October.

His argument seeks to change the most common framing of the debate around abortion. Just this past week, we’ve seen the fairly publicized battle between Catholic Bishop Tobin and Patrick Kennedy heat up regarding whether or not pro-choice Catholics should be allowed communion. On MSNBC’s Hardball, Chris Matthews interviewed Tobin and made this statement:

“What should be the penalty for a young woman, or a girl even, to have an abortion, and if there’s no penalty for it, are you really outlawing it?”

His broader point was that it is one thing to take a personal, moral stance against abortion because it conflicts with your own individual world view or ideology. But, to this point, we have not impacted other people who may

from KTUU

have a differing belief, nor have we imposed sanctioned against people for ending a pregnancy, because while we may disagree on the practice, the majority of Americans do not feel that the act is a criminal one. It is a deeply troubling decision a would-be mother must make; but we have not felt that it is one she should serve time for.

This initiative seeks to change this policy. It seeks to make abortion criminal, and would seek to prosecute women who terminate pregnancies for murder or manslaughter. And the implications could be a lot further reaching. Despite the Lt. Governor’s explanation that finds the proposal acceptable; that it does not seek to “amend or repeal existing state law regulating abortion,” it would have to, if written into law. If constitutional rights are afforded at the point of conception, which is the specific aim of Mr. Kurka’s efforts, then we could very easily be looking at the abolition of choice, contraception being made criminal, rape and incest resulting in children born into horrendous and often violent living conditions, among countless other concerns. And we would be forced to try in a court of law those who performed and/or underwent abortions as murderers. I hate to sensationalize the radical implications that could possibly ensue, but this is the exact wording of the proposal. This is in no way a hyperbolic account of possible outcomes.

Jeffrey Mittman and the ACLU also find the language in the proposal to contradict the law unconstitutionally.

“The ACLU is supporting a lawsuit filed this week by plaintiffs that include Vic Fischer, a former Democratic legislator and delegate to the state constitutional convention. The suit argues that Lt. Gov. Craig Campbell shouldn’t have certified the measure and seeks to stop the sponsors from collecting signatures to get it on the ballot.” [ADN]

“To me, it looks like they are trying to return us to back-alley abortions,” Clover Simon, Alaska vice president of Planned Parenthood of the Great Northwest told the Alaska Star.

As Matthews and others point out, thus far the Catholic church as a whole has not gotten behind this sort of legislation, and hesitate when suggesting the idea of prosecuting women for undergoing the procedure. But fetal personhood proposals are popping up all over the country, in states as red as Montana, blue as California, and confused as Florida.

Be assured, we will see many in our religious community jump on board, especially in the wake of the troubles getting the needed signatures for the “Parental Consent” law petition trumpeted by the Alaska Family Council.

Jim Minnery, AFC

The Focus on the Family off-shoot, led locally by Jim Minnery, has been frantically attempting to meet the required number of people to sign their support which would force minors to notify their parents when they sought to terminate a pregnancy. This is the result of a similar billed which passed in 1997, but was struck down in 2007 when the Alaska Supreme Court found the law unconstitutional, citing their stance that sharing this information with parents violated the privacy of their teenage daughters. While a parental notification and consent law might sound beneficial, as a first impression, it loses merit when taking into account that Alaska ranks as the worst state in the union when it comes to rape, and in addition, according to Health and Human Services:

Since 1976, Alaska has ranked in the top five states in the nation for the highest rate of reported rape per capita. In 1993, Alaska ranked 1st in the nation: highest per capita incidence of rape.
Alaska has 6 times the national average of reported child sexual assault.
1 in 4 girls before the age of 12 and 1 in 6 boys before the age of 18 nationally will be sexually assaulted.
Fairbanks Health Center surveyed 419 clients over a 3-week period and found that 24% reported physical abuse in the past 6 months while 39% reported some form of sexual abuse (1995).
In 3 out of 4 reported cases, the victim knew the offender, the most commonly reported type of sexual abuse is a father who commits incest with his daughter–usually the eldest daughter.
As many as 4 out of 5 offenders were sexually assaulted as children.
One-third of incest victims’ mothers were sexually abused as children.
Alaska’s rape rate is 2.2 times the national average overall.

So, maybe being legally forcing kids to tell dad that they’re pregnant after he just lost his job and has been drinking all month isn’t the greatest idea.

Most Alaskans get this, even if they do not agree with abortion. But the Alaska Family Council is determined to curb choice at every turn. Minnery’s AFC newsletter:

“You’ll find more info on our website at www.alaskansforparentalrights.org but suffice it to say that we need roughly 40,000 signatures and to date – we are about 10,000 short of that mark. We have only a few precious weeks to get the remaining signatures and we are simply not going to reach our goal without more churches stepping forward.”

With the story about this new fetal personhood initiative, which would take care of the parental consent notification as well as the larger issue, the website advertised above is already offline. They can’t get the signatures one way, so they’re on to try their luck with a different extreme. I don’t think it’s too mavericky to assume that Wal*churches like Prevo’s Anchorage Baptist Temple will follow suit as the knowledge of this initiative begins to circulate.

As for Christopher Kurka, his fight goes on. In a bold display of creepy disconnect (that may ring all too familiar with many in Anchorage), he tells the Alaska Star: “This is what I enjoy. Some people have a favorite football or basketball team they cheer for. For me, this is my sports team, and I am a dedicated fan.”

Here at Baby we have long been proud of our work with the nation’s largest children’s charity – the National Children’s Home. Never heard of them? Well neither had many others, so we worked on rebranding them as the now much more familiar Action for Children.

In the process, we’ve changed everything from the name, to the logo, their position and internal and external communications including their first ever national TV campaign.

We think we’re justified in being proud of this, especially considering the results it is already beginning to show. Well, now CorpComms Magazine has signalled its agreement, by awarding the charity first prize in the “Best rebranding excercise” category of its 2009 Awards Ceremony.

Given the entry was up against the infamous Norwich Union/Aviva rebrand, through AMV and Hill & Knowlton, we’re doubly happy. You see, AMV are of course one of the bigger names in ad world, and Aviva one of the richer client. So this just goes to show that there’s more to a successful rebrand than throwing money about. Things like having the right ideas and, crucially, understanding your client; two things Baby has always held dear…

See below for a couple of stills from the ads, or come through to the main website to see the work more fully…

1) Colts (10-0) – LW 1

They haven’t played particularly well of late, but they keep finding ways to win.

2) Saints (10-0) – LW 2

The Saints high-octane offense might meet its match next week against the Patriots and Tom Brady.

3) Vikings (9-1) – LW 3

The old gunslinger isn’t playing like a 40-year-old.

4) Patriots (7-3) – LW 6

The Pats hope to crush the Saints quest for an undefeated season.

5) Chargers (7-3) – LW 8

The Chargers lead their division and are playing solid, complete football.

6) Cardinals (7-3) – LW 7

At 7-3 the Cardinals have a healthy 3 game lead in their division.

7) Bengals (7-3) – LW 4

Bad loss in Oakland last week, but they can get back on track as they face the Browns.

8) Cowboys (7-3) – LW 10

Ugly win against the Redskins last week, but they are still in first place in the NFC East.

9) Steelers (6-4) – LW 5

Bad loss at home against KC and Roethlisberger’s status is uncertain.

10) Eagles (6-4) – LW 11

They won a close game and kept pace in the tight NFC East.

11) Giants (6-4) – LW 16

They snapped their 4 game losing streak at home against Atlanta last week.

12) Packers (6-4) – LW 14

The defense has played better of late, but the Packer’s success lies in the hands of the offensive line.

13) Broncos (6-4) – LW 9

After a 6-0 start the Broncos have lost their last 4 games.

14) Jaguars (6-4) – LW 17

They’ll get a test next week on the road against the 49ers.

15) Ravens (5-5) – LW 12

A tough schedule and an inability to win close games has the preseason Super Bowl contenders at a mediocre 5-5.

16) Falcons (5-5) – LW 15

Another tough loss for the Falcons, this time to the Giants in overtime.

17) Dolphins (5-5) – LW 18

With Ronnie Brown out for the rest of the season, Ricky Williams has to step up and play like he did in his first 4 years in the NFL.

18) Texans (5-5) – LW 13

They have to learn how to close out games.

19) Titans (4-6) – LW 21

The combination of the reemergence of Vince Young and the MVP candidate Chris Johnson have the Titans on a 4 game winning streak.

20) Panthers (4-6) – LW 19

The ground game has been carrying them this season, but in order to win Delhomme has to show that he can stretch the defense.

21) 49ers (4-6) – LW 20

Alex Smith and Vernon Davis have shown great chemistry, but they have to start scoring sooner rather than later.

22) Jets (4-6) – LW 22

Too many turnovers have put the defense in a position to fail.

23) Bears (4-6) – LW 23

The Bears have lost 5 of their last 6 games and look to be spiraling downward.

24) Chiefs (3-7) – LW 27

They get better and better every week and they showed their progress with a win against Pittsburgh last week.

25) Seahawks (3-7) – LW 24

They get a great chance at win number 4 against the Rams next week.

26) Redskins (3-7) – LW 25

With Clinton Portis and Ladell Betts injured it’s hard to picture a late Redskins run at a playoff position.

27) Bills (3-7) – LW 26

They’re searching for a new head coach and Mike Shanahan is a very appealing option.

28) Raiders (3-7) – LW 29

Bruce Gradkowski got the Raiders a much-needed win against a very good Bengals team. Is this the end for JaMarcus Russel?

29) Lions (2-8) – LW 30

Matt Stafford exploited the porous Browns defense to the tune of 400+ passing yards and 5 tds including the game winner with no time left on the clock.

30) Bucs (1-9) – LW 28

First they fire the offensive coordinator 10 days after hiring him, now they fire the defensive coordinator 10 weeks into the season.

31) Rams (1-9) – LW 31

With Marc Bulger out at least 3 weeks, Kyle Boller will start for the Rams who will be searching for their next franchise qb.

32) Browns (1-9) – LW 32

A pass interference call in the end zone gave the Lions a chance to win and they capitalized on the Brown’s mistakes.

Alright last week’s Kibizters picks resulted in a tie. Both Gen and Greg had 10 picks correct and 6 incorrect. Andrew was the odd man out with only 9 correct picks but claims a moral victory by almost predicting the Dallas/Redskins game to a T, until SOMEONE HAD TO GO AND MISS TWO FIELD GOALS!!!! YOU ARE A PROFESSIONAL ATHLETE!!!! GOD!

Anyway hoi polloi, it’s time to bet the house because the Kibizters aren’t going to lead you astray.

Thursday Nov. 26, 12:30 PM:

Green Bay Packers AT Detroit Lions – The Packers just lost two superstars in cornerback Al Harris and linebacker Aaron Kampman to season-ending knee surgery. Not to give themselves too much of an advantage, quarterback Matthew Stafford and wide receiver Calvin Johnson are sitting out another practice due to their own ailments.

Andrew’s pick – Green Bay Packers. The Detroit Lions just made Brady Quinn look like a real quarterback, throwing for 304 yards and four touchdowns. Aaron Rodgers IS a real quarterback, so expect the same or better from him.

Greg’s Pick – Green Bay Packers. Stafford is out – enough said.

Gen’s Pick – Green Bay Packers. Even though the Detroit Lions are coming off of a win (oh boy), and a regular team could take that momentum and push for another, the Lions are without their rookie quarterback and well, they’re just not very good. Then again, Lions did win in 2003 over Green Bay (22-14). REPEAT?!

*Update: ESPN just announced that Stafford WILL be starting today.

Thursday Nov. 26, 4:15 PM:

Oakland Raiders AT Dallas Cowboys – The Cowboy’s prolific offense has only two touchdowns in the past two games while the Raiders mixed it up at GB last week and pulled a win out of their ass against the Bengals.

Andrew’s pick – Dallas Cowboys. Dallas should be able to thoroughly establish the run against the Raiders which will allow for some play action deep passes. People will start jabbering about Miles Austin again while Roy Williams (WR) fades further into the background.

Greg’s Pick – Dallas Cowboys. Possibly a trap game for Dallas, but after the last two weeks without an offense, the ‘boys show up big.

Gen’s Pick – hmm…uhh….Oakland Raiders. Oof. If Dallas puts on the same performance as last week and Oakland repeats what it did to the Eagles, then well – I’m right. But if these two teams decide to play the way they usually do, well then nevermind!

Thursday Nov. 26, 8:20 PM:

New York Giants AT Denver Broncos – Both teams know what it’s like to feel four losses in a row this season. The Giants have slowed the bleed with a win in over time last week whereas the Broncos have started to point fingers internally.

Andrew’s pick – New York Giants. Internal strife can make or break a coach and rookie coach Josh McDaniels seems like he stopped coaching after the bye week. Since then, Denver has been out-scored 117 to 37 and they’re facing another tough (although injured) defense with the Giants.

Greg’s Pick – New York Giants. I like seeing both of these two teams lose a lot, but will Denver ever be able to get out of this tailspin?

Gen’s Pick – Denver Broncos. I’m putting my trust in Denver’s explosive wide-receivers against the, sometimes, easily punk’d Giants’ secondary.

Sunday Nov. 29, 1:00 PM:

Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Atlanta Falcons – The Falcons are 12th in the league in terms of rushing yards. The Buccaneers are last in rushing defense but are looking to improve that stat by having head coach Raheem Morris call the defensive plays and changing back to Tampa Two defense (I wonder why they call it that……).

Andrew’s pick – Atlanta Falcons. The Falcons are healthy and piiisssssedd after losing in overtime. Josh Freeman will still give the Bucs something to cheer about, but again will come up short.

Greg’s Pick – Atlanta Falcons. Matt Ryan against a weak defense will lead to a rout.

Gen’s Pick – Atlanta Falcons. I think Atlanta will try harder to bounce back from a weak couple of weeks.

Miami Dolphins AT Buffalo Bills – The Dolphins blew up the Bills the first time around in week four. The Bills lead the AFC in interceptions with 17 but the only thing that matters in this game is stopping Miami’s fourth ranked running offense, and the Bills are 21st in the league.

Andrew’s pick – Miami Dolphins. I picked against Miami once before and got burned, plus I think the Bills have bigger things on their minds. If you have TO in fantasy football though I’d start him. He’s going to keep this game close by tearing through the Miami secondary.

Greg’s Pick – Buffalo Bills. The Dolphins make the trek up north, I still think the loss of Ronnie Brown will come back to hurt them – this is the week.

Gen’s Pick – Buffalo Bills. I think TO will continue his recent success on the field this Sunday.

Cleveland Browns AT Cincinnati Bengals – The Bengals overlooked the Raiders last week and got stabbed in the heart by one of those weird raiders nation guys. Brady Quinn started his 10th game in three years and had a career day with a passer rating of 133.1%, 304 yards, and four touchdowns. Maybe he had some help?

Andrew’s pick – Cincinnati Bengals. Last week was a fluke, let this ship right itself and move on.

Greg’s Pick – Cleveland Browns. Call me crazy, but I liked the way Quinn played last week (even if it was against the Lions). He’ll pull out a low scoring squeaker.

Gen’s Pick – Cincinnati Bengals. Quinn had a great game last week, yes, but that was against the Lions. I don’t think the Browns will be able to repeat their “success” against Cincinnati.

Seattle Seahawks AT St. Louis Rams – In week one the Seahawks blew the Rams out of the water 28 – 0. Both teams are chalk full of injuries but the Rams might have it the worst with Bulger being replaced by Kyle Boller after Bulger broke his leg.

Andrew’s pick – Seattle Seahawks. Even though Steven Jackson will run around like the predator, if this game gets close the Rams will need a QB and they just don’t have one right now.

Greg’s Pick – Seattle Seahawks. The Rams are just bad. There is such a disparity in this league of good and awful quarterbacks, the Seahawks have the latter.

Gen’s Pick – Seattle Seahawks. The Rams won’t do anything this game again despite the best efforts of Steven Jackson (or the Predator, as Andrew put him).

Carolina Panthers AT New York Jets – Both quarterbacks have trouble throwing the ball to their own team and each have lost three fumbles. Luckily, both teams can run the ball.

Andrew picks – New York Jets. The catch here is that the Panthers can’t stop the run and the Jets can, kind of.

Greg’s Pick – Carolina Panthers. Sanchez will once again throw interceptions, even though he only throws about 20-25 pass attempts per game.

Gen’s Pick – New York Jets. Inside sources have said that Rex Ryans has threatened to eat everyone’s children if the Jet’s don’t pull a win. Realistically, you can’t rely on just running the ball. Let’s hope Sanchez can go back to eating hotdogs during games.

Washington Redskins AT Philadelphia Eagles – The first half of the first game the Eagles embarrassed the Redskins on all fronts. The second half the Redskins showed some life before falling flat again. The only thing that has changed since then is that the Redskins have lost several key players.

Andrew picks – Philadelphia Eagles. The Redskins have had problems finishing games for the past two years and with Chris Cooley, Clinton Portis, Chris Samuels, Ledell Betts, Randy Thomas, and Chad Rhinehart out with injuries, the offense is full of holes. Even Colt Brennan is injured! When did that happen!?

Greg’s Pick – Philadelphia Eagles. Remember the first time these two met? Look for a repeat. If Andrew is even picking the Eagles, this cannot be good news for the Redskins.

Gen’s Pick – Philadelphia Eagles. There’s a fine line between supporting your team and looking like a fool. I have to be realistic here and predict that the Eagles will run all over the ’skins.

Indianapolis Colts AT Houston Texans – The Colts have gone 10-0 by being nearly perfect on offense and allowing the leagues lowest points per game on defense. The Texans would like to not miss the field goal that would tie the game this time around.

Andrew picks – Indianapolis Colts. I keep waiting for the Colts to over look a team and lose an easy win, but it won’t be this game.

Greg’s Pick – Houston Texans. This is the game Houston has been waiting for. They have everything in place and aren’t a cakewalk anymore. The Colts have been getting closer and closer to losing – this is the week it happens. Bye perfect season!

Gen’s Pick – Indianapolis Colts. They have great weapons on the field, but enough with these close games!

Sunday Nov. 29, 4:05 PM:

Kansas City Chiefs AT San Diego Chargers – San Diego took charge (get it) of the AFC West after beating down the Broncos. The Chiefs surprised everyone with a come-from-behind-reach-around-rinky-dink-….wait what? The Chiefs beat the Steelers in OT is what I’m driving at…

Andrew picks – San Diego Chargers. The Chargers do this every year it seems like. Start slow, win their division, and then burn out in the playoffs. Last time the Chiefs just rolled over and played dead and I don’t expect anything different this time around.

Greg’s Pick – San Diego Chargers. I really hate this team, there is literally no one on the team who is likable at all. But sadly they are the better team against the Chiefs.

Gen’s Pick – San Diego Chargers. I haven’t heard of anything the Chiefs have done this year that’ll make me think that they’ll have a chance against a team that has continually been to the playoffs.

Jacksonville Jaguars AT San Francisco 49ers – Jacksonville ranks 6th in the league in rushing yards and the 49ers rank 6th in the league in rushing yards allowed.

Andrew picks – San Francisco 49ers. The 49ers lackluster offense will match up well against the soft Jacksonville defense. I think this will be a good game for Alex Smith as he continues to try and prove that he was worth that number one pick for the 49ers. (He wasn’t).

Greg’s Pick – San Francisco 49ers. Singletary claims his team is good, well go out there and prove it! They won’t this week, they’ll barely get by a mediocre team in the Jaguars.

Gen’s Pick – Jacksonville Jaguars. Singletary won’t be able to rally his troops the way he did the end of last season. Let’s just hope the Jags don’t start slacking halfway through the game, the way they usually do.

Sunday Nov. 29, 4:15 PM:

Chicago Bears AT Minnesota Vikings – The Vikings 3rd ranked rush defense will put the ball primarily in Jay Cutler’s hands. Although considered to be, and certainly paid to be, the franchise quarterback, it seems that Jay Cutler is actually trying to challenge George Blanda for the single season interception record.

Andrew picks – Minnesota Vikings. The Vikings are probably one of the most complete teams in the NFL. Given all their options on offense, it would take a long series of mental mistakes for them to lose to the Bears.

Greg’s Pick – Minnesota Vikings. I almost want to pick the Bears thinking Cutler might have another 5 TD game. But the Vikings are just too good to pick against.

Gen’s Pick – Minnesota Vikings. Minnesota has too much going for them. They’ll take this game no problem.

Arizona Cardinals AT Tennessee Titans – The Superbowl that could have been. The Titan’s defense is 31st in the league at stopping the pass but Vince Young is looking like the pro bowl, rookie of the year, quarterback he once was by leading the Titans to four straight wins. Or maybe they just have the league’s best rushing attack….

Andrew picks – Arizona Cardinals. The Cardinals should be able to put enough points on the board to stay ahead of Chris Johnson. BTW he has 1,242 rushing yards right now, good lord son!

Greg’s Pick – Tennessee Titans. A few key turnovers by the Cardinals will be the story of this game.

Gen’s Pick – Arizona Cardinals. I just went on NFL.com and they’re reporting Kurt Warner has an “injured head”. I had to laugh at that. Not that I think concussions or head injuries are funny, I just like to think he has a headache. Either way, Warner is a better quarterback than Young. Should be a decent game to watch, but Arizona will win.

Sunday Nov. 29, 8:20 PM:

Pittsburgh Steelers AT Baltimore Ravens – Both teams need this win to keep their AFC playoff wildcard spot alive. Statically the Steelers are the better team but have lost games due to a myriad of injuries.

Andrew’s pick – Baltimore Ravens. Big Ben took a hard knee to the head this past Sunday in their second consecutive loss to the Chiefs in over time. The Steelers expect to play him on Sunday, but I don’t think that will help him throw the ball any faster.

Greg’s Pick – Baltimore Ravens. Big Ben is just a moron, throw the ball and stop scrambling as if you’re fast. He’ll get another concussion today and be out til playoffs. Ravens stomp out the Steelers.

Gen’s Pick – Baltimore Ravens. The Steelers lost to the Chiefs. The Chiefs. His injury last game probably helped Rothlishamburger remember the time when he crashed his motorcycle and felt like a meat patty on the road (too soon?). Expect to watch Ray Lewis remind Big Ben about his accident again this Sunday. Boom goes the dynamite.

*Update: ESPN just announced that Ben Roethlisberger WILL NOT be playing At the Ravens.

Monday Nov. 30, 8:30 PM:

New England Patriots AT New Orleans Saints – The Saints are 1st in the league for total offensive yards and points scored. The Patriots are 2nd in the league for total offensive yards and 3rd for points scored. Wow-wa-we-wah this is going to be a crazy game of football!

Andrew’s pick – New England Patriots. This game could go either way. To be honest, I’m just excited for it. I will gladly take a loss if the Saints win.

Greg’s Pick – New England Patriots. They are finally clicking; running on all cylinders; a seemingly unstoppable force (in the first half). While the Saints are an amazing team, I don’t see them stopping this offense. This is the Saints final test, the rest of their schedule is extremely easy (cough NFC sucks cough). Expect Belichick to pull out all the stops and play spoiler to New Orleans perfect season run.

Gen’s Pick – New Orleans Saints. Drew Brees and Tom Brady have similar QB stats, with Brady throwing about 300 more yards than Brees, but Brees throwing two more TD’s than Brady. Both teams are, undoubtedly, good teams. But I think the Saints’ drive to go perfect this season will help them win this game. Either way, this game will be good. I hope it’ll be as good as the Pats/Colts one.

Where do I begin with this game? A couple of weeks ago you could look at this game and say that Dallas (7-3, 1st NFC East) would run away with it, but after these last two weeks I am not sure about that.
Dallas is coming off of two games where they have put up a total of 14 points, 7 per game both scores coming extremely late in the game. Dallas got lucky verse the Redskins (3-7, 4th NFC East) whose old reliable Suisham did what he does best and missed big time field goals. For those who are not familiar with him that is the reason Dallas dumped him.
The Raiders (3-7, 4th AFC West) come into this game scoring 30 points their last two games with one victory over a very surprising 7-3 Bengals team that is currently in first in the AFC North. Two of the Raiders three wins have come against playoff caliber teams being the aforementioned Bengals and the Eagles (6-4, 2nd NFC East).
This is a big game for the Cowboys looking to cure their slump in play over the last couple of weeks, and what better way to show it then at home on Thanksgiving. With the season all but over for the Raiders, they are playing for pride. The Cowboys are playing for playoff hopes. Yes the Cowboys stand at first in the East, but they have a treacherous December yet to come and must pad as many wins as possible for getting there. In December historically the worst month for the Romo era Cowboys they are facing the brunt of their schedule; at Giants (6-4, 3rd NFC East), vs Chargers (7-3, 1st AFC West). at Saints (10-0, 1st NFL), at Redskins, and January at Eagles. Every team but the Redskins how took Dallas to the end pose a winning record. This is a must win for the Cowboys.
Tony Romo was shaken up on Sunday and with a short week it will be intresting how he comes out and preforms. I do not suspect Williams will continue to get the attention he has been getting these last couple of weeks. Notice a trend ball gets thrown to him now the offense is suffering? Could just be a coincidence.
The Cowboys will find a way to win this game, though they are facing a Graig Ellis (limited practice, knee) that would love to come home and embarrass them, after being let go this past off-season. The final Score Cowboys 17 Raiders 13.

I hate Brett Favre. With every fiber of my being I hate Brett Favre. I hate his God complex. I hate

I hate Brett Favre. With every fiber of my being I hate Brett Favre. I hate his God complex. I hate his Wrangler commercials. I hate that he sabotaged the summer sports news (again). I hate Brett Favre.

Which is why I believe the NFL should give him this year’s MVP award.

I know that doesn’t make any sense at all, but hear me out. Every time Brett Favre has retired (twice at this point) I have been ecstatic. The news filled me with such joy that I considered writing the world’s most sarcastic email to John Madden (although the odds that John Madden can check email aren’t great). But twice I have had this feeling thrown to the dirt when Captain Gray Bush decided he couldn’t leave the game for whatever teary-eyed reason. So it’s clear to me that Brett needs to go — and he needs to go right now.

This is why he needs to get the MVP award. We need to set up a scenario so that, at the end of the season, he feels he has achieved a note high enough to feel comfortable about retiring for good.

So give him the MVP. I don’t care if Peyton Manning and Drew Brees have far better numbers, just give it to Brett. It will make him feel special. He may even cry.

Come to think of it, the MVP may not be enough. We need to sweeten the deal. In that case, I would like to kindly ask the rest of the NFC to please let the Minnesota Vikings make it to the Superbowl this year. I know, I know. It’s a hard thing to give up and some of you may never have a shot at the title ever again, but it’s for the best. You have to understand this. As for the AFC, you all must fight it out to see who gets to let the Vikings win in February. You also have to let Brett Favre play one of the greatest Super Bowl performances in history. I’m thinking 30-32, 8 touchdowns (one on a 30 yard rush) and a 47-yard field goal. This will ensure that he is the MVP of this game as well.

That should do it. But in case it doesn’t, we have to make his season (hopefully his last) memorable. So let’s give him the defensive MVP as well. You know guys like Merril Hoge and Trent Dilfer would love to attempt to argue how he would legitimately deserve the award. Something along the lines of, “Well, think about it. He keeps the other team’s offense off the field for so long that he’s actually the best preventative defensive weapon they have.” Don’t worry, it’ll work. Darren Sharper might burn someone’s house down but these are the sacrifices that need to be made at this point in the story.

For insurance? Yes, you guessed it: The Heisman. Yeah, yeah, it’s completely against the rules of but we can make it happen. There’s no real standout Heisman candidate this year anyway, so let’s just give it to Brett because he was too busy pounding brewdogs to make it happen the first time around. This ought to do it.

Seriously, I see no other possibility here. Maybe if he has a career ending injury but that’s laughable. Brett Favre is incapable of getting hurt in any kind of serious way. He survived a car accident and countless Pro Bowl pass rushers slamming him into the frozen Lambeau ground. I think my way is our only hope.

Did you get all that, Roger? Good. Now get to work.

The Game. The World. Wir verstehen aller herbstlich-kulinarischen Genüsse zum Trotz nicht, wie Game und World so ganz universell in einem Slogan zusammenfinden können. World – die Welt.

World Cup (in Blatters visionär bilingualen Ausprache «World Coupe» genannt).

Let the games begin!

Until now, we’ve dissected the positions that aim to move the ball up the field, ultimately working

Until now, we’ve dissected the positions that aim to move the ball up the field, ultimately working toward a touchdown or field goal. What we’ll discuss today are the men in tight(pant)s who want to avoid this at all costs. This is known as the defensive unit. Don’t call it the d-unit though. That would make you a d-bag. I’ve been getting some questions about formations: are we going to cover various formations, plays, etc.? Let’s just say, in a world where I give out “Brownie Points”, identifying and analyzing formations would be “Triple Chocolate Cake Baked from Scratch Points”. I am happy to include an entry on this topic, but only if I get a sincere interest. Otherwise, I fear too many eyes would glaze over – even with the promise of chocolate cake.

As I was saying, let’s go through a quick rundown of these defensive positions:

Linebacker (LB): (See: Ray Lewis, Elvis Dumervil, DeMarcus Ware) These guys are basically all-purpose defenders. They can rush the passer (QB), cover receivers (typically the tight ends) and prevent the rush (RB or FB). Within the linebacking world, we’ve got two basic varieties: outside and middle/inside linebackers. To take things a step further, outside linebackers are divided into strongside and weakside LB’s. Weakside are charged with covering an open field and, as such, tend to be a bit quicker. Strongside LB’s are the ones lined up across (the line of scrimmage – are you absorbing these key terms?) from the tight end. More often than not, strongside linebackers are larger and, fancy this: stronger than their weakside counterparts. As the name may suggest, inside/middle linebackers stick toward the center of the fracas. Additionally, the MLB/ILB is in charge of making any necessary adjustments in formation based on what he reads from the offensive lineup. With this in mind, he’s sometimes referred to as the “defensive quarterback”. Cute, right?

One fancy football word you’ll want to remember is secondary. The defensive secondary unit consists of the following three positions:

Cornerback (CB): (See: Charles Woodson, Quentin Jammer, Asante Samuel) CB’s are responsible for covering any pass play. Various approaches include staying tight on a receiver to prevent any yards after completion, swatting passes to prevent completion, and picking the darn thing off themselves (“picking off” is synonymous with “intercepting”). Your ideal cornerback is going to be incredibly quick, able to keep pace with even the swiftest of wideouts.

Free Safety (FS): (See: Chris Crocker, Darren Sharper, Ed Reed) Free safeties thrive on covering deep passes. Though also charged with covering the rush when necessary, free safeties are spry fellas who keep up when opposing receivers run deep routes. This position is somewhat similar to the cornerback.

Strong Safety (SS): (See: Troy Polamalu, Bob Sanders, Adrian Wilson) Strong safeties tend to stick a bit closer to the line of scrimmage, primarily covering running plays and pressuring the quarterback. That being said, SS’s can be tasked with additional responsibilities depending how the play unfolds.

Below are the positions that encompass the defensive line:

Defensive End (DE): (See: Justin Tuck, Mario Williams, Jevon Kearse) As the name may suggest, these boys play on either end of the line. Their main goal is to prevent any movement on the outside of the field. The DE who moves more fluidly will typically line up on the quarterback’s blind side (right if he is a lefty and vice versa).

Defensive Tackle (DT): (See: Jonathan Babineaux, Pat Williams, Albert Haynesworth) DT’s like to see themselves as QB kryptonite. They strive to rush the passer, force fumbles and rack up the sacks. If we’re all on the same page here, I’m sure you can imagine that these fellas line up nose-to-nose with the offensive linemen.

Here to encourage all forms of legal and illegal gambling are the Kibitzers predictions for week 11:

Here to encourage all forms of legal and illegal gambling are the Kibitzers predictions for week 11:

Thursday Nov. 19, 8:20 p.m:

Miami Dolphins AT Carolina Panthers - Both teams have rushing offenses that rank in the top 5, but Miami’s rush defense is ranked 7th whereas the Panthers rush defense is ranked 25th.

Andrew’s pick - Carolina Panthers. Ronnie Brown might be out for the season and Jake Delhomme hasn’t turn the ball over in two whole games!

Greg’s pick – Carolina Panthers. In a close game, Delhomme will turn the ball over, but the 1-2 punch of Williams and Stewart is too much to keep up with.

Gen’s pick – Carolina Panthers. I also agree that it’ll be a close game. If they keep to short passes for Delhomme, so that he won’t get picked off (fingers crossed for three games without turnovers) and let Williams run like a madman, they can get this.

Sunday Nov. 22nd, 1:00 p.m:

Indianapolis Colts AT Baltimore Ravens – The Colts offense verse the Ravens defense. This game will be exciting.

Andrew’s pick - Baltimore Ravens. The Ravens are coming off a short week…but they shut out the Browns so it’s not like they’re going to be that tired. The Colts may be too exhausted from the Patriot’s game to continue narrowly escaping their first loss.

Greg’s pick – Indianapolis Colts. They might be tired and coming from a rough game with the Pats, but Manning will pick apart the corners.

Gen’s pick – Indianapolis Colts. What a game against the Pat, right? But I think because of such a close game, the Colts will step it up this game to keep their undefeated streak alive. The o-line just needs to keep Manning safe.

Washington Redskins AT Dallas Cowboys - Dallas has the 6th best passing offense but will be going up against Washington’s number 1 ranked pass defense.

Andrew’s pick - Washington Redskins. The Cowboys are the big favorites in this, but IF the Redskins can stop the Cowboy’s run game we just might be in for another Green Bay game.

Greg’s pick – Dallas Cowboys. They won’t lose to the Redskins at home, plus Portis is out again.

Gen’s pick – Washington Redskins. As long as the Redskins defense can stop Barber and Austin, and if Cambell decides to not suck this Sunday and they establish a running game with Betts, they can pull of a win against their rivals.

Atlanta Falcons AT New York Giants – Giants are coming off their bye week but have lost four of their last five. The Falcons are out a bruising Pro Bowl running back with Michael Turner sidelined with a high ankle sprain.

Andrew’s pick - New York Giants. The Giant’s overwhelming defense just might be too much for Atlanta’s sophomoric QB.

Greg’s pick – New York Giants. The struggling Giants play the struggling Falcons. A win could save both teams’ seasons.

Gen’s pick – New York Giants. Atlanta has been struggling recently and the Giants can exploit that.

New Orleans Saints AT Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Drew Brees is looking to take another chuck out of the 4,000 yard passing mark while the Buccaneers are looking for their second win.

Andrew’s pick - New Orleans Saints. Credit to Josh Freeman for trying to lift up the Bucs but the Saints won’t rehash the Rams nail-biter from last week.

Greg’s pick – New Orleans Saints. Was there any doubt in this pick?

Gen’s pick – TAMPA BAY! Just kidding, New Orleans Saints. C’MON!

San Fancisco 49ers AT Green Bay Packers – The Packers have a pretty solid team despite having a 5 and 4 record. The 49ers need this win if they want to keep their playoff hopes alive.

Andrew’s pick - Green Bay Packers. Enough whining about not having Brett Farve already! Aaron Rodgers is putting up solid numbers despite being slammed into the ground every play. This kid is definitely the future, if he doesn’t die first.

Greg’s pick – Green Bay Packers. This pick I could go either way in, but since it’s in Lambeau, I’ll pick the Packers.

Gen’s pick – Green Pay Packers. 49’s have a good defense but, well, the game’s in Lambeau…and it’s cold. Think about that.

Buffalo Bills AT Jacksonville Jaguars – The Bills fired Dick Jauron on Tuesday and named Perry Fewell, Jauron’s defensive coordinator, the interim head coach. While their defense has been playing average, I don’t think Fewell will be able to solve the Terrell Owens issues. But maybe someone can?

Andrew’s pick - Jacksonville Jaguars. Don’t throw near Jairus Byrd and give the ball to Maurice Jones-Drew and the Jaguars should have this one in the bag.

Greg’s pick – Jacksonville Jaguars. MJD will destroy the Bills lack of a run defense.

Gen’s pick – Jacksonville Jaguars. I got nothing for this and I don’t care about this game. But with a new head coach halfway through the season, things might not go so well.

Seattle Seahawks AT Minnesota Vikings – The Vikings rushing offense has slipped to 10th and Seattle’s rush defense is 11th. This one could turn into a wild west shoot out!

Andrew’s pick - Minnesota Vikings. Even though it’s almost that time of the season for Brett to start showing his age, I think he’ll be able to hold out while in the safety of the dome.

Greg’s pick – Minnesota Vikings. The Seahawks really don’t have anything going for me to have any confidence in them.

Gen’s pick – Minnesota Vikings. Favre and Peterson all day against the Seahawks.

Pittsburgh Steelers AT Kansas City Chiefs – The Steelers are statistically better in almost every way, but winning is contagious and the Chiefs won against their rival last week while the Steelers got swept against theirs.

Andrew’s pick - Pittsburgh Steelers. The Chiefs rank 31st in sacks and 27th against the run. This should allow big Ben the time he needs to chuck it downfield to Santonio Holmes.

Greg’s pick – Pittsburgh Steelers. This could come down to the wire, with Big Ben continuing his streak of turnovers, but the Steelers defense is too swarming for the Chiefs offense.

Gen’s pick – Pittsburgh Steelers. If Pittsburgh’s o-line can keep their composure, Rothlishamgurger can pump fake all he wants and eventually just throw it down the field for one of his receivers to make a play so he can get credit for it.

Cleveland Browns AT Detroit Lions – One of these teams will double their win record.

Andrew’s pick - Detroit Lions. The Redskins can’t be the only team to lose to the Lions over two seasons…right?

Greg’s pick – Cleveland Browns. This pick is pretty much closing your eyes and pointing, Quinn pulls out a squeaker.

Gen’s pick – Detroit Lions. This is like asking if you’d rather get shot in the right arm or the left arm. It sucks either way. But I’m going to pick the Lions simply because of what Andrew said.

Sunday Nov. 22nd, 4:05 p.m:

Arizona Cardinals AT St. Louis Rams - The Rams almost stopped the high-powered offense of the Saints in their tracks but Kurt Warner has thrown for seven touchdowns in the past two games.

Andrew’s pick - Arizona Cardinals. The Rams are averaging just 11.1 points per game, which is 30th in the NFL. Even when Kurt Warner throws five interceptions the Cardinals still put up 21 points.

Greg’s pick – Arizona Cardinals. The “two-face” Cardinals will show up with their offense and destroy the Rams.

Gen’s pick – Arizona Cardinals. Just make sure Fitzgerald’s open all the time.

Sunday Nov. 22nd, 4:15 p.m:

San Diego Chargers AT Denver Broncos – The Broncos would like to get the bitter taste of an embarrassing defeat out of their mouth and reclaim the top of the AFC west. Chargers are trying to keep a good thing going and win their fifth in a row.

Andrew’s pick - San Diego Chargers. If Chris Simms plays the Broncos are F-ed.

Greg’s pick – Denver Broncos. I still don’t believe in either of these teams, however with home field advantage and understanding this game will result in the AFC West title, Broncos will step it up and win.

Gen’s pick – San Diego Chargers. I think the Broncos will put up a fight but will eventually choke the way they did in Washington.

New York Jets AT New England Patriots – The Jets have won against the Patriots once this year but since then the Jets have fallen to mediocrity while the Patriots started doing what they always do – win.

Andrew’s pick - New England Patriots. The Jets should be shitting their pants right now. The Pats will be looking for blood after losing to the Colts.

Greg’s pick – New England Patriots. Exactly what Andrew said. Pats will cover the spread.

Gen’s pick – New York Jets. Call me an idiot or, better yet, an idiot, but I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that their first win wasn’t a fluke. I really shouldn’t drink so early in the morning…

Cincinnati Bengals AT Oakland Raiders – Cedric Benson is on the sidelines for the Bengals, thanks to Troy Polumalu, while Darren McFadden is returning to the Raiders. Just in case the running game was the reason behind the Bengals success in the AFC north they signed Larry Johnson who is pretty familiar with the Raiders.

Andrew’s pick – Cincinnati Bengals. I was pretty sure it was a fluke that the Bengals beat the Steelers, but twice? Either way, the Bengals shouldn’t have a problem with the Raiders.

Greg’s pick – Cincinnati Bengals. It appears that the Bengals are for real now. And the Raiders are the Raiders.

Gen’s pick – Cincinnati Bengals. Al Davis can summon the powers of Castle Grayskull all he wants, but that won’t stop Ochocinco and the Bengals from scoring.

Sunday Nov. 22nd, 8:20 p.m:

Philadelphia Eagles AT Chicago Bears – Both teams have struggled to stay competitive in divisions that they could have topped. The Bears have lost 4 of their last 5 and Jay Cutler can’t seem to stop throwing interceptions. Luckily for the Bear’s run defense, Brian Westbrook should be sitting on the sidelines for this week.

Andrew’s pick - Chicago Bears. The Eagles should win, but both teams have the tendency to perform either amazingly well or horribly. If both teams can’t get their offense going, this could turn into one sloppy game.

Greg’s pick – Philadelphia Eagles. Why is this game on Sunday night (sigh). McNabb will have a big game and carry the Eagles past the struggling Bears.

Gen’s pick – Philadelphia Eagles. Cutler’s inexperience and McNabb’s experience will show Sunday night.

Monday Nov. 23nd, 8:30 p.m:

Tennessee Titans AT Houstan Texans – Vince Young and Chris Johnson have revamped the Titans offense but the Texans are coming off their late bye-week and have had plenty of time to prepare.

Andrew’s pick – Houstan Texans. The Titans are slated to win by a margin of 4 1/2 points. During the Titan’s three game winning streak people seem to have forgotten that the Texans still have a decent quarterback (sixth-rated passer with five 300-yard games) and Andre Johnson. I say look for the Texans to ruin Vince Young’s parade.

Greg’s pick – Houston Texans. Stop Chris Johnson, you stop the Titans, Young can’t carry them.

Gen’s pick – Houston Texans. Remember last season when this match-up would be considered laughable? Yeah, not so much this year.
