Earlier today I gave a short presentation about my final project in Mechanical and Systems Engineering in front of an evaluation committee at Afeka ACE.

This presentation marks the completion of my academic obligations towards this project and thus concludes it. It’s titled “8 questions about rapid prototyping @ Afeka” and you can watch it here. You should, it looks really great! (if I may say so myself)

UPDATE (September 16, 2008): From Wikipedia: In the 1998 United States v. Microsoft case, Bill Gates gave deposition testimony that several journalists characterized as evasive. He argued with examiner David Boies over the contextual meaning of words like “compete”, “concerned”, and “we”. Gates later said that he had simply resisted attempts by Boies to mischaracterize his words and actions. As to his demeanor during the deposition, he said, “Did I fence with Boies? … I plead guilty. Whatever that penalty is should be levied against me: rudeness to Boies in the first degree.”

I was asked by the head of the mechanical engineering department at AFEKA ACE to present my final project in front of the Israel council for higher education evaluation committee. This is a part of a nationwide comparative evaluation process. The committee was assembled of engineering professors from Israel and the US. It went great!

Before my presentation I’ve attended a student meeting with the committee. Most of the students stated that they prefer to work in so called “High-Tech” companies rather than to practice classic mechanical engineering (because it pays better). Some students even claimed that they are putting effort into taking as much software related courses as possible. After realizing that this is the consensus trend, The American committee members were quite shocked and asked: “So who does the mechanical engineering in this country? Who builds the railroads? Who builds the power plants?”

To this I’ve suggested: the British?

I’ve just created a 26 page catalog of every Fab@Home Model1 part (except for the acrylic chassis parts, which are already adequately illustrated by CAD files).

The catalog is sorted by the official bill of materials line number, and includes Part Name, Part Number, Quantity Required, Unit Price, (some) Details and a photo of each component.

This catalog is intended to assist in the construction and maintenance of the Fab@Home model1. I want people to know which parts are more expansive (and be extra careful!).

I will publish this catalog on the Fab@Home Wiki, and make the photos publicly available in the near future (after commissioning the Afeka ACE Model1).
