I honestly feel bad for people who slept on Sean Price/Ruck’s Monkey Barz, the album dropped kind of unexpectedly about four years ago now in 2005. Before that the most recent thing he released was the Boot Camp Click album (The Chosen Few) in 02 and a couple sporadic joints with Agallah. Lately Sean Price has been busy working with Guilty Simpson and Black Milk for a collaborative album, as well as releasing D.I.R.T. with longtime partner Rock last year. For Onion Head Sean P gets production from Khrysis of the Justus League and Tek from Smiff N Wessun on the chorus.

If you’re up on your East Coast hip hop, like your music really lyrical with a hard edge, and you do

If you’re up on your East Coast hip hop, like your music really lyrical with a hard edge, and you don’t know about St. Laz, then you’ve been missing a treat. We catch up with the man himself to speak about his feelings on UK artists, how he writes his lyrics and how he’s all over the internet!

St. Laz

St. Laz, how was it coming up on the hip hop scene in such a hard area like Brooklyn?

Really it’s hard in New York in general, but Brooklyn has the hungriest, most relentless artists on the come up so it’s a lot of competition, but it’s healthy, I love it.

St. Laz

Is there added expectations put on your shoulder coming from an area that has produced such massive rap talent?

Definitely, if you are gonna rep Brooklyn you’ve gotta rep hard. Brooklyn is very judgmental, you can’t be soft or wack, you gotta average a “triple double” every night.

St. Laz

You’ve got a very poetic command of the lyrics, what’s your process of writing?

I usually drive and write at the same time, jotting my bars down when traffic slows or at the red lights ha ha! I like to be outside when I write, I need to see the world and let thoughts flow from the stuff I’m seeing but I can write anywhere at any time. I usually can write 16 bars in 20 minutes or less. I try not to be “over lyrical” nor too simplistic. I also like the beat blasting and influencing everything that comes to my mind.

St. Laz

A lot of these new MCs do everything by computer, but do you still write on pen and paper, or on the PC? Do you think this new emphasis and obsession hip hop has with the internet and technology is a blessing or a curse?

I write in my iPhone mostly but i have no problem using old fashioned pen and paper. I can write in my head too but now everybody claims to do that so its corny. Technology is great for hip-hop, 10 years ago it wasn’t so easy for me to collab with a dude in France or Norway. Now a collab is an email away, i can service radio stations, video shows, mixtape DJs etc right from my laptop, so it’s definately a blessing. The downside is technology also made a million more wack dudes wanna be rappers because they think they can do everything from the their computers. My grind and hustle goes way beyond the computer.

St. Laz

What’s your freestyle game like, and how do you practice the art of making bars up on the spot?

I don’t really freestyle, it’s more a poetry thing to me. I love to write, i love to actually see my words written down. I admire dudes who can just come off the top of the dome though, dudes like Agallah can just grab the mic and awe the crowd with straight off the head bars, it’s crazy! St. Laz needs to write though.

You’ve hooked up with massive acts like 50 Cent, and some real hood underground acts like Geolani. How do you get in touch?

The songs I had with 50 Cent were songs that leaked out of his studio and basically nobody had them but a couple of DJs who passed them to me. I put myself on the songs and got the songs out there even before dudes like Whoo Kid heard them, so the only versions of the songs that were out were the versions with my verses on them. Whoo Kid played the songs on major radio stations and 50 even spoke about me doing this on the radio one time. He had to respect my hustle because he would have, and has done, the same thing on the underground. When you’re tryna come up “all is fair” my gee. I knew Geolani from when he used to manage liveson, we go back like cherry flavored jingles and banana now & laters.

Late & Tricksta have dropped your mixtape ‘The Don Of Pottersfield’ some months back. What made you want to work with those UK heavyweights?

Late & Tricksta! I have known them for years, they are good dudes who have a good ear for real talent and real hip-hop, i fucks with them. They are smart business men. I like to connect with whoever is serious about this music.

Do you ever check out any of the up and coming British MCs? Any plans for an international collaboration or two?

I’ve done songs with a lot of dudes from the UK, in fact i have two videos with a very talented artist named “Cerose” from Brixton. He’s the illest UK artist I’ve heard thus far, you can see the video here: http://vimeo.com/2190070 it also features Agallah. The video is sick!

St. Laz-Coast 2 Coast Exclusive Series Vol.8

Where can we check you out online then?

The question should be where can you “not” check me online, that would be easier to answer ha ha. I’m all over the internet, allhiphop.com hiphopgame.com, hiphopdx.com, thatcrack.com, forbezdvd.com, rapmullet.com and a million others, you can always download my newest music on hearitfirst.net, sermonsdomain.com and all the top blogs.

Have you got any shout outs or things you want to say to our readers before we finish the interview off?

Shout out to New Industry the movement, Ophax, Pimp, Lexus, DJ Fade, Gutta Muzic, M.reck, Doggie Diamonds, the whole of Pottersfield and my dude Sha who just came home from doing 16 years in jail, welcome home homie. Life begins here.
