Dear nostalgic of (or allergic to) the seventies,

After my last post which exuded hate and anger, I truly needed something shallow and funny. “You should be dancing” told me Cayden. Happily he didn’t try to sing like one of the Bee Gees. But he was totally right! Music and dance are the best way to forget everyday problems, have fun, meet people, burn calories and wear our best “party dresses”!

I listened to this Grandadbob song which always makes me dance in front of my mirror, then I decided to go back to the seventies.

Why the seventies? Because this era is (in Europe and in the USA) the symbol of amazing parties, freedom, and expression of identities. Of course this was an illusion, nothing was so simple and minorities were still fighting for their rights. But at least, in the music, in the spotlights, and on the dance floors, there was the possibility of being united for celebration, for dance, for bodies’ pleasure!

Don’t ask me why, when I think 70’s I hear Disco, when I hear Disco I see gold! Let’s go to the golden age of Disco then! I put on my old golden dress from Nylon Outfitters which is totally vintage now, and simply added a jacket and some accessories (like this antique headress from Chapeau très Mignon which brings a 20’s side to my 70’s ). Don’t say I was too lazy to elaborate a more complex outfit: I just needed to party as soon as possible!  Of course I ended my outfit with golden shoes but as I’m often unable to make choices I decided to take three different pairs of them and to alternate every three hours (or at each bottle of champagne)…

Cayden joined the party and created the perfect outfit to match mine. He even accepted to grant my request: as I remembered the “nigger” insult I had to tolerate (yes my last post again!) I decided to wear the best Afro haircut I could find in my inventory, and asked him to do the same. I’m not into racial classification. I never define a person with her/his skin colour, but for once it was quite funny to play with the cliché of the “Afro from the 70’s”. Dressed and combed this way, we could have been the heroes from a Blaxploitation movie. I’d have been the new Pam Grier, and he, the new Shaft!

It’s true we were not totally Abba’s Dancing Queens but I can say we were looking like real Disco Queens… Oups, I mean Disco Twins!

In honor of the racist bigots posting on several blogs, such as Sue, Black Lion, brygenon over on the Right Side of Life, who call anyone that has anything to say against “their” Obama a racist. I have decided to have a little fun and make the following illustration poking fun at their inabilty to see facts. Mind you that unlike them, I do not revert and call people racists. Sorry we’ve been MIA lately.  The DBFP girls have been doin’ big things-and rockin’ out to fellow badass bitches Those Dancing Days on repeat.  We finally nabbed the full album (“In Our Space Hero Suits”) from our uber-elitist music snob friend Ry Ry after multiple failed attempts to purchase it through Swedish iTunes, Spotify, etc.  Well, at least we TRIED.  If you’ve never heard of these chicks before you’re missing out.  For a group of 19 year olds (as seems to be the trend these days, ahem…) they rock out pretty hard-AND you can’t fail to mention the Zeppelin reference in their band name, insta-cred as far as we’re concerned.

So heißt die Webseite, oder vielmehr ist ihr Name People Of Public Transit, denn sie ist englischsprachig. Allerdings tut der Name nur ein wenig zur Sache, er beschreibt zwar genau, worum es geht, aber Namen sind Worte, und dieses Projekt besteht hauptsächlich aus Bildern. Bilder, die für sich sprechen. Natürlich sind diese Bilder nichts anderes als Voyeurismus.

Oder sind sie doch mehr als das? Etwa Zeugnisse unserer Kultur? Zeugnisse der Mode? Frisurgeschichte? Minirockgeschichte? Gesichtergeschichte? Schließlich Kunst? Ich, Zeitgenosse des ÖVM-Systems, sehe darin aber doch am ehesten den Voyeurismusfrondienst. Denn wenn ich die Bilder schaue und dabei in mich hinein horche, spüre ich nicht meinen Ästhetik- und Kunstverständniskitzler wackeln, ich verspüre eher Gelüste nach der Art, die Nelson Munz so schön auf den Punkt bringt: “Ha-Ha!”

When did you go natural and why?
I stopped relaxing my hair exactly two years ago. I had been growing tired of relaxing my hair for a while but I think majoring in Africana Studies in college helped me to appreciate the beauty of my hair in its natural state. I realized that by conforming to European standards of beauty (in terms of hair anyway) and accepting it as the only standard, I was denying [the value of] my own.

Did you transition or do a big chop (BC)? If you transitioned, what were your transition styles?
I transitioned by wearing cornrows, box braids, and occasionally roller sets. I have an “interestingly” shaped head so I didn’t think that a big chop would do me any justice! Every time I washed and conditioned my hair, I would cut off more and more hair until there was more natural hair than permed. I then chopped off the rest.

What were some of your challenges (if any) as a new natural?
I can’t say that I really had any challenges. However, I did have to get accustomed to the different maintenance ritual though. When my hair was relaxed, I would take just 30 seconds to wrap my hair and tie it up at night, and in the morning, it took a minute to comb it out, style and go. Now, I have to take a bit more time to braid or twist it up at night. It also takes me a few more minutes to brush through, pick out, and pad in my hair in the morning. It was a pain at first, but I found products and tools that help me to manage my hair well and it’s pretty much a breeze now.

What’s your signature style?
My Af ro of course! Occasionally, I wear cornrows or even box braids, but 80% of the time I wear my ‘fro. Sometimes, I wear a headband with my ‘fro, but I don‘t like anything tugging at my edges too much so I really limit headband usage. On the weekends, I may take out my twists and finger style for a different look. Since I am a new natural, I am still trying new styles, but I have already realized that natural hair is very versatile.

What hair products do you like?
I love Oyin Handmade. I use their Whipped Pudding as a moisturizer/conditioner and their Juices and Berries spritz as a leave in conditioner/detangler. I am also a fan of their all over wash because it cleanses my hair and scalp completely. I love that they are made with all natural ingredients and make my hair really manageable. A bonus is that they smell incredible! Another product that I use is Jane Carter Solution Hair Nourishing Cream for luster, and daily styling.

What do you love most about being natural?
I love showing people that it’s okay to be natural; you won’t be any less beautiful than you were with straight hair! I also love that I have already inspired two people to go natural!

While the dark shape of the business man is dramatic, my eye is drawn to the young guy, his I heart NY shopping bag, desert boots, and afro. Then I notice the candy cane and Santa in the shop window. November in New York.

WELCOME TO SO NAPPY! This is a new and fun blog dedicated to black women who are living (or want to live) a healthy natural lifestyle from their hair follicles to their toe cuticles.  I created this blog for women to have support as they transform (and struggle a little as I have) with growth and ultimate care of newly natural tresses. My significant other brought to my attention that some may think that I started this blog as a response to or as an emotional movement after watching Chris Rock’s “Good Hair“. I did not; however, I do not see anything wrong with taking a little inspiration from a wonderful documentary, especially about such a fascinating, and “close-to-home” topic.

About a year and a half ago, I decided that I would go natural. I did my research, read some books, and contemplated for a few months. I stopped getting my perm in early Nov 2008, and I transitioned with protective styles for 10 months.  Sept of 2009, I did the big chop.  No I did not cry Now I am doing what it takes to grow my hair strong and healthy. I have taken advice from YouTubers, Bloggers, and random shoppers in grocery stores. I have learned a lot about my hair by doing my own styles; I tried a non-natural hair dresser, and a natural/locs hair dresser. Both cost too much, so I forced myself to DIY! Anyway…enough with my story. I will write a page about that. This blog will allow me to give my advice to people that are going through the same struggles as I did.  On this blog you will receive useful product reviews, interesting book reviews, hot web links, sexy pictures, Hollywood-like videos, crazy polls, in-your-face surveys, and much more! I have become a ”hold-a friend-with-both-your-hands” kind of person (i.e cherish connections that I make with people),  so I would love to hear from you all about what you like, dislike, can’t live without, or can’t live with.  Or anything else you with to comment on. So please follow me on this So Nappy journey! The bumpier the ride the better!

The performances are great, the action is beautiful and it looks like as if it were made in the 1970’s. Yeah. Black Dynamite is righteous.

Acum, ca un bonus pentru rasisti si majoritatea coplesitoare a jegurilor celor care se prefac indiferente, sa va dau una din explicatiile pentru care lucrurile arata astazi, asa. Daca va amintiti, cumva, timp de 3 secole, noi, astia albi si imaculati, i-am folosit pe negrii pe post de sclavi. Pe plantatii, in mine si chiar ca servitori in casa, oamenii astia au trait in conditii greu de imaginat, batuti si tratati inuman, timp de cel putin 3 sute de ani. Nu vi se pare normal ca din cele 12 milioane de sclavi, rasa sa fi evoluat de asa natura incat numai cei indeajuns de puternici si inteligenti, sa supravietuiasca?! Da, xenofobii mei albi si infecti, e in mare parte si vina voastra. Pentru ca atunci cand voi stateati cu pula la soare, ei erau obligati sa lupte fizic si direct proportional, cu mintea, pentru unicul scop de a trai. Asa ca, incuiatilor, eat shit and die.

In alta ordine de idei, scopul articolului nu este de a denigra nicio alta rasa, ci de a evidentia egalitatea si pe alocuri, superioritatea, celor de culoare. Din acelasi motiv,de egalitate, am folosit termenul “negru” in defavoarea altora, care ar fi putut parea, un pic prea prietenoase pentru expunerea mea, semi-distanta (am mers pe principiul alb – negru, nu cel caucazian – de culoare).

Fiecare trebuie sa-si traga propriile concluzii, insa sfatul meu este sa va scoateti capul din cur si sa concepeti lumea din jur, asa cum este cu adevarat.
