Don’t worry, it’s not in my best interests to become a Plebian and bribe people on a frequency as fast as the Rajdhani Express.

Today, I tried bribing the school security guard, just for the kicks, of course, because of the following reasons:

• Just 30 people were present because of the stupid bandh that Calcutta was apparently facing yet again and we were anyway not having any classes. On top of that, we were being retained within the confines of the small campus for no reason at all, and had absolutely ZILCH to do.
• I’ve been obedient all my life, I want to leave school after having done some mischief at least.
• And, because it just seemed like a fun idea.

So what I did was, slip a fifty rupee note in the guard’s hand and say “Bhaiya, please thoda gate khol dijiye na, bore ho rahe hain school mein.” And all he did was laugh and say, “Nahi nahi, yeh to nahi ho sakta.”To which I added,“Kyun, pachaas kam hai kya?”

I never thought I’d be playing along the hands of corruption Anyway, I was doing it for fun and was trying to see if he would listen. Which he didn’t. So then I was like, “Accha, theek hai. Aap bahar se ek Thums Up le aaiye.” And he just grinned a little more, and refused. So not bad, at least not everyone’s easily vulnerable to money.

Or maybe that was just too little an amount. In any case, I realised I was under surveillance cameras so I just walked away while putting the money back in my blazer pocket.

Just then the authoritative security guard female walks up to me and goes, “What’s your name, what were you trying to do?”

“Erm, I’m working on a project on corruption and trying to see how many of the staff members are actually immune to this social problem. Why, is there a problem?”

A friend stepped into my living room the other day and said, “Why do you have so many mirrors?” Well, it is weird that mirrors cost so much in a retail store because I find them for super cheap all the time. I usually need to cute-them- up a bit, but the result is always satisfactory so I grab them when I find them. Hence, my quick fix for this week:

I absolutely love Christmas. Nothing against Thanksgiving; I like it, too. BUT Christmas is my favorite!

I could decorate my house starting in October if it was *allowed* (the DPH is very specific about when we can decorate). I am allowed to put up Christmas decorations starting the Monday before Thanksgiving, but the tree doesn’t get put up until the day after Thanksgiving. It’s our compromise & it seems to be working so far!

So when do you put up your tree? Whenever you happen to get it or do you have a tradition that goes along with it? I’m all in the Christmas mood so share your stores!

MUMBAI (AFP) – India marks the first anniversary Thursday of last year’s militant attacks on Mumbai with a series of ceremonies to honour the 166 victims killed in the deadly rampage by 10 Islamist gunmen.

The day of remembrance comes as India’s government continued to push neighbouring Pakistan — where the gunmen are believed to have trained — to crack down on extremist groups.

Security forces, heavily criticised for their failure to prevent the attack, are to parade through the city with new hardware bought as part of a 1.3-billion-rupee (27-million-dollar) upgrade package.

Prayer ceremonies and candlelight vigils are also planned at a number of attack sites where the victims, including 25 foreigners, were killed in strikes that Indian media frequently liken to those on September 11, 2001 in New York.

Ten heavily-armed militants arrived in the city undetected by boat before storming a number of targets, including two luxury hotels, a popular tourist restaurant, Jewish centre and the main railway station.

The bloody siege over three days, which was beamed live across the world on television, shocked the country, sparked a public backlash against Pakistan and led to an ongoing international investigation.

Seven suspects were indicted in a Pakistani anti-terrorism court on Wednesday in connection with the attacks. All those in the dock pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Two men detained by the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in Chicago are also being probed by Indian authorities for their links to the atrocities blamed by India on a Pakistan-based militant group, Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT).

Two Pakistanis were also arrested last week in Italy on suspicion of having sent money to people implicated in the attacks and are being held in custody.

The only gunman captured by Indian security sources made a dramatic confession of his role in the killings during his ongoing trial in Mumbai, which could result in the death penalty.

The first anniversary comes after Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s visit to the United States this week in which he called for the world to pressure Pakistan to rein in extremists.

New Delhi accuses Islamabad of harbouring the LeT, which is suspected of training, equipping and funding the gunmen, with the support of elements from the Pakistani military and intelligence.

The attacks ended peace talks between the two nuclear-armed neighbours and rivals, with India vowing not to return to the table until all those responsible were brought to justice.

Singh called on the world to “use all its influence to curb the power of terrorist groups” in Pakistan, which has seen a rise in Taliban-linked violence in recent months.

Pakistan admitted under international pressure earlier this year that the gunmen left for Mumbai from the southern port city of Karachi.

Security has been improved in Mumbai in the last year after criticisms that the police lacked men, equipment and training to respond effectively.

Luxury hotels have introduced airport-style checks on bags and visitors, there is a visible, armed police presence at key locations, while private security firms have seen an upsurge in business for corporate clients.

Elite commandos are now stationed in Mumbai and the state police in Maharashtra, of which Mumbai is the capital, have set up their own rapid reaction units.

But experts say more needs to be done to prevent another attack, with coastal security a priority.

The acting head of Maharashtra Police, A.N. Roy, said India’s financial capital would remain a target for extremists because of its role driving India’s economy.

Last year’s strike caused damage estimated at 410 million rupees and hit overseas business and the tourism industry, from which it has yet to recover.

India’s Home Minister P. Chidambaram, who was to unveil a sculpture to the police and military personnel who died last year, has said the response to Mumbai has been “mixed” and warned that India is just as vulnerable to attack.

Hundreds of extra troops have been deployed in the southern Philippines after gunmen believed linked to a local politician kidnapped and killed at least 22 people, a military spokesman said Tuesday.

One battalion of about 500 infantrymen was sent to Maguindanao province on Mindanao island after Monday’s massacre, military spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Romeo Brawner told AFP.

Supporters of a prominent local politician in Maguindanao province and local journalists were among those murdered, with some of them beheaded and mutilated, the military and relatives said.

Brawner said the unit, which adds to about 3,000 troops already based in the area, was under orders to arrest the followers of local politician Andal Ampatuan, who is accused of being behind the abduction and subsequent murders.

“We maintain the Ampatuans are the suspects,” Brawner said.

He said the troops were also tasked with finding at least 20 other people who were abducted and remain missing.

“We believe more bodies are buried in the ground and we are trying to recover them,” Brawner said earlier in an interview with the ABS-CBN television network.

The murders occurred after gunmen linked to Maguindanao governor Ampatuan abducted members of a rival political clan and the local reporters who had been travelling in a convoy on Monday morning, according to Brawner.

The leader of the rival political clan that was attacked, Esmael Mangudadatu, had been meaning to nominate for the governorship of the mainly Muslim Maguindanao province for next year’s elections.

He was not in the group of about 40 people that was abducted, apparently after he had received warnings from Ampatuan’s people not to register in the polls.

But Mangudadatu’s wife was in the group and had been intending to lodge his nomination for him.

The Mangudadatu family is known to have a long-running feud with the Ampatuans, who police say are known to control their own private army.

Mangudadatu said his wife was among those killed and that many of the victims had been mutilated.

“Their private parts were showing, their heads were crushed, they were mutilated,” he told ABS-CBN, as he blamed the Ampatuan clan for the killings.

Before the bodies were recovered, Brawner confirmed gunmen linked to Ampatuan had abducted the group.

Although he would not say afterwards that the Ampatuan clan was responsible for the killings, he said it was a strong suspicion.

“Right now that’s the angle we’re looking at. The abduction of the Mangudadato family members by the elements of the Ampatuans is due to a political feud,” Brawner said.

Revenge killings and clashes among rival political clans are common in Maguindanao and other parts of the strife-torn southern Mindanao island, where unlicensed firearms proliferate and a Muslim insurgency has waged for decades.

The Philippines is also regarded as one of the most dangerous places in the world for journalists.

However, the scale of Monday’s slaughter sent immediate shock waves through the country.

“This is a gruesome massacre of civilians unequalled in recent history,” said Jess Dureza, President Gloria Arroyo’s adviser on Mindanao island.

“There must be a total stop to this senseless violence. I strongly recommend that a state of emergency be imposed in the area and everyone be disarmed. Anything less will not work.”

Arroyo’s office later released a statement saying no effort would be spared to bring justice to the victims. Related article: Philippine govt vows justice

“Civilised society has no place for this kind of violence,” the statement said.

Amid reports from media groups that as many as 12 of the victims may have been journalists, the National Press Club of the Philippines also expressed outrage.

“We are condemning this brutal incident. We have this culture of impunity in Mindanao that needs to change,” club president Benny Antiporda said.

Jaime Espina, a spokesman for the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP), called it “a direct challenge to our efforts to strengthen democracy in this country”.

Before the reports of the massacre, Brawner said the leader of the militiamen who staged the kidnapping was one of Ampatuan’s sons.

Esmael Mangudadatu’s brother, Khdadafeh, also said Ampatuan had warned Esmael not to register for the elections.

“His son, Andal Ampatuan Jnr, is supposed to run for governor and he had already made an earlier announcement that we would be killed if (Esmael) filed the candidacy for governor,” Khdadafeh told AFP.
