Har Mar Superstar, Alex Greenwald, and Morgan Nagler of The Whispertown 2000 were in attendance. Why were these shows at the Echo free? They definitely should not have been free, in After The Show’s opinion.

After The Show: What’s your favorite lyric from the new album Eureka?

RS: “It’s the same old story, the same old movie, but when you’re with me it’s a masterpiece.” It’s from the song Only Friend.

After The Show: How did the band choose “I Don’t Wanna Lose You” as the first song to share with the world?

RS: It was the first song we recorded for the album and it’s the one we tried with a few different producers. It has our sound and has something new…represents the album in a good way.

After The Show: What is the hardest part about transitioning from a 5 piece to a 4 piece band?

RS: Well, we tried the 4 piece setup for a few rehearsals, but it didn’t feel right. I like playing guitar in Rooney and it’s been my thing for the last 8 years in the band. We have a bass player with us…names Brandon Quinn…awesome guy and terrific musician. It’s great to have a new energy in the mix.

After The Show: Matt [Rooney's former bassist] called Eureka the “best record we ever made” in his farewell note. Assuming you agree, what makes Eureka even better than your previous albums?

RS: It has the strongest songs and it sounds the best. It’s a good representation of who we are and what we’re made of. The playing is really good from everyone and it just feels the closest to home. We made it on our own, produced and engineered, which wasn’t the easiest thing for us, so it feels like a big accomplishment.

After The Show: How have the songwriting duties been shared among the band on previous albums, and how were they shared while writing Eureka?

RS: I’ve written everything for the band so far. Eureka has two songs that I didn’t write…Into The Blue, by Louie Stephens and The Hunch by Ned Brower and Taylor Locke. We started Rooney with my songs and it’s just been our thing…shaped our sound. The other guys are working more on writing and wanting to contribute, so this was their first chance to put music on a Rooney album.

After The Show: What is your song “Suckceed” about?

RS: It’s about some of the characters at our old label. Some of the things I witnessed or felt while working with them. How people pass the blame and how people do whatever it takes to make it…keep your job.

After The Show: What do you see as the role of collaboration in Rooney’s future? What about collaborating with other artists (Ben Lee, Jonas Brothers) in your own SoloBob music?

RS: I like collaborating and I’m loving the more and more I do it. Perhaps there will be some other artists featured on Solobob. As long as it makes sense for the music.

**Rooney’s new album Eureka comes out June 8, 2010. For tour dates, click here.

Right after the Korean Drama, Boys over Flowers ended, as expected by the viewers, the careers

Right after the Korean Drama, Boys over Flowers ended, as expected by the viewers, the careers of the artists in the show, didn’t end, for its the start only. Many commercial agencies are asking if they like to work as commercial models of some products. All of the characters of this drama, showed their talent and faces in commercial industry, while still portraying the characters they created in the top rating Korean drama BOYS OVER FLOWERS.

Let’s start with Lee Min Ho who portrayed the character Gu Jun Pyo, arrogant and son of the rich company group.

Lee Min Ho showed in commercial with his character in the show together with Koo Hye Sun and Kim Bum. He also did a commercial for Donuts.

In his commercial with Dunkin Donuts, It shows Lee Min Ho comfortable and sweet side. He also made it into modelling industry. And this time it shows Lee Min Ho different side with his smokey look and pony styled hair.

Kim Hyun Joong who plays the role of Ji hoo, did a commercial that show his silent and soft side just like what he’s portraying in the drama. This commercial is for a Chicken company, where he ride in a motorcycle and deliver chicken to different houses. He said that he is comfortable doing this because he had worked in a chicken company before.

He also did a commercial with Kim Bum and Kim joon for a cellphone company.

Kim bum who played the role of Yi Jeong which is the play boy of the group made a commercial with his partner in the drama, Ga Eul. He also made a cellphone commercial with Kim Joon and Kim Hyun Joong.

(COMMERCIAL WITH GA EUL)

Just like his role in the drama, he made a new commercial with other girl.

The last member of the group, Kim Joon who plays the role of Woo Bin had really bloom since the hot phenomenal Boys Over flowers. From being a rapper, actor to commercial model all of this Kim Joon had entered. And since Kim Joon is really really a handsome korean artist, he show off more of his handsomeness in his smokey eye look in one of his pictorial.

After the phenomenal, Boys over Flowers, the korean F4 really rock the commercial Industry, all of them can now be consider as “King of Commercials”

I am really looking forward to a lot more exciting and great show of all the characters in this show.

What?! I’ve never told you about being on Oprah?! Well, it all started when my friend Mim was asked

What?! I’ve never told you about being on Oprah?! Well, it all started when my friend Mim was asked to be on the show. I met Mim when we were both dopey college students — we were on the same study abroad program in Austria.

Now Mim is Dr. Miriam E. Nelson, author of the Strong Women series of books about the benefits of strength training.

Mim had never seen an Oprah Show before. Honest. Remember, Mim’s a scientist. A researcher. An academic. She’s usually working when the Oprah Winfrey Show airs. So she asked if I’d come to Harpo Studios to lend some support.

My sister Cheryl came along, too, and when we checked into our room at the Omni (“guests of the Oprah Winfrey Show stay at the Omni Hotel….”) there was a message waiting for us. It was Mim, explaining that she’d just finished watching tapes of old Oprah Shows in her hotel room. “It’s amazing!” she exclaimed. “She’s like a goddess to these women!”

Mim ended up calling Cheryl and me four or five more times that night. Now that she understood how the show worked, she wanted to plant me with things to say from the audience. I didn’t mind at all being an Oprah patsy. Mim knows me well. I’m a ham. Her new book back then emphasized the emotional benefits of strength training. “If you could get called on and say something about that, it’d be GREAT!”

I never got a chance. Not during the regular show, at least. Oprah’s people screen audience members far in advance. The chosen ones know who they are long before they arrive at Harpo Studios, and they are escorted to special seats in the front rows. Cheryl and I sat in the back. Turned out Mim didn’t need me anyway. After she was introduced, Dr. Miriam E. Nelson gently patted Oprah’s shoulder and said, “You have beautiful arms!” She had Oprah eating out of her hand. The new book sold millions.

Mim made the news again this week, complimenting the arms of another famous Chicagoan: Michelle Obama. A story in Thursday’s New York Times introduces Mim as Miriam Nelson, the director of the John Hancock Center for Physical Activity and Nutrition at Tufts University. It touts Mim as the vice chairwoman for the country’s new physical activity guidelines, written by the United States Department of Health and Human Services, and says she…

…has been thrilled to have Mrs. Obama and President Barack Obama as fitness role models.

Ms. Nelson said she and her colleagues celebrated Mrs. Obama’s official White House portrait, identifying the sleeveless look as a fitness trend that surpasses fashion.

“I can tell you, over and over again, whether it’s women 45, 65, or 85, when they do strength training and see the results, one of the first things they like to do is wear sleeveless shirts,” Dr. Nelson said. “They are proud of their body.”

Hmmm. I like to wear sleeveless shirts and dresses. Could that be just one more reason people think I look like Michelle Obama?!??!!

Enough of that fantasy. Back to my appearance on Oprah. Mim’s Oprah debut included one of those After the Show segments. From Oprah’s Web site:

After select tapings of The Oprah Winfrey Show, Oprah continues the topic with guests and the studio audience in a casual after show.

I was able to give my emotional strength training comment then. You know, After the Show. A year later, when Oprah was on vacation or something, the producers put together an hour-long Best of After the Show segment to air during her regular time slot. My bit after Mim’s show was featured.

Oprah introduces my bit by saying that sometimes her audience members tell the naked truth. The camera goes to me, I say I lost my sight when I was 26, that I lost my job then, too, and also lost a lot of self-esteem. I tell them a friend read Dr. Nelson’s book out loud (careful not to call her Mim and get busted as her friend!). I say I started lifting weights (it’s true) and that strength training had given me courage to go out and look for a job again (a bit of an exaggeration, but hey, it’s TV). And then I ask the big question. “Know what I do?” The audience waits at the edge of their seats. “We live in a university town, and I model nude for art students.” The audience howls. Mim is pictured, leaning over, hands just above her knees, laughing. Oprah is incredulous. “Is that really true?” she asks. “Is that a true story?”

It is. I don’t model anymore, though — I quit once Long Time, No See came out. We moved to Chicago then, and my writing career took over. But now that I think of it, I sure hope those students down in Champaign enjoyed drawing my arms.

In one of our merchandise topics, we had suggested that distributing songs in a digital format at shows could have some potential but the process was most likely hazardous since you would need a laptop handy and ask your fans to bring USB sticks. The idea is far-fetched but one company found the solution to spin it in the right direction.

Discrevolt is an online music store that offers a very cool distribution method for bands who want to level the field for their digital sales. They manufacture unique download cards that bands can sell at their shows, or simply give away for promotional purposes. This makes sense in the current state of affairs as CDs aren’t as viable these days. Digital music formats are making major head-way sales-wise but due to their intangible nature the product is not easily promotable in the offline world. These cards sort of make up for that as they are customizable. Bands can create and submit their own designs and have them printed. This encourages a new form of collectible items fans can relate to. When bands meet and greet with their fans after the show they could hand away these cards creating healthy post-gig buzz.

I find this to be a great solution bands should consider. Mp3s are rising very high but CDs are not dead and vinyls are still in the loop. People need to see and feel their product so cutting the cake in two gives you download cards. They very well may become the next big thing

The Ghost of Tom Joad was that incredible, the Big Monkey says. This version of the song with Bruce

The Ghost of Tom Joad was that incredible, the Big Monkey says. This version of the song with Bruce and Tom Morello singing and playing together, and their raw power, put this show (Magic Tour, April 7, 2008, Anaheim’s Honda Center) in his Top Ten Bruce Springsteen shows (he’s seen about 100).

See Bruce almost never has guests. Over the years he’s had a few guests like Eddie Vedder a couple of times, Neil Young, Jackson Browne, Bob Dylan. But it’s few and far between.

So it was quite a shock to have Bruce call out for Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine. Rage has been performing “The Ghost of Tom Joad” since right after it came out (see 1997 video below).

Tom and Bruce traded verses and did the third one together, then they went into that incredible guitar duet, he says. Tom went off and Bruce was standing there watching him, playing along, and then when the song was over, the tech guys who work for Bruce, they were just applauding like crazy.

You can get the feeling a little bit from the video, he says, of the rage, and of the feeling of being there. But it’s not the same.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJT1EdKRF2g (this is a pretty good amazing of it, just uploaded to youtube–Morello’s guitar gave me the chills so I hope you’ll check it out if you haven’t already! sorry but it doesn’t want to load from my Mac onto wordpress’s new do)

Tom was a really nice guy afterwards when he came out and shook our hands, he continues. He walked up the long ramp outside and started talking to us, about 10 of us. He thanked us for saying how fantastic he was, and signed a couple autographs.

But the Big Monkey is not an autograph guy, so he didn’t get Tom’s, just shook hands and talked a bit…he just wants Bruce to sign the mat of his picture, and he’ll die a happy man.

When Bruce came out, at first we didn’t even think it was him, he says. My friend Ron and I were talking and waiting and this big SUV came up and it was Bruce sitting in the front seat. There were none of those people with booklets of shit to sign like we saw last time at the Pantages Devils and Dust shows in LA , those people who hang out after with pictures waiting for celebs to sign them. No these were real fans, a couple of European guys. a gal who was in the front row in the pit, a young girl, a few more.

So he signed a few autographs, shook and few hands, said “I gotta go” and his driver drove him off.

I was talking to my friends, he says, hanging out like they have for years, waiting for the boss. I blew it, he says, I really blew it. I kicked myself in the ass all day today. I should have been paying more attention and been a little more aggressive.

He thinks it’s his last chance, but he’ll get another one. I mean, how many of his fans have met him, seen him after a show, had a picture taken with him?

Next time I’ll hang out with him. We’ll get that autograph, you’ll see, and we’ll post it on the blog.
