“Hur hanterar du ångesten?”

Jag har varit sjuk i anorexi sedan jag var 16 år. Ätstörningen har bytt form under den här tiden och min vikt har pendlat upp och ner. Har dock alltid riktigt nått över BMI på 19. Har heller aldrig haft bulimi eller kräkts.

Men det som jag har lärt mig under de här åren och särskilt när jag till slut fick nog i somras av att gå runt o tänka konstant på mat och träning är att försöka lära mig hantera ångesten betydligt bättre än vad jag lyckades att göra förr i tiden. Förrut kunde jag trycka i mig en påse godis bara för att göra något slags revolt mot ätstörningarna, “bara för att” liksom. För att visa att jag minsann vågade. Detta mådde jag tyvärr inte så bra av eftersom det ofta var ganska spontant och ogenomtänkt och ångesten fick mig att träna skiten ur mig dagen efter. Det var inte alls bra och inget jag rekommenderar. Återigen, du ska inte behöva träna för att få äta. Det är inte en hållbar livsstil som funkar i längden. Been there, done that.

Idag försöker jag alltid på förhand tänka ut och förbereda mig på ångesten. Istället för att jag rycks med i butiken att spontan-köper en muffin så planerar jag noga innan jag går till butiken vad jag ska köpa och om jag är tillräckligt stark idag för att kunna hantera anorexin o ångesten som jag vet alltid kommer.

Ungefär så här tänker jag:

“Idag e jag sugen på en chokladmuffins. Undra hur mycket ångest som jag kommer få efterråt? Vad är rimligt idag? Hur mår jag egentligen? Vad kan hjälpa mig för att inte tänka så mycket på det dåliga samvetet som kommer infinna sig? Vad kan jag göra för att ignorera eller minska den där elaka rösten?”

Vissa dagar är jag nämligen inte lika stark som andra och för mig är det viktigt att verkligen känna efter om jag är beredd att ta en fight eller om det kanske är bättre att låta bli just idag och istället försöka förbereda mig bättre mentalt inför anorexiarösten och därför flytta fram “muffindagen” till imorgon. Kanske låter svagt men genom att förbereda mig på det här viset kommer jag på olika “vapen” som jag kan använda. Så här kan mina vapen och strategier se ut:

• När ångesten kommer är det viktigt att jag befinner mig bland folk som jag tycker om. Kanske någon som jag kan kramas med, prata med, ha instressanta diskussioner med – ibland har jag märkt att det är lättare att hantera ångesten om jag äter t ex muffinsen med människor omkring mig än om jag skulle äta den i min ensamhet. Testa vad som funkar för dig!

• Bestäm dig för att helt ignorera rösten som kommer att slå på dig dagen efter. På förhand har du bestämt att du ska träffa eller umgås med någon, kanske köpa en tidning du länge velat ha, gå på kurs eller ett föredrag. Att bara ha tänkt igenom hur du kommer känna dagen efter kan hjälpa jättemycket om du bestämmer dig för att den här söndagen tänker jag styra mina tankar annorlunda. Den här gången bryr jag mig inte om lördagspizzan, skit samma!

Sammanfattningsvis, tänk igenom hur du vill reagera på ångesten. Du vet att den kommer, det gör den ju alltid! Även fast att jag själv fortfarande inbillar mig vissa dagar att den inte alls kommer att komma för att jag tror mig vara så himla stark. Men jag lovar – ångesten kommer ändå…

Så tänk igenom hur du vill att livet ska gå vidare efter den där chokladkakan, muffinsen eller vad det nu kan vara som alltid ger dig ångest. Inte vill du väl att hela dagen efter (eller hela veckan/månaden?!) ska präglas av vad du åt igår?

Välj och ÄG dina egna tankar. Du bestämmer själv din egen dag och vad du vill göra och hur du vill må.

Glöm aldrig det, i grund och botten så är det faktiskt du som bestämer!

With these stoves you can cook, keep warm, broil, bake, sear, and roast all at the same time on the same appliance without having to having to stager your meal so that something is cold before you can serve it.   Now that we have satisfied one of my major checks on the list, function, lets look at the aesthetics of this “live in chef”.  The slightly retro’d look is easy to incorporate in umpteen of different design feels.  Clean and modern, eclectic, minimalistic, country, retro, traditional….it can basically be morphed into what ever feel you are trying to incorporate, and if you cannot visualize it, give me a call….it’s what I do!   The lines are simple with a little bulk to them, giving the piece some great sturdiness and visual weight and the fact that it can come in a plethora of colors only makes it that much more radtastic.

The materials are basic and straightforward keeping the focus on what it should be….cooking awesome food.  They are however made with durable cast iron covered by three coats of vitreous enamel so they are there to rock for year and years, and durability in a product is uber important when talking sustainability as well as the fact that a well made product can make your home stand out among others.

All in all, it gets an A+. Simplicity, function, aesthetics, and history of amazing performance puts this at the top of my “wish for someday when I have a house” list.  Now just to work on the whole house thing…..

Der letzte Eintrag liegt nun schon einige Zeit zurück und dafür möchte ich mich an dieser Stelle in aller Form entschuldigen.

In einer Woche habe ich endlich Urlaub und werde mich vermehrt der Niederschrift meiner Erlebnisse widmen.
Denn das ganze hier ist neben Spaß, der Information anderer und dem Revuepassieren von Erlebnissen auch gut um alles richtig einordnen zu können und das Erlebte aus einem distanzierten Blickwinkel zu sehen.

Woche 1 war für mich die schlimmste von allen, auch wenn sie nur 4 Tage Dienst beinhaltete.
Es war eine komplette Umstellung, die mir wie 10 kräftige Schläge ins Gesicht vor kamen.
Woran das lag? An folgendem:
Verwöhnt, wie ich war, war ich ein großes, bequemes Bett gewöhnt. Beim Schlafen herrschte Ruhe. Ich musste mich mit niemandem arrangieren.
Tja und dann musste ich mir die Stube mit 7 anderen Menschen teilen. Einer davon war der wohl lauteste Schnarcher der Welt. Die Geräuschkulisse, die der Kamerad nach den 2 Nano-Sekunden, die er zum Einschlafen benötigte, fabrizierte glich in etwa der einer Großbaustelle in der Presslufthammerhauptbetrieb herrschte.
Das bedeutete, dass ich in Nacht 1 – trotz mehrmaligem Weckens des Störenfriedes – kein Auge zu bekam.

Da lag ich also in meinem viel zu kleinen, viel zu unbequemen Bett, das Kissen über den Kopf gepresst in der Hoffnung den Presslufthammerhauptbetrieb wenigstens zu einem Bahnhof mit regem Zugbetrieb umzuformen und mir so doch noch den dringend benötigten Schlaf herbei zu führen und dachte nach. Ich verfluchte in dieser Nacht meine Entscheidung den Kriegsdienst nicht zu verweigern. Ich dachte , dass ich 3 Monate mit dieser nächtlichen Unannehmlichkeit nicht überstehen würde und spätestens nach 2 Wochen den Verstand verlieren würde.
Als um 05:00 des 2. Tages ein lautes ” ERSTER ZUG AUFSTEHEN!!!!!” zu vernehmen war keimte in mir Schadenfreude. Im Gegensatz zu den anderen schreckte ich nicht aus dem Schlaf und fragte mich benommen wo ich war. Ich wusste es ja bereits und war froh, diese Nacht überstanden zu haben.

Der zweite Tag war im Prinzip eine Art Einführung. Wir hatten den ersten Stubenunterricht, in dem wir die Dienstgrade der Bundeswehr lernen sollten, wir wurden zum Arzt geführt, wo eine erneute Eingangsuntersuchung stattfand und hatten Abends einen Unterricht beim Zugführer, der uns einen groben Überblick über das gab, was uns so erwarten würde.

Zurück zu den Dienstgraden. Aus heutiger Sicht kann ich absolut nicht verstehen, wie es mir so schwer fallen konnte die auf die Reihe zu kriegen. Heute ist das alles Routine. Blick auf die Schulter, Dienstgrad erkennen, bei höherem Dienstgrad : Gruß “Guten Tag Herr [Dienstgrad]“; bei niedrigerem Dienstgrad : Gruß erhalten: Gruß erwiedern ; kein Gruß erhalten : Untergebenen wirksam an die Grußplicht erinnern.
Soweit die Faustformel.

Damals hab ich einfach gar nichts davon hinbekommen. Jäger, Gefreiter, Obergefreiter, Hauptgefreieter…. soweit ging’s noch. Und dann? Nur Murks. Besonders bei den Unteroffizieren. Unteroffizier, Oberunteroffizer, Hauptunteroffizier?! Schwachsinn! Und trotzdem sind mir solche Vergewaltigungen der Dienstgrade heraus gerutscht. Natürlich gab’s dafür jedes Mal eine Standpauke und einen hoch-roten Kopf meinerseits. Nach und nach hörte das allerdings auf und das Erkennen der Dienstgrade ging mir so ins Blut über, dass ich sie wie Ohrwürmer im Kopf hatte.

Es folgte am Dritten Tag die Einkleidung. Dafür ging es mit dem Bus in die Kaserne der Pioniere nach Minden. Als wir angekommen waren durften wir erst mal eine gute Stunde in der Sonne anstehen. Es waren noch andere Rekrutenkompanien vor uns an der Reihe. Dann, als wir endlich angekommen waren wurden wir durch verschiedene Räume geschleust, immer wieder mal vermessen und erhielten nach und nach unsere Ausrüstung, die wir in einer Art Einkaufswagen verstauten, der sich immer mehr füllte. Ich bekam alles, bis auf Stiefel. Die sollte ich auch die ersten 2 Wochen nicht haben. Das wohl größte Problem war die komplette Ausrüstung in 2 großen Taschen, genannt “Kampftragetasche” (Komisch, dass vor fast allem beim Bund ein “Kampf” geschoben wird. Beispiele: Kampfhandschuhe, Kampfrucksack, Kampfstiefel) und den “Seesack” und in eine kleine, dem Kampfrucksack unterzubringen.
Noch abenteuerlicher war es das alles vom Einkleidungsblock bis zum Bus zu kriegen. Ich fühlte mich wie der letzte Packesel und lief mit kleinen, langsamen, wankenden Schritten unter der Aufbringung meiner ganzen Kraft (die damals noch zu wünschen übrig lies) und Schweißausbrüchen zum Bus.

Zurück in der Heimatkaserne wurde wir in die DDR-Mehrzweckhalle (ich berichtete) geführt und mussten noch mal alles auspacken um eine Vollzähligkeit des Materials zu machen. Die Logik, die dahinter stand es erst in Bückeburg durchzuführen entzog sich mir allerdings. Mir fehlte natürlich prompt etwas. Die Stiefel ausgeschlossen. Was mir fehlte war ein Schlafsacküberzug im Wert von etwa 700€. Zahlen musste ich dafür nichts, es war ja klar, dass er mir einfach nicht ausgegeben wurde. Zumindest dachte ich es, bis ich meinen verloren Überzug zwei Wochen später in einem extra Fach fand. Ich hab bis heute noch 2 und viele Kameraden waren mir für die Leihgabe meines überschüssigen Materials schon dankbar! Tja, meine Schusseligkeit hat auch manchmal ihr gutes.

Der Rest des Tages und Tag 4 waren geprägt vom Einräumen des Spindes und weiteren Einweisungen in die Örtlichkeiten. Am Morgen des 4. Tages traten wir das erste mal in Uniform an. Mein schnarchender Stubenkamerad und ich waren die einzigen ohne Stiefel und sorgten dadurch natürlich für Gelächter. Und schon wieder stand ich – diesmal allerdings unverschuldet – im Mittelpunkt. Mist!!

Es folgte das Wochende. Das erste Mal zu Hause. Es war wie das Paradies. Das Sitzen auf der Couch war so himmlisch! Und oh! mein eigenes Bett. Die Herrlichkeit von Komfort wurde mir bewusst. Alles, was für den normalsterblichen alltäglich ist und nicht auffällt rückte plötzlich in den Vordergrund. Es ging mir körperlich so schlecht wie nie, aber ich fühlte mich pudelwohl. Ich glaube, so fühlt es sich an , wenn man darüber spricht nach Hause zu kommen.

Anybody who knows the Workhouse Marketing meeting room, will be aware that it has it’s own micro climate. Whether it’s sunny, foggy, rainy or snowy outside it is always freezing in our meeting room, (a 300 year old room I might add). Just come out of a meet with a new (frozen) client who pointed at the old wood burning stove in the corner…and said…”that’s an original Esse manufactured at Barnoldswick in Lancashire, they give out a superb heat and would make this room lovely and warm”. So, after occupying this building for nearly 10 years, the time has finally come to light a fire in our meeting room. Just need to add to somebody’s job description,” collect coal and logs and light fire in the morning”. We’d be able to present some really hot creative in our meeting room then!

…are worth a few quid, so if we get behind budget we might turn to the second-hand log burning stove market for help. As for a new project i have in mind, a text adventure with graphics like the magnetic scrolls series, I’m thinking about the image and color/palette formats the various amiga models use and handle.

The Amiga “Denise” chip is responsible for the graphical capabilities of the OCS/ECS amigas. That is the MOS 8362 “Denise” for OCS or MOS 8370 “Hires/ECS Denise” for ECS.

Amiga “Agnus” chip is responible for controlling the ChipRAM, DMA, resource management, video signals, copper and blitter.

Phew, I’m back. Did you miss me?

Been to see the folks in the country for a few days, what a glorious place it is to escape to. Chickens, Horses, an AGA, milk perpetually off and warm because Dad never remembers to put it away ;  ) , but Lovely to see my very excellent radio rentals with the added bonus of catching up with the Grumblies for Gran’s Birthday. I think she was very happy with her BodyShop Honey and Beeswax hand balm, hard to tell.

It is really important to get away once in a while, I received an email from our HR department last week telling me I had to take my last two weeks of holiday before the year was out, so the break was rather impromptu, but brilliant. I slept an awful lot, so clearly I needed it and rather pleasantly, I’ve just been complemented on the radiance of my complexion, that’s very encouraging when you’ve got a stinking headache and a cough and  you don’t feel at all illuminating!

Anyway, that’s the quick update. Here’s an ‘Awesome‘ blog I just found for your enjoyment, some definite truths in there.

1. ER. С ним Аптекман познакомился в Лас-Вегасе, на атракционе с машинкой трения. То есть, другими словами, Лас-Вегас – мировой научный центр, в котором был симпозиум с участием известного учёного – Аптекмана. После этого симпозиума бацилла лохотрона ринулась на наш рынок. Аптекман – переносчик заразы ER и Hi-Gear.
2. Hi-Gear, Step-Up, Doctor Wax. Для того, чтобы всё стало на свои места достаточно зайти на сайт www.hi-gear-usa.com в раздел дистрибьюторы. Там нет ни единого! американского продавца. Жаль, что нет прошлогодней копии сайта, там вся продукция была только с этикетками на русском языке.
3. LabTribo. Компания LT “Лаборатория Триботехнологии” – аналогичное детище Аптекмана. Телефон и адрес появились только в апреле 2002 года, благодаря нашим усилиям, но, кроме AGA нет ни одного продавца их продукции. Фирма LT (Лаборатория Триботехнологии) – создана для обмана покупателей с целью избежать негативных для AGA последствий от продажи FENOM.

Nantwich shopworkers are taking part in a national cookery day fund-raiser in aid of children’s charity The Place2Be.

Staff at the AGA store, on Hospital Street, will be creating quick -fix dishes as part of the challenge between 11am and 3pm on Saturday November 28.

The day will focus on ‘quick fix delights’ – dishes that can be created at the last minute. Visitors will get to taste the food, and there will be a raffle.

The Place2Be works inside schools to improve emotional well-being of children, families and the whole school communities.

Convocam-se todos os estudantes para a Assembleia Geral de Alunos extraordinária que se realizará no dia 12 de Novembro pelas 14:30 horas, na Aula Magna da Faculdade de Belas Artes.

Dadas as irregularidades ocorridas no início deste ano, nomeadamente as sobreposições de horários, o regime incompleto de precedências, as bolsas de estudo em atraso, entre outras, a intenção deste encontro é perceber quais os problemas que se mantém.

Pretendemos ajudar os órgãos competentes a resolvê-los, através da sua identificação e de que maneira afectam o percurso académico da comunidade estudantil.

At Tredarrup we do our best to always consider the environment and our impact on the planet…and one of the things we do is try to keep our waste (and hopefully our cottage guests’) to a minimum.  And a great addition that we have aside from recycling, composters, dogs, cats are our chickens……..

 Allowed to roam free and source a lot of their own diet which is mixed with organic corn, layer pellets and some nice tasty scraps and over the course of this summer we have discovered one of the things they go mad for are leftover chocolate chip brioche – no doesn’t mean the eggs taste of chocolate!  So currently in the chicken scraps tub are – cornflakes, brown rice, roast potatoes, green beans, an assortment of bread and chocolate chip brioche…mostly organic but not all.  But one thing they don’t often get is cake as there is very rarely any left.  We make all our visitors a chocolate cake for their arrival which has been written about often in our visitors book and recently we considered how many cakes I had made just for the cottage visitors alone and we reckoned well in excess of 500 so you add that to those we make for ourselves and the fact that our AGA has been in the farm house for over 60 years and probably would have baked cakes/biscuits every other day – so think on the maths ?!   So this week whilst doing changeover is was absolute heaven that when I went into Stable Cottage guests had made and left us a cake !!  Delicious carrot cake from one of the cookery books in the cottage – Abel & Cole - it was a treat with a good cup of coffee and what is left I’m about to finish off – so thank you Suzanne and Dan, look forward to seeing you again.

I’ve been working on biscotti over the past week or two with reasonably pleasing results and no doubt something will be appearing here once I’ve come up with a recipe I really like. In the meantime I thought I’d pop my recipe for highland shortbread on the blog as it was reading about biscotti a couple of years ago that helped me to crack cooking shortbread in the aga.

Shortbread is something I make a lot of – it is really, really easy and always very popular. If you go to see Rod Stewart you’d want him to sing Maggie May wouldn’t you..? Well most people want my shortbread as it’s probably my biggest hit!

As you will no doubt be aware, the aga is great for not drying things out when cooking but this can be a bit of a problem if you want crisp biscuits. I found when I first started to cook shortbread – and most other biscuits in the aga that whilst it browned them beautifully the crispness I was used to from the electric oven in my previous house eluded me. Then I read that the Italian word biscotti translates literally as “twice baked” and this inspired me to try something a little different.

By baking the biscuits firstly in the baking oven but for a slightly shorter time then transferring them to the simmering oven for a long slow drying period I achieved a wonderfully light crisp shortbread which has fans wherever it goes. I suspect it would keep well too but it never lasts long enough for me to find out!

Ingredients

8 oz Butter
3.5 oz Caster Sugar
8 oz Plain Flour
4 oz Ground Rice
Demerara Sugar
Method
Cream butter and caster sugar until fluffy
Add flour and ground rice – mix well
Split biscuit dough into two halves
Roll into sausage shape then roll in the demerara sugar
Divide each sauage of biscuit dough into 16 slices
Place shortbread rounds onto two baking trays

Aga: Baking oven shelf 1 for 12 minutes (9 minutes and turn through 180 for a further three) then simmering oven for 45 minutes to crisp

I have found it best to bake the trays one at time in the baking oven but the crisping I do by putting the first tray on the floor of the simmering oven then the second on a gridshelf half way up, the overall time for the tray on the floor being 1 hour, the tray half way up being 45 minutes.

Gas 5 / 375 F / 190 C for approx 15 minutes

It is 300 years since Abraham Darby first melted iron using coke at the AGA headquarters in Coalbrookedale, sparking the Industrial Revolution and changing the country kitchen forever. This weekend marks the final few days of a month long celebration of this anniversary, which has seen events and activities held at AGA shops across the country.

Perceived as an icon of the middle classes, the AGA has been the object of much sneering. In 1992, the term ‘aga saga’ was coined by Terence Blacker in Publishing News to describe the works of English writer, Joanna Trollope. It was meant to denote a type of novel, set in middle England and populated by the middle class sort that typically own AGA cookers. It was not taken as a compliment. In January 2005, Trollope was quoted in The Telegraph as saying: “I just cannot believe that anyone is still using that term. I used to be vehemently fed up with but now I’m just tired. It’s patronising and it’s inaccurate.” Oops.

The ‘aga saga’ novel might conjure up pictures of homely farmhouse kitchens and Labrador dogs, but earlier this year a less bucolic sort of ‘aga saga’ was played out in The Guardian between journalist and environmental activist, George Monbiot and the chief executive of the AGA Rangemaster Group, William McGrath. Monbiot started the tussle by declaring war on the AGA, raging about its middle class owners, whom, he said, clearly couldn’t give a monkey’s about climate change. McGrath replied saying that his views on class were outdated and that a home with an Aga cooker could use less energy than one without. They continued their fight in a fully transcribed interview on The Guardian website.

Monbiot clearly feels very strongly about Agas, and their owners. So one can only imagine his reaction on learning that, to celebrate AGA’s 300 year history, another symbol of middle class prosperity, Emma Bridgewater, has decorated one of these controversial cookers with her famous polka dots.
